Born in New Delhi, India, because her parents were visiting their families and stayed a little too long, Jindal landed when she was only a few days old in Metairie, where her parents had been living for some years. Between Baton Rouge and the suburbs of New Orleans, she has spent nearly all her life in Louisiana.

The oldest of three children and daughter of a stay-at-home mom and an engineer dad, Jindal was a star student at Grace King High School, where she was known for being both lively and bookish.

"We were really boring -- all student-government type kids," says Brenda Bordelon, a close high-school pal. "I was on the school paper; she was on the yearbook staff. Our idea of a good time was to hang out at Baskin and Robbins.

"We didn't do the typical stuff you expect kids growing up in New Orleans to do -- we didn't go down to Bourbon Street. The most exciting thing we'd do is have sleepovers, just enjoy each other's company. We were pretty good kids."

With a 4.3 average, Jindal was clearly serious and ambitious. And she appeared to be self-possessed as well.

"She was friendly and outgoing but not over-the-top bubbly," Bordelon says. "She had a small group of friends. Being a good, loyal friend was important to Supriya. She didn't need to impress everybody who walked by."

Even in high school, Jindal was a devotee of conservative politics. When the 1988 Republican convention came to New Orleans, she worked on the welcoming committee as a volunteer.

Although Christianity in India dates to the 1st century AD,[1] Catholicism was introduced much later in the 16th century by the Portuguese.[2]

wait waht? so they were introducing protestant christianity back in the 1st century AD

and what, Thursday, 31 July 2008 18:50 (seventeen years ago)

According to local legend, the dawn of Christianity in India dates back to 52 AD, with the arrival of Saint Thomas to Kodungallur in Kerala and the establishment of the Seven Churches.[8] As a carpenter, he offered to build a palace for the Indo-Parthian King Gondophares,[9] later converting his daughter and her newly-wed groom,[10] before returning to Mylapore, Chennai in 72 AD. It is believed that he had attained martyrdom here.[8] [11] The Syrian Malabar Nasrani tradition goes back to the very beginnings of 1st century Christian thought and the seven churches that were established by St. Thomas among the natives and the Jewish diaspora in Kerala. According to the Acts of Thomas, the Malabari Jews were the first Christians converted by Thomas in India, who had settled in Kerala since the time of King Solomon of Israel.

According to historians, St. Thomas who was himself a Jew by birth, evangelizing in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the Apostle is believed to have been martyred at St. Thomas Mount in Chennai and buried on the site of San Thome Cathedral. Members of the Syro-Malabar Church, an eastern rite of the Catholic Church, adopted the Syriac liturgy dating from an unknown period before the 4th Century. In the 4th century, the Apostle’s relics were taken to Edessa at the instance of the Bishop of Edessa. The Christian community founded by St Thomas has since developed into a number of churches during the Portuguese persecution, including Syriac-rite churches in communion with the Roman Catholic, Antiochian Syrian Orthodox, and Nestorian churches.

i don't know anything about early christianity...

horseshoe, Thursday, 31 July 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)

deej, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

it's a bit garbled in that wiki -- either a) the early church wouldn't have called itself 'catholic' while the portuguese missionaries would be explicitly so, or the indian missions were done by syriac or nestorian christians who found themselves outside the roman orbit after nicea and the later schism with the east -- the indian church would be sort of 'stranded' by history until the portuguese showed up again (they shelled goa to the ground, btw, for the temerity of trading with the arabs -- some historians believe this was the beginning of the end of the italian rennaissance, as the link between the indian ocean and europe went through alexandria and then venice, until the portuguese took the indian ports by force and conducted the whole sea voyage themselves around africa via mozambique, cape verde and the canaries. really interesting shit!!)

goole, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:05 (seventeen years ago)

it sounds like the part about Thomas and 52 AD is unverifiable ("local legend") but yeah, that later Syrian Christianity came over by way of Persian immigrants?

horseshoe, Thursday, 31 July 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

and yeah it was the Portuguese who brought Catholicism--i think there was some persecution of the non-Catholic Christians who were already around?

On January 11, 1977, a day before he was set to shoot one of the final scenes needed for Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Jindal was in a car accident in which he fractured his nose and left cheekbone.[4] According to Star Wars: A New Hope producer Gary Kurtz, Hamill was in surgery from 9:00 AM until 4 PM. As a result of the accident, a double was used for the landspeeder pickup shots.[5] In Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, he is seen with a new scar along his upper lip; this was explained in the film as being the result of his encounter with the wampa on the fifth planet of the Hoth system.
