Listened to the first dozen tracks from Sun Ra's The Singles. Hadn't heard them before. So. Huh. I love Sun Ra as much as the next dude, and have a few other records by him, but, to my my rather great surprise, I found that part of disc one that I listened to quite ...uninteresting, mostly. I wonder 'bout the second disc now...

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Thursday, 19 May 2005 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Some music from Ghana (Afro: Fatala-Gongoma Times, if I can trust the album information that comes up when I play this), which I blindly pulled out of someone's mp3 folders--but no, I should simply spend all my money buying CDs of completely unfamiliar music and taking my chances, right? Anyway, I think it's very good.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 19 May 2005 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, are you trying to butter me up? I only like half of Ghana's music!

TV's Mr Noodle Vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 19 May 2005 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Ireelevant Man, I'm not even sure who you are (which I mean quite inoffensively).

This sounds very traditional to me, with fantastic percussion. I found this included in the files of someone on a mostly Latin (but Afro-Latin: son, salsa, etc.) oriented hub.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 19 May 2005 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(Oh wait, do you live in Ghana?)

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 19 May 2005 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but I am Ghanaian (and also author of two terrible Ghana threads here).

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Thursday, 19 May 2005 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(Also, I was trying to pre-empt any gags that might've have arisen from your post following mine by other regulars. Now, spot the irony in telling "The Irrelevant Man" that you don't know him ;-) )

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Thursday, 19 May 2005 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG still sifting through some new stuff and am LOVING the s/t album "Pajo". "Baby Please Come Home" just made my week!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 19 May 2005 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Pajo. Just read his bio - wow. And he recorded everything, vocals included, on his laptop - not shocking these days I realise, but it sounds amazing. My new fave album.

Michael B, Saturday, 21 May 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

No, but I'm not a huge Vangelis fan. (Though I don't hate him or anything.)

I've been listening very fussily to a lot of downloaded stuff and such, most of which isn't doing much for me: the recent pseudo-live Victor Manuelle, Don Omar: The Last Don Live (pretty bleah from what I've heard of it), some other really horrible reggaeton (this must be the real stuff) I pulled out of someone's folders.

And now over to Cano Estremera, but I think I need to put on a palate cleaner soon (something a little avant-garde).

Bringing It All Back Home by Bob Dylan, which sounds better in the morning, esp. on Sunday morning. I didn't like the rambling lyrics last night. Maybe I was too tired to listen to the harmonica.

youn, Sunday, 22 May 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Camilo Azuquita songs. Before that recent Brazilian hits (which sounded pretty bad to me) and recent bachata hits (which got tedious pretty quickly).

Sundar, bueno. I haven't really been glued to my PC today (though it may seem that way), I just keep taking little internet breaks in between laundry and vacuuming. I hate that word; no matter how I spell it, it looks wrong.

An old Amro Diab tape. It's suddenly crystal clear that the worst thing about this is not the cookie cutter drum machine track, or the brief instrumental parts (acoustic? sampled? synthesized?), or even the chorus, but rather--HIM. What a lousy singer. (The chorus is nothing to write home about either.) The little snippets of wedding party style reeds are very cool.

RS (Catalino) LaRue (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

RS (Catalino) LaRue (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I still would really like to do a hand puppet video to this Egyptian music, where the puppets would just be clapping constantly when the clapping comes in, clapping and cheerily waving from side to side.

(Me: I'm still with my rare New Wave stuff, but I'm also listening to some Brian Jonestown Massacre now that Orbit's turned me onto them. What a dichotomy!)

The Kind and Benevolent Oracle of Dee (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

How's that Calla EP, willem? Is it recent? I love their s/t album.

I listened to Mozart's 40th symphony, Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians a couple times, and disc 2 of Duke Ellington's Live at the Blue Note. When I got home tonight, I listened to a bunch of Redd Kross. Now I'm putting on Last Exit's Koln while I download "Uptown Top Ranking" and some Toots and the Maytals.

Sundar (sundar), Friday, 27 May 2005 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Sundar, it's a CD-R release (yes, recent), available through their website. It contains a few primers/tasters from their upcoming album: "It Dawned On Me" (already available as a download. a glorious rocksong in Mission/Church style which I did not like at first but I couldn't stop playing it) and a remix of "Swagger". Then there's some soundtrack-stuff they recently did. All very nice: broody, gently and gorgeous, but unfortunately not really like their s/t album.

Julio, I'm not sure exactly what I think. It was nice and all interesting, quite different from what I'm used to. As I sort of hinted, it struck me as weirdly treble-heavy on first listen. I'll listen some more.

I'm listening to a ton of Avril right now, in case you were still putting any stock in my opinion.

It occurs to me that the first Van Halen albun belongs in that special category of first albums that predict and provide a template for everything the band did after that. (Also in this category: Elvis Costello's first album.) Every good thing the band ever did is already well represented right here.

Batata y su Rumba Palanquero: Radio Bakongo. This is a little difficult to describe, so here's what descarga.com said:

The Network label from Germany is known for recording black music of the Americas, and the music of Paulino Salgado "Batata" is central to the Caribbean coast of Colombia: San Basilio de Palenque to be exact. It is the village known for the Cimarróns, runaway slaves. The peasants are descendants of Africans who escaped slavery, and the Salgado's are the preeminent drumming family in Palenque. The music is vibrant, colorful and uplifting. The seventy-four year old Batata plays percussion like a a person one-third his age. There are influences of cumbia, gaita and porro, Cuban son (Cuban engineers were brought to Colombia to work in the refinery), bullerengue and laments. There's also an unmistakably rich criolla flavor in this music. In the 1960s the chapeta Criolla sound developed: the African highlife became Colombian highlife when the elements of soukous and the tropical Afrobeat arrived in Colombia.

I like this a lot more than most of the tracks I heard on the compilation Champeta Criolla Vol. 2. His drumming is pretty fantastic, too. (I still don't quite understand what counts or doesn't count as champeta.)

Don Cherry 'mu part 1 and 2' - this would be a great starter for anyone interested in free jazz but might be scared by the militant shronking or whatev. words like lovely were invented for records like this!! one of the great duos (ed blackweel on perc). from '69.

ornette coleman 'friends and neighbours' - no don cherry but blackwell is on here. ornette does loft jazz and its a good summation of everything he's done up to '70.

salvatore sciarrino 'l'opera per flauto vol. II' - most flute only records that I have are awesome and this is no exception, some really good stuff going on at the quiet end and sciarrino knows it as this is beautifully recorded.

I saw merce cunningham's dance company at the barbican a cpl of days ago - music by scanner and radiohead's philip selway, v IDM (or 'prog' as a newspaper review described, also its 'improvised' on the spot). I'll post more abt this on the cunningham thread but first I'm probably gonna catch another of his shows, its going on till sunday.

messiaen 'et exspecto...' LP on erato (cond. boulez), its ok but i think the other piece 'couleurs de la cite celeste' is even better. needs more listening.

elliott sharp 'tesselation row' LP on SST - this is the hardcore label's attempt at expansion, its a string quartet but more 'rock': faster and LOUD but the second piece has the strings playing like ticking clocks...there's more to this.

Some Yugoslavian pop music--at least I'm pretty sure that's what it is--I downloaded pretty much randomly: Osman Hadjic, Koktel Bend.

The Fripp & Eno CD came out last year. It's new material, and yes, it's basically similar to the 70s albums. Eno's portion on this sounds less distinctive than his contribution to those older albums. It's good, but so far I don't hear as many interesting things going on, and it doesn't feel as emotionally intense as the earlier material. More strictly ambient in a way.

sundar - some recommendations here - Sun City Girls: classic or dud?

They are 3 piece from the US - rick/alan bishop with charles gocher. Basic rock trio line-up but they are all multi-instrumentalists, i think, they also have their assoaciates with whom they collaborate with sort of AMM-ish.

My first from them was carnival folk resurrection no 7 (libyan dream). I like it and wz fine with it.

richard bishop has released a solo album

Tough to describe what they actually sound like bcz that can change wildly from record to record. I think there's something of the Sun Ra abt them - they def shared his preference for recording absolutely EVERYTHING! They have certainly released lots of stuff of varying quality. The key is whatever they put their minds to they can pull off. To me, it comes down to that they are very good at faking it. They also love morricone and their records can across as a collage of all sorts, just like his soundtracks. The humour is "surrealistic", sometimes it stiffens up their records but at other points its very funny.

so anyway more from the "carnival folk resurrection" series today (their 'numbered' series as i called above). no 4 sounda like a pleasant jazz retrospect, no 2's the dramy draw is mostly piano led, song-like, but the title track is all tibetan bells and pans mindmeld.

The new Missy Elliott.
Hector & Tito: A La Reconquista.

Hating both so far. They will soon be scattered into random 1s and 0s, or whatever happens when you delete a file.

Um, isn't it summer now? Shouldn't we make a new thread? And make it not so Northern Hemispherist by adding "Winter 2005" for mongrels and sheepfux0rs and everyone on the underside of the equator?

Haven't really had much money to buy music so I've mainly been listening to the new Smog and the new Spoon, both great and understated. This morning for my commute I listened to Wolf Eyes "Dead Hills" and then "Drop It Like It's Hot."
