Never in my wildest dreams did I think he would have lasted this long as a t.v. entity. Subway: please cease and desist.

Nor Jared Harris, then?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I like that face he makes in the new commercial when FRIED chicken is mentioned. I CAN'T BELIEVE SOMEONE WOULD FRY CHICKEN.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

(Defense, commence):

Come on, he's a human being. He's trying to help people be healthier any way that they can. If that means eating the same thing every day because they have no idea what foods won't make them weigh 500 pounds, he's helping people. And helping uncreative people who haven't been properly taught how to feed themselves isn't indefensible, right?

That said, I wish he would disappear pronto.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

i wonder if subway's marketing team is crap b/c jared isn't that marketable. does anyone sympathize with him? feel inspired by him? like him?
plus, it's been a LONG time since his initial weight loss ads were around .. .. .. do we have generations of young'uns that don't even know who he is?!

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

the subway account is a bit of a joke in the adworld -- they are renowned for steadfastly clinging to jared as their spokesperson. any slight deviations they've made from him in the past have resulted in analagous sales dips, so there's something to their conservatism.

He's less annoying when he's telling his own story than when he's acting in those MMM-I-LOVE-EATING-SUBWAY-SANDWICHES-SO-MUCH commercials. however, that's not really saying much...

I for one, would love to get a good paying job like that. You can't blame him. He went from being a tub of goo, to being reasonably fit, and now he gets paid to say he likes a product. God, milk that for all it's worth Jared...

Draw Tipsy to see if you give a shit about art (Dave225), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Milkmaid utterly OTM. Jared OTM about why fried chicken is "bad." My main problem with Subway is that they don't state clearly enough that if you want Jared-like success, you need to hold the cheese, mayo, oil and soybean oil based sauces.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

If Jared manages to convince those Senators he's testifying in front of to outlaw fried chicken then I will destroy him.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Subway is deceitful in the grams of fat: "Addition of cheese or condiments may alter fat content..." Who doesn't add some kind of condiment?

Well, you could have mustard. Also, many condiments/sauces (ketchup, BBQ, salsa) are fat-free (but not calorie free).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

What's great about that photo in the ad is that you know that was the best shot they got out of that session. The rest of the pictures made children cry.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

In Jared's defense: on that Triumph the Insult Comic Dog live DVD thing, Jared takes his zings like a man, while the "Dell Dude" douchebag tries very, very unsuccessfully to retort Triumph, which, might I remind you, is a puppet with a man's hand up it's ass.

Just a moment! Quality of Subway aside, I like Jared, because he has a quality much ignored and passed over, esp. in the world of advertising - mildness. He can't even muster anger at the Chicken Selects. Imagine if every fucking EXTREME commercial were replaced by something mild, like Jared or the Motel 6 guy.

When I was 15-16 i worked for Subway for one year. I gained so much weight from just having to eat there. I think the mayo was seeping into my hands when I had to mix the tuna and seafood crap. The subway smell is a mixture of the bread, and having to chop up all those onions and tomatos, and having to deal with vats of mayo. You couldn't wash the smell out of your clothes. Fuck a visor.

The Popeyes story began in New Orleans back in 1972, when Al Copeland opened a quick-service restaurant called “Chicken on the Run,” selling traditional mild fried chicken to the folks in small New Orleans suburb of Arabi. But business was slow, and Copeland realized that he’d have to sell a spicier alternative to his standard chicken recipe if he wanted to impress flavor-seeking New Orleanians.

Copeland had already been experimenting with the flavorful Cajun recipes he’d been enjoying all his life and soon reopened his restaurant as "Popeyes,” named after the character Popeye Doyle in the movie “The French Connection.”

Jared Fogle, the former Subway spokesman, is expected to plead guilty to charges related to child pornography, a source with knowledge of the situation told ABC News today.

Fogle, 37, gained national fame when he lost a significant amount of weight by eating turkey and vegetable sandwiches from Subway and exercising. He was first featured in ads for the company in 2000.

Subway suspended its relationship with Fogle in early July after law enforcement agents raided his Zionsville, Indiana, home as part of what two sources briefed on the investigation told ABC News was an ongoing investigation into child pornography.

j., Wednesday, 19 August 2015 14:10 (ten years ago)

Between 2011 and 2013, Fogle also repeatedly sent text messages to other escorts, "soliciting them to provide him with access to minors as young as 14 to 15 years," the document said, adding that he would only make such requests after engaging in sex acts with the escorts to "insure that they were not undercover police officers."

The document also alleged that Fogle on multiple occasions received sexually explicit images and videos produced by Russell Taylor, 43, who ran the charitable Jared Foundation. The foundation sought to raise awareness about childhood obesity and arranged for Fogle to visit schools and urge children to adopt healthy eating and exercise habits.

"Obviously, I am extremely shocked and disappointed by the recent developments involving Jared. I am in the process of seeking a dissolution of the marriage," Fogle says in a statement. "My focus is exclusively on the well-being of my children. Neither I nor my family will have any further comment on the matter. I appreciate respect for my family's privacy during this difficult time."

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 19 August 2015 18:08 (ten years ago)

Iirc ive read Jared endured as a pitchman cuz when yer a company reminding people you exist rather than convincing people to try you out, you don't want anything too of the moment - or too popular within a moment - lest you fail to transcend that moment and became dated. That's why Wendy's quashed where's the beef lest people said "oh Wendy's so 80s". So jared was just the right kind of timeless mediocrity - not unlike Dave Thomas in later Wendy's ads. It's probably to wrong to infer too much from it, but the way this story welds the banality of evil and the evil of banality is just so eerie to me. That this creep was put in a powerful position he never would have managed otherwise just by being so generically "okay".

i did like the revelation from some old profile that got new life when the bust happened that jared was this fat guy on campus who had this insanely huge porn collection so huge that he actually rented it out (this is in ye olden days when you would have to rent or buy porn) and the reason he happened on the 'subway diet' is there was literally a subway downstairs from his apartment which he generally didn't leave much.

balls, Wednesday, 19 August 2015 21:30 (ten years ago)

In college during the nascent digital age there was a fat guy in a neighboring dorm who hoarded porn and traded his images for images of cats. Not Jared.

most fucked up part of the story i read about was an allusion to the apparently evil stepmother of the guy who beat him up:

Nigg, who is serving time for a gun conviction tied to a decades-old Arizona crime spree, walked away from fracas unscathed, save for a cut-up hand, but was punished with solitary confinement, the site reported.

Nigg is slated for a 2024 release from federal custody while Fogle will have to wait out an additional five years to wrap up his sentence for charges related to possessing child pornography and having sex with underage prostitutes.

Nigg initially served time from 1976 to 1990 when he and an accomplice robbed a Maricopa County motel clerk, two convenience stores and a gas station. He moved to Wausau, Wis., where his father had lived, married a woman and began working at a consignment shop.

When his father died, Nigg’s string of good luck ran out, according to his appeal in the Seventh Circuit court.

“In a somewhat cruel twist of fate, the estate included over 120 firearms,” according to court documents.

Through his shop, he sold two guns to a private investigator hired by his stepmother. The sale led to his arrest and an eventual guilty plea.

nomar, Wednesday, 16 March 2016 18:10 (ten years ago)

what i did hear is that in the first few weeks of imprisonment, in the diagnostic unit where long-term housing determinations are made, prisoners didn't typically know that their fellow inmates had been convicted of. unless, that is, they were sex offenders, in which case the guards would pin up newspaper clippings to the bulletin board

i can think of a few things he's done that aren't, and never can be, funny

Prison violence is a disgrace no matter who the target is.

Treeship, Thursday, 17 March 2016 15:01 (ten years ago)

prison violence is actually extremely lit

I had been avoiding this story and am boggling that Jared got beat up by someone named Nigg (who I really, really hope is not black)

Is he Vietnamese?

pplains, Thursday, 17 March 2016 15:40 (ten years ago)

Violence is bad no matter who gets beaten, the race of the assailant, the name of the assailant, whether the violence occurred inside or outside of a prison, or whether or not the victim likes sandwiches or child pornography or child prostitution, that's my opinion on the issue

del griffith, Thursday, 17 March 2016 15:50 (ten years ago)

cosigned

wizzz! (amateurist), Thursday, 17 March 2016 17:41 (ten years ago)

i don't feel bad for him exactly but man jared fogle has got to be #1 on the "least suited for a prison fight" list

nomar, Thursday, 17 March 2016 17:47 (ten years ago)

I am against the death penalty and do not advocate this in any way but does anyone really think he's going to survive in prison for 5 years cuz I don't

Οὖτις, Thursday, 17 March 2016 17:48 (ten years ago)

i'm not sure but i think he's more likely to die of a heart attack than a shiv

nomar, Thursday, 17 March 2016 17:50 (ten years ago)

also he's in there til 2029 at the minimum, he'd be released when he's in his early fifties.

nomar, Thursday, 17 March 2016 17:50 (ten years ago)

he's going to starve without sweet onion teriyaki sauce

Treeship kool-aid mans into thread with "guys, have some empathy for the child-fucking sandwich man"

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 17 March 2016 18:00 (ten years ago)

i'm opposed to the horrific conditions in america's prisons, what can i say

btw i'm glad i caught you. the other day when i came home my roommate tried to put glasses on his pitbull to take a photo of it. the dog was already wearing one of other friend's plaid shirts. this hipster puppies trend has really lasted

Treeship, Thursday, 17 March 2016 18:20 (ten years ago)

Yeahhh, I guess I'm just the kind of person who thinks that good things are good and bad things are bad. I suppose I'm a lot like Jesus Christ in that way? What can I say...

del griffith, Thursday, 17 March 2016 18:32 (ten years ago)

i don't understand the controversy here

Treeship, Thursday, 17 March 2016 18:35 (ten years ago)

i won't begrudge anyone a bit of schadenfreude about terrible things happening to terrible people, it just shouldn't be institutionalized

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 17 March 2016 18:59 (ten years ago)

yeah, that's fair

Treeship, Thursday, 17 March 2016 19:14 (ten years ago)

right, prison abuse is awful for many of the same reasons that capital punishment is awful. the state shouldn't be in the business of institutionalizing retribution.
