Fox orders another season of critically acclaimed Arrested Development
NEW YORK (AP) — Fox has removed one of the biggest mysteries of its fall schedule announcement, saying it has renewed the Emmy-winning comedy Arrested Development for a third season.
The quirky show starring Jason Bateman has been a hit with critics, but not with viewers. It is averaging 5.9 million viewers this season, ranking No. 122 on the Nielsen list. Already-cancelled shows like 8 Simple Rules, Committed and Complete Savages did better.
But Peter Liguori, the new Fox entertainment president, said he was making it his first official series pickup since taking the job.
“Arrested Development is one of the best comedies on television,” Liguori said. “The decision to order another season becomes easy when you consider its amazing cast, creative brilliance, critical acclaim and advertiser appeal.”
Fox unveils its fall schedule this Thursday.

That's odd, Huck, didn't you see Leon's announcement of this on the thread yesterday?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

advertiser appeal...with club sauce

Huk-L, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

No.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm going to slink off into the shadows like the weird brother of prime rib now.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

That's ok. New thread! Now with 70% less hand-wringing!

slightly more subdued (kenan), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

It's happy enough news to post in more than one place!

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

But what about "Stacked"?

I saw it once and called for a fatwah on all those involved.

andy --, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I said it on the other thread and am more than happy to say it again:
YAY

adam (adam), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

COCKA-COCKA-COCKA!

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

But yeah, when is season two out on DVD? Fox usually has a pretty fast turnaround on these, don't they?

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably it'll coincide with the start of Season 3. If they're smart, which they just proved they are.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, they will most certainly have the season 2 dvd out by the end of August. Half the reason they brought this show back was for the dvd business.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, maybe more like the middle of fall. Fox doesn't start their fall season until November these days.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

But really, the sooner the better in terms of buzz building...

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I want it now, I'm an impatient sort.

Leon Federline (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too...with club sauce.

getarrested.com has said "returns this summer" no?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I still have most of the season saved on my tivo!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"returns in encore presentation this summer"

dang.

Can't find the original AD thread (though surely it's out there?)

HOPEFUL DEVELOPMENT? Executive producer Brian Grazer telling CNN Headline News' Showbiz Tonight he's in talks with other networks about picking up Arrested Development after Fox axed the offbeat Emmy-winning comedy from its schedule.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 1 December 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

Eh. I've heard no other network is interested in picking it up because the cost is too high.

Lars and Jagger (Ex Leon), Thursday, 1 December 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

A proven ratings-loser with an A-List Cast and high production values can't find a network? COME ON!

I've been saying this show is overrated so that I don't have to actually watch it. But I think I was actually right. I'm on the hater side too.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 1 December 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

yeah who couldve guessed that david cross making ironic sex jokes would be lame

oooh, Thursday, 1 December 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

I've heard that when the show is completely, utterly cancelled, there will be a dispersal draft, with David Cross heavily favoured to join the cast of According to Jim.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 1 December 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 1 December 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

yeah dude, you got me, i hate shows about white people

oooh, Thursday, 1 December 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

oooh, Thursday, 1 December 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

i have laughed at huk posts before!! really i just miss custos

oooh, Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

oooh, Thursday, 1 December 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

FWIW, I'm far more fastidious in editing my material for onstage than I am on ILX. Also, I've never claimed to be a GOOD comedian or anything other than rank amateur.

Microsoft to show quirky TV comedy Arrested Development for free
By Elizabeth Gillespie
SEATTLE (AP) — Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT) will run free episodes of the quirky TV comedy Arrested Development through its MSN Video service later this year, making the show available online for the first time.
MSN, the software maker’s Internet unit, said Wednesday it will run display and video ads instead of charging viewers to watch the critically lauded show that was a hit with a relatively small but fiercely loyal audience.
“On TV, Arrested Development created an incredibly passionate and dedicated fan base, and we’re thrilled to bring this series to the global MSN audience,” Rob Bennett, MSN’s general manager of entertainment and video services, said in a statement announcing the deal.
MSN will have exclusive portal rights to syndicate the show’s 53 episodes for three years.
Making recent TV shows available online for free is rare.
Shows have generally gone on sale through Apple Computer Inc.’s ITunes and other services for $1.99 an episode, though those are for full downloads. MSN will stream Arrested Development, meaning users will have to stay online while watching and possibly encounter pauses resulting from network congestion.
ABC experimented recently with making Lost and other programs free through its website. Time Warner Inc.’s AOL has a deal with sister company Warner Bros. to show older programs such as Welcome Back Kotter and Growing Pains.
Arrested Development was cancelled this year after three seasons.
Beside the MSN showing, HDNet will begin airing Arrested Development episodes in September on its high-definition network, which is offered on some cable and satellite systems. It will have exclusive HD television access to the series for three years.
Meanwhile, G4, a network that targets the coveted 18- to 34-year-old male demographic, has acquired basic cable rights for the series for three years and will begin airing it in October.

two months pass...
so i just watched the full first season of this (after seeing the occasional episode on bbc2 recently) and now i know what its all about, ha.

Brilliant stuff, one of the few things on telly to make me laugh out loud and annoy my neighbours. it's just so sharp!

can't wait to watch the second season soon.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 23 October 2006 08:35 (nineteen years ago)

I've properly started watching Season 3 on BBC 2 and eventually caught on to how brilliant this is. Had caught various eps from the first 2 seasons when they ran but for some reason it didn't grab me enough to stick with it. The usual BBC 2 scheduling of brilliant US sitcoms didn't make this any easier. Much like Ste I'm working my way through season 1. Brilliant stuff.

It's odd in the sense that it can be gloriously silly without it being quirky which wouldn't be as good. Maybe quirky is the wrong word but it doesn't have a silly air about it prob. because of the way it's filmed. The handheld cameras and the voiceover go someway to muting the silliness.

Okay, Series 3 (which I've now seen) contains the funniest, and probably greatest moment in television history. It knocks Delboy's bar-fall, Cleese's tree/car assault and all the other so-called 'classics' into a small cocked hat. It's in episode 5 of the series, it's the culmination of all the episode's many plot-strands, and it's simply the most witty, spectacular, brilliantly imaginative, ridiculous piece of slapstick you could ever hope to see.

I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't seen it, but those who have...you'll know what I mean.

Exclusive! Jason Bateman Confirms Arrested Development Movie Talks

This just might be the best news we Arrested fans have heard in a very long time.

Jason Bateman has just confirmed to me that the creative minds behind Arrested Development (Mitch Hurwitz and Ron Howard) have put the wheels in motion toward a major motion picture of the Fox TV comedy so many of us adore. I'm told by insiders that Jason and other Bluth family members have received calls from producers (Hurwitz and Howard) asking if they would be willing to shoot a movie.

"I can confirm that a round of sniffing has started," Bateman says. "Any talk is targeting a poststrike situation, of course. I think, as always, that it's a question of whether the people with the money are willing to give our leader, Mitch Hurwitz, what he deserves for his participation. And I can speak for the cast when I say our fingers are crossed."

Jeffrey Tambor also revealed on XM Radio's the Ron and Fez Show that he has been approached by Ron Howard to see if he's willing to do an Arrested film.

For the record, both Jason and Jeffrey's answers were: Hells yeah. And I hear from other sources that other castmembers were called and that everyone seems to be very much on board and excited by the prospect.

Insiders also tell me that while creator Mitch Hurwitz does not yet have a script, he has a good, solid understanding of what he'd like to do for the movie, and Universal is very much interested.

And so it seems that a few good—wait, no, outrageously amazing—things just might come out of this unfortunate writers' strike, as the creative minds in this town have had time to pause, regroup and think about their dream projects.

And an Arrested movie is a pretty great dream, is it not?

So, let's join our crossed fingers with the rest of the cast, shall we?

if they basically treat it like four-five episodes put together they can make the repetition thing work to their advantage. finally, an excuse for a movie to be "episodic"!

I think most of these Cera holdout rumors stem from this:

http://www.nationalpost.com/arts/story.html?id=756612

What he won't be doing any time soon is a movie version of a certain quirky TV show. He hasn't heard of any plans for an Arrested Development film.

"I don't think I would want to see a movie of the series if I was a fan, anyway," Cera says. "And I don't really see a need for it if you can get the three seasons on DVD."

If they make a movie I certainly hope they keep up the breakneck pace of the show. I'm thinking 4 episodes worth of comedy slammed together rather than 1 stretched out to movie length. Could be (endlessly re watchable) solid gold.

Look at most movie databases, and you'll find no mention of a new film called "Paper Hearts."

But talk to indie film insiders and the unconventional comedy, which stars Michael Cera and boasts other credits from Judd Apatow's talent stable, and you'll quickly realize how high expectations are running for this semi-secret project that's expected to debut at next year's Sundance Film Festival.

"It's pretty much 'the one,' at least as far as festival programmers are concerned," one seller said.

You can't blame programmers or buyers for investing their hopes in the title. It's not every day that the star of two movies in the boxoffice top 25 from the previous year toplines a movie whose rights are available -- let alone one on which word has been kept very quiet.

Those familiar with "Hearts" describe it as part-documentary, part-scripted comedy about the real-life relationship between Cera and his girlfriend, Charlyne Yi, another member of the Apatow acting crew (she played the pigtailed stoner in "Knocked Up"). Like Cera's recent "Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist," music also is a key theme.

Nicholas Jasenovec, a relative unknown who has worked on past Apatow titles, makes his directing debut with the pic.

Mordy, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 08:49 (seventeen years ago)

Michael Cera, dude, even if you don't want to do the movie you really should because everyone else wants to and you will look like an asshole if you don't. Keep in mind you owe your career to the show. Also, take what you can get because you most likely won't be famous for very much longer because you can only play one character and people are getting tired of him.

It's an "Arrested Development" reunion at Fox.

The Emmy-winning series' creator/executive producer Mitch Hurwitz, co-star Will Arnett and co-executive producer Jim Vallely have teamed for another single-camera Fox comedy.

The project, which has received a script commitment, is being written by Hurwitz, Arnett and Vallely. It stars Arnett as a rich Beverly Hills jackass who falls in love with a charitable tree-hugging woman who can't stand his lifestyle or values.

The comedy, produced by Sony TV and studio-based Tantamount, is the first project to come out of the development pact that Arnett inked with Fox in October.

Hurwitz is executive producing with his producing partners at Tantamount, Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum; Vallely; and Peter Principato and Paul Young. Arnett also serves as a producer.

Arnett recently lent his voice to "Sit Down, Shut Up," Hurwitz's animated comedy for Fox and Sony TV on which Vallely served as a co-exec producer.

Hurwitz and Vallely won two 2005 Emmys for penning the "Righteous Brothers" episode of "Development." This season, the two wrote the CBS/Sony pilot "Happiness Isn't Everything," which starred Jason Biggs.

Arnett earned Emmy noms for his role as part-time magician Gob Bluth on "Development" and for his recent recurring role on NBC's "30 Rock." The actor, who co-stars in "G-Force," will next be seen in "When in Rome" and "Jonah Hex."

Hurwitz and Arnett are repped by WME. Arnett is managed by Principato Young. Vallely is with CAA and Brillstein Entertainment.

I want to give it a couple episodes (hated AD after one episode), but it's too much like Arrested Development to not not pale in contrast (seems unwise to have the overbearing omniscient narrator also be an on-screen character, not giving us a sympathetic lead, etc). A lot of funny bits, though.
