so, you're not going to glastonbury, for whatever reason...

what are you doing instead?

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 27 May 2005 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm up for stuff, who knows what though.

Ed (dali), Friday, 27 May 2005 07:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Might go and see Basement Jaxx and others in Hyde Park if there are still tickets. Would like to go somewhere for the weekend (Cornwall! tho Paris ideally) but looks doubtful.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 27 May 2005 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

If there were tickets left, I'd go to Yat Kha and Tinariwen as part of Patti Smith's meltdown. But I'd have to fly to London and find somewhere to stay and so forth.

Ascona Jazz Festival, Switzerland

Hurrah? What *IS* going on this weekend? Everyone I know is going to be away. Sigh. While I'm at home swotting Oracle manuals like a mad person.

There's a BBQ at the Brixton Windmill on Sunday. Is anything going on Saturday? I'd really like something to do so I don't feel quite so much like my new job has killed my social life.

-- PinXorchiXoR

Yes Pink, exactly. I do not need my face rubbed in it even more. Everyone I am working with has gone. There are three of us left in the room (me and two boss-types). To add insult to injury I am working the weekend doing regular rotated weekend work and *ouch* being London support person to the team out at Glastonbury. So ... I'm working this weekend. What fun.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 23 June 2005 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Naturally I wish I was at Glastonbury now but I will settle for Wireless@Hyde Park on Saturday and maybe Brighton on Sunday.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

See, I was supposed to have Wireless tickets but there was a corporate sponsor issue and now I do not. And anyway I have to work. I 'm feeeling really fucking bitter right now. I swear if they all come back and start banging on about how great it was and 'wasn't it funny when' my computer is going out the window.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

My sister's over from Dallas with her husband, so we're up to Chorley for the weekend. Bad timing as I would have loved to go to Wireless.

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Now you KNOW full well that this will be the BEST GLASTONBURY EVAH because we are not there (not actually because WE are not there but you know what I mean). Batten down the hatches for the gleeful reminiscing next week. xpost.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no, no. I've just convinced myself it's a giant Sausage Party and it will be rubbish.

Which is what I've said every year since 1998.

MIS Information (kate), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Not only am I not going, I don't even get a weekend. I'll stop moaning now and actually do something about my work mountain.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Because ... yes! I am now doing the regular work of five people!

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, the one good thing about them not getting me a laptop yet is that I won't have to take work home with me this weekend! Except I will be reading the Big Book Of Oracle on the grass. If the neighbours aren't up to their usual tricks. Can we rehearse in the garden tonight with added extra guitar feedback, so they will experience what *NOISE* really is? Heh.

MIS Information (kate), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Reading Festival

if i wanted to spend my time watching shitty indie bands and sharing my personal space with sweaty hippies i'd stay at home.

aren't shitty indie bands the raison d'etre of reading/leeds?

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only ever been to Glastonbury the two muddiest mud-filled mudulating years, and they were a bit rubbish, so I'm not bothered that I'm not going. I am more annoyed that I'm going to be cooped up in my house revising for the next few days, and will therefore miss the guy from Nurse With Wound playing (although I am still considering skiving off, after all if I get myself off this bloody computer then work will go a lot quicker).

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

the plan was for myself, my friend and her boyfriend (who is now also my good friend) to all go this year. they had a big row, tickets didn't get bought in time. so no show.
found out the other day that he managed to get a snidey ticket for himself to go with some other bunch of people. the snidey snake

manchester i think at the weekend, wouldn't mind going to see Batman begins at some point as well.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa just as i speak i get a text inviting me to a party on saturday, thats manchester out the question then.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I am at work, somehow still managing to act as the control centre between people who are already there/on their way down. I'm braced for an onslaught of "mmm, perry" texts this evening. When I'll still be working. (I know, I know, at least I'm going at all...)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

This is not the thread for that, Matt. Now OFF before we hit you.

MIS Information (kate), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I really want a Wireless ticket for Saturday. Really really. Really.

I'll be watching more Wimbledon and going to a friend's birthday party in Oxford, anyway. Glasto really doesn't hold any appeal for me any more and anyway I've just been to Sónar.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Really Matt, you are not allowed to moan on this thread as I will be a control centre ALL WEEKEND! AND I WILL STILL BE WORKING ALL WEEKEND TOO.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 23 June 2005 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Poor Anna. I am very tempted by the idea of running into the sea this weekend. Vaguely impractical, but so what.

I really really need to buy some summer clothes before I do anything summery. I think I have none. My lovely (cheap) shirt from Primark has shrunk to beyond ridiculously small in the wash, sadly. I hate shopping though. What a dilemma.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Thursday, 23 June 2005 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I have a barbecue to go to on Saturday, perhaps after a little shopping, and there's a viewing for a print auction on Sunday (the auction itself is on Monday).

Uh, rock 'n' roll!

I am entertaining my mother and trying not to argue with my sister this weekend. But we will get bought dinner at some point, so that's alright. And the National Portrait Gallery will be nice and cool.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 23 June 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Having dinner with lovely friends on Saturday, then helping move my grandmother's stuff out of her old flat on Sunday. Add to this some bike-riding (if it's not too wet), some cricket nets and some cold chillin', and I think a fine weekend is in order.

It's not actually Nurse With Wound:

COLIN POTTER + KEITH ROWE + PHIL MOULDYCLIFFE
Nurse With Wound collaborator, ex-AMM guitarist and a lesser-known soundscaper get together in a first of a new series of nights in Nottingham. Nottingham The Bunkers Hill, 23 June, 8pm, £5

i can't wait for the thunderstorm - in London at least.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 24 June 2005 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Me neither, though it's going to hit while I'm walking home, isn't it?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 24 June 2005 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)

According to most weather reports Glasto has already been through the worst. PLEASE let this be the case.

The real fun will be had in London, downpour-wise, apparently.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 24 June 2005 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

It's about 8 hours behind the original Met Office estimates - was supposed to be in Bristol around 9 last night, turned up about 5 this morning.

Has cleared the air quite a bit, but if Glasto has the same weather as us it will be very, very wet just now.

xpost to Matt - it got heavier here in the last hour or so, so it'll get heavier again in Glasto by about 1.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 24 June 2005 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

We're not going to get the thunder is sunny Brighton apparently. First time this year we've had bette weather than everwhere else it seems.

So, no Glastonbury for me. Went to a Techno night last night as a warm-up for the minimal house excellence that is Kliks on tonight with Alex Smoke playing live.

Might spend some time on the beach, but there is also a beer festival in Lewes on Saturday, so that could be worth a visit.

No plans for Sunday yet though...

BBC currently sez:

Glastonbury hit by thunderstorms

Rain hit the site from early in the morning
Lightning and torrential rain has delayed the start of the Glastonbury Festival in Somerset, which was due to begin on Friday morning.

The BBC's Ian Youngs said the weather for the Somerset site turned "from scorching to soaking overnight".

The first band was due on at 1030 BST, but organisers said it had been delayed indefinitely while power was restored to the main Pyramid Stage.

All other stages have been closed because of the risk of lightning.

Festival-goers were getting into the spirit before the rain
BBC Somerset Sound's Steve Haig said: "There is nowhere for the rain to soak away and it's just staying on the surface.

"The communications are down with radios not working and some of the bands who were arriving have been told to stay away because their vans might sink in the mud - the whole thing has been thrown into chaos.

"One can only hope the rain stops soon or this festival is going to go down as a disaster."

The set constructed for BBC Three's coverage from Glastonbury is flooded while BBC Radio 1's Jo Whiley had to abandon her live broadcast after river close to the corporation's compound burst its banks.

"It's a lock-down situation at the moment," she told listeners by phone.

Radio 1 Newsbeat reporter Kevin Geoghegan said he had seen tents floating away.

this quote from Eavis is weird:

"Come on down you'll have the time of your life. Don't be put off by a bit of rain. You'll have the time of your life."

surely people with tickets will go down regardless of the weather. leaving who else? mediawhore blaggers? i didn't think he cared for their freeloading sort.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 24 June 2005 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Written by my co-workers on-site:
Glastonbury delayed
The start of Glastonbury Festival has been delayed because of torrential rain.

The first band was due on the main Pyramid Stage at 10.30am reports BBC online.

Organisers say the start of the festival has been delayed indefinitely while power was restored to the stage.

All other stages have been closed because of the risk of lightning.

There have been reports of a river close to the Somerset farm bursting and witnesses have seen tents floating away.

Coldplay are due to headline the festival tomorrow.

Other acts due to appear include Basement Jaxx and The White Stripes.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 24 June 2005 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I think The Subways were supposed to be opening the Pyramid stage weren't they?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

It has been suggested to me that I should NOT go to the beer festival, since I have to attend an end of term party at my boss's house that evening and probably don't want to turn up already drunk. I have taken this advice on board.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 24 June 2005 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh My Word. Those linked photos. Was it even that bad in '98?

I've just blogged on Blog 7 about Glasto but after seeing those pictures I revert back to being glad I stayed put. I can only assume those in attendance are getting more drunk than ever before in order to stave off the despair.

The Jaxx are great. But I agree with you about Glastonbury on TV. They mostly show the acts I would have avoided - but I suppose most of what makes Glastonbury great wouldn't really translate well to TV - "We're now going live to see Chewshabadoo watching an avant gardé trapeze troupe while he skins up, and then goes and gets and amazing vegetarian Mezze before finding a small sound system inside someone's tent, dancing for a while and meeting a strange couple who seem to have travelled over from Ukraine. After this he will be seeing a group dressed as the Big Brother housemates, who are conducting conversations in unison whilst complementing everyon choices of footwear.... After that we return to wimbledon".

i saw some of it on TV but didnt manage to catch much else over the weekend - the White Stripes looked fun. B Jaxx very good at Hyde Park - too bad Clodplay pipped them to the Kylie cover, Vitalic is better in clubs at 1am really, LCD and Lady Sov also pretty cool tho the latter didnt play 'Ch-Ching' or 'Tango', cuh...as good a non-Glasto weekend could be for me except for the worst hayfever ever yesterday whilst sitting atop Devil's Dyke.

But you do know that you, Nick, Matt and Ronan are never allowed to be in the same place at the same time or the world will explode?

Funnily enough, this exact point was made on Saturday night.

I hope it floods and there's a river going right past your hotel door. And that the stadium gets struck by lightning. And that Coldplay play.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 11:54 (twenty years ago)

hopefully watching England in the next round, going to a wedding, *really* hopefully playing a bucket load of GTA Liberty City Stories that should come out for PS2 this Friday.

(i would be doing all this even if Glastos was on)

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 11:57 (twenty years ago)

Arctic Monkeys are actually playing Berlin this Saturday. Not worth the 30 euros or whatever it is to go heckle them though.

At around that point I may well start wishing I was at Fabric dancing to the electrohouse.
