unicorn poop evaluator (WmC), Wednesday, 10 June 2009 12:37 (fifteen years ago) link

did we have a season five anticipation thread?

cutty, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 19:37 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah and then it was changed to a regular season 5 thread cause no one was bothered to start a new one.

yeah so we don't need an anticipation thread. this is the lost season 6 thread.

also, TAWARET.

My, Tawaret, what a big snake you have.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 June 2009 14:28 (fifteen years ago) link

If no one starts an official S6 thread when the time comes, I will. I just got caught up with the series midway through last season and it was kind of a hassle figuring out where the actual S5 talk began. (Though when I found it it was pretty funny/obvious--a big series of WHOOOAAHHHs outta nowhere)

what u arrestin me for, innit (╓abies), Thursday, 11 June 2009 14:54 (fifteen years ago) link

hmmm, look what was added at the bottom of the wiki article:

A giant, four-toed statue, misidentified by the official recap of the series as Taweret, stands on the beach of the mysterious island on the American TV series Lost, a fact alluded to beforehand by the solution to a Lost-themed Wired Magazine cryptographic puzzle by Bruce Schneier.[3]. Despite this identification the statue clearly depicts Sobek.

Sobek and Tawaret are very closely related, fwiw.

still not feeling this thread title.

So... last Comic-Con panel ;_; first two links only very, very, slightly spoiler-y - you know those guys aren't big on huge reveals - but i thought i should mention it anyway. Mostly seemed like it was a lot of fun.

Recap with all the promo videos plus some footage from the panel:

Slightly more readable recap:

Some viral/ARG thingy? http://www.lostuniversity.org/
Don't have much hopes for it though considering how the last one worked out (i.e. it didn't).

Roz, Monday, 27 July 2009 17:43 (fourteen years ago) link

is there no exciting new footage of next season or equivalent buzz clip?

unban dictionary (blueski), Monday, 27 July 2009 17:47 (fourteen years ago) link

nope but there are three clips (the Hurley and Oceanic commercial clips and the Kate clip) that are supposedly hinting on where the show's gonna go. They basically serve the same function as the Faraday/Marvin Candle clip last year.

also seems confirmed that at least Elizabeth Mitchell and Faraday will reappear in season 6. Possibly Dom Monaghan too. And that Batmanuel has been promoted to series regular rather than guest-star.

Roz, Monday, 27 July 2009 17:57 (fourteen years ago) link

okay wait, i just watched a bit of the panel and they actually seem to be kidding a bit about Jeremy Davies being back so maybe not? i dunno, i don't really trust anything they say anymore.

it totally sucks since they were hinting since the end of season 3 that he was gonna come back in a major way, but since his one-off last season it seems like he's just getting dropped altogether w/no real explanation. then again they might FINALLY address the whole child abduction thing this year...

then again considering how lame Michael's comeback turned out, maybe it's for the best

maybe the characters will find themselves flipping between the island and LA in "real time" ie they have all become Desmond. doesn't sound workable at all really but if they can bring back s1 characters at all then...

so says i tranny ben franklin (HI DERE), Monday, 21 September 2009 21:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Parallel timelines in place of flashbacks would be pretty great actually. They could systematically kill every character off in one. I'd like to see violent bloody Jack death.

Matt DC, Monday, 21 September 2009 21:52 (fourteen years ago) link

one thing I would like to be very, very careful of is turning "Lost" into Sliders"

so says i tranny ben franklin (HI DERE), Monday, 21 September 2009 21:53 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm guessing the parallel timelines will probably CONVERGE at some point

cutty, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 12:32 (fourteen years ago) link

hoping they stick with no parallels like they said they would personally. having one 815 crash and one 815 not crash in the same world is not quite the same thing. plus they've teased before about characters potentially meeting their past selves (Locke esp. had the opportunity to do this) and maybe they should follow up on that as daft as it may be. omg could lead to countless versions of the key characters running around.

unban dictionary (blueski), Tuesday, 22 September 2009 12:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Actually the only way they could possibly get anywhere near including that many characters is to get rid of flashbacks, flashforwards, parallel timelines everything and keep it more or less in one timeline. I'm guessing a big chunk of the series could involve Richard Alpert trying to get them to do whatever it is they're supposed to do.

history mayne, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 13:03 (fourteen years ago) link

do we know she's dead? we do know elizabeth mitchell is coming back to the show though so... i don't know.

Roz, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 13:05 (fourteen years ago) link

we do know elizabeth mitchell is coming back to the show

not as a regular. and at one point she wasn't coming back at all. so if she is it's likely to be in flashback i'd have thunk.

history mayne, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 13:05 (fourteen years ago) link

the bomb not having gone off would be the biggest horseshit ever

unban dictionary (blueski), Tuesday, 22 September 2009 13:07 (fourteen years ago) link

right but the question is... if the bomb went off and jack (? or whoever, i have forgotten) was RIGHT, then the reset happens. so juliet lives. if the bomb goes off and he's WRONG, then she dies. but then surely so does everyone else.

i guess they could do the reset and not have too much juliet because she is boring, idk.

history mayne, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 13:09 (fourteen years ago) link

The alternative is what Miles said, and that exploding atomic bomb plus freak electromagnetic event causes whatever Incident they were trying to prevent. So the plane crashes just as it's always supposed to, and they find themselves in the 70s dealing with the fallout from the Incident. Which probably won't happen.

But if the bomb goes off there probably isn't much Island for them to go back to even if they have to. Unless it just cancels out the electromagnetism and nothing else, in which case this is rubbish science. Actually it's rubbish science whichever way you look at it.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 14:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Didn't Sayid or someone say something about it being only a small part of the bomb? Or some crap? I remember thinking, "I see what you're trying to pull here".

A-Bomb detonates -> Dharma Initiative dudes plus young Ben plus Widmore and Elly badly fucked up or killed -> Desmond and Juliet never turn up on the Island in the first place -> Flight 815 never crashes -> Faraday never sent to the Island -> A-Bomb never detonated.

It would be bollocks of the highest order, in other words. The only way they've made time travel work by now is on the premise that you can't actually change anything.

Autogoon Almanac (some dude), Tuesday, 22 September 2009 16:17 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe the electromagnetic activity at the site causes everybody to travel through time a second before everything blows up. Also somebody moves the island at the just the right moment so it's saved too.

peter in montreal, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 16:19 (fourteen years ago) link

their plan actually working makes the most sense (bomb goes off, was not the original Incident referred to by Chang but takes the place of it effectively), so 815 doesn't crash...but Jacob does find some other way to bring them all to the island anyway (this is tough because we don't want to see a second 'return to island' right?). why was he seemingly only ever interested a few of them tho - presumably he didn't visit Michael, Eko etc.

unban dictionary (blueski), Tuesday, 22 September 2009 16:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Frankly I never bought the idea that Lost would split into different timelines, since the show seems so overwhelmingly in favor of predestination. So I was surprised at the finale, and having seen the Comic-Con teasers it does look like they're going for some of kind of reality reboot. Still though, this is the final season, they really don't any more time for wiggling, I'm just trusting they've had this final chapter basically ready for a while.

I think they're actually taking the Olympics on and running straight through them. Plus, it's really a necessity if they've got 18 episodes, but assuming the first is a two hour and the finale is a two hour, then 16 airdates, meaning that they've basically got to start on February 2nd or they won't finish during May sweeps.

I think it might be helpful to rewatch without the mindset that certain characters are going to be much bigger and more important than they turn out to be. I think anytime they made a big deal about such and such actor joining the cast, I always thought that they were going to be a regular and/or return from the dead somehow after they were killed off three episodes into their stint.

OR MAYBE THEY WILL BE RETURNING FROM THE DEAD AFTER ALL........

McElhenney said that 50 weeks of each year are consumed by acting, producing, and writing for the show, but he did find time to appear in the third season of the television show Lost as Aldo in the seventh episode, "Not in Portland". He is shown reading Stephen Hawking's A Brief History Of Time 22 minutes, 40 seconds into the episode. This was as a result of McElhenney meeting Lost co-creator and executive producer Damon Lindelof. Lindelof is a fan of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and offered to give Rob a small role in an episode. Though Aldo is thought to be deceased, Damon Lindelof revealed that Aldo isn't dead (Lindelof also joked that "No one dies on that fucking show") and may actually appear in a new Lost episode.

I'd forgotten how intense it seemed at the time, compared to anything else that had happened, that Claire had to raise her baby etc etc. Nothing really came of it throughout all 5 seasons, so I hope it leads to something in the final season other than 'lol psychic'.

(I mean, I know Aaron was raised by Kate or whatever but Aaron himself has never seemed that important. Maybe the whole psychic thing was just meant to motivate Claire even more to keep him away from THE Others in particular, rather than 'others'.)

The baby's dad looks quite a lot like a young Ben imo :)

the real commercial is pretty gross imo, i can understand if they wanted to go for that kind of shock value if they were actually talking about polar bears dying from the ice caps melting, but instead they just use it as a super weird device to address something else entirely

Just finished re-watching Season 1 (yeah it took ages). Not too much that seems any different second time round, except a couple of things. Rousseau says she hasn't seen anyone else on the island, but has heard them - obviously crap, I guess they get around that by having her be kerrazy. I forgot also she tried to trade Aaron for Alex (by taking him to the pillar of black smoke, even though there were no Others there).
Tom Friendly on the raft seemed really really creepy, as up until then there's no real sense of a team of people making a concerted effort to 'get' them - it was only Ethan and Danielle who'd appeared til then, who seemed to be acting alone.

Anyway, the most interesting bit that might make more sense now is what Locke says before blowing up the hatch (and just after nearly getting sucked down a vent by smokey) - they're talking about the Island bringing them there:

LOCKE: Boone was a sacrifice that the Island demanded. What happened to him at that plane was a part of a chain of events that led us here -- that led us down a path -- that led you and me to this day, to right now.

JACK: And where does that path end, John?

LOCKE: The path ends at the Hatch. The Hatch, Jack -- all of it -- all of it happened so that we could open the Hatch.

JACK: No, no, we're opening the Hatch so that we can survive.

LOCKE: Survival is all relative, Jack.

JACK: I don't believe in destiny.

LOCKE: Yes, you do. You just don't know it yet.

OTOH, it also just sounds like yer average Locke bullshit, so who knows...

yeah i've noticed a lot of that in my scattered re-watching lately (just got through S3), things that are ambiguous enough that they're not flat out RONG in retrospect but were clearly pushing in one direction that it seems the writers were as convinced of as the audience was at the time. I think Rousseau even says something in S3 about not wanting to see Alex because she wouldn't recognize her, which makes the trading Aaron thing even goofier.

still really bothers me that when jack is in his druggie crazy phase and he goes to steal meds from the hospital he says 'you go find my father and tell me he's not drunker than i am' or whatever... would jack be that out of it to say something like that? i don't think so. it's weird.

”Just finished re-watching Season 1 (yeah it took ages). Not too much that seems any different second time round, except a couple of things. Rousseau says she hasn't seen anyone else on the island, but has heard them - obviously crap”

She was specifically talking about the Others, right? I watched the Jin and Rousseau ep earlier today, and it's not necessarily a plothole. If Faraday was right about the variables and constants, then Jin would have been able to alter the course of events. That would explain why Rousseau didn't recognise him in S1.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 24 December 2009 21:48 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i'll just handwave that one away, since it's 20 years into her psycho past, and as crazy as she is Danielle probably doesn't think time travel/immortals exist

Nhex, Thursday, 24 December 2009 22:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah I'm not too worried about Danielle not recognising Jin - it's not that strange. It's just that they asked her if she'd ever seen anyone else on the island and she says no - but iirc they come right up to her and nicked the baby Alex.

I'm happy to explain this as she's crazy/lying/trying to protect them, it makes more sense than some of the stuff that happens in season 2 (e.g. Eko dreaming stuff he couldn't have known about then acting on it).

Locke is a good character to re-watch. He goes from seemingly wise all-knowing, to calling his life pathetic and trying desperately to piss people off (also beginning to get easily manipulated by Ben), but it's quite a good line and he could fall either side of it.

Interview with Cuse/Lindelof.

THR: Do you have any plans to pitch a new show, on ABC or elsewhere, for next season?

Lindelof: No. We don't. The world works in mysterious ways, but our full-time job for the last six years has been coming in here and working 70- to 80-hour weeks on "Lost." The idea of going back into the fray Brett Favre-style is not alluring to us. When we finish "Lost" we will disappear to our undisclosed locations then think about things for a while.

Cuse: I think the one thing that's pretty certain is neither of us have a great (urge) to do something that's this dense, sprawling and serialized. You need to exercise different creative muscles.

Lindelof: My hope is to rip off other successful shows.

THR: Like you've been ripped off?

Lindelof: Exactly. Maybe a show about vampires that work in an ad agency and one is a serial killer.

Cuse: Especially if the lead character is also cooking meth.

Lindelof: Oh, I hadn't thought of that. Almost guaranteed an Emmy. "Breaking Bad Men."

It's nice if for no reason than just to give Hurley's story some kind of resolution. There was an EW interview recently I think where they were totally laying the blame at her Watros' feet for not coming back, it seemed kind of weird, but I guess it worked out.

Also good to hear that Michael would be back for sure - Perrineau was publically grumbling about how they took the character out (understandably!) so I wasn't sure if they would bother, but similarly Walt didn't get a scene with him.

They can't put any new footage in the trailer without blowing the cliffhanger. The bomb thing doesn't mean anything necessarily - Faraday couldn't save Charlotte by telling her not back to the island so I don't see why he should necessarily save everyone else by telling Jack to explode an atomic bomb.

no doubt after a rewatch and once s6 starts the magic will work again.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 19:49 (fourteen years ago) link

The "we have to go back" stuff still seems unconvincing a second time around. Jack had always been single-minded about wanting to leave and didn't believe all the "island = your destiny" stuff - just because Locke said right at the end that he was going to move the island and then did, doesn't make everything else he said come true or make any sense.

One way of looking at it could be that Jack really didn't have much to live for with his dad and wife gone and so the vague notion of 'saving' everyone back on the island became overwhelmingly important to him. But they didn't really go with this angle.

Much as I love Lost what frustrates me the most is that none of the good storylines can exist without some sort of extra-bullshit explaining them.
Eko and Locke have some success on the island finding old Dharma stations etc - because Eko gets some information in a dream that he otherwise wouldn't have. Same with Locke and Jacob's cabin.

Miles and his ghost talking crap which it seems like you just have to accept is genuine Derek Akorah-style woo. Admittedly they haven't used this too much to advance the plot but it made the freighter guys believe that the Lost gang didn't kill Naomi, and it's used a few other times.

The time travel constant stuff - I'm willing to go with time travel as a viable mechanism (and was initially impressed that they seemed to be explicitly setting out the "what happened, happened" rules) but when they try to complicate this with the stupid idea of a constant and all of Faraday's other crap it just becomes completely random.

OTOH, I have possibly been watching a bit too much Lost...

Not the real Village People, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 19:50 (fourteen years ago) link

To be fair though, didn't Jack want to go back also because he was going fucking mental? EG hallucinating, seeing his Dad? I don't think it was a rational thought process, he got back to the real world and totally lost his shit.

"Faraday couldn't save Charlotte by telling her not back to the island so I don't see why he should necessarily save everyone else by telling Jack to explode an atomic bomb."
That's his Plan B -- the bomb goes up, they never crash, Charlotte never comes back to the island, or even if she does, sudden time vortex death syndrome doesn't apply.

i kinda would've liked a scene where Ben categorically insisted that they must pretend to be primitive tribe dudes to the survivors, handing Tom the fake beard and theatrical glue and TOm looking at Ben aghst saying "this isn't what i signed up for!" and Ben just giving the "stfu do as i say" look.

ben and jack are sitting on the plane that will take them back to the island and jack asks what is going to happen to all the other people on the plane and ben turns to him and says "who cares?"

I like that at least a couple of the people on the plane were planted anyway. Pretty soon we're going to find out that half of the people on Oceanic flights over the pacific are somehow Dharma, Jacob, or Locke-related anyway.

As unconvincing as this was, it wasn't as bad as the whole "we have to lie about where we were" business they went through when they got off the island. Like I understand that for the sake of the future story that they wanted to tell, it was necessary for the characters to lie. Just like it was necessary for the sake of the future story for the characters to go back to the island, but I really wish they were good enough writers to make this stuff convincing. The whole bit about protecting the rest of them from Whidmore didn't really even make superficial sense. There's lots of other shit like this in the show I remember if I could tolerate going back to rewatch it all. But the thing about Lost is that the first 3 and a half seasons are un-rewatchable, because most of the flachbacks just aren't very compelling a second time through and they're a big chunk of early episodes, especially for characters like Boone and Shannon.

Also thought it was funny in season five when Sawyer and Jack are arguing about what to do about Sayid cuz Sawyer was just sitting around reading and Sawyer goes into this speech about thinking and how when Jack was the leader he never thought, he just reacted. So Jack was like "I got us off the Island!" Yeah Jack, you got yourself and four other people off the island and then did nothing for the other survivors for three years. Great job.

Mister Jim, Friday, 15 January 2010 00:06 (fourteen years ago) link

I think people need to rewatch if they think jack deciding they had to go back didn't make sense. To my memory they played out jack's slow conversion to that view over loads of flash forwards. As I already said he starts seeing his dad everywhere, and basically loses his shit through the guilt of having left the rest behind, to die for all he knows. How is it not well explained?

I'd have to watch it again to see how the pact to lie about the island comes about, but I don't remember that seeming unnecessary either.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 15 January 2010 08:42 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean hadn't they just left an island where widmore had sent a death squad to murder them all? Kinda might just make sense they didn't want to go back to the real world all Hi!

I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 15 January 2010 08:50 (fourteen years ago) link

It doesn't matter if the lying to protect people from Widmore didn't make sense (it didn't - Widmore knew they were bullshitting). Surely the whole point is that Jack doesn't think before he acts? That's what that scene with Sawyer in the barracks was all about.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Friday, 15 January 2010 09:47 (fourteen years ago) link

How does Widmore knowing they were bullshitting mean them telling that lie made no sense? Surely that just means the lie didn't quite work, not that the motivation for telling it made no sense?

I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 15 January 2010 10:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah actually now I think about it I suppose in Jack's mind there was no reason for Widmore to know who any of the Oceanic 6 were. But then again I don't think they were trying to bullshit Widmore, I think they were avoiding having to tell the entire world about an island that people have gone to a lot of trouble to keep secret.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Friday, 15 January 2010 10:19 (fourteen years ago) link

It was a bit of all those things I think. I think Locke told Jack not to tell anyone. Also like...their actually true story would have been fucking insane.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 15 January 2010 10:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Haha, I like that reasoning, because in Lost-world logic, it does make sense - trying to tell them they were on an island for all those months which no longer exists would make them all look like psychotic, murderous cannibals or something. Also remember - Widmore already did the whole immense cover-up with the fake plane, the dug up bodies and so on. So they'd look REALLY crazy! So they were going to have to make up some kind of lie.

Nhex, Friday, 15 January 2010 12:19 (fourteen years ago) link

the plane coverup is what confuses me: the fake crash was made to look like everyone died - all the bodies were 'discovered', right? so how did they explain the oceanic six being alive? (i admit i may have forgotten/missed something here)

DAN P3RRY MAD AT GRANDMA (just1n3), Friday, 15 January 2010 16:14 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah they just seemed to go based on identifying the plane and the pilot and stuff. the lie the o6 told was based on where the fake plane was found etc

I sort of assume Widmore did his best to make it appear as tho everyone was dead. But also in reality when they found the plane etc it was buried extremely well and they couldn't really check every body.

Re Jack going back - I have rewatched it. Obviously it shows Jack losing his shit. But why would that make him want to go back? He managed to bring Kate and the baby back. He'd always wanted to do that. Kate is happy back home.

Jack's had some father issues and his dad's just died. He's bound to go a bit crazy and surely being a 'man of science' this would be his first explanation (to himself/anyone else?) as to why he's losing it.

There's no reason for Jack to think that the people left on the island are in danger. Unless he suddenly believes all the stuff Locke's been spouting about them leaving = direct cause of danger to other survivors. As I said, the island moving could have convinced him that Locke is knower of all things after all, but seeing how much airtime they give to Jack just "losing it" he never says anything about this afaik.

I agree that he might reasonably start worrying about the danger the others are in due to Smokey etc (regardless of Locke's arguments) but why would he even assume they were alive three years later? It took a few weeks for most of the survivors to get picked off.

OTOH "the lie" makes a lot of sense - they'd have to answer some awkward questions otherwise and they know a very powerful man is desperate to keep the island under wraps and will kill to do so. So yeah, I'd lie.

Not the real Village People, Friday, 15 January 2010 20:19 (fourteen years ago) link

no reason? wouldn't he think widmore would still be trying to protect the island by any means necessary, including killing the survivors?

tehresa, Friday, 15 January 2010 20:24 (fourteen years ago) link

He might, but what I'm saying is he never mentions this, never wonders whether three years later they would have all been killed or whatever. There's never a clear reason given for him wanting to go back (and - importantly - putting Kate etc in danger once again) other than "oh I'm losing it wah"

Not the real Village People, Friday, 15 January 2010 20:30 (fourteen years ago) link

just because we didn't have a specific scene of jack going 'hmm i wonder if they're dead' doesn't mean he hasn't wondered about it. and ben did imply that jin was still alive... i think his reason is mostly escapism and feeling like he will never really be able to be a part of normal society again.

tehresa, Friday, 15 January 2010 20:32 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean, it's like, he leaves --> life falls apart. it's pretty clear he thinks his life fell apart because he was not supposed to leave, so if he goes back, he'll be happy/functional again.

tehresa, Friday, 15 January 2010 20:33 (fourteen years ago) link

I kind of thought that was the point; namely, Jack only wanted to return to the island because he was losing his shit and that was the last place where he found happiness.

xp: yeah, that

Jay Leno's Pony Vivisection Hour (HI DERE), Friday, 15 January 2010 20:33 (fourteen years ago) link

That's kind of what I mean. He didn't ever believe Locke's "you're supposed to /not supposed to" arguments. So is he now a convert to destiny etc? Why? Because his life fell apart? All I mean is it's just surprising in this show, where they give people quite clear motivations, for Jack to become a 'man of faith' without it being a major plot point.

Escapism seems the most likely aspect I guess, but I'm just never quite convinced of his motivations. Maybe he wants to see Ghost Christian again.

The Locke meeting is what causes his depression (that and suspicions about Kate on the phone). Makes more sense now, having Locke & Jack showdown off-island. I think I had the different bits of the story in the wrong order in my head.

Not the real Village People, Friday, 15 January 2010 20:46 (fourteen years ago) link

All I mean is it's just surprising in this show, where they give people quite clear motivations, for Jack to become a 'man of faith' without it being a major plot point.

Yeah I agree with this - Lost used to spend so long on back-story that any characters motivation for doing anything would become painfully obvious. So it's surprising here that there is even any debate as to what his intentions for going back were. In the episode I watched last night Juliet confronts Jack in the shower about why he came back, not believing it was to save those they left behind but for his own selfish reasons, and Jack reveals he thinks coming back to the island is his destiny (or something along those lines). This is a seismic shift in Jack's personality and imo hasn't been explained yet. That said the show could probably do without another episode filling any of that wack off-island phase of the story at this point.

As for the other characters:

kate - wants to find claire and bring her back to the mainland
hurley - no idea ? am i forgetting something ?
sayid - wasn't intentional
sun - wants to find jin [why did sun not go back to the 70s?]

My main other gripes with the 'the lie' is as follows: what made them think that if they lied and did nothing that everyone else left on the island would be safe? For the entirely of their stay on the island they were constantly in danger...even before the Widmore character was brought into the show...so why would they be safe now?

david cam'ron (tpp), Friday, 15 January 2010 21:47 (fourteen years ago) link

other things that have pissed me off rewatching:

- why does everyone talk about 'their people' so much. at what point do other human beings you are trapped with on an island become 'your people'. would like to know please thanks

- ben says that 'his people' don't even have a name for 'the monster'. i mean wtf? how do they talk about it then? would seem a bit difficult tbh

david cam'ron (tpp), Friday, 15 January 2010 21:51 (fourteen years ago) link

I dunno, I really felt and believed the sense that everything just went fucking wrong for Jack once he left the island. I don't think, having made a difficult decision to leave this weirdo fucking island where so much crazy shit happened, that it's that weird for him to want to go back, to think "maybe I wasn't actually supposed to leave", not least when he's hallucinating and shit and seeing his Dad. The sense for me was that there was no real equilibrium to his life when he left.

LG, that's how it appeared in the order the episodes were aired, but seems he was ok for a while, stuff started going wrong only after 2 years or so off-island (so that's why it didn't sit well with me that he would instantly decide leaving the island was the cause of everything going wrong). I guess it all built up into general craziness then Locke's visit was the final nail in the coffin (Locke taking advantage of Jack's state of mind to manipulate him into going back?) - need to re-watch that ep.

It wasn't Charlie, it was Jacob. Also there were dudes trying to kill Hurley all over the place and he'd already had his "this is fucked up" moment at the start of the season.

I think part of the problem was that the Locke episode in the last season was so badly written, ESPECIALLY the face-offs with Jack and Kate. They could have done so much more with those scenes than just "nyerr, you just want to go back to the island because you've never had a girlfriend".

Jack's sudden change of mind to come back to the island (which only happened within a matter of like 48 hrs by the way) isn't as weird as Kate's reversal, which was even shorter, but whatever. They leave a lot of shit to be inferred here, but it's all somehow plausible. Also to answer someone upthread, it was Jacob himself who convinced Hurley to go back.

I still don't find the original Oceanic six lie about the island convincing, though. It's kind of garbage in my opinion. I just know that the story needed them to lie, so they did without ever having a convincing rationale.

I dunno, I guess I just love and hate this show at the same time. As much as I love this show, so much of it is so dumb in my opinion, and always has been.

Just re-watched the one in S5 where they actually go back and that probably contains THE most irritating bits - Kate making some huge deal about Jack NEVER ASKING about Aaron again (she only gave him to Claire's mum, right?) and Mrs Hawking telling Jack not to worry about how ridiculous it all sounds but saying he needs to give Dead Locke something of Christian's... that is probably the most video-game shit of the whole series.

I think I gave up on ever trying to decide Juliet's motivations after the first 10 seconds she was in it. Jack can trust her... OR CAN HE.. no actually he' can't... OR CAN HE...

Yeah, the working theory (haha) for now is that Smokey works for Titus Welliver aka Black Shirt aka Esau or whatever. This is mostly due to Smokey not killing Ben and telling him to do whatever Fake Locke wants right? Makes sense.

The cabin thing I think is explained but I'm a little confused on that. It's possible that everything with the cabin is Smokey/Black shirt-guy related, and he was trapped in the cabin until recently, the dead serving him, etc. all the way through season 3 when it was introduced.

Nhex, Saturday, 16 January 2010 14:41 (fourteen years ago) link

What was that other thing? The one that took trees down and nearly sukced Locke underground... kinda thought it ws an early Smokey

The reverse TARDIS of pasta (Niles Caulder), Saturday, 16 January 2010 14:47 (fourteen years ago) link

that was smokey obv.

my theory would also be that whoever was inhabiting the cabin was smokey/black shirt guy all along, and he set up locke even at the stage of ben bringing them both to the cabin. ben didn't have a clue about who jacob was or wasn't anyway, as per the end of s5.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Saturday, 16 January 2010 15:56 (fourteen years ago) link

I think part of the problem was that the Locke episode in the last season was so badly written, ESPECIALLY the face-offs with Jack and Kate. They could have done so much more with those scenes than just "nyerr, you just want to go back to the island because you've never had a girlfriend".

Terry O'Quinn agrees with you, he said to a guy from Sky One that he thought Locke's attempts to talk everybody into coming back were 'pretty weak' ... and implied that Locke's being ineffectual made his attempted suicide scene work.

Given the fact that there have been a few scenes in which they're establishing that you never see Locke and smokey at the same time (latest example being Ben's confrontation with Alex), I think they're signalling pretty strongly that smokey, various dead folk, Locke, and Esau are all the same guy. Which is weird because sometimes the dead can touch you (Alex) and sometimes can't (Christian, Esau). And smokey seems to have no problem grabbing hold of people.

my theory would also be that whoever was inhabiting the cabin was smokey/black shirt guy all along, and he set up locke even at the stage of ben bringing them both to the cabin. ben didn't have a clue about who jacob was or wasn't anyway, as per the end of s5.

Yeah, agreed. Ilana pretty much confirmed this when she showed up at the cabin.

Brakhage, Saturday, 16 January 2010 18:20 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm having a hard time making all the details add up, but the impression I have is that Esau created the idea of Locke as 'special' or 'future leader of the Others', gave that idea to Locke, Locke wanders through time telling everyone that he's the leader of the Others, voila, he's the leader, and thus in a position to get close to Jacob. That's a hell of a long con, and I'm not even getting into the idea of Esau as pretending to be Jacob for years and years. It's dizzying!

Brakhage, Saturday, 16 January 2010 18:31 (fourteen years ago) link

locke is the first to actually encounter smokey, isn't he? and afterwards he seems almost euphoric - is that when the esau dude somehow connects with him?

Brakhage, Saturday, 16 January 2010 18:50 (fourteen years ago) link

I think your Esau long con theory works because of the time-travelling. Esau-Smokey-Locke only comes into existence post-2007 crash, after Real-Locke is dead in a box.

2007 Esau-Smokey-Locke simply tricks Alpert into getting Real-Locke, who's skipping through time, to go to the past and tell everyone he's the Others' leader... and voila, in the future, Locke is their leader.

i guess this is why the question of whether the bomb resets everything is pretty key - presumably all of Esau's plans hinge on Oceanic 815 crashing in the first place.

Roz, Saturday, 16 January 2010 18:56 (fourteen years ago) link

Exactly - you've got it. I think a lot of the setup for Locke as leader of the others comes in the last few eps of season 5. Richard seems really deferential to Locke in past episodes, but towards the end of season 5 he says that he didn't find anything special about Locke at all (the Dalai Lama selection scene in which Richard visits a child Locke). He's promoted to think of Locke as leader because Locke's told him he's the leader a few times in Richard's past. Richard follows through with this, and is also pretty amazed at stuff like the compass, etc.

The way I see it is that Locke and Esau had no connection at all until he reached the island. Once there Esau determines that this is the guy to usurp Ben's place as leader, nobody really sees why Locke is so great, but enough weird shit is happening around him that people like Richard say 'well, the island must have chosen you, okay'.

Brakhage, Saturday, 16 January 2010 19:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Jack, Kate and Charlie encounter Smokey in the very first episode, except we don't see him.

That long con theory definitely works apart from the question of why Jacob would bring Locke back to life when he falls from the building. But I don't suppose we know what Jacob wants with them all in the first place.

I'm not sure that Locke is necessarily completely dead, or entirely the man in black, he might be a new unaging Richard Alpert type. Locke didn't appear to recognise the statue foot when they arrived there in the last episode, which is a pretty big giveaway.

My own theory is that the Island is a prison and both Jacob and the other dude (I refuse to call him Esau) are trapped there but kind of cancel each other out. They can't kill each other for some reason. My guess is that the remaining survivors aren't there to save the Island at all, their destiny is to destroy it.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Saturday, 16 January 2010 19:10 (fourteen years ago) link

ooh i like the destroying the island theory.

Also what would have happened if Ben had pushed the wheel completely and not left it hanging? the people left behind would've just gotten stuck at the first timeline they travelled to.

Roz, Saturday, 16 January 2010 19:11 (fourteen years ago) link

More likely the island would have moved in space and there'd have been no time jumping at all.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Saturday, 16 January 2010 19:14 (fourteen years ago) link

i guess this is why the question of whether the bomb resets everything is pretty key - presumably all of Esau's plans hinge on Oceanic 815 crashing in the first place.

Jacob seems to be the guy who's interested in having people arrive on the island, so I don't see Esau working behind the scenes to make the crash happen. I think Jacob's 'they're coming' either refers to Ilana's crew or the 815ers (or both), both groups selected by Jacob off-island.

Jacob and the other dude (I refuse to call him Esau) are trapped there but kind of cancel each other out. They can't kill each other for some reason..

Same as Ben and Widmore. I assumed it was a timeloop thing - 'you can't kill me because I don't die' or something.

The Alpert/Ilana shit in the next season is going to be massively important, isn't it?

Yeah, not seeing how Jacob/OtherDude/Others communicate with each other for five seasons is kind of maddening. What the hell are their expectations of each other? What the hell do the Others think all day long?

Brakhage, Saturday, 16 January 2010 19:18 (fourteen years ago) link

The Others spend their time learning latin, honing their ninja skills and experimenting on pregnant women. Obvs.

Roz, Saturday, 16 January 2010 19:22 (fourteen years ago) link

If they drop the ball of explaining what the hell they were doing with kids and Walt I will be seriously bugged.

Brakhage, Saturday, 16 January 2010 19:24 (fourteen years ago) link

I thought they just wanted kids to raise as more Others as they couldn't have any of their own. Although they did say that most of the Others were 'recruited' rather than born on the island, but I have a feeling this is something they won't go into much further.

What's the significance of Ilana again? Still working through the end of S5...

I think Locke is one of the more interesting characters, on re-watch. I think first time round I was too influenced by him being a great boar-hunter, confident on the island etc that I thought there *was* an argument for him being genuinely "special".

However now it appears he's pretty easily manipulated and doesn't really understand the island at all - he believes he does, wants to and has been told he's special (because as mentioned above he later goes back and makes Alpert etc believe he is). There's a great scene that seems to illustrate this - Season 4 finale when Ben is chucking the stuff into the time machine thing down in the Orchid - he asks something like "so is this the magic box?" and Ben just looks at him like he's beyond stupid "...no!!"

The whole thing with him "realising" that entering the numbers in the hatch was an experiment... he sees a whole set of TVs in that hatch with one or two switched on and monitoring the Swan hatch, then sees a video saying that the hatch he's in can be used to monitor psychological experiments. Cue him trying to prevent the numbers being entered.
Later they go back to the monitoring hatch and someone else switches on the other TVs which are pointing all over the island. (IE *these* were where the experiments are, rather than the Swan? Never quite clear on that...) Locke: "well, now I feel stupid".

If he's really just a bumbling fool, I'm still not sure what the deal was with him hearing Jacob in the cabin first time round, though.

Not the real Village People, Saturday, 16 January 2010 20:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Jacob goes to see Ilana in hospital, she's covered in bandages, he says he needs her help for something. Next thing we know she's on her way to the island with Sayid in tow.

Maybe whatever was in the cabin wanted to be seen by Locke, and didn't want to be seen by Ben?

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Saturday, 16 January 2010 20:18 (fourteen years ago) link

My thought was that Locke's not hearing Jacob at all, but MIB/Esau. It's important for Locke to be seen as having the hotline to the gods rather than Ben, so Ben gets cut out of the exchange.

Locke's a really tragic figure on rewatch because you used to think of him as becoming special by means of his own agency - now you see he's just a pawn. Kate makes the point that he's obsessed with finding meaning in his life rather than just living it and finding meaning that way. Both Ben and Locke are so messed up by their fathers being complete bastards that they have no ability to accept or forgive themselves for being what they are, so they think the only way for them to be worthy is to serve a higher power.

Season 4 finale when Ben is chucking the stuff into the time machine thing down in the Orchid - he asks something like "so is this the magic box?" and Ben just looks at him like he's beyond stupid "...no!!"

That just kills me every time. I think that's the funniest Ben reaction shot ever. 'I'm a Pisces' might be close second.

Ben seriously cracks me up.

I don't think it will happen as the writers have set up his redemption arc very well but I really hope it doesn't boil down to Locke being a pawn his whole life cause that's a horrible cop-out for a great character.

Roz, Saturday, 16 January 2010 20:31 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't know if it's a cop-out but a warning for what happens when you attempt to outsource your reason to live - Jacob's 'what about you?' sounds a lot like '... and couldn't you have been finding some other source of happiness rather than demanding it of me?' to me. At this point I don't know how you redeem Locke, him being dead and all. Unless his life and memories affect MIB in some way.

Brakhage, Saturday, 16 January 2010 20:40 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm thinking (or hoping) that both Locke and Jack - both having reached punishment for their stances on faith vs. reason, both find some kind of salvation in the final year, since supposedly that is one of the main themes for this eason. I don't think the showrunners are really going to just throw Locke down the well as far as being a total chump since Day 1, but even if they do it would fit the show as we've seen - but I don't think this show is inherently that pessimistic (though they love cruel irony and melodrama).

I still think it's more likely that Locke is possessed, or there's part of him in there as well as the dude in black. I don't think the writers would wipe him out completely and then leave his spirit form wandering around for ages.

The other flaw in the Long Con argument was that it depended on Ben, Jack, Ellie and the woman in the butcher's shop bringing Locke's body back in the correct way. We don't yet know what prompted Ben to take that course of action though.

Yeah, this kind of depends on who Ben/the Others were actually taking orders from - Ben says that he has to get Locke back there, and Widmore is very keen on getting Locke back there as well, which makes me wonder if MIB was ordering people around from the cabin as Jacob. But it is a pretty big hole.

w/r/t to Locke's body - dead characters wandering around the island have to have their bodies on island (i'm not sure whether they actually have to have died there): Remi, Christian, Alex. So if Locke's body is off-island, no dead Locke to possess.

I love the long con deception layers - there's no holy "island" consciousness that Ben, Widmore and Locke all believe in, but actually Jacob and Esau - the same way the "others" are Ben and Widmore duking it out (the original S1 others vs. S4 invaders).

They really could've just let Desmond and Penny ride off into the sunset after season four, but of course, the island isn't done with him... Not really sure why they did that, honestly - dude's been through enough!

My Annie guess remains that she was pregnant with Ben's kid and died in childbirth, leading to his obsession with the pregnancy research - at least we'll find out for sure this season (I think) why Ben initiated it all in S1 with the kidnappings. Pretty sure the producers said they'd finally get back to that now - makes sense with the seasonal mirroring (4/3, 5/2, 6/1), Claire coming back, I think Walt does too, at least briefly. But yeah - I do think they've been holding it back for THIS long because it'll be the final Ben flashback story - there have been too many mentions/hints about her for Annie to be dropped entirely.

There might've been an incident, but basically we know that Widmore was kicked off because of Ben - he used Widmore getting married off-island and having kids as an excuse - whatever actually happened during the 80s I think might just be too much junk to delve into at this point. But who knows, I'm still dying for a full Libby episode.

Ooh, here's a theory (from http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2010/01/13/DI2010011304368.html) - Lost Hour Q&A with fans & Lostpedia admins.

Regina, SK: Where do you think the character of Aaron will lead to in Season 6? Will he still be important, perhaps as much as he was thought to be in seasons 1 and 2? -Alex, Regina Saskatchewan

Jen Chaney: I think Aaron will be significant, for sure. Actually, I thought he was fairly significant in season five. Kate's decision to leave him with his grandmother was one of the more emotionally wrenching (and memorable) moments of S5, I thought.

Kevin Croy: I think he will be significant too. I suspect that we'll find out we've known Aaron the whole time as someone else.

Sam McPherson: That would be interesting. Could he be Jacob? Both are blondies.

Liz Kelly: Okay, now my head hurts.

wasn't Widmore sug-banned from the island just because Ben found out he'd fathered Penny off it?

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 21 January 2010 21:34 (fourteen years ago) link

I think Claire and Christian are significant but somehow i just don't feel like there's anything really important going on w/ Aaron. was there any indication that he was important early on beyond just that the others wanted him, which it turned out was because they couldn't have babies?

some dude, Thursday, 21 January 2010 21:35 (fourteen years ago) link

-how/why widmore was banished from the island

They are totally going to address this, surely?

They already did!

Some time after the Purge, Ben had Widmore exiled from the Island and supplanted him as leader of the Others. As Widmore was led to the submarine by armed guards, Ben came to say farewell. Widmore, however, felt Ben had come to "gloat" about his victory in having him exiled. Widmore had been exiled for "breaking the rules": namely, for regularly leaving the Island, and for having a family off the Island (specifically, a "daughter with an outsider"). Widmore scornfully told Ben that one day he would have to choose between Alex and the Island. He was then led to the submarine and exiled. ("Dead Is Dead")

what of the fuck you talkie bout (Pancakes Hackman), Thursday, 21 January 2010 21:36 (fourteen years ago) link

that would be especially lame considering that another character now has a baby NAMED CHARLIE

some dude, Thursday, 21 January 2010 21:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Don't forget that the Others rejected Walt for whatever purpose they wanted him for (though tbh this development could've just been written into the show due to the actor's growth spurt), and that was as far back as season 2. They can easily write this off - Walt was just another kid of many that they did kidnap in the aftermath of the crash. Odd that pretty much all the kids were in the tail section, though. I'm sure there will be some kind of explanation - maybe unsatisfying - for why all the kids in 2004 were important.

Also, Claire is probably dead, right? Well... OK I'd say that if I didn't think she was coming back as a regular.

(and please no that baby is his own grandpa shenanigans, i beg)

Nhex, Thursday, 21 January 2010 21:47 (fourteen years ago) link

Of the chopper people who were selected and sent to the Island by Widmore/Abbadon we know that both Miles and Charlotte were born on the Island, Daniel was at least conceived on the Island and possibly born there as well, so I'd assume that means Lapidus was also an island baby? Actually I really want to know what Frank's deal is all round seeing as the Island clearly wants him for something.

1. Gather ingredients

3. Breathe heavily through your nose as though you were about to hit ingredients
4. Give up and make the sandwich yourself, and eat it bitterly

ahhh ha ha hah, so true, they're leaving out

4a. come to realise that your way of making sandwiches may have been completely wrong but it's okay as long as you still get to be in charge of making the fucking sandwich that nobody else wants to eat except kate who couldn't even spread the jam without spilling it everywhere, as if almost on purpose

I think this will be a swerve though, like someone's dream or something, and they ultimately won't go with the reset. I think they will tease it though.

I can see how someone might see that as a stupid waste of time as well. But I kinda see it as a Last Temptation of Christ sort of thing. Like a vision that shows Jack why things would have been even worse if the plane didn't crash. That the world needs them to crash on that island.

some dude, Monday, 1 February 2010 14:37 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah we could - might need a title change though? "LOST Season Six: What the hell is Richard Alpert's Deal Anyway?"

Roz, Monday, 1 February 2010 14:39 (fourteen years ago) link

eh maybe there should just be a new 'SPOILER FREE' thread and then this one can keep being used as the spoiler-ish one.

some dude, Monday, 1 February 2010 14:41 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah lost threads have been traditionally pretty nicely spoiler-free imo and roz is right, there was no real revelation here. also the spoiler-avoiders should just not use the internet for 3 months before the season premiere.

mdskltr (blueski), Monday, 1 February 2010 14:51 (fourteen years ago) link

i think there should be a new thread regardless since this is already 600+ posts long and it's going to be a bitch opening it up if you want to re-read comments on previous episodes (which i do cause i'm a nerd). can't think of a decent title though.

just watched the finale again, i intended to watch the whole 5 seasons but then i realised i have a life.

few interesting bits, fake locke really lays it on thick with richard etc, acting like he doesn't know where jacob lives and stuff. some interesting stuff with bram and the shadow of the statue dudes at the start, they are talking about whether to trust lapidus and ilana says something like "he's a candidate". i assume a candidate for their stupid gang.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Monday, 1 February 2010 21:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Since Lapidus came back on the Ajira flight, she may be thinking he's been selected by Jacob (a la the Touchees), but have no way to confirm it by herself.

is it plausible that the reality that the shadow of the statue people are in is already the alternate-bomb-blew-up reality?

(Are we considering alt-reality talk here to be a spoiler? I wasn't sure.) That's a great idea, I was thinking beforehand that the alt-reality is actually the reality created by the successful intervention of the El Touchy/ShadowStatue crew against MIB. The 'present' narrative hasn't caught up to its creation yet.

I thought that scene was just another wink at the camera kinda thing, "LOL we really have nothing left to do with these characters but don't wanna kill them off, so we'll let them roll their damn eyes at the drama queens running around advancing the plot to poke fun at our own show a bit"

Yeah, personally I loved that scene! The show kinda needs some characters (usually Hurley) to pipe up once in a while to talk about how ridiculous it all is, to make the really dramatic stuff more easy to go with.

if ab aeterno is the highest rated episode of the season we're in trouble

lots of it SEEMS like we're getting new information, but it's really just old stuff made a little clearer.

it's still not clear that smokey is more evil than jacob; jacob made all those people on the boat die, fr'instance. it's not clear why he needs to test people either.

the explanation for why the black rock is in the middle of the island is particularly poor. there was a big wave and they hit the statue and whoa! middle of the island. i'm guessing that's their explanation for why the statue is broken too. two with one stone.

More Four-Play: Just what you wanted (no?) a new four letter word that will be revealed in two weeks which is very important. If you want to play along, here goes: This word has no A's, one E, and as of episode 11 it will be clear that this four-letter word is what this series is ultimately all about. It's also the word that just might end up connecting the two worlds (the island and the Flash-Sideways Los Angeles) we've been seeing all season long.

Scoop on next week's episode:

- There's a reveal about Jin and Sun that will shock you. They are *o* *a*****!
- We'll see Daniel Dae Kim shirtless. (You're welcome, Josh Holloway, who lobbied for that. And you're welcome, world.)
- Fake Locke reveals what they need to leave the island.
- We learn that a female Lostie is "expendable."
- There will be a "package."

*o* *a*****: not candidates? also, there's a promo that shows sun lying on the ground.

it's still not clear that smokey is more evil than jacob; jacob made all those people on the boat die

can we give this one up? i don't recall jacob turning into a pillar of smoke and ripping people into pieces, over and over, numerous times since the beginning of s1. bringing a boat to an island (somehow) and some of the people on it dying in a storm hardly compares. plus you know it's tv...ambiguous blah blah blah but smokey is pretty markedly evil.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Tuesday, 30 March 2010 18:40 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, but the reversal of expectations that would entail making Jacob the bad guy and MIB the good guy is almost predictable for lost.

That said, I don't really think this is going to be good vs evil per se, but I expect Jacob will be the more sympathetic figure in the end.

they said in the podcast that there was a storm right afterwards

WTF IT WAS RIGHT THERE IN S5 AND THEY SAW THE ISLAND FOR THE FIRST TIME DURING TEH STORM IN S6 FUCK YOU WRITERS

that is maybe the first thing to make me really pissed off at the writers being lazy.

"OH, WELL, THE STORM JUST CAME ON REALLY SUDDENLY AND THEY HADN'T ACTUALLY SEEN THE ISLAND YET WHEN WE SHOWED THE SHIP ANCHORED RIGHT OFF OF THE STATUE ON A CLEAR SUNNY DAY"

that said, then OK guess it was the Black Rock.

sleeve, Friday, 2 April 2010 04:00 (fourteen years ago) link

I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 2 April 2010 09:28 (fourteen years ago) link

it's also night tho surely. and when jacob and mib first talked about the ship it was morning. this is fairly easily explained too tho.

mib seemingly can't bring people to the island himself but to create the storm hampers his own chances of 'recruiting' them you'd think.

mdskltr (blueski), Friday, 2 April 2010 11:28 (fourteen years ago) link

could just be a storm, not night, imo. isn't he trying to kill them with the storm? because he doesn't want them on the island at all, as per the conversation with jacob?

Fox 1, Monahan 0

Attorney: Suit dismissed over alleged fight with Matthew Fox in Cleveland's Flats

CLEVELAND - The lawsuit against actor Matthew Fox over an alleged fight in The Flats last year has been dropped.

On Aug. 27, the former star of “Lost” tried to catch a ride on a private party bus driven by 29-year-old Heather Bormann, according to a police report. When Bormann wouldn’t let him on the bus, Fox punched her in the stomach and breast, the police report said.

When the city prosecutor decided not to charge Fox, Bormann filed a civil suit, seeking $75,000 in damages. Fox turned around a slapped the bus driver with a countersuit, saying she attacked him.

Now, Bormann’s attorney said the lawsuit was dismissed about a month ago. J. Norman Stark said he told his client that it would take time and money to fight the countersuit, and then he couldn’t get a hold of her. After the court gave Bormann 30 days to answer the suit, she appeared in court.

Bormann told the defense she could not afford to fight Fox’s suit and agreed to dismiss her case if he would dismiss his, Stark said. He also said that the actor did not pay Bormann any money.

Just days after the alleged incident, which police said involved alcohol, Bormann spoke with NewsChannel5.

"He was hitting me in the breast... I have bruises that I can't show that would be considered inappropriate, but I am bruised up underneath in areas I can't show," she said on Aug. 29. Bormann said she punched Fox back in self-defense, cutting his lip and injuring her hand.

Fox had been at Christie's Cabaret -- a strip club -- on Main Avenue prior to the incident, sources inside the club told NewsChannel5. He spoke with police for a short time, but was not arrested. Fox was turned over to a friend at the scene and taken by taxi to his hotel.

Fox was in Cleveland last summer to shoot the Tyler Perry movie “I, Alex Cross.”

one year passes...

http://okbjgm.weebly.com/lost/the-lost-will-and-testament-of-javier-grillo-marxuach

Lost writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach pens 16,000-word essay on the show's beginnings - great inside-baseball stuff about what ideas came up when, bad ideas that were tossed, competing pressure to meet demands from the execs and the show creators (basically, execs: more drama, less weird genre stuff, JJ Abrams: more mysteries), etc.

And why they didn't kill off Jack in the pilot as originally planned:

On our second day at work, JJ and Damon brought in numbered hard copies of the pilot for the think tank to read and on which to give feedback. My most salient note on the pilot was that murdering the one white male character with a discernible skillset that could serve to generate stories — at the very least Jack was a doctor — would not go over well with the network.
In truth, my response was a lot less politically correct, informed as it was by my decade-plus experience as a Puerto Rican working in Hollywood.

What I really said was "You can't kill the white guy...."

So when JJ and Damon returned from their first network notes session with a slightly bemused expression, I asked how the notes session went. I was not shocked when Damon shrugged with a not inconsiderable amount of contempt for his unimaginative corporate overlords and reported that, "We can't kill the white guy."

how many years until a LOST reboot miniseries?

akm, Thursday, 26 March 2015 20:57 (nine years ago) link

At some point, I want an inside basketball account on what exactly went wrong in season six. I've heard rumours that they had plans for the temple that they decided wasn't working, and the fact that the sideways universe turned out to be unconnected to both Desmond's electromagnetic adventures and the 'Incident' at the end of season five, to me suggests a massive course correct at exactly the time they couldn't afford it.

I don't know. Lost was always spotty, I'm not sure season six 'ruined' anything. But the more I think about it, the weirder it seems.

Frederik B, Thursday, 26 March 2015 21:09 (nine years ago) link

it was fairly horrendous - like basically any other ending besides the actual ending would prob have been better. nothing actually happened, it was like "ok now we are done and have no more story the end"

Junior Dictionary (LocalGarda), Thursday, 26 March 2015 21:30 (nine years ago) link

I'm one of the few people who kinda liked the revelations of the nature of the island, and how little was revealed. But spending so much time on sideways stories that turned out to have nothing to do with the main story was such a weird idea. Like, I kinda don't believe that was the original idea.

Frederik B, Thursday, 26 March 2015 21:57 (nine years ago) link

"we sure as shellac knew what the polar bear was doing on the island."

So you knew there was a crank on the island, and that whoever turned it ended up in the Arctic, so the Corp. brought polar bears onto the island so that they could turn the crank without a human ending up in the tundra? Because that ended up being the answer given by the show.

(Later in the essay he says the original plan was the Walt summoned the polar bear using his psychic powers. I just had to vent.)

poxy fülvous (abanana), Friday, 27 March 2015 03:45 (nine years ago) link

That... fits? The polar bears were being used for experimentation by Dharma. Close enough.
That said I love the Walt "animal psychic summoning" explanation much more, too bad they didn't go with that.

I only read a little ways in but if it includes psychic Walt I might have to return to it

The alternate timeline even now really pisses me off as a narrative trick, like why even bother wasting half of the entire final season on that when you already know it's going to go nowhere? It just took up a lot of screen time they could have spent actually bringing each narrative thread to an even vaguely satisfying conclusion.

Matt DC, Friday, 27 March 2015 14:29 (nine years ago) link

Given the other pieces of shitty Lindelhof hackwork I've seen since I can only assume the dude is just incapable of writing endings.

Matt DC, Friday, 27 March 2015 14:35 (nine years ago) link

lots of interesting ideas, not really so much on story arcs that end

I can imagine a roundtable of writers trying to figure out how character arcs will end, Lindelof wanders in, says "what if the island... is unstuck in time?!?" and then they all have to plot around this week's nifty idea instead of resolving anything

mh, Friday, 27 March 2015 14:48 (nine years ago) link

The Leftovers has given me a heck of a lot respect for Lindelof. Yeah, it was an adaptation, but the specific ways they fit it to the medium were some of the best parts. So I blame Carlton at the moment.

Frederik B, Friday, 27 March 2015 15:37 (nine years ago) link

lol there is more than enough blame to go around

They were only able to waste half of the season on the alternate timeline because they were busy wasting the other half introducing a cadre of new characters who had no real purpose. Because these are the narrative through-lines you want to pursue when you have a limited amount of time to wrap up five years of lingering mysteries.

Gimme Gimme Pop Secret (Old Lunch), Friday, 27 March 2015 15:55 (nine years ago) link

It sucked to feel so hoodwinked at the time, but in hindsight I think the failure of L O S T in the home stretch has really helped (some) subsequent genre shows by displaying how sour a turn your show can take when you're flying by the seat of your pants.

Gimme Gimme Pop Secret (Old Lunch), Friday, 27 March 2015 15:58 (nine years ago) link

their failure in the homestretch was baked into the show's ethos--every mystery had to be subservient to characters learning about themselves, so instead of learning about the temple you had to meet some guy whose kid died, and instead of finding out more about the island you had to see these brothers get mad at each other

Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Friday, 27 March 2015 16:09 (nine years ago) link

The thing that still most irritates me about the alternate timeline is that they wholly fabricated a son for Jack that had conflicts and emotions and stories and he NEVER EXISTED.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 27 March 2015 16:15 (nine years ago) link

I really don't see that huge a drop-off in quality in the last season, I think after season 2 it sort of went downhill.

"As I described before, there was definitely a sort of "operational theory" for what the island would be -- it was liked by some and loathed by others -- and since Damon and Carlton chose not to say it out loud in the series finale, I won't presume to do it for them. Suffice it to say there was a concrete reason that we openly discussed on several occasions about why the island had an exotic source of power in its core that was able to wreak such miracles as time travel, the motion of the island, and somehow connect with selected people on a psychic level."

I can't think of any theory that would work unless you were high.

poxy fülvous (abanana), Friday, 27 March 2015 18:19 (nine years ago) link

Ok finally finished this read, it was so long I had to spread it out over a period of nights. A really fascinating look at the writing and creating of this pretty unique show! Gives really great detail on how certain concepts were originated and maybe brought into canon. The drop in quality I perceived following the start of season two makes total sense as all the original writers had left the show. Also makes sense that new network brass did not appreciate the sci-fi qualities, which was my main selling point, and thus were heavily toned down during the middle run of the show.

Did they make everything up as they went along? Of course they did, they were writers, their job was to create something out of nothing (or at least very little).

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 2 April 2015 14:28 (nine years ago) link

Didn't they start dicking around with time travel during the middle run of the show?

Matt DC, Thursday, 2 April 2015 14:30 (nine years ago) link

As I packed up two years worth of stuff, a warm and welcome thought danced around my brain: an idea for Lost. As I had to write an email telling Damon that I would not be able to attend the screening he had planned for the season two finale (I only had one free week before starting on Medium and had planned a trip out of town), I added my idea to my regrets on the invitation and pledged that this would be the last thing I ever pitched him for Lost.

Hell, I was still on the payroll, so why not?

Damon responded warmly, and I went on my way... later, when the idea showed up in season three, I was ultimately gratified. Even on the last minute of the last day, I had been able to make a positive contribution to the future of something that had absolutely changed my life.

What was the idea?

Oh come on. Do you think I learned nothing from JJ? I may be saying now that this is the last time I will speak publicly about Lost, but I would be a fool if I left nothing in the mystery box!

Any ideas what this is?

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 2 April 2015 14:31 (nine years ago) link

It's weird, because the sci-fi stuff came back with a vengeance for seasons 4 and 5, so I wonder what changed their minds
Too bad the Smoke Monster wasn't nanobots though

Nhex, Thursday, 2 April 2015 14:31 (nine years ago) link

xp Oh yeah nevermind. What am I think "heavily toned down"?

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 2 April 2015 14:34 (nine years ago) link

Well re-reading S3 summary it looks like the time travel stuff was mainly Desmond and perhaps has less of a sci fi flavor than a psychic/pseudoscience leaning. The show was mostly people trying to escape The Others w Desmond having visions of the future interspersed.

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 2 April 2015 14:37 (nine years ago) link

When I think back on it, it does feel right to me to call the middle years sorta 'toned down'. Season three is castaways vs Others, season four is castaways vs freighter folks. Season 5 def took a trippy twist and season six was just plain weird.

Frederik B, Thursday, 2 April 2015 15:05 (nine years ago) link

it's gonna end with people walking around the island giving each other warm looks and sawyer giving everyone hugs, softly saying "frackles, frackles, frackles" while violins play for 30 minutes.

from new yorker article about group dynamics in simulated missions to mars:

The study also cited reports of “unreciprocated sexual interest” expressed by a person of authority, and resentment from a French-Canadian participant who, forced by the group to sit through the television series “Lost,” complained that the plot was incomprehensible.

sad.
I remember my heart slowly ripping out when giant pendulums and faraday's crazy math amounted to nothing. the show decided to go an emotional route and ditched any logic for "this is just the way the mystery works, deal with it". Actually, I don't want to recall the specifics because just thinking about this show makes me sad
