I like BLT's.

simona, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Almost anything from the amazing Jewish or Italian delis back east. You can't get a good sandwich in San Francisco.

Sean, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Knuckle.

Deadman, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, yeah. "A Hero ain't nothin'but a sandwich" , but I love a good hero. Also Peanut Butter, mayonaise and banana. Yes, you can puke now.

Deadman, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Almost anything from the amazing Jewish or Italian delis back east. You can't get a good sandwich in San Francisco.

live the dream.

my favourite sandwich is one of the swiss cheese ciabattas from the Runner Bean in Dublin.

Failing that, the brie baguettes from the French place in the Epicurean Emporium are v. nice.

DV, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mmm, Brie baguettes, with lots of butter and a slice of cucumber or two

2. tandoori chicken + lettuce + chutney on white
3. stilton + cranberries

Jeff W, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Chicken mayo with lettuce, possibly onion too. On white bread.

Ally C, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I live in Worcester Massachusetts and every sub shop here thinks and Italian Sub has bologna on it. Where the fuck do they get off?

Poops McGee, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You can't get a good sandwich in San Francisco.

Ya gotta be kidding me. Hell, I can find good sandwiches even in OC, there has to be *something* in the Bay Area.

Favorite? I am very partial to the chicken tortas made at Taco Mesa. Mmm.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BACON sandwich! Just plain bacon, maybe with a bit of Ketchup, on white bread! Lovely!

jel --, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bologna doesn't even *exist* in Italy. I should know, I lived *in* Bologna for quite a while.

Can I shout at people again for calling a panino a panini?

Mark C, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bologna doesn't even *exist* in Italy.

So like chicken tikka masala and chop suey, then? Syncretic cuisines?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

best sandwich ever is a chip buttie or close second is cheese and crisps. yep yep

cherrysqueak, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Indeed Ned. Spaghetti Bolognese is also a foreign invention. The nearest you get to it is a simple meat ragu.

Tsk.

Mark C, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can I shout at people again for calling a panino a panini?

For a second I thought you had written "piano".

Dan Perry, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Peanut Butter and Jelly. old-school classic. I'm also partial to melts.

Dare, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Every sandwich I've heard mentioned so far sounds rotten. Ok, pb+j is fine, but not a list-topper. What in god's name is a chip buttie?? I've never heard the word ciabatta, either.

Sean, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

another syncretic foodstuff is Ned's beloved Mission-style burrito.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i am partial to pret salad (multi grain bread with hommous (sp?!) and salad and peppers) and veggie baguettes like my boyfriend makes with lots of salad, onions and mayonnaise. yum.

a chip buttie is a sandwhich with chips (fries) in it. i've never had one, but apparently they are AMAZING.

sandy, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Does anyone know where the burrito was invented? I'm guessing East LA.

Kris, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, and I like hot pastrami, but Sean's pretty much correct about bay area sandwiches. In berkeley you can get fantastic bread, fantastic vegetables, fantastic meat, fantastic dressings, but never in combination.

Kris, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

After doing some research, i discovered that the burrito was a chicano invention coming out of the deserts of the american southwest, the flour tortilla being a response to the lack of corn. The burrito become popular with central california miners and chicano farmworkers in the Salinas area, due to its portability and convenience (it is its own wrapper). The Mission district of San Francisco is now considered the Mecca of burritos.

the velvet elvis sandwich is the best sandwich

geeta, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Most wondorous sandwiches I have ever eaten are without doubt Cheese & Apple sandwiches from Marks & Spencer. A mixture of cream cheese, grated cheddar cheese, mayo and chunks of green and red apple in wholegrain nutty bread (I don't know the term for this particular bread, as I am not in the knowing of foodstuffs like you lot seem to be.) But they stopped making them, the bastards! Even though they were the most popular sandwich in the store! Blasted money men. If St. Michael ever decided to bring them back, I'm pretty sure you'd get people dancing for joy in the high street.

Lady Space Pilot, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

peanut butter, bananas, and honey!!!!

phil-two, Friday, 12 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Almost anything from the amazing Jewish or Italian delis back east. You can't get a good sandwich in San Francisco."

Unfortunately Sean is right. No one knows how to do corned beef right in this town. Grrr.

Alex in SF, Monday, 15 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A fried soft-shell crab on toasted white bread with lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. If all the ingredients are of high quality, this sandwich is a holy sacrament.

Colin Meeder, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

prawn mayo n sliced egg

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 16 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

geeta, you live in Boston? I spent the past 5 years of my life there. I found the deli haus after a few landsdowne shows to be appealing. Otherwise I would never eaten anything from there without 15 adult beverages in me. I also found that the Ankara Cafe put bean sprouts on every damn sandwich, I hated them. I was partial to Anna's Taqueria and Spankys in Brighton.

Poops McGee, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two months pass...
Barry's Village Deli in Waban, MA. Makes the most amaing sandwiches! Try the Number 7 sometime!!! Turkey, chopped liver, pastrami, cole slaw, and russian dressing!!!! Yummy!!!!!

Scotti, Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll tell you a horrid sandwich - Pret a Manger's Crayfish with avocado and chilli mayonnaise. Yucka. What was Suzy's delicious and nutritious avocado on toast recipe again?

N., Sunday, 14 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
Bacon (cooked until just starting to crisp) and raspberry jam on light white toast.

Ham Cheese and Mayo mmmm

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 01:54 (twenty-three years ago)

The little french bakery near my house makes AMAZING cheese + butter + mustard + little sweet pickles sandwiches. They cook their own baguettes & the cheese is really nice & sharp, so the sandwiches are just ridiculously good.

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Crab cake, club, or french dip.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 12:44 (twenty-three years ago)

in response to a comment upthread, sprouts are the worst invention ever. all sandwiches become instantly bad the minute those vile lawn clippings are thrown into the equation.

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

WHAT WHAT WHAT a SPROUT SANDWICH???

Oh my word!!! Oh you don't mean BRUSSELS SPROUTS do you?

I had some yesterday, they were grebt! Although when I got home I threw my guts up chiz chiz but hopefully this was not due to the SPROUTS. Mmmm sprouties. Fried sprouties with bacon, mmmmmmm! That wd go PERFECT on a sandwich with some really nice bread. MMMM!

Today I had a BLT and it was YUMMY BACON, I was shoxx0r3d!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

to revenge the honour of the sprout we must make geeta barf (non-stop obv)

she already knows my contribution

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

mmmm, sprout curry (not containing my sister of course)

chris (chris), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Sainsbury's have started selling 'sushi sandwiches' with mayonnaise in.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

geeta's sprouts must be like bean sprouts/cress or somesuch. IT MUST BE SO.

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

these sprouts are not from brussels, sarah - they are from california i think, where all evil green things live. also known as alfalfa says the interweb. when the sprouts grow up they become hippies

(mark's favorite sandwich: marmite + nutella + sprouts obv.)

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

NUM!

Or something.

Hey Cabbage, how do you go about a sprout curry?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I had sprout curry at that hari krishna place just off Oxford street on my birthday this year, it was numlicious.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i like the tofu clubhouse @ cafe mosaics (edmonton, ab, ca)! if i had to pick a runner-up my current fixation is my own tofu sandwich (a grilled cheese sandwich with sauteed onions and spinach, topped with tofu that's been seasoned and grilled until it's salty and crispy)

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:43 (twenty-three years ago)

You do mean a BRUSSELS SPROUT curry, right?

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I do Sarah, yes, terribly nice

chris (chris), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Your English convenience food is so great, I was addicted to those wraps with chicken or duck in them, they have them here in some places but they just cant get the spices right.

You know what I love on deli sandwiches? The mayonnaise from those massive buckets, god I love it so much, it's not at all repulsive. I used to like when people at work would say "loads of mayo please" and you put on loads and they're like "more please" and you think "right then we'll show you" and take out the spoon and you can see them just thinking "ugh". Another highlight was when someone asks for mayonnaise like as the first thing, then you're just finishing the roll and you say "do you want ketchup?" and they go "yeah!" and you go "ketchup AND mayonnaise????????????" and look at them like they're some kind of sick criminal and they're like "no of course not, hahaha".

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh my days Cabbage, tell me exact directions, I must try and make this at home!

Apart from the fact that all the mentions of mayonnaise have made me want to VOM and eat no food ever ever again urgh urgh urgh urgh BEGONE FOUL WHITE GOO.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

it's on the left if you go on the little street from Oxford Street to Soho Square, all you can eat for about a fiver. it's all buffet style so the sprout curry may not be on every day.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not always white Sarah, in the big buckets it gets kind of a green crust, YUM!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Chicken and Bacon with lots of mayo and lettuce on good old fashioned white bread.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

today's lunch: toasted sourdough bread, bacon, turkey, swiss cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and sprouts

peer into the deliciousness

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

mmmm open faced sand wedge

jack, Wednesday, 11 September 2002 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

A shout out to the Cuban roast pork sammich, and its lesser cousin the medianoche (ham and cheese, pressed).

nickn, Thursday, 12 September 2002 05:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark C's right - pannini's fukkng rule! Stateside I tend to go with salami and muenster with mustard on pumpernickel, although grilled cheese (made in a frying pan, in a toaster, or with an iron) also rocks bells.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 12 September 2002 06:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, okay: the avo/toast recipe, AGAIN.

Vegetarians: toast your favourite bread and apply mayonnaise (obv not, if a vegan). Then mash up avocado, adding a teaspoon of soy sauce before loading onto sandwich. A little garlic rubbed on the toast when it's just toasted is also good.

Carnivores: as above, but add crispy smoked bacon to the sandwich.

I do the carnivorous option, rub garlic, pepper the sandwich heavily and use gobs of mayonnaise. Hell, if my arteries are going to harden and close ANYWAY, might as well do so in style.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 12 September 2002 08:19 (twenty-three years ago)

A green CRUST??????!!!! Ronan that is far more disgusting than any of your piss stories. GROSS GROSS GROSS GROSS!

Mmmm avocados, except I must say that the fanciest I ever get with them is GUACAMOLE or mashed up on a bacon sammiche - I have a bad habit of scooping them STRAIGHT FROM THE SKIN.

Num num num num

Ew green crust gross gross gross gross

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 12 September 2002 09:20 (twenty-three years ago)

It has to be seen to be believed.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 12 September 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a bad habit of scooping them STRAIGHT FROM THE SKIN.

Since when is that a bad habit?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 12 September 2002 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Barry's Village deli in Waban, MA makes the best sandwiches I've ever tasted. Their manager Scott builds masterpieces out of cold cuts, and he's cute too!

Sylvia Corey, Sunday, 13 October 2002 11:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Whilst out on an exhausting all-day shopping spree at The Oracle in Reading yesterday, had a v yummy sarnie for lunch. Avocado, spinach and pine nut wrap, from Pret. Mmmmmmmmmmm

C J (C J), Sunday, 13 October 2002 11:08 (twenty-three years ago)

bacon

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 13 October 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I find it difficult to choose. So many different varieties. So I look for a minute or two then I think 'oh I like tuna don't I and that's a safe choice' and get tuna (except in a particular cafe I go where the tuna is shit - straight from the can of tuna in brine - so there I always have cheese, tomato and onion on crusty white bread).

David (David), Sunday, 13 October 2002 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Fresh mozz., fresh basil, fresh hero roll. (Substitute basil with rare roast beef and you've also got an excellent sandwich.)

Jody Beth Rosen, Sunday, 13 October 2002 23:15 (twenty-three years ago)

These all sound delectable, but yesterday I had a sandwich of braised lamb shank (without the bone, obv.) with lettuce and tomato. So simple. SO delicious.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 14 October 2002 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

"Almost anything from the amazing Jewish or Italian delis back east.

About a month ago I went to a place called Harold's New York Deli in central New Jersey (mistyped: Jew Jersey), where they specialize in obscenely large portions of sandwich meat. If you order one sandwich, you're really ordering for 2-3 people, because they bring you a large platter of meat and direct you towards their bread/pickle bar, where you can take unlimited amounts of rye bread and several different types of pickles (incl. pickled tomatoes).

Their pastrami and corned beef is yum yum yum.

Jody Beth Rosen, Monday, 14 October 2002 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Only sandwiches I eat are the day after thanksgiving - crusty sourdough roll, turkey, thin spread of cranberry sauce, thin spread of mashed potatoes and thin spread of gravy. Repeat as necessary.

luna.c (luna.c), Monday, 14 October 2002 07:10 (twenty-three years ago)

chris (chris), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:20 (twenty-three years ago)

oo stuffing, yeah - I knew it seemed out of balance

luna.c (luna.c), Monday, 14 October 2002 09:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Do none of you make sandwiches for yourself??

Graham (graham), Monday, 14 October 2002 10:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate sandwiches generally, but lately I've found a good shop for tuna and sweetcorn. I made a sandwich for myself last week, chicken, melted cheese, salad cream and some gherkins, hooray for gherkins, they rescued it to be honest.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 14 October 2002 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Do none of you make sandwiches for yourself??

Yeah. I fill them with tuna/sweetcorn 'sandwich filler' from Iceland as you might expect from my earlier post.

David (David), Monday, 14 October 2002 11:10 (twenty-three years ago)

tuna sweetcorn is a classic combination. oh yeah!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 14 October 2002 11:11 (twenty-three years ago)

i had this totally wicked and expensive club sandwich tonight and i crave another

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite as a child: peanut butter, lettuce and mayonaisse. It did not make me popular - in fact may be the origin of being considered a freak. Now I like white tuna with laots of mayo on rye with potato chips inserted into the sandwich. Some things don't change.

aimurchie, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

As today is allegedly the birthday of the sandwich, let us celebrate.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

mmmm

Surmounter, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 13:59 (seventeen years ago)

This is really important.
I was just thinking about peanut butter, lettuce and mayo yesterday. it WAS my favorite - should I revisit and see if it is as yummy as I recall?

aimurchie, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

maybe i will splurge on a fancy sandwich for lunch!

tehresa, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

I had an Egg and Cress sandwich today, it was good.

Jarlrmai, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)

yesterday i had a sandwich with fresh basil on it. i always forget how good fresh basil is on a sandwich! if the right kind of sandwich (this sandwich was mozzarella, tomato & basil, grilled)

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

yesterday i bought some fresh basil but was too stuffed from burrito to use it. it's now sitting upright in a pint glass in my refrigerator.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

bbt: basil, bacon, tomato. add homemade mayo and serve on good bread. yum.

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

mmm

tehresa, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)

fresh herbs really make a big difference on sandwiches.
my favorite sandwich is a bahn mi with grilled pork and whatever that crazy head cheese type stuff is.

mizzell, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

either a "saigon-style" banh mi (basically any banh mi with pork and pate) or an Italian beef w/mozz and giardiniera on crusty garlic bread.

Granny Dainger, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)

all i want right now is a vietnamese sandwich but i work in the middle of no vietnamese restaurants land :(

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

i know... all this bahn mi talk is driving me nuts!

tehresa, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i'm at least 10 miles from even a half-decent one myself argh

Granny Dainger, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

ok, you know what? It's delish - PBL and M.

I think there is a difference between a sandwich -a convenient food choice that is good for a lunch box - and, y'know, crusty bread drizzled with olive oil with amazing ingredients.
I am sure this has been debated before, BUT...I love both. I just hate chewing when I'm hungry/rushed/hungover/hungry. I also tend to skip breakfast, so lunch becomes a very important meal that I start craving at 10:00 a.m.

I am also feeling upset about all of those vietnamese sandwiches that I can't have.
But they are not so different from a cold cut grinder, or even a cubano?

I can't chew in the morning. Is this weird?

aimurchie, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)

right now Katsu chicken w/ spicy mayo

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

tehresa, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

oh man, there aren't a lot of good vietnamese sandwich options here either. when i get up to the twin cities next month i'm getting pork banh mi + pineapple bread.

Jordan, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

...so can I say that there's a good enough Vietnamese sandwich spot just three minutes walk from where I work or will you all kill me?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

daaaamn pineapple bread!

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

what is pineapple bread???!!!

mizzell, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

It is exactly what you think it is.

Oh BTW, don't read this blog if you are craving food right now:

http://pineapplebread.wordpress.com/

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

i want to eat that blog

i have a salad for lunch :/

i think I'm just thinking about the meat combo in my sandwich comparison. Although the cubano has the pickles, which is similar to....

aimurchie, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

pineapple bread is what happens when you lock a whole pineapple and a loaf of bread in a room and don't let them out until they breed.

argh must go to chicago for trying of jibarito!

Ok. There's a really crazy sandwich - grinder, hero, sub - that my local italian place offers.

Get ready: Eggplant, ham, veal, two cheeses and whatever veggies you want. maybe peppers. All in a marinara melted cheese puddle of yum.

it MIGHT be the most politically incorrect sandwich ever. It's called "The Big John", after the owner of Nini's.

that doesn't sound like a crazy sandwich.

Boob sandwich; if this term doesn't exist I'm inventing it.

I love Vietnamese food but I've never had a banh mi. Do they make them to order usually? And will they leave off the cilantro without yelling at me?
