Kodiak, Janet, and Kira. SO CUTE.
― ENBB, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 19:50 (eighteen years ago)
hallelujah!
For all the feline fans, the BISSELL KITTY HALF-TIME SHOW is back! The lively kittens show off their moves on a glittery stage and chase each other around the field. Tom Petty's performance has nothing on these tiny tabbies and cuddly calicos which prove that watching curious kittens batting around a toy mouse is all the entertainment you need. It's the pick of the litter for halftime shows!
― molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 19:51 (eighteen years ago)
xpost really? i thought that went on way too long last year

and COLT!!!
Yeah, I thought so too but I don't like cats so figured that was why.
― ENBB, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 19:52 (eighteen years ago)
i thought it was hilarious! the kitties totally didn't get along. lots of hissing. NB i have 3 cats (me = cuckoo), and 2 don't get a long, so it was sort of a "better you than me, sucka" situation.
also, i want to kiss this puppy on the head:

two things i'm not looking forward to: kitty halftime (yawn) and the deluge of abused animal commercials apl runs during the whole program. i have to leave the room or else i get depressed and tearful.

I can't watch "Animal Precinct" anymore. The show ends with me summoning my cats to the couch while I sob and proclaim, "I'll never turn you out!"
― molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:36 (eighteen years ago)
all of those animal police shows are bad news. and that new one about the "last chance" rehabilitation facility/shelter? i started tearing up during the credits (the credits!) and banned myself from watching it.
― lauren, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:38 (eighteen years ago)
whenever animal cops has some heartbreaking rescue that ends with "the animals were feral and had to be euthanised" i get really upset.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:39 (eighteen years ago)
omg. I haven't seen that one yet, thank God. xpost.
― ENBB, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:40 (eighteen years ago)
in the only animal rescue show i watched, horatio (great dane found running wild) had to be euthanized at the end bcz he was too aggressive. the camera showed him going into the kill room! that was my first and last experience with that genre.
― lauren, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:42 (eighteen years ago)
ok, i should stop being such a downer on the puppy bowl thread. yay puppies!
― lauren, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:44 (eighteen years ago)
I used to volunteer at a city animal shelter, and I magically didn't adopt any pets while I was there. I don't know how I did it. I have one really sad story, which I will refrain from telling. But, I will tell you that when these two older cats that came in together (older cats generally didn't get adopted) got adopted by this cute couple, all the cat volunteers cheered and teared up a bit. It was great!

― lauren, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 20:55 (eighteen years ago)
bell, i think it depends on the shelter. i know some places like to make sure your housing situation is up to snuff first (not saying that yours isn't, obv., but i've seen some whack regulations like "must own residence"). i think, though, it varies from place to place.
i completely, 100% recommend volunteering at a shelter. dog-walking and socializing was the best! i grew up with a schnauzer, and was used to smaller to medium breeds. it was a little bit of a leap, but i started walking the bigger dogs at the city shelter, and almost came home with a pitbull mix named walter. he was the coolest dog. he got adopted by a family w/ a yard, so it was all good.

― Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:29 (eighteen years ago)
as the person on morning (6am) and afternoon (3-4 pm) poop duty in chicago in the winter, i would say yes.
― La Lechera, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:32 (eighteen years ago)
but it's not so bad. i think rain is way worse than snow. picking up the poop is no big deal.
in fact, i'm about to walk these mutts right now.
― La Lechera, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:33 (eighteen years ago)
picking up poop vs cleaning cat box
― Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:35 (eighteen years ago)
cleaning cat box is really easy when you have awesoem litter. i am in love with fresh step so much that mr. pike has renamed biff "DJ FRESH STEP".
― molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:37 (eighteen years ago)
generally, you just scoop the poop up with a trowel or a scooper and you're done. emptying out a big box filled with shit and urine-soaked clumps is way worse, imo. having to look after two giant cats who pooped about 9 times a day traumatized me.
― lauren, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:37 (eighteen years ago)
i will never go back to other brands. /end free advertising
at least with the shitbox you don't have to go outside in the winter or carry a bag of poop with you. the box gets taken care of in 5 minutes.
i can't remember what kind of litter i use, it's the stuff in the orange boxes? my friends got some hippie shit that you're supposed to flush down the toilet.
― Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:40 (eighteen years ago)
the crystal cat litter is the best. it absorbs the pee so it doesnt stink or get clumpy.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:41 (eighteen years ago)
arm and hammer! yeah, i used to use that stuff. it's good, but the Fresh Step will Blow Your Mind.
It clumps like a dream.
(ewww)
I'm afraid of the flushable stuff. I've already had a world of misery re: plumbing in the place I'm in now. Nothing would make me want to revisit that hellish experience (our place is a new build, and the main sewage line collapsed - yeah, gross back up IN OUR KITCHEN).
― molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:43 (eighteen years ago)
Walking a dog is way less gross than cleaning a cat box, esp. if you have a backyard. My brother bought a miniature septic system for his two dogs - just use a scooper to pick up the crap and drop it in the septic bucket.
― milo z, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:44 (eighteen years ago)
i read an article awhile back that said it's illegal to throw away cat waste in the trash in my town? fuck that, no way i'm clogging up my toilet with that shit.
― Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:46 (eighteen years ago)
whaaa? that is absolutely bonkers.
also, good luck trying to find someone to enforce that law, town.
― molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:47 (eighteen years ago)
honestly, carrying a bag of poop is not that big of a deal. i don't really know much about cat boxes, but it's not a big whoop either way.
this trip outside was harrowing, on the other hand:
-- 15 year old cocker spaniel who cannot walk up/down 3 flights of stairs, needs to be carried -- skittish shepherd mutt who hates rock salt because it hurts his feet -- v v cold outside -- ancient cocker decides that he doesn't want to walk anymore at all, sits down in the snow and refuses to move -- forced to carry ancient cocker and drag skittish mutt up the 3 flights of stairs while trying not to slip/fall on snow/ice
the whole "taking them out" thing is not a big deal. it's the circumstances. our enemies are: mud, cold, ice, rain, rock salt.
― La Lechera, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

haha, you can take dogs to baseball games?
― Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:03 (eighteen years ago)
you can take them to the Sox stadium on "dog day"!!
― La Lechera, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:03 (eighteen years ago)
awwwh! i love them.
when my schnauzer max got old, he did the same thing. he would just park it, and refuse to deal with 2 feet of buffalo snow. i'd shovel paths for him b/c if he did try to forge the snow, he'd get stuck.
i think, though, walking yr dog and cleaning the shitbox is no big deal. i mean, it's your pet, and of course you're going to do it. you love the little buttheads.
― molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:07 (eighteen years ago)
exactly. it sucks momentarily but then you realize that hey, they don't have thumbs/fingers and cannot get their own meals or poop hygienically. they need a little help. might as well help them, as they are helpless buttheads.
― La Lechera, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:10 (eighteen years ago)
do dogs like baseball?
― Jordan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

― La Lechera, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:12 (eighteen years ago)
cats do a funny sweeping thing, esp. if some litter gets outside the box. my one cat gertrude can often be seen sweeping up around the box, trying to get the stray litter back home. it's cute. i always make sure to thank her for trying.
― molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 22:12 (eighteen years ago)
wow! my cats specifically kick litter outside the box. i have to sweep it up every day. they are bitches.

luv u shroder! the guy is just sitting there in the middle of the field. i think he fell asleep for a second.
here's what you do with puppy bowl -- put on a record, get a book and put the tv on mute. periodically look at the puppies. get a snack. read. look at the puppies and squeal. read. repeat.

The running time of Puppy Bowls I-IV was 180 minutes (including commercials). The running time of Puppy Bowl V was decreased to 120 minutes (including commercials). Jessie Dinh, Producer, Discovery Studios, explained the reason for the decrease: "We only did two hours this year so that we had the opportunity to include some other fun elements."[5]
