Do you regret your tatoos? I have 5, all tribals. Two on my right arm, one big one on my left arm, one on my back and one on my calve. Im 28 now and got most when I was 19-20. I regret one of them its just ugly.

Chris, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nto so much regret, but I do want to burn my ex girlfriends name off the rose i have on my right shoulder.

The Original Queen G, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"So let me get this straight...you want a tattoo of a butt on your butt with the tattoo of a butt on it."

Ned Raggett, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but..but..but.

Deadman, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

homemade looking scratchy reptile drawings RH wrist & LH bicep. no i don't regret them, i think they're good.

unknown or illegal user, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's now absolutely un-hip to have tatoos. So if you have them you're either a bold and dashing rebel, or a loser.

Fake!, Monday, 29 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I still want a heart on both of my heels, though.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo, Wednesday, 1 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am a bold and dashing loser, with three stars on my upper arm. Not bored of it yet, but it's only been a year... still, I was always keen on the idea of making at least one permanent choice in my otherwise undecided life.

Archel, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have seven rats dancing around my upper left arm. I designed it myself based on the border of an Arthur Rackham illustration for Cinderella - they are the rats that will be her train.

It still brings me great joy.

I love tattoos and I want another one or two. Respect to my pal Tash for having Stussy tattooed on her ankle!

misterjones, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My sister has gone to work in a alternative beauty parlour on a planet in a galaxy far far away.

Tattooine?

No, she specialises in piercings.

Pete, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nice

chris, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

tattos are real and permanent. i am fake and fickle. the 2 don't mix, y'know?

gareth, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm too fickle as well -- no matter how nice it turned out I know that a day or so after I'd had it done I'd either want it off or want something different, so I've never got one.

Nicole, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would like one, but can't afford it.

alix, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When I got mine there was a sign saying 'Price depends on design and customer attitude'. I took this to mean that if you were drunk or squirmy or wept hysterically they would charge you more? I was as good as gold but they still ripped me off I think. You're not in much of a position to haggle when a youth in a lumberjack shirt is wiping the blood off your arm.

Archel, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have 5... don't regret them. Having a brand name tattooed on yourself is beyond dud... unless the company gave you a wad of cash to do so. Even then it's dud.

Sean, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I dunno, I always thought the Kranky logo would be cool as a tattoo. Then again, one time I mistakenly thought that of the 4AD logo. Thankfully Creation's never crossed my mind.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my other ex gurlfriend has "nothing is permanent" tattoed on her foot.

QUeen G on the move, Friday, 3 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't even remember the Kranky logo. Was is a thumbs up or something?

N., Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It was...and is, you naughty person to suggest otherwise...this.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, I was making an obscure Krankies joke.

N., Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have eight tattoos my first one is a grim reaper, second one skulls forming a circle covered in smoke, third one a cross stuck through a rose, fourth one a black heart, fifth one a black panther, sixth one tribal, seventh one a feather and my last one the cure logo from their wish cd AHH Robert Smith from the Cure I love him he wears make-up I am obsessed with men in make-up well anyway I regret my grim reaper he looks like he is wearing a bath robe...

jean, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Robert Smith from the Cure I love him

Dan Perry and I approve unhesitatingly. Ignore any scoffers here who say otherwise.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like N.'s Krankies joke. I have a tattoo on the sole of my foot. It's of a freckle. I was thinking of getting one which says 'my other girlfriend's a porsche', but wasn't sure where to put it.

Ally C, Saturday, 4 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Where did my rant go???

I have five. I want twice as many more. I've been holding off on getting half-sleeved since teaching and tattoos don't go hand in hand.

I knew someone who had a heart that read "Her Name". Genius.

If you think that tattoos were once "hip and cool" and have since fallen out of fashion, then you DON'T HAVE A FUCKING CLUE!!! You should not speak of which you do not know.

S., Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am obsessed with men in make-up

Maria to thread!

Sean, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maria's been at the thread but has no opinion whatsoever on tattoos.

Maria, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No tatoos. No regrets. I'd get bored with one within months. The regular site of a badly drawn peacock turning green on my ex was rather off-putting, to say the least.

Was there any truth behind that recent 'tatoo ink causes cancer' scare/panic?

stevo, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My mother tried to tell me I would get cancer from tattoo's. She failed to mention the 2 packs a day that I smoke could possibly assist with that as well.

Chris, Monday, 6 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one month passes...
hi all! When i turned 40 last year i got the first and only tatoo i own!! I got the usda grade A logo on my butt!! I always wanted it but was a little embarrased to get it,, my point is i still think its cool to have one. fashions do change so make sure what you like' remember it is permanent!!!!.........dave

dave c., Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

in reality, doorag's tattoos are very crap. but funny.

queenoftheharpies, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm shocked I didn't answer this thread, damn.

Ally, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dude that dave c. guy posts like gale.

queenoftheharpies, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For ages I've thought about getting a tattoo, but still haven't done it. The image I'd like to get is a black cat (actually, the same picture of a cat that Ally has up on Bitchcakes), on the instep of my left foot.

j.lu, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

One. A scarecrow on my left arm. A friend of mine from college did it. It was his first tattoo. He said he'd take me to Bob Roberts, the big tattoo artist in NYC at the time, if he fucked it up. He did a fine job, but it's totally faded now and I like it like that, though I've pretty much forgotten I have it. Until I go visit my family and we go to the beach--then they're all SHOCKED. Over and over and over again, it's been happening for 20 years.

Arthur, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hey harpie, what do you mean i post like gale??.........dave

dave c., Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my tattoos are not 'crap'!

, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

they are 'significant'

, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

unknown or illegal user, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Justin Settles, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

four months pass...
I have 5 - a tribal sun on my inside right ankle, celtioc crescent moon on inside left, a heart of flowers (how girly!) on the outside left and a tribal butterfly with a character that means 'remember' on the back of my right (for my godson who died nearly 4 years ago) - also a teeny dragon's head on the back of my right shoulder which I don't like anymore

luna.c (luna.c), Monday, 14 October 2002 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd really like to have tattoos on my arms, shoulders, and ankles. But there are two problems with my wishes... one is legit, the other is just weak.

LEGIT REASON: I can't honestly think of any image that I can imagine never wanting to part with in the future. A lot of tattoo ideas I had even just two years ago seem really naive and silly in retrospect.

WEAK REASON: everyone says getting a tattoo hurts like a motherfucker. I don't like pain. I'm a wuss. I wish I could get a non-permanent simulation of a tattoo application, just so I know what it's like, and lay it to rest.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 14 October 2002 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

i have one, a biggie, on my hip to distract from major scar. i designed it with help from the tattoo artist, and i like it.
got plans for another somewhere, just have to decide where. and yes, it HURT donut.
but you get over it.

donna (donna), Monday, 14 October 2002 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a Keith Haring Radiant Baby on my left shoulder; outline is black, fill-color red. It's patchy because I couldn't quit picking at the scabs when it was healing (d'oh) and I need to get it filled in at some point...or so I've been saying for 7 years now w/o actually doing.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 14 October 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

im thinking of going to get another one....its a tough decision.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

tatoos are boring.

draw on your self with a Sharpie!! its fun, u can scribble and draw squares or write "I've been poisoned" or "delirious and obsessive play" or label all yr body parts or make a blind contour drawing of yr cat on yr chest.

making art with the idea of permanence in mind IS PARALYZING.

gabriel (gabe), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

wow. uhm, this man stole my words:

"our situations will be ephemeral, without a future: passageways. the permanence of art or anything else does not enter into our considerations, which are serious. eternity is the grossest idea a person can conceive of in connection with his acts..." --guy debord.

(yay appropriate quote yay)

gabriel (gabe), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I have recently joined the many millions of people that have tattoo's. My tattoo took me over a year to choose. I carried the picture in my purse all that time until i was absolutely positive.

My tatoo represents my personality. Corney i know. Mine is a picture of Tinkerbell from Peter Pan. She represents cheekiness, a little stubborness but most of all playfulness.

Well at least when i am 50 or so My children and grandchildren will certainly know who "TinkerBell" is

Sxylgs, Tuesday, 22 October 2002 08:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Who is Tinkerbell?

Sam (chirombo), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 08:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm getting two new ones this weekend on my back. Bluebirds of Happiness. Yeah, Im a bad mother fucker.

http://bitchcakes.topcities.com/images/tattoo1.jpg http://bitchcakes.topcities.com/images/result.jpg

There are more but no pictures of them. Not that I can show online at least.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:22 (twenty-three years ago)

you can see most of mine on the what do you look like thread. and getting me to take my shirt off and show people my back is going to take some booze and Adam Ant.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got both, what time?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

My great uncle Hank, who has tattoos from when he was in the Navy during WW2, told me once "tattoos are for assholes."

hstencil, Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I blame you Hstencil for mine. Whens the next train to NYC leaving, ally?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Like in 35 minutes, Chris. Kings of the Wild Frontier or Prince Charming?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

The one with "Strip" on it. I'll come dressed as a pirate.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

That's Friend or Foe, and you're on. I have a pirate wench shirt.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

My wife won't mind, I'll tell her its for "business". I look too nu-meatl though and I'm a tweeist. Thats why the bluebirds of happiness.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 13:06 (twenty-three years ago)

For some reason, whenever my male friends hang out with me, they're always telling their wives they're on business or they're out with their guy buddies. I'm getting a complex.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

"Nu meatl": best genre EVER!

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't find the photo. The four symbols on my page, on the menu sidebar there (not the journal and email buttons), are on my left forearm in black.

When I publish my first novel, I'm going to tattoo the barcode from it somewhere on me (right arm, I figure), just cause I've always said I would.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I still have 5... I sometimes wish I didn't have any now though, since unmarked skin looks so nice. Most guys tell me how much they like them though, so it's cool. Since I can never go back to having none, I'm sure I'll end up getting a bunch more at some point.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

My ex-wife had a chain of flowers tattooed around her ankle, not unlike yours, Ally.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 16 April 2003 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Mine actually doesn't go all the way around!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 April 2003 01:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I finally got the one I'd been wanting for ten years, a month or so ago. I'm very happy with it. (It's the brick from "Krazy Kat," in mid-flight, on my back.)

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 17 April 2003 03:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I just got my sixth one. And I'm happy to say that none of them are flowers.

My artist is drawing up my next two, a lower back piece and a half sleeve for my left arm. I'll have enough $$ saved up for the back piece in the next 6 weeks.

Tattos rule. I'll have new pictures available soon.

That Girl (thatgirl), Thursday, 17 April 2003 04:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Like I said, I'd post pics of mine, but I ain't taking my shirt off for you guys. Unless a beer gut does it for you. After the bluebirds are done, maybe....

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 17 April 2003 10:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a big purple and green fishscale paisley on my right shoulder. So even when I'm naked, I'm still wearing paisley! I don't regret it, but mainly because I drew the design that I wanted out on a sheet of paper, and stuck it up over my bed. I looked at it every night before I went to sleep and every morning when I woke up for over a year, so I knew I wouldn't get sick of it.

I'm really glad that I've always done that. Cause there are a lot of things I *wanted* to get tattooed on me (you know, band logos, flying skulls puking bats, etc.) that I got sick of really fast and would have regretted.

But I love my tattoo. It's got a little tiny ankh in the middle of it as well. :-)

kate, Thursday, 17 April 2003 10:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally, did you chicken out part way through? My ex always said it was very, very painful - the tattooist explained that doing bony places is much the worst. (In case that sounds like an insult, I might mention that I will never be tattooed due to fear.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

My tattoo is in between my shoulder blades, and when the needle was right on my spine my fingers and toes started shaking! Not pleasant.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Martin, the design is only meant to go halfway around. I didn't find it painful at all. Though the problem I have is that I had a scar on my ankle, and the color didn't take right there, so I'm going to have to get it touched up sooner or later.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, yes yancey the one on my back now is down my spine. It quite possibly was the worst pain I ever felt. No stopping me from the two new ones though. The band on my arm does not go all the way around. I made the guy stop. Pinch the skin on the inside of your arm. Does that feel good? No.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Mine took about three hours to complete. Ugh.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

2 for mine.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I've thought for a long time about getting two bands around my forearm, but it's pricey, paneful, and I fear gareth's answer upthread is otm in my case.

Look cool, tho.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

You guys are total wusses, I have one on the back of my neck, it covers like all of the back of my neck, and that didn't even hurt a bit.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

My one humble tattoo and the planned second one are described here:
http://www.mushrush.com/blogfat/archives/000074.shtml

I don't regret it even though I've been instructed by my doctor to "cool it on the coffee drinking thing" (and I have actually followed those orders in spite of its being counterproductive for my image.)

Mine didn't really hurt and took about two and a half hours. (Simple design but lots of black.)

martin mushrush (mushrush), Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

this is my left arm:
http://www.manowarkingsofmetal.com/fans/fan7.jpg
right arm:
http://home.swipnet.se/~w-72373/images/eddie.jpg

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 17 April 2003 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Depending on the part of the body, size and color they can hurt quite a bit or they can just be uncomfortable.

Indeed bony places are the worse. Arms (like upper) are nothing. The one on the back of my neck was most uncomfortable b/c the needle kept going over my spine and I felt it all in my skull.

The 3 I have on my back hurt the most, less fat, more nerves. All black also hurt worse as they dig in deeper with black ink than they do with color.

That Girl (thatgirl), Thursday, 17 April 2003 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

The only tattoos my nerdy ass can imagine getting are ones that look like the kind of stuff they stencil onto aircraft. You know, like those stickers that come with model kits - EGRESS ONLY, NO STEP, lots of little arrows and boxes and big capital sans-serif labels for everything. Of course I have neither the money or the fortitude to undergo such a life-changing process, and my father's threat to take a belt sander to any ink I get done still resonates seven years later.

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 17 April 2003 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Martin S. (and others)--it's really not especially painful, in my experience. The type & level of pain involved was basically like what happens when I abrade myself shaving with an electric razor.

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 18 April 2003 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes but Douglas do you abrade yourself over and over in the same spot for an hour?

That Girl (thatgirl), Friday, 18 April 2003 03:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, sometimes I get bored and do stuff like that.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 April 2003 04:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have tatoos but I'll consider it when/if I gather enough information on how I could make them useful somehow; like in that cronenberg movie crash where a guy had medical tatoos to indicate the certain coordinates of his anatomy. I will also need to know what should be my ideal body mass index to make the tatoos relevant even in my old age. Like, what are the odds i'll ever be a victim of medical malpractice within my lifetime right? ... shit happens i might have an accident and need to be cut open pronto by a drunk surgeon who is pissed because he was forced to be relocated at the mediocre hospital near the place where i had my accident and his wife is leaving him on top of all this etc, might as well put all the chances on my side you know what I mean? (actually these tatoos could freak him out and aggrave my situation...)

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Friday, 18 April 2003 05:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Douglas, it's less about the amount of pain I imagine it would involve and more about the fact that I have a phobia about needles. It takes all of what little mental strength I have to have necessary medical injections.

Also, I kind of like tattoos on women but not on men. On men it just seems to fit with horrible old-fashioned machismo, whereas with women it's rebelling against being girly. This oversimplifies, of course, but it's why I wouldn't want one even if painless.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

There is no way on God's green Earth I could get a tattoo, although I want one because ... well, because I do. My picture in the "What do you look like" thread shows off a fake ankle tattoo a tattooist friend gave me ... I wanted him to give me a new fake one every week, but he was averse to the idea for some reason. *sigh*

jewelly (jewelly), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

the only thing I'll say about getting a tattoo is that it doesn't hurt anywhere near as much as you think it will*

(*the opinions expressed here are those of a tattoo junkie - what the hell do I know?)

luna (luna.c), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

God, I've really wanted a tattoo for a few years and know basically the kind of thing I want (something black and stark and semi-abstract looking), but nothing really good has presented itself, and I can't draw worth shit. Any designer people in here?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Go talk to some artists (tattoo artists I mean) Jordan. Good ones will have a lot of good ideas and if you tell them you're basic leaning, they could probably draw up something cool you would have never thought of.

That Girl (thatgirl), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a good test anyway -- if they can't do that, you should find a different place to get a tattoo, since it's probably because there's some other place in town hiring the really good artists. I hung around a place for ten hours once, waiting for friends of friends to get their tats done, and half of what the guys working there spent their time on was helping people figure out what they wanted, and getting it drawn just right.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 18 April 2003 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't have any and i find them a bit of a turn off really (note to prospective mates: if i like everything else about you then you should be fine), but if i had to get one it'd be this:

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I still think it would be fun to get "L-E-F-T" tattooed on each of the toe-knuckles on both of my feet. Like the LOVE and HATE finger tattooes.

I think I might regret that one once I stop laughing about it though.

martin mushrush (mushrush), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I was quite close to getting one once I decided on what image I wanted, but the cooling-off period I gave myself, uh, cooled me off, and I don't think it's worth getting one right now as I don't *really* want it.

I also never found an extant version of the design I wanted, so I think I'd have to get someone to mock one up for me. Maybe in the future.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 18 April 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

... and just in case any of you are interested (though I can understand it if you aren't), I still don't have any tattoos on me. Probably won't get any. Have a reputation and an image to uphold. ;)

(No, seriously, they don't really interest me aside from the whole "forbidden fruit" cachet they have.)

What's that Kenan? Can't quite make it out in the photo.

mei (mei), Sunday, 11 January 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

It's open to interpretation. I've resolved not to explain it anymore. It does no good.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 11 January 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It looks like two superheroes or monsters fighting.

Right after I turned 18, for a variety of very bad reasons, I got a peace sign tattoo on my left arm. Thankfully it's small enough to get covered up someday.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 11 January 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I read this thread backwards so when I came to gabriel's post with the guy debord quote ["our situations will be ephemeral, without a future: passageways. the permanence of art or anything else does not enter into our considerations, which are serious. eternity is the grossest idea a person can conceive of in connection with his acts..."] I thought it would be in reply to an attitude along the lines of someone not wanting tatts because of their lastingness, because me I never really understand that arguement (in a personal way) because they still seem quite fleeting to me just because y're gonna die after not too long anyway.
I figured out last year what I want for a tattoo, not exactly, but I want a picture of a thylacine (tasmanian tiger) on my right forearm (underside). Probably just black. Wish I knew a tattooist though, I'm nervous about hanging about trying to figure out pictures with them if it comes to that; I mean at what stage do you start paying them, I don't know the conventions etc.

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Sunday, 11 January 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

to the people with tats:
what does it *mean* to you?
-is it because they are normal in the crowd you hang out with?
-are they a status symbol, proof you can stand the pain?
-because "cool" people have tattoos?
-rebellion against parents/conventional social expectations?
-functional: e.g. gang-related, prison tattoos, injection tatoos?
-bad decision on a dare/drunk etc?
-because they are like any other fashion accessory, like a necklace or bracelet?
-for men, because it made you look like a tough dude?

seriously when you really think about it, why did you get a tattoo?

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

don't you think any women would get them to look tuff(er)?

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"really wanna know" huh? looks like yr mind is made up already with all those negative reasons.
Aesthetic reasons (untethered to fashion) don't occur to you?

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno. that is why i asked.

obv. if those are the reasons *I* can think of and there are other ones out there, i am missing something. tell me what it is. i'm not trying to be an asshole here. i am genuinely baffled.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

how are aestheics when decorating the body unrelated to fashion??!!

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a large number of tattoos, orbit, and none of my reasons for getting them are on your list. When I got my first tattoo it felt like I was moving into a new house and decorating, making it mine. I don't have a lot of permanence in my life, I've moved around a lot, lost a lot of people close to me, and my tattoos are my familiarity. They mean that people recognise me even if they don't know me (I live in a small country). I have also found that they give me confidence, as they project the confident side of my personality rather than the quiet mouse side; people think I must be filled with confidence if I can make such a public artwork of myself. So I become confident. People talk to me about them, all kinds of people from old ladies to young gang members, they're a good icebreaker.
As a shy young girl I used to hate my body but as I have illustrated and improved each body part with artwork I find I like that part of me more and will show it off in public without shame.
Cuspidorian, most tattooists are very approachable when it comes to working on designs with you. Take a sample pic or idea in with you when you book your work and discuss it with the artist then. Most tattooists are also artists in their own right and will have more experience when it comes to skewing perspective on pics to suit your body etc. They usually won't charge you for emending your pic but may start charging if they need to spend a lot of time on preparing your artwork. But they should tell you how much to expect to pay for the whole shebang at the time of booking. Where are you? I know a lot of tattooists and can maybe help you find a friendly one....

julep, Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Orbit the aesthetics of tattoos can be entirely unrelated to fashion! Do you really think that people are that shallow and non-forward-looking?!

julep, Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The tattoo I have doesn't mean much, other than serving to remind me of part of my past.

One that I've been thinking of - Paul Simonon smashing his bass from the cover of London Calling, is about something I love (music), something that's had an impact on my life (the Clash), and because, done right it's a powerful graphic image.

"everyone" knows??? Come on.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Well Orbit I was kinda joking, but the fact that people are intrigued by your art and want to see more means that tattoos make people think about your body ..... so um sex is on their mind uhhuh.
You are very defensive considering you posted such an interesting list of what YOU obviously think would be crazy old tattooed people's reasons for getting inked. My mind is narrow? Bbbbut I'm here engaging an UNINKED, UNINFORMED INTERNET MESSAGEBOARD POSTER in conversation and trying to explain my reasons for getting tattooed. You maybe didn't even read my original post which lays out some pretty different motivations to what YOU HAD ASSUMED (in YOUR head).
Also 'tattoos get you sex' is a pretty common slogan/poster/bumper sticker..........................

julep, Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

you are more interested in attacking the questioner than answering the question, and it's pretty obv. that my ignorant list made YOU defensive.
at least i was asking an honest question.
i didn't say the things in my list were TRUE , I was asking IF they were and if not, what WAS true.
you however, are behaving like a troll.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 11 January 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

um I thought I was answering honestly and in a friendly fashion.
as far as I can see this is the most 'offensive' and attacking thing I've said and it was menat to be tongue-in-cheek: (especilly orbit who doth protest too much methinks)

this = you:
pose question with obvious bias

julep, Monday, 12 January 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a tattoo because of the crowd I hang out with.
Oh wait, I don't have any friends.
I got it because it's a status symbol and proof I can stand the pain.
Oh wait, everyone's got a tattoo, so it's not a status symbol, and it didn't hurt very much.
I got it because "cool" people have tattoos.
Yeah, like Anthony Kiedis and Tommy Lee. Awesome.
I got it to rebel against my parents and conventional social expectations.
Oh wait, my parents don't know and tattoos have essentially becom a social expectation for someone of my age and temperament.
I got it because it's functional.
Oh wait, it's not.
I got because I was on a drunken dare.
Oh wait, no, I didn't.
I got it because it's a fashion accessory.
Oh wait, I'm the least fashionable person ever.
I got it because it makes me look tough.
Oh wait, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

julep, Monday, 12 January 2004 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean (Sean), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Not having a tattoo is the new having a tattoo.

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 12 January 2004 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I come from a heavily-tattooed country so maybe i have a different attitude towards them than you americanos.
i wasn't looking for a fight, btw, boo hoo.
x-post with broheems: very true, anyone who does it to stand out these days mustnt get out much

julep, Monday, 12 January 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty much ambivalent towards tattoos with the caveat that a tattoo on the small of a girl's back is really fucking hot.

oops (Oops), Monday, 12 January 2004 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the first one i got was to mark my graduation from college.

I also got one to mark my leavin texas, another for leaving nyc, and the most recent as a tribute to elliott smith.

the other three: one was a character from Tao Te Ching that I liked a lot but I'm currently planning a coverup; another is a lotus blossom on the back of my neck that I got to remind me that no matter what kind of shit I've come from I can still bloom; and one that's the logo of my favorite band, people I've been friends with for a decade.

So at this point all the ones i've gotten have usually been to mark an event or pay tribute to something in my life. I've totally gone into them asethicaclly though. TAttoos are like a map of your personality laid out on flesh. I love people who have them (and I mean folx who have tons not just a couple of pansy ones) b/c there's always such interesting stories behind them.

currently i'm planning to half-sleeve my left arm and that's a big move. can't wait.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 12 January 2004 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The tribal sun I got reminds me that the sun ever rises - also that my son is my sun.

The moon because everyone has a dark side and needs yang to their yin. Also, I'm a cancer = moonchild.

The heart of flowers because it was pretty, and the chain is unbroken - a symbol of love.

The lotus on my back - because as with Sam's, no matter how much shit I endure, I can still rise above it and bloom.

The dragon's head for strength and courage; and

the butterfly with a symbol that means 'remember', I got in remembrance of my godson who died at 2 1/2 - he loved butterflies and he's always a part of my heart.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 12 January 2004 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, the guy on the street meets me with blank looks when I explain my tattoo, but maybe you guys won't. It's all far more crudely rendered than I had hoped, but the figure in the middle is the angel who guards the gates to the Garden of Eden, and the figure on the right is a man trying to kick his ass. He wants back in, you see. It's an illustration from a 60's anthology of SF titled "Again, Dangerous Visions" edited by Harlan Ellison. The story it goes with is titled "Time Travel for Pedestrians," and is about a man metaphorically trying to fight his way back into the Garden through opium and... um... masturbation.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 12 January 2004 07:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 12 January 2004 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Not having a tattoo is the new having a tattoo.

This sort of attitude strangely irks me a bit, this whole "you know, not rebelling is the new 'rebelling'" thing. I don't know exactly why it does, but it strikes me as being a bit condescending, like it's saying, "Ooh, you'll definitely stir up a sea of attention by looking like and living as though you stepped out of some 1950s sitcom," when I know for sure that I would, for example, have my attention grabbed by someone who looks more like they belong in this decade than I would by someone who looks more, um, like me.

For me, the presence of a tattoo is still more noticeable than the absence of one. This is not because of my country of origin; this is because I know I'd be disowned by my mother if I got one, so few of my relatives and [offline] friends actually have one, and because a tiny little segment of my mind desires one as a means of breaking out of this real-life role I've seemed to assign myself. So maybe I am a big freak, but because of thoughts instead of deeds.

Where's Pluto? And why's Venus bigger than the Earth?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Pluto is the un-filled star near the left edge. The other little star just below it is Charon, they make a binary planet I think.

The little stars abve and below mars are Phobos and Demos.

In the real world, stars and planets are both spheres.
I've chosen circles or star-shapes depending on which looks nice, and that says something about how art represents things quite symbolically. There's no particular reason I should draw the sun as a star-shape and the Earth, say, as a circle, apart from tradition.

(Planets might twinkle like stars when you see them!)

mei (mei), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Gotcha - I was being too literal about the star-shape thing. And I guess Earth has to be a little smaller to accomodate the moon. Nice design.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

This is (one version of) the flag of the Republic of Venice. I want to turn the lion into a tattoo - not an exact representation, as the flag had many different designs, but a slightly stylised version thereof in burgundy and gold. Do you think it's feasible?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know all that much about tattoos, but I reckon you can.
Mine was hard for them to do cos of all the straight lines and circles but you should be fine with that.

The way it worked for me is they traced over my drawing (actually a print from photoshop - it's got a steadier hand than me!) using carbon paper then pressed it onto my body, then tattood over the blue carbon ink.

I'd say keep it fairly simple and not too small and you'll be fine.

i've designed the next tat i'm getting. . .hopefully in the next couple of months.

my new boy, T., has a NOLA tat which kind of inspired me.

it's the dallas skyline with "East Dallas" written above and below it in an arc, and "Assassination City" written in script over the skyline.

can't fucking wait to get it.

"Assassination City"?!? Lucky you won't be a teacher any more, setting an examplem like that ;)

I used to read those Jim comics, haven't seen any around for a while though. Apparently if you sent him five words describing yourself he'd send you back a drawing of your soul or something along those lines...
anyway, great tattoo.

You know, I really think I do. That Christina Aguilera has a lot to answer for. Her and the god damn Apostle St. Paul.

I have 9 tatoos and I would not give them up for anything. There is one on my upper right arm, two on my upper left arm, two on my upper right leg, and one on my upper left leg. My ex did all of mine and I could not be more happier with them. I plan to get most of my body done before I past to the next life.

We're almost done with school, the highs are in the 80s and my attitude is 'fuck it'. I'm wearing a short-sleeved tee and letting my big armpiece show to the world.

Like tattoos could corrupt these kids. . .
