collared shirt tucked into jeans: classic or don't?

i don't see this much lately--the hipsters seem to be un-tucking their shirts.

however i think this can work as long as the jeans don't sit to high on the waist.

what do you think?

most of my shirts are kind of long to un-tuck without looking like a schlep or a hippie.

this is w/r/t men.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i never ever EVER tuck in my shirts, except when i'm wearing a suit, so don't.

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, so "don't".

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but all my shirts are too long! i hate that look.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

this is a very big issue in my life.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

why would you want to tuck your shirt in?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

also, there are plenty of tailors/seamstresses around that would happily fix your shirts if they're too long.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, yeah, some people look fucking awful tucking their shirts into jeans. i see these people on the trains all the time. i don't want to be one of them.

on the other hand, people wearing really really long shirts un-tucked into their pants look silly too, i think.

i have a hard time finding shirts of the right length. like a *really* hard time. i think that's cause i've gotten kind of thick.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean how far down should an un-tucked shirt go? i think just a few inches below the belt. however some of my shirts would sink nearly a foot below the belt. i'd look like some kind of schleppy hippie.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think i can afford to tailor all the shirts i have (esp since i paid less than $3 for half of them)

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

just get a pair of siccors, or shirts that fit you

Aja (aja), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

white oxford shirts tucked into jeans is classic. tucking other shirts into well-fitting jeans, with a belt, is kind of a fashion forward move right about now, but only the savviest hipsters have figured it out. it also looks better.

dan (dan), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

aja did you read the 400 posts where i mentioned having a hard time finding shirts that fit me?

scissors: very very bad idea.

well fitting jeans? like sort of snug? hm.

i'm hopeless.

(of COURSE i'd use a belt. i never go out without a belt. ever.)

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

scissors. oh!

Excusse me, I'm really worried about my Religion homework, and I actually need some scissors

Aja (aja), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

buy straight-cut shirts if you can find 'em

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

aja did you read the 400 posts where i mentioned having a hard time finding shirts that fit me?

uhh, no. When was this?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i am having MAJOR belt issues lately! i used to be like amateurist but i developed some kind of metal allergy and now all belts really irritate me and my pants fall down all the time!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i think un-tucked shirts look stupid if they are hanging down below your ass. that's my problem. i need shirts that, when not tucked in, only go down a few inches (like 3?) below the waist. maybe i will get my shirts tailored.

i have one black shirt that fits well un-tucked but i don't really like wearing black shirts. (fascist iconography aside.)

i used to be like amateurist but i developed some kind of metal allergy and now all belts really irritate me and my pants fall down all the time!

sounds like some kind of porn comedy

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

why is finding clothes so fucking difficult?????????????????????????

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

use suspenders, or a rope

Aja (aja), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm puzzled by this untucked shirts fad, too. it looks sloppy. but maybe i'm turning into a grumpy old fart.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

never tuck your shirt in. get them tailored.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

ironic belt-buckle = the new trucker hat?

amateur!st - most dept. stores have a tailor that will properly measure you for your shirt size for free.

joseph pot (STINKOR™), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm telling you--the untucked thing is going to lose steam quickly.

dan (dan), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

suspenders would be the same problem, but no kidding i am seriously considering using a rope, like some ragamuffin kid from lil abner or something

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

use an extension cord instead of a rope.

joseph pot (STINKOR™), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

the only shirts i seem to find that are the right lenth are really tiny in the chest and look stupid on me (i.e. like i'm trying to be some emaciated hipster, which i'm NOT).

i think i have a good basic fashion sense but i can never, ever find the right clothes. mostly because i have no money at all and am forced to shop at goodwill or the cheaper chain stores.

i think i might just wear a sweater today. though even my sweater is kind of wrong.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

JUST a sweater?

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my!

Aja (aja), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean jeans and a sweater over a t-shirt, not a collared shirt and a jacket.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Slutsky, you should just tuck your singlet in under your shirt. That way the belt buckle won't touch your skin.

antexit (antexit), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

sweater tucked into sweatpants: classic or classy?

joseph pot (STINKOR™), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

that is also my plan! but when i wear polo shirts that is not an option. (hi!) (xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

then get your favorite shirts altered, amateurist. there's nothing better than wearing stuff that fits you right, even if its a little extra cash. i know this because i can never find anything that fits my body right, so i wind up making a lot of my own clothes.

im not entirely crazy about tucked in stuff but if it looks good on someone, i am all for it. i just happen to see a lot of collegiate douchebags sporting this style, hence my aversion.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i tuck my shirts in.
i dont fucking care and people say i look nice, so there.

tuck it in without shame.

todd swiss (eliti), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

what extra cash? $10 is more than i can afford right now. :-(

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

its really not that expensive for alterations. ive had shirts altered for around 10$.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

polo shirts under shirts: c or d?

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah do it - especially if your shirts have a nice fit, it only looks bad if the shirt is kinda bouffy and ballons out above the belt. the fact that some people think it's a no-go is exactly the reason to do it.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm so confused.

which one of you has good taste?

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i do.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

me too.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

jed, todd, and i have good taste.

dan (dan), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i have great taste, learned only after years of committing many fashion crimes.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

commiting fashion crimes IS good taste anyway. withness my cock and sandal combo.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

and I think jed_ is otm in that tucking in your shirt can look v. nice if the shirt is a real nice fit & also yr quite slim to six-packed but otherwise I think it looks a bit bad, routinely. I wd never tuck bt by the same token, as you're saying amst, I wd never wear a shirt untucked tht was too long, it looks kinda awful. I find most shirts tht are to fit my neck size (15.5) are awful untucked. below that (14.5 / 15) the lengths of the shirts are ok. wear with a plain t-shirt underneath?

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

'cock and sandal combo.'

!!!

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Always tuck in a collared shirt. Always. Or else you look like a complete fucking slob. And who wants that?

The idea of spending money to get a dress shirt tailored specifically so you can leave it untucked ... well, that's completely asinine. The things are long because they're MEANT to be tucked in.

(Of course, I assume we're talking about a button-down type dress shirt, not all shirts with collars like polo/golf shirts and the like)

Reed Moore (diamond), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

the idea of taking this beautiful 100% cotton shirt ...

http://www.brooksbrothers.com/Images/Catalog/ProductImages/220Q.jpg

and taking it to a tailor to have it SHORTENED?? spending extra money, and ruining a nice shirt, to enable yourself to look like an indie douchebag complete slob and leave the thing untucked??

candour floss (mwah), Saturday, 25 September 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

FF? I don't reckon I can recall what they look like. They don't really register in my universe. I did really enjoy Rob Sheffield's review where he discusses the song where they play at being gay, though I still haven't heard the song in question. And I HAVE been feeling a little randy lately, so you may be on to something...

Reed Moore (diamond), Saturday, 25 September 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

La Monte (La Monte), Saturday, 25 September 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

some of this is rehashing and the rest makes me sound like either vice magazine or queer eye for the straight guy [you decide!]:

some collared shirts can look good untucked and some of them look better tucked in. if you really really like a shirt but its too big DO get it tailored [it is not as expensive as people think!] being a cheap-ass will only make you look as such.

the key ingredient to pulling off a shirt is not the shirt itself, its how you wear it with pants. pleated front pants will make you look like either a fratboy douchebag and/or pudgy. make sure your pants are not too baggy and long. [believe it or not, i can tell if a dude is a mama's boy and so on by the way they wear their pants]

make sure to wear a belt and see that the seam of your shirt runs straight down through the belt buckle and zipper/fly of your pants. non-scrawny-indie-rocker-cum-drug-addict dudes take note: this will make you appear slimmer, as you'll be creating one long line. for those in the military, you will be familiar with this rule already.

i say these things because i love you all and im shallo and there's nothing i enjoy more in the world than staring at neatly dressed boys. clearly this thread wouldnt exist if you werent trying to care about your appearance.

this dude always dresses well:

currently none of my shirts feel so long that they have to be tucked in, but I've been losing weight and my jeans now feel too baggy for my tastes. I've had my more fashion-conscious friends reassure me that they're not horrifically so, but after seeing photos of my high school days I want to steer clear of such unwarranted flappage.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 25 September 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

(Of course, I assume we're talking about a button-down type dress shirt, not all shirts with collars like polo/golf shirts and the like)

no, not necessarily dress shirts. i save dress shirts for dress pants. just collared shirts, like the one's you'd get at the gap or wherever, only i got most of mine at goodwill.

i resolved this dillemma tonight by sidestepping it: i rocked the cursed chris martin look: jeans, black t-shirt, and cord blazer.

but this issue will surely come up again.

p.s. c0zen mentioned up above that you can rock the tucked-in look if you are slim/built. unfortunately i am neither. i have a belly that if i let myself go just a bit more would be spilling all over the place. but if i wear a nice shirt you wouldn't really notice it. actually i think you'd notice it less if i had the shirt tucked in.

maria: yes, seam should always match belt buckle. and pleats? who do you think i am? i never wear pleats.

how did this work out in the end?

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 30 September 2004 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Some dress shirts look like hell when the tails are out. Wear a Thomas Pink shirt untucked and your outfit will resemble a salwar kameez.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Thursday, 30 September 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The better the shirt, the worse it looks untucked IMHO. And not just dress shirts like Pink that're made to be worn w/a suit. This summer in LA I saw the untucked collared shirtlook all everywhere, and all the guys look like they're trying to hide their spare tire.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Thursday, 30 September 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

A formal dress shirt with jeans? That is so wrong.

As far as I am concerned you shouldn't tuck any type of shirt into jeans.

Formal trousers however are a whole different fish kettle, then tuck away, but no t-shirts or polo shirts.

The semi formal/casual trouser is where I think the confusion lies.

Davel (Davel), Thursday, 30 September 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

mostly because i have no money at all and am forced to shop at goodwill or the cheaper chain stores.

here's my suggestion: save up your pennies. go to a nice department store. buy five shirts that fit you properly that are of a good quality.
take good care of them. use them only for work, take them off as soon as you come home, hang them on wooden hangers, wear undershirts, etc.
do not buy any other shirts.
when these shirts wear out on you, use the saved money to buy new ones.
buying a quality garment that fits you that you wear every day is infinitely better than buying a bunch of cheap shitty garments that don't fit you. you'll look and feel better in a quality shirt... especially if it FITS.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 30 September 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Tucking in your shirt when you aren't at work is like masturbating when a super hottie is standing there, offering to give you head for free. What the fuck people.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 30 September 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I always tuck, unless it's a polo or I'm drunk n dancing.
That said I hold special rancor for that certain brand of midwestern ADULT male who feels the need to tuck polo shirts into SHORTS, with a belt.

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 30 September 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think generally any shirt that's cut longer in the back than in the front should be tucked in. Shirts that are cut evenly all the way around should not be.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 30 September 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

How can you tuck with jeans??? Unless you are going for the uncool Dad look.

so this tuck thing is coming back, then? because the only people who seem to tuck are the Carson Kressley Crowd. or the aforementioned Uncool Dads.

Catty (Catty), Thursday, 30 September 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know - all I know is the untuck thing is getting way out of control. It's like the cargo pants thing was about five years ago. Even my boss walks around with his shirt untucked now.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 30 September 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It depends on the shirt and the circumstances really. Long sleeved shirts should generally be tucked in when youre at work. Short sleeved shirts you can get away with not tucking in at work. For going out and whatnot, tucking in your shirt makes you look like a square if youre under 40.

ALWAYS WEAR A FUCKING BELT IF YOU TUCK IN THE SHIRT.

still bevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 30 September 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

but i am a square

this thread is confusing

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Thursday, 30 September 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm all for the tuck. I used to never tuck, ever. But once you start you realize it just looks better. As folks pointed out upthread, it really depends on what your jeans look like and what shoes you're wearing, though. For instance, if you're wearing light blue Levi's 505s and penny loafers you look like a twat.

If they're fashion-forward GYN's that might be a good thing!

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 30 September 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm convinced that when a store clerk tells you that your outfit is "fashion-forward" s/he's actually saying "you look like an ass, but i could use the comission."

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Thursday, 30 September 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I like honesty. I am a slob. I like to look like a slob.

Plus, 3/4 of my height rests in my legs, and when I tuck it makes me look like I have no torso, as though my shoulders flow seemlessly into my hips.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 30 September 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 30 September 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I also am a gigantic fan of the shirt ends sticking out the bottom of sweatervests look.

yep, i do this too, but if it's done incorrecly it looks assinine.

i never tuck polos or t-shirts and tucking any shirt into jeans is always a risky proposition, but it depends on the particular outfit. i disagree with the always wear a belt comment and tucking in general depends on the cut of the shirt. if it's a long sleeve button down, chances are it belongs tucked. unless it doesn't.

When I went to my sisters wedding my then b/friend insisted on keeping his shirt un-tucked, even while he was wearing a suit, he was in his early 20s then, and tucked in shirts were considered too office nerd/college boy. (even if it was the way I wore them!)

now when he went to another wedding last month he went very neatly dressed with his shirt tucked + tie, not thinking over 1 minute to leave it untucked. he is 29 now.

ps. we didn't break off 'cos of this. ;-)

erik, Saturday, 2 October 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Younger people have generally not tucked in the UK for about 15 years. It's got really boring, and the last few years, cooler people have been tucking in. It does help if you're not tubby, yes.

When I tuck, I still regularly get slovenly oafs going - ooh no, mustn't tuck.

With T-shirts, I like to shove in one side tight and leave the other looser. Maybe asymmetry is passé now, I don't know, but I still like it.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 2 October 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
I have been tucking lots more lately! It is a new exciting stuffvista, for sure. It does look better.

Next question: Where in the UK do I get cool belts? I have a really hard time finding belts that fit, mostly I need to make holes deep into the material, 'cos I'm all small-waisted like.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 18 October 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

My button-up shirts always blouse when I tuck them in -- I have fairly broad shoulders and a narrow-ish waist, and since most American dress shirts are cut straight as hell with no taper, I poof out. The only shirts I've been able to find locally that work are Banana Republic "fitted" (or something) dress shirts, but they're like $70 apiece, and I definitely don't wear dress shirts nearly enough to justify spending that kind of dough.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Monday, 18 October 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Any advice, btw? Anyone know of other fitted-style tapering dress shirts that are a bit more modestly priced?

Brooks Brothers are around 60 and should fit your type.

The un-tucked look is a fad that's going to end soon. Esp. the diagonal stripes, short shirt tail made-to-be-left-out shirts. It's always looked stupid unless you were a model or a (young) movie star--and that's why it's not going to last.

Ordinary guys--read FAT guys with beer bellies--are going to start untucking en masse. "Hey, look, it's the style, and it makes me look thinner!" Except that it doesn't. Hipsters and movie stars will not want to wear the look after it's fully exported to the 4,000 calorie per day crowd and they'll move on to something else that only looks good on 6'2"-165 lbs.-18 year olds.

Of course, everything looks good on them!

I have been known to go up to people in public and untuck their shirts for them (albeit only when v. drunk). I once approached a boy at a bar and said "You are quite cute. Why in god's name have you tucked your shirt in? You could go up like 5 notches in as many seconds."

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Silky Sensor (sexyDancer), Thursday, 24 March 2005 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Now that a lot of men's trousers have a lower-than-before rise, the tucking is a lot more, umm, sightly. It’s really all about that shortened rise. And a well-sized shirt, obviously. Sometimes a flat stomach helps, too.

I've decided this looks best when the contrast between jeans and shirt is profound -- ultra-ratty jeans, basically, paired with an obviously-classy and maybe even somewhat silky shirt. (NB ultra-ratty does not = Diesel-bleach disasters.)
