LA CA USA?

Hey, so I'm for real going to LA this time, barring any more death threats and bankrupcies. I'm getting my JetBlue flight and would like to know how to get from Burbank Airport to Standard Hotel Downtown. I don't have a car, kinda because my drivers license expired 4 years ago. I think some Metroline train or something goes to Union Station? Is that far from Standard Hotel? Oh No. Am I going to have to take buses all over town?

Also, anything fun going on Feb 8 - Feb 14? And want to hang out? I'm staying at the Standard one night, then staying with a friend in west hollywood the rest of the time. I think. He doesn't know yet though.

or is it better to fly to long beach.

or better to pay extra $20 to fly song airlines to lax?

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Well, LAX gets you on the Metro line via connections at least.

Might be up for something on the tenth or eleventh, depending!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Although yes, Burbank Airport is a direct stop, so take that:

http://www.metrolinktrains.com/?play_at=map

Ventura County line

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:09 (twenty years ago)

Although I see it's also called the Bob Hope Airport now. Hm.

MTA map for connections from Union Station:

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:10 (twenty years ago)

...looking at all that, if you wanted to stick to light rail, your best stop is Hollywood/Highland on the Red Line and then bus/cab from there, though it's much more direct to go from Burbank over the Hollywood Hills -- light rail takes you in a big loop, essentially.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:14 (twenty years ago)

maybe i'll hitchhike.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

does the hotel not have a shuttle?

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:17 (twenty years ago)

A-Ha. Just bought my ticket. So it looks like for real hopefully this time I'll be in LA. My first time in California!! Where's Spencer?

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

would like to know how to get from Burbank Airport to Standard Hotel Downtown.

Metrolink from Burbank Airport to Union Station. Red Line from Union Station to 7th St./Metro Center stop. Foot power from there to 6th and Flower where the hotel is.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Stranger has occured.

Long Beach Airport doesn't have a direct connection to the Blue Line. LAX at least would give you the Green/Blue/Red Line option, but Hollywood/Highland is still the closest stop to the hotel. And yeah, does the hotel have a shuttle or not? Spencer will be aware of your visit, I'm sure.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Wait, Elvis, 6th and Flower? According to this:

http://www.standardhotel.com/standard_downtownla_spa.html

...the hotel is at Sweetzer and Sunset.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait, total brainlock on my part -- I was confusing the two locations. Elvis is right, follow his directions.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:22 (twenty years ago)

I definitely want to go to Sushi Gen in downtown, per gygax's recommendation. And I might be able to swing a comp'ed meal at Koi, is it any good?

I want to go to the Chateau Marmont and also I kinda want to go to Disneyland!!

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Well, Disneyland is a bit out of your way! Easy enough to take the train down to Anaheim Station, at least.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:36 (twenty years ago)

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:37 (twenty years ago)

if you take the metro to Vermont & Sunset, then walk a ways, you can visit Hollyhock House

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 21:59 (twenty years ago)

im going to rent "where the day takes you" and try to see all the movie locations!

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 22:39 (twenty years ago)

the #10 Big Blue Bus will take you to Santa Monica (as well as some downtown/civic center attractions that are also walkable from your hotel - the music center, MOCA, Olvera St, the library).

From Santa Monica, you could catch Big Blue Buses to Venice, Marina del Rey, Westwood/UCLA, Beverly Hills, Culver City/Palms, and Pacific Palisades.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 22:54 (twenty years ago)

And I might be able to swing a comp'ed meal at Koi, is it any good?

The food? Not really. If you want to celebrity-gawk, go on a Monday night.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 22:57 (twenty years ago)

Where can I see comedy mystery man Spencer Chow?

phantasy bear (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 22:58 (twenty years ago)

Long Beach Airport doesn't have a direct connection to the Blue Line.

It does if you take Long Beach Transit #111 from the airport to the downtown Long Beach transit mall.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Ah, clarity. I shall keep that in mind!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:05 (twenty years ago)

maybe i'll go to SF for 2 days though. like on southwest. i havent bought my return ticket yet, so maybe i can fly one way to SF, then one way back to nyc on jetblue.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:11 (twenty years ago)

SF's alright, I suppose.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:21 (twenty years ago)

these people will take you to Disneyland (if you get yourself to the westside early am for them to pick you up), but LA is Disneyland enough itself, afaic

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:46 (twenty years ago)

i love disneyland! they have a bar there now it makes it better! it sucks with more than 2 people though

howell huser (chaki), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:54 (twenty years ago)

this may be slightly out of date, but it gives you points of interest and connecting bus lines at the various metro stops.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:57 (twenty years ago)

Phil, I'm sure you know this.. but basically: you can fit the entire island of Manhattan *and* the city/county of San Francisco as an overlay over Los Angeles, and you'd only cover the Santa Monica/Westwood/Century City part.. that's about 10% (if even that) of Greater Los Angeles.

Dom iNut (donut), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 00:01 (twenty years ago)

This site is a general guide to getting around.

the Hollywood DASH Bus gets you from Hollywood/Highland to WeHo.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 00:26 (twenty years ago)

wow, thanks for all your help!

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 00:29 (twenty years ago)

Map of downtown (and exposition park) bus routes

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 00:29 (twenty years ago)

the DASH Ho/WeHo also gets you within striking distance of Spencer's favorite coffee shop and links you up with the DASH Fairfax, which gets you to Melrose (and La Brea) shopping and the LACMA and Peterson

the DASH Hollywood-Wilshire route runs between the Hollywood and Vine and Wilshire and Western (near the Wiltern) metro steps, and takes you past the Paramount Studios gates (wonderful, but they'll shoo you away after a picture or two) and within walking distance of Amoeba

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 00:52 (twenty years ago)

riding the Metro Wilshire bus end to end would provide a pretty good overview of LA outside of Hollywood and South-Central

(except Chicago and SF and a lot of others I've never been to) (these are also potentially useful for me someday, though my favorite thing to do in LA is drive)

you can catch the 761from Westwood up to the Getty, which isn't worth going out of your way for as a museum (unlike the Norton Simon), but is interesting architecturally and has great views

(i'll stop now)

five months pass...
Which one is better. The Standard Downtown or the West Hollywood? I stayed at the Hollywood one last time, and liked it, but the Downtown one is a little cheaper and I heard is a little less douche'y? I'm coming again in the end of August, right before Magic/Project/Pool in Vegas.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 9 July 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

downtown is likely less douchey but you know skim milk vs. whole milk

it's still milk

can you LA geeks break this down for me -- exactly what falls within the jurisdiction of the city of los angeles, meaning all those unincorporated "cities" and towns that are annexed by LA? it's a little hard to tell what's part of LA and what's just its own town within LA county. (obv i'm not talking about places like pasadena that have their own self-supporting infrastructure and municipal elections.)

Fsck Washing Ong's Hat (Chris Barrus), Monday, 10 July 2006 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

i had the same question(about Altadena, my 'unincorporated L.A.' hometown just north of Pasadena) and that almanac comes this close to answering but doesn't. Are we in limbo? I know Altadena is not self-supporting but we don't get to vote in either Pasadena or L.A. municipal elections. Upside: the ticket-happy Pasadena police rarely venture here and L.A. County sheriffs don't give a shit about traffic infractions. CHP has a station here but only a handful of cars.

after the quintron/miss pussycat show last night (best show i've seen in years) i gave a buddy a ride home to glendale. on the way back to los feliz with my gf i get pulled over by a couple of glendale cops. okay so i had four beers over the course of the evening and i'm feeling it a little bit. but just a minor buzz. so the cop has me get out of the car and makes me back up away from it with my hands on my head, asking me if i've ever been arrested. he frisks me and sits me down on the curb. does the same to the gf and then he tosses my car. he searches it inside and out and at one point even pulls this piece from a barbel out of my trunk and asks, "what's this?", all suspicious-like and i said it was from a barbel and he asks, "why is it in your trunk?" and i replied, "it must have been left in there while i was moving."
so he comes over, spits out some of the dip he's got in his mouth, tells me to get the car registered in california, and lets us go.

i thought i was fucked for sure, though, i could very well have failed a breathalyzer.

lesson: i'll never have more than one drink if i'm driving!

This isn't nearly as bad as it could be… I don't think… the whole stretch of Hollywood/Sunset between Western and Vine is just crappy auto places, Dennys, Home Depot, isn't it?

Damn. And here I was thinking about filling that void with chocolate, cigarettes, and raunchy sex.

Good thing I returned.

So yes, FAP soonish. Next Saturday, maybe?

Very possibly maybe.

I've two critters that might be dying, though, and so I may need to stay home and be with them. But with luck they'll be spunky and chipper by then and I'll be able to contribute witticisms and other horrid things to a conversation.

mslaura, are you the one who broke your bf's penis while riding it? for some reason, thats what i relate your name to.

*sigh* Yep. That's me.

You know, thanks to my revealing that horrid experience to the ILX community, I will NEVER find a lover here.

And it wasn't broke, per-se. More like kind of really bent for the long-term.

I wonder what he's doing these days.

Tell us you're coming so we can plan: RSVP.

MobMov Hollywood presents, in partnership with the Steve Allen Theater...

"PETEY WHEATSTRAW:
The Devil's Son-in-Law"

Presented simultaneously in the parking lot as a drive-in, and in the theater. Followed by live in person appearance and Q&A with Rudy Ray Moore, a.k.a. DOLEMITE!

Petey Wheatstraw (Rudy Ray Moore) is a candidate to become the devil's son-in-law. The storyline is a scaffolding on which Rudy Ray Moore's standup humor can be unfolded. Beginning life as the afterbirth to a watermelon, the young Wheatstraw becomes a martial artist, but is unable to best the evil comedy team of Leroy and Skillet, who also indulge in wholesale murder. Satan restores the comedians' victims to life, and charges Petey with the task of marrying his clock-stoppingly ugly daughter to giving him a grandchild. When Petey attempts to default on the deal, he is pursued by the devil's henchmen.

Hmm...so what are folks doing Saturday? I'm planning on an Amoeba run and would be up for at least lunch. Possibly I can hang around later as well if we wanted to do drinks and dinner as well or instead, but my plans are still coalescing a bit.

*(as i post this from my RI woodland hideaway there are honest-to-goodness deer prancing the fuck around immediately outside my ground-floor window. i could hock a loogey and hit one if i wanted. but deer are damned scary when there are ten of them distanced by only a thin screen. also, they're already breathing heavily and i think they might feel randy.)

Damn, Atreyu! (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

Deer lust, a suspect thing.

Anyway, three for lunch or dinner or whatever. Afternoon drinks on either side, depending, seems key.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 03:00 (nineteen years ago)

yeah we're having some mint julep type weather in this bitch. Let's go! I don't think I have plans, a Vegas trip is falling through as we speak.
glowing from a PAGEANT OF THE MASTERS weekend in Ned's neck of the woods(we stayed around the corner from you at the Westin off Bristol! the pageant/hotel stay was a semi-surprise birthday present from the folks so I wasn't sweating the details, I wish I'd known we were gonna be that close, it didn't really click until I saw "the Lab"(we went the wrong way at first). Pageant is magnificent actually, even with bad seats, and there's an absolutely ungodly display of K-12 art talent in one corner of the surrounding exhibit. With my mom in tow we spent more time at the South Coast plaza the next day, naturally.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 04:10 (nineteen years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 05:36 (nineteen years ago)

Will be in LA Friday night through early Monday, nothing really planned besides visiting MI and the obligatory Amoeba stop.

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 05:46 (nineteen years ago)

How handy, seeing as I was doing Amoeba as well etc. Shoot me off yer phone number. (In fact, EVERYONE shoot me off your phone number -- except JBR's and Remy's, I definitely have those. Alas, I keep misplacing Tremendoid's. :-/ )

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 05:49 (nineteen years ago)

glowing from a PAGEANT OF THE MASTERS weekend in Ned's neck of the woods

If you had looked across Laguna Canyon Rd. from the Pageant and then up at the first row of houses, you probably would have seen me in my backyard.

Fsck Washing Ong's Hat (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 07:11 (nineteen years ago)

I keed, I keed... but I do like a waffle. Remy can't duck me forever!

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

Good Mr. Vic has indicated he's in as well. So as of right now, very tentative plan:

Pre-lunch -- Amoeba if anyone wants to join me (and of course you do, surely)

Lunch -- Roscoe's

Afterwards -- sweet drunkery somewhere that serves good mint juleps or the equivalent. Figueroa bar is fine by me but the idea needs to be where can we comfortably relax and chat in mid-afternoon weather in LA in the open air while shaded and on top of a building or the like. For instance. ;-)

Dinner perhaps. Play it by ear.

Rah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not ducking, just ineptly reclusive. See you this weekend?

Damn, Atreyu! (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

Darn, I think I'm going to be out of town most of the day on Saturday. I might be able to make it to the Figueroa Bar later, though.

I'd love to see Krrish in the Valley. Maybe Sunday afternoon?

Arthurgh! A Music War (Arthur), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 03:13 (nineteen years ago)

I should finish up at MI around 2 pm on Saturday, or maybe a little later, so up for whatever from there on out. Shoot me back your mobile, Ned?

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

I have heard of these cell phones. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, Saturday plans pretty well drawn together so if anyone else wants in, please say...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 July 2006 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

That was a VERY good day all around! Cheers to Remy, JBR, tremendoid, rogermexico, Vic and ALLAH FROG. Late lunch at Roscoe's, drinks and much good chat at the Figueroa into the early evening.

Next up will probably be Sunset Junction stuff, assuming that Arthur will be spinning at Akbar...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 July 2006 04:51 (nineteen years ago)

Absolute pleasure meeting everyone, and much abashed that I had to bow out early. Nothing better on a sweltering summer day than waffles and drinks...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 24 July 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

same here, always a pleasure. high adventure on(or near) the Figueroa rooftop! oh if the walls could talk they would have surely forgotten all about us by now. but seriously folks...

tremendoid (tremendoid), Monday, 24 July 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

The pool on the other hand, a different story. (And you know, thanks again to everyone who bought a round, I believe I was totally slack on that front! Will make it up to y'all.)

The City
(Hidalgo/Perez)

Come on lets go out tonight
out into the neon light
Sidwalk shining from the rain
from First and Hill to Sixth and Main

Two lovers kissing by the door
There's yelling from the second floor

Come on let's go get high
go out into the neon night
Hit every spot along the way
from Paramount to Cudahy

A man is calling out a name
A rose wrapped up in cellophane

Come on let's fall down tonight
shoot out all the neon lights
There's people dancing real slow
the music plays till the rooster crows

A friend is moving to Glendale for a while. How is it? I don't really know the LA area that well

Large Armenian community. The Brand Ave. area downtown is being redeveloped as fast as the planners can go, so there's quite a bit of short-term chaos, but in a couple years it might be pretty great. I'm looking for a place in Glendale at the moment... My neighborhood of choice is Montrose which is up in the hills above downtown.

The downside to Glendale is that none of the MTA subway trains run there. There's a Metrolink stop at the very bottom of town.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

brand books & bookfellows are a pair of good places to dig for used books.

It does seem too good to be true, doesn't it?

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

is Descanso Gardens in Montrose?

No. It's in La Canada/Flintridge (Montrose is nearby)

(and is it anything special?)

Depends if you're into flowers or not.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

Music Exchange was a good CD store there, but last time I looked for it I couldn't find a trace.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

really good bus service though, between the MTA buses and the glendale beeline or whatever it's called.
