ILX TOP 50 FILMS OF 2000-2004 NOMINATIONS THREAD

I'm going to be slower than Charles, so perhaps this should get started a little in advance while he gives us the other results.

As this will be the Top 50 of a half-decade, you only get half as many votes, with the first couple weighted heavier.

Scoring will be as follows:
1 - 35
2 - 30
3 - 25
4 - 22
5 - 19
6 - 16
7 - 13
8 - 10
9 - 8
10 - 6
11 - 5
12 - 4
13 - 3
14 - 2
15 - 1

This will be a closed ballot - each ILXor can nominate up to five films, no changes once they've been posted. If there aren't enough nominees after a couple of weeks I'll open it up further.

IMDB is the final judge of when something came out. Whenever voting starts, I'll put up the gmail address for ballots.

Nominations close Wed. the 21st.

i don't mean to distract from the point here, but... gear, could you briefly explain what you liked about the million dollar hotel? i love wim wenders, but i just didn't get/like this movie at all, and have never met anyone that did.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

i liked the mise-en-scene of downtown L.A. and I thought it was beautifully directed (plus featured rather good music), and it gets points for being really fucking bizarre.

it wouldn't place in the top ten for me, but i like it and of course no one else will nominate it!

invalid answer

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

It was way too sticky in the last 10 minutes, but it lampooned early '70s hippie-commune silliness without being contemptuous. (I wish the dialogue had left the kid's name "Tet" unexplained tho.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

We're talking about the Chinese movie about the little boy that plays violin right? I thought it was an engrossing, well-paced, nicely-filmed, moving story about childhood ambition and parental expectations.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

no, we're talking about the Scandinavian hippie commune movie

I agree that whatever it had fell apart in the end, but your lampooning-without-contempt is my name-calling-without-conviction

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

i'll admit it was diverting

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

I didn't mean to nominate that one.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 8 December 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Hey Adam, I though no one else had even seen Year of the Devil or The Nine Lives of Thomas Katz. Great nominations!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 9 December 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

I have to say, though, that I thought Nine Queens (if it's the Argentinian movie you meant) owned a bit too much to House of Games.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 9 December 2005 07:00 (twenty years ago)

zappi (joni), Friday, 9 December 2005 07:20 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking we could pick our Worst solely from ppl's Best noms (it happens anyway).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 9 December 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Hey Adam, I though no one else had even seen Year of the Devil or The Nine Lives of Thomas Katz. Great nominations!

Thank you! I think you and I discussed Zelenka before, did we not? I'm always partial to errrr, you know, that kind of thing.

I should just submit my ballot now. 10 movies I haven't seen - Los Angeles Plays Itself, My Architect, Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner, Russian Ark, 25th Hour, Waking Life, The Fog Of War, The Pianist, Yi Yi, Spellbound

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 9 December 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Don't see Waking Life.

Mayor of Dutchtown (nordicskilla), Friday, 9 December 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Do! Ethan Hawke isn't in it long enough to make you grind your teeth!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 9 December 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

But surely Rick L is writing/directing it long enough to make up for that?

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 9 December 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

No, I like Linklater as long as Ethan Hawke ain't 'collaborating.' (We can excise the Speed Levitch scene in WL too, or at least mute it.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 9 December 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

How about the other Richard L and the film you saw last night?

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 9 December 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

You were right, generally crap! cept the print was nice, also Michael Hordern. It seems Ally saves her love for movies she thinks COULD HAVE been good! Again I shouldalisn'd to Dave Kehr...

Hatch and I have similar filmgoing priorities.

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 9 December 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

I like Linklater's sensitivity to Ethan Hawke's 'charm'

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 9 December 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

you're not necessarily supposed to find him completely likable, if at all likable (see Tape)

---------------------

an extra three in case the above aren't eligble fwr.

Igby Goes Down (2002)
The Rules Of Attraction (2002)

MitchellStirling (MitchellStirling), Saturday, 10 December 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

So Eric H., I didn't nominate I Am Sam. You're wondering why I liked it at all? Sean Penn made that character real for me. Maybe the Beatles covers were too much. Maybe the moral issues were too cleaned up. But I think the issues are real. I wish the movie hadn't left his sex drive offscreen, but the fact that it dealt with it at all is pretty rare. I guess I give it slack because films about retarded people are still where films about other minorities were in the '60s.

Pete Scholtes, Saturday, 10 December 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

All movies on the ballot thus far. Not corrected for doubles or typos or ones that might be too new (I saw one or two) or anything, but maybe making it easier for new noms.

>IMDB is the final judge of when something came out.<

Which means my four most obvious adds would be:

2046
Far from Heaven
Cowards Bend the Knee
The White Diamond

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 10 December 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

IMDB bases it on the earliest national release, I believe - so if an American film came out in 1999 but elsewhere in 2000 it wouldn't be eligible, but if an Asian film came out in Hong Kong in 2003 but not in the US until 2005 it would be eligible.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Saturday, 10 December 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

I assume wehn we say IMDB is the "final judge" we're referring to the date next to the movie on its main page. but that date is the earliest release of the movie, in any country, and apparently without regard to whether it was a regular run. so if something showed at CAnnes in 99, but did not open in the US or UK until 2000, the date on the main page at IMDB will be 1999. but if you take the trouble to look at the release dates on IMDB, you'll see that it's not a "1999 movie" as far as we were concerned at hte time.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 10 December 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the number after the name is the final arbiter. I didn't know they based any of them on festival showings, I never looked that closely.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Saturday, 10 December 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

That is true, gabb. I think I pointed it out when we voted on The Virgin Suicides in the '90s poll -- it played 3 festivals in '99 and wasn't released anywhere til April 2000 -- but that's how we've played it all along.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 10 December 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

maybe it's unique to the movie (and expressive of Jarmusch's intentions), but Ghost Dog apparently played during 99 and 2000 in (non-festival showings?) in France, Switzerland, Belgium, Hungary, Japan, Taiwan, Norway, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Poland, Denmark and Sweden before beginning a regular run in the US

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 10 December 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

White Diamond is already up there without the "The," FYI...

Pete Scholtes, Saturday, 10 December 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

I'll nominate Les Invasions Barbares.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Saturday, 10 December 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

from the last big list:
Together (Moodysson, 2001)

there were actually two different movies called "Together" nominated

älänbänänä (alanbanana), Saturday, 10 December 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

and Tillsammans is the moodysson one

älänbänänä (alanbanana), Saturday, 10 December 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

What about Downfall is a 2005 release in most places bar Germany. (I'm sure there are others.)

MitchellStirling (MitchellStirling), Saturday, 10 December 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

It had a theatrical release in 5 countries in 2004.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 11 December 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

there were actually two different movies called "Together" nominated

What's the other "Together", then? Because I can't find any such film on IMDb.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 11 December 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

Someone needs to nominate "Ong-Bak".

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 12 December 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

The '60s poll has finished sooner than possible, so nominations will close early (I think we're almost tapped out anyway). The ballot will be posted Friday afternoon-ish.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

well hopefully nominations aren't closed yet...

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

ah, WTF, 'Snatch'

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

I won't nominate Eureka (Shinji Aoyama) as it's not on US DVD and 'nobody' saw it...

No, please do! I saw it at a film festival and liked it a lot!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm out of noms, Tuomas!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Shit, someone else nominate it then, please...

Also, surely I'm not the only one who loved A Very Long Engagement? Or maybe everyone was expecting Amelie 2 and was disappointed because of that?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

No one at ILX saw it because they were expecting Amelie 2.

TRUE.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Eureka is a good call, so I will nominate it (I'd only nominated four before). Thank you for reminding me of it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

Yay Martin!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

I'm a bit confused - the voting thread is up but at the top it says nominations are still open till the 21st.

Can I add:

The Others (Alejandro Amenábar, 2001)
The Good Girl (Miguel Arteta, 2002)

?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 15 December 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and Être et Avoir (Nicolas Philibert, 2002), please.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 15 December 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

(oops - sorry, Etre et Avoir is there under English translation)

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 15 December 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

A very Long engagement WAS Amélie 2 and that's why I didn't like it.

If nominations aren't closed, I'd like to add:

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (Kim ki-Duk, 2003)

Jibé (Jibé), Thursday, 15 December 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Noms are closed.

OH NOES

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 15 December 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Oh n oes twice. What will I ever do if I can't vote for my only nomination!

Jibé (Jibé), Thursday, 15 December 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Thought nominations closed Dec. 21.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 15 December 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

I missed the change too:

The '60s poll has finished sooner than possible, so nominations will close early (I think we're almost tapped out anyway). The ballot will be posted Friday afternoon-ish.

-- Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (wooderso...), Tuesday 10:02 PM. (later)

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 15 December 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

Still hoping somebody would nominate:

Erin Brockovich
Training Day
Aileen
In the Bedroom
American Pie 2

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 15 December 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

I added your nomination, Jibé. I should have planned ahead better on the dates, but I thought the '60s reveal would take longer. Charles was on the ball.
