So, yes, the money boys may have their own thread, but there's nothing so far for those of us at the knife-edge of professional (or even semi-professional) football.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 5 August 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

Northampton Town prediction: despite their position as the bookies' favourites, we spend the first four months of the season running around like blue-arsed flies, and conceding four to Rushden. We then make our traditional late-season rush for the play-offs, which we lose in the final. Andy Kirk to be carried off with a season ending injury after three matches. The first team will continue to drink at the Chicago Rock Cafe after home wins.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 5 August 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

I fear for my own team's performance this season. Several years of watching them throw things away has given me a(n un)healthy degree of cynicism.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Friday, 5 August 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

I'm trying very hard not to get my hopes up. It seems like Exeter have managed to sign one or two decent players at our level, we've lost one or two but nobody to serious, the manager seems pretty good (we had the best record in the conference, taken from the day he joined us). We have missed out on the play-offs by one point ad one place two seasons running. Perhaps we can do one better this time.

However, last time I came on to ILx and was all optimistic about the coming season we went out of the League. Brrrr.

seriously tho its harder than ever to predict which eminent championship team will underachieve enough to let a surprise underdog into playoff contention this year; norwich and palace and even maybe southampton have stayed more or less stable post-drop, and the likes of wolves, leeds, sheff utd, reading look like they've got their acts together too

AFC Wimbledon have, I think, reached a league (Ryman Premier) where football is taken seriously, and pro players and sugar daddies start coming into the equation. Despite our big crowds and success on and off the pitch, we still have a wage structure and a sensible playing staff budget, so we haven't acquired any players on "proper" wages (though I am sure some of them are earning up to £200 a week).

Having said that, I've been pleased with the standard of player we've brough in in the close season - I think we've made 10 new signings now, with 7 or 8 leaving. Our midfield is looking shit hot, with two former Conf South captains marshalling the middle with a former Man U and Aston Villa prodigy roaming behind the front two.

Where we have an advantage is that our squad is probably bigger than almost all our rivals - but they may have better individual players. Teams like Heybridge, Billericay and Fisher have all been strengthening already strong squads, and realistically we're hoping for a play-off spot.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 5 August 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

A play-off spot? Haven't you just won every game for the last two years or something?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 5 August 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure about Bristol Rovers. We had a pretty good start last season, then defended well but scored few, so became the entire league's draw specialists, and drifted into the doldrums without ever getting sucked into any kind of relegation battle - which is an improvement on the previous few years. I think we might improve a little more, and if we can knock in a few more goals we could be pushing for a playoff spot this year. I am particularly hoping for our regular good start, since Rovers have three games in London in the first four weeks of the season, and I'd like to see us at our best.

How far do the playoffs go down this season? There was a plan to move to 6 teams in the playoffs (byes for the top 2, single-leg throughout), but I don't know if that is coming in now, or what.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 5 August 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

On paper, Ipswich look a weaker team again (for the fouth year running) but the last few season have seen a year-on-year improvement in final league position, so I'm not sure what will happen. We seem to have signed decent players to replace last years Preimership-bound front two (Parkin and Forster) and have England under-19s star Bowditch pushing on. However, we have lost a goalkeeper of real quality and have brought in no new centre-backs which hardly bodes well for last years woeful goals-against tally.

We have signed a useful looking attack minded right-back called Sito, but he is short on fitness having been a free agent over the summer, but this will do little to stem the flow of goals against us, especially as Wilnis is not getting any younger.

The same can be said about midfield playmaker Magilton, who must surely now be on his final season (everyone was saying that 4 years ago) and it surely must be up to Currie to push on a cement his place as Jim's replacement. We have kept hold of Horlock who, in the absence of the departed Miller, should start every game and be able to form a much tighter barrier in front of the defense than last year. Westlake will be hoping to put last years indifferent form behind him and recapture his 'player of the season' form from the previous year - and we have two interesting young wingers in MacDonald and Peters to look out for.

I imagine a similar story to last year, challenging near the top, but losing out towards the end to teams with more strength in depth. This year, however, does see a stronger looking crop of teams, than the last couple of seasons so my gut says play-offs at best.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 5 August 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

ps looking fwd to the league cup? i'm not

Please beat us! Every time we score a "shock" win in the early rounds of the cup, we go on to have a complete pig of a season. When we just get turned over 3-1 by Southend in a lacklustre performance, we tend to be "there or thereabouts" at the season's close.

The best I'm hoping for is third, really. League Two looks the weakest its been for a few seasons, but that's still nothing to get excited about.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 5 August 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

What is this strange place? Why isn't Peter Schmeichel talking about us anymore? Who the fuck are Crewe Alexandra?

Saints... hmm. Really, we shouldn't do too badly - losing Crouch is annoying - though for £7m? To Liverpool? Eh, worse things happen at sea, plus the strikers we've got left have either already proved themselves at this level (Fuller, think Blackstock scored a few on loan at Plymouth) or certainly ought to. Plus, Kenwyne Jones was apparently shit-hot at Wednesday last season, and really ought to be doing the same again. Probably time for those much-mooted youngsters to be stepping up a bit. A midfield containing any four of Prutton, Oakley, Quashie, Delap, Fernandes, McCann or (gulp) Wise isn't Premiership standard but ought to be bossing the Championship no bother, and at the back... we appear to be roughly the same as we ever were, except we've added Tomasz Hajto and Darren Powell. Yay. Hanging onto Niemi would be a huge plus, but Smith ought to be able to handle himself if he goes.

Basically, if this was our Premiership squad we'd be stuffed. In the Championship, though, the play-offs will be a very bare minimum, and we really should be going back up. The one concern is a certain lack of pizzazz, but I suppose that at this level you can never have too many workhorses on your staff.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 5 August 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

Teh HOBB, we have lost 3 league games in our last 86, but we can't kid ourselves that every time we get promoted we're going to boss it. We won the CCl so convincingly because freak results and the promotion laws preventing us going up after our first season (the teams who finished ahead of us, on 120 and 116 points or thereabouts, are now a) defunct and b) down in level 10 football), and we were able to improve the team significantly enough to be dominant in the Ryman 1st as well.

But that momentum won't be enough to give us dominance after a second successive promotion, I don't think - this season we're well aware there are better players than we have in our division - players who can win matches on their own, and squads who are more disciplined than any we've faced so far.

Also, our most skilful player (by a factor of 1 million) has done his posterior cruciate, so we've probably lost him for the season :(

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 5 August 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad I don't have a cruciate in my posterior.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 5 August 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

I always worry for teams who come down from The Premiership and think they'll walk the second tier. I'm afraid it ain't that simple. Loads of teams will see you as their cup final and put in that extra effort - whilst you, conversely, can assume the "little boys" will just roll over for you and just turn up.

There is also the factor of how easy it is to change a team's mental condition from one that is looking to not lose and pick up enough points to survive, to one that must win three-quarters of their games to go up.

Be afraid, be very afraid!

Still, I wish you all the luck, but I fear Naaaaaridge (boo!) and Crystal Palace are much better equipped to get promotion.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 5 August 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

I honestly fancy Southampton this year.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 5 August 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps you should post them on the crush of shame thread, Mark...

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Friday, 5 August 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

I predict Southampton will never come back up, and that AFC Wimbledon will get keep getting promoted each season until they reach the Conference. Also, if Andy Johnson really is staying at Crystal Palace then they'll come straight back up. Then they'll go straight back down again.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 5 August 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm trying to think if there are any cute footballers (hehe an interesting thread derail) - Freddie L is obviously a stunner, and Rob Ursell (said crocked Dons genius) is a very handsome lad. But my vote goes for Emma Byrne of Arsenal. Cor.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 5 August 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

It won't be easy - it's us, for pete's sakes - but on paper we really should have a strong enough squad to at least reach the play-offs, if only because a lot of these players (Higginbotham, Prutton, Jones, Fuller, Kenton, Quashie, Delap, Wise) have done well at this level before, a handful were very good by Premiership standards, and the rest are either hotly-tipped youngsters or fairly steady hands. The one concern is a lack of x-factor, one outstanding outfield player to lead the side forward. That and the defence, though hopefully Michael Svensson's return should go some way to making that fairly safe.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 5 August 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

As for cute footballers, I've just looked at our squad. By and large they appear to be the type of people that you not only wouldn't kick out of bed but you wouldn't take home in the first place, because that would mean they'd know where you live.

That said, Danny Higginbotham looks oddly similar to Nick Southall. Make of that what you will.

what odds for this accumulator, to win their leagues: Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, Northampton Town, Stevenage Borough ?

Someone ask Paddy Power? or William Hill?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Sheff Utd have consistently managed to deny themselves promotion to the Premiership, I don't see them starting now.

(Cue division champions status for them, then)

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

I fancy Wolves to win the division. They finished strongly last year but drew too many to reach the play offs. Ince is still a good player at this level, though it must be noted that he is a cunt. Ta.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

Play offs Championship:

Sheff Utd [Winners]
Wolves
Leeds
Preston

''as for Southampton - they will rot in the Championship for years - Rupert the Toff want allow Harry to spend the Crouch Cash.

No no no say it ain't so

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

I might be biased, but Wolves will piss all over the sorry likes of perpetually underachieving Sheff U and win the Championship at a walk.

It's the booze talking. Sorry.

wasn't the gentleman picking united for playoff winners?

Ed (dali), Friday, 5 August 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

dj martian, are you suggesting that palace will win the championship?!

seems a bit optimistic. i think we will get into the lower rungs of the play offs, back where we belong. almost get to the play off final, but be thwarted at the last minute.

can anyone tell me about jon macken or jobi mcanuff? the latter has just equalised for us, but i dont know anything about either, and im kinda predjudiced cos they both have funny names beginning with 'j' (yeah i know jon isnt a funny name but i always do a double take when i see that spelling)

also, peoople on the cpfc.org board are talking about mcanuff being a much better replacement for routledge and that makes me angry

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

I fancy Norwich this season, as I often do. They look in fine fettle.

Robinson

Robinson (Robinson), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Macken had a good run at PNE a few seasons ago, which led to him being transferred to Man City for £5m. He didn't do a huge amount to justify that figure, hardly ever starting, and very rarely doing anything when he did. He might be OK in the Championship, but...

McAnuff is (I think) a winger who was in the crop of half-decent youngsters (Reo-Coker, Agyemang, Leigertwood, some others) that Wimbledon had around the time that they became Not Wimbledon. I can't remember what he did since then, though.

Saints' Road To The Play-Offs has started by drawing 0-0 with Wolves (didn't see 'The Championship' - oh god, a whole season of Ally McCoist - but apparently didn't miss anything beyond Theo Walcott being Rather Exciting for a bit), which isn't too bad, and tonight we dropped a 2-1 lead to go down 3-2 to early season surprise packages Luton Town. Vultures aren't circling, but it's not quite the stuff dreams are made of...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Classic Cobblers start to the season: Andy Kirk's already out injured for a month and we've thrown away a win at Barnet.

Boy I can't wait till the Peterborough match.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

McAnuff went to West Ham, then Cardiff, didn't he? He was one of our best players before The Schism, so I'd be cautiously pleased if I were you. He definitely looked like a premiership player, and I guess he's still fairly young.

Last night AFCW played Conference club Crawley Town away. We took a 3-0 lead, and lost 4-5. Crazy game.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:18 (twenty years ago)

what odds for this accumulator, to win their leagues: Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, Northampton Town, Stevenage Borough ?

One English Pound with William Hill will give you back around £5000.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

I will be extremely surprised if Stevenage win the Conference.

Mind you, I was extremely surprised that Barnet won as well as they did last year.

i'm sure everyone is well sick of ian holloway by now but here's his first of the season all the same:

"I told them they should have been in front by more than two goals. That prickly character at Chelsea [Jose Mourinho] could teach us a lot about those things. If two flies were crawling up a wall, he would want one of them to win - and I want to be more like that."

sorry.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

why are luton scumbags?

i like luton, i like their ground, i like their colours, and by rights i should be a luton fan really, genetically.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

I think the people of Luton have to have something to be happy about, so it may as well be the football team. You know, rather than the religious fundementalism and the ugliest buildings anywhere in the world.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Played 2 Premiership rejects, 4 points in the bag. Outplayed Southampton for 3 quarters of Saturday's match and were unlucky to only draw. Palace dispatched last night. Ganea still to return and 3 million quid in the bank. Come on you Wolves.

Zazas Zazas Nasatanada Katzenellenbogen by the Sea (noodle vague), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Luton's ground is a complete hole! not as bad as Gillingham's I'll grant you. Is it true Kenilworth road only seats about 9000 people?

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

Surely Wolves have to careful about bandying around terms like Premiership rejects?

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Nah, we were Premiership rejects last season.

Also, the reason a lot of people don't like Luton is the memory of their chairman's twattish support of ID cards.

Zazas Zazas Nasatanada Katzenellenbogen by the Sea (noodle vague), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

I was quite fond of Luton Town in the 80s - they often seemed to be featured in the highest-scoring match on Sunday editions of MOTD, they ran Everton close in FA Cup qf and sf but didn't quite beat us and they came back in the dying minutes to beat Arsenal in the '88 League Cup final. If not for the UEFA ban, they'd have been in Europe!

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

depends what you call a hole really, i would rather go to kenilworth road any day than go to somewhere like st marys or brittania stadium. yeah i think it seats about 9000. why hate a club cos of something their chairman said? football fans be weird....

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 15 October 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Bristol Rovers are 18th in League Two. This puts us five points from the relegation zone and five points from a playoff slot = a few good or bad games could change the look the season hugely.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 15 October 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

AFC Wimbledon had a break from the league today (not necessarily a bad thing, as we've won one league game in the last nine, despite, in our last two games, being the better team against more highly-rated opponents) to take on Kings Lynn in the FA Trophy. We won 1-0 after an absorbing, close tie - on reflection it was a fair result, as Kings Lynn seemed like they were really only playing for a money-spinning replay whereas we had a spark about us, albeit an inconsitent one.

There seem to be two main schools of thought on the AFCW guestbook; go to the game and support the lads till our last breath, and go to MK but refuse to enter the ground. I dunno what I'd do but it's all good fun right now :)

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 20 October 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

When AFCW was set up, but Wimbledon were still playing at Selhurst Park for about six months (or whatever it was), there were still a few hundred Wimbledon fans who kept going. What did they do when the team finally moved up to MK? And changed its name? Did they a)see sense and watch AFCW / b)stay at home and sob over their 1988 cup final posters / c)go to MK? I like to think there's maybe a hardcore of three fans in denial who head up the M1 every weekend for the SoccerTM experience in Buckinghamshire's greatest city and still think the team is called Wimbledon.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 20 October 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

By all rights I should be enthusing about Sparta Rotterdam's splendid return to the Dutch top-flight, currently 7th and doing far better than anyone expected.

This season, though, I've spent more time watching local amateur side VV Katwijk. After narrowly avoiding the drop last time they've made a solid start to the competition currently 4th in the Dutch amateur saturday competition, Top Class Group A (don't ask).

All the more sweeter: on the other side of the village pre-season favourites, and fierce local rivals, Quick Boys are second bottom having failed, to win a single game.

Last Saturday, sadly, the 'orange shirts' lost their unbeaten record spectacularly throwing away a 2-0 lead away in the last 20 minutes, losing 2-3 to Excelsior Maasluis. I was gutted.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 20 October 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone understand what happened to non League football about a season or two ago? I used to watch my local team (Harlow Town) when I was a kid, and they were always in the Isthmian League. This changed its name every other season when the sponsor changed (Servowarm, Vauxhall-Opel, Diadora, Ryman, whatever) but it was still the same league, with the same teams in it. Then one Sunday I was going through the Observer, trying to find their result, and they seemed to have disappeared out of existence. Eventually I found them in something called the Southern League Eastern Division, with a whole load of different teams. It doesn't make any sense to me - they seem to have jumped sideways into another league for no reason. Football will mourn the loss of the M11 derby (against Bishops Stortford).

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 20 October 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

i think this sort of explains it a bit:
(from wikipedia
"In 2004, The Football Association pushed through a major restructuring of the non-league National League System (NLS), creating new regional divisions of the Football Conference. The Isthmian League was reduced back down to three divisions, and its boundaries were changed to remove the overlap with the Southern League. The Premier Division (at step 3 of the NLS) covers Greater London and most of south east England; and the First Division (at step 4) covers a smaller area of south London and the southern Home Counties. The league still overlaps with the Southern League and its feeder leagues to some degree, especially at step 5, the Isthmian Second Division. Future restructuring at this level of the pyramid may force the Second Division to merge with another league"

Can we talk about Gascoigne at Kettering?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 28 October 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

My understanding is that you're not too far from reality there - they are certanly a VERY endangered species. A lot also chose option b) - they probably support Fulham or Chelsea or Palace now, or their local non-league team. But I'd say 90%+ of the WFC season ticket holders went happily to AFCW.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 28 October 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

gascoigne @ anywhere is a bad move, right?

silly old kettering...

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 28 October 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

Yes, he'll be an appalling manager - can we see him imposing any useful discipline? Convincing his players to the best dietary and drinking habits? Instilling an ethic of hard work? Understanding anyone's personal difficulties? Brilliantly analysing or creating tactics?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 28 October 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

And they've basically removed Kevin Wilson from his position to employ him. For how bad it went for him in his last season at the Cobblers, Wilson always struck me as a canny kind of manager, one who would always be a boon for any team located at the arse-end of football.

Thank you.

More importantly, Bristol Rovers win away from home to move up to 8th, which must be our highest position in the second half of a season for several years. We're only outside the playoffs on goal difference, and it doesn't seem so many games ago (ten or so?) that we were 19th.

Went to see AFC Wimbledon today for the first time as, oddly, my mate's group were playing a gig there after the match. A 2-2 with Slough, with Wimbledon surrendering a two-goal lead, and a slightly flat atmosphere. Here is the goalkeeper hoofing the ball high and off the right side of the pitch for the third time in five minutes:

Wow Teh HOBB! I missed your post when you made it. It doesn't sound like you had the best time - for some reason, mid-season games vs inferior opposition where we take an early lead seem to be the least atmospheric occasions. We've never been the loudest of crowds, but our three seasons of easy victories seem to have sapped our vocal passions at times.

We beat Leyton on Saturday to hang onto 8th with a game or two in hand. The playoffs are still possible, and we've just signed a former Luton and Sheffield Wednesday striker called Liam George - has anyone heard of him?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 6 February 2006 11:27 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i have. quite highly rated while at luton, and a good finisher i think. no idea what happened since, but it happens a lot innit. sort of like if izale mcleod hadn't have stopped the rot i guess?

i miss olly already.

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Monday, 6 February 2006 11:36 (twenty years ago)

i mean he was always rubbish, but u were watching him learn to manage; his career was like watching yr local non league team trying to get a giant killing going. for 4 years.

but he took over at our lowest ebb ever, with like 2 players on the books. by rights we should have gone down to the 3rd division as well that year, but no. he rebuilt rangers from nothing... so thanks very much let's have a coffee eh.

as for new manager: martin allen wd be brill, but why would he bother? dull option = kenny jackett, horrible feeling its going to happen option = dennis bloody wise :(

Bristol Rovers are still hovering at the edge of the playoffs - 1 place on goal difference, with Darlington right above us, which is where we are going on Saturday. Looks a big game. Highest we've been with two thirds of the season gone in at least 5 years.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 6 February 2006 13:37 (twenty years ago)

I can't figure out the Izale McLeod reference upthread.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 6 February 2006 14:02 (twenty years ago)

I'm quite happy at the moment, Joe Royle's Superblues steamrolled the budgies yesterday. So, we're 10 points away for the play offs and only a miracle would see us sneak into promtion contention, but my predictions of a transitionary season seem to have been correct, with a fine youthful team emerging which could challenge for title honours next season.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 12:02 (twenty years ago)

No, Doug Ellis said in 1998 that Villa's 3-2 victory over Spurs reminded him of the Roses gig at Ally Pally some nine years before.

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 18:28 (twenty years ago)

And while technically not a reference to a gig, Claudio Ranieri famously ran up to Arsene Wenger after Chelsea had dumped Arsenal out of the European Cup and shouted "Kiss me where the sun don't shine - the past is yours, but the future's mine!" (shortly before getting the sack).

I'm really happy! I thought Bristol Rovers' playoff chances were fading fast, and being away to playoff certs Wycombe seemed an unlikely occasion for changing that. Rovers won 3-1 and just as wonderfully, the other three teams chasing that last playoff slot all lost! We are now outside a playoff place only on goal difference (we have an appalling goal difference, sadly), and with half a dozen games left, we are in with a very real chance. I am delighted.

I say we are going up (if we win the playoffs)!

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 22 April 2006 17:02 (twenty years ago)

It looks like we're going up automatically this season, although I'm sure we can put together an end of season three-match losing streak to ensure a play-off spot.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 22 April 2006 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Bristol Rovers are two points off a playoff place with two games remaining, but since there are two teams ahead of us and we have much the worst goal difference in that part of the table, we would need both to drop at least three points out of six, so I don't think it'll happen. I had a bit of optimism until Peterborough got an injury time winner - otherwise we'd have only had one team to overtake.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 22 April 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 6 May 2006 16:15 (twenty years ago)

If it gave the impression that students watching local football is anything other than a rarity, THEN YES.

I've never seen Oxford play, despite having been here for six years. I only found out they were at risk of relegation from the football league yesterday. And I like football. Most Oxford students who claim to like football actually mean "I have an Arsenal shirt", which is orthogonal.

caek (caek), Saturday, 6 May 2006 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Seven years. Fuck.

caek (caek), Saturday, 6 May 2006 16:41 (twenty years ago)

So Arsenal fans don't like football? (yes, yes, I know...). Due to an unfortunate accident of geography and super-protective parents, I didn't get to see Celtic at Celtic Park until I left school, didn't mean I didn't support them.

This "fans of big teams aren't real fans" schtick is really fucking boring. Sorry. I moved to Paisley seven years ago and I've never been to see St Mirren. Bad me.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 6 May 2006 16:52 (twenty years ago)

They do orthogonal Arsenal shirts now? Is it some kind of 8-bit retro thing?

I'm very glad MK Duds are down, Mark - apart from anything else, it means my Rotherham-supporting workmate (and, in our cramped office, he's only about 15 inches away from me) won't be quite so grumpy on Monday.

My brother used to go and see Stoke, Port Vale and (for a bit of Euro glamour) Nottm Forest when he was at Keele in the '70s. Different times. He drew the line at Crewe Alex though.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 6 May 2006 16:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm not saying Arsenal fans don't like football at all. I have no problem with people supporting succesful teams.

I'm specifically talking about fabulously wealthy Oxford undergraduates who have never been to a football match in their life despite having the financial resources to buy/acquire tickets and the ability to travel with ease.

caek (caek), Saturday, 6 May 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

I was very happy to see MK Dons relegated again. I want them to die painfully (as a club, not the players or fans, obv).

The other nice irony was that 44 years ago Accrington Stanley dropped out of the league and became a joke club. They were replaced by Oxford. Yesterday the roles were reversed.

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 8 May 2006 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Leeds the largest city in England without top flight football, will this change soon?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 8 May 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Possibly in the next 5 years, but by then England will be re-named Portsmouth, due to the cultural and financial clout wielded by said Googolopolis.

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 8 May 2006 19:54 (twenty years ago)

xpost, yes. Villa will go down next year.

Paddy Power/William Hill will take your money !

Yorkshire Delight: Leeds United in the Play off Final

against either:
Watford - firm faves 3 up from first leg
or
Crystal Palace - if then can get a shock result

I fucking despise Leeds' bertie big bollocks fans, of which there were many in the pub tonight, just as there seemed to be for West Ham last year. Banging on about the 'pain' of being outside the top flight for 2 years. Yeah, so painful you get a parachute payment to help you keep a higher level squad, which includes buying three of Preston's best players because you've got all these resources despite the apparently huge cutbacks you've had. Wankers.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 8 May 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

dude, Eddie Lewis was on a free iirc, Healey probably cost a few bob, but Richard Cresswell?? PNE are well rid, he's rubbish.

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 8 May 2006 21:35 (twenty years ago)

I keep meaning to do a "Sleeping Giants: C/D?" thread on here, mainly so we can all discuss negative experiences with Sheffield Wednesday fans.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 8 May 2006 21:38 (twenty years ago)

It about ability to pay wages - Leeds' pockets are deeper by virtue of those parachute payments.

one year passes...

lol Wigan

Charlton 4 Stockport 3 (Charlton 2-0 up then Stockport 3-2 up) reads like a smashing roller coaster ride at The Valley
