Design Classics

I'm kind of obsessed with the idea of "design classics" at the moment. Probably comes with owning a house, and my parents house having been full of awful tat while I was growing up, things that were 'nice' as opposed to things that are 'fucking awesome' (and which often cost less than the plain 'nice' things).

So what do you consider to be "design classics", and why?

Obviously this thread NEEDS pictures.

iphone (as a definitive Apple product - trouble with ipods is that each new update makes the older models look rubbish esp. re the original with it's relative bulk and lack of color screen)

blueski, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 10:36 (eighteen years ago)

I could have sworn we did this but search says no! I say this because I am sure I posted a photo of a Nutello glass. We've now got about 10 of them and they are the perfect size and dimensions for children, but also just a great little glass. Also, essentially, a free design classic.

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 10:37 (eighteen years ago)

we definitely did this before (i ranted about alessi)

xpost same goes for the imac - but you could hail the original imac design just for the innovation and what it lead on to

Ed, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 10:51 (eighteen years ago)

I searched before I started and was staggered not to find an older thread. Oh well, beautiful things never done gone harm.

I think the G5 iMac kind of found the platonic essence of the 'guts behind the screen' / all-in-one Apple philosophy, particularly with the little magnetic remote and tiny built-in iSight. The newer, metal model is... well, it doesn't quite go with things, or look as starkly modernist, as the all-white space-plastic design.

I love this, the John Lewis Zest chair, but Em, while she admits its comfort, hates its aesthetic:

i've been thinking about design classics a lot too - i work in design but some recent design developments have brought on a sort of crisis in my thinking. ironically, the thing that made me think about these classics was seeing all these redesigned McDonalds' popping up all over the place. the fact the McDs in Glasgow has Jacobson Egg chairs in the window signals a kind of a death knell for that piece and, by extension (for me), also rules out a lot of early-mid century design.
http://www.uncrate.com/men/images/2007/01/egg-chair.jpg
i'd pretty much rule out using a lot of design classics based on McDonalds even if the redesigns don't use any of the specific pieces. sadly i think the eames lounger, as much as i think it's one of the greatest chairs ever made, also comes within this area. it's not enough any more for me but, obviously, i don't have any problem with people buying and enjoying them! i think McDonalds had done me a favour, ultimately.

jed_, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

jed - i know exactly what you mean. When i walked past the new MacD in Leicester my heart sunk, firstly because I thought much the same as you, it just devalues that whole..er..aesthetic, but secondly because I thought it looked quite good! However the stink of grease still kept me out.

I think the Eames sort of transcends all this though. I mean it's ubiquitous anyway (and it used to irritate me that it was on Frasier and the man never used it - or at least only once that I could remember), but lying on one is still one of the coolest things you can do without getting naked. Unless you want to lie on it naked obviously...

can context affect an item's design classic status that much?

only if ubiquity is an indicator of classicity...

well how did it become ubiquitous, is the question. but i'd rather think about items that are mass-produced and successful as design classics for a bit, rather than just stuff that's classic aesthetically.

blueski, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

The Penguin paperback covers to thread!

I think Blueski and I are coming from the same place. I don't think ubiquity means lacking in class. A design should also be practical as well as good to look at. To be honest there are various furniture designers that are currently working that manage to get the industrial/mass-produce vibe while maintaining an 'individual' sense. Sort of thing.

the tomytronic mould homages 50s sci-fi well but the real strength was in the positioning of the keypad controls and the concept generally.

as for joysticks, conventional gaming wisdom seems to favour this classic design:

The Mini-Moog:

The ergonomics are fantastic, unbeaten to this day, really. It is instantly recognisable, a person with only the slightest knowledge of electronic instruments will be able to pick out out in a picture. It's name is cute and cool and funny, and trips off the tongue. It took something esoteric analogue electronic music synthesis, and gave it to the masses, made it comprehensible. What a classic piece it was/is.

Oh, I didn't mean to be! I'm all for good design being more democratic and nothing irritates me more than reading about how such and such a 'piece' is affordable design when it's a £3000 sofa. But when I think of macDonalds I think of mostly bad things, cheap meat, a design that was a watered down parody of a diner, poor seating, even worse lighting. So it was more the association of those things with things that I like that was depressing. I think, though, ultimately it may a good thing because some bar/restaurant designers/owners have become lazy in recent years and maybe if they have to compete with MacD's for a look it might shake them up a bit.

Don't you dare! The furniture in your house goes so well with the actual house - it would loose a lot of charm.

My house itself is sort of a design classic as well, according to the architects that live next door (also this).

Matt DC, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

are jed and ned just being snobby here?
can context affect an item's design classic status that much?

"just"?

of course i am/we are being snobs but only in as much as it's part of the job to be one. just as you, presumably, would not use a certain typeface or photoshop filter, for example (maybe it's a bad example). not because it's bad but because it's either ubiquitous or lazy.

i dunno i don't see a big problem with Mcdonalds trying to class up their interiors in this way - at least not when the alternative is to stick with what they did before

i can't think of an analogous context re my field - Comic Sans on a funeral directors website? it's not quite the same!

The cables are beautiful, and compare it to the much more utilitarian Williamsburg, Manhattan and Queensborough bridges where your view is blocked by girders. (OK if you walk or bike on the queensboro you are outside the structure)

The FedEx logo may or may not be classic, but the arrow bit is definitely not. It's incidental, at best. One might liken it instead to an Easter egg rather than a design component.

But you have a point:

http://www.thesneeze.com/mt-archives/000273.php

Why choose to keep the arrow so subtle? It seems to show remarkable restraint. Weren't you or the people at FedEx ever tempted to make it more obvious with an outline or a different color?

A good question and one that I am frequently asked. An arrow, in and of itself, is one of the most mundane graphic devices in visual communications. Truly, there is nothing unique or particularly strategic (marketing-wise) in using an arrow as a brand identifier. Early on, before the brand rollout in mid-1994, FedEx’s public relations agency was preparing to emphasize the arrow as a secondary graphic to underscore the “speed/precision” positioning. They proposed to leverage this in their FedEx communications. Landor put its foot down and said, “No way.”

The power of the hidden arrow is simply that it is a “hidden bonus.” It is a positive-reverse optical kind of thing: either you see it or you don’t. Importantly, not “getting the punch line” by not seeing the arrow, does not reduce the impact of the logo’s essential communication. The power of the logo and the FedEx marketing supporting the logo is strong enough to convey clearly FedEx brand positioning. On the other hand, if you do see the arrow, or someone points it out to you, you won’t forget it. I can’t tell you how many people have told me how much fun they have asking others “if they can spot ‘something’ in the logo.” To have filled in the arrow, or to somehow make it more “visible” would have been like Henny Youngman saying “Please take my wife” instead of “Take my wife. Please.” Punch lines that need to be explained are neither funny nor memorable.

Abbott, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

The more I see that arrow, now, the more beautiful it becomes. It's so... clean, and I think a lot of that is due to that fact that it's an absence. It's the space between the spokes. It's a Taoist arrow. Beautiful.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

I think that the arrow would be more effective as a design element if it didn't have several neighboring regions of whitespace competing for attention.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 13 May 2008 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

However, now that my attention has been drawn to the arrow, it positively glows at me.
