i was on a bus in thailand riding through what im guessing is the mangosteen heartland and there was just all this mangosteen stuff everywhere signs billboards bumperstickers and then the giant mangosteen statue and i was all wtf is this purple fruit, then the bus let us off at the ferry and and there was a lady selling them on the ferry and i bought like 20 of them for a dollar and the rest of the trip i just went to town on those lil fuckers, years later i was in halifax and i saw some in a store and freaked the f out and bought them for like 2 dollars a piece cause they were illegal in america and brought them to a dinner party but when i tried to rip one open it was as hard as a rock, i was all on no its totally too old huh but i was so intent on eating it and drunk that i decided to cut it open and i slipped and had to go to the hospital and get three stitches on my finger, i took the mangosteens with me, they did end up being rotten

I was at a tiny bodega in chinatown over the summer, there was this big argument between a customer and the shopkeep, apparently it was over some rotten mangosteens - the cusomter had bought them a day before but they were hard as a rock and black inside and gross and she brought them in but the shopkeep kept on saying it was the customers fault and it wasnt the stores responsibility at all, they shouted a lot and the customer ended up crying in the store and leaving, all this over a $5 bag of rotten mangosteens

lag∞n, Sunday, 11 November 2012 17:54 (thirteen years ago)

lol misfortch

but it really does suck when you end up buying fruit that turns out to be rotten or just off - mostly avocados re: rottenness and peaches and plums re: gross tastingness, in my experience, because often you just can't tell - it's total buyer beware, like going back and complaining and getting yr money back just doesn't work with fruit! :/

It's a fun interview! :)
i had to rush the editing, so excuse that, and I wished I could've included the 3+ minutes of Mark and Adam talking/rapsodizing about mangos! But had to cut in interest of time. I should just make a clip of that part a d send it to you as it's kind of amazing.

‎"I have a question for you: Why are there so many Jews in fruit? There are so many Jews who are in the fruit business: Mark Slutsky, the screenwriter, is Jewish. Adam Gollner, the author, is Jewish. There's a guy, David Karp, who is the genius of fruit. He's Jewish. He is obsessed and competitive. Perhaps it's that Jews are so data-filled."

hey s1ocki how do you know when a persimmon is ripe? my roommate & i bought a bunch but we keep slicing them open before unripe and they make your mouth feel all dry and awful. thing is they seem totally ripe, like any other fruit would be even overripe given how soft it is

thanks

i'm not sure, tbh, i've never really "gotten" persimmons even though they seem to be in in a big way this year. always seemed kinda chalky to me.

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 16:17 (thirteen years ago)

Surgery is sometimes employed, but Coca-Cola has also been successfully used to chemically shrink or eliminate persimmon-related bezoars.

right??

zero dark (s1ocki), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 14:48 (thirteen years ago)

How do you pick the right ones?? we got 4, and I think only one was ripe - the others were rotten or something, rock hard and smelled weird.

just1n3, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 17:17 (thirteen years ago)

p.s. when will the fruit hunters be available to view in the sf/bay area? or on netflix/itunes/amazon? my husb is desperate to see it, weird fruits are his favourite thing.

just1n3, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 22:26 (thirteen years ago)

rock hard ones are a def no no, you want the ones that have some 'give'

乒乓, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 22:27 (thirteen years ago)

fwiw I think mangosteens are one of the most consistent fruits to eat ... provided they're not rotten? as long as the flesh is white

zero dark (s1ocki), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 22:33 (thirteen years ago)

there's a bit of cognitive dissonance or something going on with mangosteens - the flesh looks like either mushy garlic or some kind of animal gland, but the taste is so sweet and sharp and "fruity" (lol)
