Nothing exciting, please!

Abbott, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

I hell of saw a small snail today.

Abbott, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

It's garbage day.

Abbott, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

Haha.

jaymc, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

nearly out of contact lense solution

gbx, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

The paint on the windowsills has dried. A while ago, I notice. A looong while ago.

t**t, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

I bought the following pet supplies earlier:

- 5 lb. bag of "Timothy Complete" guinea pig food
- Hay trough for guinea pig
- Goldfish tank cleaning pump
- New food bowl for second guinea pig
- Loach food

Abbott, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'll change the litter box later, actually. Since you brought pets up. Thanks!

Clay, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

I could really do with a shave

Matt, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

I had some tasty thai fried rice for lunch today.

Jaq, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

I meant to call up for a haircut today and I forgot! There's still time, though!

Clay, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

The world "loach" might be a bit for this thread. Yellow card.

Will M., Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

Oh someone broke one of the windows in my car the other day and the glass dude came out this afternoon to replace it and that was pretty much more expensive than I figured. Is this too exciting, though? (It has a criminal element.)

Clay, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

don't push it.

gbx, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

'xactly!
Will M's "yellow card" talk seemed criminally close to interesting also.

t**t, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

im hungry

jhøshea, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

xposts.

My car window EXPLODEDED the other day from the heat, it was fucked.

W4LTER, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

Please take that talk elsewhere.

Clay, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

What do you guys think about hamburgers? They're still pretty good IMO.

Clay, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

Still pregnant. It feels like 9 decades now.

stevienixed, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

i think i have 1 beer in my fridge - i might drink it if its really there

jhøshea, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

oh hey there is one beer in my fridge right now but i think it's my roommates?

gbx, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

stealing that beer: too exciting?

gbx, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

i ran into my old boss today

max, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

max, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

i, whereas, did like the two beers i had today. (light "a.le coq"-s they were too ...oh, sorry, that last bit might look slightly interesting)

t**t, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

i think i have 1 beer in my fridge

shit, i've known the beer content of my fridge in minute detail for far too long now.

whatever, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

I am full.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

I'm thinking of maybe having a bottle of water, though.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

and i know for a fact it's beer-empty right now...

whatever, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

stevie, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

W4LTER, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

good work

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

After work I walked home. It had stopped raining and there were many wet leaves on the ground, mostly maple and mostly a dull yellow. I saw a couple of crows. A dog barked at me, but didn't bother to get up from lying down on the porch while it barked.

Aimless, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 00:17 (eighteen years ago)

My husband is watching tennis on the Tennis Channel because I'm not in the livingroom to change the channel to the playoffs, and last we knew fucking doe-eyed luscious-lipped Grady Sizemore had stolen a base! Thus is the lure of ILE. Must go.

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)

I really hate writing.

Laurel, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)

That was too exciting, re: Grady. Sorry.

W4LTER, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

There are warm cookies where I work.

We give them out to people as they check in.

But I have eaten far too many over the 2 years I've worked here.

I probably will never want another one again.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 00:52 (eighteen years ago)

Do you work at the Doubletree?

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 00:54 (eighteen years ago)

I do.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 00:54 (eighteen years ago)

And I am totally eating a cookie now.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 00:54 (eighteen years ago)

Those cookies are the bomb. Do you work at the Doubletree on the Charles in Boston?

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 00:55 (eighteen years ago)

I like bland crackers, there is an abundance at my work (that's not what we get for lunch, but i liek that shit all the same)

(with avocado, or just on their own)

W4LTER, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 00:55 (eighteen years ago)

We used to stay at that Doubletree all the time.
I love ship's biscuits

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 00:57 (eighteen years ago)

I work at the Doubletree off MLK in Austin.

Oilyrags came to visit me the other night.

We talked about jazz. It was cool.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

You are in Austin! Cool. We're making vague plans for a Southwestern trip. All may be off, however, because of the extensive rot in our house sills. Oh sadness. Not boring. Just trajik.

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:01 (eighteen years ago)

There were shelf-fungus growing under our corner trim-boards.

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:02 (eighteen years ago)

You guys come, I get you "Friends & Family Rate"

I can make no promises about shelf-fungus, though.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

I will email you if it looks like it might actually happen. Money is the issue, wouldn't you know. We keep getting these monster credit card bills. I feel persecuted.

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

I sympathize.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

I finished tomorrow's daily blah blah for our portal page.
then I packed a bunch of stuff in boxes. why is packing stuff in boxes always so totally depressing? nostalgia=bullshit

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

Burn the boxes.

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:22 (eighteen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

no, compost.

5 different teas! $3!!!!!

Abbott, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

more than this?

kenan, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

I don't understand why I never hand-washed my clothes and hung them on a rack in the tub when I lived in apartments. Laundromats are so awful. Always some heavy-breathing perve hanging out.

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

My job is so boring it's like my brain shuts off when I sit down. I go into work with good intentions for my productivity, but by the time I've finished my first cup of coffee I am mindless.

Laurel, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

I am interested in this tea place. But, I am in LA for a few more days. Is it in Seattle?

Jaq, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

oh beth, i do that. in fact i should hand-wash some underwear tonight or i will be all "uh oh" later in the week.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

Tea is pretty much good.

Handwashing is apparently not Good Enough for those art snots in Sonic Youth.

Abbott, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

I did used to turn underwear inside-out for a second day of wear.

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

No, sorry, it's in St Paul. There's always the Crumpet Shop in Seattle, which will refill your tea all day.

clotpoll, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

Thank you, you just reminded me to soak some bras tonight.

Laurel, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:39 (eighteen years ago)

I agree that those hats are lame.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:39 (eighteen years ago)

oh why did i never think of that?

tonight i made a chicken breast to eat with leftover caesar salad. i tried to call my mom, but got the voicemail.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:39 (eighteen years ago)

Those hats are lame. And almost boring. No, entirely.

Abbott, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:39 (eighteen years ago)

she turns off her cell phone when she isn't making a call because she's afraid the battery will run out! oh, moms.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

I really like pillows.

Abbott, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:41 (eighteen years ago)

did you mean to post that on the breast augmentation thread?

kenan, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:43 (eighteen years ago)

I watched the Matt Lauer interview with heterosexual senator Larry Craig on NBC tonight. Not only was pretty much everything that came out of Craig's mouth utter applesauce, but he is terrible at lying, to boot. I must confess though that I'm still unsure as to whether his wife is in complete denial or is lying her pants off as well.

dell, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

I bought two new pillows, because there were these two pillows on our bed that we both hated, Why put up with that? The new pillows were expensive, though. Fucking down.

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

My feelings for down pillows are probably too...intense for this thread.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:48 (eighteen years ago)

Can you roll around decently on those? What grade would you give them?

Abbott, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

I'm tempted by the idea of a core of memory foam + an outer layer of down. I'm sure someone makes such a thing, also that I cannot afford it.

Laurel, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

You could just staple a bunch of down pillows to a memory foam pillow.

Abbott, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:51 (eighteen years ago)

My bed now is comprised of conventional foam topped with a memory-foam pad AND a feather bed. I love the support of the foam, but it doesn't breath well in hot, humid weather. You get all clammy in bed. The feather bed provides some air circulation.

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:52 (eighteen years ago)

Also I started what is probably my silliest poll yet a few minutes ago.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

I was torn by that poll Oilyrags. Which to choose? I like them both, now.

Did your feet affect the poll?

Not as far as I can determine.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 03:56 (eighteen years ago)

About a year ago, I decided I would find a topic with no wikipedia page and start one, just so I could say I did (this is the first time I've ever said so, as it happens.) I chose a topic about which there is very little to say.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pull_switch

Today I checked it to see if it was still there. It is, and has been edited a number of times, but was marked as orphaned, so I've spent the last few minutes linking other articles to it, so my glorious exploration of the subject of pull switches would not disappear.

What I don't get is 'medium sliced bread'. It's too thin to be described as medium, and there's no thin cut option anyway. Why don't they make medium the slim cut, thick, the medium cut and have an extra thick, 'door-wedge' thick cut?

James Watson, respected scientist, holds forth on ornithology

"I think at sort of a young age I began looking at sort of ornithographical magazines, so I became aware of...of science through people interested in birds, and particularly bird behavior. Because the migration of birds was the thing with which you were dominated. Some birds came through in the spring, and in the fall, and in the winter you saw another collection of ducks"

I like all these boots. What is vegetable leather??

KitCat, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

First you take a lot of carrots...

Laurel, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

Wikipedia delivers the goods:

Vegetable-tanned leather is tanned using tannin (hence the name "tanning") and other ingredients found in vegetable matter, tree bark, and other such sources. It is supple and brown in color, with the exact shade depending on the mix of chemicals and the color of the skin. Vegetable-tanned leather is not stable in water; it tends to discolor, and if left to soak and then dry it will shrink and become less supple and harder. In hot water, it will shrink drastically and partly gelatinise, becoming rigid and eventually brittle. Boiled leather is an example of this where the leather has been hardened by being immersed in hot water, or in boiled wax or similar substances. Historically, it was used as armour due to its hardness and light weight, but it has also been used for book binding. This is the only form of leather suitable for use in leather carving or stamping.

We are told that Napoleon was partial to this cheese and ate it with Chambertin wine. It was very popular in the early part of the twentieth century but disappeared during the second world war. It was only in 1946 that two local Bourguignon families started to produce it. The well known Epicurean Brillat Savarin called it the King of cheeses. Many people consider it one of the most interesting French cheeses. It is often compared to the character of two well known French historic personalities, the Epoisses has the force of Charles le Temeraire and the sensibility of Madame de Sevigne.

The cheese has a powerful rich flavour with a pungent smell; the pate, a mouth watering taste of sweet, salty and creamy milk flavours.
The pate is fine textured. The rind is regularly washed in Marc, this adds to its complexity and fascinating taste.

i rode the metro home. my favourite thing about riding the metro/subway is how mundane it usually is. urban mundane.

Mundanity is very soothing in the proper doses.

i walked my dog. it was cool and breezy out and much more comfortable than it has been lately.

i watched planes taking off for north america, and planes landing from australia and asia. it made me feel kind of bad like gbx's beers.

my dog pooped in a dark area of the park. i had to use my cell phone to locate it. she was ready to head home before i was.

gr8080, Thursday, 18 October 2007 07:57 (eighteen years ago)

my dog and i also went for a walk and then we also came home and then we also both drank some water. however i think we should not characterise any of this simultaneity as weird because it might make us a bit too excited.

Over time, do most writers peel away layers of artifice from their voice? Early precociousness then a paring away of each inessential layer? Or is the opposite model just as common? And can poor writers just not peel?

youn, Friday, 19 October 2007 03:54 (eighteen years ago)

If you watch a band from the side of the stage, you get a better sense of the band dynamics than you would watching from the front.

Also, drummers often make an interesting contribution that is overlooked.

Also, I am increasingly convinced that most drummers are just too loud. Power is important, but control is more so. Deftness.

El Tomboto, Friday, 19 October 2007 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

youn I think the best writers rarely saddling themselves with all that junk in the first place, I think they get better with practice, but that is not the same as peeling away useless flourishes or what you might call artifice. being truly concise, one line after another, also takes some cunning that you only get from experience

i think i am getting a cold. i'm deciding whether to stay in all day and night eating soup and reading magazines and listening to broken social scene and radiohead, or if i should go out with friends for cake and tea and then to see sam isaac supporting edwyn collins at dingwalls.

i mean, at least dingwalls won't be all smoky.

and if i want soup i'm gonna have to leave the house soon anyway to buy veggies. and it's raining.

i mustn't get ill, i don't have a night off again until... i dunno, a week today i think.

but if i stay in maybe i can give ulysses another go (read it once, 12 years ago, was re-inspired by walking around dublin with the pinefox). (oops, was that too exciting?)

SHOCKING THE ACER ARENA (get bent), Saturday, 21 July 2012 04:33 (thirteen years ago)

While washing the dishes, I found myself thinking about a cormorant. It may have been the bird that was foremost in my mind, or it may just have been the word. I was scrubbing the saucepan with wire wool.

"Cormorant" is a pretty word, reminding me of "celebrant" and "supplicant" and "cor blimey". The exemplary phrase "Cor blimey, the celebrant murdered the supplicant!" brought the image of killer cormorants into my mind, dressed in dog collars like men of God, perhaps as a disguise to fox the police. I was by now removing tea stains from a tea cup.

For some reason, the word "cormorant" also made me think of the word "ptarmigan", although there is no connection between them except that they are both birds. Sorry, I mean, rather, that they are both words. And both have nine letters. The proposition "cormorants often murder ptarmigans" flashed into my head at this point. I was removing butter from the blade of a butter knife.

"Ptarmigan" in turn made me think of "pterodactyl" and "Michigan" and "tarnish", as in the sentence: "A pterodactyl flapped into Michigan, tarnished by murder most foul!" At that point I began thinking about dactylography, which in English is the scientific study of fingerprints, but in French means simply typing. As in "the murdered french typist exchanged dactylographie for dactylography". At that moment I was scrubbing a slow yellow yolk-smear from an egg-cup.

Finally, an Elvis Costello line popped into my head: She's filing her nails as they drag in the lake. Listening to that song, I always wondered how she could file her nails underwater. Then suddenly I realized that "they" didn't refer to her nails, but to policemen. But how was she managing to file policemen underwater?

The murky dish slops were just at that moment disappearing from the bottom of my sink with the gurgling sound blood makes in a murder mystery.

six months pass...

I put about four hundred quid of work into the skoda last week, suspension, belts, fixing odds and ends like radio connections and a windscreen leak and whatnot. Hoping that the engine lasts well enough so that it makes this maintenance worthwhile, but then there's a timing kit refit in the next 10k km and the cost of tax added to that, if i sat down and added it up, idk, maybe i dont need a car for living in dublin, have a bike and a transport card....

otoh the engine model (vw 1.9 tdi alh) is a famous beast for longevity, and the suspension work (whole new front end, shocks, droplinks, wishbones, the works) made an immediate difference, plus the mechanic is an old friend who i dont catch up with enough and island mechanics with two preschoolers need old friends with old cars and iirc having a sturdy diesel and keeping it in good nick is as environmentally sound as any other method of driving (cue iatee) and ms mac loves an impromptu random spin and there's plenty of forest and coast in range, also the train out west is a joke and too expensive to be a funny one so.....idk
