I haven't a clue. I use whatever's on offer at T3sc0, but this is clearly wrong.

Has anyone else ever experienced a random miasma of spray on deaodorant along the st, but with no cause in sight? Just sometimes as I rove the town i find localised areas that reek of cool charm, lynx or impulse and I wonder if in another parallel universe a deodorant factory exploded.

Menelaus Darcy (Menelaus Darcy), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

has anyone ever put on too much and burnt your fucking armpits? i have.

I think I might have said it before, but Lynx Africa turns me onnn. Alan Partridge's deoderant of choice. What a freak I am.

NEVER USE LYNX, thats my only rule. I dont know how they make it so bad, but gawd its awful. I had to not so subtely buy my other half a nice deo and throw the lynx out so he wouldnt use it.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

My flat mate gets horny over the smell of lynx, a pavlov's dog effect. He associates it with going out and scoring manflange. Lynx africa, universally recognised as the smell of lurve

Wildcats are meant to be pretty stinky, aren't they? Axes, being made of wood and metal/flint are not.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

the arm & hammer sticks you get in the states. i always buy about 12 of them whenever i visit. you can put it on, go out, not get home, wake up in a dumpster and still smell alright in the armpit area. seriously, it lasts for days.

stelf)xxx, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

i'm not an anti-perspirant sort of girl & i have discovered the wonders of lush deodorant...the sandalwood one. it's so lovely. and it works! most "hippy" deodorants don't work that well for me, but this one does.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

AXE - mighty, manly, gleaming blow of death to all odour.
LYNX - sinewy, catlike, sexy claws of death to all odour.

Branding falls down once you realise that either way it STINKS LIKE THE DEVIL'S KNOBCHEESE. I feel sick just thinking about it.

Search: a nice non-scented roll-on pls. Most male spray deodorants make my eyes sting and run, which COULD be a good pulling technique as I wouldn't be able to see if you were ugly.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

a lot of people i know really like fcuk spray...i can't remember if #1 or 2 is more popular, but anytime anyone goes overseas, they always ask for it.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

blount OTM. also never ask anyone to pick up deodorant for you because if you want Gilette Gel, they will invariably buy Old Spice and you will have to throw it out, or smell funny for months.

I'm not label-conscious, but I've used women's deodorants for quite some time now. All the men's deodorants I've tried have this irritating, EXTREMELY STRONG AND MASCULINE smell. Do the cosmetics people think that in order to be a man, you have to reek like motherfucking Fabio (cf. aftershave)? I'd rather emit as little chemical odours as possible.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

Lupton Pitman (Chris V), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

anything "natural" is usually rubbish - this goes for deodorants, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, detergents and food.

stelf)xxxx, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

I've used women's deodorants for quite some time now.

I'd have been surprised if it had been any other way tbh.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

i cannot wear it

ai lien (kold_krush), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

is lynx really so bad? it seems just the same as all the rest to me, and does work pretty well to stave off odour, though I am not a particularly bucket sweating guy.

I try and get a present of a nice roll on deodorant where possible for birthdays/xmas etc from a member of the family. I think all deodorants smell better in roll on form, currently I have ALLURE Chanel pour homme which my Dad got but didn't like. it does the job ok.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Am I that predictable, Mark? ;)

Yeah, I always use roll-on too... It's handier to apply, and doesn't leave a cloud behind, plus it's environment-friendlier. I can't see any good reason for using a spray.

the tom's of maine deodorant, I think it's the 'natural' scent, works for me and smells lightly of coriander. Their toothpaste is great too. I'm really sensitive to all the heavily-scented chemical non-natural stuff, it makes me gag and frankly smells worse than armpits anyway.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Ed and Tracer, I hope you wash your pits AT LEAST twice a day if you don't wear deodorant. Because otherwise you will smell which is horrid.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 28 July 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

Neither Ed nor Tracer smell precisely because they scrub well every day.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 28 July 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

I think different people sweat in different ways and at different potencies. The one time I forgot to put on deoderant I felt so rank by lunchtime I had to do a runner to Superdrug for some wipes.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 28 July 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

What you're smelling is the crap you put in your armpits in the first place. I've tried using deodorant now and then and by the end of the day it just becomes the most rank odor because it's this foreign substance in a cloistered space. If you shower in the morning you won't smell.

carbon (carbon), Thursday, 28 July 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

not wearing deaodorant does not make you smell immediately. i don't wear it to stop smelling bad, i use it to stop sweating and having unsightly wet patches on clothes. i'd like to be able to get away with not ewaring it and quite frequently don't in the winter. have a decent shower/bath and you really don't need to worry about reeking to high heaven, coz you won't.

stelf)xxxx, Thursday, 28 July 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

If you shower in the morning you won't smell.

Not true. I don't get much BO but I know that by the end of the afternoon I have to keep my arms by my sides if I've forgotten to put on deodorant. It's not a *horrible* smell, like 2 day old BO, but it's a bit too pungent and musky to be acceptable in public. If, however, you don't care that other people might find you a bit repulsive, then by all means, knock yourself out.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 28 July 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

I showered in the morning the day I forgot my deoderant, therefore it cannot have been deoderant I was smelling.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 28 July 2005 10:14 (twenty years ago)

You think one shower can get rid of that stuff? Or that the natural sweat mechanisms will re-adjust in one day? No, you have to ween yourself off that stuff.

carbon (carbon), Thursday, 28 July 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

Nah. When I was a teenager and my hormones were raging, I started to wear deodorant because every day I was noticing more and stronger "natural" smells. I couldn't stand worrying every single day that my sweat was noticeable to others - call me vain but I don't want people backing away because I can't be arsed to do something about my pong.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 28 July 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

How did people live before deo? Did its invention lead to the appearance of ever stronger odors or were people so used to the smell that they did not register it? Discuss

C J (C J), Thursday, 30 March 2006 10:59 (twenty years ago)

About 10 years ago I used really harsh Speedstick shit that burned my tender armpit skin. Since then I've had a sensitivy that only allows me to use Tussy, which is a gentler though less effective deoderant.

ihttp://www.medshopexpress.com/048089.html#

It's really cheap, but harder to find than other brands so when I am in the Walgreens in the Loop that sells it I stock up.

You think one shower can get rid of that stuff? Or that the natural sweat mechanisms will re-adjust in one day? No, you have to ween yourself off that stuff.

No way. My dad has never worn deoderant or antiperspirant and he can get rank. Same with my brother's father in law. Perhaps after some time you will adjust to your own stench and think you don't stink, but dollars to doughnuts you do to other people.

Tom's of Maine gave me this weird swelling under my arms that hurt!! WTF, I started using it because my old-fashioned toxic brand would periodically irritate my skin. I tried another crunchy brand that didn't cause a reaction, but did nothing for the stank. Back to Old Spice.

timmy tannin (pompous), Sunday, 2 April 2006 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Kiss My Face hippy brand. works good. anti-p. are vile

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Sunday, 2 April 2006 16:57 (twenty years ago)

If I skip deodorant altogether, I get stinky. If I use strong chemical products, they exacerbate my tendency to get armpit stains on my t-shirts, plus they irritate my skin. The Toms of Maine stuff (unscented) is the best compromise I've found, although I haven't been through a hot summer with it yet. (The "Kiss My Face" brand does nothing for me.)

VILE PITLICKER

smokemon (eman), Sunday, 2 April 2006 21:04 (twenty years ago)

I found pitstains to be a function of climate, not deodorant, which really surprised me. I lived in Miss. with no problems, moved to Calif. and ruined lots of t-shirts over 3 1/2 years, then moved back to Miss. and the stains quit happening. I guess the air was so dry in CA that sweat dried immediately, leaving more concentrated salt deposits. Here in the Gulf area, once the heat sets in you're vaguely damp all over, all the time. (Today is as desert-like as it gets here, at 48% humidity.)

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 2 April 2006 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Interesting. But I think it's a function of both, because I've gotten more wear out of my t-shirts since switching deodorant brands. Although, hmm, it has been an unusually damp winter...

(The real key is to buy cheap t-shirts and replace them frequently. And, when wearing more expensive garments, to wear a t-shirt underneath.)

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Sunday, 2 April 2006 21:37 (twenty years ago)

s: deoderant, d: anti-perspirant
I'm not doctor, but my theory is that stuff is trying to get out for a reason!

w/r/t toms of maine: I really like the texture and smell of the woodspice variety. I hate the white and flakey or wet and goopy deorderants. I had my doubts about the efficacy of hippy deoderant, but I find it works just fine. Granted I am somewhat tolerant of B.O. I sort of like a ripe scent (depending on its particular qualities, of course), it's when it turns that things get gross. I think my reaction to someone's B.O. can be more central to my over-all feelings toward them than I would like to admit.

Also, whoever said their mouthwash is more for drinking, otm. The j/a/s/o/n mouthwash w/clove is a really good non-sickly sweet/alcohol-y mouthwash. Conversely, j/a/s/o/n deorderant does not work.

I can believe arm & hammer is good---I like their toothpaste. No gimmicks, no weird tastes or colors, just straight up cleanin!

emilys. (emilys.), Monday, 3 April 2006 00:18 (twenty years ago)

If you have an all white T-shirt you can boil it and soak it for a long time in OxyClean and the stains will go away. It's not as easy as just throwing it in the wash, but if you don't want to replace the shirt it's worth the effort.

Daddy's Little Duder (unclejessjess), Monday, 3 April 2006 03:33 (twenty years ago)

just talking to friend. it seems all her male friends like the gliding/smooth/gely kind of deodorants. not the actual gels ones that come out of the holes - she says her male friends hate those. and no one seems to really like the invisible solids either. this is all exactly how i feel.

but what we're wondering is, why is it so hard to find the gliding/smooth/gely ones? i feel like the only ones i know of are Old Spice, Speed Stuck, some of the Bruts (which i NEVER find), and this random one called Rexona or something.

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

i just always find the invisible solids and the gel ones now, i feel like they're phasing the Old Spice/SpeedStick genre out!

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

I LOVE funk butter!! It's natural and it totally works like no other. Plus, you can't argue with a name like that...

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

It's a cream deodorant, so you just rub it in.

rrrobyn, Thursday, 2 August 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

ha i dunno i think i rly prefer not getting it all on my hands. and there's something to the GLIDE action that is very pleasing to me

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

It's not messy! I swear! Once you get the hang of it, it's totally fine. It's also BY FAR the best natural stuff I've ever used.

sweet tater, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

One of the most annoying things about being back in NYC for the summer is that I am back to wearing deodorant again. Sigh.

Casuistry, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

Like, I just went through a stick! I've had the same stick of deodorant for years, but now I go to NYC and woof it's gone. I got a new stick for my birthday. Tom of Finland's unscented. It's OK, but.

Casuistry, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

Are you sure this is Tom of Finland's and not Tom of Maine's? Because I think 'Tom of Finland's' would just smell of spooj and manflop.

Abbott, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

Well, that is the joke, yes.

Casuistry, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

Oh man, okay, bcz that's the kind of thing I would honestly get mixed up about, leading to mockery.

Abbott, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

tom's of maine never ever worked for me.

sweet tater, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

u know, i used to love their gingerMint toothpaste, but i really didn't feel like it was like, CLEANING, my teeth. i felt like i was just putting batter in my mouth or something

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, tom's of maine is weak. I'm not crazy about the toothpaste, either.

kenan, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

and believe me, you do NOT want to use the Tom of Finland toothpaste.

kenan, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

also, what exactly is "manflop"?

kenan, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

that is the best question i've heard all day.

sweet tater, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

Kenan, next time I'm in Chicago I'll show you.

Casuistry, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

Also I use the Tom of Wherever's fennel toothpaste usually. (Someone gave me a bunch of spearmint so I'm working through that these days.)

Casuistry, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

I've heard it's a lovely "after dinner" toothpaste.

sweet tater, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

well cuz it tastes like dessert

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

burt's bees toothpaste is pretty good (not sudsy but i like that)
i was using anise toothpaste from green beaver and then bought the cilantro-mint flavour and it is okay but mostly a bit weird

rrrobyn, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

I think fennel is too mature of a flavor for me to classify it in the dessert category.

sweet tater, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

The great thing about Tom's toothpastes is that it doesn't taste like your applying sugar directly to your teeth like mainstream toothpastes do.

Casuistry, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

I totally agree about the sugar thing. I think I'm currently using some kind of natural toothpaste but it's a gel instead of a paste. maybe nature's gate? The last tube I had of tom's was maybe the cinnamint...

sweet tater, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

That Funk Butter looks amazing, and contains my current favorite ingredient baking soda. Also, plant fibers? Have to try it out. WTF, it comes in 3 "flavors"? Hahaha!

Jaq, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

lol well fennel yes, but some of the other toms really taste like a baking something or other

fennel, damn i've never heard of that

omg i really can't do gels. i'm a DIE HARD colgate paster

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 August 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

i can vouch for the unscented & the black cedar fig funk butter. those are the two I've used. my co-worker bought the coco-mango & it's smells too tropical beach for my tastes.

sweet tater, Thursday, 2 August 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

I use my body's own natural deodorant.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 2 August 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

I am still laughing at spooj and manflop. Played by Alan Arkin and Elliott Gould.

I don't usually bother with deodorant. I go out for a walk in the morning, have a shower when I come home, see nobody all day long, who am I trying to impress? I only put it on when I'm going somewhere. I use this one:

Mitchum ROCKS. we don't have those ads in the uk though - in fact, we don't have any ads for Mitchum at all.

Oh wait, yes we do: "So effective you could even skip a day" (YOU FILTHY DIRTY STOPOUT SLAAAAGS, PITY THE DEODORANT DOESN'T COME WITH A FREE SPARE PAIR OF KNICKERS AMIRITE?)

okay but my impression has always been that it's kind of MILD, you know, and i don't want my deodorant to like ear off.

can u clarify?

Surmounter, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

Mitchum is stronger than most. It has 18% of whatever is anti-antiperspirant bit compared to most brands 15-16.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

In the UK, mitchum is (sold as) the strongest non-prescription stuff on the market, for the super-sweaty/stinky. I am potentially both of these, and I've never found anything to beat it (which is not to say it's flawless, but it's still the best I've used).

CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

Me too. :( (sad face for being one of the super-sweaty)

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

really?! i'm totally surprised. i really always tought it was like milder for some bizarre reason. i must try it b/c i've always loved the consistency.

buying deodorant makes me feel like a sex offender. it's all aimed at people who want to trick girls via pheremones into sleeping with them. you'd think it was made for spraying at people's eyes to incapacitate them.

so i started getting deodorants that smell like fruit. the only problem is that they don't use enough chemicals to be sticky. or they come in stick form. which is like putting lip balm on your body.

i only get that with some. you used to be able to get normal deodorant and anti-perspirant deodorant, and as far as i can tell the latter is something that glues your pores and glans shut so that you absorb and cannibalise your sweat. but now it just seems to be the latter kind that's available.

Tom's of Main long-lasting (you must get the "Long-Lasting" or you will smell like the parking lot at a Dead show within an hour) apricot works pretty well and makes my arm pits smell like fruit! I still use srs bznz antiperspirant in the summer, though, because I'm a professional woman and I can't be smelling like arm pit at work.

Dan Seals Memorial Nickname (Jenny), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 12:25 (seventeen years ago)

I always use women's deodorants. I hate the way almost all men's deodorants have this really strong, (supposedly) masculine odour. Women's deodorants are usually much more neutral, the odour is barely noticeable, which is what I prefer.

I'm a big fan of Certain Dri. It's an antiperspirant that you put on before you go to bed. After you've been using it for a while, you can cut back to putting it on every three days and it still works better than anything else I've tried. (I use it almost every night anyway because I'm horrible at keeping track.) Plus, it's unscented, which is nice because I've always hated smelling like artificial fruit/flowers/whatever.

There is only one answer to this problem - a little tub of cream called Trust. It doesn't stop you sweating but it stops the sweat from smelling. You spread a small amount of it under your arms and it lasts for days.

i usually don't care too much about particular brands or products but i have to say, gillette cool wave deodorant is actually pretty awesome

http://i.imgur.com/qRI6bJz.jpg

through the years i have received several unsolicited compliments about the way my armpit area smells. i usually follow up on these compliments by noting that if someone else can smell my deodorant, i probably have too much on (similar to what word on the street is about cologne/perfume), but i am always reassured that no, it's not like that, it's just that gillette cool wave has a nice smell which is surprisingly refreshing even after a long day in the sun.

every single deodorant i've ever used makes my underarms itchy - i use it anyway cos itchy is better than stinking - but it is a source of frustration.

many brands give me an itchy rash too. some of the others actually make my sweat stink more in a very thick chemically way, like I am suddenly oozing petrol from not just my underarms but all my pores, it's p. gross

Sure (iirc) always did this to me and a couple of years ago Dove changed their formula and started doing it too. v. much hoping it doesn't happen to Nivea so I have to ask myself whether natural stink beats weird petrol stink beats itching, for me

the only difference I could see between the old and new Dove ingredients was tocopheryl acetate but apparently this is just vitamin E and nobody else on the internet has a problem with it (plus it's in other things I have no problem with) so ???

more information than you ever wanted about my armpits

I must say that I kinda like how Old Spice has thrown all caution to the wind and gone for full-metal campy metabranding. Currently I have the kind that says "prepare to be kissed on the beak of man power."

I know it's corny, but jesus, it's just deodorant. Most are interchangeable and one might as well have some fun with it.

forbidden fruitarian (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 8 September 2015 15:15 (ten years ago)

Mine may be the same, the package commends me with "For guys with swift minds". Advertising content on website is:

When Hawkridge tilts its head back, opens its razor-sharp beak and screeches, “KEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKKK” what women hear is, “Here is a man who desires endless face touchings by the smoothest, softest, tenderest, most sanitized hands imaginable, and you are the woman with those hands.” And then all of that happens just like Hawkridge kind of said.

Sadly, it does not make me feel like an /r/enlightenedbirdman.

i dabbled in "hawkridge" too but these days i go for "swagger". the best way of describing the semiotics around the "swagger" brand (and all these labels have gone way past deodorant, at this point; there is swagger and hawkridge and WOLFTHORN everything) is probably to note that every time i look at the bottle that says "SWAGGER - GEL DOUCHE" i laugh. but i needed some swagger.

like calstars I won't knowingly spread metals on my skin and I have had trouble finding a deodorant that works until just last week when I bought some knockoff AXE spray from the dollar store and that shit works CRAZY well. no it is not a refined nor sophisticated scent, but they (it's called Powerstick or something) make like 15 different scents so just find the least offensive one. i think it might be the alcohol in the spray, which I guess is not in such high concentration in sticks/gels.

also i do not really mind the smell of b.o.? and in many cases i find it attractive. though tbh i think a b.o. i find attractive correlates w/ people i find attractive

marcos, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 19:56 (ten years ago)

carl, actually there is another way to check. if you have the abcc11 gene that prevents you from stinking, you will most likely have dry earwax

same, v slight b.o. is nice

idk if i have that gene but i seriously just don't have a smell. i'm a cat or something. even when i've worn a shirt a few days in a row it doesn't really smell like typical b.o., just slightly animalic and stale.

hello, it me (clouds), Wednesday, 9 September 2015 20:05 (ten years ago)

I'm not saying any of you need deodorant. I'm just saying double check whether you're just used to your own smell because you know who you don't want to be? The person who's all "I never wear deodorant! I don't need it!" who smells like a pile of wet gym towels fermenting in old chicken soup.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 20:06 (ten years ago)

Also it's reasonable to keep in mind that as much as you may enjoy the smell of certain people's bo, not everybody may enjoy the smell of yours. If we were all living out on the plains in micro-tribes who use scent to find other members that would be one thing but the odds are good you are sharing a smallish indoor space with someone who may not find your odor enticing.

Just like wearing a shit ton of cologne is rude, so flaunting your bo.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 20:08 (ten years ago)

I'm not accusing any of you of doing this! Just encouraging you to be mindful of how you are impacting your environment.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 20:09 (ten years ago)

And yes I have personally known multiple "I don't need deodorant! I don't smell!" people who were, in fact, very stinky.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 20:11 (ten years ago)

i have an ex who at one point started, er, cultivating his stank. not incidentally, we stopped having sex around the same time.

he also usually wore vetiver oil so the two combined have ruined that for me (prob similarly to patchouli for some ppl)

yea i like a mild body scent and i won't say i don't smell altogether but i don't think i'm excessive

i am most mindful about wearing deodorant during the work week

on the weekends i don't really care since i am just around friends and family

marcos, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 20:16 (ten years ago)

I always use women's deodorants. I hate the way almost all men's deodorants have this really strong, (supposedly) masculine odour. Women's deodorants are usually much more neutral, the odour is barely noticeable, which is what I prefer.

i think that is not true? xp

i've never shaved my pits though

marcos, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 20:21 (ten years ago)

tuomas/k3vin k, dove unscented actually still has a scent, but very light, if you're looking for something milder

Shaving one's pits will somewhat reduce their odor. Hair tends to retain odors. That fact is the probable evolutionary reason for armpit hair. Because odor is often a means of communication, including but not limited to, sexual attraction. Personally, I prefer to wash my pits and not use deodorant. Some smell is acceptable to me, just not powerful waves of aroma.

Aimless, Wednesday, 9 September 2015 20:39 (ten years ago)

there's a forgotten deodorant i wore during a particularly winning stretch of my life.. vague olfactory memories stir up nostalgic emotions

There is also the issue that people with particularly musky BO, while it may not be a strictly BAD smell, it can be very...personal. Like, I don't necessarily want to know the intimate scents of men I'm not sleeping with just because their indifference toward showering or doing laundry leads them to broadcast their musk everywhere.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Thursday, 10 September 2015 02:50 (ten years ago)

I thought I didn't need deodorant for a certain period of my life, not least because even gels that were supposed to be non-staining would still leave marks on my clothes (often vintage, often polyester). But one day on my way to an Easter dinner at someone's family home I was embarrassed by my own BO accumulated from just walking and taking the subway and getting to a far-flung part of the city. So I bought some antiperspirant on my way there and never looked back.

I find deodorant pretty essential in NYC summers, but I can only stand the unscented kind.

I mean we have this combination of heat and humidity and gross air and human density and widespread use of public transit here, just hard to justify not using it.

I tend to use stuff from LUSH. One of the solid bars called something like T'eo which is pretty powdery and one that's like a solidified gel that's like coconut white/grey

Stevolende, Friday, 11 September 2015 09:49 (ten years ago)

particularly musky BO

this is just people who don't wash their clothes. fresh bo is forgivable, musky takes a serious amount of neglect and disdain.

six years pass...

Some discussion of deodorant on the U.S. economy thread, thought I'd revive this so as not to go too off-topic there.

So: I don't wear deodorant or antiperspirant. I did from my teens into my early 30s, and at a certain point I had a discussion with a friend of mine who was like, "Why do you wear deodorant? You shower every day." It was an interesting question and made me wonder if I'd just been sold a bill of goods by the body/beauty industry. So as an experiment, I stopped. And never went back.

This is a totally personal thing, some people sweat more than others, some people probably give off more odor than others, so I'm not being prescriptive. But I actually sweat a fair amount, and in the last 20 years I don't think it has ever mattered that I don't wear deodorant. None of the people I've been in relationships in that time have minded — when I ask, I just get "I like your smell," and I promise my wife would not say that if it actually bothered her. I've even mentioned it to some friends at work, like, "Do you ever notice that I don't wear deodorant?" An odd question, granted, but people always seem genuinely surprised because no, they've never noticed.

I don't think there's anything wrong with deodorants or antiperspirants, but in my years of using them I sometimes would get irritated skin from them. So I'm happy not to mess with it. Just curious if there are other abstainers out there. (Caveat, I do take showers every day, and I often time my bathing to when I'm going to go mingle with people, so I try to maximize my cleanliness for public consumption.)

Pit putty at the moment. I am still on one of the tester size packages. Trying to think what word for package type is, metal screw lid thingy.
Had been using a Better By Nature roll on but couldn't find a refill after finding the container unscrewed so tried this stuff. Found it in the local loose goods store place called The Filling Station. Green place that tries to reuse packaging for the most part but does sell some things in their own containers as well as having a lot of cleaned out plastic bottles etc available.
Think after this I will try another flavour or scent of the same stuff. Since there are 3 or 4 varieties.

Stevolende, Friday, 17 September 2021 07:37 (four years ago)

company is called Faith In Nature.
Looks like Pit Putty call at least the full size units tubs but thy come in these little metal pot things with screw on lids that are like what you get snuff or something in, maybe popular in cosmetics. small circular things where teh screw on lid takes up about half the height.

Potassium alum - it's the bomb. Seems to be more or less innocuous. A stick costing £4 lasts me around six months. Just use it on freshly clean and wet pits for effectiveness.

Why is it so hard to find an unscented stick? Most stores seem to carry only one brand; my Target never has any.

Hideous Lump, Saturday, 18 September 2021 07:24 (four years ago)

i use Arm and Hammer essentials unscented. it works well on me and I've really noticed a positive difference with skin irritation.

peace, man, Saturday, 18 September 2021 09:55 (four years ago)

i stopped using a long time ago but i tried the crystal but that can clog your pores too so just use a good cleaning when you take a shower!

I'm among the majority of adult humans for whom soap + water works just fine to keep armpit odors down to acceptable levels for acceptable periods of time between applications.

it is to laugh, like so, ha! (Aimless), Sunday, 19 September 2021 03:45 (four years ago)

I don't have a washing machine or lots of 'cllset' space so I prefer it if my clothes can go a bit longer between washes. Also depends on what kind of activities you do, the "majority" of humans are going to be a bit stinky if they do physical work.

LTJ Jenkem (Noel Emits), Sunday, 19 September 2021 09:25 (four years ago)

I wish I could stop using deodorant/antiperspirant, but as someone whose job it is to wave my arms around in front of a bunch of eagle-eyed middle-schoolers all day, I feel like I need the antiperspirant at the very least.

Lily Dale, Sunday, 19 September 2021 15:11 (four years ago)

antiperspirant gives me rashes until I find the kind without aluminum, and 90% of the time i'm buying it, I'm in a convenience store and left to pick from waht they have.

still use it but one time the rash got so bad that I was doing a production of Assassins (rehearsal) and one of my castmates said "YO, Rob, u ok? what's going on in your pits there?"

my motto is let the sweat go free wherever thee may be. But I don't go on public transport and am rarely in confined indoor spaces and mainly I just don't care anymore.

calzino, Sunday, 19 September 2021 15:48 (four years ago)

My substitute deodorant arrived, and I like it well enough— Weleda Sage 12hr. Pretty inexpensive, too, and works reasonably well. No alum or any crap!
