(Comic, Times, Garamond, etc., are typefaces; a font is traditionally the set of characters in a given typeface at a given size and weight/style--so Palatino is a typeface and Palatino 10 bold, or whatever, is a font.)
I guess the answer to my question is "no."

Out of the old Mac system fonts it was sort of the default "classy" font and it was inappropriately overused in the same way that comic sans is now. You have to picture it printed by a dot matrix printer for the full effect.

I just had a student come in to the library asking questions about using apa format in research papers, so I asked to look at the paper they were writing and it was in comic sans serif. I stood there in disbelief for a minute or two, I'm lucky I didn't have a psychotic break with reality.

after all, there are far worse fonts around. Do you ever bring up the dropdwon list on Word and think "why on earth did they include those? Can I think of a reason for EVER EVER using at least half of these gross fonts??? Answer: No!"

I remember in an early Dilbert strip the Pointy Haired Boss urged his staff to use sans-serif fonts in faxes coz they go through the fax machine quicker and don't cost so much to send.
Maybe the use of the word 'comic' was a bit of a faux pas. Rename this font!
Have to say that sans serif fonts look friendlier than serif ones in the same way that lower case looks friendlier than BLOCK CAPITALS. Witness the changes in the health warnings on cigarrette packets. Years ago the warnings were HM GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH warnings in BLOCK CAPITALS and something resembling Times New Roman like some elderly relative was telling you the harm of smoking with a wagging finger whereas now the warnings are in lower case sans serif like a friend saying "Hey mate, you do realise the harm those things are doing to you, don't you?"
― Grandpont Genie, Friday, 6 July 2007 13:56 (eighteen years ago)
Yes, but comic sans isn't just friendly, it's Special Olympics friendly.
― kenan, Friday, 6 July 2007 13:58 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I was gonna say. It's got nothing on the pitch-perfect MODERNITY! of plain Rockwell, but it's pretty inoffensive and probably useful for certain purposes. Comic Sans is universally awful and a dead giveaway that whatever's written in it isn't worth reading anyway.

I was yanking fonts out of Ubuntu in an effort to get a little better speed out of it -- font management does not exist in Linux, unsurprisingly -- and a vast majority of the real sludge, the bottom of the barrel tasteless offensive UGH fonts that came with the distro were by this popular fellow: http://www.larabiefonts.com/.

i once had an instructor write me a letter of recommendation in Comic Sans. it said a lot of very nice things but i was a bit nervous about sending it out.
upthread someone mentioned Comic Sans is ideal for dyslexics because of its "readability" -- this is true apparently! it's the default font on the transcriber software i use at work.

I like the concept of taking something that is bad but popular and making it less bad. And I think he accomplishes that pretty well for the most part. Is there a way to improve Papyrus or other similarly awful fonts? Or is the essence of it too shitty to be salvaged?
I dunno, I guess this is the kind of dumb shit I like to think about.

Dyslexic.com weigns in: " Some dyslexic people find that Comic Sans is one of the more readable of the commonly-available Windows fonts, and we have used it on this web site in the past. Others find it too bold, too childish or too informal."

Yesterday a company we've been dealing with at work sent its first official status report on a 12-week project they're doing for us. The headlines were in Comic Sans and the body was in a font similar to this:
http://schoolfonts.com/printnew/_ZWriting.gif
They're a fairly niche company, but are highly recognized within our industry as basically the only people who do what we need them to do. Still, we're going to have words with them about the fonts.

I have no idea why people hate comic sans and papyrus.
My wife likes papyrus. I have informed her that some people hate it. She was also puzzled as to why this would be so.
I suspect that it is too often associated with people who think crystals are particularly good rocks for healing stuff that needs to be healed. And those who like to talk about angels as if they were the Good Witch from the 1939 Wizard of Oz movie.
― a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Tuesday, 24 May 2016 05:08 (ten years ago)
i think the hatred for these fonts has to do with how often they are used. they are kind of goofy and poorly designed to begin with and seem to be used whenever people want to add a bit of pizzazz to lame documents. they just connote laziness and dumbness.
comic sans has sort of taken on a life of its own though. it's so widely reviled that it's become a widely acknowledged visual shorthand for unseriousness, which is kind of a weird thing. typography used to be one of those elements of graphic design that average people didn't attend to very much.

As a teacher, I find comic sans fairly useful. I use it sparingly, but it comes in handy to make slides look more kid-friendly, or to suggest the idea of handwriting without actually using a handwriting font that kids can't read. Like, if I'm telling them to write something on a notecard, I might give them an example sentence in comic sans to emphasize this is the part that you write.
