Mel Gibson was arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in Malibu, Calif. early this morning for suspicion of DUI. Bail was set at $5,000.

He was pulled over on the Pacific Coast Highway and a Breathalyzer test was administered. The arrest report lists the time of arrest as 2:36AM and the time booked as 4:06AM.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles Country Sheriff's Department told TMZ, "Mel Gibson was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. He was released later this morning. The investigation was still ongoing, just like it would be with any other person."

Calls to Gibson's rep were not immediately returned.

Gibson is also known for several other works, including the Lethal Weapon and Mad Max series of films in which he starred.

The incident gained further attention when it was alleged that the LA police department had tried to cover up Gibson's offensive remarks.

Listen, I understand that you found The Passion of the Christ stirring and meaningful. But there's really no way around this one. The guy got drunk and began abusing a Malibu cop — a job category that vies with Shiite sheikh for perhaps the least likely to be held by a Jew — for potential Membership in the Tribe, then starts ranting about how Jews are the source of all the world's problems. You just have to give in and accept this one. Mel Gibson has reportedly exploded in another racially charged tirade, this time throwing around the N-word at his ex, Oksana Grigorieva.

What the author is describing is real, but it's not finally Mel's problem, I don't think. Mel seems to be simply filled with hate for anything you could think of to be filled with hate for. He seems habitually hateful, rather as if the anger at being wronged somehow has become his very life force. This is bad. When he goes into the heavy-breathing bit on that tape, I can hear him re-enacting the scene in Lethal Weapon where he's being electrocuted.

I'll never be able to watch a Mel Gibson movie again without thinking of this tape. All of his movies will suffer, except for Hamlet.

And I mean that -- Zeferelli's Hamlet was, I think, cut to fit him. I never realized how sinister Hamlet was until I saw Mel play him. And he did a fine fucking job at playing the part of Hamlet that is a bit of a psychopath. Because that really is there in the text.

Funny sight gag. And, Mel and Joe Pesci re-enact the "hit me" scene from Raging Bull atop a building, but Joe was goaded into participating.
