BOATPEOPLEHATEFUCK (ex machina), Monday, 28 March 2005 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i never understood the point of del.icio.us -- why does a) one need to share their bookmarks and b) tag them? if you wanted to share a link, wouldnt you blog it, anyway?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 28 March 2005 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

from what i hear, they've got a well-exposed api, so people can build applications & what not around it. much easier to extract and use on your pc or anywhere else than searching yr blog.

andrew s (andrew s), Monday, 28 March 2005 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

as for "need" though, it's always kind of dirty to throw that word into conversations about an internet

andrew s (andrew s), Monday, 28 March 2005 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

jon yr bookmarks just cracked me the hell up.

if i had this thing, i'd just create a bunch of links to bestiality instead of what is actually on my bookmarks, so that everyone who googles me will find that.

i can move move move any mountain (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 1 August 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

my favorite plug-in is the one that lets you "post page to del.ici.ous" by right-clicking and it fills in the title and description of the page for you.

i can move move move any mountain (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 1 August 2005 05:35 (twenty years ago)

That's a bookmarklet! Not a tag! :D

i can move move move any mountain (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 1 August 2005 07:02 (twenty years ago)

err i mean "plugin" instead of "tag"...

I shouldn't be doing resumés like this :D

But actually, I think you are thinking of a plugin that does that. But that plugin is SILLY! There is a bookmarklet that does THE SAME THING!!!

javascript:location.href='http://del.icio.us/new/WIZARDISHUNGRY?v=2&url='+encodeURIComponent(location.href)+'&title='+encodeURIComponent(document.title)

That is the code for the bookmarklet... except with your username in there instead....

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Monday, 1 August 2005 07:15 (twenty years ago)

i like yours jbr.

i don't think i like the thing that makes tags for you, it gives you too many tags. i think i have enough already and tag making isn't that hard. i just use the "remember this" thing on my toolbar, very easy.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 1 August 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

this is what i've been using. it doesn't auto-generate tags, but it does fill in the url/description fields based on the page's heading info.

Ballsiest move - phasing out that ridiculous URL.

Nhex, Friday, 1 August 2008 08:10 (seventeen years ago)

i liked it. most urls are so booooring, so many sites can't even configure their webservers to work without the www. wonder if generic top level domains will shake things up - i doubt it.

ledge, Friday, 1 August 2008 10:40 (seventeen years ago)

The visual redesign is fine. It's not materially different. Main thing I'm noticing is the fact that you no longer have to wait ten seconds to get a response from the server every time you click a link.

Schachter was a real ass about the character limit in the early days. I'm glad it's been lifted.

caek, Sunday, 30 August 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

mh, Sunday, 30 August 2009 21:35 (sixteen years ago)

little bit snappier, appreciate the concept of a "to read" thing built in, bulk editing/starring is slicker. no inbox (which i never used). social features deemphasized. nothing to do with yahoo, which is slightly more reassuring from a data security P.O.V. the guy who wrote it is a good dude.

i think that's how they are still charging for accounts. i got in on the ground floor before that started.

Instapaper for words, zootool for stuff and things.

Will most miss all the public tags. Searching them was a great way to find stuff, and hardly any spam or scam or shops.

stet, Friday, 17 December 2010 10:18 (fifteen years ago)

delicious has been on the way out for a couple of years. i was a pinboard alpha user. didn't pay for my account and have been testing the archive feature (take's a copy of the page incase it disappears) since it started. very pleased with it. much faster. smaller community but more responsive developers. don't care about the community anyway.

caek, Friday, 17 December 2010 11:13 (fifteen years ago)

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Friday, 17 December 2010 12:03 (fifteen years ago)

in these exciting days of a gazillion free internet services, it is not quite that black and white.

caek, Friday, 17 December 2010 12:05 (fifteen years ago)

naturally! but what, you're suggesting every single internet service will become paid for, or die?

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Friday, 17 December 2010 12:09 (fifteen years ago)

yes! that's the natural end point.

assume any indie service that does not take your money has the intention of selling once it has sufficient momentum, and also assume it will one day be bought by a bigger company that doesn't understand what it's buying other than a user base.

caek, Friday, 17 December 2010 12:11 (fifteen years ago)

caek, Friday, 17 December 2010 12:12 (fifteen years ago)

or zootool evernote or spabba or whoever else steps in.

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Friday, 17 December 2010 12:12 (fifteen years ago)

zootool or evernote

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Friday, 17 December 2010 12:13 (fifteen years ago)

yes, but none of those currently have business models (except for evernote), so you should assume their goal (whether they know it or not) is to get bought.

also none of those are as similar to delicious as pinboard is, assuming you're looking for a delicious replacement.

caek, Friday, 17 December 2010 12:17 (fifteen years ago)

spabba in particular is nothing like delicious. it's a quick python script some guy wrote yesterday to backup your current delicious bookmarks.

caek, Friday, 17 December 2010 12:18 (fifteen years ago)

not surprised it's free since that's a service delicious offers.

caek, Friday, 17 December 2010 12:18 (fifteen years ago)

The business model for nearly all the douches starting these services now seems to be "get acquired", so yeah, I think of the ones that don't have a fairly obvious business model at first, there's a big risk that they get sold to some clueless cretins who run them on tickover for a while and then shut them down when the pressure's on. Sites that can stand alone and support themselves have a better chance of staying on.

Flickr is massively larger than del.icio.us, but I wonder what its future is. It's been smelling of decay for a good while now. xxxp caek otm

Should have mentioned pinboard earlier: the great thing about it is that it has an API that's compatible with delicious, so it's easy for plugin makers to support it. It works with the great Delibar iPhone and Mac apps, for instance. I paid for it a while a back, and if you just want a quick new home for all your delicious stuff, that's the one to go for. (Instapaper and ZooTool are better for solving that "I'll bookmark them and forget all about them forever" problem).

stet, Friday, 17 December 2010 12:20 (fifteen years ago)

xp and you can add new bookmarks. sure it doesn't have the social networking or many other features of delicious - maybe he'll add those out of the kindess of his heart, maybe not. and maybe if it becomes popular he won't be able to sustain it as a free service. who knows!

to me this isn't about not expecting shit for free, it's about yahoo choosing to run their business differently from google. that's their prerogative, but users are still entitled to get all uppity.

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Friday, 17 December 2010 12:23 (fifteen years ago)

pinboard, instapaper and (most of) google's services will still be around in 10 years. the rest: all bets are off.

caek, Friday, 17 December 2010 12:28 (fifteen years ago)

there, i said it.

caek, Friday, 17 December 2010 12:29 (fifteen years ago)

I agree. I can't even imagine the fallout that will occur when Yahoo kills Flickr (I hope they'll just sell/spin it off to someone, but still)

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 17 December 2010 12:34 (fifteen years ago)

Flickr is massively larger than del.icio.us, but I wonder what its future is

seems like the wordpress model would be a way to go here. they already offer a low-cost subscription but surely there are more premium enterprise level services they could charge top dollar to large companies for? is there no market for a third party online image cms kinda thing?

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Friday, 17 December 2010 12:36 (fifteen years ago)

there is, but it's pretty well covered in the info management/enterprise/publishing world afaict

caek, Friday, 17 December 2010 12:44 (fifteen years ago)

I loved delicious, was probably one of my top most useful websites ever. You will be missed.

Not a big deal for me otherwise since I've been cross-posting to pinboard for awhile now. I don't like it better because of the smaller community, but hopefully that will grow now.

Jeff, Friday, 17 December 2010 12:44 (fifteen years ago)

but it's pretty well covered in the info management/enterprise/publishing world afaict
ACtually it's not really. Enterprise image asset management systems are mostly utter shit, and are all extremely expensive. We've been looking at building on the Flickr API for our in-house CMS just because the alternatives are all way lamer yet much more expensive. There's definitely a business model for them there.

stet, Friday, 17 December 2010 12:50 (fifteen years ago)

ilx is my del.icio.us

dayo, Friday, 17 December 2010 13:02 (fifteen years ago)

Forgive me for balking at the really cheap $7.67 for pinboard (it's probably up to $9.99 by now.) It's just that I get e-mail for free, photo hosting for free, streaming music for free, even a personal phone number with text and voice mail for free. To me, it just seems that of all things to pay for, a site to host my bookmarks would be low on the list.

Every argument toward pinboard charging for its service makes perfect sense and is completely logical. Likewise, there's no place for that kind of talk on the Internet.

http://tinyurl.com/ccccccccccccccccc (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 17 December 2010 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

I pay for all those things -- MobileMe email (which I don't really use, would pay for GMail though), pay for Flickr, pay for Spotify, pay for Skype. More and more the good stuff costs.

stet, Friday, 17 December 2010 14:56 (fifteen years ago)

Lot of good stuff is free though. I really think commerce is just going to have to get used to advertising and premium services to make money online. It's hard to compete otherwise when there's always going to be somebody out there giving it away.

http://tinyurl.com/ccccccccccccccccc (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 17 December 2010 14:59 (fifteen years ago)

I wouldn't be surprised if in reaction to delicious folding, a similar free site gets started in the next three months.

Anyway. Where are the tears for altavista? O, however will we translate languages for free now?

http://tinyurl.com/ccccccccccccccccc (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:01 (fifteen years ago)

how google bookmarks all that different from delicious?

kanellos (gbx), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:04 (fifteen years ago)

cannot sort in descending date order ;_;

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:06 (fifteen years ago)

as in, oldest first?

kanellos (gbx), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:08 (fifteen years ago)

i imagine that most if not all of the features of delicious will eventually make their way into google bookmarks, esp if they're going under

kanellos (gbx), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:09 (fifteen years ago)

newest. descending makes sense 2 me for that, perhaps i am thinking like a geek - milliseconds since epoch etc.

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

well in that case: it does that

kanellos (gbx), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:14 (fifteen years ago)

? it gives me two options, title and date. latter is oldest first.

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

weird, that's all i've got, too, and it does newest first

kanellos (gbx), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:22 (fifteen years ago)

... this is oldest by date added to delicious. only just imported to google so by that they're all '3 hours ago'.

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:24 (fifteen years ago)

ohhhhhhhhhhhhh

kanellos (gbx), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:26 (fifteen years ago)

aye. fair enough really.

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

so the problem is with the script, then, not google

kanellos (gbx), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:29 (fifteen years ago)

O, however will we translate languages for free now?

translate.google.com?

seandalai, Friday, 17 December 2010 15:29 (fifteen years ago)

whats a good sub for xmarks

dayo, Friday, 17 December 2010 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

Xmarks isn't going away any more.

Jeff, Friday, 17 December 2010 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

huh, looks like there isn't a way to force any of these scripts (there's loads out there from the looks of things) to back-date the delicious bookmarks, even though the exported HTML file has the dates right there

kanellos (gbx), Friday, 17 December 2010 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

could probably hack it just to upload them in the correct order, which i reckon would do the job.

damn now someone has actually given me something to do at work for the first time in ages.

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Friday, 17 December 2010 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

oh duh that would make sense, wouldn't it!

kanellos (gbx), Friday, 17 December 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

Babelfish isn't going away.

I really think commerce is just going to have to get used to advertising and premium services to make money online. It's hard to compete otherwise when there's always going to be somebody out there giving it away.

But then equally users would have to get used to services they love and use a lot just shutting down. Most of the sites I mentioned use advertising and premium services anyway -- pinboard does that too. It's just a funny coincidence that everybody is now looking at it when it costs $8 to get in. I joined when it was $1 or something, and it was an easier decision at that point. I wonder if he'll reset the counter.

stet, Friday, 17 December 2010 16:13 (fifteen years ago)

Guyz, I was being all sarcastic about altavista RIP.

But then equally users would have to get used to services they love and use a lot just shutting down.

Like Google, like Facebook, like Pandora...

http://tinyurl.com/ccccccccccccccccc (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 17 December 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

You think the business model that works for the two biggest websites in the world will work for every site, right down to a bookmark tracker, forever? It didn't for Geocities, or delicious, or Vox, or Compuserve, or Microsoft Live Blogs, or AOL Pictures, or Jaiku. Video, Notebook and Wave also got booted despite being part of Google. I think the web's big enough to support at least site that wants to charge $7 to new users without it being crushed by competition.

stet, Friday, 17 December 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

$8.24 you mean

mookieproof, Friday, 17 December 2010 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

They are piling on the new users now. Doomed.

stet, Friday, 17 December 2010 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

I think it could work for smaller businesses. I work for a publishing company that puts all of its material online for free. We make our money from advertisers, subscriptions for archives, advertising specialty products for sale like spreadsheet versions of our online lists, etc. The free stuff is just there to get the customer "into the door." And according to president and the CEO of this company, we're not for sale.

Hell, let people bookmark and joining a local network of their friends could be free, but make it premium to see EVERYONE'S bookmarks.

http://tinyurl.com/ccccccccccccccccc (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 17 December 2010 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

is there an explanation of pinboards pricing model strategy, its sort of fascinating

i tried to use del.icio.us once but was just like 'whatever'

ice cr?m, Friday, 17 December 2010 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

The fee is based on the formula (number of users * $0.001), so the earlier you join, the less you pay.

So on that plan, Facebook should be charging $2983 for new users to join.

great editing:

If they would have said all of this yesterday and been more responsive, then there ould not have been so much speculation.

It took Yahoo 24 hours to admit that it admit that Delicious won’t be shut down after all?

markers, Friday, 17 December 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

i'm sure i read sth somewhere joe, but i can't find it now. here's where it started though http://idlewords.com/2009/06/seeking_testers_for_a_bookmarking_site.htm

caek, Sunday, 19 December 2010 02:33 (fifteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

First, Flickr.

I am, frankly, a mixture of disappointed and sad that after Yahoo! shut down Geocities, Briefcase, Content Match, Mash, RSS Advertising, Yahoo! Live, Yahoo! 360, Yahoo! Pets, Yahoo Publisher, Yahoo! Podcasts, Yahoo! Music Store, Yahoo Photos, Yahoo! Design, Yahoo Auctions, Farechase, Yahoo Kickstart, MyWeb, WebJay, Yahoo! Directory France, Yahoo! Directory Spain, Yahoo! Directory Germany, Yahoo! Directory Italy, the enterprise business division, Inktomi, SpotM, Maven Networks, Direct Media Exchange, The All Seeing Eye, Yahoo! Tech, Paid Inclusion, Brickhouse, PayDirect, SearchMonkey, and Yahoo! Go!… there are still people out there going “Well, Yahoo certainly will never shut down Flickr, because _______________” where ______ is the sound of donkeys.

The YouTube founders plan to make Delicious "easier and more fun" as well as sharpen its ability to help users manage information overload, Avos and Yahoo said on Wednesday.

Uh-ohh...

Glad it's being continued nonetheless though

My Life with the Thrill Kill Nult (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 28 April 2011 08:42 (fifteen years ago)

four months pass...

There's a message at the top of the page now, saying:

"To continue using Delicious, you must agree to transfer your account information to AVOS by Friday, September 23, 2011. Click here to transfer now."

Read some mixed things about AVOS reserving the right to delete "questionable" links. Does this mean the migration will take place tomorrow then?

Or is noone here using del.icio.us anymore?

'Main Shop of Love' Gigolo (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 22 September 2011 09:41 (fourteen years ago)

Still using.

You have previously agreed to the AVOS Terms of Service!

ledge, Thursday, 22 September 2011 09:47 (fourteen years ago)

That's what I got too. Don't know when or how, but whatever. I've basically no choice tbh, I could not handle losing all my bookmarks and there doesn't seem to be a website doing the same but better.

'Main Shop of Love' Gigolo (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 22 September 2011 09:53 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, I'm still on it. couldn't find a firefox ad-on that I liked as much as the delicious one.

I backed-up my bookmarks just in case.

original bgm, Thursday, 22 September 2011 12:47 (fourteen years ago)

I clicked on it and it said I had already agreed to it. Fake out.

Jeff, Thursday, 22 September 2011 12:51 (fourteen years ago)

Pinboard.in is the same but better. It's even API compatible, so all the clients etc work, and you can auto import posts from Delicious, Instapaper, google reader, twitter faces etc.

It also has an archive thing that stores copies of every page you bookmark for full-text search.

Drawback: it is way smaller, so there's not nearly as much joy in browsing public tags.

stet, Thursday, 22 September 2011 13:21 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, i was looking at that when the yahoo announcement came down. but nothing like the delicious firefox add on, right? i've been using that so long that it would hurt to have to give that functionality up.

original bgm, Thursday, 22 September 2011 14:00 (fourteen years ago)

I use the delicious add-on as well for chrome and its pretty handy for saving things quickly. I also tried Pinboard a month ago and its a pretty nice site as well, maybe once it gets more people on it will be more useful.

Traviswash, Thursday, 22 September 2011 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

If therr's a way to edit the URL the Firefox plugin uses it will work with Pinboard.

stet, Thursday, 22 September 2011 15:30 (fourteen years ago)

huh. that might be a fun little project.

original bgm, Thursday, 22 September 2011 15:52 (fourteen years ago)

Anyone notice the new look?

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 10:56 (fourteen years ago)

not sure what the point of stacks is, but then i don't really use the social features.

ledge, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 10:58 (fourteen years ago)

I clicked your link, James, and it logged me out?

Anyway, don't really have an opinion about the new look. Other than that I don't like that I can't click "view all tags" on the right anymore? Annoying.

I also don't care for "stacks", nor the 'cute' image to the right. But I have so little faith in these social websites nowadays I'm actually surprised and relieved to find my links are still there.

Young Swell (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 11:03 (fourteen years ago)

I noticed the new look because I wanted to do a bulk tag edit and discovered that I no longer could. but that feature will be back sometime I imagine.

Why aren't my tags in alphabetical order?

Oh, well. Ctrl + F did the needless work.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

I really hate that I can't see all my tags on the right, it just shows a selection? Meh.

Young Swell (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 15:02 (fourteen years ago)

i have not been able to log in, nor will it send me my password (even though i know what it is)

mookieproof, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 15:03 (fourteen years ago)

My gf is having the exact same problem! Not receiving an email either.

Young Swell (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

and is there a way to see all links for a tag? seems to just be the last couple. urgh.

having firefox app syncing issues as well.

at least we have cutesy avatars.

original bgm, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 15:30 (fourteen years ago)

Did you guys agree to the avos transfer? If not, they've deleted all your stuff and yr account

stet, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

i agreed and my bookmarks are still there (i'd backed them up in any case) -- i just can't log in

mookieproof, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 17:34 (fourteen years ago)

Mookie, I asked Delicious on twitter about this, for my gf. Here's their response:

"The password reset seems to still be working for others. If you email feedback(at)avos.com, we'll do what we can."

Maybe you can try that as well?

Young Swell (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 18:19 (fourteen years ago)

thanks!

mookieproof, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

No problem, hope it helps!

Young Swell (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 18:49 (fourteen years ago)

also from that twitter, delicious is apparently 'back to beta':
http://www.avos.com/the-first-20-hours/

original bgm, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 19:01 (fourteen years ago)

actually, it successfully sent a reset email today

mookieproof, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah. Is it just me not getting it or is the following strange to others as well?

If you’re not seeing all your bookmarks right now, it’s because we made a late decision to limit the amount of data we initially transferred from Yahoo!. We’ll be restoring all the data into your profile in the coming weeks.

I don't even know what that means, or why that would be a good "late decision"...

Young Swell (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

Ohhhh did it Mookie? Have to tell my gf because she still can't log in.

Young Swell (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 19:03 (fourteen years ago)

How do I left justify and/or view more than just 10 or so links at a time (this is using the 'tag' mode - I use this a lot to keep up with some specific IT stuff for work) - just seeing large print and scrolling and choosing next page after next page is going to drive me away ...
