The mayor of Sunderland gets on it:

http://homegame.org/merch/HGflava.jpg

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The exchanges go:

Labour: 358
Tory: 194
Lib Dems: 62

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry, was that the standing before the election or the prediction for right now?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Lib Dems reckon that they have Eastbourne. Toploader Country.

Ned - that's what the betting exchanges are predicting.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom, what's the thinking behind why the postal vote would increase Labour's majority? I can see that the increase in the postal vote would make the exit poll more unreliable, but can't see why it would go in Labour's favour.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the live updated betting exchanges on Spreadfire at this moment. Apparently they accurated forecasted 49 of 50 states in the US elections, so it's probably our best guide at the moment.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

That was just a guess Keef, but

a) Labour have really hammered the postal votes this election
b) I tend to associate postal votes with OAPs in working class areas. The old "Labour thick or thin" electorate.

But, yeah, that's just a guess. It's definitely a wild card for the whole thing.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It will be interesting to see how much non-uniform swing is a factor when comparing overall percentages and actual outcomes.

Keef: because the biggest postal vote-rigging scandal so far was a Labour-organised one?

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Who will be first to declare Sunderland South or Torbay or somewhere else ?

Torbay normally draft in bank workers to count, as they have skills in counting accurately and fast.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

OK cheers Dom... Makes sense.

Interesting the lack of increase for the Lib Dems... I find that fairly surprising given the number of people this time that claim to want to vote for them. It's felt like the most for years.

Caitlin, I must've missed the big postal vote rigging thing.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It was for Birmingham council seats, I think; the local party organisation was heavily implicated in organised ballot fraud.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

looks like Sunderland South - they have got systems in place to be first

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

So it seems to be a big movement by Lib Dem onto Labour territory, which has no effect because there are so few Lib/Lab marginals, whilst there's a smaller march by the Tories on Lib Dem territory, where there are a lot of marginals. Basically the LDs are winning with one hand and losing with the other.

The Lib Dems are claiming Birmingham Perry Barr.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Who will be first to declare Sunderland South or Torbay or somewhere else ?

Sunderland South are trying to beat their previous record - if they do, they'll be declaring in the next 10 minutes.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

We could have a quick game of ranking the Peter Snow gimmicks while we wait. The Election Battleground Triangle would probably be slightly behind the William Hague Magic Steps.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the graphical gimmicks, but the sound effects that go with them are already starting to grate.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Upcoming Peter Snow gimmick: Grand Theft Auto: Thanet South

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Perry Barr is currently a 23% Labour majority, so if the Lib Dems are right... crumbs.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Last year's Sunderland South results

do you mean 2001's results?

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Lib's confident in a part of Birmingham? A city? An industrial city? This is going to be a fun night. I don't think Lib's will do too well but it bodes well for some surprises.

A / F#m / Bm / D (Lynskey), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

LDs have made big moves into city local governments in the past 10 years, so that wouldn't be *too* surprising. They took Sheffield city council a few years ago.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Last election's", sorry.

Lib Dem's are also confident in Birmingham Yardley.

Which Brum constituency has the student population?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Sunderland South turnout up to 49.9%

HERE WE GO....

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god, I should know about Brum. I think it's Edgbaston. In fact, it must be.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

1-0 to Labour.

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The Tories are going to break 200 seats, aren't they?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i predicted only 40-50 more Tory seats, so yes that would put them just over 200

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup, Dom. Always thought they would though. It's a night for looking for the bonkers unpredictable ones. It's also the night for having a nice bottle of 99 reserve rioja.

A / F#m / Bm / D (Lynskey), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks like it. And that means more Howard, at least for a few years.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The exchanges call it:

Labour: 357
Con: 200
LD: 64

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Foot's Labour low-point in 83 was just 209 seats. Hopefully the Tories won't beat that.

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Lynskey - good point. I'm going to make a jug of pink grapefruit squash.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It's pretty nervy tonight... Not been like this since '92.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going for coffee-with-added-Kahlua myself

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

HoBB- I'm pretty sure that 209 is the target Howard has in his head.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm drinking Bourbon and Branch, because I've got no Coke to mix with it.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

1992 - what was the tory majority something like 40?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, no I'm not, because they're having a row in the kitchen.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Look, we have no news! Let's paint on a sheet of cloth!

Neil Buchanan: political revolutionary.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What was the total number of seats in '83?

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

LIZO MZIMBA IS DOING ELECTION COVERAGE!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

LIZO! OFF NEWSROUND! ON GROWN UP NEWS!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

LIZO'S IN A SUIT! It looks quite good on him, too.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

In history at school there were 653 I think? That would've been about '87 thought; probably not much difference.

Here's the detail about the '92 election:

Labour worried that George Galloway's "Get Rid of the Yid" campaign in Bethnal Green and Bow may have worked.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Was his campaign really as anti-semitic as some people described it? Was it a case of him only ramping up the anti-semitism with the Muslim electors?

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"In Cleethorpes things are very tight" - and a big BNP vote in Grimsby. Don't I live in a lovely area.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

He's going for the Krishnan Guru-Murthy career path, then.

He's got better glasses. Big, chunky things. Lovely.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

It's tiny faced future fallguy Ruth Kelly! Most vulnerable Labour minister.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

First Ruth Kelly sighting of the evening. It's Tracey Thorne she reminds me of, isn't it? I think.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder how soon tonight will get a Portillo moment i.e either a high profile Tory or New Labour candidate losing their seat.

Oliver Letwin ?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes... Fingers crossed for Oliver Letwin.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I look forward to moments at declaration, when you get hecklers shouting at the BNP.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Possibly David Davis too, although the local news recently has said he's probably safe.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Shirley Williams reckons Lib Dems will take Cardiff Central - that'd be overturning a 1.9% Labour majority if so.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Howard is vulnerable!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I want another declaration! I'm at work and relying on ilx for my election coverage tonight.

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The press were making a lot of the Lib Dem's "decapitation" strategy recently - deliberately going for Howard, Letwin and Davis rather than more marginal seats. I'm not convinced it's going to work, though.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Note for people - the BBC coverage is broadcasting live on the internet: http://www.bbc.co.uk/election

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you thinking what I am thinking ? Strategic Lib Dem vote ousts Howard - how sweet would that be?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't want BBC want ilx. xpost

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

If the Lib Dems do throw a punk card at Howard, I'm gonna wake the whole street up screaming.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

BBC were talking down the possibility of Folkestone coup earlier in the night, cos they aren't keen on what the Lib Dems did locally there for some reason.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be very funny. That would beat the Portillo incident.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

What would be even more shocking: if the anti-war independant in Sedgefield manages to beat TB.

Does anyone think Jack Straw will get beaten by that independant ex-ambassador chap?

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Reg Keys should break at least 5,000 votes in Sedgefield.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

There's two people called Sian Lloyd on telly. What are the odds, etc.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

It's this seat in Wales where the independant is going to overturn a 19,000 majority that I'm interested in.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

If Howard was out, that would be FUCKING MAGNIFICENT. Scupper any talk of a Tory revival, which frankly doesn't seem to be the case.

They are only picking up due to Labour's fall in support, not to any great increase in theirs. Although, disappointing to see them up marginally - *though only by about the same as in 2001* - in my own constituency, which is indeed Sunderland South. And yes, I was one of many to increase the LibDem vote there, but admittedly I voted for them in 2001 too!

An exciting night is in store... though one cannot sit back with any certainty that surprises will all pleasant.

Tom May (Tom May), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Rageh Omah's at Bethnal Green, shows how rough it could be.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there any talk about who might possibly take Bethnal Green from Oona King? Galloway or the Tory? Is it actually likely to be a three-way contest?

Tom May (Tom May), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

is that loony TV contest winner running in Folkestone?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know much about that one (in Wales), but from what I've heard it sounds like what happened in Falkirk a few years ago - sitting member deselected, stands as independant, wins massively.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Are these Lab to Lib protest votes going to translate into the important seats? Or are people just vote Lib Dem when they think its "safe" to?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Dennis Canavan is Falkirk (was West's) MP. But he had been for years and was well known locally... Used to be a headteacher.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

another 5% Lab-to-Con swing - but then again, it is the next-door seat to the previous one

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The exchanges are getting very twitchy. Money isn't settling at all.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

All that's happening so far is that there are swings in safe labour seats... Is that likely to be reproduced across the country?

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

do the exchanges do spread betting on the outcome?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

it sounds like what happened in Falkirk a few years ago - sitting member deselected, stands as independant, wins massively

Something like that happened in Coventry in 92. Can't remember his name, but the Labour MP got sent to prison (or something) for not paying his poll tax. He got deselected, stood as an independent, and got about 20,000 votes, but very narrowly lost.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

If you listen to the pundits, probably not - they are mostly saying that there will be big variations in swing from seat to seat.

Houghton & Washington E declaring...

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour to win with a majority of 77. I'm calling it. The initial jitters are just that.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Blairite Twigg maybe in trouble in Enfield Southgate

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

That is the question... you must remember Labour have put far more resources into targeting the marginals. Yes, so have the Tories... but I would doubt that they will all be 5% swings, indeed.

2001: Sunderland South 3.2% swing to CON.
2005: Sunderland South 3.85% swing to CON.

This hardly suggests that it's game up for Labour.

Tom May (Tom May), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Twigg would be a good scalp for the Tories, considering he is one of the faces of Blairitism.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the swing in seats where everyone knows Labour are going to get in really reliable in the slightest? The first marginal will be interesting...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Houghton & Washington East:

Lab -9%
Con -1%
LD +6%

Swing: 7% Lab to LD

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Reid looks rather like your stereotypical Glasgow gangster. Pointless trivia: he has a PhD in the history of the slave trade in Dahomey.

Is Boris *deliberately* rocking the through-a-hedge-backwards look?

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt, yeah that's what I've been thinking. People will be much less cavalier with their voting in a seat where voting Lib Dem might let in one of the other candidates rather than producing a Lib Dem MP.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

elwisty (elwisty), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I fucking hate John Reid. He typifies that kind of politician that never answers a question, and always spins out the line. What was that about "if the results are as good as your suggesting we'll have done better than Thatcher"? That's not true, is it? I haven't got the figures, but I'm pretty sure the Tory majority in 1987 was bigger than 66.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Presumably when Reid said "we're doing better than Thatcher" it was a spin on "Howard is doing worse than Foot"

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

(is anyone actually watching ITV or Channel 5/Sky?)

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

That is a VERY flattering photo of Charles Clarke. At least 10 years old. Like the signed one of Barry Evans I have in my front room.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Channel 5 is showing the election?!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

in the year 2013 there will a new rule - no ID card, no vote - all votes done by IT, outsourced to a private consortium like Camelot.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Can anyone at all see this decapitation stratergy working?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I just flicked over and saw Freddie Starr going "yeah... I was a sperm donor"

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Barry Evans??? From Eastenders?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

yes in the marginals.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Channel 5 is showing the election?!

Keeps Charlie Stayt off the streets, presumably. Also, five news is a Sky News production now, isn't it? So presumably they'd want some terrestrial coverage of the election.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Channel 5 is going to simulcast Sky News later in the night.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking how odd this 'decapitation strategy' is. What purpose does it server other than giving us all a laff? I mean, that's a good thing, but I can't see how it helps the Lib Dems.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone got very excited after seeing Portillo lose his seat in 97. If Letwin etc do lose their seat, all they'll do is wait for another one to die. Probably in about six months time...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Margaret Gilmore looks like Steve Coogan in drag.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there still any Tories left over from '97 who are in the safe-seat waiting list? I know Rifkind is getting back in at this election - are there any others left?

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Dorset West should declare at 3:00am. There is a UKIP candidate there, so tactical voting may not even have to play a part for Letwin to get jacked.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Portillo's face then was an utter picture of shock !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it's funny, cause Malcolm Rifkind in the same situation in '97 or 2001, can't remember which was quite funny, he just laughed it off... Did quite well I thought.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Hah, there were almost two David Davises on the Haltemprice and Howden ballot.

(I have visited both recently. Howden is a nice little market town, near Selby. Haltemprice is a rather dingy suburb of Hull.)

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Best in show on Channel 4, seems quite apt.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see *why* Portillo was so shocked when the result was declared, either, because for hours beforehand the BBC had been saying that it looked like he was in trouble going by the size of the stacks of ballot papers - he must have known that just as clearly as the BBC did.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The King's Head in Islington! I've been there! It's rub.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Was Portillo in 1992 or 1997? I can't remember... Just that Chris Patten lost his in 1992.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

That girl in the stripey top- I'd hit it.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the King's Head cameraman is deliberately focusing the camera badly, to give you that authentic pub "had a couple of drinks but i'm still sober honest" feeling.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Portillo was 97.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Keighley vote delayed due to postal vote rowing (read: the BNP are kicking up a fuss).

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Keighley delayed due to "security issues" - the BNP causing trouble???

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Jack Straw is properly cacking it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Interesting that Lib Dems are stealing votes from the SNP too.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken Clarke- spitting flames!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Ken Clarke... He smokes a pipe.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes - especially when you bear in mind that as far as Scotland's concerned it's a governing party taking votes from the main opposition.

(xpost)

Favourite Paxo moment so far: "Steady on! It's Kenneth Clark!"

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha!

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Lib Dem's now claiming Wood Green.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

At least it looks like turnout is up on the last election - presumably a sign that not everyone's being as apathetic as people were worried.

(maybe those annoying Timothy Spall TV ads have *worked*)

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

K-K-K-K-Kilroy!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Get in there Featherstone to knock out New Labour Roche ! bring it on...

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

BNP unfortunately.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The BNP are going to retain their deposits in far far too many seats.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The BNP are having a worryingly good night, it seems.

Venga (Venga), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that the same as the tuberculosis tax?

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

BNP - would use the "National Service" workforce for their racist and fascist regime

Consumption Tax - is like VAT but not on essential goods, such as Food.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

British politics has been shifting inexorably rightwards for the last 30 years or so, and this election looks like the clearest reflection yet of that. The Lib Dems are represented as a left-wing alternative to Labour, ffs. Left wing they are not.

Venga (Venga), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

That said, it's the Lib Dems that are making the gains, however small, in all these seats. And that could well make a difference in the other marginals too...

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Do we really need to hear all the winning candidates singing the praises of the returning officer and the vote counters?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Recount may be called at Hove.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

unfortunately it's protocol / tradition

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Keef - no, but considering how established he is a 9% loss is not to be sniffed at.

Labour hold Livingston (Robin Cook returned), Wentworth, and Blaydon. Blaydon is Lib Dem target #63.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Birmingham Yardley to goto Lib Dems? prediction

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Soton Itchen, Soton Test, Leeds West and Hull North held by Labour. Tories may have edged into Ilford North, apparently...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

SNP gain a seat with a Gaelic name.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The Western Isles go to SNP.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Is what Dom meant to say. SNP gain from Labour.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Can someone explain to me how ITV News is consistently 40-50 results ahead of Sky (which is also broadcasting on Five throughout the night - WTF?) and the BBC? Are they just guessing upcoming declarations before they happen? They even have 1 in the OTH column - is this Respect or that Labour geezer who's standing as an indie after being deselected by a raucous gang of fembots? Clearly we've had neither of those results yet cos they'd be Big News.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

CONSERVATIVES GAIN PETERBOROUGH

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I am not liking these 6-8% swings in Lab/Con marginals. Not one bit.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour holds Holborn (returning Dobbo The Dob), Coatbridge, Bradford N, and Paisley South.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

HOWEVER Lib Dems hold Cheadle, the Tories' top target.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, bizarre that... But perhaps indicative of the kind of strange results.

Edgbaston held! (as I just accidentally said on a thread about kiddie fiddlers in Spokane, USA)

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Further Labour holds: Wallassey, Bradford South, Portsmouth N, Sheffield C, Durham N. Tory holds: Bracknell, Hertsmere. Plaid Cymru holds Meirionydd nant Conwy, but Labour hold them off in their top target of Anglesey (Ynys Mon).

Lib Dems take the new Dunbartonshire East; Labour hold Aberdeen South and Pendle.

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

BBC says:

Lib Dem: 59
Conservatives: 201
Labour: 357

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

LIB DEM GAIN HORNSEY AND WOOD GREEN!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hornsey & Wood Green goes Lib Dem! I did that - that was me!

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

That doesn't sound right to me given the Conservative-leaning marginals so far. At least, given that they didn't expect that.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

labour majority of 68 predicted

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

15% swing to Lib Dem in Hornsey and Wood Green.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Barbara (Hoffman La) Roche has gone! There are a few ILXors in the Hornsey constituency, aren't there?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

You'se a Hove: Labour retain that place near Brighton.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

You won't be laughing if Michael Howard is PM in the morning!

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Roche held a crap campaign like a tortoise curled up in it's shell she deserved it !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour holds Islington North, though Islington South is mired in recounting, and Morley & Rothwell.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Although, I still maintain, he did ban crusties.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Also - Leicester West, Caerphilly, St Helens South, Cardiff South all still Labour.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Lib Dems crushed the New Labour tortoise shell !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Edgbaston held steadies the nerves a good deal.

But... it does seem strongly Thatcherite areas in the 80s in the South East are swinging back to the Tories. But it simply won't be enough, if Labour does better in the North West, Yorks and the Midlands. Thus, hmmm, 40-70 majority? anywhere in that region for me...

Tom May (Tom May), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Conservatives hold Iron Maidenhead; PJ Miller will be happy.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Decapitation stratergy is dead on its feet.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Tory Teresa May hangs on to Maidenhead booooooooooo!

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Teresa May retains her Maidenhead. Are you thinking what Im thinking?

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Cos I bloody wouldnt either.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if my mum contributed to the East Dunbartonshire swing. I will have to find out. I think I voted Labour there in '97 and Lib Dem in '01. I can't bloody remember now.

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

(Can I just say I've been loving this thread? Am about to cook dinner while still checking in. :-) )

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Barbara Roche's letter to me read like something by Chris Morris. It was along the lines of "The Lib Dems will double your council tax and use the money to give crack and heroin to schoolchildren".

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 5 May 2005 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

But... it does seem strongly Thatcherite areas in the 80s in the South East are swinging back to the Tories.

That's exactly how it looks to me...

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour hold Rhondda, Hampstead and Delyn. Tories hold Kensington. Lib Dems hold Gordon.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Back from the vote-imism. Very pleased that the early swing is more to LD than Con. We'll have a labour government, no doubt.

Ed (dali), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour holds Bolton NE, Nottingham South.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

It doesn't currently look that way in the key marginals...

x-post

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour also: Streatham, Leyton and Halesowen.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Disappointing that the Tories seem to be doing well vs. LDs in the South though, in non metropolitan seats. However, no proven swing yet. Cheadle went very well for the LDs indeed... Tory target No. 1 of all...

Tom May (Tom May), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that I don't think we'll have a Labour government, but it's looking fairly sketchy in Thatcher territory.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Judging by the BNP results there's a lot of racist scum in Yorkshire.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Far too big a BNP vote in keighley for me.

Ed (dali), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just got back from the pub where we've been weeping with laughter. Anybody want money on a Tory government this side of 2020?

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Racist Griffin got 4240 votes

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour holds Keighley, Ilford S and Bury S. Lib Dems hold marginal Chesterfield.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

To all those who told me that Hornsey couldn't be lost to labour, silly billies. Silly fuckers too.

First recount at Rochdale after LD win first count by 441.

The key issue is whether the LD/Lab marginals are real marginals or Iraq marginals, ie, will they become 'what they are' after people have given 'Blair a bloody nose'. The tories have made few inroads into Labour, and Labour losses are to its left. That's a good sign for a Brown government which can move there much more than Blair.

Xpost - held Keighley, and Griffin can fuck himself. Cunt.

Tories can't take Bury South - they're not going to form a government.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is it that the freaky parts of the UK typically vote Lib Dem?

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

It was the song that did it, Martian.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Gwent up

Ed (dali), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour also: Batley, St Helens N, Pudsey, Stoke C, Ayrshire Central.

BNP get 9% in Keighley. Here comes Blaenau.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Peter Law takes Blaenau Gwent! Bevan's old seat is no longer Labour!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

+17.5 swing to Lib Dems

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour hold Stalybridge, Ogmore, East Ham, Oldham West. Tories take Aldridge-Brownhills.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed x-post... but Edgbaston has been the crucial one: Tories won it by *10%* in 1992, Lab by 6.4% this time...

That alone for me says that the Cons will be nowhere near making enough gains to form a government, or even reduce Labour's majority below 40 say.

Fucking appalling about Griffin's vote... but it's lower than seats in Oldham in 2001. How did they do in Burnley this time? Good I suppose that they were kept reasonably low in my seat, Sunderland South, but I only bet that the Tories gained possible racist votes they might have otherwise, due to Howard's despicable campaign.

Tom May (Tom May), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Peter Law is man of the election, simple as that.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Nye Bevan's seat is probably back to where it was.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom, that's a really good point... That's probably the best way to predict the result.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

H&WG, I hope you know what liberal means.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The BBC say a 76 majority. Which would be a lot better than the results at the moment sugest.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

My 'x-post' was relating to one further up about Thatcher territory! Oh, this is what happens on an election night where things actually feel at stake - unlike 2001.

Any word on national turnout?

Overall apparently a 2.8% national swing to Howard from Blair. Not actually that great for the Tories; Hague got 1.8% last time.

In many ways this feels like 1992 reversed; the Tories doing really well in targeted areas which are natural Tory stomping grounds, c.f. Thatcherite 80s, but failing to make the key breakthroughs in swing areas. For Bury and Brum Edgbaston, read Basildon etc. and actually loads of more middle-class North-West seats for Labour in 1992...

Copeland's good btw; if the Tories were to seriously be in with a chance of a major upset, they'd take it.

Tom May (Tom May), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour hold Telford, Halifax; Tories hold Bosworth; Lib Dems hold Kingston & Surbiton.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

IIRC, Cumbria actually *swung towards Hague by about 5%* last time, against the national trend. Any idea of the swing in Copeland?

And oh indeed x-post; likewise, I couldn't bring myself to vote for the project... and I'm very happy to see Labour being challenged in the big cities and in the North by the LibDems... I am just a mite depressed about the Tories' tactics seemingly working so well in the South-East and outer London.

Labour (even New) over Tory any day... but I frankly do not mind a reduced majority overall. Blair's power has needed reining in, and hopefully Labour will get Brown in place in not too long. As, remember: this would probably be a landslide with Brown as leader; he is undeniably a trusted figure...

Tom May (Tom May), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold Tunbridge Wells, Epping Forest. Labour holds Ladywood (Clare Short Country), Mitcham, Glasgow N, Oldham East.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

As much as we've had a bloody nose, we've lost seats we never thought we'd win in 1997; we've won our 4th best result ever; the Tories are on their 3rd worst ever. I'm cool with this.

xpost - because anyone in the labour party hated New Labour. I can easily vote for them, as they still represent the best hope to improve the lot of working people. Elections are four way splits between principle and pragmatism, past and future. On two of those, Labour score poorly. But on the two others, they do well, if you still believe, as I do.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

New Lib Dem Gain - Ceredigion from Plaid Cymru.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

If everyone voted like the progressive people of Hornsey & Wood Green - we would have a Liberal Democrat Government.

No Nasty Tories and No New Labour Blairite pseudo conservatism plus meddling interference and incompetence and PR spun and lies.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

6% swing from PC to Lib Dems.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

New Lib Dem Gain - Ceredigion from Plaid Cymru. - Helped by my brother and his wife - another fine result

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

And Lib Dems also take Cardiff Central off Labour.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

GAH am totally annoyed anticipating london results, why do there seem to be so few? ah shit i think i jus saw tony b gettin back in in sedgefield. but AAAAAAAARHGH!

emsk, Friday, 6 May 2005 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour, new or old is a better hope for Britain than any liberal or conservative ever could be. Now is the time to steer the Labour party back to it's proper course. The tories must surely be finished now.

Ed (dali), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour hold: Dagenham, Dover, Camberwell, Clwyd South, Bury N, Alyn, Bristol S.

Lib Dem hold: Yeovil, Sutton, Harrogate.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

YES, I attended University in this seat ! another fine result with personal connections !

That will be the student vote ! nice one !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

God bless the Monster Raving Loonies! My friend stood for them in Stirling in 1992!

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I still consider myself a Labour voter, just one who didn't vote Labour this time. As I said on the older thread about a month ago, my ideal result would be Labour to win with a reduced enough majority to make Blair quit and get Brown in, but still a big enough majority for him to do something useful. This looks like happening, and my protest vote in Hornsey is the big story so far. Woo-hoo!

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The Sedgefield ballot paper must have been huge.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony Charles Lionel Blair holds. The Monster Raving Labour Party rolls on...

NickB (NickB), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold: Wycombe, Brentwood, Chipping Barnet, Runnymede, Beds South.

Labour hold: Amber Valley, Airdrie, Liverpool W, Ayr, Oxford E, Sedgefield.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Is his name actually Lionel Blair!

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Blair's speech here is definitely a keynote one.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Blair is looking old & haggard.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, 1992 certainly was horrendous... probably more so for my parents and so many of their generation and indeed in our region - hit the hardest of all, with Liverpool, by Thatcherism.

I distinctly remember that it was all in doubt early on, but waking up and feeling a real feeling of depression; maybe the first I can strongly recall in my life, aged 9.

Hornsey and Wood Green folk; I take my hat off to you all.

Dave B.: a cautionary word... Labour's share of the vote will be likely around 36-8%. In line only with Harold Wilson's Labour in Feb. 1974, and *below* that of Wilson's small win in October 1974...!
If they got less than 10 million votes in all that will be very bad indeed for a governing party. It does not point to the fact that they have engaged with people enough... they have actively turned off both liberal-left voters, and been hammered by the ultra-right wing campaign fought by the Tories in the marginals. Bluntly put, *they need to stand for more than they do right now*. They are a compromised party.

Tom May (Tom May), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, that should read Beds South West above.

Labour hold Hartlepool, SNP hold Banff.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

THE TORIES TAKE WIMBLEDON FROM LABOUR

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour hold Blyth Valley, Edinburgh East. Tories hold Devon SW.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

See these London things are turning out more Conservative... This is not over yet. I blame the wombles.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Leave the wombles out of this. I blame the Flumps.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

My God... That's incredible.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Manchester Withington is the most obvious example of the student effect yet.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The Lib dems are liberals, be suspicious of the liberals, read your adam smith.

Ed (dali), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

IDS - what a cunt! The Labour party political broadcasts should have just consisted of his final Tory conference speech - "the quiet man...is turning up the volume!" - and the stage-managed standing ovation from all the back-stabbers.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour also holds: Tottenham, Durham City, York City, Weaver Vale, Lincoln, Swindon N.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Smaller majority suits Blair: wolf needs to be kept somewhere near door. Probable bloody internecine war before Brown becomes next leader: hardly a model of Socialist radicalism anyway. Concept of Lib Dems being something other than amoral chancers = hilarious. Odds of any significant change to quality of life = slim as fuck.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Bollocks. Casale was a good MP.

Tom M - you're right - the key issue is whether the 3-5% Labour have lost is Iraq-based or a defining shift away. I really don't know, but hope the former.

xpost - Cardiff and Withington don't really mean much. The story of the election is that Labour win, the Tories make no real inroads (Putney and Wimbledon are Tory seats) and the Libs take seats on a left-inclined slide. Sorry DJ - this isn't a fundamental shift in the body politic. The key issue for Labour is the economy over the next 5 years, which if handled right gives brown the space to win back the LD left drift.

xxpost - holding Slough, as if to prove the above.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour holds: Slough, Leicester East, Liverpool Walton.

Tories hold: Suffolk Coastal, Bournemouth West.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Further Labour holds: Ealing Southall, Battersea (after god knows how much recounting), Elmet, Stoke S, Wansbeck. Tories hold Beverley. Mmm.

Snow saying 'unprecedented 3-way split'. What planet do these fuckers live on? Well duh.

xpost - Galloway's opportunist playing of despicable local prejudices reminds of, well, the Lib Dems in Rochdale. I hate both for the same reason - Labour's national leadership is full of cynical fucks, but their beating street heart is true; with the LDs it's the other way around.

Lab losing monmouth is cool; geeks like me rememberpeople forget how the tories won it in 1992 by 19 votes after losing it in a by-election in 91. Again, Tories win seat they used to hold comfortably. We're back to mid-90s politics.

That tory cunt in Windsor is, well, a cunt. He's living proof of the benefits of a tolerant society.

xpost - Blair really doesn't look like a man with a few years of Pmness in him, does him.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Y'know, you'd think with all the massive silent majority against the EU/multiculturalism/bloody foreigners that Veritas would have a few MPs by now.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I asked my two colleagues at work who they'd voted for today (or rather, yesterday): one for the Workers Revolutionary Party in Streatham, and one for Veritas in West Ham. Not a terribly accurate exit poll that one.

Letwin was going to be my bedtime. I hate to go to sleep on a downer so I may as well wait for the 324th Labour seat (tho' they're slowing up now...)

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Another Lib Dem gain from Labour - Inverness. Their #5 target.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Rebecca (reb), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Blair ignores so many issues !

New Labour in the 00s is for:

ID Cards
Top Up Fees and Student Grants
Going to War alongside Right Wing US Republicans
Income Tax - keep the Tory top level of tax at only 40 %
Lying about increases in Tax
Arrogance and management by smug PR spin
Stupid schemes such as "Baby Bonds"
Building Homes on Green Built Land in the South East and Eastern England
No long term vision on key issues of Pensions, and offering current Pensioners a poor deal.
Council Tax increases year after year

This is not progressive democratic socialism it's New Labour Rubbish !

Back in the early 90s if i said that Labour would be running on the above agenda in 2005 you would not believe it !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ - is that news? The tories were doing that years back. How do we change the voting system?

To the proportional representation system that has ensured Italian politics is the noble and effective field it is!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and anyone what went Poptimism - how'd it go?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

What I love about Italian politics is that it pretty much proves that life can continue quite happily without a government to fuck things up.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold Maldon, Fareham... it's a quiet bit, so back to the Sian Williams paint-by-numbers electoral map. Later, Jules Botfield meets some people playing a specially adapted version of Risk in a shed in Pevensey.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm loving Lord Strathclyde's hard weegie brogue.

Labour holds Brent South, Glasgow South, Great Yarmouth.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Martian, you're assuming that the Labour Party has ever been anything but a disorganised cabal of opportunist wankers. History mostly denies that. It's just the alternatives are worse.

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Lib Dems get their top target, Taunton, off the Tories. And Brent South should read Brent North.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour hold Bolsover, Greenwich, REdditch.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Conservatives get Hatfield. Must have been happy with the railway privatisation.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Balls. David Evans' revenge. Melanie Johnson loses. For shame.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories take another target - #47, Scarborough and Whitby, and the Lib Dem vote accounts for a large chunk of their success there.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

(Quick clarification -- what *does* it mean, this 'lost his deposit' deal? This is a literal deposit of money not returned?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold Eddisbury, Gainsborough. Labour hold Finchley, Lib Dems hold Brecon.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes Ned, you have to pay (what is it now, 10 grand?) in order to stand as a candidate. And unless you gain a certain percentage of the vote (can't remember what that figure is at all) you don't get your money back.

Prior to Thatcher getting peeved at "frivolous" candidates ripping the piss out of her, the deposit used to be 20p.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The decapitation strategy hasn't exactly worked out has it? Where is our 'Portillo moment'?

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Liam Fox holds onto Woodspring. Bugger.

ANd Howard looks to have hung on to Folkestone.

Can someone please hurt the Monster Raving Looney man?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

LOONY LANDSLIDE

Frogm@n Henry, Friday, 6 May 2005 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I expect I'll be in work tomorrow around 11:30. Sod them - I didn't get that promotion and I'm several hours in credit. They can't say nowt.

Be lovely if Howard lost here, wouldn't it? (Not a single Labour gain all night - not even bizarro by-election Brent East).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Lib Dems hold Brent East, Labour hold High Peak, thus giving them +3 attack range for their archers.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Sadly he didn't lose... Dr.Fox, from the Pepsi chart won too.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

reason high turnouts in some of the key tory / lib dem marginals. The tories got most of their voters out.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold Aylesbury, Lib Dems hold N Devon.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm gonna call it a night at Labour 324.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour hold Sherwood, putting them within 4 seats of TOTAL VICTORY. Tories hold West Derbs, Basingstoke.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooh,

Michael Howard claims he will support Tony Blair if he delivers on all their hopes, except lower taxes.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Howard playing the deliver or else strategy talk to Blair.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think that immigration was a top level issue as portrayed by the media and certain parties in the past month.

But I think this is a big issue in Kent, hence Howards distorted view of the nation.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

ANd the Tories take Kettering, their #11 target, with around a 6% majority. THey also hold Congleton, NW Norfolk and Charnwood.

However, West Reading and Regent's PArk puts Labour within two.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Aylesbury, Tory - my parents constituency, bollocks to em.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

ANother Tory gain, this time in Wellingborough (Peter Ebdon Country). THey also hold North Wilts, Richmond, and Boston & Skegness.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

One more needs to fall.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

324 - Staffordshire Moorlands does it (so say ITV).

That'll do. Good night all.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, it's Staffordshire Moorlands, CHarlotte Atkins holds on to put Labour over the top for the 2K5.

Tories hold Chichester.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Lib Dems hold Winchester. Should I go to bed yet? We've still got the pleasures of Bethnal Green to come...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Hold on here, William, I might be able to pick up some slack...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

LAbour holds Stroud and Corby. Tories hold North Shropshire.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm. The BBC live feed seems kinda uninformative.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

you are right, Kent is one of the main entrance points into the UK.

Therefore it has to deal disproportionally with immigration compared to say Nottinghamshire, where Kilroy-Silk was made a fool of.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, bloody Bethnal Green. I've already turned the telly off. One for the highlights reel tomorrow.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour holds: Stafford, Poplar, Brum Hodge Hill. Lib Dems hold Orkney, Tories hold Christchurch.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, why are there a bunch of odd dudes sitting around what looks like the world's largest plasticine Simon game?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no. Galloway's in.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold Banbury and Tewkesbury, Lib Dems hold Romsey, Labour hold Thanet South.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Confirmed, Blairite Ona King lost her seat ! Old Labour Galloway back in

Galloway calls for New Labour to sack Blair tomorrow.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold Vale of York, Sleaford, Totnes, Salisbury, Tiverton.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

George Galloway bucks the tradition of thanking the returning officer!

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha ha:

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Really going this time. Goodnight all, and thanks, this thread's been great. Cheers.

Rebecca (reb), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Galloways party is called "Respect"?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

God, that speech was ugly.

Labour holds Northampton North, Lib Dems hold Norfolk North.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Though I suppose it's as close as we'll ever get to hearing a politician attempting to cover the songs of Prolapse. He's got a point about the other two constituencies that Respect came second in - both safe Labour seats, but they took a chunk.

Labour holds Basildon and Brum Sparkbrook.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Time for a nice cup of tea I think.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

was bethnal green close in the end?

toby (tsg20), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Only two changes in the (non-London) South East so far, and both of those are Lib-Dem to Tory.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and Labour clung onto Medway in the end, with a margin of 0.5%

The Tories, however, claimed Milton Keynes NE, and held the Isle Of Wight.

Toby - think there were just over 800 votes in it.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories also hold Henley, Penrith, North Dorset and Buckingham, and make further gains, taking both Bexleyheath and Gravesham off Labour.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The birds are singing outside! Too late to turn in I reckon.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold West Suffolk, Beaconsfield.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Bloke in our street was standing for the Socialist Labour Party. 172 votes in total, oh dear.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Lib Dems take Westmorland and Lonsdale off the Tories - their #13 target, overturning 6.6% majority.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

NickB (NickB), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, from the initial comment that this is the most boring election in years, it's turned out to be the most interesting since at least 1992 and possibly even back to 1979.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate the smugness of "The Sun"

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The Galloway stuff is gonna reverberate for a hell of a time.

Labour hold Erith, Exeter, Feltham and Loughborough, but lose Clwyd West to the Tories - another Welsh Tory seat, by 133 votes.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm hoping that someone will pick up on Galloway's points about the fact you can vote by just turning up with a polling card. I know there's no official form of ID, and not everyone has a passport or driving license, but it's just not good enough.

Not sure if I really believe his conspiracy theory about the Labour party registering masses non-existent people at multiple addresses for extra postal votes.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour hold Dorset South, Dartford, Selly Oak. Tories hold Saffron Walden, Old Bexley & Sidcup. Lib dems hold Hallam.

James - I didn't even have to do that. I turned up, told them where I lived, then pointed at my name on the register. Then I voted. Bit worrying.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold SW Herts, Labour hold Hillsborough and Chatham.

And in Northampton South (Passantino Country)... the Tories take it, 5% swing.

The Lib Dems have also relieved Labour of Cambridge.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Interesting that it's dawn in London, but not in Cardiff according to the great Mr.Dimbleby, and yet it's daylight here in Edinburgh. The sun with a small 's' must be working real wonders.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, Cambridge is rather impressive - Lib Dems' #59 target, overturning 20% majority.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold Stone. 61 seats remain, of which I think about twenty are in Northern Ireland, so they won't be along till a bit later anyhow.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed... I'm off to bed. Goodnight!

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold Arundel, and take Rugby off Labour. Tony Blair is in a plane being slowly circled by sinister looking vans.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Another student city seat goes Liberal Democrats.

If New Labour were to hold the next election in say early September 2009, then the concentrated student vote would not exist.

it will be interesting to see will they go more than 4 years or even upto 5 years re: the next election

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories take West Devon from the Lib Dems, Lib Dems take Falmouth from Labour, Labour hold Gillingham. Think I'll hop off in a bit.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold Hitchin, NE Herts, SW Norfolk, Thanet North. I'm off now - seats update at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/vote_2005/constituencies/default.stm

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Latest estimate for the majority falls to 70. Those first exit polls of 66 may yet turn out to be right.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Fucking hell. It's 6:20AM and there are Labour Party idiots un-ironically chanting 'FOUR MORE YEARS! FOUR MORE YEARS!' at Tony Blair as he gives a speech at Millbank.

I vote we all turn the next week into one big drinking game where you take a sip when you hear the spin-doctor catchphrase 'historic third term' or 'I believe we have a mandate'. Tony Blair's said these both at least three times already, practically every Labour MP I've heard interviewed has used the 'historic third term' line and even fucking journalists are spouting them. Even the main headlines on the BBC led with 'Blair Secures Historic Third Term'.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 6 May 2005 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but it is actually true...

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 6 May 2005 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait a minute, that Sun frontpage... The Sun basically went on the Blairite anti-Lib Dem assault in the past few days, repeatedly writing them off as "loony left" and without a chance of gaining any ground. Are they pointing out Lib Dem gains as a "always back a winner" stratergy, or are they using it as a warning of a massive evil that needs to be fought?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Lib Dems hold St Ives, anyway.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Trimble has lost his seat to the DUP

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 6 May 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ulster Unionists have lost 4 of their 5 seats announced so far. That's a housing right there. 3 to the DUP, 1 to the SDLP. Sinn Fein have retained their three so far.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently in the town I was born, Harlow, they gave up half-way through a second recount because they were too tired and they're not going to bother counting the votes again until tomorrow. Seems a bit lame.

(they = vote counting people, not the UUP)

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 6 May 2005 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)
