Because I'm really, really feeling punct at the moment, so so great! Totally the first game I've been willing to put up with horrible turn/email-based servers to play online since I first found hex. I'm trying to play more Abalone and Tigris too - I played shadow of the emperor for the first time today and lost horribly and didn't really enjoy it, but I want to play it again now. Games!

What are you playing?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 3 February 2006 01:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Half my friends swear by Carcasonne.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 February 2006 01:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Finally got Princes of Florence, and my friend got Ticket To Ride: Europe, and they are both great. I'm thinking of getting Modern Art or Power Grid or possibly T&E next.

Carcasonne is fine. I dunno. It's nice enough, a bit Zen.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 3 February 2006 01:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Greg, do you have a whole profile on BGG? Mine is "cafard". I haven't updated it in a while, though.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 3 February 2006 01:47 (eighteen years ago) link

I love Carcassonne. Love it. We just got the river 2 expansion!

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 3 February 2006 01:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Truth be told, I'm sort of a bad sport since I almost ALWAYS lose, but I still enjoy it. We have this crazy laser game called Deflexion too that involves mirrors and lasers and pharoahs. I'm not very good at that one either.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 3 February 2006 01:55 (eighteen years ago) link

wait, are you talking about board games that are played on , you know, cardboard?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 3 February 2006 01:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Uh, yes.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 3 February 2006 02:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually PÜNCT might be on something other than cardboard, but there's no need to be pedantic.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 3 February 2006 02:13 (eighteen years ago) link

i just finished an email scrabble game today on a site called bug cafe, which is, annoyingly, buggy. my friend and i usually play on pixiepit.co.uk, but now there's a yearly fee. i'd love to find a decent email-based online site for scrabble, but i might just have to cough up the fee.

carcassonne is great, as is settlers of catan, which i play lots online (http://catan.jsettlers.org/index.html--not buggy like it used to be!).

i play this occasionally too: http://www.blokus.com/index.htm ...cool spatial stuff. there's a similar game that i've played irl that's like it but 3d which is great but totally hurts my brane.

links to addictive board games that can be played online, please! i always need new addictions.

Juulia (julesbdules), Friday, 3 February 2006 03:25 (eighteen years ago) link

oh, well it sounded like people we're talking about online games.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Friday, 3 February 2006 03:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, many board games have been translated into online versions. Some are easier to do this with than others. There's a whole website called Brettspielwelt (?) which has realtime versions of dozens of interesting board games, but I've always found it complicated and intimidating to interface with.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 3 February 2006 06:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I like go, but dont play it often as I'm shite. I occasionally have a crack at Triv and Scrabble and Pictionary if enough people are over (great fun when yr drunk!).

One board game I liked a lot but is apparently hard to buy new now is RoboRally. Is it true you can't buy it anymore?

http://www.brettspielwelt.info/ is the one with pretty much every nu-school boardgame ever, though I agree with chris that it's kinda daunting sometimes. You might like Puerto Rico J?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 3 February 2006 09:58 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm a member there, but haven't found the time to play since I joined.

Main interests there is Carcassonne, perhaps predictably. I managed to get the PC edition cheap on ebay so I can hone my skills against the AI before playing with people I don't know (and the inevitable pwnage).

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I just can't imagine pwnage as being part of the Carcassonne scene.

Big Boggle is like regular Boggle but with 5x5.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, thanks for the Blokus online tip. I crushed the computer AI, though. Now I want this game more than ever.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Boggle is another game scrabble practice kinda ruins :(

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:47 (eighteen years ago) link

I second the recommendation of Blokus. Highly addictive.

darin (darin), Friday, 3 February 2006 21:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I too have been addicted to Blokus lately, after a friend received a copy for Christmas. It's one of the first games I've played in a while that has remarkably simple rules yet the strategy is still there. I also purchased a copy of Carcassonne: The City recently - the game (and pieces!) are lovely.

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Friday, 3 February 2006 22:10 (eighteen years ago) link

It took a long time for me to stop being addicted to Shadows over Camelot - http://www.shadowsovercamelot.com

About Scrabble practice ruining Big Boggle, I have to comment that I dominate by going for the big eight letter words and completely neglecting the tiny ones. So I think memorizing obscure combinations of two or three letters isn't essential to Boggle the way it is to Scrabble, given the point distribution. Geekiness!!!

richardk (Richard K), Sunday, 5 February 2006 01:20 (eighteen years ago) link

If it were just the 2s and 3s then Scrabbler's Disease wouldn't be such an issue -- really it's the fact that you then go on to memorize 4s and 5s, and the NESTLE (or whatever it is) words...

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 5 February 2006 01:35 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm thinking of getting Modern Art or Power Grid or possibly T&E next.
Modern Art and Power Grid are both fantastic. I think T&E sucks, but everybody else seems to love it. That said, I also hate Ticket to Ride.

One board game I liked a lot but is apparently hard to buy new now is RoboRally. Is it true you can't buy it anymore?
RoboRally went out of print, but I believe that a new edition of it just came out.

The Yellow Kid, Sunday, 5 February 2006 06:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, Knizia is easily my favorite designer, even though I haven't played most of his big works. So I do need to get T&E at some point.

Ticket To Ride is very, very light (and isn't it one of those games where the 2nd version, Europe, fixed some problems in the first?) but it's certainly fun enough.

A friend of mine just bought Lord of the Rings Risk. After making fun of him and the game itself for a bit, as I believe is required in the rules, we decided to play later this week. Sweet.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 03:46 (eighteen years ago) link

What's the best Risk or Risk-like game? Classic Risk doesn't have enough strategy in it; once you get into the high numbers of reinforcements it's practically just luck how the game ends.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 03:53 (eighteen years ago) link

LotR Risk looks pretty complex. Will have to report back.

I've played Risk of the Future. Oh, which the internet tells me is actually called Risk 2210. It's a bit more "fun" than classic Risk - you get to conquer the ocean! And the moon!

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 03:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm told that Risk 2210 (is that it? some number like that) is the funnest variant on Risk, but... there are surely better games out there.

But I actually haven't played that many "conquer the world" type games. I'm sure there's a relevant GeekList on BGG.

Arkham Horror is neat, but has some bits that are way too fiddly.

Also, I was disappointed by a bit of the tone; i know the grim somber mood is pretty solid with Lovecraft, but there's something about it where they need just a bit more of a dry sense of humor. This is a problem i have with horror anyway, that playing it completely straight w/ no wit tends to bore me.

Spectral Rails looks like a neat idea, that of a spooky old west railroad game.

kingfish, Monday, 23 April 2007 22:37 (seventeen years ago) link

i have been playing SO MUCH settlers of catan--i'm tempted to look into seafarers/knights/5-6 player expansion. are they worth it?

I love the Seafarers expansion - pretty basic add-ons, but we tend to play the layouts where the tiles are distributed upside down, so you get a new board each time. We have the Knights expansion and haven't played it much but family members love it. G loves the Starfarers (it's a stand-alone) of Catan, but I think it's kind of dreary for multiple games. (On the other hand, the two-player version of Starfarers isn't too bad.)

We also play a lot of Puerto Rico (don't know why we love it, but we do).

We go through stages where we also play a lot of Acquire and also Evo: The Last Gasp of the Dinosaurs (the former has no emotional involvement for me, not so with the latter, when I get upset over the baby dinos).

We also play a lot of the two-player games: Lost Cities (incredible - fast and excellent!), Balloon Cup (really addicting), and Caesar & Cleopatra being the most popular (outside of the more traditional Boggle and Scrabble).

MsLaura, Monday, 23 April 2007 23:08 (seventeen years ago) link

My sis is a Talisman nut and we both love CARCASONNE! (must be shouted with em-PHAR-sis). I gave her the Inns and Cathedrals expansion for her birthday. It's always played with good humour, but there is a definite undercurrent of rivalry. I think we're even on victories at the moment.

I tend to avoid Monopoly, as the last game ended in fisticuffs (not me) and a scattered board.

Trivial Pursuit is always a winner. The best answer ever was from my youngest sister when she was about 7. The question was - what travelled through Darwin at 300km/hr on Christmas Eve 1974? Her face lit up at the prospect of knowing the answer and she excitedly yelled "SANTA!". The answer was Cyclone Tracy, but we gave her the piece of pie for creativity.

Hard like armour, Monday, 23 April 2007 23:26 (seventeen years ago) link

We also play a lot of Puerto Rico (don't know why we love it, but we do).

Perhaps because it is one of the greatest games ever. (BTW, get San Juan. It is like speed PR, has a fairly different vibe to it, and does not feel like "the same game".)

Generally I'm not a huge fan of the Settlers expansions but I'm also tired of Settlers now. Otherwise I agree with MsLaura.

Casuistry, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Go, eh? I've never really learned it, but it looks like a great game, and it's played with the same board and pieces as my old fave Pente...

NB - I really suck at Chess, and my understanding is that Go is like 8 times as complex strategically.

Also, I will call it Weiqi because I have studied kungfu, not karate.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:23 (seventeen years ago) link

San Juan, eh? Thanks for the recommendation - our birthday is in a couple of weeks and I've been pondering what to get G (or what to ask for from him) - and since he plays Puerto Rico on his lunch hour (hard life, eh?), maybe San Juan'd be a good idea for him. What's the play time, generally?

MsLaura, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 06:21 (seventeen years ago) link

30 minutes? It's a card game. Puerto Rico seems long to play on one's lunch hour! (Unless you're online, which I hear is very very fast.) But San Juan should be totally doable.

Casuistry, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 06:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, I loved Talisman as a kid. I haven't played it since and would like to very much. October is exciting! I hope they don't mess up the art.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 11:59 (fifteen years ago) link

I miss playing Settlers of Catan.
Also, Cranium, but mostly for the blue cards that made you draw things with your eyes closed or build stuff out of clay that went moldy after a couple years.
Also, Poleconomy, because it's horribly designed so there's no way everyone playing doesn't become a millionaire, even/especially during inflation. It was probably a neo-con invention meant to bring all the fun of uncapped capitalism to the family board game, but as it's the most boring premise for a game ever (think Monopoly without any sense of charity, community chest, or housing) I doubt any little kids were ever converted.

seven months pass...

Thanks to a random Berkeley dude liquidating his massive game collection at fire sale prices my gaming shelf is well stock for the coming winter months. Some favorites and recommendations for your game nights.

Pandemic. Four player cooperative disease eradication. It's you (and bros) vs the board. The board wins about 60% of the time. Tense and easy to teach. If you have kids there is a similar but slightly lighter game called Forbidden Island.

Dominion. A non collectible card game where all players are building their decks in real time from a shared pool of 10 kingdom cards. No two games are ever alike thanks to a randomizer deck that changes the kingdom card lineup.

Dixit. A surrealist visual improvement of Apples to Apples. Won a "game of the year" award in Germany which is kinda a big deal. Players take turns telling a story then laying down an image from their hand. Each other player selects an image from their hand that matches the story. Everyone guesses which is the storyteller's card. You have to be vague and clever but not overly so.

Anyone else have any recommendations?

The Macallan 18 Year, Wednesday, 28 July 2010 17:03 (thirteen years ago) link

I like those 3 games. Panademic seems a bit less strategic but then again that can be a good for some groups of people (like a group with lots of BGG newbs).

Off the top of my head I'd suggest Bang the Bullet. It can be very random (low strategy) but it is very fun, especially with a large group.

A bunch of Euro strategy games that are in the top 100 games list on BoardGameGeek.com are fun (browse all games and the list should come up).

RoboRally is a really solid game

bf and i tried it once & thought it was p boring? seemed to take 4ever... but also we are really bad about not reading the rules properly and all at once, so end up wasting a lot of time arguing over the rules later, while playing.

TEEN LESBIAN (Lamp), Thursday, 29 July 2010 04:57 (thirteen years ago) link

I agree with you about Pandemic, sometimes it feels more like group puzzle solving than game playing. I try to stress to new players that you should take YOUR turn and only give advice when asked. Don't be a butt-in-ski. My advice is rarely heeded.

More gamez...

Arkham Horror Another coop game, this one set in the Lovecraft Cthulhu universe. You play investigators attempting to seal otherworldly portals before the great old one (end boss) is awakened. Great theme, kinda fiddly, and plays up to 8 people (about 1 hour per player :( )

Carson City Very strategic game where you place cowboy workers on the board to build the town of Carson City. Unlike other WP games like Caylus or Stone Age spots on the board can be dueled for, creating a lot of player interaction and fun. This is probably my favorite game right now.

The Macallan 18 Year, Thursday, 29 July 2010 16:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Had a meeting in Santa Cruz yesterday and stopped by Game-A-Lot afterward. Clerk mentioned they just got in two copies of Settlers of America: Trails to Rails, one went on hold and they had the other for sale. The "cult of the new" kicked in and I impulsively bought it.

Later that night I brought it to the table for a four player game. The "Settlers meets Ticket To Ride" label doesn't really fit. It's more of a medium-light pick up and deliver game with a Catan backbone. Trading and player interaction are minimized by gold and 3:1 bank trading. The upside to this is swings in dice rolls are definitely minimized. I need a few more plays of this to figure out how much I like it. Probably should have played before I bought it but such is life!

The Macallan 18 Year, Monday, 2 August 2010 16:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I like Stone Age, but I'm not sure how good it is with two players. I think maybe Dominion would be your best bet out of that bunch if you're planning on playing a lot of two player games, but I haven't played Fresco or Zombie State.

You can play Dominion online at http://dominion.isotropic.org/ if you really want to try it out.

five months pass...

I don't know with board games thread we're supposed to post on these days.

I was thinking about why I'd soured so hard on Arkham, and realised that the expansions had driven a wedge between what was fun to do (complete your personal missions, pick a random investigator, role play, join Silver Twilight or the Black Goat, explore new locations, introduce new players) and what gave you any hope of victory - the last few games we played just felt like such a chore, like work.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Tuesday, 31 May 2011 10:45 (twelve years ago) link

I was reading recently about a co-op called something like SPACE ATTACK in which there was a strict timer for each individual player to get their move in or pass, so as to cut down on the solitaire-by-committee aspect...

Some people love Race for the Galaxy - to me it's just not intuitive enough: good strategy requires too much mathy counting in your head.

Arkham Horror is wonderful - but silly. Helps to have someone who really knows the game running the show.

sean gramophone, Friday, 9 September 2011 18:57 (twelve years ago) link

Arkham horror - the major things that I have seen new players having trouble with are:

1) Combat. It's tricky to remember what all the icons mean, and what order things happen, especially if the player fails to kill on their swing. Possible confusions: there's no second horror check, monster heals fully each round, player can attack again or flee but exhausted equipment/spells remain exhausted, Resistances/Immunities do not apply to basic damage from Fight.

It might be worth going through some trial combats for each player before the game starts, both to ensure everyone gets it, and to help people be realistic about what they can and can't kill.

2) Turn order. Mythos happens at the end of the turn, even though it feels like the beginning. Someone needs to be absolutely on top of the cycle of upkeep-movement-ark enc-oth world enc-mythos, and ensure it's kept to. You *do* get an Other World Encounter the turn you enter a gate, *unless* it opens on your head.

3) "Exhaust" - this is probably easier for your players if they're experienced and you can just say that it means "tap", rather than discard.

4) Monster limit, terror, and the outskirts. This is fine if you have an experienced player, but if not, someone needs to make this their job and do it well, so that everyone else can safely ignore it.

Some other common misconceptions it might be worth clearing up before starting play are: closing vs sealing gates, how focus works, the difference between fight checks and combat checks and sneak vs evade.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Saturday, 10 September 2011 00:26 (twelve years ago) link

It's a good game (maybe a great game!) but the expansions ruin it - one is okay, any more than that and it becomes far different and worse.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Saturday, 10 September 2011 00:27 (twelve years ago) link

yeah one of the mistakes i think we made is in ~always~ playing with an expansion (dunwich iirc) which just makes the game both too long and too complex to get right away.

like i think we keep getting one vital think wrong each time, like whether you can seal a gate as soon as you return through it or have to wait a turn or the effects of some of the mythos cards, making sure everyone is adjusting their stats at the correct time &c &c

my relatively new roommate is a big board game fan and we play pretty often.

sean gramophone didn't them, i guess, i guess, but we're big fans of power grid, race for the galaxy AND 7 wonders. 7 wonders in particular is good fun because you can play in only 30 minutes or so (good for super cool guys like me who need to finish the game so they can make some fucking animated gifs). besides that, we also play

dominion
pandemic
merchants and marauders
tigris & euphrates

there's a new one we're getting in the mail in a month or two. apparently it's one of the top-rated games on boardgamegeek, but it's been out of print for some time. the reprint should be complete soon. it's called Twilight Struggle, and it's about the COLD WAR, YESSSSS

just spent a couple weeks playing tons of dominion, reallly fun at first but i think you need the expansion packs--Jeff was saying upthread that he hates settlers because of the trading but, jeez, thats the best part of the game; unless you have attack cards in dominion there's almost no player-to-player interaction which makes the game super boring and not a fun social activity that ends in hurt feelings and spilled wine

It's honestly a big problem with AH that after a while it gets far too easy!

Citadels was fun but it takes at least 3 players. Four is probably better.

Sentinels of the Multi-Verse (cooperative deck game, very unbalanced in the first edition, but they just finished kickstarting a revision that will address a lot of the problems)
Puzzle Strike (interesting disc-based variation on Dominion/Nightfall)
Quarriors! Quarmageddon (expansion set, fixes some of the problems with previous versions, plus nifty box!)
Survive: Escape from Atlantis (very silly competitive game, reissue of a classic title)

Games I've played that I'm unsure about:
Infiltration (kind of like Dungeon Quest, although cyberpunk themed, which I like, but something seems off about it – I'm also not a fan of games were you "preprogram" your moves)

Games I've played I don't like: Ruses and Bruises (probably because I lost, but it just seemed very easy to fall far behind and not have any fun)

This game called ECLIPSE is pretty wonderful. Really beautifully designed euro-feeling space epic, just the right length, with gorgeous art. Like a more elegant (compact) take on Twilight Imperium or Rex, and even a little reminiscent of Cosmic Encounter (but much more cerebral).

skrill xx (cozen), Saturday, 21 July 2012 14:43 (eleven years ago) link

Eclipse isn't complicated, from a broader boardgame perspective - simpler than Caylus or Age of Industry, I'd say, and nothing like a wargame, Arkham or Twilight Imperium. Maybe on par with Power Grid? (but more fun!) There are lots of components but they come together very elegantly, rather than piles of cruft; I've played two games, and in both games the first-time players were basically fully bossin' by the halfway point.

anyone tried the 2012 SdJ, kingdom builder?

skrill xx (cozen), Sunday, 29 July 2012 22:09 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, it's fun. There are randomized win conditions and bonus tokens, so you need to use a different strategy every game. It is one of those games where a player can get a decisive lead in the first two rounds and then it becomes a race for second, though.

Hamster of Legend (J3ff T.), Sunday, 29 July 2012 22:11 (eleven years ago) link

Or maybe I'm just bitter because that's what happened the last time I played, ha ha. For the most part, it is very well balanced, and you can catch up if you play well. As with any of these games, though, luck plays a part.

Hamster of Legend (J3ff T.), Sunday, 29 July 2012 22:16 (eleven years ago) link

I own Kingdom Builder! It happens to be designed by Donald X. Vaccarino, the creator of Dominion. I like it a lot. It does definitely have the potential for someone to get a serious advantage in the first couple of turns, but that can be related to everyone being inexperienced. After a couple plays it becomes more clear what the relative strengths of the special powers are and how important it is to claim them and use them as quickly as possible.

where can i get a mcdonalds quesadilla tho (silby), Monday, 30 July 2012 00:29 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, last time we were playing with the expansion, which adds a couple really crazy new powers (like one that allows you to place "rocks" on the board back in block off your settlements, which is super useful but whose utility I didn't realize until it was too late) and a new mechanic with one time use powers. Still, the guy in the lead lucked out with his first couple territory cards and so he was able to get a bunch of special powers, while another guy kept getting caught in one little corner and wasn't able to get any of the powers.

Gauntlet of Fools is a fun little game by Donald X. that is also very fast, once you know how to play you can probably play twice in 30 minutes.

Have I talked in this thread about how I can't stand playing Arkham Horror? It might just be the group that I've played it with, but man I find it just overwhelmingly boring.

wongo hulkington's jade palace late night buffet (silby), Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:33 (eleven years ago) link

i have a responsibility-free day so i'm playing by myself with three characters, i've played six or seven full turns so far over the course of two hours. right now my positions is nailbitingly tense - a shoggoth in the outskirts, two monsters on each gate, including a starspawn. there's also a wandering dhole in there. on the other hand, everyone has blessings and harvey walters has a magic lamp that's like +5 to combat. basically i have everyone in position to close the three open gates and everyone is buffed so i'm either about to be in position to close all the open gates at once - though a new one will definitely spawn - or i'm about to get my ass handed to me. this is alternately boring and awesome.

the late great, Wednesday, 19 December 2012 22:01 (eleven years ago) link

the dhole ate ashcan pete's dog though which kind of sucks because he's short in the sanity dept anyway

i would take the researcher and pete to church first but that would be two more gates to make six total by the time mandy and pete can get to any open gates.

I played a By Forum game on BGG the other week and it actually works pretty well.

(Short version - we were playing vs Abthoth, looked like a lost cause as the Doom Track had shot up really quickly. Then for two turns gates started opening on players and they got spat out early which means we sealed something like 3 in two turns and then had another stroke of luck as two turns on the trot the new gate opened on the location of the existing, keeping the doom track stalled. Then one player through, Find Gate, Elder Sign, done.

My highlight was not once, but twice, sneaking through a pack of three monsters which included a ghost both times. They're -2 and we had -1 environment as well.)

Yeah, I observed the real life version once and it seemed like a ton of work to actually make it work. If you're still curious, you should check out the online version. It's pay to play (you purchase tokens), but they give you a bunch of free tokens to get you hooked at first, and if you're like me, you'll get enough enjoyment out of those 15 or so games that you'll never want to play again anyway.

"reading specialist" (Z S), Thursday, 3 January 2013 20:18 (eleven years ago) link

Two "adventurers breaking into the pyramid" themed games I played over the holidays:

The Adventurers: The Pyramid of Horus is pretty sweet - you have reasonable incentives both to linger and hope for a bigger haul of treasure, or to hurry back out since each round another cube of stone "falls" from the ceiling, potentially sealing you in forever. Also a nice mechanic where damage, inventory slots, and how much you can do per turn are all linked together so you don't have to keep track of them separately. Makes it really clear that, okay, it might be worth it to open this treasure chest, but it'll slow me down next turn when I need to dodge out of the way of the mummy. Pretty cool. Only thing that sucked was the cards were badly shuffled so on my first turn I ended up getting a whole spree of injuries and was sort of hobbled for the rest of the game. But cool.

Escape: The Curse of the Temple is a somewhat gimmicky high-speed cooperative game where everybody is trying to escape the temple by making the correct dice rolls, while a CD soundtrack raises the tension and bangs gongs when it's too late. Cute enough, though kind of just a bunch of chaos going on. Would be pretty sweet for a twelve-year-old's birthday party if everybody's patient enough to get the mechanics of it down (and not cheat).

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 10 January 2013 13:22 (eleven years ago) link

My group's latest obsession is Galaxy Trucker, where you first race to assemble a space rig, grabbing parts from the center before your opponents can get them, and then watch your ship slowly get destroyed by asteroids and pirates. There's a good amount of luck but this is one of the few games I can think of where losing might be more fun than winning.

Kingdom Builder was really interesting the couple times I played, and my friend picked it up for Xmas, so we should be playing that one some more soon.

Vinnie, Thursday, 10 January 2013 14:14 (eleven years ago) link

That Pyramid of Horus game looks pretty good, and I was vaguely looking at Galaxy Trucker in the shop about an hour ago, but I'm currently on a self-imposed ban after having picked up a pile of clearance deals at boardgameguru over Christmas. When I say a pile I mean a pile too - Road To Canterbury, Shipyard, London, Tinners Trail, Upon The Salty Ocean, Pergamon, Heavens of Olympus, Industry, Singapore, Power Grid Factory Manager and Forgotten Planet for CHEAP.

This place opened near me recently called the Edinburgh Game Hub. Basically some guy bought a cafe with a huge 'basement' area that he transformed into rooms for wargaming and board gaming. They have over 200 board games apparently. Spent some time there last week and played Zombicide (which is pretty good, albeit all-too-often vague about specifics of rules), tried out 7 Wonders (I have no idea what is going in this game) and some quick Japanese (though possibly just "Japanese" rather than authentic) tile game. I expect I'll be more of a board game geek as time goes on.

played pandemic for the first time this weekend. rented from a board game shop, played about five times the first night and three times last night. super-fun, nail-bitingly tense, though extremely difficult to win in our experience (we only won once out of about ten games). perhaps we're doing something incorrectly. really liked how it had the feel of watching disease outbreaks spread across the world.

also played cosmic encounter for the first time. it was fun but i think it lacked some sci-fi flavor. a lot of the game felt very generic - spaceships might as well have been poker chips and different attacks might as well have been uno cards. still, i liked the negotiation element a lot (even though nobody i was playing with ever really wanted to negotiate) and i liked the open-endedness and simplicity of the game.

the late great, Monday, 21 January 2013 01:58 (eleven years ago) link

I've played Cosmic a few times and I keep thinking that there's a pretty rad game there but I haven't found it yet. Game always seems to end before anything particularly tricksy can happen with the special powers and flares.

(panda) (gun) (wrapped gift) (silby), Monday, 21 January 2013 02:25 (eleven years ago) link

How many people are you playing Cosmic with? It's pretty weak with 3 or 4.

It's really at its best with 5 - you REALLY want time for people's crazy abilities to come out, people to fuck over eachother with flares etc. Make sure you remember that flares stay in your hand after use!

It's a silly and crazy imbalanced game but can be very fun.

Moodles, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 22:27 (eleven years ago) link

It's way more Dominion than M:TG. Think of a game of Dominion where you can potentially buy any card from any of the expansions but only six random cards are available each turn. I don't like it as much, but I do find it fun to play once in a while. There's a little more player interaction which is nice. I guess the flavor is close to M:TG.

I played the new Netrunner once, but was very into the original game from the 90's. It seems like they kept the concept and gameplay very similar but the cards are different. Which is good - the one knock I had on the original game was that it was a bit unbalanced in favor of the corporation. If they've rebalanced the cards, that would make the game great.

Let me second the love for Love Letter, that's a game we've been playing a lot lately. Really simple game, almost no strategy, but surprisingly fun all the same.

the one knock I had on the original game was that it was a bit unbalanced in favor of the corporation. If they've rebalanced the cards, that would make the game great.

i was talking to a friend the other day who has played the new version. he said that there's a way to play online, and it keeps overall stats of the results of each game, and apparently 51% of all games have been won by the corp (or 49%, can't remember)

Lamp, Monday, 13 May 2013 19:58 (ten years ago) link

I remember the original as being corp-advantaging too, but I wander if that was a result of my misguided-to-nonexistent deckbuilding thought at age like 11, and in fact the runner was just always meant to be running four copies of Mouse or whatever. I guess in any case a fixed-deck variant solves that problem.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 10:28 (ten years ago) link

a few board games on the app store are on sale - ra, tiger&euphrates, le havre. they're all under a buck. any thoughts about these games?

Jibe, Thursday, 16 May 2013 06:47 (ten years ago) link

I bought all four for going on holiday because of the pricing. We probably played Medici more than any of the rest, a great little filler game. Ra is very much in the same boat, although if you're playing solo against the AI it's very slow because it still 'thinks' about every move.

Le Havre looked good when I ran through the tutorial but it seems to be one of those games where you have to remember what the bonuses for a lot of different buildings are, so I reckon it's a good implementation for people who already know how to play it but I never got in the mood to play it.

Played through the tutorial for Tigris & Euphrates, didn't like it. Area control game where you use war as a destabilising technique on other areas, but with an odd scoring mechanism where you notionally have points but don't get them until you do something else and sometimes you score them, sometimes not. I might have another go and see if I enjoy it more.

Tikal was cheap for a while too, and that's definitely worth it.

Troughton-masked Replicant (aldo), Thursday, 16 May 2013 06:57 (ten years ago) link

I've played tabletop Le Havre and it is a mathy BEAR, one of the grindiest and least satisfying games I've played. If you did memorize what all the cards did there could be some satisfaction in implementing the most optimal strategy available in any given move but it's definitely a game won on predicting that getting the Drying Shed now means an extra 2 points three turns from now versus putting your chips on the Barrel Distributor or whatever. And you don't have enough turns, or moves per turn, to just screw all that and play it in a loose fun family way where you're just tinkering with your little sea port. Dud for me.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 16 May 2013 13:50 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, ran through it again after i posted above and you have to remember what all the buildings do otherwise your opponents (if they're the AI) just go on a route to get the luxury liner as soon as it's available and you can't play against it. Then they do things like build the Seine Bridge, which it doesn't show you on the tutorial and is introduced in the "simple version, without the difficult cards". It's a dud for me too.

Troughton-masked Replicant (aldo), Thursday, 16 May 2013 14:28 (ten years ago) link

Also the cards are tiny so you can't see what the activation costs are, or even what buildings your opponents have. I knew one of them had the abattoir and it took me about a minute to work out which of the two of them had it.

caek, Thursday, 16 May 2013 20:42 (ten years ago) link

so i played a few games of citadel this week - it was very easy to pickup, quick moving and fun.

i also played 2 games of netrunner. the first game i was the runner and i hit a basically unprotected R&D early on for like 4 points early on w/ a maker's eye. it went so quick that i couldn't really get much out of the game except for very basic principles (we're trying to teach ourselves the rules). the second game i was the corporation and it felt very unbalanced against the runner. at some point i had my R&D and HQ protected by two decent ice each, and i had made a remote server w/ 3 very good ice that i just kept cycling agendas into and advancing/scoring every two turns. at that point was there anything a more experienced runner could have done, or if the runner doesn't move quickly enough and lets the corporation build up big defenses is he pretty much screwed? did i play the rules wrong by accident? one thing we noted after the game is that the runner relied heavily on crypsis which meant he basically never had money and couldn't put serious runs together (he settled for taking big shots w/ maker's eye at my HQ to try and luck into some agendas - but came out w/ nothing twice).

That's exactly how I remember the old game playing out, Mordy. If the runner didn't get a good early start (and some luck), they were locked out. Every ice the corp builds makes it harder for the runner, but the corp only has to activate an ice once, whereas the runner pays every time they go through. I should check out some pro-level games of this, I always got the feeling we were playing it wrong too.

So a few mates and I have been playing board games together every month - http://sickmouthy.com/2013/05/01/what-i-alk-about-when-i-talk-about-board-games/ - and I've bought Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne, and now I fancy buying something else.

I've seen Alien Frontiers, Power Grid, and Puerto Rico mentioned and they all look like good bets. NetRunner is entirely bard based isn't it? I think I'm mostly interested in simple-to-pick-up (in terms of rules) stuff that can have relatively sophisticated tactics and doesn't require huge memory skills (Small World has way too many variations of races to figure out how to use them properly, for instance), and stuff that's either for 2 or 4 players (ideally both, and possibly expandable to 6, too).

Any suggestions?

I'm don't have the expertise of most in this thread, but King of Tokyo is a safe bet. 2-6 players, very easy, very fun and addictive (though maybe not as involved as the two games you mention).

We have started playing Labyrinth and it is basically brain-consuming AND SUPER FUN. I am representing the Jihadists and Thnig is the US. So far we have played through two turns (two rounds of cards) and after an immersive weekend, I think we're getting the hang of it a little better. It's MUCH MUCH more serious than any game I've ever played before, totally love that. I've got troops in a variety of places, but my plots have all failed. The US can't seem to withdraw from Afghanistan until the posture returns to soft. I only with there were an expansion that would allow the US to add private contractors once the troops became fatigued.

Just for the hell of it, I took a picture. I, personally, have never seen a game like this one, much less played one. The game acknowledges up front that everyone loses. It seems to be about how you play the game and who loses least. VERY appealing basic premise for me, at least.

i should mention that i saw this game when we were browsing in a store (a game geek store) and was interested because it was realistic, and seemed really dry and fair. not bloodthirsty (kill the enemy!) and 0 goofy but more complex and strategy-oriented. i've never played any games like this at all, and generally the concept of learning all about another world just to try to kill more zombies/monsters/whatever than my opponent doesn't really interest me, but when i saw that there were markers measuring both US prestige and the overall success of the GWOT (that's what we call it after a weekend of this), i was pretty convinced it would be fun. and it totally is!!

I haven't played a board game in forever. Feel like I should start again.

Jeff, Monday, 3 June 2013 14:23 (ten years ago) link

I've played more conventional card driven wargames (Hannibal vs Rome is one) where the cards have multiple uses so there's lots of decision making going on. In terms of hard core strategy games the card driven ones are my favorite type. Steep learning curve imo but it is rewarding.

lipitor retriever (brownie), Monday, 3 June 2013 14:27 (ten years ago) link

Learning curve is often a barrier for me. I prefer complex games that don't have a huge luck component. However, I hate learning games and I feel like it takes me many plays to actually get it and even longer to understand strategy. I think I'm slower than most in that regards.

Basic games are fun, but I get bored by them after a few plays.

I don't like the learning curve either! I guess I really like the idea that Labyrinth/war strategy games use stuff/terms/events I already know exist, not an imaginary world full of nouns and verbs i don't know (you have to lapiderate the ontodoctyl before you can etc). i mean, i already understand most of the implications "regime change". at least the game allows me to use that understanding. I think I'm too old to learn about the ontodoctyl.

Learning one of these games that use a card driven system really makes it easier to learn the others that interest you. A good upfront investment.

you play each. if you win both games, you win the round. if it's a split, then whoever scored the most points in their losing game wins.

We win all the time... (hope i'm not jinxing it)

The secret is to focus on curing diseases much more than anything else. (And hopefully having roles to support.)

Normally I play with 2 players though - might be harder with more?

sean gramophone, Thursday, 12 September 2013 13:44 (ten years ago) link

I don't think I've lost at Pandemic yet - I think the key is probably to get your team spread across into each disease zone and tackle them individually, even if it involves sacrificing research to travel there.

Forbidden Island is a lot more challenging imo, and can feel from the outset that you're not going to win (which makes it all the sweeter when you do).

Moodles, Thursday, 12 September 2013 14:52 (ten years ago) link

i think arkham horror is harder

Mordy , Thursday, 12 September 2013 14:55 (ten years ago) link

In my experience, the game is way harder with 4 players than with 2. At 4 players with all epidemics you can definitely get screwed over sometimes, but if you really focus on curing diseases you end up OK more often than not.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Thursday, 12 September 2013 15:11 (ten years ago) link

Arkham Horror is definitely harder.

I agree that Pandemic is counter-intuitive in that you would think that more players would cure more easily but the number of epidemics plus the combination of putting the already infected cities back on top and the outbreak mechanic mean it's much more difficult to win.

Ian Glasper's trapped in a scone (aldo), Thursday, 12 September 2013 15:33 (ten years ago) link

Drum Roll is the most fun game I've played recently, but Tammany Hall (or at least the new edition) is game of the year, for sure.

Mordy , Friday, 13 September 2013 20:10 (ten years ago) link

I really like Race for the Galaxy but it's one of those games where I wish there were less cards. I don't play it often so I end up having to do a lot of reading during the game. Then again I play MTG which is far, far worse about that. I like Dominion's model of playing with a limited set of cards each game, it's a good way to make new cards but reduce the complexity of a given game.

Vinnie, Friday, 13 September 2013 20:12 (ten years ago) link

The Resistance is a more fun Mafia. People don't die so no one is ever sitting around waiting for the next game. Also there's is more opportunity to learn people's identities through playing the game rather than blind accusation. It's a lot of fun with the right group.

Been playing Cosmic Encounter a lot recently.

It's a silly and crazy imbalanced game but can be very fun.

This is pretty OTM. Like you can be building a tactic and reserving some kick arse attacks for a big push, then some bonkers card comes up which completely disrupts the status quo and you're back to square one. There's still skill involved, but it's more reacting to the situations that arise rather than trying to build a coherent strategy, which will almost inevitably end in frustration.

It's a good laugh though, and pretty easy for anyone to pick up. I like the slight pokerish/psycological element of selecting your encounter cards.

I have the Dragon Games box set and I stupidly left my original copy of Emperor's Treasure with a friend when I moved ages ago. I miss that color version of the map so much, the box set version is so dead. Been trying to find a copy of Dragon #51 online with the map intact but no luck.

Ascension is great fun on iPad, but a lousy real-life card game - too much futzing around and shuffling.

Yeah, It Never Snows was utterly insane. Not just in scope but in density. This is the best close-up I have of one of the battles, but it got a lot crazier than this.

Ornate Coleman (Moodles), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 20:02 (ten years ago) link

Having played both Dominion as an app and irl, I actually prefer irl despite all the shuffling. It's just easier to follow the mechanics when card effects don't all happen automatically.

Ornate Coleman (Moodles), Wednesday, 18 December 2013 20:03 (ten years ago) link

I prefer in-person to online too cause it's more fun hanging out with people and I like holding real cards (very old man of me), but the amount of shuffling in Dominion and Ascension sucks. Online games take about a third as much time, maybe even less when you factor setup.

arkham horror is kinda a really bad game but a fun experience - it is designed to be obtuse + confusing + byzantine as a kinda ludic reflection of the genre. it's like a non-game for gamers. catan is a game for non-gamers. i think you made the right choice.

No - it's an area control game on a map of medieval Spain... you're trying to maintain control of territory while bidding each turn on a supply of special action cards (IIRC). I've played it once or twice and remember it being enjoyable.

Every holiday I get to try a smattering of games that my family's been exposed to over the year, plus some more with the local gamer group (super nice people). Today's experiences:

Mystery of the Abbey: Clue/Guess Who-esque deduction game, with a Name of the Rose knockoff plotline. Some cool ideas in play, but it was really hard to get a feel for how you should play, or how the questions you can ask other people about their hands can really help you. Also just kind of sluggish since you get very few movements and the board has needless filler squares just to annoy you. Meh.

Vegas: Very fun and pacey little dice game, with not-uninteresting decisions for you to make. Great light starter/finisher type game, IMO - not too brain intensive and you always have something to do, but you don't feel like it's just total luck.

Chinatown: Real estate thing in John Lindsay's New York... you collect pieces of property as well as businesses you can open on them, goal is to build sets of the same business next to each other. The cool thing is that there's an open wheel-and-deal round after you draw your cards for the turn, and you can make any kind of cockamamie trade you want ("I'll trade you space 45 for a seafood restaurant, *IF* you promise that the next time you draw a camera store, you give it to me"). I worry a bit about the theme, and the trading gets out of whack if you get too far behind everybody (so that you can offer them a game-winning piece and all they can offer you is something kind of vaguely helpful). But the trading dynamic makes it pretty social, that's cool. This is the second time I've played - pretty sure I did way better last time and therefore didn't get bugged about the above.

i always find it weird that people find arkham horror confusing but maybe my perspective is skewed since i grew up playing warhammer 40k and many very grindy paper-and-pencil RPGs

the late great, Thursday, 26 December 2013 20:30 (ten years ago) link

warhammer is more of a lifestyle game imo; maybe Arkham scales up nicely the more you play it but between the set up time, the rule book consulting etc I never played it often enough to have a real strategic grasp on the mechanics of gameplay

Christmas board games played this year: Settlers of Catan (for the first time ever! It was great fun) and King of Tokyo (also first time, also fairly fun, though I didn't feel like the cards really added too much to the game).

emil.y, Saturday, 28 December 2013 03:30 (ten years ago) link

At Sean's recommendation I bought Power Grid for my brothers and we played it a tonne on 25 and 26th. The rules are tricky, there's a lot of shifting around of player order and exclusion of regions on the board and thing, plus a lot of math at the end. It was great, we played five games, and it got intense. Not nearly as intense as the two hours of mahjongg I played today in stony silence tho

Settlers of Catan, IMO. Even as you're figuring out the strategy of the game itself, the trading with/backstabbing your friends is fun.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 29 January 2014 15:46 (ten years ago) link

I think Carcassonne is a good choice too. Only needs 2 players, the rules are brief and pretty easy to absorb so you can start up quickly, but there's a lot of depth to the gameplay.

Settlers is a popular entry game, but I'd also recommend Carcassonne over it. Less downtime, less complexity, less time per game, but about the same amount of strategy. Ticket to Ride is quite fun but more complex - I've had friends get thrown by that game.

Vinnie, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 15:59 (ten years ago) link

Vinnie, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 16:03 (ten years ago) link

Haha. None of my friends are into this stuff, but I could see it becoming a good pastime for weekend nights when we don't want to spend any money on going out. I think what's important is that it appeals to everyone as well as being accessible.

doglato dozzy (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 January 2014 16:06 (ten years ago) link

To expound on my "dumb" friends, I think the thing those friends sometimes don't like about Ticket or Settlers is that the complexity of the rules and actions is overwhelming for them. Sometimes they start getting antsy even as I explain the rules. I mean, fair enough, some people just aren't into those kinds of games, and as far as board games go they're not that complicated. But then, the same friends will enjoy stuff like Carcassonne because there's less rules information to explain and remember, even though the number of tricky decisions might be about the same. You can play Carcassonne with almost no thought (of course, you probably won't win), whereas with Ticket and Settlers there's more knowledge you need to know about legal moves and possible actions. I've found Carcassonne to be more universally appealing.

Vinnie, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 16:41 (ten years ago) link

It's also very placid and has lovely imagery on the tiles.

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Wednesday, 29 January 2014 16:49 (ten years ago) link

xpost

Vinnie's exactly right, it has less to do with the age of the people playing and more to do with how comfortable they are with internalizing a set of rules that can be a bit more finicky than an old school board game.

Even with Carcassonne, the rules are pretty easy but it has a scoring system that can cause some confusion at first, and if you don't internalize that scoring system you will lose.

Spaghetti Sauce Shampoo (Moodles), Wednesday, 29 January 2014 16:53 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, the farm scoring alone makes it so most newbies get creamed.

Jeff, Wednesday, 29 January 2014 17:06 (ten years ago) link

My point being that I would rather play a game with beginners where there is chance they would grasp the concept/mechanics/tactics early on instead of mindlessly playing to just play. TTR always seems to work well for that. I played it with my parents and they are not the brightest bulbs, but did well and enjoyed it.

Bizarrely, my parents (who are good with rules and card games in particular) struggled to get to grips with TtR in a way I would never have expected.

Kill Doctor Lucky is actually a pretty good entry game, it encourages thinking/planning ahead and the idea of forcing someone else to use a resource so they then can't stop you. Forbidden Island is a nice little co-op rather than jump straight into Pandemic.

I like the idea of so-called 'party' games like Dixit quite a lot because they appear to require a spot of imaginative thinking as well as strategic. How's that one?

doglato dozzy (dog latin), Friday, 31 January 2014 17:39 (ten years ago) link

I just really don't fancy Dixit at all, and/or wouldn't find anyone to play if with.

Ian Glasper's trapped in a scone (aldo), Friday, 31 January 2014 17:51 (ten years ago) link

Dixit isn't really strategic at all - in fact, it goes over well with my friends who dislike strategy games. The fun of the game varies wildly on how imaginative people want to be; I've had really good games and really boring games. Also I rarely play more than once in a row, because it's difficult to come up with fun/interesting descriptions. It's a cool game even with those caveats, would recommend.

Apples to Apples, Cards Against Humanity, Wits and Wagers, and Time's Up (aka Celebrities) are also good party games you might like, dl.

Vinnie, Friday, 31 January 2014 20:17 (ten years ago) link

doglato dozzy (dog latin), Saturday, 1 February 2014 08:38 (ten years ago) link

Cards Against Humanity is the worst - "mixer" game for freshman drama students who like showing off how 'edgy' and 'over the top' they're willing to go, but need the crutch of cards coming pre-loaded with "hilarious" "off-color" phrases. It also loses the actual humor in Apples to Apples, which emerges from an appreciation for your friends' moments of offbeat logic and surprising combinations of ideas.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 2 February 2014 02:54 (ten years ago) link

eh i think Cards still retains the offbeat logic thing sometimes. imo its major downfall is that because it trades in shock value it has super low replay value. like if "firing a shotgun while balls deep in a hog" is trying too hard the first time someone plays it, it is so incredibly tedious the second time.

een, Sunday, 2 February 2014 04:35 (ten years ago) link

there aren't really THAT many major shock value cards -- a lot of it is just slightly more adult/varied A2A. i read every one (of the initial set) on christmas cause my sister was thinking about playing with the family and i was determined to locate and remove every single card i wouldn't want to explain to my mom. still sounds like a horrible idea not sure why anyone would want to play with their parents

but yeah the cards like "firing a shotgun while balls deep in a hog" or "the taint; the grundle; the fleshy fun-bridge" are barely meant to be played, they're just meant to be read and laughed at in their own context. they'd never actually win. one thing that sort of annoys me about it.

I'll repost something I wrote about it upthread:

it's a silly and crazy imbalanced game but can be very fun.

Flux - Kind of crazy, the rules change constantly, as does the goal for winning. Pretty random and hard to strategize. Still fun.
Tsuro - A path building game. Really simple, you try and make the other dragons crash into each other or the edge of the board. Not the biggest fan.
DC Deck Building Game - First deck building game I've ever played. I enjoyed it, made me want to play others.
Power Grid - I was too drunk by this point, but I seem to recall liking it, even though I was playing very badly.

I played Betrayal at House on the Hill last weekend (and had no idea how rare and expensive it was!). It's a lot of fun, and I feel like the creators maybe should have sued the people who made Cabin in the Woods, as the general concepts are practically identical!

Khamma chameleon (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 29 May 2014 16:02 (nine years ago) link

I own it. The aesthetics are awesome and add a lot to the fun of the game. The gameplay is pretty interesting too - it's based around a mechanic of mixing and matching races and classes, so you get different experiences each time. That said, I've played about ten games and don't play it anymore. The winner almost always comes down to people playing kingmaker, and worse, sometimes players get into positions where they are losing yet the other players are incentivized to keep attacking them, which is really unfun.

I really have far too many games.

Brits of a certain age really shouldn't snooze on Tony Boydell's game of Ivor The Engine. It's a proper game and not just something for kids, plus new Firmin art just for it. Lovely.

Boydell's Snowdonia is also fun, with a lot of points trades to be worked out through progress or development.
I have got Caverna out 5 times now and still never started a game, I got completely bored with Agricola as it's just "build a food engine, grow your family" with very little variation beyond that but the scope of Caverna has scared me into putting it back each time.
Great Fire of London is a superb little pseudo-co-op with hidden victory points. The players work ostensibly together to fight the fire, but have areas they want to protect for final bonuses.
Letters from Whitechapel is a pretty good hidden movement game. A good player will pretty much always win whether he plays the ripper or the police though, and some house rules can balance it.
For people that found Arkham Horror too fiddly and tried Elder Sign because they liked dice, but found THAT too fiddly; the answer is Ancient Terrible Things. Plays like a treat and scratches exactly the same itch.
Cornish Smuggler is potentially great, although the mechanism for recruiting allies feels a bit too unbalanced.
A Study In Emerald could be a great Martin Wallace game, but I haven't played it with enough people to make the hidden victory conditions worthwhile. It's a deckbuilder at heart, but pretends not to be - unlike London, which clearly is a fun deckbuilder and none the worse for it.
Compounded is a really fun little set collection game.
Finally got around to Stone Age which seemed a little to basic of a worker placement for me these days tbh.
Unlike Viticulture, which is a great worker placement game and about to be expanded.
I finally got around to Forbidden Desert and it's much harder than Forbidden Island, it's killed us every time thus far.

Has anyone played Arkham Horror or Mansions of Madness? If so are they any good, and which is the one to get?

canoon fooder (dog latin), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 12:17 (eight years ago) link

i kind of like the idea of a horror and even open to an element of RPG, but I heard these can be a bit complicated and fiddly. We're not hardened gamers - we've played a LOT of Carcassonne with various add-ons. Interested in something a bit different, but don't want to waste money on something that isn't fun and we don't end up playing very much.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 12:25 (eight years ago) link

Mansions of Madness is great fun if played in the right spirit - everyone should be more concerned about the story and the atmosphere than winning, or the minutiae of the rules. It is indeed very fiddly though, takes roughly 45 mins just to set up! And if the GM/Keeper puts one card out of place during set up it is basically rendered unplayable.

Currently totally hooked on Dominion, and getting into Race For the Galaxy. I got Euphoria in the end, but have decided it's quite crap, despite pretty design and cool theme.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 12:30 (eight years ago) link

Arkham Horror is a good game at the heart of it, but an hour setup and a very long slow playing time is not for the faint hearted or the new. The rules aren't particularly intuitive either, so expect some headscratching and to get a lot wrong when playing. It's definitely one to be taught, and even then don't expect everything to be right. It's also got a fairly low win rate (~40%) unless you get lucky. Haven't played Mansions of Madness.

Eldritch Horror is supposed to be a better implementation of the AH gameset, with reduced setup and play times, but I haven't played it so can't directly advise. Elder Sign is a nice dice implementation of the general concept and plays really well but also (imo) has setup issues. I have A Touch Of Evil sitting in my unplayed pile, and that might scratch the same itch.

The ideal horror game, but you really need 4 to make it work, is Betrayal at House on the Hill.

I felt kind of the same about Euphoria. I had a bit more baggage as I was a KS backer, but there are some redundant choices and the game is slightly broken.

My tip of the moment is Matt Leacock's Thunderbirds game - another great co-op from him which is far stronger as a game than you'd think the franchise would allow for. Also still playing a lot of 5 Tribes, Town Center, Ancient Terrible Things (and eagerly awaiting the new expansion), Scoville and Dead Men Tell No Tales.

new Dominion expansion should be on shelves within days. Most exciting part of this one to me is the Landmarks, which provide alternate ways of earning (or losing) VP either during or at the end of the game. For example, one gives you 15 points if you have at least 10 coppers in your final deck. (And since like the Events from Adventures they're just one card you have out, you could proxy them pretty easily if you were so inclined.)

Dominion is probably my favorite game and I'm delighted Donald X. is still coming up with new ideas.

Sean, let me be clear (silby), Tuesday, 7 June 2016 16:57 (seven years ago) link

i wish i could get more into dominion. i've liked it when i've played (i have the core set and the Prosperity expansion) but something about it feels so sterile that it's kinda --yawn-- but i can see that clearly it's a super well designed game. idk what it is that i feel like it's missing.

Mordy, Tuesday, 7 June 2016 17:01 (seven years ago) link

It's sterile like a surgical instrument and I wouldn't have it otherwise tbh.

Sean, let me be clear (silby), Tuesday, 7 June 2016 17:33 (seven years ago) link

I don't find it serile, I think it's generally a real hoot - unless you have one of those really draggy kingdom card combos with hardly any plus actions or whatever.

I've been working my way through the Dominion expansions for about a year and a half now, most recently on Dark Ages, which I think is my favourite along with Prosperity and possibly Seaside. I like how each one has a different atmosphere to it as well as different mechanics.

I really need to get some kind of organiser for all my cards - it's a real pain getting them out and putting them back into the various expansion boxes.

I use the same solution Donald X does which is long cardboard trading card boxes. I got some dividers printed out too, everything is in alphabetical order and easily grabbed, it's pretty great.

Yeah I need to get something like that together.

Had a look at the new card list, some really fun ones! Though the art looks worse than usual.

my group won't play dominion anymore after someone discovered 'big money' & insists that's the only way to play and is unbeatable

p.sure that only applies for the base game but we never get the chance to try out the other expansions : /

cozen, Wednesday, 8 June 2016 17:15 (seven years ago) link

Big Money isn't unbeatable. It's just a baseline strategy all others can be measured against. You can even beat it in the base game. Try Chapel, or Market and Gardens, or Witch.

Sean, let me be clear (silby), Wednesday, 8 June 2016 17:20 (seven years ago) link

Big money is often a winning tactic, but no one in my group ever plays it cos it's really boring.

two months pass...

Race for the Galaxy has been on our shelf for about a year and I kept falling asleep reading the instructions.

Anyway, we finally started playing and it's pretty fantastic. We also just bought HIVE, which I just thought I'd mention as no one else has. It's a little rinkydink two player game, basically chess with bugs. The pieces are really well made and the game mechanics are really original and fun.

Anyway - I seek recommendations. What's else is good in a Carcassonne/Ticket to Ride kind of way? I.e. A board game rather than card game, easy to pick up, good for two players, some relatively sui generis mechanics rather than a trading/resource-developing thing.

As an aside, I just get crushed at internet backgammon by a guy in Iran. The internet is great, sometimes!

Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 4 September 2016 22:06 (seven years ago) link

Good for two players is probably the toughie there - - - I've played so much stuff that clicks into gear with three, but seems like it'd just sit there awkwardly with two people alternating. But I feel that way about Carcassonne, so if you're enjoying that, hmmm... I dunno! Just flipped through my spotty BGG reviews and the only thing jumping out at me as a 'maybe' would be Seeland, which I remember finding quite enjoyable and sort of "medium-light."

I found Troyes fun with two, but my tastes may be different than yours. (I do love "trading/resource-developing games" like Agricola.) Merchants and Marauders can be a tad complicated but is also a very fun two-player "theme" game, if you play it in the race mode.

Some favourite card-based ones for two:
+ Dominion
simpler:
+ Lost Cities
+ Coloretto
+ Bohnanza

I can't seem to get good enough at chess to relax and enjoy it. My partner's lousy too. I guess it could be worth brushing up? Also I demand a good set. It's something about feeling the ridges on the knight, the baize under the pieces, the weight of the King tipping over when I inevitably resign.

Goofy trend, but Pandemic Legacy has a lot of fans who think its the best boardgame ever for those with regular groups. Rob Daviau's third legacy game, Seafall, has had rather mixed reviews. Having a solid base game makes the difference.

is anyone interested in playing some board games on VASSAL? in particular i'd really like to play the COIN games but they require 4 ppl and it's hard to get enough ppl together irl. i was thinking of trying to get a group together and go through them in order starting with Andean Abyss: Insurgency and Counterinsurgency in Columbia. for ppl who aren't familiar with this series they are 4-player asymmetrical games. in this one players take the roles of the "Government (Govt) or 1 of 3 Insurgent Factions—the Marxist FARC, the right-wing AUC 'paramilitaries', or the narco-trafficking Cartels."

the rules for the game are here:
http://www.gmtgames.com/andeanabyss/AARules-1c.pdf

there's a youtube learn to play from the publisher here:

i mean i personally find them depressing

the late great, Saturday, 25 March 2017 22:46 (seven years ago) link

what do u feel about military games about old but real wars? like civil war games?

Mordy, Saturday, 25 March 2017 22:50 (seven years ago) link

civil war games still depressing, renaissance or medieval stuff not so much. otoh i'm okay w slaughtering 1000s of goblins in my d&d campaign and my favorite boardgame is eldritch horror so i'm not sure what my objection is.

the late great, Saturday, 25 March 2017 23:20 (seven years ago) link

i think it's fair to find occult horror or fantasy genre violence to be more palatable than simulations of actual wars where real humans killed other real humans - i was just curious if your objection was to like bleeding edge contemporary conflicts (essentially all counter-insurgency style games i guess) or to any kind of historical violence. what are your thoughts on twilight struggle which is about the cold war but more-or-less abstracts all the violence such that you're adding and removing influence points, not manipulating actual troops/regiments/armies.

Mordy, Saturday, 25 March 2017 23:27 (seven years ago) link

I can see the impulse to find it depressing, but there's the reality that people have actually lived through/are living through/trying to negotiate life in these brutal conflicts and understanding the complexities of the conflicts is educational. Playing to "win" misses the point. The game designers understand this and clearly aren't out to glorify bloodshed or violence.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Saturday, 25 March 2017 23:36 (seven years ago) link

yeah something that interests me about those games is the balance they strike in giving the players the option to pursue both violent and nonviolent strategies.

the late great, Saturday, 25 March 2017 23:48 (seven years ago) link

mordy have you ever played a board game about israel and how did that feel?

something about that screenshot reminds me of a video game i was obsessed with about 20 years ago

the late great, Saturday, 25 March 2017 23:51 (seven years ago) link

apologies if that question is too blunt

the late great, Saturday, 25 March 2017 23:51 (seven years ago) link

only once or twice but i love board games about israel. there's a whole genre of them that i like to browse sometimes. there are like 5-7 games about the yom kippur war (that are discussed here: http://foreignpolicy.com/2013/10/07/the-guns-of-october/). my friend has this game and he says it's tremendous - i'd really like to try it: http://www.preteristarchive.com/Books/1976_avalon-hill_siege-of-jerusalem.html - tho that's about ancient israel, not the modern state.

idk i guess i feel like what la lechera says is true for me too - i see a lot of these games as ways of trying to understand conflicts in strategic terms and produce insights that i wouldn't necessarily get from texts alone. i don't totally dismiss the competitive aspects but i obviously you can't rate a game by whether you won it or not. instead i'm interested in how the mechanics abstract the content in interesting ways, what kind of emergent strategies are set out etc.

the guy who made "liberty or death" the COIN game was being interviewed on a podcast recently (bruce geryk's) and he said that he doesn't think games like these can get conflicts wrong because they're not accurate simulations but more like artwork - they're the way that a particular person sees a particular set of events. one reason i'm very interested in the COIN games in particular are because they do simulate aspects of these conflicts that are not simply military figures on hex tiles. the 4-player aspect of revolving alliances opens up new ways of thinking too - "liberty and death" take a conflict (the revolutionary war) that is generally confined in games to 2 players and brings the indigenous people and the french in as well. there's a new COIN game in the works based on Gandhi and supposedly his faction is going to be entirely pacifistic (which is a new thing to the series) so that should be very interesting as well.

Mordy, Sunday, 26 March 2017 00:01 (seven years ago) link

wow!! would play gandhi

i definitely understand squeamishness btw even tho it wouldn't really occur to me. i'd even be interested in playing that holocaust game they made not long ago (even if i think the holocaust resists being abstracted like that and it does the history a disservice in the attempt) but i'd still be interested in trying it! idk i don't really get offended by things at least not when it comes to abstract art/ideas/literature.

Basically I'm with Mordy and Lech. Games on historical conflicts (really, any game attempting to abstract a real-world topic from history to science) in game terms are also a kind of dense data compression. You unpack the insights of the designer through understanding the rules, components and how they interact through play.

RL rocket scientist Phil Eklund is a cult figure among some board gamers for designing games from turn-of-century US-Mexico border business/conflict (Pax Porfiriana) to solar system colonization (High Frontier) to Meso/Cenozoic evolution (Bios: Megafauna) to Paleolithic cultural evolution (Neanderthal). His games used to have reference lists longer than the rules, and be about as dry in play, but he's gotten considerably better about streamlining things after retiring a few years back. I'm trying to unpack his Bios: Genesis (assembly of life from competing chemistries) now.

Puts our misgivings about casualties of war in perspective:

We’re hours into our war and no longer strangers. Jeff Gringer, known to us as the Taliban, stands and thrusts a hooked finger in my direction while declaring he’s going to “pop those Coalition troops in Helmand.” The Taliban is using a car bomb to ambush my men. I rock back in my chair, resigned to my fate.

Robert Leonhard, pulling the strings for the Warlords, is in real life a national security analyst at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and a retired Army lieutenant colonel. He has been sitting in mostly quiet concentration but finally speaks up: “I hate to hear you say that, Jeff. My oldest is in Helmand province.” He pauses, moving his glasses from his nose to the top of his graying high-and-tight. “I think. He can’t tell me exactly where he is.”

Sanpaku, Sunday, 26 March 2017 06:02 (seven years ago) link

I think this ends up unappealing in both directions, for me. Like, a) palpable discomfort isn't a state in which I'd ideally be spending my limited leisure time, but also b) the people who were actually having to make the decisions you're playing a simulation of were no doubt feeling something way beyond palpable discomfort, and to sit around a dinner table drinking wine and telling yourself you're increasing your understanding of what they went through feels naive at best, and maybe disrespectful?

played Dead of Winter again last night. again no Betrayer and this time everyone fulfilled their win conditions. somehow it's less satisfying to win when everyone else wins too.

in the middle of a COIN game (Falling Sky). playing as the Arverni. it's... okay. the mechanics still take some getting used to and it's not always clear what moves would best move me towards my win condition. especially since my win condition depends on removing legions from the board, which means i'm somewhat reliant on Rome spreading thin so i can pick them off - i'm kinda waiting around and marshaling my forces. it's also not my ideal theme - tho hopefully after this i'll understand the system well enough that i can jump into, eg, andean abyss, without much trouble.

Yeah, agreed - always a drag when you think you have more time to carry out some plan and then kind of suddenly someone draws the last Grain Card or whatever and oops, if that stack is empty and there are fewer than five locomotives left on the board then that means the game is over after this turn! Much prefer games on a 'clock' - they may also feel a turn too short but you at least know it's coming, and are scrambling to get your ducks in a row and deal with what feels like a more tightly planned scarcity of available moves/actions.

Duel is the 2-player version of 7 Wonders. It's supposed to be great but it has one of those long manuals you can never be fucked to read, so we haven't played it yet.

feel colt express suffers from some characters being overly more powerful than others

nxd, Wednesday, 16 August 2017 15:15 (six years ago) link

some stuff i've been playing lately:

Keyflower - this is still my favorite board game. it's a really clever synthesis of auction and worker placement mechanics, where each player is building their own village out of hex tiles and you use your worker meeples both as currency to bid on the tiles and as workers to activate tiles for resources & various other effects. because of the auction and the ability to use and block your opponent's tiles, it's much more mean and cutthroat than other eurogames of this style. you also only use around half of the tiles in a 3-4 player game, so the games can play out wildly differently depending on what comes out.

Concordia - this was out of print for a couple years and built up a considerable amount of hype during that time - it just finally became available again and i picked it up and i'm glad i did. it squeezes a really rich resource management/hand management game out of a very simple ruleset (the rulebook is just 4 pages, and that includes full descriptions of every card in the game). it's probably the easiest middleweight eurogame to teach to the uninitiated, without sacrificing any amount of depth.

Terraforming Mars - i didn't really like this. as a drafting game, it reminded me of the MTG sets with 'tribal' themes where once you decide whether you're the elf deck, or the goblin deck, or the wizard deck, it just becomes a routine set collection exercise - here it's the microbe engine, or the electricity engine, or the plant engine, but it's the same deal where the strategies are clearly delineated and prescribed, and after everyone plants their flag in one, the game feels very scripted. with MTG you still get to play games of magic after the draft, but here choosing the cards you want is pretty much the entire game. i'm willing to play this again, since it is incredibly popular and maybe i'm missing something, but i wasn't impressed - it felt almost like it was halfway between a eurogame and an 'experience generator' game.

Great Western Trail - finally got to play this last weekend and unlike Scythe and TMars, i think this one lives up to the hype. the rulebook is kind of scary, this game has a lot of 'side dish' systems in it, but the core gameplay loop of building a deck of better and better cows while doing laps around a growing action board is surprisingly fun and intuitive, and the folks i taught it to went from apprehensive to engaged after the first lap. the game is nicely tuned to always give you a manageable number of options every turn, so even though it's a long game, it didn't feel that long since no one got frozen up. really want to play this again, there's a bunch of cool stuff that we barely touched in our first play since the random setup didn't favor it.

Anyone played mad king Ludwig? I kind of want a carcasonne-type game that isn't carcasonne

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 16 August 2017 17:25 (six years ago) link

Xpost - ok! duel! i'll try harder! we took about two years to bother reading the RFTG rules and that was definitely worth the effort in the end...

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 16 August 2017 17:27 (six years ago) link

I love Mad King Ludwig! Deceptively hard.

chap, Wednesday, 16 August 2017 18:07 (six years ago) link

It's more mathy than I remember Carcasonne being (only played the latter once).

chap, Wednesday, 16 August 2017 18:15 (six years ago) link

xp i think Isle of Skye is a better game than Mad King Ludwig, it's got almost the same tile-pricing mechanic but it plays a lot faster due to everyone setting their prices simultaneously rather than waiting for one person to do it at a time. it's just as dry as carcasonne though - if the theme / wacky tile shapes of Ludwig is what appeals to you then go for it, it's still a fine game.

Favorite plays in the last year: Chicago Express, my favorite "build a railway across America while not going into too much debt" game, Mississippi Queen with the "Black Rose" expansion, a good step up from Sorry! for those who want a race and some bumping people around; Shadows Over Camelot, a co-op with a lovely theme and (possibly!) a secret traitor, as you run back and forth putting out fires and watching everything go to hell, and very little space for players to try and make everybody else conform to their personal plan of action; Stone Age, the best worker-placement game I've tackled despite some visual clutter and serious need for individual plastic organizers to keep your tableau under control.

yellow is the color of some raisins (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 16 August 2017 22:06 (six years ago) link

Stone Age is great fun, I don't know whether it's that it's just gateway enough (always being able to farm food for example) that it becomes less of a points salad that makes it such an attractive default option when you don't know what to play.

Sagrada is maybe the thing I've played the most this year - dice pool rolling and placement on player board, quite nice action card modifiers, relatively simple scoring. Better than the filler descriptor some might give it, but short enough to feel that way.

Kodama is still very entertaining and the thing people seem to want to play as filler. Is it just the cute factor? There has to be a more game-y reason why I think but I'm struggling to think of it.

Shem Phillips' North Sea trilogy have reached Expansion stage and I haven't even managed to play them as RuneSaga yet. I thought he was in with a fighting chance for Spiel but the judges didn't agree.

Deep Space D-6 is the most fun solo game I've got and the forthcoming expansion looks great. Reprint soon to be available for those that missed out on kind of a dicey worker placement rpg-ish cheapie.

Dwar7s Fall is top of my to be played pile, with Manhattan Project: Energy Empire below it.

I appreciate this really makes me look like a worker placement guy.

Shadows of Malice: A+, cannot recommend enough

after playing Great Western Trail some more, I think it's now my favorite board game. there's a lot of rules overhead even for a eurogame, but once you get everyone on board it plays fast and is just magical.

Anyone played Mansions of Madness? I'd been idly contemplating it as a fun holiday game for the family and then I was suddenly surprised to find it significantly marked down over the weekend (its MRSP is fairly $$$) and so, well, now I own it and hope I don't regret owning it.

Fantasy Eyelid (Old Lunch), Monday, 26 November 2018 13:11 (five years ago) link

It's very atmospheric and immersive but I'm not sure I'd describe it as a fun family holiday game! It's long, fiddly and (deliberately) frustrating. But maybe your family's into that. I'm sure you'll enjoy it with the right group, at its best it can be gripping and tense.

nb, I take it you mean the second edition, the first is even moreso.

chap, Monday, 26 November 2018 15:45 (five years ago) link

Yeah, second edition. I was wary about a board game with a required app component until I read the reasons why it was added.

I think my family will be into it, as we usually engage in a long board game sesh or two during the holidays and they're into the dark n' spooky. I was thinking, though, about also picking up a copy of Betrayal at House on the Hill, as it sounds similar yet less demanding.

Fantasy Eyelid (Old Lunch), Monday, 26 November 2018 15:51 (five years ago) link

I'm not that into board games apart from TTR which I play as an app, but I'm trying to buy the Polish game M/S Batory for my bf for Christmas. Amazon.co.uk has it but for an insane amount of money! Trying to get it directly from the manufacturer, Granna.

Fam was into Mansions of Madness. For the first couple of hours, anyway. We started what was supposed to be the introductory game (60-90 minutes) and it wound up taking the entire night, and then we paused it at 2am and it's just waiting for us downstairs. My sister has almost certainly tapped out at this point. It's fun, but goddamn it would've been nice to have a more realistic idea of what we were getting into.

speaking of early 80s hex games, i have been itching to get copies of steve jackson's OGRE and GEV ... anyone remember those?

and on another early 80s note, anybody played "twilight imperium lite" aka REX by fantasy flight games? supposedly a re-skinning of an old dune boardgame that was supposed to be the shit.

the late great, Thursday, 17 January 2019 18:59 (five years ago) link

They got taken over by the version of OGRE that got put out a couple of years ago which was the size of a small car* and so the prices are ridiculous afaik. He's also been trying to whip up enthusiasm for a similar giant box Car Wars without progress despite desperate pleas.

*Not necessarily an exaggeration

Bimlo Horsewagon became Wheelbarrow Horseflesh (aldo), Thursday, 17 January 2019 19:28 (five years ago) link

i'm seeing very good condition copies of ogre for like $40-$60 used. is that ridiculous?

i collect early 80s roleplaying games and $50 is pretty much the going rate for a good condition box set by TSR or FASA or GDW or chaosium

i actually recently paid more than that for a shrink-wrapped star frontiers *module*

the late great, Thursday, 17 January 2019 19:37 (five years ago) link

i had no idea about the new ogre! looks pretty sweet, and easier to foist on my group than gloomhaven.

what's the diff between the "designer's edition" and the "sixth edition"? just a pile of minis? or extra rules too?

the late great, Thursday, 17 January 2019 19:41 (five years ago) link

I would have thought $40-$60 for a game with paper maps and 1mm cardboard chits was a bit steep, but then I'm not as connected to the market as you. Also Britain might be a slightly different market - I got the smallbook Traveller box + about 6 extra books for about $20 a couple of years ago and a beaten up but complete Top Secret for $10 about 3 weeks later.

No idea about new OGRE, sorry.

Bimlo Horsewagon became Wheelbarrow Horseflesh (aldo), Thursday, 17 January 2019 19:58 (five years ago) link

those are great prices for traveller + top secret!!

when i say good condition i mean fresh looking copies w/ uncut counter sheets, possibly still shrink-wrapped ... you can definitely get complete boxes w punched counters and/or box wear for about half what i said

the late great, Thursday, 17 January 2019 20:12 (five years ago) link

I spent many nights soloing Ogre, GEV, GEV's expansion, and the unplayable spin-off Battlesuit in the mid-80s.
As wargames go, they were all pretty undemanding (I was wargaming WWIII via the GDW series at the time).

At moments, I'm tempted, but 20 years ago I committed to expelling all wargames from the collection save for Craig Besinque block classics (Napoleon, Rommel in the Desert, EastFront etc), and the peculiar chess-like Simmons designs (Bonaparte at Marengo, Napoleon's Triumph). If someone bought my copies of Ogre and GEV for $2 and is selling them for $60, more power to em.

I'm working through a longer bout of social anxiety at present, and have considered joining local gaming meetup groups. Any encouraging anecdotes from others returning to the hobby with strangers would be welcome. I just remember being in my college gaming group, with some greying visitors with questionable manners and hygiene lurking, and I don't want to be that guy.

My family and I tested out Boardgamearena, which is free in the base version. Text chat only - supposedly Premium adds video, but we just paired it with Zoom. Did a test game of Can't Stop, which worked fine altho it automated one too many steps IMHO. The interface and graphics are all like playing a browser game in 2003, ymmv as to whether that's a good thing. We're gonna try it again with something more substantial, probably Stone Age as everyone in the family loves that one. Sean, that's great!!

My recent plays are all pretty regular stuff -- Ticket To Ride and Guillotine with the family on thanksgiving, Azul: Summer Pavillion w/ the wife & friends.

I haven't done as much solo gaming since I started running RPGs twice weekly, but I'm hoping to spend time with The Great Battles Of Julius Caesar (GMT) over my winter week off. Also in wargame world, I love "With It Or On It" by Hollandspiele; a very simple system about collapsing lines of hoplites. There's a slightly more complicated but similar game by the same designer (Amabel Holland) called "The Grass Crown" but since my boardgaming time has dropped so much, I'm not sure it's sensible for me to pick up rn.

Next time we have friends over for game afternoon, I'm hoping to run through a Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective case. (can also be played solo.)

Going to repeat my suggestion for Sprawlopolis - it's a tiny portable little game but is really engaging and gets the mind chugging, trying to optimize your roadworks based on the varying victory conditions.

i collect early 80s roleplaying games and $50 is pretty much the going rate for a good condition box set by TSR or FASA or GDW or chaosium

Woof, some of the Call of Cthulhu box sets I'm looking for would be a STEAL at $50.

ian, Monday, 28 November 2022 20:47 (one year ago) link

well done! never got the gloomhaven bug but excited to read that

actually played eldritch horror for first time in a long time over last week's vacation. it was very fun. finally did the thing i've been meaning to do where i pulled out all the expansion cards (six boxes worth) and sorted them into sets (by expansion). playing with only the base cards made things way faster and simpler

i have been looking at root, its expansions and oath quite a bit. the art is irresistible. i already have too many games i don't play, though

the late great, Monday, 28 November 2022 20:49 (one year ago) link

I think the cost of the original CoC box rocketed after Chaosium's new old box.

I paid about $50 for a Top Secret box about 10 years ago, think they're routinely double that now. I've got a fairly pristine 1st Edn Gangbusters and the first two (?) modules from when they came out.

Hello I'm shitty gatsworth (aldo), Monday, 28 November 2022 20:56 (one year ago) link

xp inflation is a thing. that was definitely a "pre pandemic stimulus check" post!

but prices seem to be are creeping back down. i've been looking at car wars box sets, for example (the deluxe cardboard one with cat # sjg1301, not the little plastic boxes which are being reprinted) and if you're willing to live with punched counters and bent corners you can find them for $30-50

the good news about call of cthulhu is that moving forward or backward between different editions is generally pretty easy. the 1st edition stuff with the endearingly goofy artwork is super spendy, but if you're willing to grab kinda ugly 4th or 5th ed stuff it's a lot cheaper. i actually have the 5th ed softcover (iirc 4th ed softcover was the first one i got, in high school) so that works out ok for me

for example if you can deal with an early 90s copy of masks of nyarlathotep vs an 80s one the going rate on ebay goes from $100-200 to around $50-70. orient express bit harder to find but one just went on ebay for $70!

the late great, Monday, 28 November 2022 20:58 (one year ago) link

i would say like any collectibles (discogs, rpgs on ebay) you have to learn to ignore whatever the current general asking price is and focus on the sold prices. i find that on ebay saved searches + alerts are my friend. like i am currently shopping for dungeoneer's survival guide 1st ed (not sure why, aside from map of the underdark it's even more useless than the wilderness survival guide, because i'm collecting i guess) and while there's always copies going up for $75 a fine looking copy for $30 shows up about once a month.

and hey at least we're collecting crappy 80s rpgs and not magic cards. i don't have any interest in mtg but am constantly seeing 1st wave stuff i owned going for $1000 or more!

the late great, Monday, 28 November 2022 21:03 (one year ago) link

I've got one of the 90s reprintings of Masks in book form, and the recent reprint of orient express, so I'm not particularly concerned about getting those as original boxed sets. Thinking more along the lines of Dreamlands, Gaslight, some of the old campaigns like Spawn of Azathoth.

xpost, god don't remind me of the MTG cards I had when I was a youth.....

I got my dungeoneers survival guide out of an urge to just have all the the core AD&D hardcovers; this would have been a few years ago, it was $25.

Sorry, I don't want to de-rail this thread into an RPG thread.

I haven't played Eldritch Horror in ages. I like it, but my wife does not so much.

xpost -- I know a guy in the bay area who has a copy of car wars for sale i think. He always picks games up at the Alameda flea if they're cheap.

ian, Monday, 28 November 2022 21:14 (one year ago) link

I want to say my box is 2nd Edn because I'm sure it's got the award winning decal but I could be wrong.

I have no idea why I bought the 40tg Anniversary 2" box but there you go.

Hello I'm shitty gatsworth (aldo), Monday, 28 November 2022 21:14 (one year ago) link

lol I bought the reprinted 1" AND 2" boxes. The 2" has a bunch of the early supplements, which I like to read even if as adventures they are a bit old fashioned. The 1" box remains shrink wrapped; I think I thought I was gonna give it as a gift to my cousin but ended up getting her the current starter set instead.

ian, Monday, 28 November 2022 21:17 (one year ago) link

i will derail it for you by agreeing that the campaign sets can be pretty expensive. the dreamlands stories might be some of my favorite lovecraft so that's one i was interested in awhile back and sort of gave up on

i've always been interested in chaosium's elrich and hawkmoon games (stormbringer is the umbrella name, i think?) which are fairly generic 80s percentile dice crap with some nice maps. not super different from rolemaster / merp products, without the amazing crit tables. and those are just always expensive too. idk what it is about them.

i always thought chaosium was an american company (mailing address in berkeley?) but also a lot of these games seem a lot easier to find on uk ebay, more press coverage in uk mags like white dwarf vs. dragon. did they move from uk to usa at some point? feel like this would be easy to look up, but i'm home sick from work today so feeling especially lazy

the late great, Monday, 28 November 2022 21:19 (one year ago) link

They are still based in the US but a lot of the current development team is based in the UK iirc.

I think the Elric & Hawkmoon games are expensive because of Moorcock superfandom.

ian, Monday, 28 November 2022 21:20 (one year ago) link

as someone who's thought about writing a jerry cornelius rpg, i can relate to moorcock superfandom.

also there doesn't seem to be a good default ttrpg thread. maybe the "incredible austerity" one?

i can certainly understand not liking eldritch horror. it took me a long time to figure out to figure out the theory of it (well, develop my own, which may or may not be right) and figure out a workable strategy for it. and even with that you're always getting senselessly punished by attrition, for no real reason other than getting punished by attrition is how mythos horror works!

the late great, Monday, 28 November 2022 21:24 (one year ago) link

has anyone played Tapestry? my old Iron Crown friends were raving about it last time we hung out

also really enjoying Code Words when we can get 4 people together

sleeve, Monday, 28 November 2022 21:28 (one year ago) link

Code Names (i think that's the actual title?) is fun; there's a 2-player version that we picked up and it's just not as fun as the 4 player version imo. But we rarely have another couple to play with. Not aware of Tapestry!

ian, Monday, 28 November 2022 21:29 (one year ago) link

It gets mentioned upthread, but I'm interested in playing Eclipse. I like the 4x style of interstellar exploration. There's also the GMT Space Empires game but i think it's between printings rn.

ian, Monday, 28 November 2022 21:35 (one year ago) link

Code Names! yes. I can't imagine how that would work with only two players, the 4-person dynamic is so fun

Role Playing Games: Search/Destroy

This is the generic rpg thread but a long time since anyone posted there

Role-Playing Games crush of shame poll

Why did you stop playing Role Playing Games?

Other candidates

There was one for indie/non fantasy RPGs that was in use a couple of years ago but I can't find it

But yes, the austerity one is the most up to date I guess

Hello I'm shitty gatsworth (aldo), Monday, 28 November 2022 22:41 (one year ago) link

eclipse is super fun! but i haven't played in AGES. i also love Arkham Horror (the original bgg, not the card game) for some of the reasons you describe re Eldritch Horror above. but no one ever wants to play with me. it's so long (which is maybe why i love it)

two weeks pass...

Any recommendations for a game for an 11 year old boy, to play with the family? I've found quite a few hippy nature ones, I think I want to go a bit cooler, space themed if possible.

ledge, Tuesday, 13 December 2022 10:38 (one year ago) link

Galaxy Trucker. You each have to put together a spaceship from loads of pieces, like a competetive puzzle. Then you have to fly that spaceship to its destination, and hope the hodgepodge of elements will see off the asteroids, pirates, slavers and other misfortune that might come your way.

ledge, Tuesday, 13 December 2022 13:43 (one year ago) link

I love it, am always playing it with my 8yo, but very much with training wheels on, so I reckon it should keep an 11yo involved, but also not scare off the rest of the family.

his cartoon heart expands, then he relaxes by smoking crack (stevie), Tuesday, 13 December 2022 13:46 (one year ago) link

Yeah my first thought was Galaxy Trucker but there are guns etc (although purely defensive) if that isn't what you're after. (Solely based on "hippy nature" as a prompt.)

Tiny Epic Galaxies, Chimera Station, Asking For Trobils all good but don't know how in print the last two are which would probably be my recs. I'd also say Loop Inc but I think it's too complicated.

Hello I'm shitty gatsworth (aldo), Tuesday, 13 December 2022 14:12 (one year ago) link

if you think they could handle a worker placement / tile laying game, i have black angel and think it is pretty cool. i think a sharp 11 year old could swing it.

the late great, Tuesday, 13 December 2022 14:31 (one year ago) link

on the other hand might be a bit too much, give the 2-3 hr play time, plus i think shifting victory conditions could be especially confusing for some kids

the late great, Tuesday, 13 December 2022 14:34 (one year ago) link

Yeah 2-3 hours is a bit long. Thanks for all the suggestions, I've bought Galaxy Trucker.

ledge, Tuesday, 13 December 2022 15:26 (one year ago) link

Galaxy Trucker is one of the few games I can think of that uses dexterity and a fun theme but is surprisingly strategic. Great choice for an 11yo I think!

Vinnie, Tuesday, 13 December 2022 15:43 (one year ago) link

galaxy trucker is classic, also you just unburied a memory of a different game i played like a decade ago that was a space 4x strategy game except movement around the board was done by finger flicking your wooden disk spaceship crokinole-style

ciderpress, Tuesday, 13 December 2022 15:47 (one year ago) link

I wasn't sure whether Galaxy Trucker truly counts as dexterity but I would be very bad at the game you describe, regardless of how strategic it is
