I propose...
ILX presents the top 100 video games ever.
Old style poll. Nominations, then ballots.
Nominations would work as follows.
Each poster gets three nominations. One game from the 80s (and 70s, if you insist), one from the 90s, and one from the 00s. Nominations are cross format, so you don't need to specify "Tetris (WonderSwan Color)". Sequels are seperate games, apart from sports titles. So Sonic 2 and Sonic are different games completely, but John Madden 93 and John Madden 2001 aren't.
Then we vote later on, and then we have a big REVEAL in the future one weekend.
WHO'S WITH ME?

Hold on, is this poll just for video games, or are computer games ok also?
― Tuomas, Monday, 17 March 2008 09:18 (eighteen years ago)
I mean as far as I know, video games only refers to stuff like Sega, Nintendo, i.e. consoles that were only meant for playing games, unlike computers. And what about arcade games?

The Secret of Monkey Island II: Le Chuck's Revenge
That's all. I can't think of one from the 80s that hasn't already been done, and I haven't really played enough computer games from the 00s. They are too complicated for me and use too many buttons.
― chap, Monday, 17 March 2008 09:38 (eighteen years ago)
Haha, that has been my problem too ever since all computer and video games (even platform games like Mario) went 3D.
― Tuomas, Monday, 17 March 2008 09:39 (eighteen years ago)
I mean, I guess it's nice that games have become complex and alost like an artform, but for people like who just want to occasionally play a game without sacrificing too much time to it, games are just too much of a hassle these days. It seems today even learning to play a game might take hours.
― Tuomas, Monday, 17 March 2008 09:46 (eighteen years ago)
"alost" ="almost"
I do like the idea of a game being a big, immersive experience (hence my Monkey Island nod), but overly-tricksy game mechanics actually get in the way of plot and atmosphere for me.
― chap, Monday, 17 March 2008 09:50 (eighteen years ago)
Well don't assume all games are now like that though! There's plenty of new games that are awesome and still pretty simple. Audiosurf is a great recent example. Lots of fun games on Xbox live. DS stuff like Brain Training.

Too many 90s things to vote for (I guess the Civ 2 votes satisfy my Civ I urge, but still can't choose between various Lucasarts adventures), too few 2000s games. I can think of a handful I've played and enjoyed but they're all faithful sequels, remakes, or seriously retro in design, which means that no matter how much fun I've had with them it doesn't feel right voting for them.

Boulderdash - How good? And crazy good soundtrack. X-Wing - great graphics, great sound, great playability. I went through dozens of cheap joysticks blowing up tie fighters. F.E.A.R. - the only game that REALLY SCARED ME since playing Doom way back when.

― darraghmac, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 12:50 (eighteen years ago)
the equal rep of decades works for me
someone nominate Daytona USA arcade - best in-arcade driver of the 90s surely (was never bothered about Sega Rally or Ridge Racer much tho the latter was the real mould-breaker)
― blueski, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 13:10 (eighteen years ago)
Daytona was one of the biggest robbers of quarters from my pocket. OMG, I HAVE TO KEEP GOING IF I'M EVER GOING TO MAKE IT TO WICHITA.
To hell with that game.

Arnie is a fucking video game that seemingly I and no other person ever cares about

Everything I'd vote for has been picked already, but here's:
80s: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure
90s: What's that god strategy game where the voice says, "It's all over!" in a posh british accent when you die?
00s: I am scared of games after 1999
― Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 24 March 2008 02:37 (eighteen years ago)
Oh, right--Megalomania.
― Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 24 March 2008 03:33 (eighteen years ago)
ok im nominating S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. incredible game, an impossibly bleak and beautiful soviet reworking of vice city. this is for my 00s.
for my 80s i'll nominate the dizzy the egg adventure series, they're all pretty much the same but i'll say treasure island dizzy to separate them from the crappy cash-in dizzys.
90s... no one has properly nominated Frontier: Elite II so i'll go for that.
― NI, Monday, 24 March 2008 13:12 (eighteen years ago)
Treasure Island Dizzy also has my favourite box art ever:

Alter Ego is probably top 20 games of all time for me. EMOTIONALLY AFFECTING.
What was the C64 management game with a bug in that meant some obscure Scottish left back scored in every game, including ones he didn't play in. Kenny Dalgish's European Manager?
― Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 12:23 (eighteen years ago)
we need a list of games mentioned but not nominated so we can get some sockpuppet nominations going. unless dom just wants to count everything mentioned regardless.
― ledge, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 12:30 (eighteen years ago)
SPEEDBALL 2

Things I've spent a shit-load of time playing that haven't been nominated yet:
various Road Rash versions Roadblasters

― Ste, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 13:47 (eighteen years ago)
the gobliiins games are still great. and wizkid. especially wizkid! i take back elite ii and put wizkid in there instead. i never got very far with it though, just loved the music and the look and feel of it.

Starquake
(everything else I wanted to nom is already here)
― CharlieNo4, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 14:25 (eighteen years ago)
I have a Little Computer People screenshot pinned up at my desk. It wasn't so bad!!! Any noms/votes for the Sims should be redirected back to this game.
All this talk about dull-sounding life simulators reminds me of Sierra's Jones In The Fast Lane (aka Keeping Up With Jones), which wasn't very good at all but kept me quite entertained, mainly thanks to high-tech digitized voices...
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 14:50 (eighteen years ago)
Wizkid was amazing and unique altho the payoff at the end was a bit of a joke - making you play Asteroids (Wizeroids) and score 5000 or whatever it was to complete the game
― blueski, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 14:52 (eighteen years ago)
I'm only about 5 hours in so it's too early for me to know this for sure, but I think I might want to retract my Knights of The Old Republic nomination and replace it with a Mass Effect nomination. Grounds: same game but better. Sticking point: is it likely to have a plot twist anywhere near as amazing as the one in KOTOR? Probably not.
Nominations end in 5 days, yeah? I'll have to hurray up and plough through it!
― JimD, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 20:05 (eighteen years ago)
what's the KOTOR plot twist?
― blueski, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 20:28 (eighteen years ago)
Planescape: Torment plot twist < Baldur's Gate plot twist < KOTOR plot twist
(ps: all are awesome, plus all were developed by essentially the same ppl)
― HI DERE, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 22:21 (eighteen years ago)
ARGH
All of my < should be >
Two people here, me and my brother:
Banjo Tooie Diablo 2 Scorched Earth (way better than any worms game.. even the earliest worms games were better than what they are today) ______________________ SNK vs. Capcom 2 (instead of street fighter games) Revolt (rc racing) Mario Brawl Mario Galaxy
― CaptainLorax, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 22:52 (eighteen years ago)
My fondest video game memories would be the old first-person dungeon crawlers like Lands of Lore and Daggerfall.
― CaptainLorax, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 23:00 (eighteen years ago)
Ok, turns out Mass Effect has an insane and fucked combat system, so Knights of the Old Republic keeps my vote.
KOTOR PLOT TWIST ((((SPOILER))) . . . . . . . . . You spend most of the game looking for this sith lord...and it turns out he's YOU! Sounds patheic and obvious when taken out of context, but through the first 30 or 40 hours the game does amazing amounts of misdirection, while encouraging you to really care about your character, so when the twist does drop it manages to be truly shocking and also incredibly crushing. . . . . . . (((END SPOILER)))
― JimD, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 02:39 (eighteen years ago)
Castlevania: Symphony Of the Night
I mentioned this one already so I change my 90s pick to Strikers 1945 II.

― Dom Passantino, Sunday, 30 March 2008 01:03 (eighteen years ago)
somebody needs to nominate smw2: yoshi's island
― circles, Sunday, 30 March 2008 01:33 (eighteen years ago)
Seriously, these nom restrictions are really painful. Poll will be awesome regardless, but...
― Doctor Casino, Monday, 31 March 2008 03:58 (eighteen years ago)
I've got a list (in addition to the one I posted above) of about 15-20 games I'm really shocked haven't been nominated. Stuff from the Oregon Trail to Loom. But I guess 3 nom's a person is a good way of creating consensus.
