Andrei Rublev vs. L'avventura vs. The Searchers

iatee, Monday, 7 September 2009 07:25 (sixteen years ago)

ok worst and least fave Taxi Driver

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 7 September 2009 07:28 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think 5, 6 or 7 are top ten worthy at all.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 7 September 2009 07:31 (sixteen years ago)

8½ easily.

abanana, Monday, 7 September 2009 07:37 (sixteen years ago)

Of the 25 I've seen, The Searchers

Dorian (Dorianlynskey), Monday, 7 September 2009 07:52 (sixteen years ago)

Haven't see L'Atalante, The Passion of Joan of Arc, Grand Illusion, The General, Persona or Andrei Rublev. Of the ones I've seen (and they all seem pretty great) I'd have to say my least favorites are Some Like It Hot, Psycho, and It's A Wonderful Life.

Dan S, Monday, 7 September 2009 07:59 (sixteen years ago)

Blade Runner, so boring

It's a Wonderful Life, Casablanca, the Bicycle Thieves, Modern Times are all obv. very entertaining, but there are so many 'better' films, its untrue

Ward Fowler, Monday, 7 September 2009 08:00 (sixteen years ago)

apocalypse now edges out lawrence of arabia (neither is a bad film)

velko, Monday, 7 September 2009 08:22 (sixteen years ago)

Citizen Kane
2001: A Space Odyssey
Lawrence of Arabia
Jules et Jim

either one of those. feel like voting for Jules et Jim (love Truffaut but this one was very dissapointing) on the other hand it has some magical moments. i generally HATEHATEHATE epics like Lawrence of Arabia.

Ludo, Monday, 7 September 2009 08:24 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, cinematography of Lawrence is great but Lean in epic mode is a chore for me, like his more "human" scaled films

velko, Monday, 7 September 2009 08:28 (sixteen years ago)

2001 barf

cozwn (webinar), Monday, 7 September 2009 08:41 (sixteen years ago)

lawrence of arabia. just your standard "epic" film.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 7 September 2009 09:00 (sixteen years ago)

Taxi Driver, never really understood what's so great about it. 2001 is my least favourite of Kubrick's major works, but at least it has some groovy visuals.

arguing on the internet is so much easier these days

thomp, Monday, 7 September 2009 10:02 (sixteen years ago)

i can't decide between eight-and-a-half and apocalypse now. the latter is some horrible coked-up attempt at profundity; the former has maybe the greatest gap between rep and what it actually achieves, though i think i'd probably not mind it if i saw it again

thomp, Monday, 7 September 2009 10:04 (sixteen years ago)

Pretty sure the worst is one of the ones I haven't seen yet, like Seven Samurai or La Strada, but since I voted Hitchcock in the other poll, I'll vote for him here too to even the scales: North By Northwest. Dishonorable mentions go to Casablanca and Raging Bull, tho.

we like cars, we like cartoons (dyao), Monday, 7 September 2009 11:56 (sixteen years ago)

As I said on the other thread Apocalypse Now seems to me to the be the one least worthy of inclusion (I'm assuming that the version of Bladerunner listed is the de-voice-overed directors cut which is also a pretty weird choice, but at least has an ending that doesn't feel completely slap-dash.)

Alex in SF, Monday, 7 September 2009 13:09 (sixteen years ago)

The Searchers or 8 1/2.

My life is butthurt so badly (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 7 September 2009 13:13 (sixteen years ago)

Apocalypse Now, followed by Blade Runner. Others I would just describe as "way too high": the first Godfather, 8½, Lawrence, Taxi Driver, Some Like It Hot, Sunset Blvd, The Night of the Hunter, La Dolce Vita, Jules et Jim, The Searchers.

Either Raging Bull or Taxi Driver. Scorcese is one of the most consistently overrated directors ever. I don't hate his stuff, but I'm rarely very impressed by it and it never really stays with me.

of the ones i've seen, i'd say either 2001 (pretty but boring) or dr. strangelove (still funny in parts but other bits haven't aged well). huh, both kubrick, what do you know.

Lordy ... it's "watchable," but the xcript is labored and obvious, Dall and Granger both bother me, and Stewart is utterly miscast. Among dissed '40s Hitch I much prefer The Paradine Case and Under Capricorn.

BIG jock KNEW aka the steindriver (jim), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 02:14 (sixteen years ago)

I thing most everyone (here) would be in general agreement that it's Rules of the Game that's Renoir's undying, populist/critical/historical hat trick masterpiece and that it's Grand Illusion that's the creaky film school staple.

boring movies are the most boring (Eric H.), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 02:15 (sixteen years ago)

As my wife and I watched L' Atalante, after about 45 minutes I began to repeat the blurb on the case, "This could be one of the greatest films of all time!" and my wife had no trouble understanding that I was being sarcastic. It is mildly charming in a rather attenuated way.

Raging Bull is exceedingly repetitive and bloviated. I think it needed one more stooge for the humor to work.

Breathless is... I can't say really. I couldn't watch more than fifteen minutes of it before I hit the eject button.

Aimless, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 02:17 (sixteen years ago)

I didn't even think of Raging Bull. It makes its points an hour before it ends. I have no idea how I ended up with a dvd copy of it, because I never want to watch it again. It's not the least great movie I own, but it's easily one of the least fun.

k3vin k., Tuesday, 8 September 2009 02:29 (sixteen years ago)

yeah strangelove is amazing and hilarious

The entire sequence where poor proper British Captain Mandrake gets trapped with General Ripper, who seems to be behaving irrationally, then VERY irrationally, then obviously has a fucking tea party in his head, then goes in the bathroom and shoots himself... oh my God that's funny. Every second of it.

I didn't find Strangelove particularly funny, either -- always just chalked this up to being born too late to fully appreciate the geopolitical context. But I saw it once, over 10 years ago, so who knows, maybe I'd dig it if I saw it again.

jaymc, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 04:41 (sixteen years ago)

I like pretty much every movie on this list I've seen, even Some Like It Hot, which got my vote. A very cute movie, but I don't really see why it's so highly rated. Is it the token "great" comedy film?

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 06:37 (sixteen years ago)

Interesting to see the negativity for 8 1/2 - it's my second favorite movie on the entire extended list. I'm having trouble deciding on a relative worst film on this list as all the ones I've seen are excellent.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 06:42 (sixteen years ago)

It would be a "token" "great" comedy film for people who are unwilling to reach back to the primordial genius of the silent clowns, yes. xp

it's Grand Illusion that's the creaky film school staple

Overstatement Alert. I think it's bcz La Grande Illusion has been widely imitated.

I really don't understand how a film with the line "Your muddah sucks big fat elephant dicks!" cannot be considered fun.

I do understand how people who think Arrested Development was genius can miss the boat on Strangelove.

I've seen a couple of articles running down Fellini as boring and overrated recently, and I wonder if he's starting to suffer a critical eclipse. I still think he's great.

Off this list, Apocalypse Now seems the most objectionable. Another one of those anti-war movies that pro-war guys love.

Soukesian, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 12:24 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah but I don't think it's possible to make a war critical movie that pro-war guys won't love. I mean I don't see any way you can't read, for example, the first 1/2 of Full Metal Jacket as being totally and completely anti-Marines/anti-war/anti-violence and yet I don't think I've met a single military person who didn't love it. My bigger objection to Apocalypse Now is that it descends into complete silliness by the end (and it doesn't start out very serious either.)

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 12:29 (sixteen years ago)

I know exactly what you mean - some photog famously said you can't point a camera at war without glamorising it - but military guys aren't necessarily pro-war. FMJ actually shows the kind of chaos and brutality that I can see would cause combat shock - I imagine people with military experience respond to that realism. (Catch 22 is kind of similar in that respect.)

AN, on the other hand, is war as a ponderously mystical trip, and treats the vietnamese as Indiana Jones heavies.

Soukesian, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 12:36 (sixteen years ago)

Apocalypse Now is a series of shocks. It has no beginning and it has no ending, and you could play it in a loop if you were masochistic enough to put yourself through that wringer more than once in a row. But no way is it not effective at what it does. It's *brilliant* at what it does. Nevermind what that is.

or have I become completely absurd? (kenan), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 12:47 (sixteen years ago)

The "morbid simplicity" of Rope? How about the morbid joke of miscasting Jimmy Stewart?

My life is butthurt so badly (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 12:57 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, you and Morbs are probably right about that. He's not AWFUL, but... hm. Thinking now of who would have worked better.

or have I become completely absurd? (kenan), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 13:01 (sixteen years ago)

The role is a conceit that's impossible to play. If he'd cast John Wayne it would have been a hilarious kneeslapper.

My life is butthurt so badly (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 13:03 (sixteen years ago)

I can imagine it as a role for a classic horror actor, perhaps Peter Lorre or Vincent Price. They don't NEED realistic character writing.

But then it would be a different movie.

Soukesian, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 13:07 (sixteen years ago)

i voted for some like it hot. soooooo many better movies than that one. it's been enshrined as a "classic" for as long as i've been alive and i never got the fuss. but i don't think i'm a wilder comedy fan in general. (though i give him cred for writing ninotchka. ninotchka just one example of a movie way better than some like it hot.)

scott seward, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 13:11 (sixteen years ago)

The role is a conceit that's impossible to play.

Awfully hard to call anyone miscast, then.

"It's *brilliant* at what it does."

Up to the point it ceases to be brilliant and becomes alternately ponderous and laughable, sure.

What Vietnamese??! They aren't actually in the movie for but a few seconds!

Jules et Jim
Apocalypse now (prob the only movie listed here i really like but it's totally flawed)

I voted NXNW. It's by far my least favorite Hitchcock (that I've seen). It's hard to get past the ridiculousness of the drunk driving scene.

Jeff, Tuesday, 8 September 2009 23:39 (sixteen years ago)

Having seen them all, I'm pretty sure I never once had a "That was awful--what are people thinking?" reaction. So I won't cast a vote; the time-frame in which I've seen them stretches back 30-some years, and I'd have to see them all again tomorrow before voting with any confidence. But I will say that I'm not that big on 8-1/2 (or Fellini in general), The Rules of the Game (I've tried two or three times--sorry), or L'Avventura (ditto; I liked Eclipse much better); that Potemkin is another long-ago film-class viewing I barely remember; that I just don't connect with 2001 or Blade Runner that deeply (perhaps a genre blind spot); and that, while I enjoy Casablanca, I'd much rather see The Big Sleep holding down that spot. Overall, I think it's a pretty thoughtful list.

Also, he insists that Cary Grant not be funny.

A Patch on Blazing Saddles (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 02:43 (sixteen years ago)
