The fact that they’re giving this a summer release date though is somewhat significant. It means that Fox knows The A-Team comes with plenty of explosions, and so regardless of whether it’s bad or good audiences will show up to see it in droves, particularly if it’s hot outside and they’ve just eaten red meat.

Oops:
Way back in August, I sat down with Ice Cube and heard how eager he was to work with Bruce Willis in a remake of "The A-Team" being directed by John Singleton. But the rapper/actor/producer was worried that the writers strike might undermine the effort. Looks like it did, because now Singleton is out and the project is moving forward with a new team that may or may not be interested in Cube taking on the challenge of replacing Mr. T in the role of B.A. Baracus. In the trades today, Michael Fleming has an informative update on the revamped project: "Twentieth Century Fox has assembled a creative team to transform 1980s TV series 'The A-Team' into a summer 2010 film. Studio has set Joe Carnahan to direct and Ridley Scott to produce, with Tony Scott exec producing through their Scott Free banner. Also producing are Jules Daly and Stephen J. Cannell, the latter of whom created the original TV series. Carnahan will team with Brian Bloom to polish a script by Skip Woods ('G.I. Joe'). The intention is to start production by June for a June 11, 2010, release. Fox has struggled to find a way to exploit the branded TV show while avoiding the series' campy tone. Director John Singleton had most recently been attached to such an attempt before dropping out. Woods came in and started over. 'Tony and I feel that marrying this Scott Free project with Joe's sensibility will result in a fast-paced, exciting franchise, one we hope will be around for years to come,' Scott said. Carnahan and the Scott brothers say they will use the original premise of the series as the template for an action film. In the original, four Vietnam vets convicted of armed robbery escape from military prison and became do-gooder mercenaries. The Middle East will replace Vietnam as the place the four did their tour of duty, but Carnahan said the origin story is the jumping-off point. 'You can ... make a film that reflects on the real world without losing the great sense of fun and the velocity of action in a classic summer popcorn film,' Carnahan said." [Daily Variety]

This was so fucking awful. Full of plot holes bigger than the van, awful dialogue, shitty CGI, just ugh. I wasn't expecting a great movie, but this wasn't campy enough to be fun. There was some camp, yes, but it tried to take itself too seriously as it went on. My favorite plot hole was the cargo ship that was able to sail from Germany to Los Angeles in less than 48 hours.
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Sunday, 13 June 2010 01:38 (fifteen years ago)
I actually liked this, despite the ship timeline mishap.
Rampage Jackson probably plays a better Mr. T than Mr. T would now (without being a carbon copy). Dude was THE perfect choice for the role. Other casting was good too, although Liam Neeson's voice is so overbearing and he has SO many lines. For once, I didn't hate Jessica Biel.

Tanking = coming in 2nd place now?
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 June 2010 13:29 (fifteen years ago)
in this case, given the development costs, yeah
― sites.younglife.org:8080 (history mayne), Monday, 14 June 2010 13:36 (fifteen years ago)
The casting was good, I won't argue that, but Neeson's American accent was terrible. And I actually hated Biel in this more than usual. I guess I just wish it would have kept up the tone of the first 10 minutes, what with the "Somewhere Else in Mexico..." tag and everything. I just felt like it tried to take itself too seriously. And the "flying the tank" part? WTF.
Two things the film missed that I really wanted to see:1. The team trapped and having to improvise some sort of explosive device/battering ram out of a tractor and old gas tanks.2. Some small town farm family being harassed by some weird, militant development company.

It's not quite as wink-and-nod at the audience as that earlier trailer led me to believe. I was expecting something kind of like Die Hard 4, where the filmmakers were totally in on the absurdity. The A-Team would've been fantastic if they'd used the same approach. As it is, though, I've seen far worse action films.

― there are 6 different girls who are all 1 Megan Fox in this movie (Jon Lewis), Monday, 14 June 2010 14:55 (fifteen years ago)
I dunno. The A-Team is pretty much just a giant budget version of the tv show down to the detail, like the van, Murdock's bomber jacket, Hannibal's cigar, the catch phrases, etc. Karate Kid only throws its net around the single mother/only child/bullies/teacher elements and envisions them all in China rather than Encino, and all that comes with that geographical shift. xxxxp

eh, the A-Team was lots of fun - but I've never seen the TV show and had zero expectations. Would've liked to have seen a lot more silly inventiveness but what they did was fun. Liam Neeson seemed to be a video game character in some of the close-ups though?!

I only have the time and resources to get a babysitter for Important Films, like Macgruber.

Otherwise I might have seen the A-Team.

is this a real thing, people giving a damn about bradley cooper and the state of his career? i mean i know he's been in some big movies but...really?
― some dude, Monday, 14 June 2010 21:14 (fifteen years ago)
I've read a lot of articles about him that seem to infer he's all set to become an A-level superstar within the next few years, I don't get it. His wonky, uneven eyes baffle me.

I find him attractive but I realized with a start the other day that I've unknowingly seen him in several movies.

for a star-to-be he's rather recessive.
yeah it's like he was born to be a seat-filler in ensemble rom coms like Valentines' Day and He's Just Not That Into You, and occasionally stumble into being the straight man in some actual funny comedies

and sometimes be the upmarket alternative when Will Arnett isn't available to play a douchebag antagonist

i care because i think he kind of stinks and i wish other people would get cast in movies like the hangover

I spent the first season of Alias despising Bradley Cooper, so I find the prospect of him becoming an A-list movie star kind of hilarious.
― ô_o (Nicole), Monday, 14 June 2010 21:48 (fifteen years ago)
there are way worse leading men atm, and he was fine in 'alias'
sam worthington, josh duhamel, ashton kutcher...
― sites.younglife.org:8080 (history mayne), Monday, 14 June 2010 21:49 (fifteen years ago)
haha ok, i didn't realize there was a hopeful note in your speculation on his downfall (xpost)
― some dude, Monday, 14 June 2010 21:49 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i sure am tired of people calling josh duhamel the next tom cruise
vince vaughan, brad pitt, gerard butler
― sites.younglife.org:8080 (history mayne), Monday, 14 June 2010 21:50 (fifteen years ago)
no-one's calling bradley cooper the next tom cruise either!

That doesn't necessarily mean Tom Cruise dude, I'd say he is pretty much beyond that. Is "A-minus" better?
― he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 14 June 2010 22:06 (fifteen years ago)
fair enough, my point was only that josh duhamel isn't really getting the kind of industry stamp of approval that cooper is
― some dude, Monday, 14 June 2010 23:17 (fifteen years ago)
dude straight up admits to roll-on tans and appeared in various David Wain-related affairs, I'm basically cool with Cooper (liked him fine in the hangover) even if I don't trust him to only (or even regularly) appear in good movies.
