"This is not shared sacrifice," fumed the Working Families Party's Dan Cantor. "The governor proposes to balance the budget in an imbalanced way - by raising taxes on the middle class while simultaneously reducing the services we all rely on."
The WFP favors an income tax surcharge on upper-income state residents, as backed by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan). Some observers strongly suspected yesterday that Paterson laid out a less populistic array of tax and fee hikes knowing that he could end up trading them for just this kind of broader-based tax hike.

The cabinet official who supervises the State Police has resigned in the wake of reports of intervention by the State Police and Gov. David A. Paterson into a domestic-assault case against a senior Paterson aide.
The official, Denise E. O’Donnell, commissioner of the state Division of Criminal Justice Services, issued a statement Thursday after inquiries from The New York Times.
“The fact that the governor and members of the State Police have acknowledged direct contact with a woman who had filed for an order of protection against a senior member of the governor’s staff is a very serious matter,” she wrote. “These actions are unacceptable regardless of their intent.”
The resignation, at 2 p.m., came on a day when New York’s political establishment reeled at the news of Mr. Paterson’s involvement, with some of the beleaguered governor’s few remaining allies publicly suggesting that he should end his campaign for election.
Ms. O’Donnell, a former federal prosecutor and social worker, wrote that she found the breach “particularly distressing” in an administration “that prides itself on its record of combating domestic violence.
“The behavior alleged here is the antithesis of what many of us have spent our entire careers working to build,” she added, “a legal system that protects victims of domestic violence and brings offenders to justice.”

A leading women’s rights group that had once praised Gov. David A. Paterson for his work on violence against women is now seeking his resignation, saying his intervention in a domestic violence case involving a top adviser was inappropriate and disappointing.
The New York chapter of the National Organization for Women issued the call for Mr. Paterson’s resignation on Tuesday morning, after The New York Times reported that the governor had directed two state officials to reach out to a woman who had accused Mr. Paterson’ senior adviser, David W. Johnson, of assaulting her.
“This latest news is very disappointing for those of us who believed the governor was a strong advocate for women’s equality and for ending violence against women,” said Marcia A. Pappas, the group’s president. “We at the National Organization for Women-New York State believe that in spite of the governor’s heretofore excellent record on women’s issues, it is now time for the governor to step down.”
The New York National Organization for Women, an influential player in the Democratic Party, had previously expressed concern only about Mr. Paterson’s involvement in the case, but it had stopped short of asking him to leave office.

NEW YORK -- Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand says Gov. David Paterson would have to resign if allegations that he abused his power are proven true.
Associated PressDemocratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who was appointed by Gov. Paterson, says the governor should step down if power was abused. Paterson's role in a domestic abuse case against a top aide is being investigated by state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. The New York Times on Tuesday reported that the governor had personally directed two state employees to contact the woman who made the complaint.
Paterson supporters say there is more to the story.
Gillibrand told NY1 that if the allegations are true, then the governor will be unable to govern and will have to step down.
Paterson appointed Gillibrand to her Senate seat more than a year ago when Hillary Rodham Clinton became secretary of state.

ALBANY, N.Y. — New York Gov. David Paterson, trying to hold onto office in the face of one scandal, was accused Wednesday of violating state ethics laws when he sought and obtained free Yankees tickets for the 2009 World Series and then may have lied about his intention to pay for them, according to a state report.
He faces penalties of nearly $100,000, and the case was referred to the Albany County prosecutor's office and the state attorney general for possible criminal investigation into whether Paterson — "or anyone else" — gave false answers to commission questions or backdated a check to pay for the tickets.
The charge isn't directly related to the scandal now plaguing Paterson over contact he and others in his adminstration had with a woman who accused a top Paterson aide of domestic violence. But the Public Integrity Commission said the aide in the scandal, David Johnson, was one of Paterson's four guests getting tickets for the Oct. 28 World Series game provided by the Yankees.
Four days later, also in the Bronx, Johnson was accused of domestic violence by his then-girlfriend, a case that now threatens Paterson's job and administration.
Paterson could face a penalty of $80,000 for violating the state gift ban for elected officials. The commission's investigation also charged that Paterson violated a provision prohibiting the governor from using his official position to secure unwarranted privileges. That could cost another $10,000.
There was no immediate comment from the governor's office.

Gov. David A. Paterson will be governor on Friday. After that? He will not say.
As Mr. Paterson ducked out of a side entrance to the Yale Club in Midtown Manhattan on Thursday afternoon, he offered a simple “yes” when asked if he would still be governor on Friday.
But when asked whether he would be governor next week, the governor was silent. He ignored other questions posed by a group of reporters who trailed him as a small coterie of his aides hustled him into a waiting Chevrolet Suburban.
The vehicle then drove off, heading east on 44th Street.
Mr. Paterson was at the Yale Club on Thursday having lunch in the rooftop dining room with former Mayor David N. Dinkins and a 13-year-old boy who is blind.
Mr. Dinkins said as he was leaving the club that he does not believe Mr. Paterson should resign. “What’s to be served by trying to force him from office now?”
Outside the Yale Club’s rarefied air, however, it was another day of difficult news for the governor.
Mr. Paterson’s communications director, Peter E. Kauffmann, announced his resignation on Thursday, saying that he could not “in good conscience” continue in his job. He has been with the governor for just over a year.
A report issued on Wednesday by the New York State Commission on Public Integrity concluded that Mr. Paterson lied under oath while testifying about his acceptance of free tickets to the first game of the World Series last fall. The report also stated that while Mr. Paterson testified that he always planned to pay for the tickets and had taken a check with him to the game for that purpose, he told Mr. Kauffmann the opposite.
In his testimony, Mr. Kauffmann stated that the governor said he did not have to pay for the tickets because he was attending the game in his official capacity as governor.

Nader on Governor Andy's blade:
During his campaign for Governor, Mr. Cuomo refused to even contemplate keeping the $14 billion (some estimate higher amounts) a year that the state collects from a century-old stock transfer tax, but instantly rebates, what is really a sales tax, back to the stock brokers. New York used to keep this tax revenue until the early Eighties, when Wall Street pressure finally prevailed. Green Party candidate for Governor, Howie Hawkins, during a public debate argued that keeping these revenues would eliminate the deficit and prevent the reduction of necessary programs. On that stage, Mr. Cuomo refused to engage. Mum's the word on Wall Street's fair share.
Cuomo calls himself "a progressive Democrat who's broke." A progressive Democrat would push for sacrifice at the wealthy top and work down if necessary. Many of the wealthy derived their billions and millions from many favored policies like tax leniency and other privileges and immunities including violation of the law (some of whom Cuomo pursued as Attorney General.)

“The Assembly will pick a leader, and the Senate will pick a leader. And I have no intention of getting involved in either situation,” Cuomo said at a press conference last week, while underscoring that he thought Democrats learned a lesson the last time they were in control of the Senate. “I think they learned the hard way. The Democrats were in power. The Democrats then lost power because of the dysfunction and I think they learned that lesson the hard way.”

Marie Andytoinette
With Albany rocked by a seemingly endless barrage of scandals and arrests, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo set up a high-powered commission last summer to root out corruption in state politics. It was barely two months old when its investigators, hunting for violations of campaign-finance laws, issued a subpoena to a media-buying firm that had placed millions of dollars’ worth of advertisements for the New York State Democratic Party.
The investigators did not realize that the firm, Buying Time, also counted Mr. Cuomo among its clients, having bought the airtime for his campaign when he ran for governor in 2010.
Word that the subpoena had been served quickly reached Mr. Cuomo’s most senior aide, Lawrence S. Schwartz. He called one of the commission’s three co-chairs, William J. Fitzpatrick, the district attorney in Syracuse.
“This is wrong,” Mr. Schwartz said, according to Mr. Fitzpatrick, whose account was corroborated by three other people told about the call at the time. He said the firm worked for the governor, and issued a simple directive:
“Pull it back.”
...In a 13-page statement responding to The Times’s questions, Mr. Cuomo’s office defended its handling of the commission. It said the commission was created by and reported to the governor, and therefore he could not be accused of interfering with it.

Cuomo to blunt a blistering report detailing how his administration meddled with an anti-corruption panel, records show. The state Democratic Campaign Committee spent $281,655 for ads that began airing July 19, one day after the governor’s office learned The New York Times was going to print a lengthy story about how Cuomo aides compromised the workings of the Moreland Commission panel.

He played the "WEP" card well after the endorsement though, and if they withdrew their endorsement or violated the terms of the agreement by appearing unsupportive of Reptile Face, he could retract his commitment to pass the Women's Equality Agenda, the NYS DREAM Act, raise the minimum wage, etc, AND bring the IDC back. The WFP leadership weighed how many people's lives that would change and decided if they could hold him accountable to those commitments it would be worth it.
Basically now that he agreed to all those progressive issues he's trying to break them so they CAN'T hold him accountable, ie having his cake for free and ordering a hit on the baker he ordered it from.

― things lose meaning over time (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 November 2014 18:20 (nine years ago) link
I think Prop 2 is just a bit of house keeping, something about how the countdown for how long they have to read a proposed bill before it comes to a vote will start from when the email is sent instead of when paper copies are distro'ed. Will prob result in legislators assigning a staffer to print it out for them as soon as the email comes through and that's assuming anyone was reading proposed legislation anyway.

A frustrated labor union source said that in the end, Cuomo is just being Cuomo.
“The mayor arranged a forced marriage between the base and him,” said the union source, who has helped with the Democratic effort to win the Senate. “This is what happens when you get into an arranged marriage. It doesn’t always work out.”

That's actually why it's marginally meaningful, because Working Families is supposed to be this *insider progressive* party that works with the dems to make sure progressive issues get pushed (or just uses false promises to keep progressives from defecting away from the dems entirely, depending on how you look at it).
― my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 5 November 2014 20:05 (nine years ago) link
I mean with Cuomo winning 52-39, it's not of enormous significance, but in a closer D-R race, the number of progressives who vote for the dem on the Working Families line vs vote for a third party candidate could make the difference.

Wayne Barrett, who wrote fine muckraking columns for the Voice when it was a newspaper, on Dean Skelos et al:
With all the focus on Shelly Silver and his Assembly apparatchiks, let’s not forget New York’s state Senate, where four of the last five majority leaders have been indicted and the fifth, Dean Skelos, is reportedly under investigation....
The swamp is so deeply bi-partisan that Democrat (Malcolm) Smith was bribing Republican county leaders to get the Republican line, Democrat (Pedro) Espada was initially installed as leader by Republicans, and (Joe) Bruno, who claimed years ago that Silver’s outside income inspired his own consulting career, just derided Silver’s prosecutors as “out of control.”
...It is comforting to note that local comedian Al Sharpton hosted new speaker Heastie at his National Action Network over the weekend and declared that any attempt to change the three-men-in-a-room nirvana in Albany would now be seen as racist. Along with a prayer blessing for Heastie, Sharpton issued a threat: “If you mess with Carl, you’re messing with us.”
“Don’t talk about breaking up the trio now. We just got into the trio,” Sharpton said, forgetting that Smith, Sampson and ex-governor David Paterson were recently part of the three, actually outnumbering white men at one point. It’s hard to believe Sharpton might’ve forgotten Paterson, Smith and (John) Sampson, since all were involved with him in the Aqueduct scandal, with Sharpton collecting $100,000 in NAN contributions from bidders on the $3 billion, 30-year racino contract, the richest in state history.
We haven’t heard from the Greeks yet about what they will do if they lose their man in the room, Dean Skelos, the state senator from Rockville Centre in Long Island who succeeded Bruno. Hemlock is always an option. Jonathan Dienst, the Emmy-Award winning WNBC reporter who broke the Skelos story, says Bharara is investigating the majority leader’s ties to the real estate industry....

Hi Friend, The Big Blue Tide is rising. The more Trump acts, the stronger we get. We will take our country back. SIGN UP HERE TO BE A PART OF OUR EFFORT! We are targeting every Republican-held Congressional seat in the state this year, with an unprecedented unified, coordinated effort. Victories in New York can help us retake the House - a much needed check on Trump’s extreme agenda in Washington. And, in the New York State Senate, we are less than 50 days away from D-Day - "Declare Day” - April 24th. On that day, there are two State Senate special elections to fill empty seats, and Democrats will win both. At that point, Democrats will constitute a majority of the State Senate. Once that happens, the Governor has said that the IDC members must join the Democratic Caucus. If the IDC members do not join the Democratic Caucus and form a majority, the Democratic Party will lead an aggressive primary against every IDC member and assure we have a True Blue State Senate. Unity has to be our goal. I urge you to join today and be part of our efforts this Spring. And stay tuned. Our first "Make America, America Again" rally hosted by Governor Cuomo will be in Congressional District 1 in late April. We will announce a time and place soon. Together, we will win. And congestion pricing is one of the ideas being thrown around. I was in Albany the other day w people who work at other schools in my district, trying to talk to electeds about this stuff, and the people around me disapproved of congestion pricing more than they cared about the budget (because they're all from South Brooklyn where everyone drives everywhere and they mistrust public transit because a) Manhattan is far away from here, and b) dirty, poor, and non-white people take the MTA so obv it's not good enough for this group). Our only local Democratic elected official was caught off guard trying to defend a policy that isn't even HIS to a bunch of ppl who are supposed to be asking questions about schools and education funding. lol/sob

re-convicted! NYT:
Dean G. Skelos, once one of the most powerful political figures in New York State, was found guilty of bribery, extortion and conspiracy on Tuesday, marking the fourth time in five months that a major federal case targeting corruption in Albany has ended in a conviction.
The jury in Federal District Court in Manhattan deliberated for three days before finding Mr. Skelos and his son, Adam, guilty; prosecutors said the elder Mr. Skelos, the former leader of the State Senate’s Republican majority, had wielded his political clout to pressure business executives to send his son around $300,000 for a patchwork of no-show or low-show jobs.
Both Mr. Skelos and his son were convicted on those charges in 2015, but their convictions were overturned last year after the Supreme Court limited the definition of public corruption.

Pareene: the Prince vs the press
Spectrum News is one of the largest strictly local news outlets in the state, and its coverage of Albany in particular is vital and important. It is the primary place where millions of New Yorkers learn what is happening in the notoriously corrupt and opaque statehouse (it's worth noting that Spectrum's NY1 has scheduled a Democratic gubernatorial primary debate this month, which Cuomo has not committed to attending despite his apparent promise in May to debate progressive challenger Cynthia Nixon). Andrew Cuomo is threatening to blow it up, either because he doesn't care about the collateral damage of his war against Charter, or because blowing it up is the point of that war. In Spectrum's newsrooms, many journalists believe it's the latter.

― |Restore| |Restart| |Quit| (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 6 November 2018 14:20 (five years ago) link
I think people's take on the term limit question depends on the character of the neighborhood that they care about. A historically Black neighborhood that's now targeted by developers and speculators is ill served by pushing elders off the board when they know the history and work to protect their community's heritage--but a historically white neighborhood that's now refreshed by immigration but refuses to transition the power structures to represent a now-Chinese or now Arabic-majority community is unrepresentative and inequitable.
I'm getting the sense that Queens is scenario #2 and so is South Brooklyn, but Central Brooklyn (Bed-Stuy, Brownsville, ENY, Crown Heights) is the former. In short, IDK but I'm prob going yes-yes-yes.
― There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Tuesday, 6 November 2018 14:34 (five years ago) link
that's an interesting analysis - i definitely think of CBs mostly in terms of old white assholes in manhattan and brooklyn, fighting against bike lanes and bus improvements and having a mixed record at best on fighting gentrification. there may be other scenarios. but i wonder how critical "elders" really are - there are surely young members of endangered communities who'd be interested in serving, and are we really imagining that they'd all be quickly captured by smooth talk from developers (and that no elders have been similarly captured)?
― |Restore| |Restart| |Quit| (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 6 November 2018 14:45 (five years ago) link
Yeah I also question that which is why I'm willing to vote Yes on 3 even though my loyalties are with Bed Stuy.
I don't think there's a single white person on CB3, whose meetings I went to for years, and iirc there was no shortage of women leaders either. So the district I'm most familiar with doesn't fit the assumptions. But I've noted for years that while they can hound some cocky white aspiring cocktail bar entrepreneur and make them regret botching their liquor license request, they can't stop gentrification, and new bars still keep opening and filling up with people that are disrespectful to the neighborhood. So I don't know that the "we need elders" argument is that effective.
are we really imagining that they'd all be quickly captured by smooth talk from developers (and that no elders have been similarly captured)?
No I think the "bad" scenario here is pro development puppets and bougie white ppl who can afford to pay 2.5 mil for a brownstone just taking over the community boards and erasing the work of 70 years of community-building.

In Year 1 of the all Democratic control of Albany: Cuomo rejected 43 more bills last night. Since Jan, he's vetoed 160 bills from a busy legislative session. https://www.syracuse.com/coronavirus/2020/03/coronavirus-stimulus-how-to-get-unemployment-aid-for-freelancer-contractor-part-time-workers-typically-left-out.html?outputType=amp
pull quote:
"Begin by visiting your state’s labor department or equivalent website. For New Yorkers, head to labor.ny.gov. If you are not traditionally eligible for unemployment benefits, begin the standard unemployment insurance application process, and apply for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance."
pull quote from NY LABOR site:
"Filing a new Unemployment Insurance claim? The day you should file is based on the first letter of your last name. Last names starting with A - F, file on Monday. Last names starting with G - N, file on Tuesday. Last names starting with O - Z, file on Wednesday. If you missed your filing day, file on Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Filing later in the week will not delay your payments or affect the date of your claim; all claims are effective on the Monday of the week in which they are filed"
soooo.... if today is your day, get on it.

The final part of the application process requires a phone call to an actual person, and I've seen lots of reports of people using autodialers, trying for a week, and never getting through. So this is going to be fun.

I know Cuomo is still a goblin, but I can't lie, I love it when it attacks McConnell and Republicans over holding back COVID funding to New York, bringing up that we pay out way more federal money than comes in, year and year out And he reminded that we always fund hurricanes and floods and disasters (rightfully) but now that we need the money, as the hardest hit state, now there's all this bullshit.
