In more general terms, I the middle section of the Premiership last season was pretty close, some of those teams have strengthened over the summer - Middlesbrough in particular have been a solid team with a dire strike force, they are totally reliant on Viduka and Hasselbaink producing the goods but we could be in a Cole/Yorke situation here.

A few of the teams who did well last season could see themselves doing an Everton or Blackburn this season. Charlton without Scott Parker and Fulham without Louis Saha in particular, although Rommedahl is a great signing and I'd like to see Carlton Cole do well.

I reckon Spurs still have a couple of signings in them - we need another decent centreback and a creative midfielder, but the two biggest sins of the Hoddle-Pleat era (lack of decent tacklers in midfield and playing Ledley King out of the back four despite shipping in goals by the ton) have hopefully been dealt with. I don't expect us to set the world on fire but hopefully it should be a decent season.

Top Three will be *very* tight indeed, but I reckon Manyoo with more striking options (and therefore less reliance on Van Nistelrooy) and Rio Ferdinand back will be vastly improved. Liam Miller could be another decent signing in central midfield as well, taking the pressure off Keane a bit. I think Arsenal will be weakened by the loss of Viera and so much depends on Chelsea's strikers being able to produce the goods - it could go any way of three.

One of either Everton or Man City is *definitely* going down, both looked pretty terrible towards the end of last season and the clubs seem to be in freefall.

i will bet money with anyone now that both teams will stay up and relegation will be less of a threat for both than last season. Rooney is surely going to perform better for his club, while he remains there. And I'm banking on the resurgence of Robbie Fowler to help City out.

I agree that it will be very close at the top, and I can see another substantial gap after the top three. Relegated: Palace bottom, then two of Norwich, West Brom (when was the last time the three promoted clubs all went back down, if ever?), Man City, Everton and Blackburn.

Marie O'Brien, from Southampton, ought to be the tough right back they need to seal off the field. Real Madrid officials have reportedly told Spanish daily Marca that there is no truth in the rumours linking them with a move for Michael Owen.
The British press had claimed that Real were willing to pay Liverpool £10 million plus Fernando Morientes or Samuel Eto’o in return for the England internatioal who has just a year left on his Anfield contract.

Real coach Jose Antonio Camacho has made it clear that reinforcements in the defensive and midfield positions are his top priority.

Samuel is a great signing for Real, I think. Owen less so - which of Ronaldo and Raul is he to displace from the first team? I can imagine Owen ending up on the bench an awful lot, which seems unlikely to do him any good. Also, Real still need to sort out Viera and maybe another good defender too, whereas they already have probably the best array of attacking talent any team has ever had - look at the attacking reserves they are allegedly talking of swapping for Owen!

It's the fact that we feel the need to sell him at all... he had a bit of a dodgy season last year and he was still second or third highest scoring Englishman in the league. And we didn't exactly get many goals from anyone else (though Phillips was really starting to come good towards the end). We need some good, solid first-team players, cos though we've got a load of promising young types (from what I saw of Folly, he's gonna be something brilliant), we do need some people that have got it together already. Which isn't really Peter Crouch, to be brutally honest.

Gravesen agreed to see out his contract but will leave on a free in 12 months, we'll get a maximum of one more season out of Wayne. I'm probably forgetting a couple. We've signed Cahill and Bent, which is all right I suppose.

Thankfully Kevin Campbell appears to be fit again, but that's in a relative sense. He is 49 years old.

Speaking of Latch, as I so often do, sometimes in my sleep - I was watching a bit of my grebt eBay win Match Of The Day: Seven Goal Thrillers video last night and there he was, in his Brum days, scoring a cracker to put B'ham C 3-1 up at Anfield in late '72. The Reds came back, of course, Toshack scoring the winner as the rain lashed down.

It was funny/sad that Fat Bob had no difficulty beating Clemence and Grobbelaar at Anfield when playing for Birmingham or Swansea, but failed to ever get on the score sheet in a Merseyside derby in seven seasons. This is the void, and I'm looking into it.

As predicted Wigan are walking away with the Champions' league, and gloriously Ipswich are so far managing to keep them within distance (and we are the highest scorers in the country with a defence much improved on last years horror show). I'm also enjoying Norwich's very agreable winless run (Only 23 more days and it will be the longest Premiership sequence without a win!)

SPL: Celtic.
1st Division: Ross County
2nd Division: Morton
3rd Division: Gretna.

I'm standing by my SPL and 3rd Division predictions. My overestimation of Ross County may have been someone biased from reading pre-season blurb in Highland newspapers. I should have said Clyde out of loyalty to the mister, but they lost their manager, sold all their good players and were favourites for relegation. Good on them, but I think it'll be Falkirk's year now. I remain oblivious to what's going on in the second division.

new season in the 1st dvision. whats up with norwich suddenly zooming ahead?

mind you, im sick of all the papers painting relegation as "disaster, apocalypse" etc, theres not much difference, except in the first divisin youve got a better chance of seeing a few wins.

yay that means as well as my everton prediction, I'd also have predicted correctly which two of the three newly promoted teams to go straight back down! go me! (but of course norwich aren't exactly mid-table just now, and sadly both man city and tottenham are on equal points mid table)
