Anyone seen it?

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 20 January 2006 12:24 (twenty years ago)

Or has it been harpooned by Japanese tourists on Vauxhall Bridge?

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 20 January 2006 12:26 (twenty years ago)

* insert joke about "spouting hot air" *

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 20 January 2006 12:27 (twenty years ago)

I was expecting a joke about John Prescott taking a dip first, but carry on.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 20 January 2006 12:30 (twenty years ago)

Ah, that'll be the Leviathan then. End of the world is nigh, chaps.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 20 January 2006 12:35 (twenty years ago)

20 foot is a bit small for a Leviathan

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 20 January 2006 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Thank fuck for that then.

Sky News are now running live coverage from their helicopter:

"SKY NEWS ALERT: WHALE IN THE RIVER THAMES"

...says the breaking news banner.

It's down near Chelsea now.

That's amazing. No one I work with believes me though. I have now sent round the BBC link.

What time is it due in Maidenhead?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:16 (twenty years ago)

He's beached himself. Tide's out, so he should refloat, but that's provided he doesn't freak out or suffer organ collapse.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:18 (twenty years ago)

Stuck next to Battersea power station.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:19 (twenty years ago)

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:19 (twenty years ago)

He's been refloated after three builders waded in and splashed at him to scare him back into the water.

Go builders.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:22 (twenty years ago)

...but don't whales usually beach themselves when they are ill? Instead of spashling at the poor whale, why didn't they call a vet?

Maybe he wanted to adpot a stray dog.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:24 (twenty years ago)

Can't someone nip over with a packet of crill?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Or a big cuttle fish? No, hold on, that's budgies...

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Apparently there's a second whale hanging out just off Southend, possibly looking for his pal.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Considerate Constructors.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking that pilot whales are quite gregarious. A lot of strandings have involved quite a few individuals at a time, so I was a little surprised that this was just the one by itself.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:40 (twenty years ago)

You'd think pilot whales wouldn't get lost. Or am I thinking of navigator whales?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Turns out it's a northern bottlenose whale.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Ah well, that explains it

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:54 (twenty years ago)

It's in all kinds of bother now, stuck in the shallows between a pontoon and chelsea embankment.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:56 (twenty years ago)

This is awesome. I want it to happen in Dawlish, in The Brook. You London bastards get all the fun.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:58 (twenty years ago)

I saw it! Followed it down to Battersea then had to head back to work :( It didn't look too happy, thrashing about a bit in the shallows. But that was about half an hour ago.

beanz (beanz), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:11 (twenty years ago)

woah, i just saw it outside county hall. splashing around all over the place. is very sad. aren't they supposed to have amazing radar systems to prevent them swimming into narrow channels or something?

barbarian cities (jaybob3005), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Experts say it's probably ill. And now it's bleeding too.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:17 (twenty years ago)

This thread is getting too upsetting now

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:18 (twenty years ago)

oh that's horrible.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:20 (twenty years ago)

Isn't the London Aquarium in the basement of County Hall? Surely they would have some kind of vet or at least marine life specialist there who could help the poor beast?

filled the fjords of my brain (kate), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:21 (twenty years ago)

There are many many experts trying to help, yes. They're all over the news. But I guess there's not much you can do with a poorly whale that heads upstream to die.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:23 (twenty years ago)

This is so depressing :( Why can't a whale in the Thames be as fun as it sounds?

melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:25 (twenty years ago)

from BBC 20 minutes ago:

Liz Sandeman, a medic of the Marine Connection, a whale and dolphin protection charity, accompanied the RNLI to examine the animal and said it looked "quite healthy and quite relaxed".

I was just believing whoever said it was bleeding, here. I've got news 24 on in the next room but I'm not really paying attention. They did say though, earlier, that whales generally do things like this if they're old or ill.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:28 (twenty years ago)

I know there's probably some rare creatures in the homes of that part of London, but still, I thought vets were more at the livestock / household pets end of the scale than the specialised form of giant marine life end. I could be wrong though.

Who is responsible for murdering the whale

The heartles way in which the whale lost his life would be a great cause for shame in any compassionate community. However, BBC rationalizes the misguided killing as "the most humane" way that was possible to achieve in this situation, to sooth the conscience of its TV fee-paying fellow Brits. However, there is no doubt that heartless handling of the big animal has not only caused his death, but also, it has causet imessurable suffering. Had this happened to some British person in American hospital, the lawsuit would certainly follow and the Brits would be greatly excited, like in the case of the killer nanny etc.

But who is to blame? The incompetent, heartles "saviours" who only cared for publicity and their overpaid sallary, to pay for the expensive goods the in Britain's overblown pound sterling. Cold materialism of the routhhles Brits, who keep their murderous instinct from raping India in colonial times to bombing Iraq, and killing people as well as animals in their "gentle" way. The henious criminals of the British islands are the worst filth on this Earth, culling cows, whales and people alike to satisfy their genocidial urges.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 21 January 2006 20:47 (twenty years ago)

From wikipedia: Many people now believe that this whale has increased the profile of whales to the public, and the opposition to the whaling industry. Many whale experts that were interviewed on Sky News believed this whale will leave a legacy, and it will have helped whales across the planet. They also took note of the fact that the Thames Whale was seen around the Palace of Westminster, the British seat of government.

At least he died happy in the knowledge that he helped whales across the planet.

Mmm, I noticed that a whale dying just outside Grimsby docks doesn't get quite the same acreage of newsprint as one swimming through central London. In fact, I suspect that several pods of whales could sail up the Humber on a barge, performing a whale-written musical about a sad, tragic doomed love affair between two whales from rival warring pods, and it wouldn't get any airtime.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Sunday, 5 February 2006 20:26 (twenty years ago)

I mean, the dead whale in the Humber barely got in the news *here*, and you could probably see the bloody thing if you went up on the top floor of the shopping centre carpark with a pair of binoculars.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Sunday, 5 February 2006 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Well, what the heck is on the banks of the Humber except, like Hull?

My office is only a few hundred yards from the banks of the Humber, for one thing!

Kate, what is on the banks of the Humber is a DEAD WHALE! Today, I was looking at volunteering opportunities for clients at work, and I noticed that the Marine Rescue people are advertising for extra staff in case any more whales go sightseeing up the Thames. What their advert actually said was "in the wake of the whale in the Thames.." and I have no idea if they intended to make a shit pun or not.
