i have had an orange and chicken noodle soup, what else should i do to conquer this illness? watch jurassic park on video? and how much will vicks vapo-rub cost at the convenience store? i don't want to go there and find out it's like four bucks or something.

ethan, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

also i'm really light-headed so if you to ask me for weird favours now's the time.

ethan, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm at home and not school because I was sick yesterday and today I'm a nervous wreck. You should watch Jurassic Park and sleep and eat really spicy things. Spicy things make your sinuses feel interesting, I think, when you're sick. I hope you feel better soon.

Maria, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah, a good strong vindaloo will soon sweat all the badness out of you, the best cold/flu remedy there is. Well, for me anyway.

chris, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

rub chilli on yr nostrils

you will soon not be worried about yr sinuses at all

mark s, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark speaks wisdom (no, really!). Our regular cold/sinus plug buster is getting spicy soups at Vietnamese restaurants. Sweet relief in a mere couple of minutes.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

whatever happens is ned's fault

mark s, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Chicken Vindaloo. Sweat the bastard virus out of your body.

Though, if you do snag that Massive Attack boxset (which I hope you will), that should send thee on thy way.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

jel, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I report back with the news that cold spicy things are not good, you should have hot spicy things.

Maria, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hot water and lemon.

I am home wrapped up in a scarf drinking lots of throat coat tea. Blech. I had to run over to Rite Aid for 3 more boxes of Puffs plus Lotion earlier.
heh, phone conversation from earlier:

Mom: Well, you said you were out walking around in the snow for hours on Tuesday.
Me: I'm not falling for that. Colds have an incubation period of way longer than 36 hours!
Mom: Well, I'm just saying...you should stop drinking so much coffee, too
Me: (ponders life without Dunkin Donuts, shudders in pain) yeah, whatever.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 9 January 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Any excuse to eat chillies is fine by me. Spicy foods work great on colds. And enormous doses of fruit. Alternatively, take pills.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 9 January 2004 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Top one, nice one, sorted.

Aha. I see.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 9 January 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Mind you, laksa for a cold is a great idea.

Unless you're me, who is allergic to chilli and spices, it gives me horrible clogged bleeding sinuses, which I'm suffering from today thanks to indulging in my newfound love of making lentil curries.

*snort, snuffle*

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 9 January 2004 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm loving the fact I can live off 3 bags of lentils and chickpeas for over a week cuz I'm broke. Just add whatever else is left in the house and eat with rice - yay!

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 9 January 2004 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'd do that too if I had the chance but my girlfriend is no lentil and rice fan.

None terribly well documented, but the better part of my college career could be considered one study. My one roommate who didn't believe in my NyQuil + red wine pre-emptive at-the-first-sign-of-symptoms cold cure could be considered the control I figure.

i am sick too. the weather here in philadelphia has been like, 12 degrees one day, 64 degrees the next. [im serious.] my lungs hurt, really really bad.

the weather here in philadelphia has been like, 12 degrees one day, 64 degrees the next. [im serious.]

Haha, it's hard to communicate just how erratic Philadelphia's weather has been for many years now.

I swear when I was a kid in Philadelphia in the 70s we had actual seasons. At least that's how I remember it. Maybe it's always been strangely erratic.

Anyway, sorry you are feeling so terrible. I don't like the sound of lungs hurting. I'm lucky that I hardly ever get chest colds. I just get endless near sinus infections.

RS LaRue (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry amateurist, i don't know what i'd do with a 103 degree fever. besides not now i had one, since i've never figured out how to read a thermometer.

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't 103 very high? Shouldn't you be in a hospital or something, amateurist? Seriously.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, go to the doctor, amateurist.

http://familydoctor.org/503.xml (a link from MedlinePlus)

High fevers, with temperatures of 103° and above, can signal a potentially dangerous infection. Contact your doctor in case of a high fever or if a lower fever doesn't resolve with simple treatments.

youn, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 05:54 (twenty-one years ago)

it went down to 101 after some ibuprofen. if it goes back up to 103 i'll go see a doctor.

i just wish philadelphia would pick a season and like, *go* with it. this is all probably fallout from the weather issues on the other side of the globe. also, i get sinus infections all the time. chest colds are rare, which is why this is fucking me up really good.

But maybe you should see a doctor one way or another if you haven't already. (It sounds like you are describing something that feels like more than just a chest chold.)

Then I had a fever all the next two days. Then I got a bad cough which turned into this terrible cold. Friday night, I had a sore throat really bad. I lose my voice on and off and sometimes feel scared that I can't breathe. So, now I've been sick for a week a half straight. TA DA! And this morning is one of those times I've lost my voice. GRRRR.

today i took my first sick-day from work in four years. turns out i have tonsillitis (viral rather than strep/bacterial, i think, which i suppose is a bonus).

if this isn't in some way connected to the fact i hammered the booze for four days last week (and - curses curses CURSES - smoked fags on saturday too), shortly after recovering from a nastier-than-i-gave-it-credit-for cold, i'll be surprised. so: self-inflicted misery all round. jesus!

i've spent most of the evening agonising about whether to go back to work tomorrow. on the whole, i don't think it's wise. i still feel fucking rotten, and i just don't think i'll be much use. "ah, but," says the work-ethic devil on my shoulder, "you're well enough to post to ILX, aren'tcha?"

in fairness, i'm not even sure i am. christ, i feel crap. ho well, soluble aspirin beckons. glug gargle splutter swear.

three weeks ago, like a smug toss, i said to mrs fiendish: "hey, i haven't even had as much as a sniffle in a year." well, now who's the tool? here's to health, being able to go to work, and being able to go to the gym again. hmph.

astor riviera (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 October 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

Don’t let your cold sore spread to your nose! I used to get cold sores that would take over a whole lip, and then spread up my face to the inside and outside of my nose, like a hideous herpes invasion intent on making me feel as awful as possible. I have never actually encountered pain as bad as a cold sore in the nose. To be fair I haven’t encountered much pain, but even so. Weeping sores bad.

Suckling robot at a warrior rave (alix), Monday, 17 October 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

I have a very sensitive nose as a result, or as a cause, and whenever I get a snotty cold I end up with painful nose sores (not actual cold sores though). I never see anyone else with them. Is it only my nose that objects to prolonged tissues, snot and blowing etc?

I have deja vu about this post. Have I already said this before?

Suckling robot at a warrior rave (alix), Monday, 17 October 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

I will not let it spread to my nose. Luckily, in the 20-odd years I've been getting this coldsore, in the same place, once every six months or so, it's usually not so bad. Unluckily it's dreadful this time and I can feel the pain all the way in my jaw.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 17 October 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

What are your symptoms? Have you seen a doctor?

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 10 August 2006 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

I saw a doctor, well an "apprentice doctor" - apparently I don't have pneumonia or bronchitis.

Really feverish, exhausted all the time, terrible smoker-style coughing constantly, non-stop shortness of breath, bad breath :(

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 10 August 2006 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

this past week i've been too nervous to sleep and i know it's going to catch up with me in a bad way.

Ari El-Pincus (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 10 August 2006 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

Well that sounds quite like bronchitis to me but then I am not a doctor, not even an apprentice one. Mind you, if it is something viral the usual prescription is nothing more than bed rest anyway.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 10 August 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

I am sitting at home with a glass of whisky before me, checking work emails. Do whisky and echinacea and black coffee complement one another, or do they not? Last night I had nine split-screen dreams going at any one time. Was interesting but wearying.

What an interesting last couple of posts to this thread.

Anyway, I feel like shite. Woke up several times in the night - to Dotun Adebayo on 5Live - with t-shirt absolutely drenched.

Forced self to come into work. Mainly to demonstrate to everyone how ill I really am so it's easier to have tomorrow off instead. Before christmas when everyone was taking days off I made some crack about how I hadn't been actually ill since freshers flu (many years ago) and that my immune system is solid as a rock. This was stupid.

I attribute being sick to the fact that I used to cycle everwhere, hence steering clear of infected feckas, and now i spend 2.5 hours on public transport each day. Sux

Upt0eleven, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 11:01 (eighteen years ago)

Leaving 5Live on all night would give me night sweats, too.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 11:02 (eighteen years ago)

granted 5live is obscenely terrible in the day but at night it can be uhmazin - albeit quite trippy on occasion. and Dotun is quite dudish.

Jaq might be right. Im feeling pretty suspicious about the chimchangas I ate Wednesday night. Does food poisoning last this long with periods of okay though? (i should note the periods of ok come only after taking hydrocodone)

Does hydrocodone slow down your GI tract? Some kinds of food poisoning can take 2-3 days to really hit, others take just a few hours. Hope you feel better soon sunny, stay hydrated as much as you can.

Ugh. I have a bad cold - again. Recently started working at a center frequented by germy (albeit v v cute) little jerks. Have a feeling I'll be getting sick a lot in the next couple months but will probably come through this with an iron immune system. Hopefully.

two weeks pass...

Y'know, feeling this way - nausea, headache, sinus acting up - is not a fun way to close the year. I have had trouble with my sinus since July. The last couple of days were so dreadful I started crying. This morning was slightly better, but now, after some woman was screaming in the shop, I have a fullblast headache again. (Client wasn't mad at me. I was at her though.LOL. Not really.) Been using the neti pot but I guess I should have some antibiotics again or see a specialist. :-( I'm so tired of this (and being tired).

Yeah "being on a plane" is the worst for bad germs, which is so awkward because it does often coincide with "gotta go back to work tomorrow" and Ive seen plenty of instances of ppl coming back from OS/big trip having to take an extra couple days off. I missed Thanksgiving due to illness. It's the second time in the space of a month that I've been sick. It's depressing.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Monday, 15 June 2015 19:25 (ten years ago)

Aw hey guys thanks. It's nothing super serious. I have IBS and so far of all the things I've tired nothing has helped. I often feel silly and as though my feeling so bad about it is not justified but it's impacting my life on a daily basis and hindering my activities and making me really upset. I am nauseous after 75% of my meals. I threw up my dinner 2x last week, and by about 2:00 pm on most days my stomach gets so swollen that I legitimately look about 6 months pregnant. It's horribly uncomfortable and nothing has given me relief. Last week I was in bed by 9 four nights because I felt so awful lying down and sleeping was the only way I could get comfortable. I'm exhausted all the time and clothes that I put on in the morning are too tight to the point of being uncomfortable by the time I go home. That's not exactly helping my pre-exisiting body image issues which in turns makes me anxious which in turn triggers the IBS. I'm seeing a therapist, a nutritionist and a GI doc. The later now has me on hardcore probiotics, metamucil and a laxative. We'll see if this helps. Sorry to go on. I'm just so fucking tired of feeling sick.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 15 June 2015 19:45 (ten years ago)

ugh E, that sucks. i hope the new treatment gives you some relief

i think i cried every other day for a month when my GERD was at it's worst, it's such a horrible feeling when all that is physically going on

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 15 June 2015 19:50 (ten years ago)

Yeah. I'm basically trying everything I can and hopefully one day something will work but right now I'm just so frustrated. I think I'm going to try acupuncture and maybe a super strict elimination diet next. I'll figure it out. Thanks for letting me vent.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 15 June 2015 19:56 (ten years ago)

ooooff. Anticipating feeling terrible after eating food has to be the worst. And feeling horrible at work is really, really demoralizing. Good luck with the meds combo. Is your therapist also offering any thoughts on meditation type things? Having had to deal with anxiety, maybe you explored that in the past already.

ljubljana, Monday, 15 June 2015 20:04 (ten years ago)

hugs to you, E. Vent away, it is important and healthy!

this may be tmi to ask but is stool transplant a possibility? Not sure if that is done for IBS but some GI docs I worked with at the hospital love it for ulcerative colitis and crohn's.

(not at all my intention to be all "oooooh you should try THIS it helped my best friend's cousin's daughter." That is soooo annoying to do to people who are ill! I guess I'm just into stool transplants? IDK I just hope you get some relief soon)

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Monday, 15 June 2015 20:09 (ten years ago)

Yeah I'm trying that more too and if that doesn't work then when I go back to the GI doc in six weeks we're going to try a recently approved drug for my type of IBS. I almost feel silly because it doesn't seem like a big deal but i feel sick pretty much every day and it just sucks and, yeah IO, it's really depressing. Oh, you're all so nice.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 15 June 2015 20:11 (ten years ago)

x-post - isn't that so interesting? That they can even do that. I don't think I'm quite at that level or if they'd even do it for what I have since it's mostly stress related. I'm sure that eventually i'll figure out something that works but for now it kinda sucks. I even skipped an outdoor britpop dance night on Saturday because I felt too bad! O_O ;)

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 15 June 2015 20:15 (ten years ago)

It is a huge deal! I'm trying to think of a deal that be huger than feeling awful all of the time? I dunno I think it part of how women are socialized, just trying to minimize our discomfort and downplaying how important it is.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Monday, 15 June 2015 20:17 (ten years ago)

Yeah from two minutes of education about stool transplants, my take-home message was that it is basically probiotic therapy administered from the other end! Which makes perfect sense, actually!

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Monday, 15 June 2015 20:19 (ten years ago)

I've had a lot of respiratory issues in the last couple years: some kind of infection that developed into pneumonia last July, then a month-long bout of strep-ish in November, and now another five-week on/off throat infection. I've had some blood work and throat swabs done, and AFAIK no smoking gun. I guess I should go to an ENT now?

from batman to balloon dog (carl agatha), Thursday, 23 July 2015 02:13 (ten years ago)

Much luck. Presumably you're already on prednisone and Remicade/Humira. Some friends on other forums with autoimmune disorders swear by the anti-TNF-α biologics. Some of the usual dietary means of suppressing inflammatory response seem to have benefits in model organisms: supplemental fish oil/EPA (and presumably reducing the opposing, proinflammatory arachidonic acid), dark greens/lutein, purple cabbage/berries/anthocyanins, and resveratrol.

I suspect he'll put me on some type of oral meds.
