I demand an explanation.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

There is one?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

"apple sauce, bitch."

-- really the only thing that can be said in his favor.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

I'm always saddened when I hear that someone I respect actually likes his films. "What, you don't? What about CLERKS?!" etc. So fucking unfunny and lame it's appalling.

andy --, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

man he is funny as fuck

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

The explanation is: Comic-Book Guy who has one cute movie in him makes six.

I saw Clerks at MoMA in '94 before it had a music track and liked it; haven't seen it, or liked any of his films, since. He hits upon a nice tone or joke now and then, but can't sustain it. However, he seems like a sweet guy in Q&As -- I saw one before "Dogma" at the NY Film Fest too --so I don't wish him ill; there are more evil people making lackluster movies that make an awful lot more $$$.

"clerks" is new jersey exemplified in film. somoeone had to do it.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

'affleck, you the bomb in phantoms yo!'

This is kinda like the 'quote lyrics to indicate the depth' problem explained on that 10000 Maniacs thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

that one is funny too

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

chasing amy is funny

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

and if you think kevin smith is any cornier than all those mid 90s mystery science theater sketches then you are trippin

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

i like jason lee

2, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

haha xpost ned you like monty python

That's sorta like me saying to someone else "Ha, you like MBV."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

clerks is dead funny, how the fuck can you not laugh at jay and silent bob dancing. they were funny as fuck in scream 3 too. and beserker! alright maybe the star wars bit seems a bit lame in retrospect. but that is one film i can just watch over and over. not surprised ilx doesn't dig him, isn't this the same group who spent like 300 posts "hilariously" "dissing" melissa marchant or whatver her name is.

beatles fan, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

He wrote two pretty good Green Arrow stories. His Daredevil stuff was pretty putride, howev.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

mystery science theater MUCH higher laugh rate at my house. (The people who wrote that show read books.)

When I saw Affleck in Good Will Hunting I said, "Oh, the guy from Chasing Amy. I still wanna punch him."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

ned i dont like monty python

4 years, 6 months, 90 minutes y'all

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember any of what you're talking about (Scream 3? people watched that?). Tho Smith's Star Wars fixation/apologetics are rather telling... personally I haven't seen Clerks since it came out either and my only recollection is that there were a couple funny vignettes about being a bored wage slave and then that unbelievably unfunny "ohmigod she fucked a dead guy!" ending, which is like the punchline to some 4th grade playground joke...

Morbs OTM re: MST 3000. That guy is just more deeply versed in popular culture.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

mystery science theater MUCH higher laugh rate at my house. (The people who wrote that show read books.)

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

you sound like a bitch

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

I pretty much agree with Dr. Morbius. Clerks is okay in a punk-rock, diy, barely competent, one-good-idea-padded-oout-with-a-bunch-of-lousy-ones way, but if a meteor had landed on him as soon as the final cut had been canned, we'd have been spared a lot of pain.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

I enjoyed many parts of Mallrats.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

I saw him on Trio, I think, last week talking to college kids in Wyoming, and he was quite charming, really.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

I think he named his kid after a c-list Batman villain. That's pretty lame.

Killer Moth-L, Son of Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

I like Mallrats and Chasing Amy, partly because I like humor involving Jason Lee and taking comic books too seriously.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

THEFORCE, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

maybe I just don't appreciate that Smith's movies are all bounded by rather pedestrian reference points - John Hughes, Star Wars, crappy comics I could never be bothered to read, etc. And that's all there is to it. By comparison, MST 3000 is like fucking Dennis Miller (back before he was a right-wing hack)...

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

dude mystery science theater is pretty middlebrow... since when is shit funnier just cuz the references are more obscure!??

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

anyway i could give a shit about star wars but punisher war journal/'kneel before zod' jokes are funny

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

who fucking cares how "pedestrian" "reference points" are?

(xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

But MST3K makes fun of obscure, crappy movies mostly by referencing other obscure, crappy movies!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

thank you man!! 'they seem like they read books' get the fuck outta here

2, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

b-b-b-b-but punisher war journal is totally obscure!!!
I'm not talking about obscurity, I'm talking about acknowledging a larger world out there apart from the same four things he was obsessed with as a 13-year-old.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

why do you want him to do that?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

I saw him on Trio, I think, last week talking to college kids in Wyoming, and he was quite charming, really.

-- M. White (deir...), August 9th, 2005.

yeah, thats from the 'evening with kevin smith' thing. hes actually really funny in that, especially when talking about his encounters with Prince and Jon Peters (the Batman producer).

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

MST3K made fun of obscure, crappy movies mostly by referencing Georgia O'Keeffe, TV, Nixon, Oscar Wilde, Wisconsin theme parks, Renaissance fairs, etc.

Who taught 3 to type? Cornelius and Zira?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Chasing Amy seemed really poignant to me when I first saw it. Maybe because if a way it dovetailed w. my life at the time, but I think (despite the Jay & Silent Bob cameo) that it is dramatically quite a good flick. The rest of his career be damned, I think many of the beats in the Affleck / Adams love story are quite affecting from the point of view of nerdy, insecure guys; a group in which I (at the time) very much included myself.

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

cmon slocki dont you know movies are only good if theyre about exactly the same things you care about

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

who taught you to type?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

I couldn't get past the whole "convert the lesbian" angle. just too ridiculous. like the "plot" of a porn movie.

x-post

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

i dunno--i think it's possible for a reference to be less funny if it is too well know (hence too obvious...the humor can derive from the unexpectedness of something more obscure--like reference shakespeare in mst3k while watching a really stupid movie, it's just a funny juxtaposition, making both shakespeare and the movie seem more ridiculous)

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

i think dogma proves dude read a couple books too, at least the bible & lewis carroll

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

cuz shakespeare isn't well-known at ALL! (xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

that dude from kill bill taught me how to type

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

cmon slocki dont you know movies are only good if theyre about exactly the same things you care about

How are you different from that?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

"why do you want him to do that? "

cuz I get tired of the same old jokes about the same old shit, especially when they weren't that funny to begin with? Broaden yr horizons, man! Or if yr gonna keep 'em narrow at least pick more interesting, unusual ones. Really, all his Star Wars refs are so unforgivable just because they're so goddamn lazy and obvious and pointless.

x-post

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

ha slocki you know what i meant damnit! i meant "highbrow" more than obscure, but you can substitute some more obscure for shakespeare if you want and my point stands.

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

'yeah this from the guy who still owes me 10 bucks over that bet about what was gonna be the bigger movie, e.t. or krush groove...' 'fuck you man cuz time is still gonna tell on that one!!'

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

What I mean is: in spite of Chasing Amy's shortcomings, there's a lot of human truth to respect, and a real candor that's missing from the rest of Smith's work. Truly, it's the exception proving the rule of his career.

(xpost) Shakey Mo -- I read that 'lesbian conversion' (at the time) as being the whole problem with the relationship: that Affleck thought he could convert Alyssa, and because she was an equally self-unaware person, she was willing to let him try it in spite of its non-truth. Like the two of them were so desperate for affection they attempted to ignore the logical fallacies of their pairing. But I admit I may have projected a lot of that.

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

dogma doesnt have any star wars refs

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

i dunno, i mean i think popcult referential humour doesn't really stand on what is being referred to as much as how well it's done

(xp to ryan)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

'maybe somebody threw him outta a plane with a message written on him like in con air!! you ever see that flick!?!'

2, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

and like i said i don't like the guy's movies but surely people can come up with better reasons to dislike them than "too-obvious references"!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

yeah good point slocki--(i dont know anything about kevin smith, btw)

ryan (ryan), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Chasing Amy was so obviously a movie written by someone unfamiliar with lesbians (turns out he'd met some, like, the week before he wrote it).

OK, he hadn't read a book since he was 16. Jesus, another Kevin Smith thread -- I'm off to see a Renoir film followed by a bartender and suggest you do the same.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

and i think part of the humour even IS the fact that he's referring to star wars and con air as opposed to montaigne or machado de assis or whatevs.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

'mass genocide is the most exhausting activity one can engage in, next to soccer.'

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Don't forget to swill your absinthe carefully less you soil your cravat, Dr. Morbius.

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

(I was kidding, by the way).

Chasing Amy was so obviously a movie written by someone unfamiliar with lesbians (turns out he'd met some, like, the week before he wrote it).

I don't think you can blame him for his limited experience: it's a very personal movie that's unfortunately brought down by a kinda cheap gimmick. But that doesn't render the whole truth of the thing invalid.

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Still not making your case, 3.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

By comparison, MST 3000 is like fucking Dennis Miller (back before he was a right-wing hack)...
Worst endorsement ever. I guess you could have likened them to Bill Maher or someone, though...

Chasing Amy is the only good Smith movie, but there are funny lines in the rest (Clerks less so). Usually just enough funny to make it worth sitting through the movie.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

ok but slocki a reference to con air is way funnier (in abstract) than one to star wars. i mean, wtf con air!?

The MST guys met Dennis Miller once and, perceptively, hated him. (Miller passed as 'intellectual' standup via old-TV references -- he's always been ignorant.)

Kevin Smith films will age about as well as Wheeler and Woolsey's (but theirs were funnier to begin with).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

yes i judge all comedy by how funny it will seem to assholes in the year 3000

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

I think I had a similar experience as Remy w/r/t Chasing Amy, especially since it came out when I was 18.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

'this website is called 'fuck them in their stupid asses.' it says 'jay and silent bob are stupid characters, a couple of stoners who spout dumb-ass catch phrases like a third rate cheech and chong or bill and ted. fuck jay and silent bob. fuck them in their stupid asses.' 'who the fuck said that shit?' 'a guy who calls himself 'magnolia fan'.'

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

that one also has stifler in it

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Kevin Smith the guy seems to be by all accounts a really great guy.

Ditto Kevin Smith the comix fan.

Back in '94, CLERKS struck me as a sweet and often clever reminder of just how much one can accomplish with $24,000 and a camera.

But, y'know, give Kevin Smith the writer-director $24K, and he'll give you $50K worth of picture. Give him $12MM... and he'll give you $50K worth of picture.

Yes, there are parts of MALLRATS that are kinda funny, but that's not even enough of a defense to justify MALLRATS, let alone Smith's subsequent career. CHASING AMY does offer charming performers, but the script is miserable - and often most so when it's trying hardest not to be, as in the interminable monologue-in-the-rain. DOGMA is, well, godawful, and all the more so when it strains for relevance. I'd rather sit through HUCKABEES again, and that's saying something.

My defense: he does seem like a humble, likeable fellow, and neither he, his movies, or his fans get in the way of my enjoyment of life. So y'know, why hate?

I might feel differently if I dropped down a rabbit hole into some Bizzaro world where I found myself surrounded by Kevin Smith fans insisting on his genius status, but since that hasn't happened yet...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back is/was funnier than most American comedies of the last five years.

3 mostly otm throughout this thread imo.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

it's hard to argue someone out of an erection

*insert joke about ex here*

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Haha... I ended up on the wikiquote page for Roger Ebert. Goddamn, that guy's got some gems:

(sorry, off-topic)

"People read the papers not in the hopes of learning something new, but in the expectation of being told what they already know. This is a form of living death. Its apotheosis is the daily poll in USA Today, which informs "us" what percentage of a small number of unscientifically selected people called a toll number to vote on questions that cannot possibly be responded to with a "yes" or "no."

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

one shitty rain monologue in Chasing Amy is more than outweighed by comparing oral sex scars and the look on Jason Lee's face when he realizes that Alyssa is a lesbian.

also, "Bitch pressing charges?" and the Santa Claus/Angry Man-Hating Dyke joke.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

His only defense is that, unlike say Tarantino, when he appears in his own movies he doesn't feel the need to give himself a ton of dialog.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

What exactly do you all think is wrong with the rain scene in Chasing Amy? [Note: I'm not defending / slagging it, but I'm genuinely curious to the really strong reactions it evokes.]

picture a single column of formatted dialogue running over three or more solid pages of script. It's like the fifty-hitler post of pouring your heart out. You turn the page and he's still going.

3, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Sure, roger. Agreed, definately -- but let me play a bit of devil's advocate?

The rain scene is long and very on the nose, which is unconventional writing. But that convention is kind of limiting and silly, and I don't think that the scene is too repetitive? I mean sure, it's a little uncomfortable to watch somebody pour their heart out so blatantly, but couldn't you make the case that it's a very essential piece of the movie?

The rain scene is long and very on the nose, which is unconventional writing. But that convention is kind of limiting and silly.

I respect where you're going with this, but I'm not sure which convention you have in mind. There's a reason that on-the-nose doesn't work very well, and there's a reason that we tend to be more comfortable with dialog (as opposed to soliloquy/self-address/other more stagey dramatic conventions) in human-sized bites (or even smaller).

I mean sure, it's a little uncomfortable to watch somebody pour their heart out so blatantly, but couldn't you make the case that it's a very essential piece of the movie?

I agree that it's an essential piece of the movie. That's why when it falls, for me, spectacularly flat, it takes a lot of the good stuff with it. I'm certain there's a scene that does what you're suggesting here well, but I don't feel that this one is it. Smith doesn't strike me as quite so artful as you suggest. If anything, he's more of a naturalist. And when the ear for the charming effluvia of "the real language of real men" on which he earns so much of his bread fails him, that on-the-nose quality stands out all the more.

LOCKER ROOM TOWEL FIGHT: THE BLINDING OF LARRY DRISCOLL (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

I agree w. you on the second point, and (for the record) just re-read the scene and found it way, way, way long. But I don't think that on-the-nose dialogue is necessarily detrimental to good screencraft -- as long as it's used pointedly, and to the effect that "this is where the character reconciles the internal emotional truth with their situation-at-hand" is made eminently clear. And very, very sparingly. All that being said, I dunno how well this scene does that, and especially given that it's completely verbalized, there's little besides emotional carnage to carry the information through on a second or third viewing.

Kevin Smith and his fans: Not Funny At All Ever.

David Merryweather Goes To Far (scarlet), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

i've seen kevin smith movies and i enjoy them 'okay enough' and sometimes i'll catch them again accidentally on tv or maybe at the video store one of the dudes behind the counter--what do you call them--is watching clerks and hey, i still laugh, it's funny, but i understand the hate despite my relative enjoyment of him. the culture that surrounds him is obnoxious, you'd think the guy was sergio leone or his films were repo man-level awesome. he's like the fat, funny guy at the party who wears the 'i love bob saget' shirt and makes vulgar jokes about star wars. sure, we all love the guy, who wouldn't, but he's not the greatest.

that said, many a college night was enjoyed with beer, pizza, and 'mallrats' and 'billy madison', when i wasn't out getting some/partying. make that 'many, many, many' a college night, come to think of it.to "shut the fuck up about View Askew! Tell it to the internet!"

We stop at a joint called Pizza Pucks to grab some dinner, favoring the Mom & Pop shop over the Round Table Pizza in the other strip mall. The Pizza Puck, we’re told, is a pizza done like a Cinnabun: thin dough, rolled up with the sauce and cheese. There’s confusion with our order and what should take five minutes winds up taking forty. This may have something to do with the two twenty-something cooks in the kitchen staring at me for fifteen minutes instead of getting our order right. In instances like that, I wish folks would just come over and ask “Are you that fat director?” or something. The stare-down is a little creepy.

We hit the local Borders, where I take a dump, while Jen grabs a book to take home to Harley. We shake the ‘burb dust from our sandals, and with that, we’re back on the road.

Kevin Smith has a weblog. Mallrats is fucking ace, though I haven't watched it in about six years. His columns about his weight loss and other general shit in 'Arena' were also funny as hell.

I don't get Kevin Smith movies the same way I don't get people who will keel over laughing any time they hear a Zod reference. That isn't to say that those people aren't funny (although "3" is definitely batting a fat zero on this thread), just that they have a totally different sense of humor than I do.

I also don't care for MST3000. And I'll take Mr. Show or Chappelle's Show over Monty Python any day of the week.

I also think the Simpson have sucked since about 1999.

Yeah this is the key point except substitute directing skills for visual sensibility. Even people who are good actors are freakin' terrible in Kevin Smith films. It works fine if the movie is too silly to care (Mallrats, Jay and Silent Bob), but when he atempts to be serious, especially with Dogma, the results are cringe worthy.

Cico (Cico), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

i liked clerks when i saw it and that's it. "charming" as they say, faint praise, sure. efan you've knocked down a lot of lame reasons for not liking him but there aren't any good reasons to like him left after that anyway. dogma proves he hasn't read anything, "the bible," come off it! yes i understand that this "jesus" character is involved... it's a shitty movie. same with chasing amy, totally awful.

his movies aren't funny cos the scripts have about six times as many words as they should. like listening to a very bright 12 year old tell a joke

And be careful not to suck any cocks on your way to doing it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Dudes, I can settle this pretty easily:

Clerks - pretty funny small-focus comedy. Good.
Mallrats - mildly amusing mid-focus comedy. OK.
Chasing Amy - fairly awful mid-to-large-focus drama. Shitty.
Dogma - fucking incredibly shitty huge-focus comedy. Worst piece of shit movie I've ever seen.
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back - pretty funny small-to-no-focus comedy. Good.

(read "focus" as scope and seriousness of subject matter)

In summary, when Smith sticks to making dumb comedies about nothing, he succeeds in making reasonably funny movies. Whenever he tries to make a movie "about" something, it blows, with the relative level of blowosity directly correlated to how serious the subject matter is.

Can we stop talking about this now? Like for ever and ever? Thanks.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

Salma Hayek blows so hard in that movie. But I think what bugged me so much about it was how offensive it was in its non-offensiveness. There was all this hype about it, first about pissing off Catholics and then about how it was actually pro-religion, but its take on religion was just so blah and noncommital and uninteresting. I wish it had either been scathingly blasphemous or actually defensive of religion in an interesting way but instead it was just stupid vaguely-religion-themed shit jokes.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

There is an almost infinite array of interesting opinions, stories, and takes on religion, and Dogma somehow managed to avoid every single one of them.

That's the thing with Dogma, I mean, Kevin Smith might've been AIMING for scathing/important/etc., but I think it might work for me, personally, because it's essentially a bizarro Clerks pt. 2, with a couple ancient, pissed off demigods as the bitter nerds who are, like, going THROUGH it, MAN.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

But I can understand how, more than any other of his films (besides Chasing Amy*), Dogma's approach might ruin the humor that is primary directive of his films (besides Chasing Amy*).

agreed that star wars references have been done to death by family guy, robot chicken, adam & joe and kevin smith... but was anyone really referencing star wars in the same way before clerks? it's easy in hindisght to dismiss that film but to give him a bit of credit, he made the film on his lunch break and basically had to beg borrow and steal to make it. i think in '94 (or whenever it was), the idea of early-20s dorks chattin breeze about star wars on film was pretty new. pulp fiction did that "let's just have an amusing conversation for no real reason" thing a bit later on and it was seen as pretty leftfield.

it's not the Clerks was 1st on the referencing Star Wars train, it was just early on the infantilized Gen X yearning for yesteryear nerd nostalgia shit.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 20:29 (seventeen years ago)

perhaps some additional detail would be helpful here altho lolz wtf like this even matters... one day, months and months ago, my wife heard about this movie starring Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks that was about making a porno and expressed an interest in seeing it, because she likes Seth Rogen a lot (as do I). I said "no fucking way, that Kevin Smith guy is horrible". She says "who's Kevin Smith?" I say, (knowing that she has at least seen parts of these two movies on cable) "you know, the guy who made "Clerks" and "Dogma". Can't stand him." She says "eh, whatever". One day, months later, while I am home sick, she says "hey I'm gonna go to the crappy corner video store and rent whatever looks entertaining." She returns with Zack and Miri and Wall-E saying "well, this is what they had." We watch movies. We don't like either of them. The END.

He's not a huge brand for most people, Ethan. That's why his movies don't make money.

people mentioned on this thread, who are not Kevin Smith, that my wife would recognize instantly:

John Landis
David Lynch
Paul Newman

not so sure about David O. Russell but she has seen his movies

But at the risk of stating the obvious there is a big BIG difference between a) seeing a movie, b) knowing who the director is, and c) having an opinion on the director's entire body of work

maybe I just don't appreciate that Smith's movies are all bounded by rather pedestrian reference points - John Hughes, Star Wars, crappy comics I could never be bothered to read, etc. And that's all there is to it. I think it's more like MOST people don't know what channel 24 on if Lost is the one show they're really into, but if it's vice versa they know what channel 24 is on but not Lost. the main difference between people who expend a lot (or too much) time digesting pop culture is that they know a lot about stuff they're not even into, whereas most people at least have a favorite band or a favorite show or a favorite director they're pretty well versed in.

Indian cuisine is one of the most popular cuisines across the globe.[18] The cuisine is popular not only among the large Indian diaspora but also among the mainstream population of North America and Europe.[19] In 2003, there were as many as 10,000 restaurants serving Indian cuisine in the United States alone.[20] A survey held in 2007 revealed that more than 1,200 Indian food products have been introduced in the United States since 2000.[21] According to Britain's Food Standards Agency, Indian food industry in the United Kingdom is worth £3.2 billion, accounts for two-thirds of all eating out and serves about 2.5 million British customers every week.[22]

You agree there's a difference between "care about" and "know about", yes? I think you can make the argument that there are very few pop culture things "most people" know about since people are self-selecting in their tastes and what they choose to pay attention to, so that whole avenue of argument is a dead end; however, people in close social circles (like say, spouses) tend to have at least heard of the same things even if they don't actively follow them.

Oh god, right on cue:

Warner Bros. recently confirmed a date with director Kevin Smith. The View Askew auteur's next film, "Couple of Dicks", starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan ("30 Rock"), will go down January 29th, 2010. Teaming with a big wig studio is a departure from previous Smith films, which have typically been released under indie labels like Miramax and Weinstein Co. But with superstar Willis on board, you just can't skimp on the craft services and honey wagons. No word yet on the plot, but expect this comedy caper to be more of a mainstream product than previous Smith efforts, especially since he is not currently listed as a writer on this project. Robb and Marc Cullen have screenwriting credit; Robb of the TV series "Las Vegas," "Gary the Rat," and "Heist." Hopefully, Kevin Smith will add a generous helping of his "stank" into the mix in the form of gratuitous rude behavior and slanderous one-liners. C'mon, where else are kids these days going to pick up their new slang from, if not Kevin Smith films?

in the US

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:26 (seventeen years ago)

Kevin Smith is as well known as Tarantino in the US? Wow.

Alba, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, Kevin Smith's films come out here, but Tarantino is a household name.

Alba, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think that is true anymore actually, but it was probably once true.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:36 (seventeen years ago)

That said I was trying to think of 90s directors that are household names and I couldn't come up with much. Smith is probably the second most recognizeable name after Tarantino.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:37 (seventeen years ago)

Actually, I'd put M. Night about Kevin Smith.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:39 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i was going though the rolodex of celebrity directors (a la spielberg) in my head... James Cameron was kind of household name around Titanic, but i'm not sure that's what we're talking about here.

now is the time to winterize your manscape (will), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:40 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah. The timeline is hazy to me; I have the bad tendency to think everything between 1989 and 2002 happened at about the same time.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:40 (seventeen years ago)

Tarantino here is like, one step down from Spielberg in terms of recognition. Probably above someone like ... Ridley Scott as a household name as directors go. Kevin Smith is in a much lower league. Someone like M. Night Shyamalan - yeah, as many, if not more people will have seen the movies, but he's not a name in the same way.

Alba, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

Except that his name is totally recognizeable.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

but all of his movies are called "M. Night Shyamalan's The Blah Blah Blah"

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

I don't really get the animus towards smith. He's pretty easy to ignore if you don't like him.

only the beginning of the firestorm (latebloomer), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, but the general population just don't talk about M. Night Shyamalan's movies as director's movies. They're not thought of that way. Tarantino is a far higher profile in that sense. Kevin Smith is nowhere near.

Alba, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

but how can you ignore ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS DIRECTORS OF THE 90S

Comic Book Morbius (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:45 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah that would just be weird.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

hence, this thread

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

the general population may not know Kevin Smith as a brand name director but they still know him as the chubby and lovable comic relief in Catch And Release and Live Free Or Die Hard

Freak Man (some dude), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

By name?

Alba, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:50 (seventeen years ago)

lol, Catch and Release!

Box office prediction and analysis site Boxofficemojo.com pegged Catch and Release for a $4.6 million opening weekend at its 1,622 sites, with Leesmovieinfo.com estimating $5.0 million. The film edged above these expectations and grossed $7,658,898 in its first three days — with Sony indicating that 75% of the audience was female (with 58% being over 25). The pattern of films that rely heavily on its leading ladies having a dominantly female audience can also be seen in pictures like In Her Shoes, Just Like Heaven and Because I Said So, other medium sized box office successes.

The film ended up with a final gross of $15,539,051 in the United States and $456,458 overseas, less than its estimated $25 million budget.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

Right, I'm going to bed. Contributing to this thread is only reminding me off the head-in-hands direness of Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

Alba, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

the contention that Smith , with his generic white American name, has anywhere near the name recognition of Shyamalyan, Fincher, PT Anderson, or Wes Anderson, just judging by box office receipts (and, um, Oscar nominations, I guess) just seems ludicrous to me.

Comic Book Morbius (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't really notice Fincher as a name director until Zodiac.

Wes HI DEREson (HI DERE), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

Actually went home and asked my girlfriend if she knew who Kevin Smith was. She shook her head and o_O'd me. When prompted I told her what films he directed.

GF: Oh, I used to have Clerks on videotape. I lent it to my grampa just before he died. He told me that his favorite part was the bathroom scene, but I thought that was really creepy. Which one was Dogma?

KKVGZ: Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are angels trying to get back into heaven.

GF: Oh, and God turns out to be some girl at the end?

KKVGZ: Alanis Morrisette, yeah.

GF: I can't remember anything called Mallrats

KKVGZ: It probably doesn't matter.

GF: Why are you even asking me this?

KKVGZ: I heard a guy making fun of another guy because his girlfriend didn't know who Kevin Smith was.

Kevin Smith grows obnoxious unless you take him in the lightest of doses. Who did people say was his "band equivalent" a few months ago? Weezer, maybe?

Reservoir Dogs Madonna covo is '92. Clerks is '94.

But "Slacker" was 1991, and the mundane-conversation-effect in general probably originated, at least recently, from Harold Pinter (Mamet was also another immediate influence).

Totally off topic: Apparently he's started a new podcast with Jason Mewes called Jay & Silent Bob Get Old --- my husband was telling me Smith specifically started to keep Mewes clean, since he's not working and I guess he relapsed or something. All I can say is Clerks: The Animated Series is the bomb
Clerks itself was also pretty good

But good lord, Clerks II was one of the biggest piles of garbages I've ever seen in my life. It's like he wrote it as he was filming it. Barffff

Zac & Miri was okay. Solid C- type material. It's kind of weird a director as famous as him would just kind of willingly release a movie with like, no ending

I usually like to go into bat for him, but lately I just feel like his compulsion to explain everything about his life hurts him. This isn't really an injustice...this is called flying. Rich poor, fat, skinny, in the airport we're all assholes and are treated accordingly. Shock horror at not being allowed on the plane 8 minutes before takeoff even WITH a concierge escort...cmon dude.

Plus his wife Jen seems to be one to totally LOSE her shit about stuff like this and I feel like some of that has fed into his airline stuff since everything went down with Southwest. Because from being a longtime fan & listening to everything he talks about for a long time, I know he generally wasn't that guy.

Apparently he's started a new podcast with Jason Mewes called Jay & Silent Bob Get Old --- my husband was telling me Smith specifically started to keep Mewes clean

this is a bit worrying since Smith has become a wake-and-bake stoner himself this year - if Mewes only deals well when he's avoiding any intoxicants whatsoever, Smith putting himself in place as a role model might now be the best timing

This. He's talked a lot over the past year or so about how much pot he smokes every day, acknowledging that he smokes way way way more than he used. I mean, hell, he can't make it thought an hour-long Smodcast without smoking up or breaking down into a huge coughing fit. Not judging him for that, mind, just backing up the claims that he isn't exactly the best role model for someone trying to stay clean.

My main problem with Clerks 2 was the Elias character. I knew the movie was probably going to suck but when I heard there was a nerdly character who loved Lord of the Rings I figured at least Smith could write him well. I mean he's definitely trolled around message boards in the past and I always thought this type of antisocial nerd was the type of character that he's the most familiar with. The result was like, some clumsy dork that does not even for an instant resemble an actual human. He's not just nerdy but actually borderline retarded. Not a single thing he said was funny. If they just scaled back on him a little bit and actually went for a tiny bit of subtlety it would have worked. I mean Revenge of the Nerds was nearly 30 years ago!! The second problem was that he wasn't even the most irritating character, as the LEADS were even more obnoxious and whiny. What an awful film.

Zack & Miri wasn't so bad when I was watching it, but the more you think about it the worse it seems. Like, did they really just film a long scene where a studio burns out and the guys have to recoup everything just as an excuse to make a couple of Star Wars puns. Like nobody ever thought of turning Star Wars into a porno?? The bad part was that it really seemed like the type of movie that should automatically be funny. Porn acting is funny by default. Movies like Orgasmo and Boogie Nights were automatic A+ in my mind so I still can't imagine how Smith blew it so terribly.

frogbs, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:33 (fifteen years ago)

Not defending Clerks 2 as a movie, but living in the US Bible Belt I've encountered several nerds, usually raised by ultra-religious parents, who were actually way more socially awkward and emotionally stunted than the Elias character. I actually didn't find the portrayal in that respect to be inaccurate.

in another universe, since he is kinda funny and gross when doing the family man comedy stuff, i could actually see kevin smith becoming louis ck, but unfortunately he chose george lucas over richard pryor.

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Monday, 20 June 2011 15:25 (fourteen years ago)

george lucas and linklater

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Monday, 20 June 2011 15:25 (fourteen years ago)

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Monday, 20 June 2011 15:26 (fourteen years ago)

"Louie" is closer to a Kevin Smith movie than anyone on this board wants to admit with its DIY DOODZ production values and flimsy first draft writing

people seem pissed at him for saying Spider Man should be nominated for an Oscar, but this has been his persona for 30 years. if there's anyone who I wouldn't roll my eyes at saying that its Kevin Smith
