My friend, currently living in Barcelona, is going to be on some kind of exchange thing in NYC from september to christmas, and has asked me if anyone could help her sort out some work, or give her some work, or knows someone who might. i think her bf will be there legit for work/school type purposes, but i'm guessing no work visa for her, so it would be cash-in-hand, under-the-table type stuff.

the hungarian pastry shop, located at 110th and amsterdam hires with loose regard to citizenship status. it's a combination barista/waitress type of job, people give their orders at the front, then sit down and you bring them their coffee. you can really make decent money during busy hours too.

NYC is in my experience one of the best places to work under the table, with few big corporate chains and lots of little independent places struggling to stay afloat.

about 2/3 the restaurants & bars ive worked at have been cash-in-hand and had dirty foreigners on staff. the money is pretty decent. at least $100 per shift, sometimes $200 or more.

Yeah, I kinda sometimes think of NYC as a place where it's hard to work over the table. When it comes to retail and service type stuff there's plenty of semi-exploitative opportunities, and that's leaving alone the whole world of freelancey or contracty things you can do for people. I mean, geez, this city has a practically third-world level of people just improvising their shit.

Also, is it possible to live in NYC for two months and pay under $1300 for rent? I would like to do so but am afraid it is impossible (for various unique reasons in each case, I cannot ask to stay with any of my friends from there).

It's possible, Maria. I think you'd have to find someone, probably in Brooklyn, who's looking to sublet something for just the right two months -- and definitely with other people, like a spare two months on one room in a three-person loft. In other words, coincidences may be needed. But $1300 is a reasonable enough amount to put into it, particularly for an awkward two-month thing where the subletter doesn't have a whole lot of leeway.

craigslist is a good place to look, but don't forget that you might need to pay a deposit even if it's just a 2 month sublet. people in nyc tend to be crazy about deposits.

Help me, NYC ILx, you're my only hope.

So I'll be in New York in a couple of weeks (A COUPLE OF WEEKS! FANTASTIC!) and I need some relatively specialised advice. Here's how it is:

My aeroplane is scheduled to touch down at JFK 11.55am on Thursday 15th June. There is a game of our soccer which I would very much like to see, and that game kicks off at noon that day. Now I reckon my chances of seeing the whole game are something like my chances of being called up at the last minute to play in the team, but I think and hope I can catch some of it. So I am looking for a recommendation for a bar (or similar) which will:

(a) be open at noon on the 15th
(2) be showing the World Cup of footballsoccer at noon on the 15th
(iii) be easy and relatively quick to get to from JFK, either by public transportation or in an cab taxi vehicle
(d) be the kind of place where a blatant Englishperson or two could safely and sensibly watch an England game on the telly without being robbed or otherwise molested.

My good friend Tim is hoping to join me, he'll be in NYC already, staying in Greenwich Village. He'll be able to travel in time for kick-off, but somewhere sensibly navigable from the Village would be superperfect.

Am I asking for the moon on a sticky stick?

I hope also we will drink, NYC, but that question is for another thread and perhaps even another day.

Best bet would probably be McCormack's--you could take the shuttle bus from JFK to Grand Central ($10), walk a couple blocks east to Third Ave, then down a few blocks til you get there. I've watched games there before, it's pretty good.

I've no way of telling whether the bars cited in Brooklyn / Queens in the link mookie posted are likely to be dangerous or not. It's not so much that I mind for myself, because I can always chicken out of going in somewhere if it looks shady, but it would be bad to arrange to meet a friend somewhere on the dodgy side.

Hey Tim!

Just to give another option, you should come to Floyd's. It's in Brooklyn so will take slightly less time to get to. It's an English stylee pub so you'd be right at home, plus there's a greasy chip shop (called Chip Shop) next door. Then after the match you could walk down to the Promenade and see the lovely view of Manhattan.

Or McCormack's is good if you want to save some money on transportation, although the bus takes longer. Oh, and I can guarantee that Nevada Smith's will be showing the match and will also be completely packed.

If you go to Sunnyside (a rather Irish part of Queens) you shouldn't have any trouble finding an appropriate spectation spot, and no it's not dangerous. This place is supposed to be good, and most of mookieproof's link's places are right around there too. See also this list.

Unless the Brooklyn / Queens pub is fairly close to either JFK or the freeway (or the A train) it won't necessarily save you any time, believe me. The fastest thing might be to find a place in downtown Brooklyn and take the A to borough hall. It's always a crapshoot though.

You can take the Airtrain to the A and if it's running fast you can get to the Hoyt-Schemerhorn stop and jog over to Smithwick's in about 40 minutes. It's always hard to tell what the traffic's going to be like back from JFK at a given time of the day, but it can take forever to drive anywhere from there, whereas I've been shocked how fast the A gets there.

(xpost) Realistically, it might be very tight to make it somewhere in time. You've got to account for your plane actually arriving on time, getting through customs, picking up your luggage (assuming you don't do carry-on), waiting in the queue for a taxi, then travel time (last night it took me 25 minutes to get from JFK to downtown Brooklyn, and that was without any traffic). If you're intent on catching the game, your best bet might be to find an airport bar instead!

I can't imagine a Queens/Brooklyn bar being dangerous, at least one showing a football game in the middle of the day. I'd worry a lot more about getting to it, and then getting from it to Manhattan. It conceivably could be faster to just go to Manhattan first.

i'm going to advocate for the alibi in ft greene brooklyn. it will not be crowded, it will not charge a cover, it will be showing the world cup and it's a dive bar with a soccer fanatic owner. it's also closer to the airport than anything mentioned so far.

take the airtrain to the A - take the A toward manhattan to nostrand ave - take the C 2 stops toward manhattan to clinton/washington - walk four blocks north. the whole trip should take about 45-50 min. as others have mentioned taking a cab that time of day is a crap shoot but probably wouldn't take any longer than the subway, cost: $40 - $50.

JFK customs could take a while to clear. When I met my friend out there about 2 weeks ago, it took him more than 30 minutes to get through because 4 international flights landed at about the same time & there were long lines. Good luck on your soccer quest!

I have taken public transport into Manhattan from JFK before, and my main memory of doing so is blundering around at a bunch of ticket machines, all touristy fingers and thumbs. Though I'm normally not a fellow to take cabs anywhere, the idea of someone who knows where they are going taking me directly to my destination is fairly appealing, as you can perhaps imagine. Appealing enough to be worth twenty quid.

not to ft. greene/clinton hill. used to live over there, and i doubt any cab home from jfk was more than like $28-$30, if i remember correctly. and in the middle of the day it'll be quick, fo' sho.

I still vote for Floyd's, if nothing else because it's close to my apartment and the people who work there are nice.

Last week my cabbie took some sort of weird backroad from Carroll Gardens to JFK that only took 20 minutes (during rush hour). The bad news was that he regaled me with stories about being in the Greek navy, getting into lots of fights, and his hatred for black people.

Trip on the way home on the Beltparkway cost about $35 (including tip), but luckily no such crazy stories.

It started off kind of charming in the crazy taxi driver sort of way, but by the time I got to JFK I was seriously freaked out. Somewhere around the time he talked about throwing scalding hot coffee in some guy's face and then demanding that a black guy "leap out his car" or he was going to kill him.

Tim, I can attest that Floyd (I always call it Floyd's) is a nice place and has a projection TV so you shouldn't have trouble seeing the match, assuming you make it there from JFK in time. My advice on cell phones is to try to pick the plan that most of your friends/family have, since most have unlimited in-network calls that comes in handy. Beyond that, Verizon has decent range but yes awful, awful customer service. My gf has also run through three RAZR phones and they keep crapping out on her.

I think Tim has made a good choice with Floyd and I am really sorry that I can't get out of work to come watch the match with him.

And yes I know SLGTM and they are worth the trip to that shitty place called Williamsburg.

So I've been up for 24 hours and am feeling suitably scrambled, especially given the fistful o' Brooklyn lager I took medicinally (for the nerves innit) just past noon, by which time I'd been up for 13 hours or so already. So don't be expecting much in the way of sense from me.

I had to buy some non-greasy sunblock in an attempt to prevent my rapidly balding pate from looking like a tomato, or perhaps a baked bean in tomato sauce. Definitely something tomato related.

Friday plan: tootle around NYC I guess, take in a little art in Chelsea maybe, get the ferry in the late afternoon. I'd post my mobile telephone number but I'm not that sleep deprived, yet.

That awful Benson home run notwithstanding, I had a lovely time at the ol ballpark with Tim and Felicity. Row V is the very last row at the stadium, and remarkably a very pleasant way to watch the game. Nice breeze and view of Manhattan through the fence up there.

You're right, that proposal totally sucks. But it's a proposal for a radical upzoning of Williamsburg coming from an outside developer that current zoning does not allow and that nobody in Williamsburg actually wants. I'm not sure how it makes Williamsburg shitty that some pig of a developer has (theoretical) designs on it.

28 obnoxious, over-sized high-rises with absolutely no regard for basic infrastructure in williamsburg sounds like a great idea to me. might as well build tons of housing in an already shitty area so as to reduce price pressure in areas i actually want to live.

letham's rant on the atlantic yards (which i live 3 blocks away from) didn't really do anything to change my feelings on the thing - still v mixed.

the argument that most confounds me is It's the scale, stupid - as if this isn't new york. the krazy quilt of different architectural styles and sizes is a big part of what gives it charm, no? the fact that people look at brooklyn's brownstone neighborhoods and see architectural harmony speaks to the pervasiveness of the disarray. in ft greene (where i live) there are brownstones hard against prewar apartment buildings 50 years newer and three times as tall. there's 20+ story projects across the street from single story retail strips. there's a building made out of trash. there's old carriage houses and even a few mansions. from my window i can see a bunch of buildings over 20 stories. there is no architectural consistency and it's quite lovely.

the general shitty ghost-town quality of most huge urban projects and the blade runner feel of this one's design argue better against it than any weird preservationism.

Is Marchand de Legumes (Japanese novelty store) still in Nolita? I walked by where I thought it would be on Elizabeth Street between Houston and Prince but I didn't see it. And wasn't there another store that sold Marchand de Legumes products somewhere else in Nolita? My NYC is rusty.
