That's all. I can't think of one from the 80s that hasn't already been done, and I haven't really played enough computer games from the 00s. They are too complicated for me and use too many buttons.

Haha, that has been my problem too ever since all computer and video games (even platform games like Mario) went 3D.

I mean, I guess it's nice that games have become complex and alost like an artform, but for people like who just want to occasionally play a game without sacrificing too much time to it, games are just too much of a hassle these days. It seems today even learning to play a game might take hours.

I do like the idea of a game being a big, immersive experience (hence my Monkey Island nod), but overly-tricksy game mechanics actually get in the way of plot and atmosphere for me.

Well don't assume all games are now like that though! There's plenty of new games that are awesome and still pretty simple. Audiosurf is a great recent example. Lots of fun games on Xbox live. DS stuff like Brain Training.

All this talk about dull-sounding life simulators reminds me of Sierra's Jones In The Fast Lane (aka Keeping Up With Jones), which wasn't very good at all but kept me quite entertained, mainly thanks to high-tech digitized voices...

Wizkid was amazing and unique altho the payoff at the end was a bit of a joke - making you play Asteroids (Wizeroids) and score 5000 or whatever it was to complete the game

I'm only about 5 hours in so it's too early for me to know this for sure, but I think I might want to retract my Knights of The Old Republic nomination and replace it with a Mass Effect nomination. Grounds: same game but better. Sticking point: is it likely to have a plot twist anywhere near as amazing as the one in KOTOR? Probably not.
