Mel Gibson was arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in Malibu, Calif. early this morning for suspicion of DUI. Bail was set at $5,000.
He was pulled over on the Pacific Coast Highway and a Breathalyzer test was administered. The arrest report lists the time of arrest as 2:36AM and the time booked as 4:06AM.
A spokesman for the Los Angeles Country Sheriff's Department told TMZ, "Mel Gibson was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. He was released later this morning. The investigation was still ongoing, just like it would be with any other person."
Calls to Gibson's rep were not immediately returned.

His new film Apocalypto is set 3,000 years ago in central America and features dialogue spoken in an obscure Mayan dialect.
Gibson is also known for several other works, including the Lethal Weapon and Mad Max series of films in which he starred.

Listen, I understand that you found The Passion of the Christ stirring and meaningful. But there's really no way around this one. The guy got drunk and began abusing a Malibu cop — a job category that vies with Shiite sheikh for perhaps the least likely to be held by a Jew — for potential Membership in the Tribe, then starts ranting about how Jews are the source of all the world's problems. You just have to give in and accept this one. He's an anti-Semite, and with that knowledge, you may have to revisit the controversy over his treatment of Jewish authorities in The Passion and, no matter how moved you were by its depiction of Christ's agony, understand that the criticisms weren't pulled out of thin air. The guy has a serious problem with Jews. And to answer Jonah's questioner from below, the world will do just fine without a Mel Gibson Holocaust miniseries, thank you very much.

As a result, I must assume personal responsibility for my words and apologize directly to those who have been hurt and offended by those words.
The tenets of what I profess to believe necessitate that I exercise charity and tolerance as a way of life. Every human being is God’s child, and if I wish to honor my God I have to honor his children. But please know from my heart that I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot. Irrelevant.
>not the sole reason why he's getting branded a >racist, it's the cherry on top.
See, it seems fundamentally wrong to "brand" people one way or the other. It smacks of a witch-hunt mentality. If it's bigoted and wrong to never forgive somebody because of their skin color or religion, isn't it alsohard-headed and foolish to never forgive a person for making evil statements?
Even if they offer a retractionand profuse apology?
And again, are Jews a race? What is a race, anyway? I wish we could wean ourselves from these archaic, divisive modes of thought.

"outing" others as racists too often seems to substitute for examining racist institutions and cultural norms, and provide a means to prove one's un-racism --> "I'm not in the KKK, ergo I am not racist"

Anti-Defamation League Accepts Gibson's Apology
http://ia.imdb.com/media/imdb/01/I/67/05/12s.jpg The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has accepted Mel Gibson's apology for making anti-Semitic remarks after he was arrested last Friday in Malibu, California. The Oscar-winner was stopped by authorities for speeding and made several inflammatory comments including, "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Gibson issued an apology on Saturday as well as a more detailed response on Tuesday which included a direct reference to his controversial comments. In his second statement the actor said, "I am not a bigot. I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came form during that drunken display, and I am asking the Jewish community, whom I have personally offended, to help me on my journey through recovery. Again, I am reaching out to the Jewish community for its help." In response, ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman issued a statement saying, "This is the apology we had sought and requested. We are glad that Mel Gibson has finally owned up to the fact that he made anti-Semitic remarks, and his apology sounds sincere. We welcome his efforts to repair the damage he has caused, to reach out to the Jewish community, and to seek help. Once he completes his rehabilitation for alcohol abuse, we will be ready and willing to help him with his second rehabilitation to combat this disease of prejudice." Gibson has since been invited to speak to the Jewish Community on their holy day of atonement, Yom Kippur, in a bid to smooth relations.

On his Fox News program, Bill O'Reilly called Mel Gibson's recent anti-Semitic comments "inexcusable," but said it is "more important" to discuss the "point where the media and individual Americans start to enjoy the suffering of rich and powerful people." Guest Geraldo Rivera later suggested that O'Reilly refer to "that schmuck from MSNBC," apparently MSNBC host Keith Olbermann; Rivera added that the "schmuck from MSNBC" is a "lowlife." Rivera also asserted that Comedy Central hosts Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert "make a living putting on video of old ladies slipping on ice and people laughing" and that they "exist in a small little place where they count for nothing."

PAULA ZAHN: So, Michael, you've got a top Jewish Hollywood agent, Ari Emanuel, saying to folks in the entertainment business they should boycott his [Gibson's] project -- projects that is, even if it costs them money. Is he right?
MEDVED: No, he's ridiculous.
ZAHN: Why?
MEDVED: This happens to be Michael Moore's agent, and Michael Moore has done far more damage to the Jewish community, particularly regarding the issue of Israel, than anything Mel Gibson has ever done...
...And if [Mel] makes good movies, everything will be fine.

Send Mel to Israel!
[1000+ words of bullshit, and then]....At a time when Israel finds herself isolated as never before, imagine the impact of Gibson announcing a supportive trip to Jerusalem in the company of selected Jewish leaders--- with a reverent, remorseful stop at Auschwitz on the way. Yes, cynics will decry any attempt by Mel to rehabilitate his reputation as a cheap publicity stunt, but wouldn't such an an effort serve the interests of Jews and Israel more than a frozen state of permanent animosity?

This is not merely a setback for Gibson (if it indeed turns out to be a setback), it is a moment of turbulence in the conservative movement. Gibson's conduct gives momentary credibility to the false charges made about his blockbuster movie "The Passion of the Christ," and provides a fresh round of ammunitions to those who are the "Chicken Littles," inordinately worried about the "bigoted" views of the Christian right. And the irony is that some of this stereotypical smear will stick, even though many Christian evangelicals are staunch supporters of Israel.
I can't help rooting for Gibson to emerge victoriously redeemed from this abyss of shame and bad publicity. I love Gibson. I love his movies like The Patriot and Braveheart, regardless of any supposed departures from pure historicity depicted by those films. I applaud his audacity, independence and conviction in forging ahead with "The passion." He aroused the conscience of a nation.

even PAT BOONE has something to say from WND
http://www.wnd.com/images/boone.jpgLay off Mel Gibson, for Christ's sake!...I know both individuals personally, Mel and Christ – and my friend Mel is no anti-Semite. He worships and magnifies the most famous Jew who ever lived, Jesus of Nazareth, whom millions and millions call ''Christ,'' or Messiah.
So do I.
We've both committed our lives and eternal destiny to this rebbe (rabbi), this central figure of human history, the One from whose earthly life our calendar has been constructed. This year is 2006, A.D. – anno domini, ''the Year of Our Lord.'' The Year of the Jew who with his disciples, also orthodox Jews, forever changed and shaped religion, culture, philosophy, art – and a little thing called democracy...

...The first thing Mel Gibson and everyone else should do is ignore people like these. They are hypocrites. They were nowhere to be found when "Da Vinci Code" actor Ian McKellen publicly accused the Catholic Church of "perhaps misleading us all this time," and stated, "the Bible should have a disclaimer in the front saying this is fiction." And what of the movie itself, a bigoted anti-Catholic screed if ever there was one? Any denouncements from them?Where were they when Comedy Central's Dennis Leary aired his "Merry F*ing Christmas" special, publicly called the Christmas story "bull[bleep]" and said of the baby Jesus and the Virgin Mary, "I also believe that about nine months before he was born, somebody sure as [bleep] banged the hell out of his mom"? Any religious bigotry there, folks?Have any of these people ever said a word about the "South Park" DVD featuring an episode called "Red Hot Catholic Love," in which almost every Catholic priest and cardinal in the world favors having sex with altar boys because supposedly it's been enshrined in Vatican law? What about the "South Park" episode aired on television depicting a statue of the Virgin Mary with blood coming out her rectum?[...]The examples of anti-Christian, anti-Catholic bigotry in Hollywood are seemingly endless. Each and every one is uglier, more mean-spirited than anything Mel Gibson said. While Gibson's comments were those of a slobbering drunk, these anti-Catholic rants were not just deliberate, in most cases they were scripted. And while Gibson has apologized profusely, none of the people cited above has any intention of showing contrition because they have none...

...One never knows how much or how little influence a father has on a son. Many people simply assume that Mel is the fruit of a poisoned tree. But how can we know that he doesn't simply suffer from an inferiority complex because, for all his millions, he knows that his dad fathered 11 kids while Mel conked out after a mere seven? Or perhaps carting around the name Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson for 50 years just got to be too much, and that night, on Pacific Coast Highway, he simply cracked under the strain.
In conclusion, let me simply say that I can forgive him his tacky behavior, and even the hateful things he said. He's just an actor, after all. He makes movies, not national policy.
Good to know that when somebody like..say, Jane Fonda, Harry Belafonte, or the Dixie Chicks dares utter anything against our Dear Leader(which the guy mentions). Oh yeah, and that it was a bad childhood wot is responsible for it.

MEL GIBSON cheated on his pregnant mistress OKSANA GRIGORIEVA with a beautiful XXX-rated film producer - and the blonde hottie believes she caused the Mel and Oksana split!
Violet Kowal, a 26-year-old porn filmmaker from Poland, says she carried on a three-month affair with Gibson.
"Mel's breakup with Oksana doesn't surprise me at all," Violet tells The ENQUIRER in a blockbuster exclusive interview.
"Clearly, Mel can't commit to just one woman."
Violet says she had steamy sex with Mel eight times at his compound in Malibu and Santa Monica office in 2009.
Mel's attorney told The ENQUIRER that Violet's story is "an absurd fabrication" but Violet took a polygraph test that shows she is telling the truth about her relationship with Mel.
"Mel's great in bed! It was the best sex I've ever had!"

Oksana Grigorieva Describes Sudden, Recent Split With Mel Gibson04-20-10 08:07 AM
The unexpected news that Mel Gibson had split with the mother of his youngest child has been confirmed by Oksana Grigorieva, who appeared in front of cameras for the first time since breakup reports surfaced last week. During a press conference in Moscow on Monday to announce a charity concert, the Russian pianist told reporters, "I can tell you that we have split up, suddenly and recently. Unfortunately, I cannot give you the reason. But you will find out everything quite soon."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/01/mel-gibsons-new-racist-ra_n_632602.html
Mel Gibson has reportedly exploded in another racially charged tirade, this time throwing around the N-word at his ex, Oksana Grigorieva.
His abusive and disgusting rant was caught on audio tape and includes a wish that the mother of his infant daughter be "raped by a pack of [N-words]," Radaronline.com reports.
Mel also calls Oksana a whore and a c**t while their baby screams in the background, according to Radar, which has listened to the tape. Mel's rep has not denied the tape's content.
Here are a few of his threats:
"You're an embarrassment to me. You look like a f***ing pig in heat, and if you get raped by a pack of n***ers, it will be your fault."
"How dare you act like such a bitch when I have been so f**king nice."
"I am going to come and burn the f**king house down... but you will blow me first."
Here is a voicemail Mel allegedly left Oksana:
"This is my last message. I might be the father... Well, f** you... You psycho c***... Because I don't care. Do you understand me? I'm done."
Mel and Oksana are embroiled in a bitter custody dispute involving allegations that Mel abused Oksana and even knocked out her teeth. A source told Radar that Oksana made the recordings because she feared for her life and wanted to show how dangerous he was.
In 2006 Mel flew into an anti-semitic rage when stopped for DUI.
"F**king Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," he said before referring to a female cop as "Sugar Tits."

My dad used to tell me a story about how when he was a little boy his father, a Hollywood publicist, had mentioned that practically every working actress in Hollywood had posed naked at some point, or had something really shameful in her past that was kept hidden. So then my now worried dad asked "Even Barbara Eden?? Did she have to do anything bad?" and then my grandfather, trying to backpedal, said, "well...maybe she posed in a bikini at some point-- she's probably the sole exception." In telling the story my dad would convey the relief he experienced to know that Genie had not been comprised.
I guess the point is that this stuff ain't new.

I wonder how all of these self-righteous liberals view the Hollywood blacklistings of the McCarthy era. Probably they think it was soooooo wrong.Mel has made some big mistakes – we all have. It’s one thing when Kramer is doing a comedy show and he drops it, it is another when you are in a bitter messy custody battle with the one you love(d) and now realize she hates you, and realize you may not see your daughter reguarly. It is not an excuse, but there are circumstances – and it is not a crime. How do we know that he wasn’t putting out a new Rap Album? The fact is, if it is ok for 1 American to say, it should be ok for all Americans to say. If you say no, are you not infringing upon their freedom of speech? What about if you say no you are a racist, prohibiting them doing something that is allowed for one group based on skin color. I tell you what, these people who scream and cry about slavery and the bigots who murdered blacks, the majority of them do not know or understand the terror associated with it. Heros like Harriet Tubman,George Washington Carver, Frederick Douglas, Marin Luther King Jr. – these are some of the greatest heros of America. It’s hard to find them constantly complaining about others keeping them down. They did not let anyone, black, white, red, yello, etc keep them down. They did what they did inspite of the horrible atrocities they had to face. More time was devoted to doing, than time devoted to ‘boo hooing’. Mr. King even said that he wanted to be judged on his character, not on the color of his skin – and he was referring specifically to achievements and accolades. Its time for us to stop being so politically correct. No one knows what anyone means anymore. I don’t think that word should ever be used, make no mistake, I cringe everytime I hear it-regardless of skin color. But condeming someone, because of an emotionally charged rant that happened to be caught on tape(suspicious) is something worth reexamining. How do these self-righteous phobes view Roman Polanski? He raped and sodomized a 13 year old girl – and sees nothing wrong with it. Who cares if she wants the case to go away now – his crime was definitely directed to her, however he should have been punished to stop him from doing it again, which he had. This filthy pervert needs to be in jail for the rest of his life. And before you say that I am racist, I am black and I grew up just outside of Kansas City Mo.Comment by Kevin — Friday July 9, 2010 @ 4:43pm PDT REPLY TO THIS BOOMING POST

No shit.
In his comment, Kevin uses the classics: the "freedom of speech" line, and conflating in-group and out-group talk, and then wraps it up by positioning himself as a token/authority. A+
The fact is, if it is ok for 1 American to say, it should be ok for all Americans to say. If you say no, are you not infringing upon their freedom of speech? What about if you say no you are a racist, prohibiting them doing something that is allowed for one group based on skin color.

I love how, if someone can say something without getting arrested for it (freedom of speech), then we are supposed to take that as a sign we should not be allowed to disapprove of it, nor to conclude that the speaker is a prime asshole.
No one knows what anyone means anymore.

What is the significance of Kansas City (or just outside of it)?
Aimless, it is my pet hate when people conflate "free speech" with First Amendment rights. When I say someone is a dumbass or even tell them to STFU, I am in no way violating that person's rights to free speech, and certainly not in a way that defies the First Amendment.

Whoopi: I don’t like what he did here, but I know Mel and I know he’s not a racist… He may be a bonehead… I have had a long friendship with Mel…
You can say he’s being a bonehead but I can’t sit and say that he’s a racist having spent time with him in my house with my kids. I can’t say it and so I really just need to say that. I don’t like what he’s done. Make no mistake…
Joy: Do you think he’s anti-semitic?
Whoopi: I think he’s an a**hole (covers mouth, audio is silent)
Joy: Somebody says to a police officer, “The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” That’s not anti-semitic?
Whoopi: Drunks say stupid stuff to people all the time because they’re drunk. They’re out of control. They are not thinking they are idiotic. That’s why I don’t like alcohol. I can’t say anything about that because I know what people are like when they’re drunk. This rant, I don’t think he’s drunk on this rant…
Joy: A lot of people drink and don’t say those things.

this whole thing kinda makes me wonder what you have to do in Hollywood before you're essentially blackballed from the industry (and whether or not this will be it for Mel - my guess is probably not). Like it makes me think of all the women who when they do manage to stand up to their violent husbands boyfriends they just get ostracized by their friends, abusers family

I'm not meaning to ostracize surm for laughing. I've laughed at some dark shit in my time, and at inappropriate moments. It's just confusing to me, because the whole thing makes me feel very bad in a lot of ways. It's a stomach-churning mix of frightening and sad and awful. I mean, it makes me feel bad, and I can't imagine ever listening to it again.

Yes, let's not worry about spousal abuse and threats of murder because, y'know we're living in the internet age and frankly, that kind of stuff just doesn't cut it anymore.
Unfortunately when I turned the TV onto the Simpsons today, as I normally do, it happened to be the one where he's on it (by total coincidence, too). I couldn't watch it.

I just read this as a transcript, and that was hard enough to handle.
I think she's got apoint - he's unbalanced and he needs medication. This is not the reaction of a normal person even if they do feel spurned/used/whatever. This is a manic meltdown. I can only assume Mel feels like he's thrown away his whole previous life of longterm wife and kids, and now feels, obsessively, like she owes him something.
Uuughhhh.
― Gumbercules (Trayce), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 01:45 (fifteen years ago)

― Grisly Addams (WmC), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 01:52 (fifteen years ago)
xp The tone of his voice says as much if not more than his words. He wants to hurt her as badly as possible, and he wants her to feel that it's her fault when she does. Fucking good for her for not falling for this textbook tactic.
As for the "oh, lighten up guys" line of argument, maybe not everyone has spent time around an alcoholic who's in a trench and lashing out. It's one of the most frightening things in the world.
― kenan, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 01:52 (fifteen years ago)
Frankly, I'd just like to see him not alive, and I hope he hasn't amassed any real sort of Christian backing after making the Passion that will support him.
I might as well mention my almost obsessive abhorrence for Mel Gibson for some years now, thanks to the drunken anti-semitic stuff, combined with his making the Passion of the Christ (and from what I've heard, though I don't know if this is true, he, with his purported leanings toward Holocaust denial, was planning on making a movie about the Holocaust - the very thought of which crosses lines for me to an unimaginable degree. Apparently, I don't know if this is true either, but I heard his father was friends with notorious holocaust denier ernst zundel, too.)

― Cunga, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 03:42 (fifteen years ago)
They should make Lethal Weapon 5 now, but instead of giving Danny Glover any lines he just gives Mel Gibson a cold, dead stare the entire film.
― Cunga, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 03:50 (fifteen years ago)
What the author is describing is real, but it's not finally Mel's problem, I don't think. Mel seems to be simply filled with hate for anything you could think of to be filled with hate for. He seems habitually hateful, rather as if the anger at being wronged somehow has become his very life force. This is bad. When he goes into the heavy-breathing bit on that tape, I can hear him re-enacting the scene in Lethal Weapon where he's being electrocuted.
― kenan, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 03:58 (fifteen years ago)
I'll never be able to watch a Mel Gibson movie again without thinking of this tape. All of his movies will suffer, except for Hamlet.
― kenan, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 04:01 (fifteen years ago)
And I mean that -- Zeferelli's Hamlet was, I think, cut to fit him. I never realized how sinister Hamlet was until I saw Mel play him. And he did a fine fucking job at playing the part of Hamlet that is a bit of a psychopath. Because that really is there in the text.

Mel's career is toast, for anyone upthread still thinking he has a career. He'll probably still bankroll shitheaps no one will go see but eventually he will run out of money for pet projects. He looks all old and haggard too, he can't trade on handsome smiles and his status as the road warrior any more; and that's all he ever had going for him.
No one in America wants to see movies made by or starring a racist, wife-beating, shitheel who is vulgar to police officers. In his own words, he's getting too old for this shit.

the part where he screams about his therapist gave me a flashback to that film he produced Paparazzi where the actor/star is told by his therapist to vent his frustrations in a journal. dude leaves the office and we see Mel Gibson waiting outside, covered in a pile of journals.
now would be a good time for HBO or somebody to put that movie in rotation again
― da croupier, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:24 (fifteen years ago)
from a imdb user-review of 1989's Mel Gibson's Unauthorized Video Diary - directed by the guy that did Paparazzi which was apparently HBO behind-the-scenes kinda thing on Lethal Weapon 2.
Mel touches on pampered celebrities when he finds a "Quitter"- a non-elastic sock. He *furiously* confronts an executive of Warner Bros.(knocking out the guy's secretary in the process), only to find Chevy Chase has one too. They are calmed by new socks and shoelaces. Also, after he admits to wearing a toupee, he cites that there can be industrial espionage to halt movie production. That fact is demonstrated by Dan Ackroyd, who throws a knife into Mel's leg. Funny sight gag. And, Mel and Joe Pesci re-enact the "hit me" scene from Raging Bull atop a building, but Joe was goaded into participating.

― janice (surm), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:59 (fifteen years ago)
well one thing this is exposing (lol "exposing") is that Mel Gibson is a pig-ignorant self-absorbed hate machine who is disdainful of everything around him that is not himself, so it's kind of not surprising that in his quest for an angry blowjob he completely ignored obvious danger signs from the person he was browbeating
― Fee Fie Fo, FUNFNFUINFLFF! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 19:03 (fifteen years ago)
While I'm unsympathetic to the overwhelming majority of Mel's complaints and ways of expressing them, I'm guessing if any of us were as rich as Mel and shacking up with a marginally talented pianist, we'd totally believe we deserved oral sex before the jacuzzi.
― da croupier, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 19:04 (fifteen years ago)

he's obviously too rich to have been so since lethal weapon, but has he ever been institutionalized in his youth?there's a different quality to these than the christian bale/alec baldwin tapes, which seem like they have some measure of control.
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 19:10 (fifteen years ago)
well also the Alec Baldwin one, while wrong, was at least understandable from the standpoint of a dude in a nasty divorce/custody battle freaking out when one of his kids seemingly chooses the mom over him and the Christian Bale one was someone overreacting because someone ruined his work; there are understandable triggers behind the outbursts even though the outbursts themselves are indefensible
screaming at someone because they won't blow you before hopping in the hot tub is um yeah

wild speculation here, but, based on reading various creepshow web chatter over the years, i think it's a thing among right wing hater dudes to want to go after "foreign" women, since they are not brainwashed by US feminism, or something. eastern europe is seen as some kind of game preserve of hot women who keep their mouth shut.

I'm not sure if all this relates in any way to Mel Gibson, but this is definitely a thing in Finland too - some local chauvinist guys have said in interviews that they prefer Estonian or Russian or Thai women because they still know how to "look and act like proper women", unlike Finnish women who are apparently too assertive and "too much like men".

Having said all KINDS of shit while drunk, I'd have to say it's a mix. Some of it you really mean but wouldn't ordinarily say, some of it's just idle thoughts taken to their illogical conclusion, some of it's grasping at straws. What is safe to say is that drunk people talk more and faster than they think.
― kenan, Friday, 16 July 2010 02:56 (fifteen years ago)
^^^
― janice (surm), Friday, 16 July 2010 02:57 (fifteen years ago)
well WmC it's my understanding that alcohol acts on the prefrontal cortex, lowering inhibition, decreasing reflex times, impairing coordination, blurring vision, et al. all the behaviors a person undertakes while so impaired are of a piece, so to speak; you wouldn't say that the person has naturally poor reflexes, or that his blurred vision is his real vision that the alcohol's revealed the truth about, right? I mean, not for nothing has most everybody had the experience of going to bed with somebody they wouldn't, while sober, have gone to bed with. it's not that their true feelings came out when they were drunk; it's that the drink impaired their judgement. I do think a little drink can lower just enough inhibition to get you to tell secrets, to be a little more truthful. drunk people, though, aren't revealing the deep dark truths of their character; they're just drunk & talking shit, imo, and I think the physiology backs this idea up.
― les yeux sans aerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Friday, 16 July 2010 03:25 (fifteen years ago)
they're just drunk & talking shit, imo
I still think that they have to dredge said shit up from somewhere within themselves, that drunkenness short-circuits their ability to invent that shit.
― Grisly Addams (WmC), Friday, 16 July 2010 03:36 (fifteen years ago)

― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 16 July 2010 03:48 (fifteen years ago)
Agreed, surm.
Revelations of things better hidden is ONE effect, but like Kenan said, I've said amazingly inaccurate things while drunk (or high) just because my brain was short circuited. Plus, everyone - every single one of us - has internalized awfulness that is there for the dredging.

The judge in the Oksana Grigorieva/Mel Gibson custody war does not believe that Mel poses any danger to his daughter ... sources tell TMZ.
Sources connected with the case say Robyn Gibson's declaration was "powerful evidence" in yesterday's hearing. TMZ broke the story ... Robyn swore under oath Mel never physically abused her or their kids in the 28 years she was married to him ... and we're told it had an impact on Judge Scott Gordon.
Before becoming a judge, Gordon was a prosecutor in the L.A. County D.A.'s Office, specializing in domestic violence. The D.V. Unit has a mantra ... a man who commits domestic violence against one woman does it to everyone he's involved with. We're told Robyn's declaration resonated in the courtroom.
Sources say in the end, Judge Gordon felt Mel posed no danger to his daughter and allowed the status quo to stand. So Gibson continues to have visitation rights with baby Lucia as well as one overnight a week.

It worked with Mike Tyson in "The Hangover." But can director Todd Phillips make a celebrity cameo uncomfortably funny with a much more, er, complicated figure?
I think the answer would be having Mel not play himself and likely be filmed in scenes that could be easily excised if necessary.
― da croupier, Monday, 18 October 2010 20:56 (fifteen years ago)
Love how that piece dances around why Mel is arguably more "complicated," in that Tyson actually served a jail sentence for his crimes.

"I thought Mel would have been great in the movie and I had the full backing of Jeff Robinov and his team. But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew," Phillips said.

Winona Ryder, featured in the latest issue of GQ, talks about her long past in Hollywood -- and her horrifying run-in with Mel Gibson. She claims that she knew of the star's alleged intolerance far before anyone else."I remember, like, fifteen years ago, I was at one of those big Hollywood parties. And he was really drunk," she recalls to the magazine. I was with my friend, who's gay. He made a really horrible gay joke. And somehow it came up that I was Jewish. He said something about 'oven dodgers,' but I didn't get it."I'd never heard that before," Ryder continues. It was just this weird, weird moment. I was like, 'He's anti-Semitic and he's homophobic.' No one believed me!"

Actor-director Mel Gibson avoided the prying cameras of the paparazzi by going to the El Segundo Police Department at night to be fingerprinted and booked in connection with his misdemeanor battery conviction.
Gibson arrived at the station about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and was released a half-hour later.
A booking record lists Gibson as 5-feet-10 and 190 pounds.
His fingerprinting was required after he pleaded no contest Friday to the misdemeanor, related to a struggle last year with his former girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva.
He was sentenced to three years of probation.
Gibson was ordered to complete a one-year domestic-violence counseling program and separate mental health counseling.

The Cannes Film Festival premiere of the Jodie Foster-directed The Beaver just ended, and I'm told that there was a 10-minute standing ovation for the film and its star, Mel Gibson. Gibson missed the press conference earlier today but flew in just in time to support Foster and the film at the premiere. At that press conference, Foster said she made the film with a European sensibility and expected the crowd to be receptive. The film hasn't performed well in the U.S.

'get the gringo' is a surprisingly solid flick, but probs only of interest to me and hungry4ass and veggiegirl and dayo. way too sentimental to be as great as it could have been, and it's begging for a version minus the voiceover narration, but it's entertaining and gibson is in prime asshole form. his role is kinda equal parts 'payback' and 'lethal weapon'.
