No candy either. And I've stopped putting sugar in my coffee. I actually feel a lot more relaxed and healthy and focused all the time.

I hated soda then, I continue to hate it now.
When I was a little kid my tastes were entirely turned around from what the other kids liked. I hated all soda, candy, junk food, and sweets in general and more or less still do now. I was always a problem at school events where food was being served because things were tasteless and bland. By high school I was taking my own garlic and pepper to the school dining hall.

I still don't get the soda-for-caffeine camp. When cramming for a test or writing a paper, I could easily down two pots of coffee, but there's no way I could drink that much pop* in one sitting.
Soda = caffeine + assload of sugarCoffee = caffeine, pure and unadulterated
You don't get the Big Sugar Comedown after drinking a lot of coffee.
Anthony, I have totally peed in some empty pop bottles in my day. Not in my dorm room though.

I can't drink softdrinks at all - they only make me more thirsty, I have a really really restricted sweet tooth - I think it happened when I had braces on my teeth at 15 and wasnt allowed any sweets or soft drink for 18 months. Lost the taste for sugar completely (I'm not even a fan of fruit). About the only thing i'll indulge in a few times a week is vitamin water, but only the one with guarana in it, and even then I water it down a bit.
Diet soft drinks are even worse. Fake sugar is some straight up foul shit.

i get mad headaches when i dont drink a coke by noon. i hate coffee - the taste and smell - so what am i going to do? drink water?
also here is what my dentist told me about soda and teeth: drinking soda is fine as long as you do it quickly. like drink one with lunch maybe. sipping is what destroys your teeth because it takes 20 mins to neutralize the acid in your mouth and if your sipping it never happens. this also applies to juices which are just as damaging.
― RADNESS UNLIMITED! (sunny successor), Monday, 8 December 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)
Sodas: unless as a mixer, or if I am having mad expat root beer float craving, never ever. Diet soda tastes foul and like all 'lo-cal' is a completely false economy. People need to realise you should only drink tiny glasses full of juice because after about 6oz you're looking at a fructose rush that makes it harder for the body to break down the sugars that already exist in everything else you're eating.

I can hold my coffee better than water. It's like two minutes after I drink a pint of water, I have to use the bathroom, like clockwork.
I don't drink a lot of soda (or "Coke", as we call it here.) I go through a two-liter of Sprite in about ten days, mixing it with boysenberry juice. But I do drink beer and coffee, so I'm not going to strut my stuff on this thread or anything.
I have to drink Coca-Cola when eating pizza. Pizza crust and coke is great.

I used to drink a couple of cokes a day (although always with food) but since the new year I've cut back to a couple a week (I just can't enjoy pizza without a soda, and I can't enjoy life without enjoying pizza) and it hasn't been too difficult. My roommate and I banned them in the house, using HEB lemon or lime-flavored fizzy water as a substitute. As a result, we go through about 50 cans a week. It's not the sugar and caffeine I can't do without, it's the effervescence!
― f. hazel, Saturday, 7 March 2009 21:07 (seventeen years ago)
^^ That's me exactly. I drink a lot of diet coke but have cut back recently but can't live without my selzer. The bubbles just make water so much better. If someone told me I could never drink any sort of fizzy drink at all I'd be so sad. It just seems more refreshing to me.
― Too Into Dancing to Argue (ENBB), Saturday, 7 March 2009 21:24 (seventeen years ago)
I cut out sugary pop entirely for Boylan's lemon seltzer. Since we moved, I can't find it! Grr!
f.hazel, I'm totally with you re: cola and pizza. I just gotta have it with certain food items.
― kate78, Saturday, 7 March 2009 21:27 (seventeen years ago)
I have been on a no-soda policy for years, and didn't crave soda in the slightest until all of a sudden recently I got a weird craving for them and started having a few here and there. Odd. They're really bad for your teeth, I understand, even the diet ones.

Green tea with mango for me, poured into plastic bottles and refrigerated until delightfully cold.
― kenan, Friday, 13 March 2009 00:58 (seventeen years ago)
Apparently green tea lowers bad cholesterol, fights cancer, strengthens and whitens your teeth, boosts your immune system, manages your weight, gives you more powerful erections, balances your checkbook, makes sure you're wearing clean underwear, spays and neuters your pets, turns the light out in the bathroom, fights corporate greed, and makes kittens cuter.
― kenan, Friday, 13 March 2009 01:14 (seventeen years ago)
i'd love to give up soda completely but i just really really love the taste of coke classic. even if it's only once a week or so, i can't quite give it up.
i wish they'd develop a carbonated iced tea because i'd probably wind up drinking nothing else.

I think half my calorie consumption comes from Cola. (NB my meals lately consist of like whatever I can put in my mouth quickly with no prep, ie my average meal is something like two tangerines + a handful of almonds + sliced cheese.)
― fillibustar superstar! (Abbott), Wednesday, 29 April 2009 19:18 (seventeen years ago)
I don't really care for soda at all. I drink it if it's available at some party, and maybe occasionally at a restaurant/bar, but that's about it. It must be years since I last bought soda to drink at home.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 29 April 2009 19:20 (seventeen years ago)
If I am in a dour place Coca-Cola classic cheers me up faster than anything. Alcohol can exacerbate a bad mood and naturally marijuana is the height of all folly for me to approach when depressioed, BUT cola is a big, friendly hug. I think it is the sugar + carbonation + taste + caffiene + some placebo/classical conditioning thing.
(I also like vanilla Coke for the sads.)
― fillibustar superstar! (Abbott), Wednesday, 29 April 2009 19:21 (seventeen years ago)
However, I kinda think I trink too much orange juice, so I've been trying to cut that down. Even though it's non-sugared, 100% whole juice, there's still sugar in it and I do think the acids in it must be bad for my teeth too.

I used to drink massive amounts of soda. At the peak of my consumption, I would drink at least one 64oz Dr Pepper from the corner 7-11 a day. I started getting crazy stomach aches and thought I was getting an ulcer from stress. I didn't have any medical insurance, so I just dealt with it for 2 years or so. Eventually I stopped drinking beer, and then later soda, and it went away and hasn't been back since. I still drink the occasional small 7-up or Coke with certain types of food, but for the most part the stuff just seems too sweet for me now. I drink a lot of water and Honest Tea, and sometimes Paul Newman lemonade when I feel like something sweet. At one time, I never thought I'd be able to quit drinking soda, but now I don't miss it at all.

Yeah, it's about sugar consumption, really. I stay away from sugar in general, and therefore, sodas really seem too sweet. If I'm gonna have sugar every once awhile, I prefer a piece of chocolate or maybe baklava or some nice dessert than to waste it all in what amounts to sugary water. Sugar is kindof like cigarettes, imo - once you've stayed away from it long enough to beat the addiction, it doesn't seem nearly as appealing as it once did.
