If you're into that:

Sideways star Thomas Haden Church is to play Spider-Man's arch-enemy in the next instalment of the film series, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Church, who was Oscar-nominated for his role in Alexander Payne's comedy, will co-star with Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, stars of the previous two films.

Spider-Man 3 is due for release in May 2007, but its makers are keeping secret the identity of the latest villain.

...

Director Sam Raimi said that Church would be "a fantastic and challenging new nemesis" in the latest part of the Spider-Man franchise.

Be on the lookout for new supervillian WINEMAN! He hurls empty bottles with a single bound.

He's either The Vulture or Sandman with an outside chance of being Kraven the Hunter.

They should have gotten Paul Giamatti to be The Beetle.

n the 2002 film Spider-Man, it is mentioned that a Daily Bugle photographer named "Eddie" hasn't been able to get a good photo of Spider-Man. Presumably this is Eddie Brock, and in the novelization of the film Eddie actually has a cameo and is mentioned by his full name, with J. Jonah Jameson unwittingly making an ironic allusion to Venom by screaming "Next time, get a decent suit!". Brock was set to be played by R.C. Everbeck and a cameo role was filmed, but was cut during production.

In various interviews with the actors of the upcoming 2007 film Spider-Man 3 - such as Thomas Hayden Church - Venom's name has repeatedly been included as one of the movie's villains. While this has yet to be officially announced by Sony, it is widely speculated that he will be played by confirmed cast member Topher Grace. This is in spite of the fact that Sam Raimi has previously expressed a dislike of Venom, going so far as to say that he would not appear in a movie that Raimi would direct. Promotional images later confirmed the presence of the black costume in the film, and the teaser trailer shows the costume to be a living, liquid creature which Peter attempts to dispell within a belltower, just as in the comics. Whether or not the costume is an alien being remains to be seen.

The suit story didn't originally include Venom, did it? The suit just tried to form a symbiosis with Peter (I don't think it was even evil), he got rid of it, and it found the other guy to host it years later. I think the film would have too much going on if it would feature the suit, Sandman, the new Green Goblin and Venom. Hopefully Venom'll wait until episode 4.

http://www.superherostuff.com/Biographies/SpideyBio.html

The Alien Costume
[In the Secret-Wars] Spider-Man found himself on a satellite in a galexy far from Earth. Along with other super heroes, such as Captain America, and super villains, including Dr. Doom, Spidey was brought to the satellite by a near-omnipotent being called the Beyonder. The Beyonder wanted heroes and villains to fight a war on a planet called Battleworld. [There] Spider-Man fought many battles and his costume was left in tatters then he found a machine that could replace ruined clothing. SPider-Man triggered the clothing machine and a round black object sprang from it. It immediately started to spread up Spidey's arm, and didn't stop until it covered his entire body.

After defeating the villains and escaping the Beyonder, the heroes returned to Earth, and Spider-Man took his alien costume with him. The alien costume always seemed to know what Peter wanted, sometimes even before he did. He learned that his new supersuit was capable of generating a seemingly endless supply of webbing, and that it could also change its appearance at will. Peter and his alien costume were always in some kind of psychic contact, even when physically seperated. If the costume was in a different room, it came [slithered] at Peter's summons. [However] each night while Peter slept, the alien costume secretly slipped over him and took the unconscious Spider-Man wall-crawling at night. The web-swinger awoke each morning with no memory of his nocturnal adventures. All he knew was that he felt more exhausted before he had gone to bed.

As Peter's fatigue continued to grow he slept through the entire day and began to have terrible nightmares. So Spider-Man went to Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four) for help. After an exhaustive series of tests, Mr. Fantastic made a startling pronouncement. Instead of an amazing suit made of some unknown extraterrestrial fabric, Spidey's new costume was actually a living creature. It was a sentient symbiote who had formed a mental and physical bond with the Web-Slinger.

As soon as the symbiote's secret was revealed, it attempted to permanently graft itself to SPider-Man's body. Spider-Man did all he could to escape from the costume, but the symbiote tightened its grip on him, almost crushing Spidey in the process. Luckily ,Reed Richards had discovered that the symbiote was vulnerable to certain sound frequencies. Using theses sound waves, Richards managed to seperate Spidey from the costume. At last our hero was free and the alien was imprisoned.

Later, [during a power failure] the symbiote escaped from the laboratory and pounced on the unsuspecting Spider-Man. In desperation, SPider-Man lured the alien to the bell tower of Our Lady of Saints Church. He knew that the sound of the bells could free him from the symbiote. The alien, knowing that only one of them could survive the ordeal, sacrificed itself to save Peter. [Rid of the old costume Spider-Man went back to his old look.] The Black Cat, however, thought the black costume was sexier [so] she made a cloth version of it as a gift for Spidey. He used both costumes for many months and didn't get rid of his black one until Venom entered his life.

Was spidey supposed to be at NYU or columbia?

Machibuse '80 (ex machina), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

Topher Grace will be playing Eddie Brock, though sources say that he may also make an appearance as Spider-Man's fearsome villain and arch-rival, Venom. Several images of him wielding a camera and his brief appearance in the teaser trailer also support this. This is furthered by the fact that several interviews with cast members have confirmed the presence of Venom in the film; however, whether or not this refers to Brock's alternate identity, or simply to the symbiote costume with which he merges is unclear (referring to the symbiote itself as "Venom" is a common mistake -- because of this there are dinosaurs), leading to speculation over whether or not Brock will actually become Venom in this film.

Machibuse '80 (ex machina), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

I want to say Columbia.

Has anybody noticed what might be Green Goblin II in the trailer? The costume makes me sad. Of course, I think I am the only person alive who actually liked Green Goblin I's Power Rangers monster plastic battlesuit.

I am desperately clinging to might hope that Harry will be the evil mastermind behind the symbiote.

I assumed it was NYU since his apartment is right above the Shakespeare book store (which is 1.5 blocks from my office -- working on the park = best ever).

Also the pizza place he works at is at Bleeker and 6th ave I think?

But http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_State_University sez that he goes to Columbia in the movie wtf?

Machibuse '80 (ex machina), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

That's 'cause Columbia is MORE APPROPRIATE FOR SMARTIES j/k.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

Jon, he's clearly attending classes on the Columbia campus. Why he lives way the hell downtown instead of in student housing, I'm not really sure but he's definitely at Columbia. There's a shot of the Alma Mater statue in Spidey 2!

However, the building he is shown outside of post-class talking to his instructor is NOT the building where the actual classroom is located which is totally WTF for me. They don't even HAVE science and engineering classes in the building he's standing outside of, it's all foreign language and liberal arts. Hence why all of my classes were in that building and I know for certain the classroom depicted is way the hell on the opposite side of campus.

I do think by-and-large the superhero films all suffer from the crudest of "let's cash-in on this trend" sensibilities. As a child I longed to see comic books translated to the big screen and couldn't understand why it was so rarely done, but now that the market is flooded with the material its just kinda... gross: Elektra, Catwoman, Daredevil, Hellboy, the Hulk, those last couple pre-Nolan Batman movies, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Fantastic Four, V for Vendetta, X-Men 3, Ghost Rider...

I hate it when an article takes a premise I could want to get behind and then fucks it up.

Superman and From Hell come immediately to mind -- but there simply isn't anything to match the artistry of films like On the Waterfront, The Godfather and Five Easy Pieces.

From Hell is easily in the running for worst recent comic book adaptation, certainly in the bottom five with catwoman, daredevil, superman returns and league of extraordinary gentlemen. Haven't seen Spawn.

Comic book movies can make for extraordinarily execrable examples of the craft, but they can also be pretty fucking awesome, and yes, this is the kind of argument everybody >22y.o. ought to know better than.

TOMBOT, Friday, 4 May 2007 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

IF YOU DISLIKE COMIC BOOK MOVIES AS A CONCEPT TO START WITH, STOP WATCHING THEM, READING ABOUT THEM, AND POSTING ABOUT THEM UNLESS YOU ARE PAID TO DO SO.

THIS IS V SIMPLE.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Friday, 4 May 2007 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

Because comic books are essentially glorified storyboards (lotsa pictures, little dialogue), they're ridiculously easy to visualize as motion pictures.

Has this man even watched a Hitchcock movie?

Eric H., Friday, 4 May 2007 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

God, every bullet point in this article doesn't work.

Does anyone actually think the best portrayal of Batman can yield the same depth of character and resonance as Jack Nicholson's Bobby Dupea? If you believe this, turn in your B.A. in Film Studies. Now.

As already alluded to above, most people on the opposing side of his arguement are all "fuck a film studies!"

Eric H., Friday, 4 May 2007 17:55 (nineteen years ago)

If Paddy Chayefsky were alive today, he'd probably be forced to adapt Ironman for the movies instead of writing Network.

Or writing irascible, curmudgeonly articles like this one.

OMG COMIC BOOK FILMS ARE NOT LIKE THE GODFATHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will critics ever stop pining for that ten-year Hollywood Golden Age?

But the thing is, The Godfather is largely episodic, with the second in the series even having flashbacks to a parallel storyline that runs in the past. It even has points within the movie where everything is set up, only to have more rising action to pay off in a climactic scene that was foreshadowed. In other words, it's written very much like an episodic comic story.

Eric H., Friday, 4 May 2007 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

I like a lot of things about network but it really is kind of like watching one of those 72 Monologues For Young Actors books from Theater II class adapted for the screen

TOMBOT, Friday, 4 May 2007 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

well, that's what happens when you start by writing live TV plays. Rod Serling's movies, tho I like a couple of em, are almost as windy and lecturey as Chayefsky's.

Some scholars think Hamlet could be as old as 40.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 4 May 2007 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

Heh, Network is littered with comic book characters/situations, e.g. Sybil the Soothsayer, the Mao Zedong Hour.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 4 May 2007 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

Some scholars think Hamlet could be as old as 40.

I'd like to know how old those scholars are.

Eric H., Friday, 4 May 2007 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

(spare me the "no one under XX-years-old can be a scholar" bit.)

Eric H., Friday, 4 May 2007 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

easy, Glowstickman!

In has been said by many that in the first four acts of the play Hamlet seems to be a young man, a student, and that his acquaintances are also students and youthful associates but that in Act V the impression, based on the remarks of the grave-digger Clown, is that Hamlet is 30 years old. It has been suggested that it may have suited Shakespeare's dramatic purposes to make Hamlet 30, or perhaps he forgot or simply did not care.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 4 May 2007 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

A big problem I have with that article is the "Michael Chabon now being forced to write comic book adaptations" bit, because that's what writers have to do. He seems to have completely missed the Adventures of Kavalier and Klay, as Chabon demonstrates an obvious love for the comic book form and the impact it can have on someone.

Instead of bitching, why not celebrate the fact that critically accepted and decent writers are working on these projects to make them better? I think Spider-man 2 is fantastic, and quite an achievement. If he feels differently, that's fine, but don't try to make out that he worked on it as some sort of portent for the end of all films.

I really wish they had brought him back for 3, though. God it really needed him. And an editor. And, and I hate to say this, the Sam Raimi that directed 2. And Alfred Molina. And a lot of things, really.

Gukbe, Friday, 4 May 2007 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder if Chabon wants K&K to be a film, tho.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 4 May 2007 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

xpost-And the Escapist comic books... and the McSweeneys adventure tales book with Howard Chaykin illustrations etc etc etc. Chabon obviously loves comics and probably enjoyed more then the paycheck from Spiderman 2, which was an awesome movie.

dan selzer, Friday, 4 May 2007 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

I hope not. He should leave it. Though it is the only novel of his I've ever read, and I quite enjoyed the film adaptation of Wonder Boys, so maybe it could be good. maybe. probably not.

xpost

Gukbe, Friday, 4 May 2007 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

writing off entire mediums without engaging in their more challenging aspects always = DUDDIEST THING IN THE FUCKING WORLD

From Hell is an awful film. (although to be fair if anyone's gonna complain about the words-to-images ratio in comics they certainly have never read From Hell itself, which is LOADED to the gills with a lot of complex writing/dialogue)

Shakey Mo Collier, Saturday, 5 May 2007 00:41 (nineteen years ago)

(or Cerebus - large chunks of which are composed of nothing but text and maybe one image per page)

Shakey Mo Collier, Saturday, 5 May 2007 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

From Hell obviously not for adolescents either - no one without a serious interest in history and literature (and mythology) would be able to understand it at all.

Shakey Mo Collier, Saturday, 5 May 2007 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

lol the godfather is possibly the worst possible example dude could have chosen, it's based on a totally trashy pop novel of much less literary worth than your average spider-man comic

s1ocki, Saturday, 5 May 2007 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe that I went to a midnight showing of this and got only 3.5 hours of sleep because of it. So disappointing and so not worth it, sadly.

ENBB, Saturday, 5 May 2007 00:51 (nineteen years ago)

the bit that makes me shake my head most is this:

works whose protagonists speak in dialogue balloons...Not only isn't it Shakespeare, it's not even Stephen King.

How is reading a Shakespeare play different from reading a work where the characters speak in dialogue balloons?!

aaron d.g., Saturday, 5 May 2007 01:00 (nineteen years ago)

I took my last exam EVER this morning, on 1 and a half hours of sleep, went into town to watch it despite the fact that I had plans for the evening, and wound up just being too bloody tired to do anything to celebrate the end of university.

Totally not worth it. But Venom was kind of cool. But NO TONGUE!!! WTF?

Gukbe, Saturday, 5 May 2007 01:01 (nineteen years ago)

Just as good as (or no worse than) Spidey 1 and 2. Took my 12 year old, and the theatre was shockingly empty, but this was worth it, and if a 12-year-old agrees then we really ought to listen as they're a combination of the least corrupted and most clued up demographic of all. Why don't we seem to want to acknowledge that this -- the source material, everything propping up the films, etc -- is a melodrama? An improbable soap in which everyone knows the same small circle of people in a city of, what, 8-12 million (which is fine, btw)? And that the cheesiness is as intrinsic to the story as the spider DNA (or radioactivity) is to Peter's makeup. Fuck, Stan Lee's cameo said it all. The more I think about it, the more I like it.

Although, I agree, where the FUCK was Venom's TONGUE?

Lostandfound, Saturday, 5 May 2007 05:01 (nineteen years ago)

i really shouldn't be reading all this before i go see it tomorrow

latebloomer, Saturday, 5 May 2007 05:18 (nineteen years ago)

Man, I was disappointed. I didn't hold out hope, but once I found out Venom, played by Topher Grace (he's pretty good...his self-parody in Ocean's 12 was hilarious), I was at least looking forward to his role.

Too little screen time for him.

Movie Sandman = wtf.

B.L.A.M., Saturday, 5 May 2007 06:05 (nineteen years ago)

I agree with Lostandfound re: melodrama. Saw this yesterday and loved it because of, not despite, melodrama. Altho sometimes the tone slighly wrong - the Bad PP Dancing just reminded me of a deodorant ad.

Zoe Espera, Saturday, 5 May 2007 06:56 (nineteen years ago)

man, the reaction to this flick has been more mixed than (insert crappy joke related to fruit/nuts/blenders/miscegenation/etc. here).

this is X3 all over again, innit? but then again i didn't really mind that one.

latebloomer, Saturday, 5 May 2007 07:28 (nineteen years ago)

will report back later once i've actually seen it.

latebloomer, Saturday, 5 May 2007 07:29 (nineteen years ago)

is Topher Grace nude at any point?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 5 May 2007 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

The PP dancing thing was so wrong it was hard to watch. Also, EMO HAIR!

ENBB, Saturday, 5 May 2007 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

from VV review: "...soon to transform the mild-mannered Forest Hills dork into a monochromatic hipster sporting asymmetrical bangs, black eyeliner, and calf-hugging trousers. Our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has become... MisShaped!"

A Pulp reference? How odd.

kenan, Saturday, 5 May 2007 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

definitely better than x3

s1ocki, Saturday, 5 May 2007 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

definitely! X3 was shockingly dissapointing.

I kinda loved how they threw in the quick shot where he consciously styles his new emo hair in the mirror. somehow so much better that way instead of it just appearing in the next shot (a la surly 5 o'clock shadow superman III etc.).

Kim, Saturday, 5 May 2007 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

maybe it's because of lowered expectations from all the mixed buzz, but i liked this a lot (not as much as 2 though). a movie attempting to stuff so much into 2 1/2 hours is inevitably going to fall short in some areas but overall i thought it managed the juggling act respectably. i honestly didn't mind the corniness and the melodrama (i have to agree with Lostandfound, isn't that what these have always been about at heart?), and i even liked the "bad Peter" dancing and "yazz flute" homage. fanboys/nitpickers be damned.

latebloomer, Saturday, 5 May 2007 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

the emo hair WAS kinda lame though

latebloomer, Saturday, 5 May 2007 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

"oooh, spiderman 2 was a real delve into the psyche of FUCK OFF EAT MY ASS

pseudo-depth is the worst trend in movies in at least thirty years. i blame peter jackson. can't all these award winning directors and screenwriters just make a movie that's FUN.

darraghmac, Saturday, 5 May 2007 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

latebloomer, Saturday, 5 May 2007 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

latebloomer, Saturday, 5 May 2007 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

the last thing cinema needs right now is another franchise.

darraghmac, Saturday, 5 May 2007 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

no arguments from me on that point.

but when it comes to unnecessarily dour superhero flicks you might have a point with say, the Hulk or Superman Returns or Batman Begins (though i personally liked BB). but i would hardly call Spiderman 2 or Hellboy overly self-serious!

latebloomer, Saturday, 5 May 2007 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

spider-man 2's brilliance comes from the fact that it is one of the best examples of filmmaking in recent years. Wonderfully put together.

Batman Begins managed to be moody, fun, visually interesting, and whilst it is pseudo-depth, it at least acknowledges the issues of a costumed hero.

Gukbe, Saturday, 5 May 2007 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

i actually thought the hulk was better than most of the rest, didn't bother my arse with superman returns.

hellboy not overly serious, just really really awful.

and, just for instance, the scene where spidey is 'one of us' in either 1 or 2 induces puke. spiderman 2 is a good example of the worst type of effects driven rubbish summer seems to bring every year.

darraghmac, Saturday, 5 May 2007 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

the hulk infuriates me everytime i remember those retarded hulk-poodles

latebloomer, Saturday, 5 May 2007 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

is that a reference to fans, or the advertising people for the movie?

darraghmac, Saturday, 5 May 2007 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

hahahahaha

no, the dogs that nick nolte gives the hulk-serum or whatnot to and they mutate into these awful-looking cgi critters that hulk has a brief battle with or something. i just remember it looking so ridiculous, even for a hulk movie.

latebloomer, Saturday, 5 May 2007 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

and then there's that stupid extra hulk versus dad fight (OEDIPUS SMASH) that seems like it was added just because the ILM dudes were bored and had some extra money or something.

latebloomer, Saturday, 5 May 2007 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

OEDIPUS SMASH

nice.

kenan, Saturday, 5 May 2007 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

I thought the newest Spidermovie was about as good as the first, but not as good as the second. The biggest misstep is trying to cram three villains into it (by far the most successful of these three plots is the one with Goblin Jr.) Pick one, fellas. Or even two, if you absolutely have to, but all three of them got shortchanged becausee you just couldn't stop adding plots. The other really, REALLY weak segment is a longish part in the middle where we're supposed to see the insidious effect of the Venom symbiote on Parker's personality. Unfortunately, this takes the form of him listening to James Brown and disco-dancing in the street right after he buys an all-black outfit, then showing off at the jazz club Mary Jane has been working at after she dumps him. It's corny and dull and comes out of nowhere, and doesn't even make sense with the other machinations happening at that point in the movie. The Sandman plot is even more feeble (although less misbegotten) and hardly wraps up at all.

Thank goodness for some really well-done farcical shennanigans in a French restaurant and some really amazing action scenes, the best of which all involve James Franco using the Goblin gear like an extreme skateboarder, a major improvement from the way Willem Dafoe's version of the character was shown in action.

Oilyrags, Sunday, 6 May 2007 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

How does Evil Spidey compare with Evil Supes in Superman III. You've no idea how badly I was traumatized by watching Christopher Reeve flick peanuts at wine bottles.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 6 May 2007 00:10 (nineteen years ago)

Would fighting traffic signals made Spider-man 3 better? I have to wonder, now, as that is the only thing I think of when anybody mentions Superman III.

Gukbe, Sunday, 6 May 2007 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

Just d/led this & new Dr. Who ep. Cannot wait to watch even tho Spiderman 2 was so boring I couldn't finish it. I adored the first one, tho, what a fucking great movie.

This (especially the dancing-in-the-street part) was awesome.

David R., Sunday, 6 May 2007 03:04 (nineteen years ago)

Otherwise, Oily OTM.

David R., Sunday, 6 May 2007 03:05 (nineteen years ago)

See, while I admit that stuff was (somewhat) funny, as a window into the crueller, more self-serving side of Parker's soul it just failed utterly. The thoughtless domineering of the landlord's daughter was so much more interesting and believable. Sure, lots of assholes might take their new, hot date to a place where the girl who dumped them was working in food service just to rub her nose in it. That would be fine. But the musical/acrobatic number on top of it? Weeeeeeeeeeeeeak.

Oilyrags, Sunday, 6 May 2007 03:13 (nineteen years ago)

Haha I thought the dance sequences were great! The Flint Marko/Sandman/He really killed your dad nonsense OTOH was just nonsense.

Alex in SF, Sunday, 6 May 2007 03:24 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Topher Grace was s'okay and James Franco was funny (although they disfigured his pretty face!

Alex in SF, Sunday, 6 May 2007 03:27 (nineteen years ago)

And Bruce Campbell had the best cameo.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

Again with the cocaine.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, it was hilarious to catch spiderman yesterday after the day of blow on ilx, i gotta say.

i also loved their decision mid-way through the film to replace tobey maguire with the guy from the killers. ripping off the opening sequence to saturday night fever was odd yet inspired. srsly i am with every single person who is saying that the best part of the movie was the completely bizarre "peter parker, dancing dickweed of the lower east side" sequence in the middle of the film. also: WTF WITH THE EGG COOKING SCENE?? "do you like peppers?"

if i ever have to hear kirsten dunst sing again, though, i'm going to deafen myself with chopsticks.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

How many millions were spent on Topher Grace's hair?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

I MEAN, THEY GONGED THE VILLAIN?? THIS MOVIE WAS ON SOME NEXT LEVEL SHIT.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

in retrospect actually my favorite line might've just been topher grace shouting "what the hell" after coked-out black-suited my particle physics romance spiderman broke his camera.

I think Cheech & Chong's Next Movie probably makes more sense than this did. I haven't seen it in a while.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

i would watch that 100x but only if they overdub kirsten dunst. i mean christ i know the point was that mary jane is completely talentless but did they have to prove this over and over??

speaking of, i said last night that a big problem with the spiderman series is that mary jane and now gwen stacy are intolerably unhot, vapid bitches. which is pretty much par for the course with female roles in action films BUT why did they have to make bit part females 10000000000000000000000000000x hotter than their main females? fake parker posey in the newspaper office and russian girl are both so much cuter?? i have no sympathy for peter parker's predicament, he should just date one of the more awesome girls.

It was just something I thought of this morning as a better explanation for this movie's most batshit qualities might be instead of Raimi deciding at the 11th hour to just get baked and watch "Will It Blend?" on YouTube, he actually sat down and watched RHPS and realized yes, you can pack this much ridiculous shit into one movie, but the way to do it is with dancing and music.

The way 100 minutes of the entire film is all expository setup to justify the final convoluted 4-way reminded me of how I think Joe Dirt exists just because somebody had a dream where Chris Walken, an American Indian, a hot blonde, and David Spade wearing a blue dread wig are all in some kind of muscle car drag racing Kid Rock, and they felt the need to write a whole screenplay to explain how that would actually happen.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

David R., Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

I liked Bruce Campbell and the landlord's daughter, and I enjoyed the first 5 hours of the dancing dickweed sequence, but WTF with the rest of the movie?

The omlette scene might have been funny and the movie was probably clever and self-consciously satirical, but if Raimi was trying to be the Paul Verhoeven of teenage romance movies, then he did a much better job in 2 than he did in 3.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

Sure, I was really drunk and I nodded off a couple times during the final fight scene because I stopped drinking 15 hours earlier or however long that movie was, but "oh no, I'm going to jump back into the tuning fork circle with the freaky space-suit monster and get blowed up" wasn't even funny because my patience had already snapped.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

i still don't know why he didn't just inform the police that the way to defeat sandman, at least temporarily, was by hosing him down.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

ALSO (guys i have so many questions about this movie) why the hell did spiderman have to ride goblin's oversized scooter down to rescue mary jane? was it just so we could have a scene of franco and maguire humping each other on a skateboard? because it would've been more efficient if, i dunno, SPIDEY USED HIS WEB SHOT POWER LIKE USUAL instead?

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

ALSO AGAIN topher grace's venom makeup was one of the funniest things in the world, second only to tobey maguire's my chemical romance makeup.

I totally misread the omelette scene, I was waiting for him to slip on the egg, bash his bonce on the rather nice wooden table and hey presto, nasty evil Harry is back.

Re: the dancing sequence:

Did no one else notice how it kept flipping back and forth between the way Peter thought women were reacting to him (*swoon*) and the way they were REALLY reacting to him ("Who is this nerdy dancing cunt? lol")?

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

yes, that was completely, completely bizarre. i have to say i like cokehead peter parker a lot more than regular peter parker, though.

also i just found this on imdb:
it is george bush's fault that the american flag was in the film

i hate him! when spiderman stood in front of the flag for a couple of seconds i got real angry because i couldnt handle seeing it in the movie. my life was ruined. and somehow i know george bush made the flag appear in the film, because sam raimi is a republican so i know he, bush, the evil oil companies and the evil corporations (who just sit in their big corporate offices being all.......corporationany) all conspired with each other to make that scene happen. GRRRR, if i saw bush i would punch him! and btw, if anyone here claims to hate bush more than i do, then i dare you to say that to my face because i hate bush the MOST. no one hates him more than i do. no one. i wish you would tell me to my face that you hate him more than i do because i would punch you for trying to think you hate him more than i do. im the biggest liberal ever and also the best liberal ever.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

Wow.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

im the biggest liberal ever and also the best liberal ever.

WHY CAN'T WE EASILY CHANGE SCREEN NAMES HERE

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

the real question is: is Tina Fey a republican?

kenan, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

I totally misread the omelette scene, I was waiting for him to slip on the egg, bash his bonce on the rather nice wooden table and hey presto, nasty evil Harry is back.

Don't think for one minute that that omelet wasn't prepared with malicious intent.

I hope that imdb comment was written by Raimi. xpost

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

yeah that's the question i really asked myself especially in relation to spiderman 3.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

It's beyond credulity. That has to be a joke.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

Re: the dancing sequence:

Yeah, I thought that was the best part of the movie.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

Also I'd like to thank whomever gave Bryce Dallas Howard a burger in preparation for this movie since she didn't look like a gaunt Gelfling about the face like she usually does.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

isn't she pregnant? not that i have any idea when they actually filmed all of the people scenes.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

Really? Didn't know that!

lol celebrities be spawnin'

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah BDH was pregnant during the filming, she had no idea until after they finished all the crane-disaster rescue crap though, ha ha.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, no one noticed that she suddenly had cheeks?

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

hey man girls can eat five guys too
like tobey is all gonna be "hey do you has a bun in the oven?" on the set

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

venom joe armstrong tobey would've called her on that shit.

ghost rider, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

"Bryce, wow! You look like a woman as opposed to the crazed lizard/scarecrow hybrid you usually resemble!"

"Aw, thanks! *giggle*"

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

what did they do to jessica alba, she looked like shit in that

She did! I wasn't really paying attention at that point and for a moment thought she was Elizabeth Berkley.

ENBB, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

YES, or the fish-eye woman from the remake of the wickerman.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

i think bdh looking less like a gelfling had a lot more to do with the 27 lbs of makeup especially in the eye/eyebrow area they slathered on her than whether or not she was 5 lbs heavier than normal tbh.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

lol tho still tobey had on more eye makeup.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

I wasn't really paying attention at that point and for a moment thought she was Elizabeth Berkley.

oh wow, harshes

SNAP: troo, Tobey looked like he fell out of a P!ATD video for half the movie

Emo Tobey + Miss Brant would make a hot lovely couple.

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

So, everyone in these movies who has actively killed someone else has died, right?

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

I try to imagine what might have happened had Raimi gone ahead and replaced Tobey with Jake Gyllenhaal . Would Jake have entered a leather bar as GAY PETER instead?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

well, no, considering that he'd still be playing peter parker and not alfred's fantasy gay jake. i don't think raimi would've altered the script to accomodate you, unfortunately.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

SPIDEY IS THE PEOPLE'S HERO

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

haha if venom made spidey gay that would've been a much better movie.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

Can you imagine Andrew Sullivan's angry posts though? RAIMI SEZ GAYDOM SPREAD BY EVIL BLACK GOO

Did you think it was a bomb and then call the police? Or do you not live in Boston?

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

No way. I immediately felt much safer actually.

iiiijjjj, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

liked the bit in the french restaurant and some of the early self-centredness

the strutting down the street and showing off in MJ's bar stuff was funny but didn't feel like the same film, in a way

superheroes and superhero stories often rely on coincidence (I don't mind it) but this had a bit too much, for me

some of the jokey bits were strung out too long (the bit w/ JJJ and the girl w/ the camera) and, eventually, some of the mugging and OTT action dialogue put me off, too

I like spider-man and I like sandman (he was sympatheticky but his flashback-anguish and redemption were weak) and it was exciting and looked good, for the most part (few bits that seemed more "unreal" or were a bit too "busy")

good fun but on too long, too many baddies, few disappointing thing and snow patrol at the end

oh, and w dafoe's butler finally telling j franco that spidey was innocent! good help is hard to find

RJG, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

the butler really should've told franco that ages ago, it would've saved the guy a LOT of troubles.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I was kind of like "WTF butler dude, way to wait until the last minute to be of any use! Also where were you in the previous movies?"

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

Franco's revenge plot was kind of a perfect storm of douchey genius though. "BOOM I FUCKED YR GIRLFRIEND, HAW HAWS!"

HI DERE, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

franco's plan:

a) force kirsten dunst to break up with spiderman
b) tell spiderman he fucked kirsten dunst
c) make self a martini
d) wait for spiderman to appear on his balcony
e) ...get his ass kicked????

srsly willem dafoe should've popped back up in the mirror to mention, like, setting a trap for spiderman, or something?

ghost rider, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

The whole Butler thing was really bad. It just seemed so . . . lazy.

ENBB, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

i just don't think he thought any of it out beyond the "it's funny to watch peter crying on a bridge while holding flowers lol" stage.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

james franco 8080

ghost rider, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

b) tell spiderman he fucked kirsten dunst

ALSO the thing about this is that didn't harry and mary jane date each other in the first movie? i mean, really, this is old news.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

wait that would've been hilarious if he was all like LOL you guys broke up over this and i was just talking about like what happened three years ago PSYYYYYYCHE

truly that would've been the best diabolical plan ever.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

(haha "obv")

HI DERE, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

I can see exactly where this Chappelle skit is going with the omelet scene. "Do you like hot peppers?"

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

"How'd your hair get so red, anyway?"

Yeah, I thought that was the best part of the movie.

There were people in the theatre with me who were obviously SQUIRMING at cheesy jazz PP... and I'm thinking, jesus people, he's SUPPOSED to look like a douche.

Roz, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

even a cursory reading of Foucault should have told us that

HI DERE, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

This has had generally bad reviews in the UK. I didn't really understand why, or at least, looking back, I can't understand why there was so much gushing over Spider-Man 2 compared with this.

Yes, it was too long, sagged in the midddle, and things like the butler revelation were lazy, but it was so likable. Maybe I've just been watching 24 too much, but to have some kind of optimistically liberal, New Testament Christian superhero morality tale was quite refreshing, even if Sandman's whole motivation was a bit all over the place.

Neither Tobey Maguire or Kirsten Dunst seem to be able to do crying very well, and the series never manages really get emotional depth out of their darker times.

i just really appreciated the fact that sam raimi decided to make the venom story just a really weird, convoluted cocaine metaphor.

After I saw it, I tentatively mentioned this to my cinemagoing companion, apologising if it was a really obvious thing that everyone had been saying, but umm.. yeah. I totally read it that way and I'd be surprised (but sort of pleased, in some kind of life having a deeper pattern behind it kind of way) if it wasn't intentional.

Did no one else notice how it kept flipping back and forth between the way Peter thought women were reacting to him (*swoon*) and the way they were REALLY reacting to him ("Who is this nerdy dancing cunt? lol")?

I certainly noticed the mixed response, but I put it down to different people having different reactions to coke-esque confidence, but yeah, you're probably right in your reading.

Alba, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

I saw it more like...the ones that were reacting badly to him were just too far away to get a whiff of his spidey pheromones!

RJG, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

An interesting take!

Alba, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

BTWFWIW, for my money Tobey + EVIL floppy hair = hotter, but then I fancy annoying coked-up girls.

whaddaprick. is this because ILM didn't do the effects?

latebloomer, Thursday, 10 May 2007 07:09 (nineteen years ago)

heh never mind, now i see why:

"Lucas, who was behind the smash-hit Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, said he was not impressed by the new sequel, which surged ahead of the director's 2005 film Revenge of the Sith to take the record for the biggest weekend box-office record."

latebloomer, Thursday, 10 May 2007 07:12 (nineteen years ago)

talk about the nerd pot calling the nerd kettle black!

latebloomer, Thursday, 10 May 2007 07:25 (nineteen years ago)

Sith did not have musical jazz interludes. This is why it sucked.

Roz, Thursday, 10 May 2007 07:33 (nineteen years ago)

Plus, the scene where we first see Sandman >>>>>>> anything in the Star Wars prequels OR any of the Spidey movies.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Monday, 14 May 2007 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

everyone in the theater laughed at the crying on the bridge scene.

Fetchboy, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 06:06 (nineteen years ago)

three months pass...

I just watched this and I really liked it, but after reading this thread I can't remember why at all. Maybe it was cause I saw it right after the new Fantastic Four and it seemed so much better in comparison. Also it was great to see Toby Maguire channeling Jim Carrey. Somehow I think Karl Jung would just eat this movie up.

http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/6446/howdoishotwebvj0.jpg

I had this in mind the whole time I was reading the thread too. FUCK YOU INTERNET.
