Is racism a particularly large problem in Australia?

This isn't a flippant question. The media seems to report about racism in Australia quite a bit. Australians, do you think your country gets a bad rap?

Super Cub (Debito), Monday, 12 December 2005 00:09 (eighteen years ago) link

its pretty fucking insidious. its everywhere. i even find people who seem smart, nice - and when you get to know them it starts slipping out.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 12 December 2005 00:15 (eighteen years ago) link

This seems a real Sydney thing though. This shit just doesn't happen anywhere else, only Sydney. I don't know why.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 12 December 2005 00:20 (eighteen years ago) link

hasn't australia been accepting quite a lot of immigrants (at least by european/american standards) for a while now? the occasional waylaying of refugee ships aside, i mean.

i'm completely talking out of my ass, but i'd be surprised if racism was really any more prevalent in australia than in, say, france or the u.s.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 12 December 2005 00:21 (eighteen years ago) link

I think it is the influx of immigrants that at least partially explains the prevalence of racism.

Super Cub (Debito), Monday, 12 December 2005 00:29 (eighteen years ago) link

My impression was that it isn't Sydney that has segregated bars.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 12 December 2005 00:40 (eighteen years ago) link

But the settler/native thing is possibly a completely different axis to the immigrant fears. When I was there, a lot of talk was being made of restricting immigration from Asian nations. Is that different matter enitrely from Islamic/Mediterranean immigration?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 12 December 2005 00:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I find the concept of "racism" in australia really difficult in comparison to some places like say the US maybe. Here, you'll have greek/italian 2nd generation young guys being the offenders a lot of the time - starting shit, abusing asians, etc. It seems to flux. Once of a time the "wogs" (europeans) were the ones dumped on, then the vietnamese in the 70s, now middle eastern people are copping it. But worryingly, large middle eastern "gangs" (I'm reluctant to use the term definitively) are retaliating at present. I'd be furious if I was muslim right now.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 12 December 2005 00:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Err by which I mean, I'd be furious at these gangs of muslim guys making the muslim community look so bad by smashing up cars and beating people up in revenge.

The whole thing's suddenly exploded into a mess.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 12 December 2005 00:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Incidentally: My impression was that it isn't Sydney that has segregated bars.

.. what was meant by this?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 12 December 2005 01:01 (eighteen years ago) link

I was talking about bars in Western Australia with a 'whites in this room, blacks in this room' policy. Not really relevant to the current situation, as I was saying.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 12 December 2005 01:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually, this pattern exists in the U.S. as well. People lower in the pecking order often look for an even more vulnerable population to push down. "I may be ______, but at least I'm not ______."

Super Cub (Debito), Monday, 12 December 2005 01:33 (eighteen years ago) link

I think this is a Western culture thing, not exclusively a U.S., Australian, nor European one... it varies from country to country, city to city, neighborhood to neighborhood, etc.

Humanity, in many ways, sucks, essentially.

dali madison's nut (donut), Monday, 12 December 2005 01:38 (eighteen years ago) link

I guess maybe suspicion of the "other" is kind of universal, but each society and culture has dinstinct race issues. The histories of the U.S. and France, for example, create very different societal dynamics in each of those countries.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 12 December 2005 03:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Country towns be sadly racist too. Remember when the olympics were on here? How they "tidied up" Refern by moving all the welfare housing aboriginal families/kids out to housing in country towns and outer 'burbs?

Bunch of them ended up in my parents home town. Some time shortly after my parents house was robbed (a petty minor "steal cash and thats it" breakin) for the first time ever (20+ years). Can you guess who they blamed? I was furious at them.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 12 December 2005 03:08 (eighteen years ago) link

I wonder how much small town racism in Australia maps over to the UK. My dad wanted to vote BNP at the last general election but was thwarted by them not actually standing a candidate in his constituency! Hehe. I have tried to talk him out of, before you ask. It's a strange kind of racism though, he has black and asian friends, yet he still wants to kick them out of the country. I prefer to think of it as extreme stupidity.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 12 December 2005 03:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah seriously I don't understand that kind of logic at all. Again, its like seeing a 2nd gen croatian bellowing "go home cunt!" to a koori! And yes, I have seen such an example of staggering stoopidity.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 12 December 2005 03:14 (eighteen years ago) link

I suppose it's a very different world for someone living in a small town compared to a city, it really is like encountering an alien for some of my family to meet someone who isn't white. I have some fantastically racist relatives.

this is a creeping problem that has been pushed on by the FUCKHEADS who run this country letting bigots air their "controversial" views in the name of "freedom of expression" and "countering political correctness", and lending their tacit approval to it all by playing the race/terrorist/immigrant card themselves. the opposition are just as bad because they don't oppose any of it - they're worried that they'll be seen as pandering to minorities. the last ten years have been leading to this. ugh.

As someone from sydney i definitely agree its rampant but in a weird way. ill get back to that in a sec. i never noticed too much racism in perth and i can imagine melbourne having a much more liberal attitude than sydneysiders but you cant tell me queensland and the northern territory arent just as bad as, if not worse than, sydney.

so back to sydney. everyone i know in sydney is rascist to some degree. like there will be a whole lot of comments on how asians cant drive or lebanese guys are greasy or the greeks will rip you off if the south african jews dont get to you first. and theres not even a pause afterward like might happen if something slipped out and you were afraid you'd offended people.

i spent a good chunk of my late teens/early twenties calling people on this sort of talk but I ended up being the person everyone looked down upon. like i was throwing an unnecessary spanner in the works. but heres something i noticed after a while. this man i know, judging solely on what comes out of his mouth, is probably the worst rascist i have ever met but when he comes to meet someone asian, lebanese, whatever he treats them exactly the same as he would any white australian. theres nothing put-on about it. hes absolutely genuine. after i first noticed that, i noticed the same from other people.

im not saying that perpertuating a whole lot of stereotypes isnt bad enough, but the majority of australians i know act a whole lot different than they talk when it comes to race.

Thank god racism has been eliminated in Asia and Africa. No danger of being beaten to death with sticks along with 500,000 of your tribesmen in Central Africa because you're from the wrong group.

No looing down on of Tamils or Vietnamese by differently complected bretheren to the north.

I don't think any did say Queenslanders weren't worse. I'm not sure whether I've just become more aware of it as I've gotten older or if there really is a problem up here, but I've met more people who make casual racist comments (as opposed to your up front skinhead racist) up here than anywhere else.

Thats a point I am very glad you brought up. I guess people would call that "casual racism" but yeah, my dad is like that. He is seriously a good hearted, nice, polite person with no actual prejudices about anyone when it comes down to it. Does this stop him from saying "lots of hymies out today" in my neighbourhood or calling the chinese shopkeepers next door "dim" and "sim"? No, it doesnt. I call him on it EVERY time he says it, and I am very angry about it - but he is HONESTLY BAFFLED and means no harm by it.

That casual, "its just words" kind of racism is very aussie. I think maybe somehow it is encouraged by our "humour through insults" way of life perhaps. I had a brit ex who was horrified at how we all spoke to each other here, calling each other 'fattey' and "shithead" and etc.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 12 December 2005 05:35 (eighteen years ago) link

There's been much discussion along these lines before in these pages. i've always argued for a very strict definition of "racism" where action has to accompany attitude. For example, if as Trayce points out, her dad deals fairly with people, his remarking, "lots of hymies out today" is racist how? "Well we don't say that word so we're not racist." People tend to be overly sensitive and self-righteous about language. Quick to point out other people's shortcomings. WOuld he deny employment, housing, social benefits to Jews? If so, that would surely be racist. Does he use an "offensive" word to describe them? Sometimes. Is that racist? Maybe, maybe not.

starke, Monday, 12 December 2005 05:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Mmm.

All that said, these semantics are nothing in the face of the accounts I'vebeen reading abt the Cronulla beach riots.

Apparenltly THOUSANDS of white locals converged on the beach with every intent of harrasing/screaming/hitting the Lebanese locals off the beach. And then they did. They smashed bottles, kicked people, chased kids in huge mobs, and trashed the mall. I*YD&DSTF^SDF

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 12 December 2005 05:55 (eighteen years ago) link

That's obv. different.

starke, Monday, 12 December 2005 05:59 (eighteen years ago) link

nb: Lebanese in Cronulla not locals (neither were majority of white crowd of course, but the point there was that violence from both sides has been directed against The Other, not infighting amongst bitter racist neighbours).

the Liberal MP for the area went on ABC radio to explain that it was actually revenge from white people for September 11 though. So that's alright then, sorted.

Y'know, Australia was founded on the principles of racism. Why did they create the Commonwealth? To keep the ASIAN YELLOW PERIL out of course. To create the White Australia Policy. And to make sure the Aboriginals remain second-class citizens.

Thankfully, we live in slightly more enlightened times...but the whole bogan underclass still remains and came out in force on Sydney on Sunday. The same bogan underclass that hates "un-ostralian shit, mate" and intelligence. The same bogan underclass that actually give Pauline Hanson her fifteen minutes of ill-gotten fame before John Howard took her policies wholesale. The same bogan underclass who gives us this ultra-neo-conservative federal government that ironically will make their pathetic lives even more worthless. And they'll vote 'em in again and again.

GET EQUIPPED WITH SOME RESPONSIBILITY (ex machina), Monday, 12 December 2005 21:20 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought that this discussion (excerpted from the Sydney Morning Herald) was interesting for the way it foregrounds tribalism and masulinity as key causes, over racism per se:

Clifton Evers, a lecturer in gender studies at the University of Sydney, said the dominant male ego was a highly regarded part of surf culture and the Cronulla riot was an attempt to maintain ownership of the beach.

He dismissed the attack on the North Cronulla lifesavers as the trigger for Sunday's melee, saying the surf culture and the lifesaving movement were often at loggerheads over the use of waves and there was little love lost between both groups.

"The SLSC movement and surfing is a male world grown out of control. Listening to the guys' chants on Sunday, it's clear the protest was an inversion of victimhood," Dr Evers said.

"They kept saying: 'Our world is under attack, our woman need defending, our way of life was under attack.' Of course, nothing of the sort was going on. The whole thing is an attempt to shore up the privileges they enjoy as gatekeepers of the beach culture."

Dr Evers thought that what perhaps the riot displayed most was the power of mateship.

"Most of those guys wouldn't have had a clue. They could be wound up by all the fascist groups in the world and wouldn't know. But they could have been there because one of their mates reckons the outsiders [needed] to be taught a lesson," he said. "And, you know, all those young blokes driving to the beach suburbs in their cars from the western suburbs to fight are being driven by the same thing - mateship.

"You hate who your mates hate. In Australia, mateship is stronger than racism."

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 12 December 2005 22:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I think this article also goes a VERY LONG way to explaining this specific incident:

http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/alan-jones-i-led-this-charge/2005/12/12/1134236003153.html

Alan Jones is a right wing talkback shockjock DJ. He is foul and unrepentingly stupid. And he said this, among other things:

When John called on Tuesday to bluntly recommend vigilante action — "If the police can't do the job, the next tier is us" — Jones did not dissent. "Yeh. Good on you, John." And when he then offered a maxim his father had picked up during the war — "Shoot one, the rest will run" — the broadcaster roared with laughter. "No, you don't play Queensberry's rules. Good on you, John."

It was horrible stuff, larded with self-congratulation. And pity poor Berta — "not of a Middle Eastern family" — who tried to argue there were two sides to this story. When she reported hearing "really derogatory remarks" aimed at Middle Eastern people on Cronulla beach, Jones cut her off: "Let's not get too carried away, Berta. We don't have Anglo-Saxon kids out there raping women in western Sydney."

*boggle*. Yeah ok. White kids don't rape, in Sydney?

Hey sedition law, cop this: KILL ALAN JONES NOW. PLEASE.

About ten years ago, I had a job doing phone surveys for Roy Morgan in Sydney for a few months... one of the questions I asked was about the Mabo legislation. I still don't know what it is, but the people of Queensland had VERY pointed things to say about it, and weren't worried if I thought them racist at all... that's the closest I got to it, by and large I found Sydney quite integrated and largely harmonious.

Melbourne has that other loathsome toad Andrew Bolt spouting the same bile in the Herald Sun, and if nothing like Cronulla happens in Springvale or somewhere like that, all it might mean is radio has more clout than the print media.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 02:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Mmm *nods*. Which leads me to a point I've been pondering. Why *does* this always happen in Sydney? Is it the spread of the demographic or something? Is it the culture up there? (NSW has always seemed a lot more AUSSIE OY OY than Vic has).

I'm not sure anything of this scale's ever happened in Melb. I'm not boasting or anything; I know places like Frankston and Dandenong and Broady are bad. But for eg: those Salt nightclub asian gang related stabbings a few years ago. That didnt result in a bunch of rabid chapel st yuppies "relcaiming our clubs".

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 02:47 (eighteen years ago) link

As I recall they were a bit more 'Asian' v 'Asian', ie not worth the general populace getting too panicky over. Also, King Street on Sat night is a place nobody with half an un-booze-addled brain cell would stray near, regardless of what color they were. With nightclubs it's all part of the territory, unlike maybe Brighton or Sandy Beach.

My feeling is that racism is in fact more prevalent in Australia than in the UK. In the UK, when people want to express some racist sentiment, they invariably surround it with a welter of caveats ("I'm not racist, but...), suggesting that it really isn't cool to be seen as racist. You rarely get someone saying something out-and-out racist ("I don't like blacks") unless he/she's a National Front skinhead or something. But in Australia, people can be disarmingly frank about their racism. On plenty of occasions when I've been in Australia (mostly Sydney) people have come straight out in conversation to say they don't like Asians or Aborigines - when they must know from the way I look and talk that I'd be offended. This suggests to me that this sort of casual racism is quite a bit more acceptable in Australia than it would be in the UK.

jz, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 11:09 (eighteen years ago) link

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 11:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Interesting, because I felt at least casual racism more strongly in the UK than I do here. Admittedly in the UK I was staying in the midlands - probably the equivalent of staying in Dubbo or something. Everyone was all "greedy paki shopkeepers" and "don't get your wallet out in public there's black guys over there" and the like though. It really startled me.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 12:56 (eighteen years ago) link

There's a provincial/metropolitan divide when it comes to racism in both the UK and Australia (and probably everywhere else as well). Basically, if I'm in some small country town in the middle of nowhere in Australia, I'm going to assume a person's racist unless I find out otherwise. In the big city, it's generally the other way around, with a fair amount of social pressure not to say anything overtly racist. At least that's the case for London, but I'd say it's less the case for Sydney.

jz, Tuesday, 13 December 2005 13:04 (eighteen years ago) link

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 13:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Anyway, the amount of effort Trayce is devoting to attacking me here is pretty funny. Are you going to address the fact that your position is essentially that of "moderate" white middle class intolerance?

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 13:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Do you hate wops too?

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 14:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Jon's point appears to be "we shouldn't make pronouncements about certain ethnic groups being racist or conservative because such pronouncements themselves are quid pro quo racist, and exhibit the secret desire of the white middle class to be racist via intolerance of intolerance."

This isn't such a bad argument actually: i do think that poo-pooing particular groups for their lack of enlightened tolerance is one of the favourite ways for liberals to indulge in "safe" put-down generalizations about other groups.

HOWEVER, I think this is an unfortunate tendency rather than an obstacle which makes talking about inter-racial tension in Australia in any terms other than "white liberals are crap" impossible. While we cleverly diagnose our own prejudicial tendencies, people of all varieties are still voting for John Howard, advocating we lock up refugees, calling up talkback radio and advocating we beat the living shit out of arabs, homosexuals etc. This goes on while we second-guess ourselves into a neat little corner.

Ultimately, we want to stop these things from happening (and yes, that's a non-exhaustive list, obviously there are other crap things about Australian society), and we won't do that until we understand what motivates people to do the sorts of things listed above, and a lot of the motivation involved is bound up in experiences of ethnicity. I don't think it's racism to note that, for example, a lot of former immigrants will freely tell you that they don't like asylum seekers because they want a free ride, whereas former waves of immigrants built themselves up with no help or handouts. The challenge (and it's not one I pretend to know the immediate answer to) is to understand what is informing this position, so we can persuade a person to modify it (and a big part of knowing how to do this will surely involve understanding unromantically why e.g. I'm predisposed towards helping refugees ).

It's pretty crap to decide as a result of this that the problems of the world are caused by uncivilised brutes fighting amongst themselves in a beery, bogan form of tribal warfare, shrug and return to one's own concerns with a sad "if only they could be enlightened like us" sigh - and this is the trap which the white middle class observer of intolerance amongst ethnic groups is highly prone to walk right into.

But to imply that this is what Trayce is ridiculous considering the paucity of evidence to that effect.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 22:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Sorry, that last line should be "that this is what Trayce is doing is ridiculous..."

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 22:45 (eighteen years ago) link

And I wasn't doing anything of the sort anyway. I was saying "isn't it sad and stupid that a new migrant to Australia will turn around later and abuse/pick on lower pecking order new migrants". It happens everywhere, not just here. I used "greek/italian" simply as an example, because I have grown up around mediterranean european migrants both at home and here in Melbourne. I could just've easily said "chinese" or "lebanese", it didnt matter WHO, I was illustrating a point!

And the issue sparking this discussion is a riot started by white guys. Am I racist for pointing THAT out? No?

Jon has chosen to furiously focus in on me, and then baffligly say I'm attacking him (???) because for some reason, I'm this weeks punching bag.

I'm actually really interested in it too, Jon. Why are you angry at me? You surely can see you've misread the situation and I'm happy to continue to restate and clarify my point.

I'm pretty ignorant about this sort of thing. Yes, I'm from a migrant family, but one that's pretty much completely Australianised anyway, so the cultures and beliefs I got were Australian. One thing that is part of some sections of, say, the Lebanese community, is, and I'll use the darkest word for it, systematic brainwashing. In a secular (and yes, we are still very secular) country, we're pretty uncomfortable with people who would say they are Muslim first and Australian second, because denominationalism has always been second to nationalism.

It's not unique to any particular ethnic group or religion. It's the same as fundyism or nazism or anything. And certainly, the idea amongst "white" Australians that they "own" the beach, or the suburbs around it is part of some kind of sick, misguided social conditioning too, and I think that article about mateship and allegiance is pretty much bang on. All I know is that I'm very uncomfortable, and it frankly sucks that tolerant, open-minded people feel bad for what other people are doing.

I agree that we need to start modifying, but god knows where. Our values-neutral schools? Hardly. Parents? Ah, but that's the genesis in some parts.

This not very coherent, bit rambling and rubbish, damn you Finney for raising the bar. But I just had an interesting chat with a colleague who married and divorced a Lebanese man, and it was food for thought.

Anyway among all that tripe I quite missed this very interesting point Ed made:

In a secular (and yes, we are still very secular) country, we're pretty uncomfortable with people who would say they are Muslim first and Australian second, because denominationalism has always been second to nationalism.

I think this is otm. Partly because it is an "other" religion, but more because it seems generally speaking Australians are rather unreligious. And yes, I imagine a lot of people would feel threatened/unfcomfortable at people like those clerics who've been declaring they want to Islamiscise the whole country.

I'm sure a hardcore christian would have no problem with another christian saying they wanted to turn everyone to christ as part of their duty, so it is hypocritical.

I dont think the Cronulla riots have much to do with any kind of religion though. Its all about the history of that area, it'd seem. Ive been vaguely aware of the Lakemba problems since the "leb gang rape" thing ACA/60 minuutes hammered away at in recent years, but I wasn't at all aware of this territorial pissing going on at Cronulla and Brighton le Sands beaches.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 00:12 (eighteen years ago) link

I really don't think you're likely to have much of an insight into the teenage/early-20s descendents of Italian and Greek people who immigrated to Australia 1950-1976 as a social group.

kit, i read something about Italian/Greek's fighting with 'surfies' (against 'rockers'?) back in the 60's and migrant families from Bankstown being shuntered off to the unfashionable end of the beaches. what was the deal then?

It may be that there's now a struggle for power going on within the white population as well as between various ethnic, social, religious and cultural groups. Who owns Australua? One thing that does seem clear, however, is that there is no future for the white contigent that stands for footy, meat pies and Holden cars: they are numerous, but increasingly outnumbered with every decade. Everyone knows it wasnt the lebanese that hit the WTC, right? i guess they're saying 'middle eastern decent', which is probably confusing people a whole lot.

i have some real love/hate issues when it comes to australia. mostly the latter when it comes to the sutherland shire. i feel a whole lot better about australia since i left it, but when i think of an australian i still see something like this in my minds eye:

"isnt it an irony that recent immigrants are stupid enough to be racist to other recent immigrants and - even more stupidly - to koori australians"

It depends how long you think it takes to integrate with the attitudes of the population at large. I mean, ideally, the Italian/Greek immigrants and fifth-generation Australians would be banding together to beat down these horrible Lebanese people, but there are deeper prejudices at work!

If you directly ask a second-generation citizen in the US what their nationality is, you'll usually hear "I'm American." Now, if you ask someone in the population at large, "What are you, you know, ethnically?" you'll get either a very direct answer because there's still a clear lineage or ties to an ethnic community, or something more hazy. I, for one, have no clue how I'd answer that. I usually say my family's been in the area a long time and I have some sort of vague European ancestry. Is this similar in Australia?

http://www.theage.com.au/news/world/nz-posters-call-for-race-riots/2005/12/15/1134500941776.html

Posters inciting racial violence and calling for an "Australian style" riot in New Zealand have received condemnation from the nation's politicians.

The posters, pasted up at Wellington railway stations, called for New Zealanders to show "white power".

They follow a weekend race riot in Sydney's south and days of apparent payback attacks across several south-east suburbs.

"If Sydney can do it so can we ... let's take back our land" the posters say.

United Future leader Peter Dunne said the race-fuelled violence in Sydney is not something New Zealand should emulate.

"There is much to admire about Australia but copying the stupid attitudes of drunken thugs at Cronulla in Sydney is not the way forward for a peaceful New Zealand," he said.

"When the police catch up with these idiots, I hope part of their punishment will be a lesson in New Zealand's demographic trends which will show them they're fighting a losing battle."

The NZ National Party was also quick to condemn the posters.

"There is no place in New Zealand for these kinds of threatening, inflammatory actions," party leader Don Brash said.

"The idea that some people cannot have the same depth of feeling for this country because of the colour of their skin is bigoted nonsense."

The posters were pasted up yesterday at railway stations in Wellington's western suburbs, Johnsonville and Khandallah and have been attributed to white supremacist group - White Crusaders of the Racial Holy War.

Dr Brash said the group was "a small, fascist underbelly, hell-bent on causing division and destroying New Zealand's egalitarian ethos ... they are thugs and bigots".

Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres said he had not heard of the group.

But he was not surprised it existed in NZ.

A draconian law prohibiting indigenous Australians from entering central Brisbane after dark may still exist, an activist says.

Heather Castledine - co-ordinator of a celebratory march marking the second anniversary of prime minister Kevin Rudd's apology to the stolen generation - claims Aborigines may be technically banned from entering the area.

"They were banned from since the beginning of settlement," she said today, ahead of the walk from Boundary St at Spring Hill to Boundary St at West End.

I had heard that was why these streets were called Boundary, but now confirmed.

maybe shd be renamed imo. Especially considering west end is like the 'forward-thinking'/bohemian hub of Brisbane and it's its main street lol.

And that the majority of the reported incidents of assaults that are quoted by the police are actually robberies. Of 7/11s and taxis. Which are majority staffed by Indian/Sri Lankans.

(not that it is ANY EXCUSE for assaults/robbers, it just goes a small way to explaining the sudden (?) disparity).

millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Monday, 15 February 2010 03:12 (fourteen years ago) link

Trayce's point about 7/11s and taxis is true to an extent but obv many of these attacks have been occuring when the victims are walking to and from train stations, work, home etc - i.e. in situations where statistically they are (or should be) no more likely to be a target than members of any other ethnic group in the same area.

I think the issue poses an interesting conundrum:

1) some people say it's racist

2) some people say they're opportunistic crimes (i.e. Indians represent "easy targets" as they often carry expensive electronic devices etc. use public transport late at night and live in poorer areas).

It seems to me that both of these things are true, to the extent that such opportunistic crimes are to some extent racist. Which, I think, holds true in two ways:

1) the disproportionate targeting of Indians involves racial profiling - Indian students as cashed-up soft targets.

2) I think there's a certain expression of thwarted class resentment here - i.e. Indians frequently are renting in areas dominated by poor "white trash" but aren't (or don't appear to be) as poor themselves - certainly they're better educated, more upwardly mobile, consequently more likely to succeed by and large. I wouldn't be surprised if the "racist twist" to the attacks is a sense of meting out payback for the victim's apparent material success - this seems typical of a lot of uninformed xenophobic politics of some unemployed and underemployed peeps, who don't hate rich white people (who they never see anyway due to geographical separation) so much as recent migrant (or transient international student) communities who they perceive as leapfrogging past them on the lower rungs of the heirarchy, stealing "their" jobs etc.

Katter is a crazed loon who is a complete joke to just about everyone in Australia under the age of 65 bar some support in the racist Deep North. He's as representative of Australia in about the same way that Tommy Robinson is representative of the UK.

There's a huge amount of racism in Australia. But having lived for long periods in both France and the UK, I don't personally think the problem is any bigger in Australia than it is in those two countries. I've certainly encountered a lot of shocking, barefaced racism in France. If I was an Arab, and I had the choice to live in either Australia or France, I know which one I'd choose.

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 16 August 2018 00:40 (five years ago) link

There's less of that barefaced insults type here (yer Blair Cottrels and whatnot aside) but there's a real creep of everyday people hating on, as an example, outspoken Aus Muslims for daring to have an opinion on their own country. The avalanche of shit copped by Yassmin Abdel-Magied was just pathetic. Thing is, I cant work out if thats not just racism but also a weird prickly insular protectiveness, if you poke ANYTHING to do with ANZACs/soldiers/the war a certain set of the community goes INSANE. And they aren't all old people either - I see it from a lot of young white men (well, if nasty facebook abuse is anything to go by anyway)

And while in her case, that was genuine racism ("how dare a MUSLIM tell us how to think on ANZAC day go back to yr own country rarrr froth"), its also happened to people like ... I forget her name, the gappy toothed feminist comedian who got in hot water for razzing on ANZACs a few years back.

“This sort of speech has no place in Australia’s parliament in 2018, or in Melbourne for that matter, where it’s impossible to grab a coffee these days without being accosted by a Sudanese criminal”.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton echoed the Prime Minister’s comments. “I never once used the term ‘White Australia Policy’ when suggesting that white South Africans asylum seekers should be given preference over non-white asylum seekers. Mr Anning should be ashamed,” he said.

Yep that's pretty much pitch perfect! Dutton is absolute scum but it's Turnbull the enabler that really makes my blood boil

Tommy Robinson's not an elected politician, also he's just out of prison. You're probably on safer ground with France.

I forget her name, the gappy toothed feminist comedian who got in hot water for razzing on ANZACs a few years back.
Catherine Deveny?

Yumi Stynes also copped it over insulting Aussie Hero(tm) Ben Roberts-Smith. George Negus got off easy. I wonder why.

(Ben's having his own problems come to light recently.)

Yes, Deveny. I'm not a fan of hers but she shouldntve copped the shit she did over that.

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 24 August 2018 03:43 (five years ago) link

Here's what I don't understand - why did those 3 senators rock up to the press yesterday and resign on the grounds that "Turnbull no longer has the numbers", and yet the spill motion result was 45-40 - meaning Turnbull would've had the numbers to block the spill, but for those 3 senators?

ScoMo's LNP I presume - well, I shouldn't, but I hope, I guess - will lose the election, which will probably mean that Dutton, Abbott & their cronies will start to say that the election would've been winnable had the LNP pandered further to racists under Sgt Dutton. I suppose it's still a better outcome than Dutton as PM now, but when "catastrophic mess resulting in bigoted moron becoming PM" still works out to be the preferred option then its hard to feel any relief.

monotony, Friday, 24 August 2018 04:20 (five years ago) link

Also fuck turnbull forever for so many reasons but especially the way he's going to claim marriage equality as his great legacy. He did everything he could to slow down that change and protect himself, and put hundreds of thousands of people (me included) through hell in the process.
