I know the other thread has only just dipped below the yardarm of the new answers page, but here's one for the NEXT Poptimism night - same place (Downstairs@Polar Bear), same prices, and we're doing one of our Club Popular special #1 hits nights. Expect gimmickry, to be revealed on this thread when we think of it. No James Blunt though! Get it in your diaries you lovely people.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

I'm still going to try and make this, it's my last night in London!

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

hurrah for number ones! (reads: "hurrah for not having to carry a big bag of cds about")

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

And this time we are going on til 2pm, ruin fans.

(Gimmick a) we shall also be playing number ones from the Albania chart too.)

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

if james blunt is number one on september 16th, you HAVE to play it. sorry. them's the rules

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Alan is actually right about the rules. :(

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

gimmick b) number 1 bingo cards - first to get (happy) house gets a quid off a bottle of blossom hill

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

may be skipping this for HDIF this month (i'm planning on doing alternate months of this friday clash of Clubs-I-Go-To) but then again there's 3 of those next month.. who knows!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

2pm? Good god, you people have some stamina.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

I still don't know who james Blunt is. In fact, it's likely that I may not recognize many of the British number ones of the last two years.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

are you joking, Rock?

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Second place gets two quid off (boom boom)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Rock is reading carefully.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

adam is the legendary 25pints-in-the-4-hours man.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Ooh I like the bingo cards, sounds well orga.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

orga? it's only bingo not herbal essences!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to hide around the corner and peer at you all through binoculars as you enter and leave, allowing me to put faces to the names when I read about the drunken tomfoolery the next day.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

well, if you want to do that -there's a secret entrance that goes from elsewhere in lisle street that would lead you through a tunnel and then to a backroom of poptimism's venue!!

(this is the truth!!!! i was stuck inside there for half an hour one time!)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

dance like this, people:

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Oh fickle Schnappi :(

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 25 August 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

I think that "rules" can be waived in times of extreme crisis, i.e. even "I See The Moon" would be preferable to James C*nt ("I kiss the rose..." "No, not yet").

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 25 August 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

We can barely keep track of whose bottle of blossom hill is whose. What makes you think that we can keep track of bingo cards?

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Thursday, 25 August 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

Tom, as this is a Club Popular night, will there be "No Charge" for bingo cards?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 25 August 2005 07:09 (twenty years ago)

I doubt very much that Jimmy Cunt will reascend to #1. Looking at the upcoming release schedules, your #1 single for this night could well be either "Fix You" by Coldplay" or "D.A.R.E." by Gorillaz

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 25 August 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

or schnappi, it's been put back to 5 sept i think...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 25 August 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

B*Witched: The Difficult Second Album Tour

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 25 August 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

B*Witched had FOUR count 'em number ones but I'd almost rather hear 'Jump Down' at this. Perhaps in October...

two weeks pass...
hi dere, this is next week, hurrah!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

I think our number one will be the Pussycat Dolls.!

Pete (Pete), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Your DJing line up is myself, Pete, Carsmile and Tim 'Popkins'.

Requests ahoy.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

I'll come if you play Star Trekin'.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

PLAY THE JAZZ!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

we are whores and will play almost anything.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

You have to play the Tori Alamaze version of 'Don't Cha', not the heinous Pussycat Dolls one!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Do you have "99 Dead Baboons"?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

the model, stand and deliver, ghost town, tainted love, jack your body, beetlebum, theme from s-express, you really got me, i feel love

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

GOODIES

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Ed (dali), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

metal number ones

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 September 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Jerry Keller- Here Comes Summer!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 9 September 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

not exactly topical for september though is it ;)

ferever autumn didn't get to number one though...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Saturday, 10 September 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

Actually it's very suitable, it's got a real wistful end-of-Summer vibe, I will definitely play it.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 10 September 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

bugger, i'll miss this due to tune-spinning duties at hedonistic. matt dc may well have the same issue if he's playing at seal.

mind you, if you lot go on til 2am, maybe i can swing by later...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 10 September 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Some "older" stuff that we "oldies" might like to hear at some stage in the proceedings:

Mouldy Old Dough, Get Down, Tower Of Strength, Begin The Beguine, Telstar, Doctorin' The Tardis, 3AM Eternal, Your Woman, Because We Want To, Have I The Right, Lovesick Blues, Rubber Bullets, Son Of My Father, Always Yours.

I am aware that some of these may fall into the "experimental" slot, i.e. when outside punters come in at 8:15 and hear Kate Bush's "The Dreaming"...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 12 September 2005 05:51 (twenty years ago)

In order:

Yes, played it last time but maybe, maybe, !!!, yes, not while the TV series isn't on, every time, yes, see Timelords, YES, good one, not on my watch, yes, I've forgotten what this even IS!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 12 September 2005 08:13 (twenty years ago)

haha ASHES TO ASHES!!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 12 September 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

Er, yes, very good, what a shame Dinah Washington's "September In The Rain" didn't get to the top...

"Always Yours"? The third and last number one for the double G (if you don't count "Doctorin' The Tardis").

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 12 September 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

The Only Way Is Up

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 12 September 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

And definitely 'Dreadlock Holiday', for those of us who still don like cricket-a.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 12 September 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

Nelly ft Tim McGraw - Over And Over

Tom (Groke), Monday, 12 September 2005 08:50 (twenty years ago)

My issue is more needing to avoid being hungover the next day, rather than which club I'll attend. (Probably Poptimism, I don't know).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 12 September 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

Moderate your bouzing as you would ILE.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 12 September 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

And definitely 'Dreadlock Holiday', for those of us who still don like cricket-a.

You love it-a?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Monday, 12 September 2005 08:56 (twenty years ago)

"It was meant to be ironic-a!" quipped Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman in front of the tribunal.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 12 September 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

I keep getting Erasure's 'Take A Chance On Me' in my head a lot lately so maybe that is another optional exorcism.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 12 September 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

Aargh, apart from Ebenezer Goode were there ANY decent number ones in 1992?

(Must admit that I do like Would I Lie To You? but that's one for the smoochers, and I don't suppose we get many slowies at Poptimism...)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 12 September 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

'Rhythm Is A Dancer'.

I like the Abba-Esque EP. I find it difficult to fault 'Ain't No Doubt' other than the fact it's by Jimmy Nail.

'Would I Lie To You' may have been played at Popular before, can't remember. I expect it would go down very well indeed.

I still want to hear what 'Game Boy' by KWS sounds like.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 12 September 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

I find it difficult to fault 'Ain't No Doubt' other than the fact it's by Jimmy Nail.

Yes, that was the fault I found with it ("She's lying. I'm hamming."). Otherwise it's a great record; if it had been Saint Etienne everyone would praise it to the skies.

And indeed how could I forget "I'M AS SERIOUS AS CANCER" at number one for six weeks?

"Deeply Dippy" if RSF are still hip?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 12 September 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

"She's lying" = "I'm PM Dawn bloke all of a sudden"

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 12 September 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

"PM Dawn" = "I sincerely hope we're not going to get True."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 12 September 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

I won't be able to turn up until late anyway not because I'm going to the grime night but because I'll be working and probably can't skive this time :(

Also the hedonism of the past few weeks => this is my weekend off.

Can someone play 'Professional Widow' please? And 'More Than A Woman'? But not til I get there kthxbye.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 12 September 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

This is the move-to-Streatham weekend for me - my presence is all but required elsewhere.

BARMS, Monday, 12 September 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

Barima, drop me a text when you're done moving! If you want company, I can show you the (little) funs there are to be had in St. Reatham's Parish!

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Monday, 12 September 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

Move-to-Streatham weekend?

B-b-but I don't owe you any money!!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 12 September 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

I would like to dissociate myself from most of Marcello's requests for us oldies. Except for 3am Eternal and Son Of My Father. I think if I ever do a Popular set, I will be tempted to play entirely glam. (This perhaps guarantees I will never play one.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

It guarantees you will play one NEXT TIME!!

I wuv glam. I understand though that the Young Folk do not see its appeal.

(My sample of Young Folk = Starry, Teh Lex)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

Glam is good for the GLAM DESCENDS!!!

(However, do you count the Stooges as Glam? I say Raw Power is, and one of the tracks from that album was on Dare's Glam Rock Compilation, though we were told to TURN IT DOWN as Iggy was trying to sleep next door.)

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

surely all the kids are into glammmm these days, with the 'frapp and that. also that new FF song i heard on ToTP had a t-rex-ish thing going on (granted i wasn't listening too closely)

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

The Stooges/Glam question is kind of moot on a #1s night!

(I think some of their stuff was, I don't like Raw Power tho so I've never given it much thought.)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

nb i am not a glam rock cop

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

It guarantees you will play one NEXT TIME!!

I was assuming this was the next one, and nothing to do with number ones!

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

I will happily play lots of Sweet, T Rex and Gary Glitter. Though i don't approve of the latters lifestyle.

Was In The Year 2525 a number one. Cos that is the bomb.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

If man is still alive...

IF WOMAN CAN SURVIVE

(yes)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

I would like to dissociate myself from most of Marcello's requests for us oldies. Except for 3am Eternal and Son Of My Father. I think if I ever do a Popular set, I will be tempted to play entirely glam. (This perhaps guarantees I will never play one.)

-- Martin Skidmore (lonewolf.cu...), September 12th, 2005.

I don't think I'll go with the 1974 theme when my turn comes around - I road tested some stuff over the weekend and Them Kids Today are going to find it awkward to bop to.

Nonetheless my "oldies" list, if not necessarily for the benefit of the good Martin, is also on behalf of the non-ILxor friends of mine who will be coming along with me on Friday and are of equivalent age.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

I think people should try to bring in toys, puzzles and sparkly things to keep me occupied on the door. And sushi. Or cash donations for my 'fund'.

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

In the long run we want to do at least one Sunday Poptimism event where the more 'listening' end of the taste spectrum can be displayed. But this has been a plan for ages without us ever doing something about it.

xpost I will bring a Pocketeer.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

pete, as i'm sure i've mentioned a dozen times, in the year 2525 went to number one the day after i was born. i.e. it was the best selling single when i was born, even though rolling stones were actually number one at that point

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

(also i played it at club popular innit)

Britain's Jauntiest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone find it more difficult to dance to Gary Glitter songs now then?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

What does that mean?

Raston Warrior Robot (alix), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

Yes Alan, I knew that, that's why I pretended not to know to annoy you.

Its all fun and games around here.

Sunday Poptimism is a terrible name. It should be called something like "Sitting Round The Fire With Uncle Freakytrigger". Or Hungovertimism.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

There was a Gary Glitter song on Dare's comp. It was a bit weird listening to "do you want to touch me? Where? there!" and trying not to flinch.

But what amazed me most was how minimal the arrangement was. I really liked it as a piece of music.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

I don't see people having difficulty dancing to R Kelly or Michael Jackson, if that's what you mean.

(stevem xpost)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

As for Sundays - "Sunday Studium"?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

I don't see people having difficulty dancing to R Kelly or Michael Jackson, if that's what you mean.

That's not necessarily a 'no' re Gary Glitter.

I have always found dancing to R Kelly difficult anyway. And Jacko remains 'innocent'.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

"Our Replacement For The Church OF England"

Pete (Pete), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

Bit elephantine that, not too snappy.

They never say that once I've finished with the limb-breaking...people today, never wanting to give you their pay packets.

bARMS, Monday, 12 September 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

i wouldn't recommend that you try it

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 12 September 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

I will be attending, with strong jetlag and a Super Friends t-shirt.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 12 September 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

Well, I've just found out that I have to be back in Leeds on Monday because that's when term restarts, and we are apparently having 'issues' with our accommodation, so this weekend's gonna be a shitter. As such, I'm definitely gonna be at this, and will probably consume upwards of one measure of whisky and coke. Possibly two.

Would 'Israelites' go amiss? I should think not.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Slack Sabbath?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

already is one of those: http://www.slacksabbath.com/

(or was that your point?)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

Uncle Tom's Cabin?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

yes, that's much better :)

Come to the Sabbat
Satan (or Tom) Is there.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

That song is so getting played at Devil's Poptimism.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

Is that going to be the October one? Bit early for Halloween, surely? If you want lots of suggestions for appropriate records, let me know.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

Every day is Halloween!

Smug and Pious (kate), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

No it was something I just made up!

There's no theme for October really.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

good idea though innit?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

It's be a good idea if it were a week or two later. Mid-Oct, not especially.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

I might play Satan's Set.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

Don't know them...are they Swedish?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

An all Swedish Poptimism. Now that really would be the greatest thing ever.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

Tom, can we play the Number 1 Song In Heaven by Sparks, as it was number one in heaven.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

But it was only number 12 in Britain.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Surely somebody somewhere has written a 'Number One Song In Hell' to counter/compliment it?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

Actually, seeing as it didn't get played last night, Starlight's 'Numero Uno' should qualify for Friday on a technicality.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

last night = last time

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

number 1 in italy?

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

If Tom is playing Satan's Set, The I will play Heaven's Hitlist and let's see which is better.

Mind you, Heaven's Hitlist would have Angels in it, which already give Hell a head start.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

We can't waive the rules! Otherwise we'd have to let in "(Call Me) Number One" by the Tremeloes and "Say I'm Your Number One" by Princess!

Saintimism is a grebt idea for October. Make it so.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

OMG THEY STOLE MY IDEA

Brighton though? Hmmm. Do I need to go that far just to hear 'It Takes A Fool To Remain Sane'?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

And they have Kopparbergs Cider! OK I really ought to go to this...

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to this one, i think

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

i'll stick it on the rolling dancing thread.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

It's a great idea, the tracklist seems a bit too Cardigans and not enough Alcazar for me tho.

Kopparbergs is lovely but I couldnt imagine it as a session drink.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

they def. need The Zar and The Ark on that playlist.

Kopparbergs all night = Glasto style ruin, hopefully...

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

robyn + the knife is NOT ENOUGH

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

i'd insist they play 'No Coke' too.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Alcazartimism plz

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

OK the Swedish Set it is for October.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

Get in.

Blossom Hill will mash your life (Matt DC), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

i'm excited about this! i'm showing my face at a housewarming party first, but will be along, i think with jimd and ledge. yay! (double yay for number ones night!)

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

T&G were supposed to come to this with me but damn blast Tuner are playing at the Spitz on Friday, supporting Damo Suzuki, and I've sort of run out of excuses not to go and see them so I'm probably going to do that instead, though we might pop by later on if there's time.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 08:35 (twenty years ago)

Well we're on until 2 so plenty of time MC! It sounds like there's going to be quite the influx later on in the night.

(I'm glad that said "T&G" not "TG")

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

Bright Eyes by Art Garfunkle.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

garfunkEL, shirley :)

i think we have played this before, possibly as kicking out music...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

I like it, it is about bunnies.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

definitely been played - i seem to recall a special "bunny bounding in slow motion" dance

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

I also like it, it's the missing link between the Wombles and the Cocteau Twins.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

What is this "grime night" to which Lex is referring?

Me and Beanz may be bringing a small crew with us...is this allowed?

Also will you play 5ive for my wife (did 5ive make number one?)?

Adam in Edgware (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

Did "Don't Call Me Baby" make number one? She likes that too.

Adam in Edgware (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

The crewier the merrier.

5ive will surely be played, they're on the free CD too (if I actually manage to do the free CD).

Dont Call Me Baby did make it, request it on the night.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

Who has the POP / INDIE stick.

More gimmicks.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

thanks! :)

Adam in Edgware (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

Shall I make you another POP/ INDIE stick?

Alix (alix), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

I have the POP/INDIE stick, I'm not sure it's appropriate for Popular though cos it's ALL pop (by definition!).

The WHEEL OF DECADES would be better.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

Flava by Peter Andre is indie.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

Another adjective springs to mind.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

tom, you've had three weeks to make the "whell of decades"*, have you not done it yet?

*very old skool #sinister reference there

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

I am going to try to wangle something with our print department and some of the polyboard we use for presentations. So fingers crossed!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

How about a charity fundraising singles set? Band Aid 2, Ferry Aid... And of course The Christians, Holly Johnson, Paul McCartney, Gerry Marsden and Stock Aitken & Waterman doing Ferry Cross The Mersey.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

Great idea except they're all unlistenable!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:31 (twenty years ago)

Touché...

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

tom's just pissed off that the "save dr who" single didn't get to number one :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

It's No.1 all over Skaro

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

which is why the entire skaro solar system was destroyed

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if it's even possible for me to go to Poptimism, have one or two drinks, and then go home at a reasonable hour.

Perhaps I should ask ::gasp:: them to put some football on, as that seems to do the trick.

Ancients of LAUTRO (kate), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

We can simulate the effect by playing "Back Home" and "Three Lions" Kate?

UB40 - Pink Pink Wine

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

Ah, now if you're moving into footballing number ones you have to have Man Utd duetting with Status Quo in 1994.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

If you play World In Motion I might have to explode with conflicted notions.

"But it's Barney! Yum!"
"But it's football... eeeuuuwww!"
"But it's Barney!"
"But it's..."
::POP!::

Ancients of LAUTRO (kate), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

I think World In Motion has been played at all 3 previous Popular nights, this is no guarantee it won't be played on Friday.

Kate do you know all the words to the John Barnes rap?

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

Of course I don't. >:-(

Ancients of LAUTRO (kate), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

(This is not a request, BTW, and I don't think it got to number one anyway.)

Ancients of LAUTRO (kate), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty bored of 'World In Motion' - it's not even a World Cup year. At least nobody ever plays 'Three Lions' anymore.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

I have made the WHEEL OF POP.

(It is rubbish).

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I will bring a single that reached number one in Kazakhstan!

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Some enthusisatic dicussion about Friday lead to this: bring on the Turtle Power! We demand to hear the Partners in Kryme!

Magnus A, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

i'm just wondering whether a swedish pop evening would scare off potential outside punters.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 15 September 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

Our Chairman WROTE a song that was #1 in Kazakhstan. Admittedly it was by Gina G and was the follow up to Ooh Aah (Just A Little Bit) and I still can't for the life of me remember what it was called.

(Hasn't Turtle Power been played at EVERY Popular, despite no one actually liking it very much?)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 September 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

It's pretty bizarre reading that list of number ones and realising that I did actually play some when I DJ'd without even knowing.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Thursday, 15 September 2005 07:02 (twenty years ago)

Turtle Power is a ghastly record, symptomatic of the odd pattern of number ones in 1990, where the first half of the year was full of classics and the second half degenerated into a farrago of tacky novelties and film/TV ad themes.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 15 September 2005 07:04 (twenty years ago)

I will have had to leave the house at 6.45am, and will be working on sat too, but I shall come along for as long as I can keep awake, probably suited and booted too, what joy.

I just looked to see what was no.1 around this time in previous years, but gave it up as a bad job when the first three I came across were bob the builder, atomic kitten with 'the tide is high', and black eyed peas with 'where is the love'...

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 15 September 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

If you'd gone back one more year you'd have had Modjo's "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)"

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 15 September 2005 07:39 (twenty years ago)

Adam - what time will you be getting there?

I have no idea what tine this starts, but "about 9:30" was being floated around last night.

Which means 10 o'clock.

Adam in Edgware (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 September 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

Also, can it be true that "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" is Prince's ONLY UK number one (not counting songs he wrote for other people)? Shocking.

Adam in Edgware (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 September 2005 07:53 (twenty years ago)

All participants in the Turtle Power debate are correct! viz

- It does get played every time.
- It is rubbish.
- It will get played again no doubt despite this.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

I like Turtle Power. I thought I was the only one to have played it.

How does a song being rubbish stop it getting played at Poptimism?? Answer: SHUT UP

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

Adam, we'll be starting around SEVEN or so (note to self: really actually go and have some food before we start this time you muppet)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:35 (twenty years ago)

what is this turtle power? not related to cat power, i'm guessing, since it's on the number ones page?

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:35 (twenty years ago)

Didn't they have Ninja Turtles in Kalamazoo?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

It sounds like things will be fairly sparse until 9-9.30 so it's a great opportunity to play some of the 'less celebrated' hits.

xpost no you're right it's Cat Power's sister.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

Note to self: Don't have chinese buns for supper, they make you sleepy and lethargic.

Actually, proper dinner before clubbing always makes me sleepy and lethargic. Or perhaps it's just this "clubbing on a Friday after a week of exhaustion and sleep deprivation" thing which is madness.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:38 (twenty years ago)

-- Adam in Edgware (adamr...), September 15th, 2005.

This is indeed true, yes.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

Even more shocking is the fact that Stevie Wonder's only UK number one as a solo artist (i.e. not counting Ebony And Ivory or We Are The World, or songs he wrote and/or produced for other people, or cameo appearances, e.g. There Must Be An Angel) is I Just Called To Say I Love You.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. There has been talk of doing a special US #1s night to redress some of these imbalances but the idea hits a problem when you enter the Mariah/Boyz II Men era.

At some point - maybe next March - we will do Club Slightly Less Popular with the #2s tho!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

Devaluation surely!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

yes, but the ninja turtles had vanilla ice's 'ninja rap' (which meant that he didn't turn up to the kalamazoo show on devil's night, as he was recording it, the bastard).

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

At some point - maybe next March - we will do Club Slightly Less Popular with the #2s tho!

now that would be a good idea, though obv avoid any dodgy punning title apropos A Load Of Number 2s, etc.

Yeah. There has been talk of doing a special US #1s night to redress some of these imbalances but the idea hits a problem when you enter the Mariah/Boyz II Men era.

there's nothing wrong with mariah OR boyz ii men! they're better than bloody turtle power anyway.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

Motownphilly is good. Presumably though you can keep everyone happy with 'Candy Girl'.

I still don't understand the Turtle Power hate, esp. from people who are more than happy to do the Schnappi dance and what have you.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

US No. 1s - it's all Eddie Rabbitt and Eddie Money and other people called Eddie you've never hear of

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

I think there might be a list of US no. 1's somewhere on the interweb. It's a tough call as to whether their early 90s dominated by NJS, rap and variants beats the rave-pop heavy UK's.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 15 September 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 15 September 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

I take it that it's not a very subtle wine, i.e. it gets you pissed after two sips/swigs? (xpost)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 15 September 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Did she REALLY get pregnant in Preston?

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 15 September 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

No no no no no.

It was while WATCHING Preston. In Crewe.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 15 September 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

It's probably Goldie's baby, so play some Goldie!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 15 September 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Goldie's never had a number one so we can't play him

(bump)

see what i did there?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 September 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

Crewe Spears?

I thought they were calling him London?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 16 September 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

Please please let it be Brockley.

NB "Brockley Spears" is a vintage Mooro joke for which I can take no credit, but he should take a great deal.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 16 September 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

What should I eat before the club? Chinese buns were a bad idea, but I'm sick of Cornish pasties. Something light and not too filling, but filling enough to cushion my stomach for the blow of all the pink wine I shall be pouring on top of it.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

ho fun with black bean sauce. worked for me the last time

ken c (ken c), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

with the added advantage of being able to tell people you just had some HO FUN before you went to the club, in soho.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

I remembered to bring the Kazahk No.1. Rakhat T with 'One Little Reason'.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

What's Ho Fun, and can I get a veggie version?

The Brocade Fire (kate), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

Rocking Khazak action!!!

When I woke up this morning my hair formed itself into a natural mohican. I would play some punk but there are not real punk number ones. Therefore I will play 2 Unlimited as it is closest.

Also remember only the urinals are working in the mens toilets.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

How far does this number ones list go? I mean, to keep up my Regency Theme, can I request the 1812 Overture which would surely have been number one for the entire Napoleonic Wars?

The Brocade Fire (kate), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN WAS THE MORAL NUMBER ONE IN JUBLIEE WEEK

Lonnie Donegan and the Prodigy are closer to punk.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

The Guinness Book lists "Rat Trap" as "the first punk number one" Pete!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

Also remember only the urinals are working in the mens toilets.

If you could announce this on the mic whilst playing George Michael's 'Fastlove' I would really appreciate it.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

I think "Float On" might be more appropriate if they're not...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

Well at least it fits in with the theme.

Punk saxophones!
(Actually is there any reasons why saxophones can't be punk?)

Pete (Pete), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

ho fun is flat rice noodles! it's intrinsically veggie! (unless you have it with beef, which is the norm)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

Not really. (xpost)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

Oooh! Ho fun with tofu, that would be good.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

HIT ME WITH YOUR RHYTHM STICK RE. PUNK SAX

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

I have trouble think of ver Blockheads as punk - surely they invented Jazz Funk. (Admittedly Ian Dury, pretty punXor). Also a number one though yay, pre Rat Trap?

Pete (Pete), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

i don't think they INVENTED jazz funk...but HMWYRS did spring to my mind re punk sax too. Obv. the answer is to play it tonight at about 9.47pm and we'll say how many chairs get broken, or something.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

say = see

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

Rhythm Stick was number one about two months after Rat Trap.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

Pity. Well it is clearly a better song whatever.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

Blockheads = pub jazz-funk, it's well known.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 16 September 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

i hope i do not need to remind tom that SCHNAPPI was number one in germany.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

But Tim, Dury himself as a certain punk rep non?

Actually one thing I like about Popular is that Schnappi doesn't qualify. BRING ON THE TURTLES.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

are the rules that it has to be a UK no 1? BOO.

i'm sure schnappi will qualify next time.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

i hope i do not need to remind tom that SCHNAPPI was number one in germany.
-- The Lex

Right. You do know that you all looked like you were on German MTV or Viva! or something whilst dancing to that? It was like turning on the TV in a mainland European hotel room and watching people shout at each other and run around to awful bombastic Euro pop, before starting to moon each other and throw pies accompanied by hillarious sound effects. And you sit on the bed feeling utterly lost and eat the crackers from the mini-bar and then Nickleback! Live! Yah! comes on.

Am I projecting here?

Anna (Anna), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

Steve yes, though I don't see what that has to do with it (lots of people with a certain punk rep are pub-something).

Tim (Tim), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

i think you are definitely projecting, anna! i think you secretly wanted to join in!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:18 (twenty years ago)

xpost: What it has to do with it = saxophone on a record fronted by a guy with a certain punk rep 'proves' that punk and sax are not completely incompatible, to attempt to answer Pete's original question.

Schnappi = Mr Blobby. Tho when I accidentally played the latter at Popular for about 10 seconds, strangely no-one danced! Perhaps it's just cos The Lex wasn't there all Blossomed up.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

"All Blossomed Up!" = the best new euphemism yet. (apart from pork steeple, but that's another story.)

The Brocade Fire (kate), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm not going to get too blossomed up tonight because I won't be there until v late and there won't be time.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

PORK STEEPLE?!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

That sounds like something out of Hollyoaks.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

Aparently it's from the Bloodhound Gang but I have trouble believing that as it's rather too witty for them.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

have you heard their new one? omg wtf etc.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

Really Alex, no, trust me on this one.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 16 September 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

Bah, no-one did my punchline to the toilets joke.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 16 September 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

Anna, are you sure you're not mixing up Poptimism with Chanel 9 Neus Out Of The Fast Show when they did one of their musical specials, Crazy Nights and Lazy Days, etc.?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 September 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

oh hold on, sorry:

so, it's only numbers ones and no numbers twos then

"roffle"

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 16 September 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

Bloody hell, young people today and all that: for punk saxophone the key person is Lora Logic of X-Ray Spex! Also I once went out with a woman who had gone out with her temporary stand-in saxophonist in the band! Unfortunately this is all a bit moot what with them not getting that near a #1 spot.

Dury was pub-rock and new wave, but not punk. One of my favourite live performers ever!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 16 September 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

(xpost)

i pissed myself at that remark see what i did there

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 16 September 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

i was just gonna say that about lora logic

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Friday, 16 September 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

there's always The Zutons...

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

In my world, there is never the Zutons, and that's what makes my world so damn great.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 16 September 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

Too bad for you (and perhaps all of us) that 'Place Your Hands' didn't top the chart.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

Tim, it was good to see the Brockley joke revived one more time.

Is this a club night that I could, or should, go to? Who is going, and where is it?

the bellefox, Friday, 16 September 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

YES.

it will be fun. all the usual suspects will be there i'm sure.

it is at the polar bear on lisle street behind leicester square, here:

http://www.fancyapint.com/main_site/thepubs/pub2423.htm

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

I hope that bitch Adam turns up.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

Pinefox you should go! It is a club night that plays only #1 records from the 50s to the 00s. You will like at least some of the music, though by no means all.

Lots of people you know will be there.

It is in the Polar Bear, 30 Lisle Street, Leicester Square tube is about 1 minute away.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

What is the pinefox's favourite #1 single of modern times? I genuinely am curious to know.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

It's got to be Tony Di Bart hasn't it?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Nim nim nim

Tom (Groke), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Oh, you said pinefox

Tom (Groke), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

I think it will be the Cha Cha Slide.

suckling pig at a rave (alix), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

omg has that really been a #1?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

yeh, don't you remember it was played at the last Popular, or were you elsewhere?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

What counts as 'modern times'?

First possible post-2000 answer: Daniel Bedingfield, 'If You're Not The One'.

In 1990s: U2, 'The Fly', Oasis, 'Some Might Say'.

the firefox, Friday, 16 September 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

-- Sociah T Azzahole (stevem7...), September 16th, 2005 3:37 PM. (blueski) (later) (link)

i lose track of when it was a popular or FT.. i mean, they all look the same.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

thanks pinefox :)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

i lose track of when it was a popular or FT.. i mean, they all look the same.

you can't remember several chiXors doing the whole dance routine to this song (which had cleared the floor with the first notes?).

it was so fun, but i know it can never be recreated, so i won't ask for it again!

colette (a2lette), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

yes i would like it not to be played, for the same reasons as colette you understand...

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

What time are people getting there? I don't want to be the first person in the door, but I can leave here at any time and I'm getting bored of OKC.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I suppose everyone is already left. Maybe I should just go shopping first.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

See you later

beanz (beanz), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Was Queen's "other" No.1 played?..... flamenco and all?........

JTS, Friday, 16 September 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

ugh. sorry all, had good intentions to come but when I got out of work was so tired/grumpy/hungry/cold that all I could contemplate was coming home :(

hope a good time was had by all.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 16 September 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Left early, being old and tired and all that, but it was a tremendous night - good crowd, including lots of non-ILX people as well as many of my favourite ILXers, lots of joyous dancing, including a genuinely crowded dancefloor.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 16 September 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

Gosh, it was ever so slightly rammed, no?

(left early due to feeling quite dog rough for no apparent reason other than lack of food and sleep and urrrgh. 4 and a half hours on the coach on Sunday. See you in December, kiddies...)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 17 September 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

How DOES the light that burns so brightly suddenly burn SO pale? It almost makes me cry. Or...How does that girl, who I didn't even fancy much, but who (I'm SURE) kept trying to pull me, SUDDENLY go "nah, forget it, back off"...?

Ooh, I'm still very drunk. But drunk enough to have learned that, if you're the last customer of the night in our local chicken house, they'll give you everything they've got left (4 pieces of fried chicken) for everything YOU've got left (£1.40). This is worth remembering.

JimD (JimD), Saturday, 17 September 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

(ooh, btw, it was lovelyto see daniel. And GREAT to be consistently dancing with cis. And very very nice to see various others of you).

JimD (JimD), Saturday, 17 September 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

I was there. Spoke to several ILXors whose identity I can no longer recall. A 10 second conversation with Stevem. Harangued various DJs until they played Adam Ant / S-Express. Mrs HoBB had (some) fun.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Saturday, 17 September 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Teh highlight: The Reflex. Or maybe The Sun Always Shines on TV,

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Saturday, 17 September 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

Or maybe Doop.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Saturday, 17 September 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

oof.

emsk ( emsk), Saturday, 17 September 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

ha, you looked almost incapacitated by about 10, Emma!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 17 September 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

incapacitated - NEVAH! i was um regenerating. er, we drank a couple of bottles at home/on the way and i forgot to eat dinner again, hence ruin. hurrah!

emsk ( emsk), Saturday, 17 September 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

Regenerating in the Dr Who sense? An entirely new body looked the only way you would be able to make your way home!

i have pigeonlike homing device.

emsk ( emsk), Saturday, 17 September 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

dancing! so many people!

doop practically killed me, I love that song but I have no idea how people in the twenties survived the charleston boom. And, Jim, we should dance more often! I realised on the way home that there was no 'thunderbirds' (which I swear I've have danced to at every clubft/poptimism since whenever it was released), but Matt and I still got our busted-jumping kicks so it's all good. :) even with NO STAGE bah.

spontine (cis), Saturday, 17 September 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

so, it was good then? tell me what i missed.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 17 September 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

emsk ( emsk), Saturday, 17 September 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm really sorry I couldn't make it last night. Photos?

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Saturday, 17 September 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

oh dear...

or maybe not "oh dear"! Colette commented on Friday that I "look cute when I'm happy"! :-) Well, why not? It was a very fine evening indeed. Took me a little time to warm up, but there's nothing like a bit of "Mouldy Old Dough" to goad me into hot dancefloor action ahem.

Highlight was obv my highly original "Eye Of The Tiger" routine (I thought of stripping down to the boxer shorts for maximum pseudo-Stallone impact but wisely thought better of it) including unexpected cameo by Ktee G as World's Strongest Woman ;-)

What else to say? I danced with just about everybody and vice versa and had a damn good time. Hot on the heels of an extremely crappy month it was, to say the least, a tonic.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 19 September 2005 07:10 (twenty years ago)

I had a fantastic time despite early exit. Good to see Adam again, but I'm sorry I missed Jamie - come to another FAP soon.

What on earth did they do to my stage? Make them put it back.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 September 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

There were an awful lot of people in attendance whom I didn't know at all but it didn't seem to matter - everyone was v. friendly.

And yes, the stage - reinstate plz.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 19 September 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

I wish I'd stuck to my original plan of having a few drinks and leaving early. Damn that cheap pink wine. :-(

But for once The Lex wasn't the drunkest person there! Sorry for becoming an aggressive drunk but I was trying to keep people from stepping on Emsk when she decided to take a nap in the middle of the dance floor. ("She's fine, she does this!" let her sleep for 20 minutes then force feed her cold water and she will bounce back up.) And then suddenly I just wanted to kick everyone in sight. Fortunately the wall took the brunt of it.

Completely wrote off the next day, no Nelson and no party. :-(

I think I should just not go to these in the future; I can't control my drinking. I don't remember a thing that gets played and I get the paranoids that there's always one person at these things that ruins everything and lately it's me.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Monday, 19 September 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

That was Good. Thanks. Hi again to everyone I didn't meet properly and sorry for the early departure

beanz (beanz), Monday, 19 September 2005 07:47 (twenty years ago)

Thankyou everyone for coming, I wrote a longer thing here. It was good!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 19 September 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

and a bunch of people did the cha cha slide! that was fun as well.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 19 September 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

We tempted the WRATH of the gods of pop by not playing the Pussycat Dolls (the CD was shonky), however this just means we can play the indie version next month and make the Lex happy.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 19 September 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

CD tracklisting details.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 19 September 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

cd should be CDDB'ed as well, although as i did them the same time as the shonky "new stuff" cd i'd be happy enough to know that they worked...

i heart that picture of me :)

They played 'The Fly'.

the blissfox, Monday, 19 September 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Hi!

I have a load of work to do and I'm jetlagged but it was nice to meet people. I saw the Pinefox dancing and I urinated next to Tom and I chatted with Gareth about Estonian town planning...I don't think I actually have any ambitions left to fulfil now.

Can I just point out that I am extremely grateful for THIS PICTURE:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v229/rob_brennan/ilx/Pop5.jpg

As it prominently contains four of my friends who joined me that evening (yellow t-shirt, glasses, two ladies on the far right). I would also like to apologize to the girl with the dark hair and Smash Hits t-shirt (are you an ILXer? Do I know you? If so, even more apologies) for my friend Ben's presumably lame attempt to chat you up!

Who was the girl in the white shirt? She was nice.

Her name's N*tascha (well, not actually, she doesn't have a "*" in her name, but I figure googleproofing is common courtesy, even when it's rather useless.) She took a shine to my hat, before taking a shine to Jim, thus I know (dunno anything else, tho.)

(ooh, btw, it was lovelyto see daniel. And GREAT to be consistently dancing with cis. And very very nice to see various others of you).

This is true (which is to say, it was lovely to see Jim, and GREAT to dance with cis. I probably wouldn't have gotten to the dancefloor on the first place if it hadn't been for her.)

oh wow, i had such a fun time! although i don't exactly remember the end bit and how i got home, but really really enjoyed the music.

"Bright Eyes" was played and then we all went off and you stopped to talk to Lixi and I babbled something and asked her if she had had to stay in that box all night and she was like "I had toilet breaks" and you were like "she danced a lot!" Then on the street some guy tried to sell us a magazine with Sir Paul McCartney on the cover (Jim gave him the cash, but refused the mag.) Then you went off, and a short while after that Jim disappeared as well cos he got stuck talking to some drunken person (seems to happen a lot), and Tom (who I had previously thought was named Toby) managed to get me to the strand, which was v nice of him.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

Those aren't apostrophes.

they are helping distinguish between the word "OOs" and the period of time the 00's

though why there is an s'06 (upside down 90's) and WHY ARE THE ZEROs on the outside and big when the differentiating decadal number is smaller and on the inside

all reasons that the wheel is teh genius

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:16 (twenty years ago)

there's a picture i took on my phone, which i'd upload and post right now if i had the know-how (taken at brixton academy), of an A4 poster advertising "disposable camera's £5".

i asked the girl behind the counter if she had any tippex. without a word, she delved beneath the counter and produced some! thinking she understood my plans, i took the top off and went for the poster, at which point she said "you can't do that!".

i said, "but it's WRONG!" and she said, "it's not my responsibility, i only do the t-shirts" and i replied, "then you won't mind if i correct it". she said, "i can't let you do that," and i said, "but doesn't it get to you?".

"i don't give a fuck, to be honest," she repied, and that was that. this is what we Trussians have to deal with.

i was teh drunk, unsurprisingly.

i only read bits very quickly because it's a stinker of a book, but i thought i recalled truss's list of acceptable uses of apostrophes as explicitly including the decade apostrophe - somewhere near the discussion of do's and don't's. truss can eat a bag of dicks. fowler is where it's at

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

The decade apostrophe is only acceptible at the start.

'90s is fine.

90's is not.

(and please don't point it out pedantically if I've mispelled accetpable or anything else in this post.)

The Brocade Fire (kate), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

"I like Joe 90's new glasses"

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

when i was an editor i removed apostrophes in 90's and i was surprised when the annoying truss said it was ok, which is why i remember (or seem to remember) that bit.

the problem with being an editor is that you not only have to correct for clarification but to minimise COMPLAINTS from ANNOYING PEDANTS WHO ARE ACTUALLY WRONG WHEN THEY SAY A PARTICULR USAGE IS UNACCAPTABLE

there are still people who complain about split infiinitives. these people want locking up

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

"To boldly go where no man has gone before."

End of split infinitive argument, I think we can agree.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

90s should be the unacceptable one, "nineties" doesn't mean plurals of the number "ninety" after all. The contraction 90's (cf don't, isn't etc.) is flawed but preferable.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

90s especially doesn't work when style would require all caps: 90S

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Those Joe 90'S specs aren't as good as the ones worn by that bloke out of the Buggle'S!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to come to one of these one day, but I just don't think I'm ironic enough. At least not unless I'm so drunk I can no longer speak, at which point I become a deeply ironic arsehole who nobody likes.

So best to stay in and watch Bromwell High, on the whole.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure that irony has anything to do with it.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

i've been thinking of adding "irony free" alongside "guilt free" on the flyers. i think it's something people need to know

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

AFAIC irony has bugger all to do with it. I dance to stuff at Poptimism cos a) I like it and b) it's fun*. Other people might have a different take on it, mind.

x-post: I think that wd be a good idea, Alang.

(*dancing is a lot more than fun, aye, but that's all too complicated to go into here)

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

I don't even know what 'irony' means in these kind of conversations anymore.

I think some of the music I like is very funny, does that make me ironic? Who knows?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

<gritted teeth>there's no fucking irony involved</gritted teeth>

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

I think when you need all caps (but why would you need that?) is the right time for 90'S - but 90s is fine, and if you need an apostrophe, there is far more of a case for a leading one - I think '90s works fine in a sentence, but looks stupid standing alone, so I'd omit it there.

'90s

Yeah, looks a bit stupid. Also, I don't much care, as I have never quite grasped how to grammatically decode '90s or 90s or '90's or 90's anyway, despite understanding it. Since the case for the later one is so unclear, if there is one at all, I'd go for leaving it out unless it is essential for comprehension, as in the all-caps version.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

I would oppose putting that on the flyer Alang. It looks a bit pious and like we're protesting too much. As I said somewhere else on Friday, there's very little difference between the way an 'ironist' and an 'enthusiast' dance. And there's no difference at all between their two quid.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

There is a difference in the atmosphere generated tho.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

(not really cos the so called ironists love it too (after a few beers anyway))

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

I'd remove both "irony" and "guilt." It's pop music, if people don't like it, plenty of other clubs out there.

My dancing is never ironic.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

I think too much time spent in Oxford in the late nineties may have turned me a little militant wrt ironists and 'cheese'.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I don't think there'd be MUCH of a difference. I mean if you come to Poptimism and you don't like pop music AT ALL then sure you're going to deserve your folded-arms misery, it's not like we don't make it clear what we're about.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

My dancing is often ironic. My enjoyment never is.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

GOD, FIVE YEARS ON ILX HAS CHANGED ME BEYOND ALL RECOGNITION!!!

The Brocade Fire (kate), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

I think you should replace 'Guilt free' with 'Plenty Rude'.

I don't know what it means, but I think it sounds like the sort of slogan that would get me to go to a club.

suckling pig at a rave (alix), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

I think my reaction to a lot of pop music is awe and delight at its audacity or brazenness, this can be mistaken for irony, particularly when said brazenness involves a Scandinavian guy rapping.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

I reckon Alang should put that picture of himself on the flyer. Or maybe on an officially Poptimal website that people cd link to, like.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

Or indeed, a bloke called Sheffield Dave singing a Billy Idol song.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

Er, I meant people cd mistake delight at Sheff. Dave. for irony, not that we should put a picture of Alan on aforementioned Scooterist.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Let me Photoshop the face of The Lex over Alan's first though (xpost).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

I wish there were a regular weekly Poptimism radio show. 'Tis pity that Resonance don't like tunes.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Plus also at a #1s night especially there is a kind of shock-value in some of the picks, an "Oh my god we can't play THAT" which again may not be totally distinguishable from irony. It's not playing stuff you think is bad, though, which would be wretched (though I have done it at paid gigs, with eg The La's "There She Goes", and it has its own whorish pleasure I suppose). It's playing something to find out if it's good or not.

I think too much about this stuff.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Maybe "irony" was the wrong word... It's not that I don't like the music, just that I'd be too, too... embarassed? Moody? Shy? to enjoy it. I blame years of conditioning at university, where you could either dance to 'cool' stuff somewhere tiny with sticky black goo on the floor or go to a Ben Sherman infested hell-hole and dance to pop music in your Rockports while preparing to glass anyone who looked at your bird.

The only exception to this rule was really cool people who liked to show how cool they were by dancing to cheesey pop in an 'ironic' manner (it was the late '90s, after all). And I have never been, and never will be, cool in any way.

I dunno. I can't really put into words what it is I'm trying to say, so I'll just slope off into the corner and mumble to myself for a bit.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Not to put words in anyone's mouth, but I rather suspect that Poptimism is a club for people who have rather given up *caring* about what is cool or isne't.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

do you mean the late "'9'0's" in ironic quotes :-)

no i wouldn't put "irony free" on the flyers - i was being in a mood whereby i was inclined to state the opposite of what i actually meant.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

Look, HS, I'm officially the least cool person on this planet, and if I can come to these nights, enjoy myself and not give a damn about "embarrassment" (unless it's the one by Madness ahem) after a year of stalling and making excuses, then so can you!

(xpost x 2, obv)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:55 (twenty years ago)

i think the only genuine poptimism embarassment comes from over-playing a track.

nice to hear toxic again though :-)

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

Well, only if that track were "Turtle Power" (which thankfully we did NOT hear on Friday)!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

On the next flyer put INDIE DISCO at the top with This Is Not An in tiny letters sideways down the length of the first I.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

What are these I find in my mouth? Words? Gadzooks! Who could have put them there....?

No, no no, I'm giving up. I like the music, I like the venue, but for reasons I don't fully understand I feel like I'd feel like a spare prick should I ever turn up. So for now I'll continue to lurk in the shadows. That was me selling the Big Issue, you see. Mwahaha (and so on).

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

Pete stopping reaching for Toxic when the beer takes hold will be a ravens-leaving-the-tower moment.

I am wary of stressing this uncool thing. I think some of the regulars are pretty cool, though perhaps not when they're actually at Poptimism.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

It must be emphasised that this club is not run by the Cool Police. You will not be looked up and down at the point of entry for evidence of sufficiently hip clothing/haircut, and the atmosphere inside is friendly and welcoming; not like most London clubs where you feel you have to produce a CV and current bank statement in order to be allowed to breathe.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

Errr... when did I say "uncool"? I said "given up caring about cool" which makes someone neither cool nor uncool.

But whatever. It's not like I'm involved with it, or even after last week, likely to go again either.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

You might get laughed at if you order Leffe by the bottle.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

And there's no difference at all between their two quid.

Surely you mean "between they're two two quid's"?

'90s is grammatically correct: as it is a contraction of 1990s, a leading apostrophe is appropriate. I can't work out how a following spostrophe can be justified, Truss or no Truss (even i didn't agree with everything she said).

aaanyway. no irony! yes pop! woot!

POPTIMISM - THE CLUB WHERE IRONY IS A METAL LIKE GOLDY AND SILVERY

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

Come to think of it, Irony Maiden got taken off pretty sharpish didn't they?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

there are more uses for apostrophes than possesives and elision

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

You can hang your coat on them, for one thing.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

Iron Maiden was requested by 2 or 3 people, Tim and I thought, well we'll give it a shot, it cleared the dancefloor so off it went, much to the sorrow of its few fans. It's far from a bad record to play but certainly not a last half hour one. Sorry Maidenites.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

On the next flyer put INDIE DISCO at the top with This Is Not An in tiny letters sideways down the length of the first I.

BEST. IDEA. EVER.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

WORST. IDEA. EVER. for you'll get lots of indie types coming in who'll moan about the lack of Belle and Sebastian. No one ever reads small print on a club flyer.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps I could inform them at the door, if they're looking a little indie - "Excuse me - you do know this isn't an indie disco, don't you?". After they'd paid, obviously.

suckling pig at a rave (alix), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

you should just mime the 'n't' part of the sentence too. if they can't lip-read it's their own fault.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

Doesn't wanting to not be an indie disco inevitably give away the fact that poptimism is an indie disco?

alext (alext), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Poptimism is not an indie disco.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Well if I ever got sick of the intro to Toxic (or someone introduced a boycott) I'd stop playing it.

Even the Face Of Boe loves it.

Poptimism is so indie it denioes its indieness. Clearly.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

"the Face Of Boe"????

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

Tom E, I'm not sure I know what you are saying re. 'There She Goes'. I know that track doesn't need any new defenders to stick up for it, but I am surprised if you think it's bad. I can't see any reason why you would think it's not good.
