― ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:28 (nineteen years ago) link
Another way of putting it is that, until (I assume) you reach a certain level, it often feels as if you lose because of a mistake rather than because of choices you've made. (Although perhaps they still feel like mistakes, even at that level?)
(The Problem with go is that it takes a zillion games before you even begin to have a sense of how the pieces work. It doesn't take quite as long in chess to stop flailing around pointlessly as much.)

― Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 20:02 (nineteen years ago) link
But then I'm still working through my fabled first 50 games of go. I beat the GNU go last night with a 7x7 board and 2 starter pieces, so I felt a bit proud of that. Then I tried it again and it smote me.
By saying there is a "Problem" with either game I am not saying they are bad games. The actual Problem with chess is that it has been analysed to death, and I suspect Fischer Random Chess is the better game. But I haven't played it yet (or, I always play as if I'm playing it).

(7x7 with 2 stones is impressive!)
I guess so. I tend to lose by 10 points or so with no handicap stones, though. And it won't let me take just 1 handicap stone.
I have already resigned in my Ken rematch. Dude fucking blitzkreiged me.
― Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:28 (nineteen years ago) link
i just got checkmated by chris p! i totally overlooked an obvious mistake, and was way way too fixated on this one checkmate possibility i would have had if i could have only gotten him to move his one rook.
i suck at chess. but it's fun.
― JuliaA (j_bdules), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:38 (nineteen years ago) link
One handicap stone doesn't really have any meaning - it'd actually be a disadvantage, moving first but having no choice where to put the stone? Small advantages are generally done with point bonuses (or lack of the normal one).
You are maybe right, about exceptions. I should revise.

I beat the 7x7 with no handicap stones, at last. The game, on the small scale, is starting to fill me with less dread.

But isn't the programme designed to play like a master? I mean, it beats me easier than anyone on redhotpawn, Yahoo Chess, and offline too. Not to mention that playing in real time makes things more challenging. The programme plays with my head - I think I've made a safe capture of a major rank but actually I've played a part in creating a setup that materializes 5 moves later and which ends up cutting me off from even moving.
What's a good book on strategy that's easy to follow? I took out Evans' Chess Questions Answered, which is useful, but I find its layout to not be totally user-friendly.
Tomorrow night I aim to see if chess lessons can be transferred to the kickboxing ring.

I think I just got lucky in the first game. My rating is down to 1311, Ken's is 1441.

Zep, I was thinking if you did 43. Kf1 you would have been able to draw me (since I would have been wiggling my rook and king around to keep you in check) but I've been playing around with it and after 43. Kf1 Rf2 comes 44. ...Rxf5 and it should be possible to pluck off the rest of your pawns before (or, at worst, immediately after) they queen. And a rook is enough to mate. (Here's the game.)
(Beyond that, 6. f3 seems like it was an iffy move, even though it is superficially similar to what I did with 3. ...d6, but moving the d pawn helps my development and control of the center in ways that your f pawn only dreams about. 6. d3 seems like a much better choice there.)

I have to say, I'm completely disappointed about the blunder that ended our last game, which was quite the game. I was curious how the rest of the game was going to wind out. I think I had a slight advatage of position and time but even a single rook is a menace and bishop + knight mates are arduous.

For those of you interested in "realtime" I've been playing on FICS, www.freechess.org, which has a rather Unix-y interface but which is pretty great once you figure out how it works (and once you get a graphical interface). My nick there is, unsurprisingly, "Casuistry" (though I will probably not be back on until Saturday).

(Actually, looking at that game, it's totally baffling. Why 4...Nb8? Why did White challenge the bishop, and then not take the exchange? I understand not wanting to mess up the King-castle pawn structure, but then why invite the exchange in the first place?)

Stevem, I apologize for tromping all over you with my queen. I don't know why you first developed that knight to a3 but don't do that again. ;-)
And watch out for that Scholar's mate. Someone did that to me not long ago on FICS and I felt like a maroon.

Actually, I don't think the ratings mean a huge amount unless you've played a lot of games - I've just beaten someone with a rating of 1660 who missed a mate in 1, but a 1200 is giving me a good game at the mo.

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 b5 5. Bb3 Nf6 6. Bd5 h6? {This move just seems to waste time, my bishop isn't even able to move yet!} 7. Nxe5 Qe7 8. Nxc6 Qc5 9. Na5 c6 10. d4 Qb4+ 11. Bd2 Qxd4 12. Nxc6 Qxb2 13. Bc3! {And now black queen is trapped -- no matter where it moves, it will be taken the next turn, not even Bb4 would help (and no, I didn't realize this until after I had moved).} Qxa1 14. Bxa1 Bb7 15. Na5 Bxd5 16. exd5 Bb4+ 17. Bc3 Bxc3+ 18. Nxc3 O-O 19. d6 Rae8+ 20. Ne2 Ne4 21. O-O Re6 22. Nb7 Rb8 23. f3 Rxb7 24. fxe4 Rxe4 25. Qd5 Rxe2 26. Qxb7 Rxc2 27. Qxd7 Rxa2 28. He could have had the satisfaction of b1=Q but it would still have been Qxg7# the next move -- there was no way to avoid that.
I'm sure my opening idea, of grabbing his rook with the bishop, could have been defeated otherwise, but I think this is why that 4...b5 is discouraged.

the general consensus seems to be some mixture of study play and puzzles, ive def played way more than the other two and my study consists of watching youtube videos and am not very good lol, i aspire to learn some openings some day

lichess has a cool feature where after your game is over you can review the game with the computer telling you all about the best moves that you shdve done def a good learning practice especially if you had a spot that blew up in yr face, i messed mate in two then got owned the other day i was kinda steaming tbh

have been moderately obsessed with chess for a couple of years now
it is obviously a colossal waste of time and mental energy but it's fun
w/e i kind of want to give it up
if N takes N there, what is the refutation of Q retakes N?
― imago, Thursday, 15 February 2018 16:17 (six years ago) link
youd just have to take the d5 pawn i think

then I sac my shitty bishop on B7 and pick up your other knight a move later. or do you not take the bishop?
― imago, Thursday, 15 February 2018 16:24 (six years ago) link
'a move later' I mean it's the same move so not a sac at all rly

Qxb7 Qxg5
or??

― lag∞n, Thursday, 15 February 2018 16:41 (six years ago) link

― imago, Thursday, 15 February 2018 16:45 (six years ago) link
just tried the Bb7 line with the engine and it kept the queens on the board with all else being pretty similar, which u wld think with my pawn advantage wld be preferable for you but the engine doesnt see it that way idk why
― lag∞n, Thursday, 15 February 2018 16:48 (six years ago) link
maybe it was just one of the other positions along the way had a better chance of tripping me up but didnt because i was actually the engine playing itself
― lag∞n, Thursday, 15 February 2018 16:49 (six years ago) link

obv Qxc2 asking to be played but Qxg3 has some kind of hard-to-describe appeal

if Qxc2 then Ne6 is crushing
― imago, Thursday, 15 February 2018 17:02 (six years ago) link

only if it improves their position, trading pieces is a great way to stay ahead, particularly trading queens decreases variance, unless u just want your queen for fun in which case whos to argue

― Mordy, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:24 (six years ago) link
The hypermodern choice, Nf6 creates a dynamic imbalance right off the bat by attacking the center with a knight rather than occupying it with a pawn. This usually signals one of the Indian defenses, such as the Queen's Indian or the Nimzo-Indian, and can also lead to the Grunfeld Defence or the Benoni. However, transpositions back into other openings are still possible at this early point. This has become, by far, the most popular response to 1.d4, representing more than half of the high-level games played in most databases.

― lag∞n, Monday, 26 February 2018 17:59 (six years ago) link
feel like ive seen that with the one where u sacrifice a couple pawns cant remember if it q or k side i fell for it once and got wrecked then saw it a couple more times and didnt take the second pawn and there was def a long pause on the other side
― lag∞n, Monday, 26 February 2018 18:02 (six years ago) link
i always play scandi against king's pawn opening and the length of time it takes the person to decide indicates whether they accept the pawn sacrifice (the right, quick move), or move the pawn to e5 (the wrong move)
― Mordy, Monday, 26 February 2018 18:07 (six years ago) link
ppl are so wary of accepting pawn sacs (i mean rightly so)
btw i've complained about this on the other chess thread i'm pretty sure but i'm always shocked at how shitty the attitude and behavior of some of these players are considering that you'd figure chess attracts a more sophisticated thinker?

that's what i've heard - that you get much more out of playing longer formats. but it's just so nice to play in these 10 min bursts and not have to worry about games dragging on.

lol youre not even allowed to talk about it on the chess.com forums
david #9 Oct 6, 2017Mentions are okay if it's about a game you played there recently or something like that. Any comparisons, however, are not okay, and unfortunately asking how ratings there compare to ratings here is included in that. Chess.com policy is that any such comparison is not allowed in our own forums - it's a matter of it leading to claims and counter claims and arguments that are essentially irreconcilable, much like politics or religion.
I am now locking this thread.

the opposite of feeling terrible bc you lost on time when you had pieces up is winning with only 13 seconds left on the clock when your opponent has 5 min left but he blundered a bunch of pieces away bc he was trying to force a win on time

won again with 19:17 left this time, feel like the longer games might be softer than blitz on lichess i just mopped up a 1620, seems like the players minds are just moving slower rather than taking the time to make better moves, tho in this game i thought i had my opponent trapped and he managed to dig his way out after a long think, maybe training yrself to think fast in blitz then taking time to think in longer time controls is the way to go, just have to have enough discipline to actually take the time to think lol
maybe doing jerry style thinking out loud wld help, have some stock questions u ask yrself and so forth

feel they didnt play totally conservatively, like caruana played a gambit one game carlsen played the sicilian every time, imo it was more a combo of playing pretty conservatively being insanely prepared and just being too good? like in the computer analysis at the end of the game itd be all 1 inaccuracy 0 mistakes 0 blunders 6 centipawn loss every time except some games there were zero inaccuracies
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 27 November 2018 06:06 (six years ago) link

i didn't know there was a chess thread at ilm.
my fave opening to get some nice open positions with attacking potential is the king's gambit. especially from's gambit with tactical chances on both sides is a treat.
with black i like to play french after e2-e4 or the wolga gambit when d2-d4 is the first move. that is more of a positional gambit that pays off in the long term.

think the end game is a lot abt calculation and some principles like infiltration and active pieces, putting yr king in the middle of the board, bishops being better than knights especially when the game is being played on both sides of the board
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 20 August 2019 14:33 (five years ago) link

i have played in clubs in my teens in the 70s and later on i founded a club in the 90s. i stopped playing "serious" games in clubs after my youth as it took too much time and i didn't have fun anymore playing those long games for hours and hours. when we founded the club in luxembourg for a while we played in pubs and brought our own games and clocks. we played either blitz or 30 min per game per player games. i loved it. for a year or so i played with a member of the scottish olympic team and lost almost every game. one reason being that i always played king's gambit with white which makes very open games with attacking chances on both sides. i haven't played chess for almost 20 years. what i also loved about our little club, we drank and played. we just played for the company and not to win. it was great.

I’ve worked my way up from “barely remember how the pieces move” to “pretty consistently beating the computer on level 3 at chess.com.” I downloaded lichess because - unlimited puzzles! - but it’s a whole new ball of wax... stockfish lvl 1 takes me in under 25 moves nearly every time. And the solutions to some of the puzzles are... mystifying?

hahaha actually using chess books and working out positions on a real board and calculating lines by yourself is probably superior to watching videos but videos give insight for very little effort and working out positions from a book take a lot more effort. if u want to get better quickly imo play lots of tactics and maybe research an opening line for white

how do you guys deal w/ openings? like getting better at them? i always feel like i'm just kinda playing random moves at first, obv there are like a billion different openings you can memorize but that seems pretty overwhelming.
― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 18 November 2019 03:21 (five years ago) link
i studied a few openings for white + black (more for black since it's more reactionary) and try to review them regularly. chessable.com is good for that as are videos + books.
if you really want to get better prioritize longer time format games since calculating in game (and then reviewing your game afterwards) will make you better. i am v guilty of not doing this enough it's much more pleasurable to play a bunch of shorter time format games (my preference is 10m but shorter w/ an increment can be good too) but like 15m+10s format or just 30m are excellent for getting better.
― Mordy, Monday, 18 November 2019 03:39 (five years ago) link

― lag∞n, Monday, 18 November 2019 03:42 (five years ago) link
i saw someone maybe john bartholomew say that shorter time formats basically just challenge yr habitual knowledge - you play about as well as you currently are when you play them - but you need the longer formats to develop new ways of thinking/seeing the board

lagoon do you ever play bullet? i find it extremely difficult but one thing i struggle w/ in shorter time constraints is that i'll get ahead for most of the game but then run low on time and end up blundering or flagging. so i'm hoping bullet will be like when you're on deck and you swing a few bats so that when you swing one bat at the plate it is much lighter -- that after bullet 10m will feel like a luxury.

this was my goal after i started getting into chess in late 2016 when i was ranked ~1000. i feel v accomplished!
― Mordy, Friday, 22 November 2019 19:16 (five years ago) link
i was close (at 1543) back in June but then had a huge points drop (down to a low of 1296!?!) before bouncing back. during that time i retooled my openings (i stopped playing the roy lopez primarily and switched over to london variations for white, added nimzo-switch for d4 openings), played a lot more tactics (actually got my tactics rating above 2000) and started playing bullet which i really think did help.

ill even give u a lil tip, if youre going to castle king side dont move the f pawn, the f stands for dont fucking touch it
― lag∞n, Thursday, 28 November 2019 19:39 (five years ago) link
the most basic chess advice i guess is to get all yr pieces out and yr kings castled (aka developed, when your rooks have nothing between them [aka connected]) as quickly as possible with as few pawn moves as possible, dont move any piece more than once if you can help it until youre developed
― lag∞n, Thursday, 28 November 2019 19:43 (five years ago) link
the second most basic piece of advice is to not leave pieces unprotected (aka guarded by other pieces or pawns), and likewise to target your opponents unprotected pieces
― lag∞n, Thursday, 28 November 2019 19:44 (five years ago) link
the third most basic piece of advice is to keep yr pawns chained together

not sure whos turn to move it is but based on the body language looks like nash, if so hes in position to take the c pawn and equalize material, crosbys position is better considering the two advanced pawns but its a close game
if its crosbys turn hes up a pawn and has a better position so is clearly ahead, still playable for nash but crosby shd be able to convert

i have been neglecting my long time form games to play exclusively 1m bullet chess for about a month and just hit 1400 in it. it's definitely enough of its own thing that you can't just carry over yr abilities in long form to it. i started playing bc i was having time management problems and i thought about bullet like warming up with two bats that it would be a luxury to play longer formats after that. but it's so addictive. games are over so quickly so you can get a game in whenever, and it's fun!
― Mordy, Wednesday, 26 February 2020 19:12 (four years ago) link
I've been playing 10+0 and slowly dragging my rating out of the absolute toilet over the last month or so, I seem to be actually learning, which is spectacular. Currently 1077 for rapid on lichess, up from a low of 930.

like i mentioned i've barely been playing longer formats in lieu of bullet games (and watching lots of youtube chess) and i got nervous that it would hurt my long format rating when i finally got back to it but i played 3 games today and yesterday and won them all including beating the highest rated person i've ever beaten (a 1709). so close to breaking 1700 now in Blitz. why am i sharing this? first bc i'm now convinced that playing bullet really does help yr longer time format game, and second bc i'm also now convinced that watching lots of chess makes you better even if you're not consistently every day playing 10m games (or longer). nb that i do intend to get back into longer games.

imo you are winning here but i don't have a solution (and i'm not sure i should give it to you if i came up with one). my advice is to get an advantageous position through zugzwang - right now the movements opponent can make are limited. you don't need forcing checkmate - just small improvements and force him to move into a bad position. i don't like Bf8 bc Qf7 gives him initiative and room to breath but maybe look at Bf6? Qg1+ is a resource to use at the right time too i think.

I've been trying to learn how to play the sicilian. its so hard to remember all those moves - and then people do the wrong moves and you cant remember how to punish them. but still. you do get some fun games.
― cajunsunday, Sunday, 12 April 2020 21:32 (four years ago) link
i play da siciliano feel like rather than try to remember all the moves just pick a line u like and play it a bunch and youll get the hang of it, i recently compared what id been doing to theory and it pretty much made sense tho it wasnt the primary line for the variation i was playing but it was a known playable one

― lag∞n, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:06 (four years ago) link
there's a video where he takes bartholomew's end games you must know test and he says he never explicitly studied them and claims endgame is sorta a weakness for him iirc but then dominates the test either by knowing all the endgames or more bc he's able to somehow calculate a bunch of them on the fly and comes up with some solutions that aren't the given ones by the bartholomew program it's a cool thing to watch tbh
― Mordy, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:09 (four years ago) link
yeah i watched that its pretty nuts bartholomews all do you know the blhdy blah formulation and magnus is all no whats that and bartholomew starts to explain it and magnus is like yeah thats just obvious

― lag∞n, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:16 (four years ago) link
i don't mind either way what the thread is called.
i should work more on my endgames. the cool thing about being great at endgames is that a) at my level i've noticed a lot of ppl aren't great at them so it'll give me a huge leg up and b) a critical strategy when going up a piece or a few pawns is knowing how to crush the endgame with that advantage but if you don't really know it v well it's too easy to still make stupid blunders even in totally winnable end games.
― Mordy, Sunday, 3 May 2020 15:23 (four years ago) link
I don't mind the thread title, and recognize it as a nod to the Yes thread, but I'm not married to it.

think i leveled up (KNOCK ON WOOD) my rating is up 50+pts for the last week, feels a lil more stable/prolonged than just being on a heater, i somehow just started playing/seeing more dynamic positions, which is interesting cause it seems to come with more variance in winning/losing games with wider margins, also seems like players at my level arent necessarily comfortable playing those types of positions, im seeing people time out and make blunders

gotta be willing to lose, competition is interesting finding the right balance between caring enough about winning and not caring so much that you cant brush yrself off and try again --the sports psychologist
― lag∞n, Monday, 4 January 2021 15:52 (three years ago) link
one thing that imo can make losing at chess more fun is if youre down material and have no positional advantage, a lost game more or less, just do some super aggressive shit sacrifice a piece launch a pawn storm etc, sometimes youll get a cool win but mostly its just good practice for attacking seeing lines and so forth
― lag∞n, Monday, 4 January 2021 15:56 (three years ago) link
its funny with chess being matched to similarly skilled players no matter how much you improve youre still gonna lose half the time
― lag∞n, Monday, 4 January 2021 15:57 (three years ago) link
yeah it's all about being more **zen**, i've never played sports and all my other hobbies are non competitive so i wonder if i just haven't had enough practice at that. also the gamification (when playing through an app) doesn't help, each loss doesn't stand on its own but chips away at your precious rating.
just do some super aggressive shit sacrifice a piece launch a pawn storm etc
will try that if i ever go back.
― ledge, Monday, 4 January 2021 16:03 (three years ago) link
the thing about the rating tho is you can always get those points back, i feel like fwiw i only play at my best or near my best like 20% of the time, and its very streaky, so ill play pretty mediocre or bad 50-100 points below where id be playing good for like a month and then have a short run of good play, and sometimes those runs coincide with a general over all improvement, but often not, feel like you have to enjoy chess and be interested in it not just be totally consumed by the winning and losing otherwise its kinda not that fun
like watch this sick ass game, chess is cool, dubov os cool
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BgG4bUDHa4
― lag∞n, Monday, 4 January 2021 16:10 (three years ago) link
btw its kinda funny that after that somnolent carlsen caruana championship the entire chess world went from considering analyzing speed games being the dumbest thing in the world to it being actually good
― lag∞n, Monday, 4 January 2021 16:14 (three years ago) link
also seems like theres just more of it in top tournaments now which is cool as it allows someone with an attacking style like dubov to flourish rather than having to deal with an opponent making 10 perfect defending moves in a row in a classical game
― lag∞n, Monday, 4 January 2021 16:30 (three years ago) link

re: not fretting over every move
Slow chess and fast chess inform each other. Getting better at fast chess will improve your slow game, and getting better at slow chess will improve your fast game. Playing blitz games made me fret less, because it was easier for me to forgive a bad move knowing I was under time pressure. Also, knowing I can immediately queue up another game after a fuck up made me less invested in each individual game.
In all cases, I go back to the game analysis on lichess and use the "Learn From Your Mistakes" tool. Thinking of mistakes as learning opportunities, while cliche, has been useful.
― unashamed and trash (Unctious), Monday, 4 January 2021 16:52 (three years ago) link
i try to play longer games sometimes but im so habituated to blitz that i end up just playing at blitz speed lol not great
― lag∞n, Monday, 4 January 2021 17:12 (three years ago) link
yeah I had that trouble for a bit too--restraint and slowing down is something to practice, though. slow chess is for practicing thinking about longer lines.
― unashamed and trash (Unctious), Monday, 4 January 2021 17:15 (three years ago) link
the opening explorer/tablebase tool is good for analysis too, particularly if youre having trouble with a particular opening position, cool to see what other people have done an learn that youre playing the 20th most popular move and it always loses lol

― Allen (etaeoe), Monday, 19 September 2022 23:15 (two years ago) link
getting caught cheating online doesnt seem to be that big of a deal in the chess world for whatever reason, theres other players whove cheated online but still get invited to live tourneys, tho i dont think theres anyone at the absolute top level, part of it i think is theres no formal admin relationship between the sites and fide
― lag∞n, Monday, 19 September 2022 23:24 (two years ago) link
another thing that complicates it is those cheating instances were when he was a child
― lag∞n, Monday, 19 September 2022 23:27 (two years ago) link
COVID changed everything because tournaments went online. He wasn’t cheating in marches to boost his Elo, he was cheating in tournaments and accepting cash prizes. This also wasn’t when he was much younger. The last incident happened at the beginning of COVID.
― Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 20 September 2022 01:10 (two years ago) link
yeah he was 16 at the beginning of covid, and fwiw hes been rolling since tourneys have gone live again, so if hes not cheating over the board then hes prob not cheating online either hes just that good

I like to imagine Magnus is just salty as can be and is claiming foul to protect his ego. I say this in admiration to Magnus because Lord knows I would do the same in his position.
Seriously tho, Kinda messed up to let cheaters in. Don't care if it was when you were a kid or whatever. Bans need to be made public and enforced. Magnus is able to do what he is doing (and imo is justified) because FIDE and Chess.com are giving too much leeway and not being transparent with their response to cheating (speaking of the past). Hope this fixes things and we get some public stoning's in the future.no formal relationship between sites/FIDE really does mess with this. Team Magnus lets gooooooooooo

its kina unclear to me exactly what happened cause they did have very strong evidence towards him being a chronic online cheater and he even admitted to doing it a few times but then chess dot com went and let him back on to the site, the evidence for live cheating was not nearly as strong and he was never banned from live play, he sued magnus et al for defaming him which seemed pretty lame and now magnus agreed to play him again, seems like all sides were just ready to move on which is understandable, but chess.com letting him back on after making such a strong public case that he was a big time cheater is pretty weak imho

I'm astonished to learn that over 99% of games played on chess.com are speed games - even given you could fit in 100 or more in the time it takes to play a single one or three day limit game.
― behold the thump (ledge), Saturday, 7 October 2023 14:44 (one year ago) link
i dont play on chess dot com but just doing a lil googling and they categorize all of their default time controls except "daily" which is kind of a correspondence game i guess as speed so it kinda stands to reason
Speed Chess Time ControlsSpeed chess is subdivided into rapid, blitz, and bullet time controls:
Rapid time controls on Chess.com are any time control longer than 10 minutes per player. The most popular rapid time controls on Chess.com are 30|0 and 15|10

― lag∞n, Saturday, 7 October 2023 14:53 (one year ago) link
if they count 10/0 as blitz and not rapid then i bet 99% of games are blitz/bullet
― ciderpress, Saturday, 7 October 2023 15:04 (one year ago) link
this article says 10 minute games are the most popular on there which is kinda surprising since rapid is usually considered the most annoying time control but i could see it having appeal to less experienced players who want to take a lil more time, on lichess the player pools def get more skilled as you move down in time, tho ive never played correspondence so idk whats up with that
https://www.chess.com/article/view/interesting-chess-data-time-controls-and-game-results
then this post points out that when you measure it by time spent playing 10 minute games are way ahead
https://www.chess.com/forum/view/livechess/most-popular-time-controls-weighted-correctlyhttps://www.chess.com/forum/view/livechess/most-popular-time-controls-weighted-correctly
increments really not popular, ive wondered if theres a difference in quality of play between the incremented and non incremented games cause on lichess at least your rating is just by larger category bullet blitz rapid, i always play increments its nice to have a lil movin around time

I think it’s a justified sentiment, and Magnus has the clout to actually make a change in this regard. Yeah the rhetoric feels a little “wah wah I lost that isn’t supposed to happen”, but I don’t think anyone can argue with the substance of the post. That Hikaru/Dubbo video shows how easy it is to cheat, and with the stakes of chess at this level, to allow people to wear things in Chess that could easily be compromised and where there’s really no downside to banning these items? Feels a bit silly.

rook takes queen, then knight to f7 checkmate (king smothered by rook and pawns, hence the name)
Very nice! Yesterday I reached a draw by insufficient material as I let my opponent promote his last pawn to a knight, forking my queen and king. If he promoted to queen it was mate in 1. Safe to say, I'm not having a good run right now

i have done puzzles here and there but never really with any focus, and still im not focusing that hard, but i saw a video by this guy who was saying just doing a bunch of random puzzles even if theyre loosely grouped as like forks or whatever isnt that effective for training your pattern recognition, he was into studying more specific patterns together and repeatedly, he made this chessable course that has ~600 puzzles grouped by type which i bought and have just been working my way through repeatedly, he wants you to do them until you know them so well that you can basically solve them instantly, im not nearly there yet except for the easy ones but def in a few games ive recognized patterns that ive drilled and i feel like maybe im just thinking more tactically generally, i have leveled up since i started doing the puzzles tho its something that mightve happened anyway, its within my general trend

I tried lic for a minute but there were too many options I guess. I couldn’t get with it. Started a couple games by accident and left them hanging

dings been so bad has talked about how hes in a tough spot mentally hard to see him winning
― lag∞n, Saturday, 23 November 2024 23:38 (one month ago) link
gukesh has on the other hand been on an absolute tear
Yeah, would love to see an upset just for the entertainment factor. I do believe in the unquantifiable power or Rapport and think he could be the factor Ding needs to make this a real sparring match....

Who do we watch for match analysis? I'm still stuck on agadmators charm but looking to maybe shake it up a bit.

ding so frustrating. finding good positions then converting his advantages into draws
― secretary of state for fractal pluripotencies (||||||||), Sunday, 1 December 2024 12:37 (four weeks ago) link
Both these players kind of frustrating. World #5 duking it out with the world #22 and so far giving us battles with little romance.

Sorry to be a hater. Who knows, this endgame could still lead to something exciting, however unlikely
