Aimless was born as aimless@national_raffle_association.org, circa 2001 on the Greenspun LUSENET. When the stardust from which Aimless is constituted finally coalesced into coherent form, it was within the original Ask A Drunk forum. The name had no special provenance. It just appealed to me.

When I first came to ILX, I tried to post as "RJG" (my initials), but was stymied because there was already someone registered with that name. I think my first post was as "R. Gr33ne", but I settled on "R. J. Gr33ne" for the time being. Eventually, ILX was closed to unregistered users and I was forced to register. I registered as "R. J. Gr33ne" and used a rotation of screen names integrating my name (R0dney) into whatever phrase I thought was funny at the moment. Eventually, around the time of the sandbox era, I started using "The Reverend R0dney J. Gr33ne". By the time ILX2 came online, I had decided I no longer wanted to use my real name on this site anymore, and since I'd had that screen name for a while, I just shortened it to "The Reverend". About a month ago I created a separate images-off account as simply "rev".

we've done this before, haven't we?
mine: not after the damned song, nor the cartoon character who inspired it. it's actually after a character (dr grimly-fiendish, with a hyphen) from a (rather wonderful) children's book called "the founding of evil hold school", written by the (rather twattish) nikolai tolstoy and published in 1968.
why did i choose it? i dunno; i think i'd been tidying the bookshelf the day i registered with ILX and must have come across it. actually, my original registered name was "grimlord", and i've no idea whence that came either.

the "g" stands for "great" and the "r" stands for "rock" since that is what i came to ILX to learn about.

I like stuff like Wire, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Pixies, and all that jazz (or rock, whatever.) I also love Hardcore, Punk, Speed/Death/Black Metal, etc. Electronic music appeals to me as well. All around a stereotypical dweebazoid. Thank you.

this is my 4th ilx name. first one was my real name, but then i was looking for a job and thought i'd ungoogle myself. so i was "spittle" for a while (i do not know why, it was the word i typed in), until someone made the reasonable point that it was an unappetizing name. so then i was gypsy mothra, which was derived from a name i had used elsewhere. and then in the sandbox i changed it to tipsy, which tagged along to ilx2.
the good thing about this is since most people who aren't jaymc haven't kept track of me, i can revive threads i started under the old names and otm myself.

Abbott, who was dangerously cool too begin with, cubed her coolness by being named after E. Abbott Abbott.
Anyway, I posted under my real name for a while, then decided that, what with my real name being so consummately googleable, I'd better switch. Casuistry is, among other things, the art of persuading something of something through slightly incorrect argument. It was also the name of a song off my band's first album. And it's fun to say.

My parents named me Tuomas. It's the Finnish variant of Thomas/Tomas. Sometimes I wish they would've given me some really old Finnish name instead of a Christian one. But I kinda like it how the Biblical Thomas doesn't believe Christ was resurrected until he sees the wounds in his arms. So he's like the OG sceptic. I've yet to see the wounds of any deities.

I had registered with ILX just before it changed and you couldn't change your screen name, then forgot my password and just decided on this thinking I could change it easily. It's from a TV advert for Take a Break or Pick me Up where they have people dressed as the Village People singing a YMCA- type song but in small print at the bottom of the screen they have had to say "Not the real Village People" which I found amusing at the time.
― Not the real Village People, Saturday, 24 May 2008 16:42 (eighteen years ago)
Started posting w/real name, then phreaked my surname so it read "Norman Phay" for awhile, then went to unitelligable hax0r5p33k version of this "|\|0|2|\/|/-\|\| |*|-|/-\'/" for a little while longer. Hit on "Pashmina" because it was completely random & had no connection whatsoever to my real name. At the time there was this spoof chatroom thing that ran in the guardian that was funny maybe twice in it's 3-4year run of being featured weekly, and one of the fake contibutors to that was called "Pashmina" - I used it instead of the other alternative I had, "Apricot", because I'd just read the one funny instance, or something like that anyway. Yuo got to larf, inchar.

The SUPERKIDS system of Karate was developed by Sensei Wally Slocki. It is a study in movement education. It involves an understanding of how certain body actions or movements are performed and of the results they can produce.
At a time when there is a general outcry against a lack of discipline, dishonesty, criminal activity and the general breakdown in etiquette, the Slocki-Ryu Karate System proposes to assist in addressing this situation by exposing students (as well as the public at large) to an Oriental tradition which propagates the opposite.

Was originally felcher in the pre-urbandictionary.com days because I was a teenager and thought it was funny. decided to change it but keep the "fel" for some kind of recognition, so then it went to Felonious Drunk. Got tired of that, kept the "fe". Fetchboy is the name of a play that a good friend of mine wrote that some friends and I made into a film and did one wreck of a live performance of.

Thought I did this at one point. One of my nicknames in high school was "Big E" (cause I'm a big guy named Erik - my friends weren't that original). In college, I met several other Big Es which made it less than useful as a nickname. About the same time, I first heard "Easy Snappin'" by Theophilus Beckford, and EZSnappin came into being.
Of course, then I started insisting people call me by my name so it lived on only in email and online.

I guess I should do the origin of Sick Mouthy; about 22 years ago, a primary school teacher swapped the first letters of everyone in the class's first and last names, and I became Sicholas Nouthall. Sick Mouthy evolved out of that and the habit I used to have, aged about 20, of typing absolutely disgustingly profane things in MSN chats with my mate Karim. And it's been a useful not-quite-anonymous forum 'handle' ever since.

• One prominent character from the book, Steve Shasta, is left entirely out of the movie, possibly because the movie winds up being a coming-of-age bromantic tragedy largely about Stacy, so there's no room for observations about a guy who's getting a great deal of sex himself. Shasta is a self-aggrandizing blowhard who spends a lot of time in the local media, talking about his sports successes in highly printable, colorful soundbites. He also tells everyone in school that he's celibate, because he's saving all his strength for wakeboarding. This makes him seem inaccessible and mysterious, and gets him a lot of blowjobs from a lot of girls, including Linda Barrett herself. The book includes a number of colorful Steve Shasta stories; he's about as big a character as Linda or Spicoli or The Rat.

In the late 90s I wanted to sign up for one of these fancy webmail email addresses. Every combination of everything was already taken, which amazed me at the time ("there can't be that many people using this Internet"). The prefix "fields of" came from a trend in 80s and 90s music to have "fields of" in the title of something. I have no idea where "salmon" came from. So literally it was the first thing I could think of that wasn't already taken.

i first signed up for ilx when i was 16 and working at a sketchy call centre part time after school. you didn’t have to use your real name on calls so my friend and i used to play this game where we’d write names for each other on scraps of paper and whenever you get a call you open the paper right before you introduce yourself. the goal was to write the silliest fake name possible to try to make each other laugh on call/to hold in your laughter. i still remember a lot of them (though most are too racist to reproduce here) one was ‘samosa gibreel’ which became my first ilx username, and also a bit of a nickname among pals.
a few years later while in college i posted “lol i buy weed off the guy who put out that record” under a post about an album out on a local diy punk label run by my then-drug dealer. a couple weeks later i got a furious message via ilxmail from said drug dealer (luckily he didn’t know it was me) so i ditched samosa gibreel. at the time i was reading Great Expectations in a 19th c novels class, in which there is a character named Flopson who appears briefly in one scene—going through old books at my moms house last year and found the book, i had written ‘lol flopson’ in the margin—and chose it because it sounds milquetoaste and british, which felt appropriate to ilx

I feel like I've said this on another thread but I didn't understand the display name / username dichotomy, I just thought for some reason it was ILX style to have a parenthetical comment as part of your name, so I intended to be called Guayaquil (not a place I have any connection to, I just like the name) but then ILXified it to Guayaquil (eephus!) and then quickly learned that I was signaling that I was actually eephus so that's what I am now. But that's why I never change Guayaquil to anything else.

There must be two of these threads as I'm sure I already explained mine somewhere.
My name is G3rry.
I went through a bunch of mIRC and online gaming (mostly Counterstrike) aliases which were variations on Ger-something like Ger-iatric, Ger-ymander, Ger-anium and... Ger-onimo.
Problem was online Germans kept seeing it as me tagging myself as [Ger]-something and would then attempt to speak to me in German.
So I dropped the Ger- and the onimo stuck. I like it. Except when it's mistaken for (d)omino.
Then ilx found me.

I had been spending too much time on the fringes of an online community with a disproportionate number of extremely earnest trotskyists, maoists etc and I thought claiming the mantle of the true left would be funny and provocative. it doesn’t translate at all and it wasn’t that funny in context either

The first time I had to create a username online circa 1995 I was listening to nothing but the Descendents and Buzzcocks. Pete Shelley lost out to Milo Aukerman as a reference. Future usernames were variations until 2004 or so.

Literally just my first and last name minus vowels. It's so dumb.
I first coined this for my tumblr (2011-2014). I don't really like it but I don't want to change it either. Within ILX, I have lived previous lives as:

Treblekicker is a Pavement reference. It's the name of the label of their first single and publishing company.

Sarahell's username origins are precisely as i presumed but i thought "onimo" was one of those display names that means "display name" in another language.
Forgot about that memory tapes track, i liked it too.

when I posted to the local Orlando BBS "Demanding Times" around 1995-1996, my original user name was Flipper, but I thought that was lame and wanted to change it. One day I was postin' in the chat and my brother and best friend were there too and they started making fun of the sloppy way I communicated, saying I sounded like a caveman. so I changed to Neanderthal.
obv I didn't start as that on ILX, but after the permanent stain on the BJO nick, and after I got ran off the board by max and grady when I was San Te, I later came back as Neanderthal, then used a few other nicks, then came back to this when I forgot the passwords to the others.

I assume the origin of my dn is apparent, we listened to John Strauss in my 4th grade music class. The teacher explained that "die flademaus" actually means "the bat" but I still thought it was a funny word and a couple of years later when we got our unlimited dial-up AOL it became my screen name.
― Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 02:42 (five years ago)
lol yeah I like yours because I legit thought that was what it was called when I first heard someone say "Die Fledermaus"
― Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 02:43 (five years ago)
Already said mine, my current screen name I'm sticking with because i like it, its from Kimmy Schmidt when Titus snidely calls Lillian "stoop crone".
― Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 03:05 (five years ago)
Mine is a character in Trollope's Barsetshire series; I chose it more or less at random because I was posting on the Guardian books blog and wanted an identifiably female screen name. Eventually I started posting more on the Guardian music blog than the books blog, so when I came here it seemed reasonable to keep using the same name.
― Lily Dale, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 03:29 (five years ago)
Your dn is my favorite because i thought it was in reference to the spiritualist/psychic community in western ny (and so did not identify it as a female dn)
― Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Tuesday, 2 February 2021 03:42 (five years ago)
“unperson” is a name I’ve used in several other contexts over the years; I just really like the word/concept. “but also fuck you” is something another ilxor typed at me one day and I immediately adopted it as a username.

― mookieproof, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 04:22 (five years ago)
presumably an unperson was a person at some point before their personhood was removed, thus making them even less of a person than a nonentity

Mine comes from the title of a book I was reading to my kids called That’s Not My Lion. Great book for the under 6s.
― that's not my post, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 06:38 (five years ago)
my name is a combination of my initials and a silly reference to the old commercial slogan “pork: the other white meat” which i used to find hilarious and baffling when i’d see it on tv as a kid. someone eventually pointed out to me that there was another ilxor who shared my initials and that my name seemed like a reference to him. i don’t remember thinking about this when i made up my ilx name and now i honestly feel a little awkward about it! but i’m also too used to my current name to really want to change it now.
