OK, so you lot with yr fancy-smancy so-called "league" teams might be wondering why i'm starting this thread now, but for those of us who support teams in the Conference, the FA Cup starts on Saturday (clearly if you support Haverhill United, you've already been to five FA cup matches since August, well done you, and them).

Anyway, of particular interest is the match between Exeter City and AFC Wimbledon, apparently the first FA Cup match between two supporter-owned clubs, both much loved around here.

those fourth qualifying round fixtures in full

AFC to win and then face Franchise in the first round proper.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

Jesus, it'd be carnage

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:00 (nineteen years ago)

This is genuinely exciting - AFCW have already won three matches to get this far, haven't they? I think I'd like them to win because of the possibility of a draw against You Know Who in R1.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

i would also love them to face franchise, but not this year please. as our league form has gone missing again a nice run to the third round would be lovely please.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

And for that you need to face Nottingham "Concentrating on the league" Forest in R1.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not keen to face Franchise (even if we beat Exeter, which we won't) because it would cause a potentially nasty schism in the supporter ranks. Obviously we all hate them, but some want to see us thrash them, some want us to pull out of any match against them - there is 100% chance of a really unpleasant (and utterly futile) argument occurring if the unthinkable does happen.

Has the possibility been discussed much down Kingston way?

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yes. It's just the kind of intangible moral quandary that internet message boards get all in a tizzy about :/

The beauty of clubs like Wimbledon SHOULD be in the togetherness of the fanbase, the single voice striving for the good of the team within the community. In practise, we have just as many petty/Macchiavellian/self-interested/ignorant fans as any other team and no matter how the club is run, people CHOOSE to create strife - that's human nature.

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

I was wondering whether Maidenhead versus Merthyr Tydfil would be worth seeing. I have never before seen a football match involving a team froma town mentioned in a Byrds song.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

It lurks like bad smell. Some would take the Northern Cyprus line and, by dint of refusing to recognise them as a league club, would refuse to attend. Others wouldn't want to do something which would see - thanks to gate sharing in cup matches - their cash going to them, and others would go, pinch their nose, and probably cause severe mayhem. This is more analogous to a sicilian blood feud, not a rivalry with degrees of banter ranging from apathy to full on violence between hoolies.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

didn't the youth teams nearly face each other in the youth cup last year?

actually Sunshine, there'll be another twenty-odd non-league clubs (pretty much anyone except the winner of Oxford/Dag & Red) i think we'd rather face than league oppo ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

No Vauxhall Motors no credibility.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

"there'll be another twenty-odd non-league clubs (pretty much anyone except the winner of Oxford/Dag & Red) i think we'd rather face than league oppo ;)"

Clearly you haven't seen our cup "exploits" in recent years...

There was a WSC piece a little while back about something of a divide opening up among the previously united Womble masses, with disagreements about what the club should do next. Someone I know who was vaguely important in Wisa (who shall remain nameless) got all huffy about it and said none of it was true, so it's interesting to hear another side of the story.

Last time I went to an AFC game (Folkestone this season) the only arguements I heard were about whether AFC were actually shit or not, the kind of thing you get at any club.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

Exeter fans - some handy Wimbledon stats for you!

Ryman League Premier Division, AFCW position in terms of:
No. of wins: 7th=
No. of defeats: 2nd
Goals scored: 13th=
Goals conceded: 1st
Goal difference: 3rd
Points: 6th

Cup games: played 6, won 6 (all but one against lower level opposition)

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

The shit will hit the fan if/when we get promoted, when we have to work out what our expectations really are and what steps we'll need to take to achieve them.

The prospect of players becoming full-time is probably the biggest single issue; the problem of falling gates will bite increasingly hard unless it can be reversed (500 more people used to come to watch us in the Combined Counties League, ffs).

The whole (non-)issue of owning Kingsmeadow vs finding a new home in Wimbledon won't go away, despite it being a ridiculous, unattainable pipe dream, because idealistic fans are too dumb or too lazy to understand the virtual impossibility of making it work.

We also will have to face a period at some point where are progress either halts or even reverses (the thought of finishing LOWER than the previous season is one said fans above can't even begin to contemplate). We will have to deal with bigger clubs poaching our best players; increasing costs may necessitate further borrowing, another horribly divisive issue.

So, it's far from all rosy down the meadow (Dave may disagree with some of the above, of course), but it's all a result of success - so far - rather than failure.

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'd agree with much of that Mark - I'd add that due to the goodwill generated by the AFCW thing, there were a good number of non-fans who bought season tickets in a show of solidarity; those didn't renew as one might expect, but despite never attending a match, their purchase still gets added to the gate figure.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

What about Merthyr Tydfil?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 24 October 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

so, for the record, Exeter beat Wimbledon 2-1, and they were all over us for the last 20 miuntes or so, but our second goal from John Challinor was an absolute corker.

Exeter have got another supporter-run club in Stockport County in the first round proper, tie of the round probably Nottingham Forest vs Yeading, although i notice it's not one of the televised matches...

" tie of the round probably Nottingham Forest vs Yeading"

Or, as the Great British Sporting Media took all of 30 seconds to dub it, "Two-time European Cup winners Nottingham Forest vs Yeading."

Honestly, Forest fans always get stick for living in the past, but it's the papers (and Sky, in particular) who go on about the events of the late Seventies and early Eighties more than anyone.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Thursday, 2 November 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

So, I'm a Forest fan (through and through, since day one) and I've seen Forest play quite a bit this season (aswell as previous seasons).

Forest were pretty dire last season (even when they had Ian McParland/Frank Barlow in charge they were dull). However, this season, Forest have been 1000% better. They've been playing like a team challenging for promotion to the premier league at times.

I saw Forest against Yeading. Right...so here's a summary.
Yeading came, like most conference sides, with a speciality in being physical. A few times you might speculate that they had aspirations to kick Forest off the park and maybe sneak a goal and acquire a huge scalp. That's partially honourable - although the style of play from Yeading infuriated me. 5-0 might be considered a little harsh on Yeading; who I must say played as well as some of the teams in the 3rd division (no jokes on Notts County necessary).

I love the fact that conference sides can participate against league sides - it's a great experience and there isn't much gulf in talent really - unless you count Forest being on a ridiculously amazing roll and are pretty much certain for promotion. All credit to Yeading who tried hard.

In response to this board - we as Forest fans don't tend to live in the past. Well, the realistic ones at least. The media loves to build us up for a big fall, and they usually get their way (see Accrington Stanley embarassment) but most of us just want to see the good, exciting football that this team has always been famous for.

The conference should be given more credit, the teams are worthy of League status in most cases. I suspect Yeading would handle themselves to some extent in "Coca Cola League 2", as would many others.

M B M (mbm06), Sunday, 12 November 2006 11:25 (nineteen years ago)

And now we've got Salibury City (away) in round two. Fun, fun.

Couldn't get up to Nottingham on Saturday so went to Brisbane Road to watch County play Orient instead. Midway through the first half, a pint-sized Os fan behind me turned to his dad and said "this is why I normally support Chelsea". Cue half the west stand collapsing into fits of laughter.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Sunday, 12 November 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

If Maidenhead win, they go to Brighton. I doubt they will though. Still, it is exciting. I did not know the manager is the former Yeading manager.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 13 November 2006 08:19 (nineteen years ago)

Congratulations to Milton Keynes and their supporter on not losing away at Farsley Celtic. Cunts.

Hello Sunshine - any reason you go to Dons games? Are you local?

I live in Tooting, so divide my Saturdays between AFC and T&M when I'm not watching Forest or shopping or nursing a hangover.

And I drive past Plough Lane every day when I'm taking the dog to the common, so I have soft spot for the Wombles.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 13 November 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

That's The Greatest Club Cup Compeition In The World (TM) you're talking about...

Meanwhile, as if to prove my point above about the Meeja, here's the first paragraph of the BBC's online write-up of the second-round draw:

"Conference South side Salisbury City have been handed a home tie against former European champions Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup second round."

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Monday, 13 November 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

but they are the only former european champions ever in the first two rounds of the cup, so you can kind of understand it...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 13 November 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

CarsmileSteve couldn't be more right. Although Forest fans will recall how we've never been favoured by the press. And how much did the scousers hate us going and winning their cups? Forest aren't a popular side and the media hype Forest's golry days for 1 reason and 1 reason only...

"Accrington Stanley have put European Cup winners Nottingham Forest out of the League Cup in the 1st round!"

Salisbury...bloody hell. My dad's not as sharp as he once was. He though it was Sainsburys. Not disrespect to Salisbury, intended. My girlfriends a Notts County girl. She's seen more Forest matches though (such as the 7-1 demolition of Swindon and the 5-0 recent fun of Yeading). They were blabbing on about dumping Middlesborough, Southampton and Palace out the cup and how they wish they'd of got Man Utd. Wycombe deserved to beat them, completely underestimated the tie. Jermaine Easter looked allright. Give him a few years and who knows.

In the meantime could I tempt any supporters to pressure their club into buying one Neil Harris?

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

What really grinds my gears, right, no offence to the welsh, but why the hell should Cardiff be allowed to play in the English league? And Swansea. And what is the point...Those two teams would most likely be top of their table almost every year and therefore challenging in Europe (making money). Cardiff & Swansea would be the Celtic & Rangers of Wales. Yet every so often I have to attend a football match in the English divisions and hear "WAAALLLESSS!". Yuk.

Hmm, yeah, Neil Harris is somewhat useless. He gets stuck in. But then again, so do the grounds keepers, and one of them got a job at the new wembley.

M B M (mbm06), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

Presumably they make money playing in the English leagues week-in week-out which are a lot better attended than any games in the Welsh league. Also, chances of progressing past a not-very-money-spinning trip to some far-flung Eastern European team to gain even a remote chance of a decent team in Europe v chance of drawing a big club in the FA Cup = better overall odds, just about.

Presumably Dave B is better placed to answer this.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

See also Newport and Wrexham.

Actually, don't. They're both shitholes.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks Ailsa.

My point remains. This is the English league -- get them buggers out. Weren't people speculating that Celtic might join the English league? They'd be quite a good Coca-Cola Championship side. Or they'd be a nice easy game for any premiership side - probably even for teams such as Watford. Or am I being harsh?

Maybe Wrexham should buy Neil Harris.

M B M (mbm06), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

I beleive they were in the English leagues long before the Welsh league (is it still the Konica League of Wales?) ever existed, and I suppose it could easily be justified on historical grounds, much like the very existence of individual FAs in one nation, etc, etc.

Anyway, I'm chuffed to bits that they're in.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, you are being harsh. Celtic's last competitive games against English opposition:

Man Utd at Old Trafford this year (Champions League) 3-2, Man Utd's three goals being a soft penalty and two errors by Thomas Gravesen. Return leg next Tuesday.

UEFA Cup 2002/03: beat Blackburn 1-0 at Celtic Park and 2-0 at Ewood Park. Drew 1-1 with Liverpool at Celtic Park, beat them 2-0 at Anfield.

Hardly the stuff of whipping boys.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

So Exeter's recent record at Old Trafford is better than Celtic's, yes?

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

(My feeling, for what it's worth, is that Celtic as they stand would be upper mid-table in what people outside England seem to call the EPL, but that after a few years of the additional revenue they would be up at the top end. Cup football's not generally a very good measure of league performance.)

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

My understanding is that the league agressively expanded in three stages - turn of century, early 20s and again in the 50s. It had various strategic imperatives (the main one was heading off Rugby League, hence the presence of many smaller town Northern clubs who have consistently struggled, and strength of the sourth amateur game vs the northern one as the biggest Northern amateurs were cherry-picked). At the same time, there was no UEFA to insist of territorial integrity, and none of the home associations were in FIFA, who didn't have regulatory functions here anyway.

So, they came in because they were big clubs in big cities on the Mainland, and because the surrounding teams in Welsh terms made a much lesser league. It was a no-brainer for the Welsh clubs, good business for the other clubs, and as they competed in the Welsh Cup, the FA of Wales would have been completely sanguine as it made no odds to them.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

I'd have to agree with the "don't judge by cups" comment with Celtic or Rangers. Scottish football isn't as fluent as teams such as Man Utd, Chelsea etc. Ok fine even Portsmouth if we're going to have fun on the matter.

The coca-cola championship comment was a little harsh. I'd suggest Celtic to be a top 6 side or round about pushing for the Uefa Cup - spots which teams like Newcastle/Tottenham consistently waste. Rangers I wouldn't expect to push past 7th or 8th. Hearts i'd of thought would hang around the bottom of the table. All welsh sides would be relegation material. And if Leicester ever get back into the premiership they should both start with 20point deductions for being who they are! =D

Anybody think Chelsea look better? Lampard's goal against Barca...weheyy eh? I despise Barcelona! And AC Milan. I think Kaka should come to the premiership! With Chelsea or Arsenal preferably.

Thoughts, anyone?

M B M (mbm06), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

I'm only judging by cups because I have little else to go on. How many teams are going to be in your hypothetical Premiership?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

We can also go on the evidence of our eyes, and of where players come from / end up, but obviously it can only be guesswork.

I very much hope it stays as guesswork too, a combined league would be bad but not as bad as accepting a couple of Scottish clubs into the English league. That would suck mightily.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

Tim OTM (earlier): Celtic and Rangers would soon establish themselves at the top end of the Premier League. It's not really relevant how good they are now. In terms of matchgoing support support they're ahead of almost every club in England, and in terms of 'passive' armchair support they're probably well ahead of most teams in the Premier League (I would say only Man Utd and Liverpool have definitely got a bigger fanbase). If they were let in to the Premier League they would immediately be able to attract better players and I reckon they would be getting into Europe within a couple of seasons. Having said that, I don't think any other Scottish club would last even one season in the top flight.

Sir Tehrance HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

Why wouldn't Celtic and Rangers be Newcastle, Everton, Villa, or even Wolves, Sheffield Wednesday or Nottingham Forest? I think it'd take a few years of consolidation before they're a "big five" club, to use an obsolete phrase.

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

Because they're much bigger than any of those clubs.

Sir Tehrance HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

I suppose if Celtic, for example, were in the Premier League they would attract better players. However, they'd need a few years to become accustomed to life in the English league surely you must agree? I'd say Celtic would need about 3 to 5 seasons before they really started getting good.

The obvious speculation, too, is that they'd have to start from the bottom of the English leagues...they'd never stroll straight into the top flight!!!

M B M (mbm06), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

I think a European Super League is more likely.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

Perhaps one of the Premiership also-rans can play in the SPL? A sort of rotating secondment.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

An english team in the SPL...That's difficult! Would they

a) Be alot fitter and creative, therefore having somewhat "a walk in the park" against any of the teams other than Hearts, Rangers and Celtic?
b) Struggle with the physical, dogged style and be frustrated/kicked off the park so to speak?

A european super league? Is that not The Champions League essentially? Or do you mean a full season as opposed to a limited period?

M B M (mbm06), Thursday, 16 November 2006 07:52 (nineteen years ago)

Speaking of Welsh teams in the premiership . . .

A few years ago when there was a lot of noise being made about Rangers/Celtic joining the Premiership, UEFA stepped in and said that the Scottish clubs wouldn't be able to play in Europe if they did join, because they'd have qualified for Europe through a league other than the one governed by their FA. Using that rationale, does that mean that Cardiff (who look like they'll be in the Premiership next season) can't qualify for Europe either?

Hi There! Dear Johnney B (stigoftdump), Thursday, 16 November 2006 08:27 (nineteen years ago)

I mean a full season, yes, without the distraction of domestic competition against "lesser" teams.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 16 November 2006 09:25 (nineteen years ago)

MBM, I think you are under-estimating the other teams in the SPL. Celtic, Rangers and Hearts do not win every game, and there's not really such a thing as "a walk in the park" in the SPL - just ask Paul Le Guen. The other teams, from what I've seen of them (i.e. when they've played Celtic - I think Hibs v Hearts and St Mirren v Rangers are the only games I've watched this season not involving Celtic), try to play with skill, flair and without clogging (Dunfermline excepted, fucking 10-men-behind-the-ball boring bastards). Hibs in particular are an excellent footballing side.

Also, which sort of English team are you talking about that's going to stroll up here and show us hairy-arsed Highlanders how football's really played? Newcastle? Aston Villa? West Brom? Because I'm pretty sure Souness (OK, I know he's not there any more), O'Neill and Mowbray learned a thing or two up here in our shitty, not-proper-football wee league.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 16 November 2006 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

Interesting issue with Cardiff; as I understand it, they wouldn't be able to qualify for Europe, as the places in Europe are the places allocated to the English FA, of whom Cardiff City are not members, so they'd struggle - Celtic and Rangers best chance of getting a change is to pump money into Cardiff and get them to win the Carling Cup. maybe they're behind the hedge funds who've bought it.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 16 November 2006 11:19 (nineteen years ago)

Souness learnt that it's a lot easier to manage Rangers than Liverpool, Southampton, Blackburn or Newcastle; O'Neill learnt how to manage in England before picking up some medals at Celtic and then returning home for a proper challenge; I'm not sure Tony Mowbray has really brought much to the English league yet.

Seriously though Ailsa, which English teams do Hearts and Hibs best compare to? Are they West Ham level? Middlesbrough? Charlton? It's always been very hard to discern the quality of Scottish football from down here.

Pete W (peterw), Thursday, 16 November 2006 11:43 (nineteen years ago)

O'Neill learnt how to manage in England before picking up some medals at Celtic and then returning home for a proper challenge

!!!!!!!!!!!! Nice summary :-D

I have no idea which English teams Hibs and Hearts compare to, as I haven't really been paying much attention to the Premiership this season or most of last. Sorry.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 16 November 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

re: Cardiff & Swansea would be the Celtic & Rangers of Wales.

Don't be stoopid in comparative terms imagine Birmingham City [or any current top 6 championship club] and say Bristol City playing in a league of the standard of Conference North / South [as that is about the equivalent standard of football of the League of Wales]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 16 November 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently Jon Arne Riise is annoyed with Pepe Reina because he's given up on Liverpools hopes of winning the premiership. At least the balding Spaniard is realistic. Liverpool winning the Premiership, gawd. I'd probably say the main runners are Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal. That Rosicky is pretty good isn't he?

FANS OF CONFERENCE FOOTBALL -- Who will be joining League 2 this season?

M B M (mbm06), Friday, 17 November 2006 11:02 (nineteen years ago)

For Premiership talk, you want this amusingly non-prophetic thread: Liverpool will win the premiership 2006/07

For lower English league stuff: Come anticipate the COCA COLA CHAMPIONSHIP, Leagues 1 & 2, Conference, Hellenic, Miverva Spartan etc. 2006/07 !

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 17 November 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

I'd probably say the main runners are Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

That's sticking your neck out quite a bit. I predict Britain's next Prime Minister is quite likely to come from the Labour party or the Conservatives, but let's not rule out the plucky Lib Dems either.

I hope Salisbury lose their FA cup tie. In fact, I hope they lose every game for the rest of the year. And yes, I'm a Salisbury resident. I live in Partridge Way and have to put up with the misery of fans cars parked all over the pavements and grass because they're too tight to support their club with the £1 parking fee. It is impossible to get into driveways when the games are on now. A reliable source tells me that the clubs attitiude is to pass the problem over to the residents to complain. So much for comunity spirit from our local club then. Come on Salisbury, "LOSE".

" former European Cup winners Nottingham Forest "

Is this actually their official name now?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 17 November 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

...like how when Eusebio was at Celtic Park for the Champs League game against Benfica and the announcer referred to him as "The Legendary Eusebio" about 800 times.

£1 parking fee?!?!?! Whaaaat!!! Yes please. We have to pay £4/5!

Hmm. I'm not 100% clued up on the conference and the logistics. What would have to happen for Hucknall to be inducted into the league, then?

Haha, if you're media and want to build up Forest for a fall, then you will focus on the European Cup exploits consistently. If you're an impartial, fair observer you'll be saying things such as "Nottingham Forest seem to be getting to grips with the reality of 2006, sitting pretty at the top of the old English 2nd Division. They're playing some good football but there's always room for improvement. However, the club is debt-free courtesy of Nigel Doughty, and David Platt is currently unemployed. Things are progressing well, afterall."

Do you think Charlton were harsh on Dowie? I don't. I feel sorry for Dowie in the respect that he's going through alot, but to be fair it is self-inflicted so I'm not sure how to feel, really. Crystal Palace are justified to feel kicked in the teeth. Well, at least it's swings and roundabouts now.

M B M (mbm06), Friday, 17 November 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

What part of "For Premiership talk, you want this amusingly non-prophetic thread Liverpool will win the premiership 2006/07" are you struggling with? Dowie's been discussed over there.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 November 2006 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

God forbid anybody trying to make conversation eh?

Are Salisbury actually any good?

Bump.

I know its all the magic and all that, but Tamworth in the pissing rain looks like a depressing place to be right now.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 6 January 2007 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder if us beating Notts Forest counts as a giant-killing. They've won the European Cup, y'know...

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Saturday, 6 January 2007 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

i think Charlton will cling on for a plucky victory

reverto levidensis (blueski), Saturday, 6 January 2007 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

We'll probably be below them in the Championship this time next year anyway.

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Saturday, 6 January 2007 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

Giant-killing predictions:

Brum to beat Newcastle
Forest to embarrass Charlton
Leicester might at least take Fulham to a replay. Ditto Cardiff and Spurs.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 6 January 2007 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

Too many Premiership v Premiership ties this year. FA Cup points count in my other Fantasy League and I'm used to a few players scoring very highly for me by whacking a load in against lower-league opposition.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 6 January 2007 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

Brum have taken the lead...

Either that, or I hope Forest score 5. Either way, romance will be dead. And certain players may never play for us again.

...gone 2-0 up against Spurs and lost 4-2
...lost to Walsall, 2-1
...LOST 3-2 TO GILLINGHAM

There you have it, gentlemen. Today is up there with the lot, however.

Interesting thing with Alonso there. Looked like a dive but was he just leaping to avoid the challenge but then getting caught slightly but enough to force him down anyway?

reverto levidensis (blueski), Saturday, 6 January 2007 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

Challenge was late but was contact. Should have been a pen.

Zoe Espera (Espera), Saturday, 6 January 2007 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

No, Lawrenson was right. He was diving long before there was contact.

Sir Tehrance HoBB (the pirate king), Saturday, 6 January 2007 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

I'd assumed the protest was because Kelvin Mackenzie was in or near Anfield this afternoon? Has he said something else recently that I wasn't aware of?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 6 January 2007 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

He was quoted last year (dunno when) of saying that he wasn't sorry about the Sun stories after all.

Zoe Espera (Espera), Saturday, 6 January 2007 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

But that is all I know and is probably what everyone already knows. Am a bit out of the loop.

Zoe Espera (Espera), Saturday, 6 January 2007 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

I think the reason for the protest is that the BBC invited him to take part in some kind of Christmas Day broadcast (but backed down under pressure), after he'd made these comments.

Sir Tehrance HoBB (the pirate king), Saturday, 6 January 2007 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

BBC sound keeps picking up fans hurling abuse (think i heard "Eboue yer wanker" earlier) ha ha

reverto levidensis (blueski), Saturday, 6 January 2007 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

Kelvin Mackenzie was on Any Questions last year saying that all teenagers who got into difficulties when drunk should be left to themselves, and if that meant left to die, well fair enough.

YOU DECIDE

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Saturday, 6 January 2007 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

should not have gotten a yellow card for that. no PK awarded, fair enough, but I don't think it was quite so bad as to deserve a card.

whatever. arsenal's front was making neat balls all over the goddam place, and liverpool sorta looked like chumps whenever they got near goal. clever ball by kuyt, though

"He scored on his debut just like he did for Sweden all those years ago."

Let's just draw a veil over his debut for Celtic, shall we? (oh, OK, he executed the worst passback ever resulting in a goal for Hibs. We all thought we'd signed another useless numpty)

Some of the worst goalkeeping I ever saw there.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 7 January 2007 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

I had the Man U-Villa game on Five Live, through the telly. I didn't even think to check, y'know, actually TV. Is it true that Larsson has accumulated transfer fees of less than £1m in his career? I guess only Feyenoord and Celtic actually paid anything for him.

Anyone who mentions events at Goodison is dead.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 7 January 2007 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

I believe that probably is true. Possibly Helsingborg may have paid a small fee at the start of his career, but even that would keep him under £1m.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 7 January 2007 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

larsson still a class act, hopefully they can persuade him to stay until the end of the season.

i enjoyed the pool arsenal game yesterday, too, rosicky's goals were tremendous. pool may have to face a trophyless season, this time out, wot with arsenal and barce lying in wait in the other two cups...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 7 January 2007 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Rosicky can fair skelp a shot, can't he? I only watched the first half due to rumbly tum and need to go and eat food rather than sit in pub, but it was entertaining stuff.

Larsson will not stay, he's only playing because it's the Swedish close season. He's shown himself to be pretty much a man of principle, and if Celtic couldn't persuade him to stay when his self-decided time was up, and Barcelona couldn't persuade him to stay even after he helped them to the Champions League because he wanted to go back home, then I doubt Man Utd will change his mind.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 7 January 2007 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

It was fun at the Lane this evening, a big cheer went up every time a Birmingham goal was announced. As time went on this was mingled with a sort of horror and disgust that the exact same team that beat us at White Hart Lane was being pummelled 5-1 by Birmingham.

Everyone played well for Spurs tonight, but Cardiff had nothing to give really. I've never been at a match with that many police though.

I enjoyed Mourinho laughing at Shevchenko getting legged up, even if it probably was clever editing by the BBC. I also enjoyed Morurinho's interview on the BBC (heard it on Radio 4 this morning) which was an absolute masterclass in readability between the lines .

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 29 January 2007 10:42 (nineteen years ago)

Jose admits he was laughing at Shev. He's just going out of his way to piss Roman off now. What did he say on Radio 4 - was it all the stuff about having a contract till 2010 (aka, where's my pay off you Russian bastard?).

Mourinho said: "I found it funny because the left-back was kicking people and ready to fight everybody. I told Steve Clarke 'he will kill him' and before I'd finished he did. Yes, funny."

Pete W (peterw), Monday, 29 January 2007 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

that's been edited. there was a huge pause between his 'yes' and his 'funny' originally, with a gulp of Cognaic and a puff of cigar between.

vita susicivus (blueski), Monday, 29 January 2007 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

The bit on Radio 4 was along the lines of "Roman is always welcome in our dressing room, he hasn't been to London for some time, because he is busy or has something he prefers to do", things like that. They presented it at face value, rather than playing it for laughs.

I noticed his shirt now says "Gamst" rather than "Pedersen" - they should go with "Gamst Pedersen" to get the extra lettering charges.

(I think this is why Celtic bought Jan VENNEGOOR OF HESSELINK after the move for Jimmy FLOYD HASSELBAINK fell through)

Another boring draw

More of the same for Chelsea. More of the same for Man Utd. More of the same for Arsenal (if they get there).

Preston v Man City could be entertaining. That's about it though. I had a feeling we'd get Fulham.

I'm not sure we can produce another decent performance against Arsenal, even at the Reebok.

Wish Chelsea and Man United would have some real competition.

Even if we beat Arsenal, we'd lose to Blackburn anyway, simply because we really shouldn't.
