A favourite moment: Dan in jail, and Darlene is the one who turns up to bail him out. "I think we both knew it would come to this one day - but who would have guessed it would be this way round?" Her pleasure in every second, Dan's weary "Just get me out of here." Perfect. Also when she got her first period, and Dan has no idea what to say or do, and ends up punching her in the shoulder and saying "Way to go!"

Roseanne: Well I don't want you to give him any grief about this, ya know, cause you could traumatize him and turn him into a serial killer!
Darlene: Well don't worry, how much damage could he do with only one free hand?
― luna (luna.c), Friday, 26 August 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)
Also, in the one "morality" type episode they had, where Darlene is stuck with her slutty neighbor at a concert, and is offered pot by some guy in a leather jacket, I loved the self-awareness of her reply: "oh god, I feel like I'm in a really bad after school special".
The show got really horrible in the end, though. Too bad.

a couple of years ago, there was an article about her struggle with (multiple personality/disscoative(sp)/something else) and i kept thinking that one of the more fascinating things about both the special, that article, and the last season of roseanne (and really the wasteland that was post roseanne) was that she was one of the last few who got very rich very quickly, and didnt know what to do about it.
she doesnt have that meta/postmodern sheen of artifice, that training of how to live and what to do with fame, and its really weird, to watch roseanne, and see it in a meta way, see how its in a coded way, about figuring out how to deal with issues of public/private
the scene at her father's funeral, or some of the interactions with jackie, or how much she hates arnie, in some of those episodes, or jackie going to therapy, and its not the working class versmillitude of the early episodes, but its this bizarre document on fame...
i also found it really interesting that, everyone eventually got paired off, and for the last (3?) seasons they had no idea how to handle, what to do with dj.
(you can see similar issues from the beginning, of grace under fire, with brett butler, and it disintergrates sooner, but there are episodes, maybe a dozen or so, that are the best, most real things ever on television, a hyper, broken remix of roseanne)

There's a mid-point that I like the best, I couldn't say which season it is but it's when Darlene goes from sorta funny to completely awesome. Then Becky 2.0 shows up and it's kind of weird after that.

Darlene is uber-hot, no question. Sarah Chalke never did anything for me. I know she's improved a lot since then, but when she was on Roseanne, she was easily the worst actor on the show. It wasn't just that she wasn't a convincing Becky, she wasn't a convincing human. Completely wooden, and acting that bad cancels out the hotness, for me. Lecy had loads more personality, and I think that made her attractive in a weird way when she came back for most of season 8. She was really gawky before that.

was that when darlene was over jackie's while she was poundin down beers? funny little plot line
― Surmounter, Saturday, 11 August 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)
It was early on, yeah. I seem to remember it was an episode where pre-depression jock Darlene had run away to Jackie's apartment or something and was hanging out there when Jackie got wasted and said that. Last time I saw Laurie Metcalf she was on either Desperate Housewives or Grey's Anatomy, one of those shows. IMDb says she has been on both, so I can't be sure which.
x-post that would be the right episode, then.

i love her but that thing she said about gayz pissed me off, something about how all gay ppl ever talk about is their gay politics, and at the end of it isn't being gay about narcissism anyway?
― Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)
It wasn't properly worded and way too generalized, but I think I got what she was saying and didn't completely disagree ... at least in terms of some gay politicos.
― Eric H., Sunday, 12 August 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)
fine but when you issue a statement to the public, you have a lot of responsibility TO properly word it, and to NOT generalize. shunting that responsibility is tactless and shortsighted.
― Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)
Was it something she "issued to the public" or was it something she said in an interview that perhaps the reporter didn't clarify or took out of context or...?

i mean notwithstanding ppl's FEELINGS it was just a dumb political move, why would you say something like that and jeopordize ur reputation?
― Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)
Roseanne more or less OTM, though -- not about the narcissism but about how 99% of politically active queers are doing queer activism only. Clearly you can find counterexamples, but when I worked for an enviro group there was a shocking lack of gays and lesbians in the movement.
― Casuistry, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)
ya, OK. still, she coulda chosen to sound a bit more intelligent about it.
― Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)
Seriously, Surmounter? Why say something you think is true when it might jeopardize your reputation? Are you sure you want to be advocating that?
― Casuistry, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)
um, well in any circumstances, u have to consider the politics. it's unavaoidable. so to a certain extent, yes i think that if you're about to say something that sounds quite tactless and offensive, it would be pretty dumb of you to not stop and think, "do i want my reputation to be dumb and tactless?"
― Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)
everybody thinks about image/where u stand socially. it's not low it's just necessary.
― Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)
i mean it jus sucks for her, cuz now this woman that i thought was like some versin of God is slightly tainted in my eyes. u don't go around saying being gay is about being obsessed with yourself. please
― Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)
Roseanne built her entire career on being tactless, though. On being provocative and -- not dumb, but certainly not "intellectual". On cutting through certain situations and issues like a loud fart in a boardroom.
― Casuistry, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)
absolutely, but she was also usually sensitive to different types of ppl, at least with regard to her acting.
i think maybe this "fart" would have been different had she chosen her words better. i never thought of her as insensitive to different kinds of ppl. and to imply that a gay man's existence can be chalked up to getting off on himself is cleaerly insensitive.
i love her brand of nonintellectual clarity, but here it seemed like she was just ready to fart just to fart.
thanks i've now typed font at least three times.
― Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)
lol *fart
to imply that a gay man's existence can be chalked up to getting off on himself is cleaerly insensitive.
Except of course that's not what she said at all. She said that some people say this and that in the context of political activism those people might have a point.
― Casuistry, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)
she may not have said that EXACTLY, but i wouldn't agree with "thats not what she said at all."
"some ppl say being gay is about narcissism and sometimes i wonder"
is way too vague/insensitive/silly to be considered a "nonintellectual take on grappling the issues"
she may not have said that gays and lesbians are looking at themselves in the mirror wanking off, but she also left a lot of room for reading into it. which is why she was attacked for it after the fact.
― Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)
"Sometimes I wonder" in this sentence seems pretty clearly to mean "when I think about politically activist gay people, I wonder".
― Casuistry, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)
She was attacked for it after the fact at least in part because it was a good way for gay political groups to get their soundbites into the media.
― Casuistry, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)
i'm not really sure why we're arguing, i don't think we disagree much.
her words were lackluster, her message perhaps valid if explored through better means.
― Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)
at least in part because it was a good way for gay political groups to get their soundbites into the media.

And that might be a good thing! Roseanne got to be provocative to teh gays AND let the gay activist groups harp on their soundbites. Win/win!

been watching season 2 this week (so good) and one of the things that strikes is you is the extent to which it's incumbent on the actors to pull of writing that (sometimes) wouldn't necessarily be that funny on the page. so many of the laffs are from just some moment of quirky, honest timing, instead of some set-em-up knock-em-down joeks that any actor could recite to adequate effect, & the whole thing feels loose and true in a way that no other network sitcom i can think of does.
― Never sauces! (rent), Friday, 9 January 2009 14:45 (seventeen years ago)
the storyline about roseanne having to work all these shitty jobs is pretty real. like she gets fired from clucky's chicken or smthg and then gets a job in a beauty salon sweeping hair. but she likes the people there and when she gets promoted to shampoo girl she mentions it in a slightly embarassed way at dinner. dan responds in a way i can identify with, which is to try to build rosie up but by denigrating the job: "hey, it's work...you shouldn't be embarrassed" etc implying she's better than this temporary station but in the process suggesting the job itself is degrading. and rosie responds with "yeah, yknow it is degrading work, but nobody there makes me feel that it is -- THATS YOUR JOB, RIGHT DAN?" but it's such a subtle little dance of intentions and implications. you can totally sympathize with both sides. i'm not really doing it justice here, of course.

I love LOVE every season of this show between the first and last. The first was basically just a stiff rehash of her standup routines, and the last was just batshit crazy and not really likeable at all. But between them was one of the best-written and delivered sitcoms I've ever watched, and I love that it's syndicated in about 100 different places so I can continually watch eps at almost any hour of the day or night.

it's like there's an unspoken, assumed level of equality b/w the two of them. not to mention the chemistry. there's a scene where they're out to dinner (was it an anniversary?) and they are basically bullshitting for the whole thing! it didn't feel improvised, but it did have a fluidity and effortless quality to it.
it was like this:
so many of the laffs are from just some moment of quirky, honest timing, instead of some set-em-up knock-em-down joeks that any actor could recite to adequate effect, & the whole thing feels loose and true in a way that no other network sitcom i can think of does.

like there's a part in that scene in the restaurant where rose wants to more coffee and rather than wait for server, she just gets up from her seat and gets the coffee pot to serve herself and another guest along the way. it was...unrefined, maybe, but also rly decent.

One of my friends had parents who were the spit of Roseanne and Dan; also they were working class from the Iron Range so going over there was like a set visit.
When I saw this piece linked by Jez yesterday I knew the comments would be #sturmundrang and LOLed at the commenters who were willing to write her off because she threatened a woman exec who offered her fake sisterhood to gain trust and compliance. You know: 'ooh, she called her a bitch!' My working-class sister would call such a woman 'scum-sucking sewer slut' and yo, she'd be right.

The end of my addiction to fame happened at the exact moment Roseanne dropped out of the top ten, in the seventh of our nine seasons. It was mysteriously instantaneous! I clearly remember that blackest of days, when I had my office call the Palm restaurant for reservations on a Saturday night, at the last second as per usual. My assistant, Hilary, who is still working for me, said—while clutching the phone to her chest with a look of horror, a look I can recall now as though it were only yesterday: “The Palm said they are full!” Knowing what that really meant sent me over the edge. It was a gut shot with a sawed-off scattershot, buckshot-loaded pellet gun. I made Hil call the Palm back, disguise her voice, and say she was calling from the offices of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Instantly, Hil was given the big 10-4 by the Palm management team. I became enraged, and though she was uncomfortable doing it (Hil is a professional woman), I forced her to call back at 7:55 and cancel the 8:00 reservation, saying that Roseanne—who had joined Tom and Nicole’s party of seven—had persuaded them to join her at Denny’s on Sunset Boulevard.

Of course Carsey remembers it all a bit differently - there's an interesting (and very long) interview with her and Tom Werner on youtube (the stuff about Rosanne is about half way through this part - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PHQbo739Dk - I think) which is slightly ruined by the fact that you can hardly hear the interviewer but it's still worth a watch if you're interested in the process of making television.

I don't doubt Rosie was a pain in the ass, but you kinda have to be once you realize that everybody in showbiz is out to screw everyone else (to exaggerate only slightly).

There are righteous reasons to be a PIA, and Roseanne had plenty.
It's one of my particular observations: if you are a feminist, you have two fronts for battle - men with a clubhouse mentality, and women who screw over other women to make sure they're the exceptional babe in the clubhouse.

You'd think a Hollywood professional like Marcy Carsey would be a little bit better at toning down the liar's body language (head shaking, looking this way and that, etc.) but nope.

Reading yesterday's news more closely, it is very likely a PR campaign for the Greens til July. So, somewhat disappointing.
Barr filed her paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Jan. 25, creating a four-way race for the Green nomination, which will be decided at the Green Party Presidential Nominating Convention in July.
"I will run until the convention in July in Baltimore-I fully expect Jill Stein 2b the nominee& I will support her, but til then-I'll serve," Barr said amid a slew of other tweets, some of them raunchy, most having to do with her campaign....
In a more recent statement posted at the Green Party Watch website, Barr expressed her support for the Occupy Wall Street movement and said, "Both the Democratic and Republican parties are bought and paid for by corporate America and cater to the needs of the highest bidder as opposed to the people they claim to represent. I cannot be bought."

roseanne is about due for a big avclub reappraisal. it's a show about an actual ugly american family that doesn't look at it through some liberal mike & molly condescension, the jokes are occasionally a lot better than they should be because of norm macdonald and john goodman is consistently way too good for the show the thing you could say keeps it from revisionist god tier status is that it goes for easy emotional notes far too often. I rebut this by saying that, what, like scrubs isn't even worse about this?
a critical reappraisal of roseanne would exist outside of 90s nostalgia - you'd have to frame it as part of america's cultural decline. its ugliness is going to reflect our country more and more and the modern family "look at how nice santa monica and the glendale galleria are" aesthetic will be hysterically dated
When unemployment hits 12%, roseanne will seem like a show with a timelessness and honesty that was almost an anomaly in how far ahead of its time it was when every boutique shop in the country starts to go out of business because they can't afford health insurance for stock boys, that's when roseanne gets reappraised. that or the shocking, premature death of john goodman in 2014
"when every other show on television focused on the already-dying bohemian culture in new york city, chicago or los angeles..."
― Cunga, Thursday, 27 December 2012 08:38 (thirteen years ago)

feel like they were close to making a point when bringing up The Office, a show which for a decade normalized a childish racist sexist narcissist idiot and how lovable he grew to be. he gets a pass because of one line about Barack Obama and another about Oscar forgiving him (for the time he forced a kiss just after outing an employee in front of his entire staff). The Office was a huge mainstream hit in Walmart country and Emmy country. the beloved Scott's number two Dwight even has a running joke about his nazi grandfather. of course the clip they use is from the most saccharine sentimental farewell scene in the series.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 18 January 2018 19:35 (eight years ago)
I wouldn't be inclined to make any sweeping pronouncements about the real-world impact of the reboot. This idea is potentially worthwhile for exploration but maybe on another show, one where it isn't inconsistent with the show's previous incarnation and therefore stupid and seemingly only in place just to make a point and to demonstrate that the irl Roseanne is insane in a way that Roseanne Connor was not.
― the smartest persin in the room (Old Lunch), Thursday, 18 January 2018 19:46 (eight years ago)
Hard to separate this direction with the show’s final season that had the Conners winning the lottery. It was an ambitious turn and an attempt to maybe honestly reflect where irl Roseanne was at but led to a lot of really bad “cultural commentary” in the form of playing things super broad. iirc there’s an episode where Roseanne fights sexist terrorists on a train and Steven Seagal cameos. When the show ended she was asked to rank her 10 favorites episodes and all ten episodes she picked where from that season.

But she acknowledged, “I had some disagreement with her foreign policy.”

TBF, he only 'died' in the weird narrated addendum to the final episode wherein Roseanne retconned the bulk of the series in one fell swoop (Jackie's actually a lesbian, Darlene and Becky were actually each married to the other's partner IRL, etc.). It was dumb as hell.

i haven't watched Roseanne for quite a while, but her character was clearly a liberal, and it seems a little odd that she would become a Trump voter. there's episodes where she confronts the fact that she is bigoted against black people and uncomfortable being kissed by a gay woman - but this is to her own chagrin. she's also very strong-willed and doesn't put up with any sort of sexist crap. i guess roseanne is kind of a former liberal who despises muslims and arabs so maybe the turn isn't so unrealistic?

I watched the first episode & mostly enjoyed it. There were a lot of solid laughs that hit the same funnybone as the old series did, that was important for me, anyway. The politics stuff was clunky but it’s not a huge part of the show, as long as the family relationships take precedence i’m not super heated over it.

― Frederik B, Friday, 30 March 2018 01:22 (eight years ago)
full disclosure: I watched Roseanne religiously growing up, it was one of my favorite sitcoms of all time. I have deep, deep love for it. And I’m not really a fan of her in life at all. It was only through the lens of that show that I loved her. There’s a hardness, a sharp edge that reminds me of my own family, and that gallows humor, that need to laugh when things are at their shittiest still resonates with me. That being said, there are few things that divide ppl as quickly as that show. My dad could never leave the room fast enough. Mr Veg looked at me like I’d just taken a shit on the floor when he saw I’d dvr’d the new series. The Trump stuff is a red herring - the same ppl that hated the show before are going to hate it now, it just gives them something new to yell about. I dont think it will lose a lot of old diehard fans tbh.
― Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2018 01:32 (eight years ago)
Last Man Standing wasn't as right-wing as it's been painted. Yes, Allen's character was a self-deluding manly-man who thought the world was going soft, Hillary was Satan, blah blah blah. But his wife and three daughters (and the one daughter's husband, and his neighbors) all got plenty of time to insult him and knock him around whenever his bullshit got too rancid. The only real difference between it and any other cookie-cutter US sitcom was that Allen wasn't a big fat guy married to an obviously much younger babe.

Watched the premiere this morning. The political stuff was somewhat interesting--I also remember Roseanne Conner as clearly a liberal, but her transformation is credible. Anyway, I was more interested in the comedy and performances. The timing and line readings seemed really clunky to me. Laurie Metcalf was the only one who seemed to comfortably pick up where she left off. A few good lines (the sequence where Darlene's daughter asks for money) lost in all the dead spaces. The two Beckys facing off was clever.

As I make my way through The Americans and Big Little Lies, one thing that jumped out at me watching the new Roseanne was how poor an actor Darlene's son is. I'm not commenting on the sociology of the character, just the performance--he's an overly cute and precocious kid from a 1970s sitcom. One thing that all the "prestige shows" have in common--at least the ones I've watched--are subtle performances from young actors. Often they begin in the background and slowly become major characters. Darlene's son is a major character already; the actor's just not up to it.
― clemenza, Saturday, 31 March 2018 18:53 (eight years ago)
(Some of the blame belongs to the writers. Darlene's son isn't really a character, not yet; he's a topical issue.)
― clemenza, Saturday, 31 March 2018 19:06 (eight years ago)
thats my biggest problem with the reboot overall so far. using pre-developed characters as ciphers for topical humor (which is mostly bad in these first two episodes).
― NBA YoungBoy named Rocky Raccoon (m bison), Saturday, 31 March 2018 19:43 (eight years ago)
Roseanne was topical when it aired, why wouldn’t a reboot be the same?
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 31 March 2018 19:47 (eight years ago)
At the time, the show's topicality felt new and brave. I'd never seen anything like depressive-Darlene on a sitcom--or, more for laughs, DJ's onanistic adventures (not sure if that pre-dated Seinfeld or not). Darlene's son just feels parachuted in to me.
― clemenza, Saturday, 31 March 2018 20:02 (eight years ago)

I'm not a sitcom fan. Besides Good Place, I haven't watched a sitcom since Arrested Development, and before then maybe season 6-7 of Seinfeld 20 years ago.
A roommate made time for that Raymond show, and I found everything about it unfunny, verging on sordid. I concluded that one couldn't appreciate family sitcoms without an experience of a normal family.
Secretly, I hope that a writer has taken note of Rosanne's wingnuttery to write her into a corner. I'll be there for the highlights.
― #DeleteFacebook (Sanpaku), Sunday, 1 April 2018 02:48 (eight years ago)

I remember seeing one episode of Home Improvement where one of the kids announces that he is an atheist and won't be attending church with the family anymore. "Roseanne" is a hit, again. The ratings of the back-to-back episodes that launched its much-belated 10th season debut March 27 were, in today's thin-sliced television landscape, impressive and historical: 18.1 million viewers, rising to 25 million with delayed viewings.Last Tuesday's second-week figures fell off some, as expected, to a still-impressive 15 million. A second season has been ordered....The point of the Conners, like most television families, is not that they stand for a whole class of people but that they are individuals whose company, and whose conflicts, we find stimulating or comforting. We may share some of their circumstances or opinions or behaviors, but like our own families, we are aware that they are unique, identifiably human but indefinable merely by wealth, race, gender or politics. They don't agree on everything, and to make them stand for White Working-Class America, whatever that is, is as quixotic as Barr's belief that Donald Trump is a supporter of LGBTQ rights....It's not necessary to like every joke or expressed attitude to admire the show. (I do.) Like the people it portrays, it's complicated. What makes "Roseanne" work for a wide array of viewers is that these people have sides; you can't boil them down to a stereotype. They don't stand for White Working-Class America, which has become erroneously synonymous with Trump's America, any more than they stand for the Hollywood production process that gives them life. They are working class and white, but are they conservative? Not particularly, as far as those issues are commonly understood. It mocks the blithe entitlement of the rich. It stands up for the oddball. It accepts what used to be called "mixed marriages" – son D.J. (Michael Fishman), back from serving in Syria, has an African American daughter (Jayden Rey) — without comment, because such things have become normal even in places one might not expect. (Anyone who watches a little reality TV knows this to be true.)...There are times when television romanticizes the past and times when it idealizes the future, in either case showing us a kinder, better, more inclusive world than the one we're living in. At other times, it shows us something more akin to the world as it is."Roseanne" hits all those notes. It's both old-fashioned — a family comedy in which lessons are learned and love is shared by an episode's end — and, in its doomed-to-struggle way, aspirational. Its point, both within the show, as a work of art in the world, is that you make allowances for people you love, even as you hold them to account.

No Alfred it’s not. Roseanne and John Goodman have insane chemistry in current interviews but it doesn’t seem to translate to screen in the new series. Roseanne’s line delivery is often stilted and imo hard to believe

― Millennial Whoop, wanna fight about it? (Phil D.), Saturday, 7 April 2018 02:50 (eight years ago)
I mean, I'm not the one who brought up accepting "mixed marriages'" as an indicator of whether one is or isn't "conservative," but clearly the writer meant *something* by it.

― Droni Mitchell (Ross), Wednesday, 11 April 2018 06:16 (eight years ago)
There's a scene in the most recent episode where Darlene and David, having reunited after a long separation, stare at each other for a while before echoing the same sentiment to each other: "You look like my kids." It's a beautiful moment, because it feels so accurate; I imagine that this is exactly how people who share children might come to see each other over time. Sara Gilbert and Johnny Galecki play the scene like they've been living the lives of their old characters for the decades since they've played them (which, obviously, they have not). David claims that part of the reason he ran off years earlier is because he didn't know how to deal with his brother's death, and in the previous episode Darlene observes how Becky, now a fortysomething alcoholic, has been emotionally frozen at the age at which she lost her husband (not stated, but perhaps the 33 that she is pretending to be in order to get paid to be a surrogate?). Earlier, when under the parents' roof again, they're sniping away at each other like they're still teenagers, but here they bond over the disappointments of adulthood. If the show were smart, it would realize that the Becky/Darlene relationship holds the same vital position in this revival that the Roseanne/Jackie relationship did in the original series and run with it.
But, ugh, too much of the rest of the show just feels off, starting with Roseanne's once razor-sharp timing. John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf, arguably the two finest actors on television during the time of the original series run, are short-changed by the writing; Jackie, in particular, is written like a cartoon now, so Metcalf has little choice but to play her as one. Bev always walked the line between funny-annoying and actually-annoying, but the best they can give her this time around is some jokes about geriatric sex. A scene in which Roseanne comically abuses her granddaughter (met with laughter and applause by the studio audience) is shockingly ignorant, given that the original series included an episode in which Roseanne has to confront the legacy of abuse that she may have inherited from her father. I did like the episode about Darlene's genderqueer son (clemenza probably otm upthread about the cloyingness of his acting, but I'm finding many of the performances here, including those from more seasoned actors, so hit and miss that I barely notice), mostly because it feels groundbreaking: I don't think this has been done on a popular sitcom yet.
― Dangleballs and the Ballerina (cryptosicko), Friday, 20 April 2018 17:25 (eight years ago)
I still haven't watched this but read that Roseanne calls her granddaughter a bitch in an episode and puts her head under the faucet?
― Yerac, Friday, 20 April 2018 18:08 (eight years ago)

Actually a pretty accurate portrait of old people getting crankier and more set in their wrong ways with age.
― Uppercase (Eric H.), Friday, 20 April 2018 18:24 (eight years ago)
Metcalf was forced to be very broad in the post lottery winning episodes too. The prerelease still from this that showed her in women’s march wear gave me such a bad omen. The David and Darlene Becky stuff described above is the first thing I read that made me curious to check this out.
― Nerdstrom Poindexter, Friday, 20 April 2018 18:45 (eight years ago)
Jackie isn't wearing the women's march wear because it's what she wears every day; it's just a one-off, deliberate choice to piss off Roseanne.
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 20 April 2018 19:14 (eight years ago)

Goodman was really the rock of that show. the writing, too - dealt with a lot of topics that sitcoms avoided, such as mental illness, had the balls to show a relatively realistic family argument that resulted in more than hurt feelings.
afraid to sully my memories of this show with the new eps.

I don't agree with this. Roseanne isn't much of an actor but her comic timing and ability to deliver a one-liner in the original show, coming from her stand-up background, is great imo

Tonight’s episode, with Roseanne learning some valuable lessons re: her new Muslim neighbors, is the kind of thing that the series might have handled with grace and subtlety back in the old days but here comes off as so forced that I actually felt embarrassed watching it. The show's triumph allowed star Roseanne Barr to return to the spotlight as a lightning rod of controversy. A flood of think pieces examined her support of President Trump and the show's point of view in the divisive cultural climate.Seated at her publicist's offices, Gilbert carefully considers some of the blowback the show has received largely fueled by Barr's Twitter feed and outspokenness."It's such a political climate now that I always am nervous that people will hear one thing, see one thing and pre-judge the show, or decide not to watch the show," she said. I realize this is an unpopular thing to say right now, but Roseanne is legitimately, clinically mentally ill, and not responsible for what she says in the way someone who is not would be. Amid all of this she was also campaigning on Twitter for the release of a two-bit British neo-Nazi who was arrested on contempt of court charges. I was surprised enough that she'd heard of him at all, which suggests either a deep immersion in this sort of shit or a direct line to the sort of people who would push that stuff her way.

My friend who is an immigrant was texting me about the canning and I was surprised he was a fan. He said she had rational conservative views like how the show portrayed her distrust of the new muslim neighbors but then in the end she stood up for them in her town. roseanne in the show is basically liberal - though probably doesn't vote/hates politicians.
she has a close friend and colleague who is gay, is disgusted when she learns that DJ doesn't want to kiss a girl in a school play because she's black (although she realizes that she has her own prejudices about race and sexuality but, you know, feels bad about them, examines them etc.), was a former hippy who attended anti-war marches in the 70s, in one episode darlene threatens to rebel by dating a young republican etc. the character of roseanne was less of a POS than the actual roseanne imo

the thing that really bothers me is, look, "insanely racist" is a figure of speech. racism is not actually a mental illness. it's perfectly possible to be howling mad for an extended period of time without spouting racist bullshit.

If anything, Roseanne Connor was not bigoted enough. The contrast with how Norman Lear and Carroll O'Connor developed Archie Bunker is stark. Roseanne ultimately was a Trump supporter who wanted the audience to be sympathetic with Trump supporters. Lear and O'Connor are/were progressives who wanted to portray a bigot honestly

I'll never understand why there's been such a concerted effort (begun during the last few seasons of the original run) to compromise the legacy of what could have been inarguably one of the greatest shows ever (I will still argue that, even after this revival inevitably degrades into, say, a show about DJ and the flatulent alien he adopts).

It's around on torrent sites so I thought I'd give it a look.Hadn't been fully aware it was an actuality until it turned up.Seemed like the kind of half baked idea that was circulating as a joke not something somebody actually went ahead and made. Not been following the story, did they stop transmission when she made the comments and then have to run off and make a series rapidly. Not sure how speed of production compares to what they had to bin.
Also not sure how far ahead of things tehy were making episodes. If they had a full series shot or if it was going to be done episode by episode as they progressed. There's nothing immediately topical about the show taht would mean they would automatically need to have it reacting to current world events beyond the Medicare set up or anything is there?
― Stevolende, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 13:51 (seven years ago)
don't they shoot on a soundstage? It doesn't take that long, especially if they just had to revise some scripts.
― President Keyes, Wednesday, 17 October 2018 14:03 (seven years ago)
The sheer bad taste of just shamelessly brazening through is classic especially if they attempt to “show due respect to the character” or whatever. The thick of it could write out their disgraced star in a halfway elegant way due to the nature of the series & the sopranos rolled with the pretty tough punch of marchand’s death well enough but however skilfully they do it this is fundamentally different, it reminds me of that dumb sitcom “8 simple rules for dating my teenage daughters” which ran for a season and then John Ritter died (ie the guy from the title, with the daughters and the rules for dating them) and although it was the defining relationship of literally every character the producers were like “eh fuck him” and kept it going for two more seasons of wacky hijinks. It’s bizarre and uncanny but the Garfield without Garfield potential is greater here I think because Roseanne is bigger (in the show and irl) than whatever the fuck John Ritter’s character is called, and also because Barr is not dead, she just got fired for being the unstable racist we and her bosses and colleagues already knew she was, but because they (and we the audience) are soulless ghouls they’re gonna go ahead and pretend she died. so the sequel to one of the funniest 90s situation comedies is premised on a family coming to terms with the accidental overdose of the mom everybody knows was in fact murdered by all involved so the show could go on. With laffs! I remember a year or so ago in the “your terrible ideas” thread someone posted “a reboot of frasier in the style of twin peaks the return” and I said that the upcoming Roseanne reboot might (accidentally or otherwise) end up being a bit like that - nb that I haven’t watched it and prob won’t watch the sequel/spinoff either but the *idea* of it is cracking me up, less tptr than lynch’s rabbits but with the living room strewn with dismembered elephant

While we wish the very best for the cast and production crew of 'The Conners' … we regret that ABC chose to cancel 'Roseanne' by killing off the Roseanne Conner character," the statement says. "That it was done through an opioid overdose lent an unnecessary grim and morbid dimension to an otherwise happy family show. … This was a choice the network did not have to make."

Outside of Roseanne being an asshole, which is non-negotiable, I just can't accept the idea of someone having their own series - like, literally their life's work - taken away from them, especially given how hard she seems to have fought for creative control during its 90s run. I mean, The Conners might be fine, but there's something too creepy and Before Watchmen about the concept.

roseanne didn't create the show roseanne, she was cast in a sitcom developed by carsey-werner which was then written to conform with the comic persona she had created. she later became an executive producer on the show and had creative input, but was never the main creative driving force of the show

* for the crime of having not been too lazy to write a series bible, write and produce a pilot script, and to learn writers' names, all of which she refused to do and was then surprised that someone else received a credit per WGA rules

well yeah, but the show is also called "Roseanne". at least in 2 1/2 Men they replaced one of the men. "The Connors" feels like its only place in history is some "17 Quickly-Cancelled Sitcom Spinoffs You Probably Forgot About!" listicle on Buzzfeed

should have just replaced roseanne with kirstie alley
― mookieproof, Thursday, 18 October 2018 21:14 (seven years ago)
interesting detail from a 1989 article on Matt Williams's ousting from the show
Looking back, one writer said that "the feeling among the writers and producers was that we (still) had a show with John Goodman (who plays Barr's husband). But ultimately ABC owned the show and had the final say. And to them it was keep the star at all costs."
― Number None, Thursday, 18 October 2018 21:16 (seven years ago)
Remember when they fired Valerie Harper from Valerie? That had me reeling at the time, but honestly I think it was a better show with Sandy Duncan.

Is there an online resource anywhere with ownership stakes in tv shows detailed? I know sometimes a production company owns the show rather than the network, and it seems like I've heard of rare cases where the star owned their own show.
― WmC, Thursday, 18 October 2018 21:33 (seven years ago)
Desilu owned I Love Lucy while it was airing (sold everything to CBS in 1960 though)

sandy duncan was so cute. I liked the show with valerie harper too. but I liked it with her.

Sara Gilbert, the producer of last year's Roseanne revival, saved the (let's say generally) eight-month contract jobs of hundreds of people who would have otherwise been out of work for a year. Whether The Connors is good, sucks, is better than Roseanne or doesn't get another year, that's the very excellent reason that it exists.
― My Gig: The Thin Beast (sic), Thursday, 18 October 2018 22:16 (seven years ago)
this is sublime
― j., Friday, 19 October 2018 01:50 (seven years ago)
they should have said Roseanne was off "investigating pizzagate" and over the course of the season you come to realize it's a euphemism for "chocked to death on a piece of sausage"

True, but they could have, instead, wrote a brand new sitcom with the same actors playing similar parts, but with all-new character names and a different location. Kinda like "Dusty's Trail" out of "Gilligan's Island"
― Mark G, Friday, 19 October 2018 14:26 (seven years ago)
That is a much worse idea than the The Connors tbh.
― circa1916, Friday, 19 October 2018 14:29 (seven years ago)
also, the "saving the jobs" part involves making a show that ABC are willing to pay for, not spending six months writing something on spec that they absolutely wouldn't get paid for at the end, while the hundreds of crew and production staff still remain out of work
― My Gig: The Thin Beast (sic), Friday, 19 October 2018 15:08 (seven years ago)
I guess. There is that.
I never saw "Gilligans Island", don't know if we got it here, but I do remember "Dusty's Trail", could sing the theme if you like...
― Mark G, Friday, 19 October 2018 15:09 (seven years ago)
yeah they don't have the time or inclination to start from scratch. there might not have been scripts written but they were probably close to pre-production & planning when Roseanne was fired.
― flappy bird, Monday, 22 October 2018 18:41 (seven years ago)
never ever heard of Dusty's Trail until now
― akm, Monday, 22 October 2018 19:00 (seven years ago)
were there multiple Gilligan's Island spinoffs? I don't remember that title but I remember watching a spinoff (and enjoying it - Gilligan's Island rules)
― flappy bird, Monday, 22 October 2018 19:01 (seven years ago)
the gilligan's island episode of roseanne is really bad
― ( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Monday, 22 October 2018 19:04 (seven years ago)
dusty's train does not appear to be a spinoff btw. and doesn't have other actors outside of bob denver
The Connors is more like AfterMASH.

If she hadn't been kicked off her namesake show, there would be so much potential for her screen character to become a Q wife and battle her TV family.

I stopped for a few minutes on one of the terrible relaunch episodes (after Roseanne's departure). They were all in the kitchen talking about Wellman Plastics reopening, and Jackie remembered her old boss Booker, and how much he looked like George Clooney. They even managed to make that not funny. Then they had a brief clip of her and Clooney from the old show. Which got me thinking about the divergent career paths taken by Laurie Metcalf and George Clooney. Metcalf has always done good work, and she got a lot of attention for Lady Bird. He's George Clooney--fame, fortune, awards, some political influence even, everything.
In the end it doesn't matter. Clooney's a good actor, and I've liked him in many films. But I'm pretty sure he's never done anything as sublime as Metcalf's work on the first few seasons of Roseanne.
― clemenza, Saturday, 7 December 2024 02:52 (one year ago)
I don’t mind the revival series, but one of the definitely not-good things about it is how Metcalf’s performance follows her Don Knotts-style mugging of the later seasons of Roseanne instead of her (as you say) excellent work in the earlier seasons.
― cryptosicko, Saturday, 7 December 2024 03:09 (one year ago)
I bailed after the Roseanne controversy and never went back. Not even sure if it's still up and running or just in syndication.
― clemenza, Saturday, 7 December 2024 03:13 (one year ago)
It just finished its 6th season (though I still have only seen up to the 4th) and the seventh has been announced as the last.
― cryptosicko, Saturday, 7 December 2024 03:15 (one year ago)
i never noticed before how in the dancing scene in "Uncle Buck" -- which is already fantastic if only for the Beau Brummels track on the turntable -- Laurie Metcalf is in fact dressed like the historical Beau Brummel. she's great in the film of course
― budo jeru, Saturday, 7 December 2024 03:16 (one year ago)
I was trying to find a good clip--been so long, I don't remember many specifics. There was the episode where Dan beat up the guy who abused her, and the way she thanked him when she found out, but couldn't find that. She's great in this one.

― clemenza, Saturday, 7 December 2024 03:29 (one year ago)
I suppose the politics of that is dated, I don't know--Metcalf is so great, it makes the point moot for me.
― clemenza, Saturday, 7 December 2024 03:30 (one year ago)
Good scene, and well played by Metcalf—I love her barely contained shock when she finally does the math—but it reminds me: one of the weirdest things about revival is that it totally wipes Fred and the baby out of existence. I can see ditching some of the really dumb stuff from late in the run, but that was a pretty significant plot from roughly the series’ midpoint.
― cryptosicko, Saturday, 7 December 2024 13:39 (one year ago)
Fred was really good...That makes no sense at all! They never even allude to him or the baby? Of course, they had the two Beckys and made it work with a meta-joke.
― clemenza, Saturday, 7 December 2024 14:31 (one year ago)
crypto otm. I love Metcalf as an actress but they turned her character into a complete OTT cartoon character in the last few seasons of The Conners.
― her pal Santa falls to the floor (Neanderthal), Saturday, 7 December 2024 14:47 (one year ago)
Why did Fred leave? He was a great character!
― Judge Judy, executioner (stevie), Saturday, 7 December 2024 18:36 (one year ago)
They divorced. So even if it was a matter of Michael O'Keefe not being available for the revival, didn't matter--his character was already long gone.
― cryptosicko, Saturday, 7 December 2024 19:41 (one year ago)
IIRC, part of why O'Keefe left was that ABC offered him his own sitcom, a show--Life's Work, with Lisa Ann Walter & a young Alexa Vega--which ultimately was cancelled after a half season.
