Yes. 1000 posts is plenty.

And besides, new season, new weather. It's a new dawn, it's a new day, and I'm feelin' good.

K, some of your deep-blue-skyline photos just beg to somehow wind up on the "Album Covers Shot on the Streets of Chicago" thread.

Hey so to hop past Sandburg: has anyone here ever read Campbell McGrath's Spring Comes to Chicago?
http://www.zooscape.com/dataimg/zoo1058/9/250/10589540.jpg

(Weird: while googling to see if I could find one of his shorter poems online, I learned that he got an MFA at Columbia about fifteen years before me.)

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Is McGrath the guy that wrote that book of poems about Florida? (Which I haven't read, either, but he seemed sorta interesting.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Standing on the shoulders of decently-employed academics with mild small-press publishing success! Umm but so yeah, he did wind up in Florida, which seems appropriate to his poetry. But some of the Chicago stuff really pleases me (in an I-don't-know-much-about-poetry kind of way) -- there's a poem about the Golden Angel Pancake House and a few other city scenes, and then his ultra-long "Bob Hope Poem," which is pretty engaging even on a non-poetic level.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i totally want to check this out now!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a pretty excellent book cover. I wish I knew about/appreciated poetry.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG dudes, scroll down this thread by clicking on the down arrow on the scrollbar one click at a time. Then get ready for some crazy optical illusions with that poetry book!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the idea of poems about prosaic and/or popular things, but I always worry that it might veer too Billy Collins.

TrIpPY

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I underrated McGrath just then; he's got like six books and more attention/success than I imagined; and the stuff in the other volumes is more traditionally poetic than the stuff in Chicago, which winds up being mostly long catalog Whitman-type sentence/lines. So nothing too Collins-like -- pull the occasional line break out of the Bob Hope poem and it's already prose: "What is it with this generation of white men from southern California, the oil barons and water boarders, the highway builders, the golf players, the dream merchants and the oligarchs and the last frontiersmen, Uncle Walt and the Duke, Nixon's Committee of 100, and the whole Reagan crew, who willingly testified to their fondness for none but former Marines and self-made millionaires like themselves? They are such fossils! I mean that constructively."

Anyway tomorrow I will try and find the book and copyright-infringe a couple brief poems onto here.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

btw i haven't checked ILX since saturday morning, have i missed anything interesting?

i think you missed me calling you a hot sex-salad, and also telling people to come to sonotheque tonite for "dark wave disco" night which ended up being really fun!

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 06:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no! This thread is about to fall off into Lake Michigan!

It looks pretty outside again, but is it deceiving?

Less than 2 hours of work left for me today. :-D

Tomorrow night I go see the Shins alone. I do believe this will be my first concert ever where I'll be going it alone.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I'm sorry. I would have gone, but those tickets were shockingly pricey.

It is pretty outside. A little windy, but not bad at all.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the tickets were too expensive for me to go see a band I don't really care about that much. But now I'm worried about Sarah going to the Congress Theater by herself.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I might have to do the teenager's dad thing of going and sitting in the car outside for four hours, napping with the front seat reclined.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I've done the show by myself thing a couple of times -- I think maybe just Les Savy Fav and Mice Parade (both at the Empty Bottle). Oh, and that girl from American High at Schubas (yes, shameful). And I guess Glenn Branca in London, though I don't really count that, as I was there by myself for several days and just happened to wander into the Barbican Centre as a Branca performance was starting.

It is kinda weird, though. I go to movies by myself all the time, and that doesn't really faze me, because you're sitting in the dark the whole time, anyway, why should it matter if someone's sitting next to you? I sometimes like just dwelling on my own thoughts afterwards, too. But with a show, you're more a part of a social community. Even if you don't interact with strangers, you feel like you should be interacting somehow.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to a show by myself on Friday. It was fine. You can't really talk to people while bands are playing anyways. And there were some dudes I knew there, so I chatted with them for a while.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I went and saw US Maple by myself a few months ago. It was fine, except for the fact that I'm finally losing my punkrockingness enough that all ages shows get on my nerves. Plus, I'm still too lame to just start talking to people. Or at least I was then.

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Interacting doesn't have to be just talking. It can be exchanging glances, bumming smokes, holding hands, etc.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Too bad I quit smoking. That and I'm afraid of the legal rammifications of walking up to someone and taking their hand.

I do glance a lot though. Probably gonna get hit over that eventually.

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Glancing, not leering.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I enjoy going to shows alone, I supposed I'm forced to though, since people usually don't want to go to the same shows I do.

Yeah, glance. That's what I said.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh, it'll be pretty warm by June. Let him sleep in the doorway if he wants.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes??

I look like an evil android in that photo.

Nick will NEVER EVER look like Lawler (that guy above - and no, I didn't know his name until I clicked on properties). That's why I love him.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

That's Jerry Lawler, who bitchslapped Andy Kaufman.

Hey, I rode my bike to work today! I'm proud of myself. But is it legal to ride your bike on the sidewalk? Because I am scared of riding my bike down Chicago during rush hour, so I stuck to the sidewalk. And I walked my bike across big streets. I am kind of a wuss.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

kenan, you're not drinking?!

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

nick, i just started riding my bike in as well. i am a bit more used to riding on the streets, so if you want a semi-seasoned rider, we should see if we're ever riding out around the same time. i try to leave my house between 7:30 & 7:45. my commute inevitably takes me down a tiny portion of chicago as well.
i think that in some areas it isn't legal to ride your bike on sidewalks. but a lot of times, the roads are actually safer. you just gotta be tuff!

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

kenan, you're not drinking?!

It's come to my attention that it's something I'm not especially good at, and I should stop trying. I find that I am not someone who benefits from lowered inhibitions. I need every inhibition I've got.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I do need more weed, though. Someone email me.

Nick, Kelsey, Sarah, all Chicago people, we must go riding bikes some sunny weekend. And Nick. what time do you ride to work? I ride right down Chicago every morning, myself. Maybe I'll see you on the way home?

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

This morning I left my house around 7:50 and was probably riding down Chicago from 8:00 'til about 8:25 or so, when I got to work. I also need to buy a helmet. I am dum.

Kenan, I leave work right at 5, though it will probably take me a few minutes to get my bike unlocked and ready to go.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

we should all bike to work early on june or july 7th . . . the official "bike to work day."

is anyone else doing bike the drive this year?

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love to. What day is it again?

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I really do need a helmet, don't I? Dammit.

I probably won't be riding my bike every day, or even most days. Just days when I'm feeling energetic and confident and it's nice outside.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Bike the Drive info -- I found it. Always a hoot.

I need a helmet, too, Nick. I think I'll get one this weekend. I'm a fool, really -- I ride fast in the street all the time. And Chicago Ave's a busy road. And poorly maintained. Bumpy. It wouldn't even take getting hit by a car to do real damage, you could just hit the wrong pothole.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to bike the drive.

And the bike naked event.

I'm really comfortable on busy streets, much more so than I am in a car.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

or getting doored by a cab driver that thinks it's a good idea to drop a passenger off in the middle of the street. not that i'm bitter or anything.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

jeff, you & jenny should do it. if we time it right, you & jenny & leaf & i would probably use the same starting point.

speaking of busy roads . . . i'm normally comfy on them, but ashland this morning was awful. i felt like it was extra busy & everyone was extra aggressive. horrible. when i got to school & met leaf, we took southport to clybourn & then to chicago. from southport on it was lovely. just ashland was super bad.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I can meet people up north to bike south. That'd be fun, actually. I'll just leave 30 minutes early, get on Ashland and ride 45 blocks north, and I'm there. Hey, what's 45 blocks when Lake Shore Drive is 30 miles?

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh... registration comes with a t-shirt! I love t-shirts! I'm very excited about this now.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm up for it! (Um, I need to do lots of practice biking before then)

You guys would all whip right by me, especially since I only have a cruiser, but maybe we could all meet up afterwards to eat brunch somewhere?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 14 April 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no, we'd all just lazily crise along. I'll bring my camera. It'll be more like a picnic than a bike ride.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i might be somewhere inbetween. leaf likes to go fast.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 14 April 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

B-but we could still eat brunch, right? Where do you think we'd end up (on LSD - ha ha)?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 14 April 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yes! i didn't mean "no brunch" . . . just that i might be somewhere inbetween the picnic pace & the fast pace. i am going to try & go fast, but likely i won't be able to keep up the entire time.

I'm wondering this myself. We should probably meet at a restaurant. Orange on Printer's Row, maybe? Mmmm... Orange.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, Nick and Sarah, you wanna go for a little ride Sunday morning? Partly cloudy and 71 degrees, the weatherman says. The festivities could include breakfast somewhere, too.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds fun, Kenan! I never see you anymore.
Oh and is that yr real gmail address? I'm going to email you my office no. in case you want to coordinate biking home this evening. Though I bike slow because my bike is old and I'm a wuss.

How sweet.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't usually like to stand out there unless it's raining, because it's so much more pathetic that way.

I have done this IRL, actually. I showed up at a girl's house unannounced in a rainstorm, hoping to re-enact that scene from Top Gun. When I got there, I saw through her window that she was with another guy, and was in fact in the act of spanking him. I went home wet, lonely, and kinda creeped out.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

What's that park near Logan Square called? Does it have a good bike path? (the huge one - on either side of the road)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

not angry?

Nah. Not like she owed me anything. I was just being a cad, anyway.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

What's that park near Logan Square called? Does it have a good bike path? (the huge one - on either side of the road)

Which road? Are you thinking of Humboldt Park? I have no idea what it's like, because all I've ever heard about it is that it's dangerous to be there.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

It's probably fine during the day.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I do need to score some drugs, after all.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

We'd be fine. I look pretty menacing on my bike.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

cool. Where should we eat? You guys do breakfast better than I do.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Humboldt Park is great! They have a fake beach if you don't want to go all the way to the Lake. You could totally ride bikes around in there for a bit. I've gone jogging through there before. I've done Bike the Drive the last two years, and it's good fun...actually a I'm a bit sad to miss it this year.

robots in love (robotsinlove), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Flying Saucer is right near Humboldt Park, I think it's at like Division and California or thereabouts? Or there's that Hot Spot place we ate that time, but I'm not sure I liked it.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Or it might be better to eat somewhere in our hood and then ride to Humboldt Park together.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I am excited. After living here 6 months, sending out dozens of resumes and portfolios, and working 3 temp jobs (2 of which were completely for the bull shit), I got a "real job" interview. If I get it I will be the happiest boy in Chicago, at least for a little while.

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Good luck! I know that feeling. I know that whole story, really. Here's to real employment.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Go Dan. It's your birthday. Or at least, we're going to party like it's your birthday. If that's OK with you, that is.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of birthdays, Nick has one a month from tomorrow.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, are you into taking drugs? Because if you are, I got the X. Also, the sex, which I prefer to engage in forcefully and without affection.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, if we're quoting things:

I don't do drugs, I smoke weed.

Although that may have to change with this job thing looming.

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Who's quoting things?

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"To be, or not to be, that is the question. / Whether 'tis nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, / Or to take arms against a sea of troubles..."

Hey Dan, what temp agencies did you use? I think I'm going to have to go that route next. Anyone else want to chime in, please do.

I also want drugs. DRUGS.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 14 April 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

So listen, I've got a question. My brother is thinking about moving into the city from McHenry County (unless he moves to Buffalo Grove), and he's wondering what the rents are like for one-bedrooms in Logan Square/Wicker Park. I had a friend who lived on Kedzie 2 1/2 years ago in Logan Sq in a nice two bedroom, paying 900/month. What's it like these days?

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 14 April 2005 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, it looks like we are going to get the Hopleaf on June 18th, and have an open bar for at least 3 hours. And a buffet.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 14 April 2005 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear, a one bedroom for $700-$800 is about right, I'd say. We have a bedroom and an office for $750. It's not in Wicker Park, which would be more expensive, but it's in the general vicinity. Logan Square will be even cheaper.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 14 April 2005 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I've advised my brother that the city would be better, since I think he's gotten lazy living in the suburbs since, oh, '76.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 14 April 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

And I think if possible everyone should give living in a big city a shot.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 14 April 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

he should also try edgewater and andersonville, might be able to find something even cheaper there

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 14 April 2005 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I would love to go biking on Saturday, but I have band practice out in the suburbs at 2 pm. Also, my chain is a bit mangled, and I haven't figured out how to fix it yet.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 14 April 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Dan, what temp agencies did you use?

I've gone through North Bridge and Kelly. The two jobs I had through Kelly sucked, both in pay rate and in the actual work. I only took the first because it was the first thing they threw at me, the second one I quit in a week. The job I have now is through North Bridge. It's superior in every possible way, to sum it up. Also, a friend of mine had a really great job for a couple months through them. If you decide to call them up let me know, I'll put you in touch with my "agent" (or whatever) there, she's really cool and helpful.

Also, I live in Bucktown/Logan Square (no one has convinced me yet either way) in a smallish 2 bedroom and pay $850.

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Thursday, 14 April 2005 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to the Belgium Beer fest this weekend.

Thanks dan, I'll definitely check them out.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 15 April 2005 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff, the only temp agency that placed me (out of like three or four I was signed up with) was OfficeTeam. They were all shitty jobs, but at least they were jobs.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 April 2005 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

New Office was very good to me.

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 15 April 2005 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff, I'm so excited about your wedding celebrations. It sounds like you're really going to do it up right.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 15 April 2005 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Saturday is for Body Works at the Museum of Science and industry. Gotta love dead people in action!

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to see that next weekend. From what I hear, the comments book at the end of the exhibit is not to be missed. "What do all these dead people looking down from heaven think of what you've done to them?!"

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

No. I don't gotta love 'em. The first time I went there I ran into part of that display in a stairwell (slices of corpse). My grandmother had died pretty recently, so I felt sick to my stomach and dizzy. Then I hid in the cafeteria and cried for a long time. Lovely!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

We can never go to that. Once we accidentally ran into a small section of body slices at the Museum of Science & Industry and it really freaked Sarah out, to the point where we had to go sit in the cafeteria for half an hour. xpost

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm glad there are people who can stomach it, especially those who become doctors.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, sorry to bring back bad memories... But I've gone through enough surgery and trips to the hospital that it doesn't really bother me. Also, my gf is possibly even more stoked than me on it: she was a biomedical engineering major and has also had her share of health problems. Plus, we both enjoy the surgery shows on Discovery and shit. Don't think I'm going to become a doctor anytime soon, though.

i can't even stand looking at stuffed animals in museums.

I object to all the stuffed animals in the Field Museum, but mainly because they're excruciatingly boring.

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I still need to see that exhibit. I seem to recall my brother liking it when it came to LA. Also, speaking of squeamish art, I haven't seen Sin City yet. And when does Lukas Moodysson's new movie come out in Chicago? The one with the genital mutilation scene? Sounds disgusting, but I think I have to see it since I'm a fan of his.

Sunday bike ride is perfect! If I'm not too hungover and/or danced-out from the Out Hud show. Actually, you guys are going to be frustrated with me, I already know. I'm totally out of shape, it's ridiculous. But that's what peer pressure is for.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's why you ride with other people. But the idea is certainly not to hurt yourself.

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

BRING ME PAIN

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

John, dude, we'll be at that show too. And I will dance with you this time so you don't have to go dance with strangers like at the Junior Boys show (unless you want to anyway). And yay for the Empty Bottle. I haven't been there in a while. The last time was for a Dials/Telenovela show, but I got sick from food at B1te and ended up having to go home before either of them played. :-(

And I am HORRIBLE at riding a bike. Apparently, it's not like riding a bike for me, but it's still fun.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, dude, my bike is like one speed. I couldn't go fast even if I was physically able to. I was totally slowing Kenan down on they way home from work yesterday, but it was cool having a bike buddy.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

BUt how are we going to coordinate this? Oh no Chicago ILXors actually trying to plan something oh no! My suggestion: we all meet up at our house at like 10? 11? ride our bikes to Flying Saucer, get some brunch, then go bike around the park for a while. Also, is it cool if we invite Ben too? We typically have band practice on Sun. afternoon but if we're all biking then we don't have to worry about getting back by a certain time for practice.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

what time are you all riding on sunday? i have to be at navy pier by 10:30, so if you were all riding that early & heading that way, i'd jump on board.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

We love the Ben. And 10am seems perfect.

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Well if we do my plan, we'd be riding west from our house to Humboldt Park, so the opposite direction from Navy Pier.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I may can make it sunday, just don't wait for me if I'm not there. I don't know how much I'm going to drink on saturday.

One thing I've never done, is put my bike on the front of a bus, I'm totally paranoid about that, and upseting the driver.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I did it in Austin all the time. Not here, though. Seems like something no one does. I have brought my bike on the train, though.

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i've done it. drivers are usually cool about it. i always worry that they'll forget that i'm the girl with the bike, though. i end up being so annoying about it. we get to my stop, i rush to the front, arms flapping, "um. don't forget! i have to get my bike!"

yeah.

i'd not do it to avoid that.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The bike-on-the-bus makes sense for me, though, since I could just taken Damen straight down to Nick and Sarah's. I don't really understand it, though. How does it lock on?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Magic.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be very into riding, too, if my back wheel weren't so out of true that it rubbed on the frame and is now going to pop at any moment.

On a related note, anyone ever been to Oscar Wastyn Cycles on Fullerton? I'm thinking of taking mine there for a tune up.

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

it rests its tires on the rack thing. that part makes me nervous, actually.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to get stupidly anxious about the bus thing, I just know it.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I don't want to ride all the way to wicker park, then ride around, then have to ride back. I'm in okay shape, but that seems like it would be pushing it. I might would ride back if I was feeling good.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

You can lock your wheel to the rack if you hurry up.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 15 April 2005 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

if you go at a leisurely pace, i think you'd both be surprised at how easy of a ride it is.

Kelsey, you realize who you're talking to, right?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 April 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 April 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 15 April 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 15 April 2005 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the one you ride on all the time b/c it's "easy." we've argued about this before i think.

BIKE RIDE TOMORROW (TODAY)

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 17 April 2005 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm coming on the bike ride, i'm going to call N&S when I get close, because I totally don't remember where you live.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 17 April 2005 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

yay biking!

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 17 April 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed, a good time all around. Next time we just need to add a little grilling, a little beer, and maybe a little lake.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 17 April 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, me and Jaymc have the exact same bike.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 17 April 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man, that's too bad y'all. i caught the hella/outhud show here in mpls. kind of a wierd pairing but both were impressive.

also, the last time i was in chicago i went SAILING so clearly i'm pretty good at chicago.

g e o f f (gcannon), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Another show! M83 is playing Thursday and Friday at the Empty Bottle. Anyone want to come?

Biking was fun, but my butt hurts because I'm not used to it.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 18 April 2005 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw M83 last time there played at the Empty Bottle, it was an okay show. I'm going to see Yo La Tengo on Thursday.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 18 April 2005 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm on the fence about M83. I could maybe go on Thursday? But I guess I don't want to commit to it.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 April 2005 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

There's some serious preciousness going on on that new M83 album.

happy fun ball (kenan), Monday, 18 April 2005 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

when's the next bike ride? i'm set free after tuesday!!!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 April 2005 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know. Are you cool enough to join our biking posse, the B.A.R.N.stormers?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Remind me what the R stands for..?? Raging?

p.s. am i in?

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way, after tomorrow night, my radio chains are broken & I'm going to Brew & View. Anyone is welcome . . . the movies are The Life Aquatic & The Royal Tennenbaums. I'm not sure if I'm going to stick around for the second, but I'll be there for the first!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, I Rollerbladeâ„¢ now. I used to hate bladers until I realized how fun it was. I know it's yuppie, so I try not to do it in crowded places so no one will see me. Anyway, I think the bike lanes are better for cyclists - I hate riding on the lake.

Now it's the joggers who bug the fuck out of me because they're so frigging slow. What is the point in this? They all look like they're in pain, and none of them look very fit anyway.

Shatterproof Glass (dymaxia), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

kelsey, i would join you but squeezed is tomorrow night!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

the movie is on WEDNESDAY night. I guess i didn't make that clear with "after tomorrow." sorry. B & V on Wednesday everyone. Tomorrow i'll be recording voice tracks & mixing.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 18 April 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Kelsey, What are you recording voice tracks for??

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

my radio story. i'm recording tonight & THEN I AM DONE!!!! yay!

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

My interview is over! I think and hope it went well. Someday soon I might be the new assistant webmaster at MERCHANDISE MART.

I applied for that same job. They didn't even acknowledge me. I don't know what it is, but I never get any replies, not even rejections.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Huh -- I saw The Royal Tenenbaums for the first time at Brew and View. Being half-drunk made the more maudlin parts way more effective than they were on later viewings.

Wes Anderson's brother -- who did the art for the Royal Tenenbaums DVD package -- just published an illustrated novel.

Have you guys seen the subway "Virgin Mary" that looks like labia yet?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff, I've been sending out resumes since October, and this is my first interview. Truly, I feel your pain.

xpost - The Virgin Mary is right around the corner from my house, and I haven't seen anything more than a crowd of the faithful. And it's not in the subway, it's under 90/94. Unless there's a new Virgin Mary in town I don't know about.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Which, now that I think about it, is entirely possible.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff, I've been sending out resumes since October, and this is my first interview. Truly, I feel your pain.

Yeah, I've been sending them out in August. I've had one interview, and it was actually two days after I arrived in Chicago, for an internship with Coudal.com.

dan, if you work at Merchandise Mart, then we can meet at Hooters, the exact middle point between your potential work and my current work, for lunch every day! That or Ed Debevic's.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

ugh

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i know people that eat at hooters quite frequently. it's so depressing to me.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

This craze for water stains on walls is OUT OF CONTROL
WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH CATHOLICS IT'S A WATER STAIN, PEOPLE.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

A WATER STAIN THAT LOOKS LIKE A VAGINA

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

At my first temp job in Chicago, I worked with a woman who took her entire family to Hooters for her husband's birthday. This included their three children, all under age 10.

I've never been to one, personally.

And the amount of traffic backing up at the intersecton of Western and Fullerton from people going to see the salt and water stain is starting to piss me off. I just want to go to the store, please!

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never been to Hooters either - but Sarah has!

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I am going to start a chain of Hooter's-style restaurants featuring scantily-clad waitresses, but it's going to serve only vegetarian items and will feature a jukebox full of rare no-wave 7-inches. It's going to be called "Cognitive Dissonance."

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

But what will be the suggestive typographical cue a la the Os in "Hooters?"

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

featuring "the Lydia Lunch special"

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Since our primary market will be overpaid, horny, but aesthetically sensitive graphic designers, typographical cues would be seen as passe and gauche.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

We will print the restaurant name in a clean, classic font, preferably something sans serif.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I'm imagining a bunch of said graphic designers in town for some kind of trade show, drunk, eating imitation chicken wings, and supressing their desires to hit on waitresses in the interest of remaing cool.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

why not have a male counterpart place & call it something like "packy's"
there are a lot of tagline options here.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I think "packy's" might not be the best name.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't there a place called "Cocks" with a rooster logo? Or was that on a TV show?

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

A girl I know said that if she ever came into money she was going to open an Irish-themed bar in Boy's Town. It would be called T. Baggin's. The potential for gimmicks is nearly limitless: "Come lads, kiss me Blarney Stone" etc etc.

xpost

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice.

"Packy's" reminds me of that David Rakoff piece where he said that he was always typecast on soap operas as either "Jewy McHebrew" or "Fudgy McPacker."

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

My friend's dad runs a Chinese sports bar called Long Wong's.

HA! That's awesome.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I do remember seeing the "Cocks" t-shirts among the more white-trashy at my high school. Of course, they could have been some outgrowth of the University of South Carolina hat fad that was going on around the same time.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

http://giganticmag.com/images/ilx/cognitive_logo.gif

The restaurant should have a lot of white, with occasional and rather random spots of color. Like, the napkin holders will be all different solid colors, but everything else will be white.

A possible snag:

overpaid, horny, but aesthetically sensitive graphic designers

This kind of person, in my experience, wants nothing whatsoever to do with rare no-wave 7"s. I think "aesthetically sensitive" is the snag.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

We're green!

http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-greencity20.html

And the list:

http://www.thegreenguide.com/doc.mhtml?i=107&s=cities

Chicago (pop 2,896,016) stands out for showing a remarkable commitment to green design and construction, with 42 building projects registered for LEED certification, and has an excellent integrated public transport system, prompting nearly a third of Chicago's residents to commute using public transport. While the city's transit authority is currently considering cuts in service, John Summerhays notes that it's too early to predict the outcome of funding negotiations with the state legislature. The city has also agreed to purchase 20 percent of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2006. By 2003, the Windy City was well on its way to this goal, taking over 10 percent of its electricity from renewables. In line with the city's pledge of energy efficiency, Chicago offers tax incentives to city residents who buy historic homes and install energy efficient technologies, showing that a commitment to historic preservation and energy efficiency can go hand in hand. And the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) rates the lakefront city's water quality, compliance and source protection as excellent. For the outdoors enthusiast, Lake Michigan offers windsurfing, kayaking and canoeing while Rock Island State Trail and Sand Ridge State Forest are popular for hiking, biking and camping. Chicago does face year-round problems with small particle pollution, which can trigger heart attacks and cause hardening of the arteries, but this problem is being addressed: According to the EPA, the city is involved a diesel retrofit effort to reduce vehicle emissions and the State of Illinois is evaluating controls of steel mill, power plant, and other industrial emissions.

Go Daley Go!

I wish I were dead.

Sorry, what?

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 21 April 2005 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't Chicago NOT RECYCLE?

I don't. Recycling baffles me, frankly. It's something you have to do to get on the "green list" or whatever, but it uses more energy than making new materials in everything but aluminum cans. That's why aluminum cans are worth money, and old newspapers are not. It's an expense and an extra expenditure of resources, not a shortcut to saving the planet. Otherwise, wouldn't recycled toilet paper be cheaper than regular tp, instead of more expensive? What does that say about recycling? Recycling programs lose money, money that could be better spent, say, building a new train line, which would do much more in terms of increasing density, encouraging mass transit use, reducing emissions, and SAVING ENERGY. It's about saving energy, remember, not trees. Trees are farmed and entirely renewable. And the earth is not teetering on the brink of being made entirely of plastic.

WTF is going on here? How did the whole country get brainwashed into thinking that recycling is this environmentally and fiscally responsible thing to do, when in fact it's wasteful and saves jack squat in environmental terms? THIS IS MASS MADNESS!

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

hm lets see. i've only been there twice and in the afternoon after waking up real hungover. its near that bar simons. lets see. the next big north/south street east of simons. i guess thats broadway? maybe north of foster? or maybe south. hm thats no help. but its on the west side of the street, and its like a vietnamese bakery. there might be an eiffel tower on the sign, but i might be imagining that.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

the crossroad is definitely one of those east/west streets in that area that are kinda crooked. like half way between clark and broadway it sort of has a little break in the straight line and moves about 10 feet from it. if that makes sense

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I recycle (cardboard and glass/plastic/aluminum), and so does my workplace and most everyone I know up here. It may not be energy-efficient, I haven't done the research, but it nonetheless comforts me to know that at least a portion of the massive amount of waste we produce is going somewhere other than a landfill.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Land is another thing we're not running out of. Clean air... now that's a real problem.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

when in fact it's wasteful and saves jack squat in environmental terms?

why is recycling plastic wasteful? because pretty packaging is more of a priority for americans, and american companies are more interested in appealing to consumers than being efficient. so they make all sorts of plastics, which get really complicated to recycle, and then it all ends up being more expensive to recycle than to just throw stuff out and make new plastic.

if people cared a bit about conserving energy rather than having a pretty detergent container, then maybe recycling plastic could be a useful and worthwhile thing.

and hi.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Have any of you ever seen High Anxiety?? It's obnoxious, but also hysterical.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi, Julia. Yeah, I agree. Overpackaging is a real problem. I even get freaked out by double bagging at the grocery store. "Two bags for a gallon of milk? It already has a handle!"

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, maybe I have the name wrong... It's not the Mel Brooks movie. Anyway, the main character keeps saying "I wish I were dead," over and over until finally he says it enough times that he dies. Jim Carey plays Death.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

there is an eiffel tower on the sign.

xpost about recycling:

i think the argument that it uses more energy is a controversial one. i don't know what/who your resources are, but what are the criteria? what is the energy being expended? are we counting the loggers chopping down new trees & the (likely) diesel fuel it took them to get there? what about the cost of getting the trees to the plant and then shipping the paper that is made to distributors? are we including all of this? i find it hard to believe that at the end of the day recycling uses more energy...it seems too simplified to me.
BUT even if it does use more energy, i think it's worth it. i recycle everything i possibly can, and this includes re-using items first. i think it's worth it because it avoids putting more crap in the landfills, it uses resources that already exist rather than creating new ones. AND i think that recycling is going to have to become mandatory if we are going to make any headway on the environment front. we ought to look to our european & australian friends for how to do this better.
i think your point about the toilet paper is irrelevant because the reason why it costs more has less to do with the materials and more about demand. there isn't a demand for recycled toilet paper, there aren't many varieties competing with a buyer in order for the prices to go down.
i can recycle where i live because our landlords pay the fee to have the recycling "priviledge" with garbage pick-up, which i don't even need to illustrate the questionable issues there.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

kels, what's this "privilege" you're talking about? i thought garbage collectors just took blue bags wherever they saw them. why are your landlords involved?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i have to admit, i am out of the practice of recycling. i feel guilty about it, and tell myself, "oh, well, it probably doesn't get sorted by the city, anyway."

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

but it uses more energy than making new materials in everything but aluminum cans

This hasn't been true for years.

But the big plus about recycling, I reckon, is that EVEN IF it isn't efficient now, you can be sure that it will be in the future, and instilling a habit of recycling, especially among children who would ideally grow up knowing no other way, is absolutely imperative.

On a less tangible level, recycling makes people more aware of working for the community rather than for themselves.

(xpost to Kelsey, who is v right about stuff)

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc: people have to pay a fee in order to have blue bags recognized as recycling. this is my dumbed-down understanding of it. you are more likely to have your recycling recycled if this fee is paid as part of your garbage pick up. that's what the blue bag system is.
i don't know if this has changed or if the fee is automatically included in garbage pick up. i am thinking it must, on some level, because what would be the point of having blue bags at grocery stores unless it was a more utilitarian program?

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps i could affix some masking tape to the blue bag and write on it with a sharpie, "recognize, bitch!"

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know about paper. recycling paper just makes sense to me, and yeah, it seems that because there's not much demand, the prices for recycled tp are higher. like it matters SO much what you wipe your ass with, people don't just want something functional, they want something super soft with teddy bears and puppies in the advertisements.

it seems to me that recycling is nearly always worth it, because although it may not always be cost efficient (like in the case of plastics), maybe actively doing something so simple as recycling makes it clear that there is a demand for that, and so maybe as a result eventually there'll be more call for recycling that is not only good for the environment but also cost-efficient. that might be a bit ("a bit") idealistic to think that way, i dunno.

xp etc.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

markelby you are so right with your point about community. i think it also builds an awareness that we're in this together & we have to take care of the places we reside.

xpost to kenan:
land, like water and air, is a limited resource. besides, even if there is enough space, what about the side effects? you think that having toxic substances leak into the soil doesn't have an impact? it does. there may be guidelines to what is and isn't allowed to be put into the landfill, but i highly doubt that is regulated outside of "drop off" stations where people are "encouraged" to take their batteries, oil, cleaning supplies, etc.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Julia OTM.

(I recycle only glass right now - I used to do newspaper too, but they got out of hand and filled up most of my hallway. I never use aluminium cans. There's plenty more I could do, though)

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Kelsey, I am choosing to read your "encouraged" as "escorted by burly shell-suited men men with Italian accents". I think that would work for most people.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

On a less tangible level, recycling makes people more aware of working for the community rather than for themselves.

Yeah, look, I'm not trying to come off as a cretin here -- waste is waste, is all I'm saying. Not throwing so much stuff away to begin with is a more practical idea than recycling.

what is the energy being expended? are we counting the loggers chopping down new trees & the (likely) diesel fuel it took them to get there? what about the cost of getting the trees to the plant and then shipping the paper that is made to distributors? are we including all of this?

Sure we are. There's fuel used either way -- what about the cost of hauling newspapers? (Esp. expecting the same sanitation department to handle both kinds of waste -- that's turned into a bit of a clusterfuck in many cities.) Making the fuel cleaner is a great idea, and Bush actually, amazingly, passed a bill about diesel fuel emissions a couple of years ago. Positive step.

AND i think that recycling is going to have to become mandatory if we are going to make any headway on the environment front.

I think we need to get coal smoke out of the air first. Reduce dependence on fossil fuel in general.

we ought to look to our european & australian friends for how to do this better.

You got me there.

our landlords pay the fee to have the recycling "priviledge" with garbage pick-up

That's the city trying not to go broke on a program that bleeds money from every orifice.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Coming from MI where you can get $.10 for most bottles and cans, throwing stuff like that away was a bit of a shock to me (especially considering the amount of beer I've been known to drink.) Also, we had a free recycling program at the local transfer station, all you had to do was bring your stuff, they did the rest.

I do agree that recycling is a bit of a paper tiger, especially considering the amount of exhaust and other waste generated just in hauling the materials around. On the other hand, offering incentives to recycle materials can really help clean things up.

As kids back home, we'd go on epic can-collecting adventures to frat houses or down the sides of back roads where people would drink and drive without a care in the world, and spend all the money on candy or baseball cards or whatever. This is because there were no homeless in my town. The point is that there needs to be a tangible incentive (more than "for a better Earth" even though that's enough for me) to get a recycling project to work on a large scale.

xxxxpost but it doesn't really matter

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

kenan, i'm still curious about your resources.

i also agree with what you're saying (fossil fuels, etc.), but i think that recycling is a good "in addition to" that we need to stay on top of.
besides, we've been doing it the other way for so long & look where that got us.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

kenan, i'm still curious about your resources

I dunno... stuff I read. Magazine articles overr the years. I can't give a bibliography. And as markleby pointed out, some of this stuff may be out of date, I'll concede that. The first time you said "resources," I thought you meant, like, natural gas. :)

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 21 April 2005 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

land, like water and air, is a limited resource

But we're talking about sea to shining sea here. Landfills don't take up that much space, and don't really count as pollution.

there may be guidelines to what is and isn't allowed to be put into the landfill, but i highly doubt that is regulated outside of "drop off" stations where people are "encouraged" to take their batteries, oil, cleaning supplies, etc.

Well, people who put waste oil in landfills shout be shot. That's my position on that one.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"Magazine articles over the years" != Mother Jones, obv.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno. You've all got me curious about reading more current information about this. Maybe a book or two. I'll be back when I'm better armed.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Landfills don't count as pollution!?! Kenan, you don't need to do research to know that this is bullcrap of the highest order.

Landfills don't take up that much space

Dammit, haven't you seen that Simpsons episode??

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

thank you, markelby.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

although, i have to admit that i am curious about why you think landfills aren't pollution . . .

tomorrow is earth day, incidentally.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i am curious about why you think landfills aren't pollution

They're dirty places, obviously, but not something that's it's realistic to think that we can do away with, or even shrink. We need landfills.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry to interrupt the recycling discussion, but I apparently meant High Strung.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, you can use landfills to make energy!

But I really will be quiet now. Love all around and stuff.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Somewhere upthread I was pissing and moaning about not getting into a band. Well, turns out the drummer they picked flaked out or quit or whatever, so I got the call! First practice is tonight and I'm super stoked and kind of nervous! It's been a while.

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 21 April 2005 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooh! What kind of band is it?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 April 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The ad described it as "experimental-pop-post-rock." So take what you will from that... The people seem really cool and interesting, and have a crapload of instruments. I think I'm probably going to be the only one who plays only one thing!

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 21 April 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

A lot of the food around Argyle just plain sucks.

And a lot of it is really good too. There are just so many resturants, it's hard to find the ones that have good food, good service, and is relatively clean. I've probably been to no less than 7 Pho places there, and at least 4 or 5 other resturants. I definitely have my favorites.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

We bluebag it. I like it just because it keeps our trash can from filling up so quickly with soda cans. But recycling in chicago is fucking stupid. I think there's like a 14 percent ratio of stuff that is actually recycled, but don't quote me on the exact number. That's unacceptable.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to see Yo La Tengo tonight.

I just made three posts about three diverse topics.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"experimental-pop-post-rock" sounds like something i would like!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to work tomorrow. :(((

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 April 2005 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

and that's bad because?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

That sucks. My housemate has to work all the time on weekends. It's because he's getting screwed over by his employer. You're not some kind of contract worker are you?

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I may have to work tomorrow as well. I can use the money, though.

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"blue bagging" sounds kind of nasty.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

blue balls + tea bagging

Sounds futile to me.

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"Them balls ain't gettin' any less blue."

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 22 April 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually it's the one day a year I have to work on the weekend, and I've known about it all year. We have a big benefit thing next weekend and this is the last push to get everything put together. It just sucks to lose half the weekend. But I should get a nice big check next week at least.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 April 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry. i just realized that you wrote that you DO work tomorrow & i read it "i don't have to work" . . .
clearly i'm hungover & foggy in the ol' brain this morning.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 22 April 2005 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought you were just bitter. "YEAH! SO!?! I slave in the salt mines 20 hours a day, 7 days a week!"

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 April 2005 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, I just remembered... The saga of the Blue Line snowmobile continues! Yesterday the train stopped and I was right next to that house, and there are actually two Ski-Doos under there! The one must have reproduced asexually.

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 22 April 2005 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Or sexually. Maybe there's a rogue playboy snowmobile out there.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 22 April 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

haha

You're silly.

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 22 April 2005 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

So people are going to see M83 tonight? My roomie and one of his friends are going, and I may tag along if I can wake up from my nap this afternoon. So keep a lookout for the two tall assholes and one skinny longhair.

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm one of the tall assholes BTW.

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking about it. I wonder if it will sell out?

I am also tall and a longhair, but not an asshole.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, maybe I'm not an asshole. But I am self-deprecating, especially during this oh-so-slow afternoon...

dan m (OutDatWay), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Too shitty outside. It's another old movie night. I've been reading "The Biographical Dictionary of Film," and my list of must-sees is getting longer than ever.

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Kenan, You need to have another movie party sometime - and this time we could watch something better than Pennies from Heaven. Also, you should just do it because I always want to go to parties and am tired of having them at my apartment.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I should go see Sin City tonight... Mmm... movie popcorn...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I love it! And this time we'll leave out G0rdon, if possible. God love him and everything.

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Our friend Laura revealed last night that she doesn't like Jimmy Stewart, and her only argument was that she's seen It's A Wonderful Life too many times. Immediately I thought -- FILM FEST. We have to pull this girl over to our side! If you can't appreciate the subtlety of Rear Window, you're a boob, I'm sorry.

happy fun ball (kenan), Friday, 22 April 2005 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yo La Tengo was so good last night. It's amazing how the nicest softest bands can rock out so much live. Highly recommended.

I also had an interview with New Office today, and took a billion tests.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 22 April 2005 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I would also like to note that the Vic sucks as a venue. Asshole doormen, bad sightlines, stupid roped off areas right in the middle of the main GA floor, overpriced beer.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Saturday, 23 April 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the best part of rear window (the kiss) has nothing to do with subtlety

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 24 April 2005 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The best part of Rear Window is everything. The subtlety I was thinking of is in Stewart's performance and the dynamic of his relationship, and then again how that relationship relates to Hitchcock's treatment of women. It's a very rich movie.

happy fun ball (kenan), Sunday, 24 April 2005 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

agreed, one of the best ever

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 24 April 2005 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

And in addition to how Hitchcock relates to women, the movie directly addresses how Hitchcock relates to the audience. Not just in a broad and rather crass way like Peeping Tom, but in a personal way. It's about how Hitchcock relates to his audience, if you know what I mean.

Yeah, one of my favorite movies.

happy fun ball (kenan), Sunday, 24 April 2005 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

it's really good.

i don't mean to be snobby, but i don't like any venue bigger than the metro. it's just not fun anymore.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 24 April 2005 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

are you going to lollapalooza?

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 24 April 2005 05:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm definitely gonna go to the pitchfork thing.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 24 April 2005 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 24 April 2005 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mean to be snobby, but I'm suspicious of any venue larger than my living room.

happy fun ball (kenan), Sunday, 24 April 2005 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah the metro has overpriced beer too, but I can forgive that because I can see the band from pretty much everywhere downstairs.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

how much is a beer there?

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay, A.C. Newman is playing that! (and I like the Wrens too, actually, but not at all as much)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 25 April 2005 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

beer at the metro: $5 for miller lite or mgd, $6 for goose island.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 April 2005 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

And that's why you drink 40s in the parking lot beforehand.

dan m (OutDatWay), Monday, 25 April 2005 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus, that's an insane price for shitty beer.

happy fun ball (kenan), Monday, 25 April 2005 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I usually just keep a pint of vodka or tequilla in my pocket. They don't frisk you like the evil evil Vic before you go in, and you can easily take swigs in the bathroom or the photobooth. Or get a glass of soda for a mixer.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 25 April 2005 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't go to a Smartbar show unless i'm shitty drunk, before I started bringing my own, I'd drop 80 bucks a show.

and the drinks are mixed WEAK there.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 25 April 2005 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The Metro does sometimes frisk you! They frisked me before the Phoenix show. I even asked the security dude why that show in particular was a frisk-worthy one. He said, we do this for every show. I said, no, I was here three nights ago (for the Decemberists) and there was no security detail. No no, he said, not every Metro show, every Jam Productions show: that's who we're employed by.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 April 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

(Jam Productions being the promoters, btw.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 25 April 2005 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

not to change the subject . . . but . . .

I just wanted to post a quick announcement that should you have your radio dials tuned to NPR you may hear a familiar voice this Wednesday! Chicago's public radio station, WBEZ 91.5 fm, has an annual series called "Chicago Matters." Each year they pick a theme (this year's theme: "Money Talks") & showcase a variety of stories that explore different angles, perspectives, etc. on that theme. I just completed my story & it will air this Wednesday at approximately 7:50 am & again at 5:50 pm. My story explores bartering as an option to spending cash.
That's all!!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, i'll make a note of those shows. AND NOT GO TO THEM. FUCK FRISKING.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

congrats kelsey!

yes! i noticed this too. the tops they use to the liquor bottles actually pinch off the flow of booze, so a standard 5-count pour actually gets you like half that. bitches

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

At the first Michael Mayer show I went to there, I tried over tipping to get some stronger drinks, and by the end of the night I was leaving 10 dollars a drink (i was very drunk, seemed logical at the time), and THEY STILL SHAFTED ME.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

10 dollars a drink?!? Shit, they'd have to make me a drink and throw in a sandwich for that kind of tip.

dan m (OutDatWay), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Not a sandwich in the drink, the bread would get soggy.

dan m (OutDatWay), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

to be honest, if some drunk fool were leaving me $10 tips, i'd cut him off . but not totally. i'd pour him really really weak drinks so he keeps coming back and giving me more $10 tips. sucka.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Amateurist, if you think that's a vagina, I'm going to have to go ahead and, you know, call your sexual experience into question, thus making you feel less than masculine and resulting in some furious backpedalling on your part to avoid further humiliation and mockery. Is that really the route we want to take with this? Is that the step we want to take next in this relationship?

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, amst, everyone knows a vagina looks like this.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw a show on Discovery Health or something last night about surgical labial reshaping.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't understand. Was this necessary surgery, or have women found yet another part of their bodies to develop neuroses around? "My labia are too saggy!" Oh, honey... please.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, I have a wrinkly scrotum, but that doesn't mean it needs a tuck.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The latter. My response was almost the same but with my own, comically overblown male take on the issue: I never met a labia I didn't like!

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the main reasons given for wanting the surgery was that women watch porn, so they see porn actresses and want their junk to look similar.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

They obviously don't watch *a lot* of porn, or they'd see all kinds of junk.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The best part was that they couldn't actually show any labia, so they were drawing various diagrams in red pen on yellow paper.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

is that link safe for work? because i'm at work.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

No, not really. Though I wouldn't call it "hot," eitherr.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

drat.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i won tickets to see the hitchhiker's guide tonight for free. i'm thinking about not going though b/c i'm an old lady & like to go to bed early. on the other hand: movie popcorn!

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Duh, kelsey, that's the biggest reason I crave going to the movies! (the popcorn)

I just realized I don't think I've ever seen another woman's private parts, even on film. I mean, I've seen the frontal exterior, if you will, but no detailwork, if you will. Of course, I guess I saw my mom's, but I was too busy being just born to notice.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Rent Pola X.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

But Sarah... how will you know if you have misshapen labia? You could be deformed and not even know it!

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Watching porn is how I know I have a microscopic penis.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

it's sorta interesting. there's more variety than i thought there would be. i guess that before i saw anyone else's V that they all looked like mine.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

it's how i know i have microscopic boobs.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

oh please, i've seen your boobs and they're not microscopic.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish mine were microscopic.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

your boobs?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

He was either making a crack about having man boobs, or telling us about his massive cock.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a guy with man boobs on the show too. Except he used to be a woman.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

um. i was being sarcastic. a comment on how a lot of porns make everyone feel like their bits are small. ya know: big boobed porn ladies?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

let's all chip in and get sarah the big book of vadges or whatever it's called!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

umm, what's this now?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm at work, I'm not looking for the link. But it's a classic! Everyone should know it!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

let's all chip in and get sarah the big book of vadges or whatever it's called!

Or the Book of Big Vadges, even!

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Really, I think you should get Sarah a book of vaginas all on your own. My participation in such a purchase might be misconstrued.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, the internets is (are?) chock full of free hott vadge pics.

...I only know 'cause, like, a friend told me about it.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

My man tits. My number one goal with going to the gym is to look HOT in a tshirt. I don't care about anything else.

x-man-post.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it this? (nsfw)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yes!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps i should have made that a link

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah. I'll do that for you.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

oh no thank you!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm so happy that i started this line of conversation.

nick, the poster is really nice, even if it sort resembles a modernist interpretation of a vagina.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I did see some photos once, but I was in seventh grade and they were pictures of very diseased genitals to scare us into not getting STDs. It wasn't very sexy. That's when I discovered my gag reflex.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

That was probably part of an abstinence program.

I was really curious, so it went a little something like this:

SEX ED TEACHER: Ok, now I'm going to pass around some pictures of penises and vaginas.

ME: (FREE AT LAST! I'M FREE AT LAST!)

Then I get the pix and look at them with my hands over my eyes.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a gallery of sort of artistic photos somewhere online, but i'm not sure i want to search for it.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember that day. We'd already had sex ed like 3 years before, but our Biology teacher in 9th grade must have thought some reinforcement was necessary and brought in a guy from the local health department. I'll never, ever forget what those warts looked like.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

strangely, i had an evangelical christian teaching my high school health class, but he wasn't very gung-ho about scaring us into abstinence or anything like that. or maybe i was just sleeping through class all the time.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

This is why when you do Google image searches on penises, you have to use naughty words, because otherwise you just get weirdo medical photos.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that I, uh, do those kinds of searches.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, "vagina" turns up lots of healthy vaginas, if a little on the hairless side.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

if only i wasn't at work . . .

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

If I wasn't at work, I'd be angling hard to get laid. All this talk of vaginas has me thinking about... vaginas.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

why are so many porny images of women hairless? it looks kind of freaky to me...

JuliaA (j_bdules), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

the really depressing part of that, julia, is that i always thought it looked really freaky, and now i've seen enough of them (in porn) that it seems fine and perfectly attractive.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

It's fashion, really. Nothing more.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm surprised that 90% of suicidegirls are hairless.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not. They're obv. into body modification, anyway... shaving is the least extreme thing they do.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

If I wasn't at work, I'd be angling hard to get laid. All this talk of vaginas has me thinking about... vaginas.

2 times! Too bad my gf isn't online anymore, I'd be harassing the shit out of her.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I've changed my mind several times on the whole hairless issue: at first I thought it was weird, then super hott, then kind of creepy and pedophilic, then more fun to go down on, then understanding of the maintenance it requires and the itchiness it involves, and now finally... I don't know. Somewhere between "Oh! What a cute little girl!" and "GOOD GOD WOMAN THEY'RE CALLED CLIPPERS!"

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost) i guess. but i also see suicidegirls as an alternative to conventional porn and would've thought that they'd actively champion pubic hair as a way of getting away from all that fake shit.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

but then my favorite ones are the least body-modded out, anyway.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

But it's not fake like a boob job. Like I said, it's just fashion.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i'm not surprised that a good number of suicidegirls shave. the figure is just so high, though. i'm curious to know what the stats are like among the general population. i also have a feeling it's becoming more common among young people, although i don't have any reason to back that up.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i did it once just to see what it was like. i left a little bit so i wouldn't feel like i was staring at 7 year old me.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you're right about young people, jaymc (but what does that make us?). I think the more people are exposed to porn, and they are increasingly exposed to it, the more pube fads will come and go. But if you like hair, take heart! It'll be in next season!

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I did go to the suicide girls site once, but didn't get very far. It had just come out and I assumed there would be dudes on there too. Indie rock dudes.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

there's about one dude on manicjane i think.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm suddenly feeling like maybe there is too much info on kelsey out in ilx world. specifically: this thread. boobs & pubes.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost) i think there may be a site with both guys and girls. i think i discovered it accidentally once. suicidegirls really pwns all imitators, though. i mean, they have daily content, which is hard to beat.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Supposedly there is a Suicide Boys site now. Again... a friend told me (seriously this time.)

xpost

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't worry about it, kelsey! It gets lonely sometimes trying to represent the female contingent on these threads.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously! it's just you & me, right?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, i have something to tell you all...

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i knew it!

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

eh. who am i kidding? i didn't know.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

He was only going to tell us he shaves his pubes.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, I retract my earlier statement. Both jocelyn and teeny, though not actually chicagoans per se, have a strong female presence on the threads. I apologize.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it looks like there are several dudes on manicjane.com. plus a friend of mine, eep!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

By that you mean you, right, John?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't get why people shave down there. i wax my bikini line if i want the hair gone (& i have, thank you, because i've been in a swimming pool twice a week for a couple of weeks now). shaving gives me the worst bumps & it's just plain uncomfortable. waxing is fast, only slightly painful initially & then--done.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Both jocelyn and teeny, though not actually chicagoans per se, have a strong female presence on the threads.

I have this feeling that they have a strong female presence everywhere they go.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

haha no, s.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, shaving (*whispering and pointing*)down there is the dumbest.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

down where? i don't understand.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

You KNOW!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Shaving down there is like shaving anywhere -- if you do it consistently, you won't get bumps or itchiness anymore. But that's a large investment in grooming for something with dubious use outside of being... um... smooth. OTOH, going down on a whole whole lotta hair can have complications, and can sometimes cause unnecessary friction during sex and so forth. So I like this idea:

http://www.bestekeus.nl/shop/images/hqc684_00.jpg

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

And no, I wouldn't recommend it if I wasn't willing to do it myself.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i'd still choose waxing over that thing.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

that thing just trims, right?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

But you can't wax it all! I'm just talking length maintenance.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm going to go out on a limb here & say yes, you can wax it all.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yowch.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

painful, but do-able.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Just to reference the cosmetic surgery/body mod show once more, the 3rd and final story was about a porn star who waxed, then bleached her anus. I also remember now that the show was on E! (aka the worst TV channel ever.)

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

People who never read the Chicago threads are missing out today.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Loooootsa fiber. Lots.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i was thinking along the lines of toxic things if she's willing to BLEACH her ANUS.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

thinking about girls shaving "down there" causes me to think about a man shaving "down there" which causes me to simultaneously hold in mind an image of a penis and an image of a razor, which i find extremely unpleasant.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I trim.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

also, i am so glad i don't actually see images when i look at ilx.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't use a straight razor, dude.

happy fun ball (kenan), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

at least boys have a bigger obstacle. i could never shave completely down there b/c ... well, you know.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

and shave sometimes. It's a matter of courtesy more than anything else. If it's good enough for the goose, it should be good enough for the gander.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

it was fine, i thought. well . . . except for where the music comes in at the end. i didn't like how they did that. it could've been less sudden, more artistic & i didn't like the spot of music that came up. of course, i'm getting picky about less than a second of time.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Not giving a fuck is the way to go.

That sounds like a good idea. I'm hitting the coffee again.

Good luck with the resume, K. And, other K, did you ever have a radio show? I miss mine.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i had one in college. it was probably pretty boring though. a random smattering of poetry reading & music. i'd bring in special guest poets sometimes. i guess it could've been okay, but it was DULL.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm jealous of your coffee-fueled esteem, Kenan. A couple of days ago someone made EVIL POISON COFFEE here that tasted like oven cleaner, and I could taste it until I went to bed that night. I have no idea how they did it. Since then I can't bring myself to drink the work coffee and I haven't had time to import some. :(

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the second day in a row that I have gone to the coffee shop around the corner and ordered two coffees, both for myself. Caffeine. It's good.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a lot of pussy on this thread... I like how Bates is turning his back to the camera. Fah!
Speaking of cats and bad taste, yesterday I got home from having my tooth filled and curled up under my afghan. I noticed a weird metallic smell, but figured it was something off in my mouth from the dentist. When I went to go to sleep last night, I noticed the smell again. I had been napping under a blanket with cat vomit all over it! Ewwwww. It was on the quilt too, the one I just washed last week due to cat vomit.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

They like a routine. We can't have a bath mat because the first thing the cats do it pee on it.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh, that is an unfortunate hazard of cat ownership. I try to look before I sleep.

I love how the cats are lining up for their faucet drinks in those pictures.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Your white short-haired cat has cute little spots under her eyes.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, um, I think that's cat eye gunk or something.

They're all male btw (SHOUT-OUT TO MY BOYS!).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Cat related: I miss my family's cat. Wish I was allowed to keep one here...

Not cat related: I finally got into Indietorrents, and it kicks ass.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

My kitty Pepper likes to throw puke parties, so I never walk barefoot around the apartment and I try to remember to watch where I step.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

fancy a puke?

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

So, it turns out I made a mistake at work. I left the pricing on some change orders which were brought out to the sites where all the trades could see them. In other words, the workers were able to see how much we were getting paid (our mark up). DOH! I am so bad at apologizing! I mean, I can admit I made a mistake, but it's so hard to deal with anything before lunchtime.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, that sucks. I hate fucking up at work (and being found out). Was your boss cool about it?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

just tell them that it's the McLusky price & should anyone argue with it, it increases by 75%!

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Fortunately, it wasn't something I did for a higher-up. (Basically, everyone is my boss since I'm a receptionist/ office admin, but it wasn't a head honcho or anything). The woman who had asked me to do it got a little frustrated, cursed under her breath a few times, and said she thought she had made it very clear, but I said I was sorry and figured out how to fix it ASAP. So, she's ok now.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

That's good.

It was the office admin who made the EVIL COFFEE the other day. She claims she had to make it for customers and had never made coffee before. She makes me nervous. Very tight curls.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Listening to an old Hum record makes even the most mundane HTML editing fanfuckingtastic.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

That last one is the best, though it's kind of a waste of food (kitty hair, mmm..).

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know, I think he could have conceivably removed that plate of breakfast from the cat without any undue transference of cat hair.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish i had photos of my rats!

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Your what? You're kidding.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't you know already? i have two pet rats.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

they are v. cute

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

hubcap & pancake are their names.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently, nothing kills a thread like admitting you have rats.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no, that's fine! You have whatever pet you like. As more of a snake person, I see rats as cheap food. Or vermin that's extremely unpleasant to get rid of. My POV on rats is painfully mainstream.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Hell, rats sound like fun. All I have is a cactus, a jade plant, and some basil that doesn't want to grow.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds like something you have to tell someone before you sleep with them for the first time. "I think you deserve to know that I have...rats."

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

They just seem one notch too low on the food chain to be pets. The animal kindom is organized thusly:
1) animals we ride and strap things to
2) animals we eat
3) animals we keep as pets
4) animals our pets eat
5) plants.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Except that my cats probably eat horse all the time, so there goes that theory.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Now that I think about it though, no-one I've known who kept rodents as pets ever had a happy ending to the story. It either involved cancer, euthanasia, cancer & euthanasia, or pawning the animal off on someone else after it had destroyed numerous prized possessions.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

so far mine are very sweet.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

You forgot humans, but IMO, they are spread out among those five categories.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

My cats only eat salmon. Well, the one just bitches if I give
her anything that's not premium. Most cats won't really eat a pest,
they will kill it for you and bring it to you.

The other cat is a real bitch who attacked a stray labrador
retriever that we had taken in. She didn't try to eat her though.

All of the time, and none of the art (dymaxia), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

my rats really like peas. they go crazy for peas & honey nut cheerios.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

How long do rats live?

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

2-3 years

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

See, that's why I couldn't have a rat. I have a hard time dealing with pet mortality.

All of the time, and none of the art (dymaxia), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, me too. I have anxiety dreams all the time aboutmy cats being hurt or scared or something. Wittle kitties. It's just terrible when pets die.

happy fun ball (kenan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

well, originally i wanted a dog. i can't have one b/c neither my apartment nor my lifestyle is suitable. the rats were a great choice for me b/c they are interactive, affectionate, smart, caged & easy to leave should i go away for a weekend. maybe it's morbid, but i'm okay with their short lifespan. i will feel pain & hurt, but on the other hand, i'm not ready to commit 10+ years of my life to a pet just yet.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Please take pictures of the rats.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll try!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh. My. God. I just temped for the first time today. Which essentially boiled down to me copying and pasting. All day long. In around a 5,000 line spreadsheet. I'm writing some macros tonight to streamline this shit.

Good news is that I have an interview at DePaul's Library for a postion, next week. I'm sure it will beat copying and pasting all day.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I had pet rats for a while growing up. My mom was in grad school and in charge of the rat lab for a while. So at the end of each semester, she'd let us take one of the rats home, which would just be one less she'd have to euthanize. We thought we had really smart rats. We'd take them to her school and race them in the mazes. Also, they were really good for scaring off annoying neighbors or potential step-moms.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorite rat was named Malty, but I liked to call him Ratty Bat Bat. He lived in a hamster cage, but ALWAYS got out and into our drawers where he chewed little weird holes in everything.

Kenan, I'm so glad you don't have a snake right now.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

copying and pasting all day

I had one of those jobs for about a week. Then one day I got a migraine, went home early, and never went back.

I have an interview Monday for another job, this one at the U. Maybe this could spell the end of temping for our hero? Stay tuned.

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

that sounds like a magical childhood.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Magically delicous and awful, depending on which years you're looking at. The part with the rats was one of the less fun ones. My parents were getting divorced. I lived with my dad, but he was flipping out all the time because of the divorce. So I had to take care of my sisters and we didn't have anything to eat except spam. And all our pets kept dieing because my dad wouldn't let us take them to the vet. AND we lived out in the boonies. Yay!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Part of what reminds me of all that was that we watched Undertow last night. In the opening credits, this boy is running and jumps down on a huge rusty nail that goes through his foot. I was like, "Hey! I did that once at the farm but it didn't get all the way through the other side and I had this huge hole in my foot..."

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I shudder just remembering that scene. Did you like the rest of the movie?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I did, but I still liked All the Real Girls more.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

GEORGE WASHINGTON RULEZ OK!?!

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder if my next audio project should be stories from childhood. details of these wonderful slightly magical times up against the reality of what was going on. don't we all have an undertow? something pulling us into the darker waters when the surface can look like the perfect day?

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

DAVID GORDON GREEN 4EVA FOOLZ!?!?!

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think my undertow lives in a different city. It visits me pretty infrequently these days, which is great.

So, kelsey, you're childhood was wonderful and magical?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my god! I meant "your.." ARGH!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

nah, teeny's in missouri, and jocelyn's in indiana, and jordan's in wisconsin, so as long as you stay in the MIDWEST, you should be fine.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

undertow was really good! he just keeps getting better!

is missouri really the midweest?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan, I love the Time Traveler's Convention linked in your blog!

Also, you should check out this link in craigslist:
Woman from Venus to Talk.

I clicked on it because I thought they meant the magazine...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, missouri as a whole is kind of sketchy as to its midwesternness. but i'd say STL is.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Midwest? According to Atmosphere it is (but then again: Tulsa? Boulder? WTF Slug?)

I wanted to make a song about where I'm from
You know, big up my hometown, my territory, my state, but
I couldn't figure out much to brag about
Prince lives here, we've got ten thousand lakes
But wait,
The women are beautiful, to me they are
And we're not infested with pretencious movie stars,
And it hit me
Minnesota is dope
If only simply for not what we have but what we don't
It's all fair, it ain't out there, it's in there, it's in the mirror
Behind the breast, under the hair
Follow the dream doesn't mean leave the love
Roam if you must, but come home when you've seen enough
I love New York and Cali, but I ain't movin'
Too overpopulated, saturated with humans
And I'm not big on rappers, actors, or models
If I had to dip I'd probably skip to CHICAGO!
None of this is to dis no-one nowhere
Like damn, I'm from Minnesota, land of the cold air.
Too many mosquitos and our fair share of egos
But like my man Cybie says that's where my mind stays.

CHORUs
SO if the people laugh and giggle when you tell 'em where you live say "shhh"
And if you know this is where you want to raise your kids say "shhh"
If you're from the midwest and it doesn't matter where say "shhh"
If you can drink tap water and breathe the air say "shhh'

Got trees and vegetation in the city I stay
The rent's in the mail and I can always find a parking space\
The women outnumber the men two to one
Got parks and zoos and things to do with my son
The nightlife ain't all that, but that's okay
I don't need to be distracted by the devil every day
The jobs ain't really too hard to find
In fact you could have mine, if you knew how to rhyme.
This is for everyone around the planet
That wishes they was from somewhere other than where they standin'
Don't take it for granted,
Instead take a look around, quit complaining and build somthing on that ground
Plant something on that ground, dance and sleep on that ground
Get on your hands and knees and watch the ants walk around that ground
Make a family, make magic, make a mess
Take the stress, fuel your motivation and build your nest
It sucks that you think where I'm from is wack
But as long as that's enough to keep your ass from coming back
With a smile and a hint of sarcasm he says:
"I beg your pardon, but this is my secret garden!"

CHORUS
SO if the people laugh and giggle when you tell 'em where you live say "shhh"
And if you know this is where you want to raise your kids say "shhh"
If you're from the midwest and it doesn't matter where say "shhh"
If you can drink tap water and breathe the air say "shhh'

If the playground is clear of stems and syringes say "shhh"
If there's only one store in your town that sells 12-inches say "shhh"
If no-one in your crew walks around with a gun say "shhh"
And if you ain't gonna leave 'cause this is where you're from say "shhh"

St Cloud MN, Mankato MN, Duluth MN, Kansas City, St. Louis MO, Columbia MO,
Oshkosh WI, Madison, Milwaukee, Cincinati OH, Columbus OH, Boulder CO, Lawrence KS,
Tulsa OK, Sioux Falls SD, Ann Arbor MI, Indianapolis, say "shhh" - Minneapolis...

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 28 April 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

missouri is apparently conflicted--it's west of the mississippi so maybe it's a western state, it was a slave state so maybe it's a southern state (don't analyze that one too much), but it's next to illinois and iowa so how can it not be midwestern? So really we just go by where you are in the state, city by city.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

that's a good COMPROMISE, teeny.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, k, it was a fun show! short and sweet. high-energy. good times. i liked being done by 9:15 and then sitting in the bar and drinking for the next two hours.

jaymc: arrgh.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The bar that we're playing tonight, Cal's, is big with the bike messenger crowd, and since Critical Mass is tonight, rumor has it that a bunch of the Critical Massers will be coming over to Cal's afterword, meaning there might actually be some people there when we play. Also, I have managed to convince my parents that they shouldn't come to the show, so that's probably good.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick, Have you checked your email recently?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, now I did. Cool. Though I can't really see the pics that well because my work computer makes images really dark for some reason. But I can look at them at home.

What Sarah's talking about:

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn. Wish you guys were playing tomorrow, then I could go.

On a related note, I've got a friend coming into town this weekend, probably tomorrow. We'll probably be out around Bucktown/Logan Square at various bars. If anyone else is out and wants to hang out with a couple of idiots from Michigan, let me know. One of the last times this guy was in town he lit off a string of firecrackers in the Rainbo Club. So it should be a good time.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 29 April 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

You know what I love? Stereolab. I mean, I feel like I've been taking them for granted for so long, just as a fact, just that they would always be there to charm me. I don't think about it enough, but I really LOVE this band. My music collection would be so much sadder a place without them.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Sunday, 1 May 2005 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i wanna buy that new 3CD collection, except i have most of it already. but it's only $19.99 at reckless.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 May 2005 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Good morning. We (FF) don't have any more shows lined up. Oh no! In other news, Nueva Cats are playing Friday with the Ruby Lee & Crap Engine (and I think someone else I forgot about) at the Beat Kitchen.

Nick's parents are gone, so it's time to party down.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 2 May 2005 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

my friend, eric, is playing at uncommon ground on friday!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

New temp job today. I'm already trying to figure out ways to weasel my way out of it because it's nnnnnotttt goooood. I'm thinking the direct approach (i.e. "I don't like this, I'm not going to do it anymore") is what'll work best. Suggestions would also be appreciated.

It's better if they're entertaining ones, as I'm bored as fuck here.

dan m (OutDatWay), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

b-b-but eric loves the nueva cats, what's he gonna do?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Did anyone catch dizzie?

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

One of my friends had a temp job erasing all of the pencil marks that went outside of the circles on high schoolers' standardized tests. Is your job better or worse than this?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

no, i couldn't go to dizzee! we were in the studio until really late. also, even if we'd gotten out early, i think i'd have been too tired.

i'm going to spoon tonight. (free show at the metro.) (you need tickets, tho.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry i didn't call ya back jaymc. eh. i'll just email ya now!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Jaymc, Gimme some free tix! Who are they playing with?

Nick's 'rents were in town, so we couldn't see Dizzee and sing along with him. STAND UP TALL! (mostly, we like to sing the music bits)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan - My job's better than that. But being that's about the worst job I've ever heard of... I still want to get out of here.

dan m (OutDatWay), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea, Sarah. They were giving out the tickets at a Metro show last week, I think (?), and some people from my band got them. It's a warm-up gig for their tour, I believe.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

And I don't have any spare ones. :(

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

How was your Cal's show?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Cal's is weird, it's really small and that area is strange. And there wasn't really anyone there. But we played really well. We kicked ass. Why the fuck aren't we like hugely famous yet? WHAT IS WRONG WITH AMERICA?

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

have you guys seen/heard the band midstates? the lead singer recorded the canasta ep. anyway, i ran into the keyboard player (sasha) at jinx yesterday. apparently, she used to work with ben at borders? (maybe you know this story already.) anyway, i heartily recommended that she go see you when you play next.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, just for contrast, the best temp job I've heard of (from the same guy, who did it with some other friends from his band) consisted of judging entries for cat food jingles. Some company was having a contest, so they got to sit and listen to an answering machine filled with hilariously awful made-up cat food jingles all day.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 2 May 2005 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, jaymc, that brings us one person closer to total world domination.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 2 May 2005 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd rather listen to cat-food jingles all day than listen to suits talk abot multimillion dollar real estate deals.

dan m (OutDatWay), Monday, 2 May 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

And listen to a litany of other middle manager types talk in the most contrived tones to other souless desk jockeys.

I sound bitter. I liked my last job better and wish I could go back.

dan m (OutDatWay), Monday, 2 May 2005 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc, I've seen their fliers. I'll ask ben about sasha.

In case you weren't all aware, the gin & tonics at Rainb0 are pretty big.

Hang in there, dan!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 2 May 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

We were sitting outside of Cal's before the show on Friday with the dudes from Spectaculo, and this really drunk girl came stumbling out and sat at a table next to us. She pulled out a cell phone and an address book and called someone in Baltimore: "HEY! I'm in Chicago at this bar called...Cal's? It's at...where is it? It's on...Wells? I just wanted to let you know in case I disappear and you never hear from me again, I'm at Cal's in Chicago." She then talked to us for at least half an hour, spinning this looong tale about how her name is Fleur, and she's from Oregon and she's on the way to Maryland to collect an inheritance and the door on the Amtrak train closed on her hand (she was wearing a finger cast) and how they were going to upgrade her to a sleeper and give her lots of money and how she accidently got off in Chicago and met some biker dude who took her to Cal's. But what made the story most interesting was how obvious it was that it was all complete bullshit that she was making up as she was going along. All of us who were listening to her were completely aware that she was just lying her ass off. It was great. Sarah could probably tell more, I got tired of listening to her and wandered off for a while.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 2 May 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

that's awesome

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 May 2005 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

my friend in chicago has one extra spoon ticket. email me i'll give yuo her email address or phone number and see if she stil has it.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got an extra ticket for the Cubs vs the Mets next tuesday, if anyone wants to go. I'll let it go for good company and buying me a few beers and a hot dog. I've also got to figure out a way to get quickly to The Books show at the Empty Bottle between 10 and 11, so I may leave early.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

omg are there tickets left for the books show?!?!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

What time is the Cubs game, Jeff? I want to go if it's not during work hours.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i've never been to a baseball game. am i still an american?

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, Jeff, I'd love to go, but I'm really busy this month.

Anyone else going to one of the Cubs / Sox games later this season? We should have planned for that one - it could have been fun.

you work for kay (dymaxia), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff -- I'm interested in both Cubs and Books. But it looks like Nick has first dibs on Cubs.

Kels -- I doubt that the show has sold out.

I don't have any tickets this season for any games. I usually wait for someone to tell me they have an extra, haha!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

buh . . .am i an american?

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Mom?
2. Apple pie?
3. Hot dogs?

nick:
1. great
2. good
3. ugly

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i almost picked hot doug's for restaurant club this week. but decided it would be better to go during the summer.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Your American quotient is...50%!!! We'll let you stay for now, but you better shape up.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

You're in a restaurant club!? That sounds fun. But I think I'd like to be in a veggie restaurant club.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah every friday night a group of people goes out to a different restaurant. it's been happening every single week for the past five years. you get an e-mail early in the week that says what the restaurant is, and then you can rsvp if you feel like going. you're obligated to be the one who picks the restaurant at least once a year. actually, that all makes it sound all official and shit. m4tt pri3st started it, and the people who go are mostly people we went to college with. i like picking veggie places sometimes because some people grumble about it and don't come, and it's more fun without them, anyway.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

So we rented Spanglish this weekend, and it was an okay movie -- you won't be sorry if you rent it, but you won't be sorry if you don't. So Adam Sandler plays a professional chef, and there's this scene where he makes himself a sandwich for a snack, and it's the most aweesome-looking thing ever, all full of bacon and tomato and some other stuff, and with a fried egg on it, and wrapped in toast made from what looks to be a country boule. Anyway, just flipping through the special features, there's a recipe for that sandwich. It's what we're having for dinner tonight.

So yeah. Maybe you should all rent Spanglish, and get a fine sandwich out of it.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember reading a review of Spanglish that mentioned that scene and how it was a really nice touch -- he's a chef, so of course he's going to make himself an awesome sandwich, but it's not really remarked upon, it's just the way he is.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Game is at 7:05, so if you still want to go Nick, shoot me an email. If not, then John it is.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, dude, I want to go. Unless...you'd rather go with jaymc. Sigh.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Also I should warn you that although I love baseball, I know absolutely nothing about it, beyond the very basics.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

heh, you should go, nick.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I like you both equally!

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Any sandwich with a fried egg on it is a fine sandwich in my book.

dan m (OutDatWay), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I lied, the game and books show is on MONDAY, got my days messed up.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

That's still fine with me! (though I'll be skipping the Books)

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

You know the weirdest part of the movie, though? It's either a small detail or a huge gaping hole in the plot, depending on whether you notice: The Sandler character is a four-star chef, but he does not speak Spanish. He is a four-star chef in Los Angeles who does not speak Spanish. This is extraordinarily unlikely.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry... I'm off-topic. My brain is fried. I actually did a lot of work today.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Given the right place, I could believe a chef who didn't speak Spanish. But not a sous-chef, ever.

I'm eating my lunch now so that during my designated lunch time I can walk up to the Carl Hammer Gallery and see the exhibition of Chris Ware works. Yay art! I won't have to pay to get in or anything, right?

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah. The tradeoff is that the gallery staff keeps an eye you and tries to gauge whether you're interested in purchasing, sometimes through awkward conversation.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(I mean, that's been my experience with galleries in general, I don't think I've been to the Hammer.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Hay, hot tip, Nick! I was going to walk home today anyway, and that's exactly one block out of my way.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It's cold. Fucking shit, it's cold.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ware thing was pretty cool, mostly the originals for stuff that's been in the Reader. I was a little disappointed there were no color versions, since I really like his use of color, but I guess they add that later in the printing process. But what's cool is you can see the original blue pencil sketches he did under the inking, and all these notes he wrote to himself in the margins, some pertaining to the stories but some are just phone numbers or websites or names or whatever. If you go, leave time to get to the second floor, there are a few Henry Darger pieces up there but I had to rush to get back to work on time. The gallery peeps were nice, just asked me if I needed anything once, gave me a nicely printed invitation to keep, and left me alone the rest of the time.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

You will not. Otherwise, I'd give it a solid try.

Penny's Noodle House at Diversy..sucks.

That is all.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a Penny's on Damen too, they have good spring rolls and an ok pad thai, but everything else I've gotten there has been kind of weird. I think it's whatever they marinate their tofu in, I don't like it.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i was recently charmed by Cozy's noodles on sheffield (?). so charmed.

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I love Cozy's. Only been to the one in Evanston, but the coconut milk and red pepper curry was fantastic.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

there's one in evanston? is it as charming?!

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

By charming, do you mean how there are thousands of tiny toys glued to the walls of the bathrooms?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The food's great, too -- Renee and I would order from there like once a week.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought the food was fantastic & the toys are darling.

once a week? that sounds like a wonderful dream!

what is adobo grill on division like?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i've heard good things about the original location. (the division one is a new outpost.) could be wrong, but i think it's similar fare to frontera grill: nueva mexicana-ish.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a strong recommendation from where I sit. I've one of my best meals in Chicago at Frontera. Also, hottest.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

But yeah, I do recommend the habanero salsa, if you think you're man enough.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

the margaritas were good, and when we ordered guacomole they brought out a bunch of fresh vegetables and stuff and crushed them together before our very eyes. classy, and tasty.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean at Frontera?

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

At any rate, it stands to reason that a vegetable that was crushed ten seconds would have more flavor than a vegetable that was crushed two days ago. I want some of that guacamole.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

no, at adobo. yeah, it was really a big production for an order of guacomole.

Whatever, getting pregnant is totally twee.

No, wait, the act of getting pregnant isn't twee. But babies are twee.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 May 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

heh heh.

Thanks, I'm about ten weeks along I guess, due early december. It's been relatively easy so far but even given that it's more of a bother than I thought it might be. I am very thankful that I am not puking, but I do have fairly constant mild nausea, which is kind of tiring. I think it's starting to get better though. My appetite is great though, eating helps the nausea. My energy was pretty low but again I think that's starting to get better. I had my first ultrasound (as my OB said, 'just for fun') a couple of weeks ago and it was totally freaky. Made it a lot more real. It's like a science experiment in my uterus, very interesting.

god, teeny really stole my thunder.

t0dd swiss (immobilisme), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just flirted with in the weirdest, most insulting possible way. I'm on the street, leaning against a lamppost, smoking. This girl walks out of the apartment building next door, this impossibly hot girl. She is in the middle of a fight with her boyfriend, who walks out a second later. She's yelling, "YOU ASSHOLE!" Then she walks past me and gives me an absolutlely smouldering look, as if to say, "Let's fuck, right this second." I smile a tight, reserved smile. She walks on by, but because she's impossibly hot, I watch her go by, which she knew I would. As she walks away, she's intentionally working dat ass, hard. Side to side, on maximum jiggle. And damn if this did not have the intended effect on me.

I feel used.

SET JIGGLE TO MAXIMUM

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i wouldn't file that under "flirted with" . . . but maybe that's just me.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, you're right. It wasn't about me. But it did involve me, and sexiness.

What's flirting?

slightly more subdued (kenan), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Kelsey, it seems you are cravin monounsaturated fats. I crave those all the time. IN fact, when me mumsy was with child (ie: me), she craved olives constantly. I eat them from the jar/can.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG is kelsey preganant too?

slightly more subdued (kenan), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

monounsaturated are the goodies, right? my entire lunch felt provocative. i should've had some wine with it. i bought fancy olives from the olive bar at whole foods. i had good bread. lovely cheese. a small portion of potato leek soup. sparkling water.

I AM NOT PREGNANT. Nor am I trying to get that way.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Many before you have said the same.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

And were you wearing a trench coat?

Kelsey, Yes, the good kinds of fats. I always lust after the olives on the bar at Whole Foods, but have never dared buy them. I guess I'm worried they're too good for me??

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Kenan, I guess that girl is probably available now.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 May 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

teeny (teeny), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

man i love me that olive mix from middle eastern bakery. haven't had it in a while. olives coated with herbs and filled with things like almonds and celery and garlic.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, each olive is filled with just one of those things. it's like a sampler.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

HA! Yeah, right.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, she'll have one many-splendored night with somebody, but that don't make the bitch "available."

slightly more subdued (kenan), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Aren't olives aged though? (I don't know WTF I'm talking about)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"I will take the finest olives in the house!"

"Here you are, Miss, we have a fine jar of 1928 olives, a fine year indeed for the jalapeno stuffed variety, I must say."

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Good job Dan!
And thanks Jordan, I will be making a trip to the comic store tomorrow. (BTW, I didn't want to sidetrack the other thread, but I will trade you 3 illegal seasons of Space Ghost Coast to Coast for illegal Kids in the Hall, if you wish. Also, I may be visiting Madison sometime soon.)

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh but that show is at Logan Square Auditorium? I'm not too fond of that space - shitty sound and really expensive drinks.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I bought the tickets thinking it was at the Empty Bottle itself and then realized it wasn't.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 6 May 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't like that olive mix stuff, too greasy.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 7 May 2005 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

What I did last night:

Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here (pic thread)

slightly more subdued (kenan), Saturday, 7 May 2005 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i went to bed at 4 am last night (this morning), and i woke up two hours later feeling like someone had scooped out my lungs. i had to cough, but it was all coming from my chest rather than my throat, which didn't hurt at all. i couldn't get back to sleep for 45 minutes because it was hard to breathe.

it feels a little better now, but ... what the hell. i had one cigarette last night. a few beers. i also biked ~9 miles. trying to ascertain if any of it's related.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 7 May 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey nick, looks like the game might be postponed tomorrow, thunderstorms likely. I'll have to see what replacement tickets I can get if it is. You're still welcome to go then.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 9 May 2005 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

So who is going to the books tonight?!?!?!?!? I'm super excited!!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

ohhhhh ... forgot about the books ... ummm. ok. i might need to go into the studio for a little while first.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

it starts at 10. so late! i feel so old!

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm kind of surprised Nick hasn't mentioned this, but Diplo is djing after the LCD Soundsystem/ MIA show on the 19th. It's at the Smart Bar. (I think Nick was thinking it was at the Small Bar near our house, but anyway, sorry Nick...)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 9 May 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice. I still haven't bought tickets to that show, because I keep telling myself I'll get them from Hi-Fi (next to the Metro) when I'm in the area so I can avoid service fees, but then I'm never in the area. I should do that soon. SmartBar = under the Metro = you can usually get in free to SmartBar with a Metro ticket. (That's how I saw Bob Mould DJ after a Mogwai show.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 May 2005 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still going to the boooooooks.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 9 May 2005 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yay!!
jeff, are you going alone or with yer lady?

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 9 May 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

alone, jenny has one more exam, so she can't go out till lateer this week. You'll have to deal with me alone, which can be terribly boring.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 9 May 2005 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff, any word on what's going on for the game? Is it rained out?

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 9 May 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll let you know as soon as I know.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 9 May 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm feeling really emotional and sensitive today, and no one at work has said anything about my haircut and highlites. NOOO!!! Also, I want chocolate. Chicago love, please.

*hugs*

slightly more subdued (kenan), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I like giving internet hugs. Real hugs have so much baggage attached. Internet hugs are just like saying, "Hey... you're alright." Maybe I could snap and point while I say that. "Hey, Sarah! You're groooooovy!"

slightly more subdued (kenan), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for all the virtual stuff.

You know, in the real world I'm totally not a hug-gy person. I felt awkward hugging people growing up because it made me more selfconscious of being so much taller. I really only like to hug my family members and Nick. But recently I've been trying to be more open to being hugged. I never initiate it though.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I am the opposite of huggy. Hugging strangers or people you just met is the weirdest. I'd honestly rather be insulted by a stranger than hugged by one.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I don't know. Maybe those huggy people come from exceptionally demonstrative families?

I'm still feeling weird about hugging Nick's family even though I care about them.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

My family was very un-huggy when I was a kid, so it took me awhile to get used to hugging. Now I can hug with the best of 'em, though.

xpost, yeah Sarah, my family then inexplicably switched to hugging sometime after I moved out of the house. It freaks out my girlfriend, who also came from a very unhuggy family.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

My boss left for the day. Huzzah.

I want to break into the exciting world of commercial jingle recording. How do you think one does that?

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea, but I fully support that career choice.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't that sound awesome? Get into the studio at 8:00, write like 30 one-minute songs about cat food and used cars, cash yr checks, and go home.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

You need to build a portfolio of jingles, I guess. But how do you build a portfolio without any experience?

That's more a question for myself, really. I did find an ad today in this little rag called "Chicago Innerview" that says, "Part time: build ads for magazine while building clips for your portfolio." Oh man, tht would be perfect.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

xposts: Thanks, kelsey. You know, I rarely say anything when my coworkers get their hair done. I just figure they lead a fancier lifestyle than I do and so it's totally an every day thing for them to come in with more highlites or whatever. I'm such a snob.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

nick, you should talk to this guy.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 May 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend of mine has a jingle recording business with another guy. They're trying to market themselves as the hip, indie jingle alternative. They basically recorded about twenty samples of tunes in different styles, set up a website, and started passing out business cards and milking connections. I guess it's going pretty well.

Also the other guy in Cleft & Cloven has been getting some jingle work. He just did a radio ad for a place in town. It was pretty tough to make up a melody for the phone number because it has, like, four sevens in it. He's also doing something for a Chicago radio commercial where they want people to start moving into this Mexican neighborhood, or something. No idea how he's getting these gigs.

Apparently, yeah, the best way is to make a demo tape of like ten 30-second commercials for whatever, as an example of what you can do, then send it out to local companies and advertising companies and what-have-you. Normally I wouldn't be motivated enough to actually do this, but I was thinking about doing some kind of solo recording while Sarah's out of town this weekend and it sounds kinda fun to do a bunch of 30-second songs, so maybe I'll just try it on a lark.
