Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles

Blind Fury

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

Number One

pisces (piscesx), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

Well, now I remember Blind Fury. Thanks a lot, Ned.

Ah Cinemax in the early 90s...

It's the lazy and immoral way to become super hip. (Austin, Still), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

"He don't need no dog."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

How long until Pluto Nash is completely forgotten?

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

When you STOP MENTIONING IT.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

I think I may have a Rutger Hauer movie even more completely forgotten than Blind Fury, though. The name is slipping away from me at the moment, but he played a Mad-Max style post-apocalypse rat exterminator. I actually saw in theaters with a girlfriend who was crazy about Rutger in an almost empty house (it was just us) in Eagle River, AK.

imdb....HOOOO!

It's the lazy and immoral way to become super hip. (Austin, Still), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

Not the Hitcher, no??

Anybody ever see CRASH AND BURN? It's like Robot Jox Redux.

paizuri-san (davidcorp), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

Nope, it was Split Second.

It's the lazy and immoral way to become super hip. (Austin, Still), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

Hail Caesar

James Herbert Dip (noodle vague), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, this game is too easy. Just do an imdb search on, say, Judge Reinhold.

James Herbert Dip (noodle vague), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

Alone in the Dark, i never even saw it advertised.

The Fog, remake.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

I remember seeing the trailer for Robot Jox when I was little and wanting to see it more than any other film ever, and not being allowed to because it was a fifteen.

They really should make more films about hundred foot high robots fighting each other.

chap who would dare to welcome our new stingray masters (chap), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

gymkata

geoff (gcannon), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

That Mel Gibson movie where he's rich and his son gets kidnapped - uh, Ransom?

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

The trailer for Strike Commando is the most awesome thing I ever saw.

James Herbert Dip (noodle vague), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

Man, when I was a little kid I saw the TV ads for Gymkata (I'm thinking this was around 6th grade) and wanted to see it so badly, cause I thought it would be the greatest thing ever. Never did, though. As a consolation prize, I did get to watch Kill or Be Killed and it's sequel Kill and Kill Again on vhs a few years back.

edit - oh SHIT! Gymkata is much later than I remembered. I would've been 16 when it came out.

It's the lazy and immoral way to become super hip. (Austin, Still), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

I kind of liked Gymkata! An excellent movie title, anyway.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

Judge Reinhold movies otm. "Off Beat" to thread.

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

20 new answers and no pedant to say "but if you remember about them they can't be completely forgotten, lol, amirite?" yet?

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 19 October 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

Mac and Me

A total E.T. rip-off whose only merit might've been that the main character was in a wheel chair, yet no fuss was made out of it.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 October 2006 15:17 (nineteen years ago)

"Nomads" starring Adam Ant and Pierce Brosnan.I saw it. In a theatre.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Thursday, 19 October 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

Not making a fuss out of a character using a wheelchair is more meritorious, surely?

James Herbert Dip (noodle vague), Thursday, 19 October 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

Er, that's what I said.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 October 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

90% of comedies

Dr. Alicia D. Titsovich (sexyDancer), Thursday, 19 October 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

Er, no it's not (xpost)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 19 October 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

I'm confused.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 October 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

McBain. Walken's version of Rambo. Best movie ever.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Thursday, 19 October 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

Right, to non-confuse Tuomas as I see it. You said "A total E.T. rip-off whose only merit might've been that the main character was in a wheel chair"

It was suggested that *not* having the wheelchair as a selling point is perhaps of more merit.

You said you said that.

You didn't. You said it would have been a point of merit for the movie to be all "whoo look, dude in a wheelchair, please watch my shit movie, it's better than ET because the dude's in a wheelchair" (please note, I'm paraphrasing a bit)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 19 October 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

That film with whatshisface

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 19 October 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

The Cell? With J-Lo.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 19 October 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

I'm still confused. What I was trying to say that the main character was in a wheel chair, but it *wasn't* a selling poin for the film, nor did it make a big thing out of it.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

and "SCENE"

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

Remove comma from Tuomas' original post and confusion is gone.

ONIMO's fish might turn into lizards (GerryNemo), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

Ah. We use commas a bit differently in Finnish.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

The Finnish word for "yet" always requires a comma before it.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

I got his meaning. It's Tuomas, he's not gonna be un-PC!

chap who would dare to welcome our new stingray masters (chap), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks. :)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry Tuomas, I got your meaning when I re-read the sentence.

James Herbert Dip (noodle vague), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

OSMOSIS JONES

Slumpman (Slump Man), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

There is a REAL McBain!?!? OMG did it come out before or after the Simpsons' first McBain!?!?

OSMOSIS JONES

Oh god, thanks for nothing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

the Adversary (but, still, a friend of yours) (Uri Frendimein), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

Corvette Summer (although I kind of like that movie)

the Adversary (but, still, a friend of yours) (Uri Frendimein), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

(that link was My Little Pony, 1986)

the Adversary (but, still, a friend of yours) (Uri Frendimein), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

I got Tuomas's meaning, but then my sentences are like slave labour camps for commas anyway.

Three million UK films of the eighties/nineties to thread. Basically anything before Shallow Grave.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

And after Local Hero?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

It's Billy Crystal and HE'S PREGGERS LOLOLOLOL!!!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 19 October 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

Winona Ryder and some Keanu Reeves looking guy battle the devil! Everybody else went to see Blair Witch 2, I think. Also, in the Osmosis Jones category, Monkey Bone.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

That one when Sylvester Stallone was an arm-wrestling truck-driver.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

i wish i could say Lost In Space, which is practically a feature-length argument against the use of CGI in film, but i keep seeing that damned space monkey with Lacey Chabert whenever i turn onto TBS.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

Monkey Bone was great fun!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

'the opposite of sex'

benrique (Enrique), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe not forgotten, but not given the mad props it deserves: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105466/

James Herbert Dip (noodle vague), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

oh god I remember that (now).

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

i watched that movie like ten times in a row when it came on video.

haven't seen it since.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:34 (nineteen years ago)

So was Lost in Space! And fantastically grim Wonderful Life bit - without A Bit Of Heart, the kid eventually kills everyone!

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

Jean-Claude Van Damme's The Quest, a film that is only about an hour and a half long but feels as if it was going on forever. in fact, i think i'm still watching it right now.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

and Roger Moore's wandering around in it, for no apparent reason. i think they wrote his character in because he just happened to be on the set hitting on production assistants or something

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

"Treasure Of The Four Crowns". An Indiana Jones ripoff from b-grade action factory Cannon Films, released during the mercifully brief 3-D revival of the early 80s. (Hands up if you remember Metalstorm or Jaws 3-D.) It occasionally shows up on TV sans the 3-D effects, which were bad even for their time.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

its impossible to forget Jaws 3-D

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

The 1997 made-for-TV remake of Vanishing Point with two ex-husbands of Exene, and two members of the 90210 cast.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

(We all know that "Osmosis Jones" was turned into a reasonably successful kid's show called "Ozzy & Drix", right?)

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

Jaws: The Revenge

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

chap who would dare to welcome our new stingray masters (chap), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

Michael Caine turns up in a lot of these... Case in point, The Hand (directed by Oliver Stone!)

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

Michael Caine again... Beyond The Poseidon Adventure

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know if "rightfully so" applies, but...

Roadside Prophets

got yourself a fish biscuit! (nickalicious), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

xxxpost

I ignored the "rightfully so" bit of the thread title.

James Herbert Dip (noodle vague), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

Roadside Prophets

I saw that in the theater! It's alright... I still like John Cusak's "FREE FOOD FOR THE MASSES!" freakout.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, I remember being totally creeped out by The Hand as a kid! Wasn't it about a comic book artist who loses his hand in a car accident, and later on the dismembered hand tries to kill him?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

Secret Agent Bill Cosby in... Leonard Part Six!

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

but that's like, legendarily bad, doesn't fit the thread. Ghost Dad is getting warmer.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

Ghost Dad was the first movie i ever saw by myself. my mom was in the other theater watching the Jungle Book with my little brother and sister, and she perodically came back to check on me and bring me cookies.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 19 October 2006 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

Return to Me

I'd totally forgotten I ever saw this one, even though it was only six years ago.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 October 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

Right, I get the comma-induced misconception now. Apologies all round. (about 3 million xposts)

The Opposite of Sex was good!

a regal trolley (aaron a), Thursday, 19 October 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

Too many of these have some sort of shitty kitsch value and will never be forgotten. In my house, at least.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 19 October 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

I was just thinking about The Golden Child, but then I was like, surely everyone remembers that one?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 October 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

I think Eddie Murphy's every eighties movie has been permanently imprinted into my mind, he was me and my friends' favourite actor when we were kids.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 October 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

'lawnmower man 2'

gear (gear), Thursday, 19 October 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, I have fond childhood memories of all those films, Gear, except the first one and Lawnmover Man.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 October 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

Blind Fury was great. Memories of hbo in the early 90s. Rutger hauer was in a lot of those made-for-HBO movies, too, like Deadlock/Wedlock, which I think got remade for fox tv.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 19 October 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

Ha, I was just reminiscing over bad films I watched when I was in my teens and just remembered "Soul Man" and I looked it up on imdb.com and OMG Julia Louis-Dreyfus was in it!

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 19 October 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

and "My Science Project" i always associate with "Real Genius", for the "mid-80s kids doing wonky science projects that go awry" category.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 19 October 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

super fuzz

love this movie.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 19 October 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 19 October 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

in fact, i blame the fact that my family had HBO for the majority of the 80s for remembering all these.

or what about "House 2: The Second Story"?

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 19 October 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

Condorman.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 October 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

I rented Condorman not to long ago, because I had these crazy fond nostalgic feelings for it. It should have stayed in my past.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 19 October 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

C'mon, you don't want to see Michael Crawford do wacky gunshots with a crutch? (Why do I remember this?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 October 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

Those early Disney videos always used to have this montage of footage from other flicks, and I would never have any idea where any of it was from, except for Condorman.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 19 October 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

The Onion's "Films that Time Forgot" is filled with these.

Oh yeah, and they finally covered _Electric Dreams_, one of my dad's fave flicks ever, which has the sweet Moroder/Lynne soundtrack.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 19 October 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

Critical Condition

We only watched this cos Joe Dallesandro was in it. I can't remember anything about it.

James Herbert Dip (noodle vague), Thursday, 19 October 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

Final Approach, which I only remember from the SR71 usage in the logo.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 19 October 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

There's a late 80s Buddy-Cop movie where one of the partners is dead, or something, and hilarity ensues. Anybody remember what it was?

James Herbert Dip (noodle vague), Thursday, 19 October 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

Apart from the "late 80s" part, you are describing this thing, but it's a TV show:

everything (everything), Thursday, 19 October 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

No, I know it's not that. And I'm pretty sure it's not the Bob Hoskins/Denzel Washington flick, Heart Condition (though that film probly belongs in this list, I can't remember nothing about it).

James Herbert Dip (noodle vague), Thursday, 19 October 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

The Last Chase - I actually saw this in a movie theatre. Lee Majors, Burgess Meredith, it played for a week and disappeared.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 19 October 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

my wife owned a copy of "Can't Buy Me Love" up until about 3 months ago when I convinced her to purge it from our collection along with a bunch of other old VHS crap, many of which could be included on this list ("Truly Madly Deeply" anyone...?)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 19 October 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

Roadside Prophets provided many 90s-era ROFLZ! (I think my copy is long gone though)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 19 October 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

I still own that! love it. How about:

Treat Williams and Joe Piscopo in Dead Heat

It's the lazy and immoral way to become super hip. (Austin, Still), Thursday, 19 October 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

none of these are THAT forgotten to me, mostly because of the HBO factor mentioned above.

Also I JUST watched House 2: The Second Story like, a month ago... BORRRRRRR-RING. But I sure thought the CATERPILLAR DOG was SWEET when I was a kid.

One of my OTHER movies starring Bill Maher when I was a kid was "Amazon Women of the Avocado Jungle of Death" which also starred Shannon Tweed. GREAT FLICK.

I was gonna say, the only reference I have for NBT is the video for "Same Song", I wasn't even sure the movie was ever released. Is DU actually in it?

tremendoid (tremendoid), Thursday, 19 October 2006 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

yeah...Chevy Chase and Demi Moore and some folks are driving through a weird part of NJ when they get a summons or ticket and have to go to some weird local court, where DU is on trial before them, who decide to perform Same Song for some reason. Then Chevy and Demi and co. get stuck there where there are these giant weird baby monsters and Dan Ackroyd takes off his nose and it just goes downhill from there. Someone, maybe even on this very message board, tried to convince me that it was some kind of dada genius, but I call bullshit on that. It's one of those criminal wastes of money where like, it wouldn't even have made a good low-budget film, but you know it costs 30 million to make, and you think of all those starving children and it just eats you up in side. But really, some of that imagery really sticks with you. Terrible movie.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 20 October 2006 03:41 (nineteen years ago)

I originally intended for the thread to be about stuff that sank without a trace in theatrical release and never got a cult following (hence Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles - at least I assume there's not cult around it.) I guess the era of home video has made this a much more difficult proposition, although I suppose the sheer increase in volume may make it easier for stuff to slip through the cracks. The era of the afternoon/weekend/late night "Million Dollar Movie" on tv is pretty much over thanks to blockbuster, netflix etc.. Still, there are a ton of badly dated mediocrities that nobody cares about. Shit, I guess some might even slip into public domain if the studios that made 'em don't care or figure they can make a profit from 'em.

Austin maybe the problem is that the truly forgettable films are well, forgotten - no one will think to mention them here! And when someone does its often as "once I saw this mental/crap/strange film where this guy flew off a roof and then ate bears for lunch OMG someone must know this, I'm going mad here".

Like this film I saw as a kid - it was an animated Jack and the Beanstalk that I vividly recall a scene in, which involved a witch making paper-cutout people, populating a church or hall of some kind with them and then they came to life and they were all... singing or something. WTF. After a lot of searching it turned out to be some very obscure Japanese anime version. Which led me to wonder why the hell I saw it in a small local cinema in Australia as a kid!?

they went into the mid-90s (that's a '94 entry there, definitely the tail end of the genre). i'm not sure where the start point is. klute, maybe. i'm sure it's all to do with feminism or something. fertile ground for somebody's master's thesis.

I watched "Tank Girl" in the theaters. We snuck in a quart of vodka for the four of us, so it was Tanked Girl by the end.

I think I can trump Aldo seeing "Swept Away" on a plane in the notorious-flop-on-commercial-transit category because I took Amtrak from Seattle to Portland once and our video entertainment was "The Avengers."

The Last American Virgin does have a cult following - something to do with its unexpected downer ending?

Times Square, while a bit of a dud overall, has positive things going for it - good soundtrack, notable performance by Robin Johnson. I actually own this on DVD, and the commentary from the director is really interesting - there was major meddling from a producer who wanted it to be the next Saturday Night Fever. He was forced to excise the lesbian aspects of the script, and to tack on a feel-good ending. He also points out how it captures a Times Square that is gone gone gone now.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 20 October 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

I remember Coma because once I was at the Lincoln Center Library For The Performing Arts and a little argument broke out between two library crazies, which the security guard broke up by saying "If you wanna beef, beef outside". One had apparently been reading the other's thoughts and suddenly said "You're not going to kill me. You're not going to kill anybody." Somehow the thing that made the whole thing really weird was when I saw that the mind-reading turntable hog had been listening to the soundtrack to Coma.

haha poor Klinton Spilsbury, that is like THE most action-movie-guy name of all time.

Some...well, not all hilarity:

Whether or not anyone knows about that disastrous catastrosphe that even the late, great Clayton Moore himself boycotted, one of the things it was most notorious for was the fact that its so-called "star", Klinton Spilsbury ("Klinton WHO?!?!?"), was causing any number of problems on the set, including, angeringly enough, an assault on a waitress who worked on the set.

Anyway, I recall once coming upon say, an old review from the NY Times, and while that Janet Maslin could sure be cynical(I think she insulted Moore in her review, how dare she!), what was interesting for starters there was that she said that there was more chemistry between the non-entity and the guy playing Tonto than there was when it came to who may have been the only woman in the cast(besides the LR's mother?). Indeed, that kiss between them was so groaningly clumsy and half-hearted I couldn't believe they wasted their money on such a dolt.

And to turn again to what the NY Times was mentioning, I recall once seeing someone else who'd seen it saying that he couldn't believe they'd built it around the "gay appeal" of the legend. GAH!

Then later on the thread this fellow speaks:

Klinton Spilsbury was a very sweet man, but very aggressive sexually. He would charm and try to jump just about any man or woman he found attractive and it took considerable effort to get him to take no for an answer. I was flattered by his attention, but at times I did feel like his behavior bordered on attempted rape. I would think a woman could be quite threatened by him. I hadn't heard about the waitress event, but it, sadly, would not surprise me if it were true.

Klinton never wanted to be an actor--I think he was trying to be a writer. He inherited family money and last I heard was living happily as a gazillionnaire on a ranch in Mexico somewhere. Probably terrorizing the help.

Sorry if I creeped anybody out, but I couldn't resist filling you in a bit.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 October 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and because you wanted (?) it -- the complete lyrics to the endless Merle Haggard song that appears throughout the film!

* Here is The Man In The Mask, as sung by Merle Haggard, in its entirety:

(FIRST VERSE, prologue) The legend started simply, just a boy without a home; Taken in by Indians, but still pretty much alone; He had to struggle with strange customs, and his own fears from within; He learned the wisdom of the forest, he learned the ways of the wind

(FIRST CHORUS, opening credits) The legends tell of men who died to open up the West; They rode through Hell to find their Promised Land; The legends tell of One who tried to fight for all the rest; His name unknown, a stranger alone, The Man In The Mask...

...The legends tell of One Brave Man who rode to meet the test; His name unknown, a stranger alone, The Man In The Mask

(SECOND VERSE) Del Rio was a town in trouble, a town with a gun in its back; Plagued by crime that just wouldn't stop, and cursed with a Sheriff that wore Black; So you'd think they'd be suspicious, but certain folks rarely are; They're willing to trust their law to just about any man who wears a star

(THIRD VERSE) Butch Cavendish lived undisturbed, waging his private war; And men who made mistakes were simply men he could not afford; Some say he was a monster, and others called him mad; Let's just say Butch Cavendish was everything that's bad

(FOURTH VERSE, following the ambush) One thing about that Cavendish, he knew how to set a trap; And he finished off the Rangers that day in Bryant's Gap; And Collins had to check them all 'till Butch was satisfied; Dead men lying everywhere, and bloody brothers side by side

(FIFTH VERSE) And Tonto recognized John Reid by the amulet he wore; But John had once saved Tonto's life, so this evened up the score; Tonto had to hide his friend and keep him out of town; 'Cause if Butch had known that one Ranger lived, he was sure to hunt John down

(SIXTH VERSE) What is it that brings two friends together, or sends the waves to the sand? And what is it that drives a creature of nature to reach out to the world of Man? Just such a creature was this Great White Horse, as wise and as wild as a runaway; And the moment John first laid eyes on it, he swore he'd ride it someday

(SEVENTH VERSE) Now John Reid was just a memory; the Masked Man had taken his place; But that didn't mean his heart wasn't touched when he saw Amy Striker's face; Amy had stayed to do her uncle's work, and to keep his dreams alive; But unless the Masked Man could find Cavendish, true justice would never survive

(EIGHTH VERSE, after Tonto is arrested for Collins' murder) I don't guess anyone stopped to ask what Tonto was guilty of; That didn't stop them from wanting to see him swinging high above; But Tonto showed no sign of fear, and he held on to a fervent hope That the Masked Man wouldn't let his blood brother hang from the end of a rope

(NINTH VERSE) Those Cavendish Boys had been working real hard, going over each step of their plan; Meanwhile, ol' Butch was mighty disturbed by reports of a strange Masked Man; But he wouldn't let rumors mess up his scheme, so he set out on his final campaign; He and his Boys rode to their rendezvous with President Grant's private train

(TENTH VERSE) So Cavendish had pulled it off, vanished without firing a shot; The Masked Man and Tonto had to move fast, and ride while his trail was still hot; They didn't know what he intended to do, but the life at stake was President Grant's; Perhaps Butch would hold him, perhaps Butch would kill him...they just couldn't take that chance

(SECOND CHORUS, closing credits) A fiery horse across the plains and he was gone from sight; He changed the course of history as he rode; And folks would tell of one Lone Ranger turning wrong to right; They wondered who, but they never knew...The Man In The Mask

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 October 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

And a fun Michael Horse interview:

Horse starred as Tonto in the 1981 Legend, earning marks as one of the few bright spots in the epic flop.
“I’m glad the movie wasn’t a big success. I was afraid I’d be stuck with that image,” Horse said.

---

When filming began, Horse brought his own dignity and image to the role of Tonto. While he was stepping up the
image of Tonto, the star of the show was bringing down the character of the Lone Ranger. Klinton Spilsbury became
notorious for his lack of cooperation during the shooting.
“One night he got into a fight. Some guard called me at three in the morning to come and get him. I said, ‘whoa, that
faithful companion stuff is only in the movies,’” Horse said.

Sword and the Sorceror rocks gigantic bells. It was the first AA film I saw at the pictures, just before they changed the rating to 15. It featured a 3-pronged sword with flying blades, and some of the goriest deaths I'd ever seen in 1982. I was a big Hawk the Slayer (WHICH DOES NOT BELONG ON THIS LIST) fan anyway, but this is the apotheosis of swords, tits and guts movies.

From the Reagan-era cycle of 1950s nostalgia flicks, this one about American teenagers vacationing (PG-style) in Hawaii in the last days before Hawaii became a state. The tagline, btw, advertises it as being "In the tradition of Stand By Me (well, sure) and Where The Boys Are" (um, huh?).

1960 original or "Where The Boys Are '84" remake, I wonder?

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Monday, 12 August 2013 15:45 (twelve years ago)

somehow this 80s teen-sex-comedy completely passed me by at the time and ever-afterwards until a couple weeks ago. was amazed I'd never even heard of it.

talk about a film flopping just from the title alone...

Who knows. Only seen the '84 one myself, which this is nothing like; Aloha Summer's meager ambition is to be good-for-you, not smutty. Can only assume that they drew the second title for the tagline out of a hat stuffed with movies about teenagers and beaches.

Actually posting about a film that's supposed to be good (seemed like a good thread)...Anyone have any idea how to stream/buy/see John Korty's The Crazy-Quilt (1966)? Not having any luck.

Lol a quote was still in my cache. Anyway, my favorite forgotten movie is 1994’s blatant pandering to Generation X, SFW, with Stephen Dorff’s towering performance as “Spab”.

Coincidentally, both were shown at TIFF in 1994!

The Beaver is one of those things in my brain where I can't remember if it really happened or if it was like some Arrested Development or 30 Rock bit. like this is what he does after saying Third Reich shit on tape

I think no-one but me remembers seminal '80s aussie 'killer bush pig' schlockfest RAZORBACK, sadly.

I'm with yer buddy. Me and my mate loved this movie, and were a bit obsessed with the performance from David Argue.

see i remember that film :(

you know what is absolutely a treasure trove of trailers for forgotten films? old pay tv "coming next" bumpers.

Wednesday Night on HBO: Buffalo Bill and the Indians, Or, Sitting Bull's History Lesson!

Friday Night on HBO: Checkered Flag or Crash! The first story about off-road racing! Joe-Don Baker as Walk-Away Madden! Susan Saren-den as the Reporter! All-time racing great Parnell E. Jones!

Saturday: It's high-speed action and 100 proof adventure with a trio of beautiful bootleggers in a battle with a backwoods syndicate! Susan Howard, William Conrad, and John Saxon star in Moonshine County Express! OK, look, I'm not saying they're not all three beautiful, but that's an _unlikely_-ass trio of beautiful bootleggers.

A circus lion-tamer drops his whip and chair to enter the beefcake parade of a male beauty contest as... The Last Romantic Lover! Next on HBO!

the best ones are the ones from the '70s, NGL. so much B-movie schlock in there.

He's a klutzy cabbie with a show-biz dream and a pet monkey who's memorized a military secret! Robby Benson stars.

8:00 EDT: WHOLLY MOSES

Dudley Moore is Herschel, a simple shepherd who blows his big chance when he tries to put out the burning bush! All-star silliness.

CHAPTER TWO

He's widowed, she's divorced -- and it looks like it's love the second time around! Marsha Mason and James Cann star.

Paris, France - used to be shown late night on Channel 4 in the 90s sometimes, really very strange film which they decided to market as an "Erotic thriller" though it's definitely not that.

I’ve always been kind of curious about this one: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Train_to_Venice

Stars Hugh Grant, Malcolm McDowell, and Kristina Soderbaum, who is best known for playing a series of doomed Aryan heroines in Nazi-era dramas.

The Wikipedia page links to an interview with grant:

HG: I've made some absolute stinkers but the greatest stinker of all
is called Night Train to Venice. It was in my Europudding phase,
directed by an insane German, with me and Raquel Welsh's daughter
starring. And it's a film that has the unique distinction of having
had no release in any medium in the world ever.

JW: Just buried (laughing)
HG: Totally buried, yeah, no videos, nothing. And even after FWAAF
came out they kept coming to Cannes and trying to flog this thing
that I'd made years earlier and still noone will buy it, I mean they
look with interest and say, sorry that is TOO bad.

JW: What do you play in it?

HG: I played a sort of Scottish journalist and I never understood
what the hell was going on - we were chased by neo-Nazis on the
Orient Express and I kept having dreams about Dobermans and, it's a
shocker.

JoeStork, Wednesday, 3 January 2024 23:36 (two years ago)

Paris, France was made in Toronto and had a certain cult success here. I didn't see it but the friend of mine who did also saw Night Train to Venice years ago at some sort of bad movie night, maybe at someone's house, and would confirm that it is terrible. If it never had any release, maybe he knew someone who had a promo video?

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 4 January 2024 17:30 (two years ago)

I think the interview was from a while back, it must be on DVD by now.

Night Train to Venice is, in fact, available on DVD now (Region 2 only though)

I mean, if anyone wants to see it (I am curious based on the wikipedia description)

Travolta had red hair in White Man's Burden, I remember that much

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 4 January 2024 18:48 (two years ago)

I suddenly remembered the forgotten White Man's Burden only because SFW was evoked and I had a Proustian rush back to that night in '96 when I watched the two back-to-back in a vicodin haze. 0/10, would not recommend.
