that's where DEAD MOON are from! i don't know if they ever play there tho, apparently they hardly ever play in the USA. but if they do, you should go see them.

Doesn't R. Meltzer live there too? Or is there more than one Portland in the US?

Andrew L, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah there is more than 1 , there's 1 in maine too. but the oregon one is where the mad meltz lives i believe.

Portland, Oregon is the bloody mecca of the hipster poetry-slamming, coffee-drinking, dronerock-playing, pot-smoking slacker kid. Moving to Portland is like the US equivalent of moving to Brighton. Everybody talks about doing it at some point in their life, some people are dumb enough to actually do it. This is the song that Bohemian Like You was written about (PDX's most famous sons and daughter = The Dandy Warhols, for a reason) and when you visit the place, you realise that that song is actually NOT satire, it's the most loving of fucking homage.

It's a fun town to visit, though, especially for midnight drunken scooter races.

Portland has Powell's, the Greatest Bookstore Ever Made. When I tell people this, they say "it's a bookstore--how good can it be?" and then they come back and say "oh my GOD, I spent six hours there."

If you go to Reed College, people will offer you marijuana the instant you set foot on campus.

Dan Perry, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

As a native son and lifelong resident of Portland, Oregon, I feel qualified to answer this question. Let me tell you, this place has everything. For example:

- hundreds of streets and all of them named!

- parks, with trees, paths and park benches!

- automobiles in fantastic profusion from every corner of the world!

- a river flowing smack dab through the middle of town with both color and texture!

- lots of people! At last count, nearly 450,000 of the crapulent bastards!

This list does not even begin to scratch the surface of this wonderful metropolis. We even have places where you may purchase hot, ready-made food for take-away, a sky that varies from day to day, and residential neighborhoods full of houses. Our exciting "downtown" area has awesome buildings multiple storeys high, including many with elevators. In P-Town the fun never ends!

Aimless, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

And for Powells, which I've only visited virtually, as should you all.

DARNIELLE & ANDERSON TO THREAD!

Will I actually be the first, besides Douglas, to say something serious and positive about PDX?

For its price of livin', Portland's probably one of the best American cities to live in. Despite it being a west coast city, the weather can get downright FUCKING MISERABLE at times.. like during the ice storms in winter, and days like, oh, today.. where it's (check's Yahoo weather page) 96F/35C with 60% humidity... (ok ok so maybe not miserable compared to the east coast)

Portland's a fair sized city but it does feel even smaller for some reason. It's a nice arty drinkin' town. Musically -- well, if you can ignore the Dandies or Jackie O Motherfucker or the Epoxies easily enough, you'll find a nice variety of stuff to see, befriend, etc. (Minmae and Celesteville as one of several examples)

Like the rest of the northwest, it's kinda hippie/kinda swarthy occasionally.

Gareth, if you're looking at the Northwest.. and for something cheaper than Seattle (not that Seattle is super expensive, but compared the rest of the immediate region, it's pretty pricey), you should also check out Vancouver...(Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada that is -- not to be confused with Vancouver, Washington, which is confusingly enough right next to Portland, OR... )

donut bitch, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

SWARTHY, sir. You make it sound so good. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've never really heard a bad word about Portland, home of the Wipers, Rancid Vat, Poison Idea, Smegma...never been there myself though. I'm thinking of driving up in a few weeks.

Kris, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think a "metropolis" is pushing it, man. It's a pretty small town. Been there twice - it gave me the creeps.

geeta, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, geeta, we native Portlanders are generous by nature. In addition to having free drinking fountains on many street corners downtown (donated by a timber millionaire who hoped his lumberjacks would drink less beer if they filled up on water), we also give away creeps by the double handfuls, not to mention free kittens!

The truth of the matter is, if we didn't give them away, the creeps would pile up in the streets in unsightly heaps, along with all myriads of god-strangled kittens. As it is, heavy machinery sweeps the streets every night, pushing the creeps under freeway overpasses, but they won't stay put like the dead kittens do.

Aimless, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

geeta, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Contrary to rumors started by geeta, Portland, Oregon is not the home of the Dark Side of the Force. We are more on the Dim Side.

Aimless, Monday, 22 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

If you've never been, you need to go up to PDX & visit powells- most of the books are used, so they're cheap, and they issue you a map when you enter- it's room after room of books! I'm short, but most of these shelves have got to be at least 6 or 7 feet high.. . It's awesome. They kindly put out little stools in a lot of the aisles, so you can sit down for a while & flip through stuff.
Portland is also one of the prettiest downtowns I've ever visited, especially twenty third ave, the park blocks and all the fountains (if it's a hot day & you're wearing tevas, you can hop right in some of them!). Seattle is soooo ugly in comparison. Even if their downtown is tiny, it just means it's easy to walk around most of the town- mosly I've just ridden the bus when I'm going over to Hawthorne. And they get bonus points for having an accessible waterfront- something that's becoming an issue up here recently. It's kind of a crunchy, hippieish city, but no more so than Fremont or Capitol Hill are here.
Mt Hood also isn't very far away, and it has almost year round skiing- most of the times I've been in Portland were after a morning of May skiing. The snow turns to slush by noon, so you ski 7 AM - 11:30 AM, then you can go back to town & have the afternoon to meander around getting even more sunburned.
Vancouver BC, of course, has both Seattle & Portland beat.

Unless you want to live in a house with 10 other people, rents in Portland are not cheap. Over the last 9 years a lot of people have moved here and most of them were not slackers. They had money and bought most of the cheap homes. Also, the high tecj boom of the 90's did a lot to inflate housing costs.

Portland likes to refer to itself as a world class city. I think that is becuase they want to charge 1st class prices. If you compare Portland to any major city in the U.S. it will fall short in diversity, and culture (although a lot of white kids like to drive around volvos with "honour diversity" bumper stickers).

Portland is a place to hide from the rest of the world. It is not an engaging city. It is however a good base to engage in a lot of different outdoor activities.

If you do not like gray wet weather most of the year you will not like Portland for long.

I have lived in Portland for 9 years and am considering moving back to Chicago or to some other big city.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 25 December 2002 04:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

Unless you want to live in a house with 10 other people, rents in Portland are not cheap.

They're cheap if you're used to NYC/SF/Seattle, expensive if you're used to West Virginia or don't have a job. Which, of course, is a big problem, as the unemployment rate is, they keep saying, the highest in the nation. I'm not sure if that takes into account the people who make a bunch of money on the East Coast, move to Portland for 6 months, and then move back when the money runs out.

Portland likes to refer to itself as a world class city.

It does help to keep in mind that there's the Portland that most people think of -- the unwashed close-in southeast Portland that, in fall of 2000, had a Nader sign on every lawn -- and there's also the other Portland, where the mayor and her cronies get really excited about making downtown friendly to huge corporations and tearing down old building to make depressing overpriced and artsy "lofts". So. Nobody refers to Portland as a "world class city" except, well, those creepy people who think that it's good to be a "world class city".

Anyway, search: Stumptown coffee, Q Is For Choir record shop, the fact that everyone has a band and no one can make any money off their band, lots of beautiful bridges, the weather, a tiny city where you can walk or bike everywhere, lots of vegetarian food, no sales tax, etc.

Destroy: Politicians resting on a reputation built by people in the 70s, small-town dating pool (everyone knows everyone), everyone is lily white, the weather, events at the waterfront park that ruin your Sunday afternoon, people who come to Portland and expect it to be New York City or northern northern California, huge budget deficits, the Mercury, etc.

I haven't been to the Towne Lounge yet, but it's supposed to be a cool place to play and see shows. The booker, Chantelle, used to work for Berbati's for years and has a good reputation around town and has brought the venue some credibility. Someone told me that the stage is a bit small, but I know that some 6 and 7 member bands played there, so it must be fine.

Starky's! It's where you go for Sunday brunch if you're a 60+ year old gay male. You go with one or two of your other 60+ gay male friends and you tell the same jokes about the same sexual escapades that you have been telling them for thirty years!

I don't feel like I'm worthy enough to go to Starky's yet.

Town Lounge is nice and small, which generally makes the room feel "full". Very tiny stage, although the one show I went to see featured a band with 8 people in it, at least one of whom was put off to the side somewhere.

I think I have heard OK things about the Dirty Duck but I mostly only know the gay bar scene here through anecdotes. (The only place I've been to on that OregonBear list is Hobo's, which is sort of a piano bar/restaurant.) Joq's is right near my place, and it seems modest and nontwinkish enough from the outside, though I've never been in. This website suggests that they have food, which I can't imagine is recommended.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 19:51 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm kinda worried about this "small stage" talk - there are 9 of us for chrissakes.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 20:03 (eighteen years ago) link

OK Casuistry, you busted me - I actually haven't been to Starky's! But my GF and 2 gay friends of mine (in their early 30's) have always spoken highly of it and describe it as a cool place to hang out. I guess some people like hearing the same old jokes about sexual escapades from 60 year olds! Anyway, hopefully someone more informed than myself can give Dr. Morbius a better idea of where to go...

darin (darin), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 21:56 (eighteen years ago) link

It's not a tall stage, so some of you can be offstage without it looking too weird. And let me know the details etc.

I've been thinking about trying to get Martin M. to go with me to brunch at Starky's someday. I have perhaps built it up too much in my head, though.

Search: It is very nice out today.

Anyway, I used to work at the Towne Lounge some as I'm friends with the owner and all the employees, etc. It is a nice, small place -- the sound can really fill the place up but I think most bands try to keep it a little quiet because of that. Als I was a DJ there regularly when the place first started and it's really blown up, which is nice to see. I live just down the street so I'll try to drop by your show on Friday, Shakey.

Very intriguing... there's some Thurs night gay party (for a put-on {?} scene called "piratecore"?) the Willamette Week wrote about called BOOTY... sounds pretty awesome:

I don't know what our writer friend, Matt, thought of all this (I have a sneaking hunch it was all very circa-1995 Brooklyn to him AWRIGHT!). But I did finally figure it was time to go. It was during the "talent" portion of the pageant, when one of the naked dudes, cupping his man meat gently in his hands, inserted paint tubes in his butt and began to use his naked ass as a paintbrush.

Apparently they had a falling-out with the hosting bar (Porky's) in North Portland, and starting on the 29th it'll be held at the Acme (in Hawthorne, right?). I expect to be there on the 6th whether I go to the Lilys show before or not.

Well, I'm no Portlander! I was out of the park by 9:30, then went to my friends' house in Hawthorne (they have a 3-yr-old, so there was plenty of Captain Bogg & Salty).

NYC is predictably 86, muggy and full of people who don't look where they're going.

SE Portland is still my favorite part of town. My GF and I manage an apartment complex by the Trader Joe's near 39th & Holgate. The owner has been raising the rent this year, but the one bedrooms are still going for under $550 and the two bedrooms for $700.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 21 September 2006 04:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Hunh, I have a friend who lives near that intersection (but then, there are a lot of apartment complexes there). It's not really my favorite part of town, right there, but the TJs is nice.

I'm in close-in NE, not far from Sandy and 20th. I actually really like this neighborhood a lot. It's a nice mix of industrial and residential and is a quick walk or bike from my favorite parts of town.

Uh, I'm in a two bedroom for under $700. I don't think you should have any problems with that budget.

Buncha great suggestions. May I add, Lagniappe (probably my favorite restaurant right now) and Autentica. Both are on Fremont. Hang a left on 16th just after Lloyd Center and it's a straight shot up 15th to Fremont and hang a right.

SE Division is starting to blow up (finally!). Petit Provence does breakfast and is also a bakery. There is also the aforementioned Nuestra Cocina and Lauro for dinner (entrees run $12-$23).

Maybe some others can pipe in to disagree or agree but it seems like PDX'ers are crazy about going out to breakfast on the weekends. Expect a wait if you head out too late.

Cup and Saucer is still hanging on.

Ethiopian places on Broadway are generally good (I tend to go to Blue Nile the most, because it's closest to me) and Costello's is my local coffee/sammich haunt.

I think Il Piatto is overpriced and bland (which is a shame since I live within spitting distance and I liked it ambience well enough) and Swagat has caused way too many GI issues in friends and smelled far too strongly of ammonia the last time I went.

Ken's Artisan Pizza is new and pretty great.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 28 October 2006 22:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Wildwood is quite good but pricey. and if you want tasty ethiopian, hit up queen of sheba on MLK. Zero ambiance but oh so good food...

I've just had enough bad service at Queen of Sheba that I'd recommend Blue Nile, Abol, the other Broadway place (Mudai?) or, for the adventurous and thrifty, Dalos over it. But the food at QoS is certainly good enough.

You have to understand, Portland isn't really a tourist city. Except for Powell's. The nice thing to do, when you come to Portland, is spend time tagging along with your Portland friends and imagining that you are living part of their charmed Portland lives. Eat at the delicious but affordable restaurants, hang out in the coffee houses, wander around the neighborhoods, etc.

Go to Movie Madness, one of the greatest video rental places in the country, which also serves as a sort of movie costume museum. It's right near the Horse Brass Englishy Pub. From there wander over to the Belmont district a few blocks over in the upper 30s, see what's playing at the Avalon (a 3rd-run theatre and nickel video arcade). Stop at Stumptown for some coffee, or just go to the tasting annex next door. Eventually head south about six blocks to Hawthorne, one of the first neighborhoods to be gentrified in the modern push, and wonder whether all the other neighborhoods going under gentrification will end up like this. Putter about Hawthorne if you like, checking out various stores that sell various goods. Or else keep heading south, poking about the great old Victorian houses, until you get to Clinton and 26th. See what's happening at the Clinton Street Theater, the country's oldest continually-run single-theater movie house (which plays a lot of local films, ironic hipster films [they're showing the Transformers movie again this week, in a double feature with the Gobots movie this time] or the films (especially crunchy lefty documentaries) that the main art house [Cinema 21] doesn't pick up. Pop into Q is for Choir or Green Noise for records if you like. Then head north two blocks back to Division and over a few to the early 30s and go to Pix Patisserie for some very rich chocolate desserts. Grab a free weekly and see what's playing that night. On your way out, head over a few blocks to the Oregon Theater, which shows adult movies and which I'm sure is a fine establishment. Masturbate furiously. The E Room is nearby -- one of those bars everyone talks about, and sure it's a lesbian bar, but you came all the way to Portland, you might as well give it a shot. If that doesn't work out for you, go up to Division and 42nd-ish and have a bite at the Kalga Cafe, which I haven't been to in years but it seemed pleasant enough at the time. Keep walking around, you're sure to find things to look at and enjoy.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 18 November 2006 18:38 (seventeen years ago) link

seconded.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 18 November 2006 18:43 (seventeen years ago) link

You have to understand, Portland isn't really a tourist city.

Chris OTM.

Traditionally, when a Portlander received visitors from far away, the way to show them a good time always was to drive them out of town to Mt. Hood, Multnomah Falls or the Oregon coast. This has been modified in the past decade to include a routine more resembling what Chris recommended (although the traditional leaving-town agenda still has many fans).

Aimless (Aimless), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Those of us who do not know how to drive always forget about that part.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 19 November 2006 00:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Multnomah Falls is really nice. I think of Portland as a prettier Seattle, and a very nice walking city. I realized yesterday, though, that I've only ever been in Portland in May, July, or August. I've been at least 20 some times over the last 9 years, but it's only been in those months. odd.

I'm probably going to be in Portland for a day, maybe two, the weekend after Thanksgiving. I don't know the town that well, having spent less than 24 hours there over two years ago, but I'll be with others who know it fairly well.

Holocene is basically the hellmouth. Being at the Holocene is like having the veil of maya removed and staring at the bleak abyss of nothingness that is the true reality.

Chicago clearly has better dive bars than Portland. Let's not be ridiculous here.

Oh man, Reed. PROBLEMATIC. Reedies are fine individually but get really upsetting in groups. Nice campus though, and they seem to be pretty smart people. But the Reedie culture is just not my scene. Nice campus, though.

Casuistry, Monday, 23 July 2007 05:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Also Mt Hood is ridiculously close. Like 40 miles away? I don't ski though, but I believe that is where people go.

East side is a must, although if you're going to go to OHSU, then there are a few little bits of west side worth considering. SE is not as bad as your friends say, especially further out. Foster in the 60s/70s is up and coming, they keep telling me, and I know a bunch of people out there now, so it might be true.

Casuistry, Monday, 23 July 2007 05:09 (sixteen years ago) link

I flew out here on a Thursday last September, left Friday morning for a week in California, drove back to Oregon on the second Saturday and got a ride to the airport at 5am Sunday morning. I may have been in the state of Oregon a total of 36 hours before I moved here, and half of that was sleeping or on I-5 or both. I moved here in January.

I'm semi-transient though and could move anywhere like, tomorrow. I know it takes a commitment when you're packing up a huge load of stuff.

I think Chicago is hotter and colder than Portland, and Portland gets about 6 inches more precipitation.

Portlanders, please comment on this Slate article: Why Portland is America's indie rock Mecca.

jaymc, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, maybe I should've revived this, but it's on ILM: PORTLAND becomes city for indie musicians!!

jaymc, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:48 (sixteen years ago) link

OK. I read it. It had almost nothing to say and said it at some length. He spends the entire article dropping names of musicians who live in Portland, most of whom moved here. He describes their cars, their clothes and their shopping habits. He notes that many of them don't play many gigs here. He keeps asking, rhetorically, what all this could mean?

Then, in the final paragraph he gets around to saying that, maybe, just possibly, they came here to live because it's a nice place to live in. Zounds! Not exactly the stuff of pure, crystalline insight, if you ask me.

Aimless, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 18:00 (sixteen years ago) link

"And, crucially, indie groups always have good experiences here, because the city produces very enthusiastic rock crowds."

I don't think this dude has ever been to an indie rock show in Portland.

jergïns, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:19 (sixteen years ago) link

staying downtown beats staying in NW. screw both of them, actually, and stay on the eastside.

i've only been here for 3 years, so i'm too recent to notice any change in quality, but Alberta St by where I live is rapidly gentrifying(corrugated tin exteriors EVERYWHERE).

such a portland affectation. i totally notice it whenever i come down. how the hell are those going to look in 10 years?

kingfish, Thursday, 8 November 2007 00:21 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm somewhat fine with preventative smoking taxes, but this was not that. This was a regressive tax, with an unfair burden placed on poor people, who are seriously exactly the people who should not be responsible for paying for this.

Nevertheless there is a certain pragmatism behind the measure which I can't entirely reject. It would not have been the end of the world if it had passed, and I was on the fence about it for a while.

Casuistry, Thursday, 8 November 2007 00:34 (sixteen years ago) link

I kind of hope that my wife's job will get us transferred there in a couple of years. But I'm pretty sure it will be too late for buying a house post-NY-times influx.

Pittsburgh as the new Portland, maybe? I've never been there but it's been kind of fascinating to me lately.

Portland, ME is the new Portland

gershy, Thursday, 8 November 2007 04:27 (sixteen years ago) link

A couple of years just might be a great time to buy although I'm thinking the best time might be next year. It's hard right now, because mortgage requirements are tightening up and sellers are still hanging on the notion that they can ask inflated prices. That balloon is starting to deflate: I was looking at housing comps in my area and all of the houses (South Tabor for the natives) sold for $5k -$10k less than the asking price. But don't get too hopeful: Factors such as the region's Urban Growth Boundary (especially in light of the passage of M49) and the fact that really Portland as a whole is still cheap in comparison to Seattle or San Francisco will only slow the price drops that other regions are seeing right now. Portland as a region in terms of real estate values is essentially a lagging indicator as to the health of real estate across the nation.

Having said that, there are still underpriced neighborhoods in town. It's just harder to find them.

righteousmaelstrom, Thursday, 8 November 2007 04:35 (sixteen years ago) link

gabbneb, Monday, 30 June 2008 03:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Artichoke Music was, for a long time, owned by Steve Einhorn and Kate Power, two people I might be able to claim as actual friends, although this would place me in roughly the same objective category as about 5,000 other poeple who know them, admire them and put some sort of claim on them by prior connection. They sold the shop not too very long ago.

BTW, Kate has one of the finest natural singing voices I have ever heard, a contralto, if my ear is working the way it should.

Aimless, Monday, 30 June 2008 04:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Phil, I think you'd like the Ace. It's right near the gay bars and Powell's, and a friend of mine did the curtain treatments. The Jupiter is hipster in a different direction -- the Ace is more gay/artsy, the Jupiter is more partied-out hipster. You could play either way, no doubt!

I am pretty happy that Artichoke Music is still around.

I am pretty stressy and sad to be leaving Portland after 8.5 years here, but other adventures await!

Casuistry, Monday, 30 June 2008 06:58 (fifteen years ago) link

chris otm about the disparity between ace/jupiter. Jupiter is probably "easier" (unless there's all-nite coke parties going on in the room across the way from yours) and the Ace is probably more "interesting".

Clay, Monday, 30 June 2008 07:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Hello Portland.

I am moving to you in a few months.

Where in you should I live?

We'll need 2 bedrooms with at least some space for a dog. Being able to walk to a grocery store that sells delicious foofy veg shit and also liquor is v. important to me. We are not rich, though I am used to Chicago rent and paying like 60% of my paltry income.

Yr pal,

Nick

(Seriously, I'm having huge problems figuring this out on my own, mostly because I keep getting confused about the scale of the place, coming from big sprawly cities.)

Rubyredd, Monday, 30 June 2008 10:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Nick, in Oregon liquor is only sold at state-licensed liquor stores, although you may buy beer or wine at grocery stores. Liquor stores close at 7pm. This will probably take some getting used to.

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 30 June 2008 16:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Nick --

Look at the area around SE 39th and Holgate. Trader Joe's and Limbo (produce store) are just a couple of blocks away and the nearest liquor store is at 52nd and Powell, which really is not that far. Also, 2 parks in the area. Good luck!

righteousmaelstrom, Monday, 30 June 2008 17:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Phil, I think you'd like the Ace. It's right near the gay bars and Powell's

Oh, but I'm scared of gay bars and I don't like books that much, but still I think you've convinced me to stay at the Ace. I don't think I can handle a partied-out-hipster motel. I'm getting OLD!!!! The Ace looks super nice - the website is really well done, while the Jupiter's has some god awful generic lounge music playing on theirs. I'll prolly be there not during the weekdays so prolly not so much partying. gotta go take photos and meet ad agency people ugh.

Also, you're leaving Portland?? Where to?

(unless there's all-nite coke parties going on in the room across the way from yours)
these things happen in portland?? i always had this stereotype of portland kids drinking free-trade coffee and microwbrews and discussing their bikes and tempeh.

phil-two, Monday, 30 June 2008 17:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Rubes, I know! And my friends and I definitely have a bit of a crush on the Bay Area, so don't be surprised if I'm around every once in a while.

I didn't know Oregon did the state-licensed thing. I did mean beer and wine, though, so it's fine. My scotch-drinking friend will probably have a bit of an issue, though.

My only problem with that area is that it's right next to Reed, which may depress my admission-declined ass. Pretty, though. I'll probably get over it.

Thanks!

en i see kay, Monday, 30 June 2008 17:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes we have coke. It's the same people, really, but the coked out ones tend to be less interesting, maybe. Depending on what you find interesting.

I'm off to Toronto for grad school.

It is not too hard to find liquor stores, though it would be nicer if it was Cali-style and hard alcohol was in supermarkets.

Also, for scale issues: 20 standard grid blocks = 1 mile, basically. And it is generally very walkable.

Casuistry, Monday, 30 June 2008 17:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 30 June 2008 18:00 (fifteen years ago) link

en i see kay -

I manage an apartment complex with my wife in Reed neighborhood you're talking about. Our 2 bedrooms are currently renting for around $800 a month. Unfortunately, we don't accept dogs. However, I think you should be able to find some houses for rent in the area fairly easily - I assume for around $1200.

It's a great neighborhood. Tons of stuff within walking distance. Woodstock (main road that leads to Reed) has plenty of wine shops, some bars, liquor store, restaurants, Safeway, Bi-Mart, etc.

en i see kay, Monday, 30 June 2008 20:00 (fifteen years ago) link

At the same time, I adore any environment where those assholes can thrive.

hey portland / seattle people

I am taking my favorite drive in the world again this weekend from SF up 101 to portland -- I'm looking for the beautiful scenic route to cross over from 101 to 5, any time after the first 100 miles after crossing the Oregon border, it can take forever in fact it's better if it does as long as it's nice instead of developed -- would love to hear any recommendations

Gosh that drive is such a joy, Milton. I did it a couple years back (all the way from Dallas!) but crossed over around Florence as I wanted to see some friends in Eugene. It was pleasant enough but probably not exactly what you want.

scenic route to cross over from 101 to 5

A few years back, I headed east at Bandon and ended up on the 5 at Roseburg. It's long, because you go northeast, then southeast, then northeast again, but I remember it as pretty, with temperate rainforest bits.

Jaq, Monday, 30 June 2008 21:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Milton,

I think you could take Hwy 34 in Newport over to I-5. There are a couple of other ones that are nicer. Somewhere around, I think, Hebo there is a road that will take you through the Willamette Valley into Salem. It is a lovely and fun (read: twisty) drive.

If you want to get the full meal deal on the coast, you can drive up to Astoria and take 30 into Portland. But, it will take forever, especially on a holiday weekend.

righteousmaelstrom, Monday, 30 June 2008 21:47 (fifteen years ago) link

florence drive isn't bad, starts off nice. last time I went, I made the mistake of crossing over on the 18 during rush hour, malls & gridlock all the way up

the Bandon looks great. curious about the 34 at Waldport. we'll see.

xpost bingo, thanks. I've done the full coast thrice before, this holiday weekend I think will have to be more about the back roads...

Not that this matters, but I was reminded by rereading the first few posts on this thread that I finally met Meltzer a few months ago. I always thought it was a little weird that I hadn't met him, and then I met him. The end.

As you know, I have no idea where the fashion boutique is. There's an underwear-only store (men's only, I think?) not too far from the Ace, but you'd have to google that bitch up.

Le Pigeon is where Colleen's used to be, on E Burnside. It is spendy, by Portland standards. Also it is generally meat-y (Frenchy name!) so I have only had brunch there and am not the best person to ask.

Dunno Clyde Commons.

oh, well i know what you mean there. i never go to gay bars at home, but hey, im on holiday!

phil-two, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 16:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Well apparently they've all moved! Vaseline alley is significantly less lubricated. Anyway no one ever said that any club was particularly great, they just went to the bars they went to and made fun of them the next morning.

There's some law in Oregon that bars are required to offer at least five things to eat, and we just to joke about what Silverado's (which is sort of the default gay bar I guess) must offer. Cocktail wienies, vegan rocky mountain oysters, and little packets of crème fraîche, maybe?

Casuistry, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 16:43 (fifteen years ago) link

oh hell yeah:

On Saturday July 26th only at 7:45 at the Hollywood Theatre, The Grindhouse Film Festival presents an incredibly rare 35mm screening of SHAOLIN VS. WU TANG!

SHAOLIN VS. WU TANG (1981) It’s Shaolin shadow boxing vs. Wu Tang sword style in this kung fu classic! An evil lord murders a Wu Tang master in an attempt to turn the Shaolin and Wu Tang against each other. The two schools each begin training to prepare for a showdown while the villainous lord attempts to combine the two styles to become the supreme kung fu master. This is old school kung fu at its best, filled with excellent fight scenes, strange training sequences, martial arts weaponry, and an opening credit sequence that alone is worth the price of admission. Starring and directed by Shaw Brothers superstar Gordon Liu (36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN) with fight choreography by the great Lau Kar Leung.

I recently discovered this 35mm print buried in an old film vault, long forgotten. The print is in perfect condition and had never been run through a projector. Until now, this movie has only survived on poor quality butchered bootleg video. Don’t miss this!

PLUS: 35mm Kung Fu trailers! We’ll also be giving away a vinyl copy of the Wu Tang Clan’s initial album “Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers)” which heavily samples this movie, courtesy of Jackpot Records. For more information and advance tickets: www.grindhousefilmfest.com The Grindhouse Film Festival is an independent production, not associated with the Hollywood Theatre.

Adrienne Barbeau

Film, television, and Broadway star Adrienne Barbeau and New York Times-bestselling author Michael Scott team up for Vampyres of Hollywood (Thomas Dunne Books), a sexy, scary, and deliciously clever novel full of Hollywood glamour, behind-the-scenes secrets, and the truly bloodthirsty reality of Tinseltown. "Compulsively readable," cheers Publishers Weekly. "Briskly paced and full of fang-in-cheek humor, this novel is one of the more entertaining recent works of supernatural noir."

oh anyways as to the question for the revive, kingfish is right. people tend to like the eastside better and it's cheaper and you'll definitely want to live pretty close in. and if you want to make a rash decision about moving somewhere this is a pretty good place to come. everybody seems to love it here, at least for a few years. it can be hard to get a job unless you know someone is the only real caveat.

I want to move to Portland, sight unseen. Or Seattle, seen for a week several years ago.

Is one more affordable than the other? What are the pros and cons of each city?

warning, #4 can't be unseen (WilliamC), Sunday, 12 October 2014 19:51 (nine years ago) link

I was born in Portland and have lived here almost every year of my life and yet I feel strangely ill-equipped to answer this question in a way that you would find relevant. The best I can say for Portland is that it doesn't consider itself a big city or act like one, which is not true of Seattle. Seattle has always been a striving, ambitious city.

Both cities have plenty of places to go and things you can do, and if you wish you can lead a quiet, happy and unassuming life in either place. Hearsay tells me that job hunting is not easy here. I don't know about the Seattle job situation at all.

Aimless, Sunday, 12 October 2014 20:07 (nine years ago) link

i think portland is much more affordable, right? at least based on our glances at its real estate market.

both cities are about the same size, population wise. actually seattle, portland, and vancouver are all about the same size. but bc of their different histories, seattle really does have this alpha city by the sea feel, whereas portland does feel more like a pleasant city by the river. which is i guess what they are! vancouver feels like this even more massive metropolis, even though i'm pretty sure seattle has more people in the metro area.

If you income is not tied to locality, then the affordability of housing ought to be better in Portland.

the late great, Sunday, 12 October 2014 21:22 (nine years ago) link

Seattle is getting very expensive to live in if you don't work at Amazon or Microsoft. I work in social services, live in a 1-bedroom in Fremont, but I should probably go back to living with roommates if I want to ever save any money. The general consensus among many of my friends is that Seattle is quickly turning into another San Francisco and eventually we'll all be driven out to Olympia or Bellingham. Of course that doesn't solve the problem of Washington having an insanely regressive tax system.

On the other hand the local socialist/progressive movement did manage to make $15/hr a real thing. And I'm regularly stunned to be living in such a beautiful place.

JoeStork, Sunday, 12 October 2014 21:26 (nine years ago) link

Portland is much more affordable for housing than Seattle. It's also got a better public transportation infrastructure. No sales tax in Oregan. No income tax in Washington. Because of the Columbia river gorge (which is beautiful and, predictably, gorgeous), Portland is 10 degrees colder than Seattle in winter and 10 degrees warmer in summer.

Jaq, Sunday, 12 October 2014 21:31 (nine years ago) link

both cities are about the same size, population wise. actually seattle, portland, and vancouver are all about the same size.

well the Seattle metro area is about a million people larger than Portland. But pdx and vancouver are both around that 2.3m level.

Rents in Portland have nearly doubled in the last five years due to increasing imports of under-30's. So while housing prices have returned to the sort of pre-bubble numbers, I'm finding myself priced out on a 1br further and further from the centers of the city.

Clay, Sunday, 12 October 2014 21:39 (nine years ago) link

My brother-in-law lived in Portland for the last six or seven years, and just moved to Seattle. There were a lot of reasons but job availability was kind of a big one; he always talks about everyone he knew in Portland having to hustle and have three part time jobs to make it work, even if cost of living was noticeably cheaper than Seattle.

I live like half a day's drive from both places and have spent a good bit of time in both, and from that perspective Seattle definitely feels like a much larger, shinier, more grown-up city than Portland which feels like a really big town. I think I counted 6 or 7 giant construction cranes over Seattle when I was there in July, much more development, condos all over, etc. I also think scenery wise Seattle is much more beautiful. I'd happily live in either though, and it's really kind of a toss-up which I'd move to if it ever came to that.

Yeah, I'd say visit each city first, which is what I did 10 years ago. Portland and Seattle are both PacNW places with considerable immigration rates, but have different vibes, pricing, tech economies, traffic, and sprawl. Mass-transit is viable(mostly) in Portland, for example.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 21:33 (nine years ago) link

East. "hate" is strong, but--
rents are way out of proportion with actual quality of life
public transit is a joke (knew that going in though tbf)
hipster libertarians
too much whitey
"boomtown" feel there is surprisingly shallow/ boring

sexxx attic (will), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 21:48 (nine years ago) link

I lived there from 2001-2005 and just went back last year for the first time in a while to see some friends and was blown away by how the city has changed in the last (at the time) 8 years. East Nashville was not a place you used to want to get too deep into no matter what color you are. Gentrification has some downsides for sure, but it's good for East Nashville.

I guess your willingness to embrace it depends on how many people you know there, though. Once I moved away, several of my old friends actually moved TO there and in the years since I've made a lot of friends-of-friends online and now I'm kind of sad I left.

ha the girl i'm dating lives there (as far south in midtwown as you can be without being in downtown), so i visit pretty often. i actually dig it there way more than i ever expected to. the PATH trails, Piedmont Park, all the Midtown/ East ATL neighborhoods. and the trees! everywhere!

biggest beef is that downtown seems to be struggling without a strong residential pop. and moving the Braves to the burbs seems short-sighted, even if it makes total sense now demographically.

"What are the pros and cons of each city?"

Somewhat duplicative, but Seattle is more of a big (real, imo) city than Portland (though still not quite a Boston or San Francisco), and probably has more and better-paying jobs and superior cultural/intellectual life, as well as greater diversity (of various kinds) and large bodies of water. Portland, which at last has a river, has more of a tight-knit community of young people of a hip orientation, as well as a few extra degrees fahrenheit, and is cheaper and slower-paced. I would choose Seattle over Portland, easy, but many prefer the reverse.

benbbag, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 23:22 (nine years ago) link

portland has two giant rivers *ahem*

Clay, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 23:27 (nine years ago) link

I've lived in both cities and I prefer the slower pace of Portland. The waspy hipsters are grating and the nearest strip next to our house (Division) has turned into three-mile Pinterest board, but hey our house has jumped $80K in value over the last year so go Portlandia.

Darin, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 23:45 (nine years ago) link

while it is exceedingly obvious in retrospect, one thing i wish people told me before i moved to portland is that it is the whitest major city in america. i came here from sf and that is absolutely what i like least about here, though supposedly the trend is improving (full disclosure: i am white)

best thing about portland is the amenities to affordability ratio for sure. there's a crazy amount of delicious, nationally-recognized, relatively affordable food options here and i haven't seen anything remotely like it elsewhere in the country. beer is similar - not only is there an insane amount of beer and breweries and taprooms etc, but prices are better than nearly anywhere else i've lived or visited.

in terms of bike infrastructure, there is also no comparison to seattle. transit is overrated here but i still think it's prob objectively better than seattle. housing prices are definitely better too, though portland has one of the tightest rental markets in the country.

other things portland is famous for:

urban planning and the growth boundary
high levels of civic engagement (this is not always a good thing)
parks and green infrastructure
ppl do not dress up often, which is usually sort of terrible but hey w/e it's liberating
small neighborhood-feel on a large scale
chickens and goats are legal in your yard
the sports apparel industry
food cart pods
across-the-board great thai food (seattle has good thai too but not like us imo)
friendly people (b/c most are midwestern transplants)
voted "most active city" (or something like that) but people eat and drink so much it sorta balances out

while it is exceedingly obvious in retrospect, one thing i wish people told me before i moved to portland is that it is the whitest major city in america. i came here from sf and that is absolutely what i like least about here, though supposedly the trend is improving (full disclosure: i am white)

The research I've been doing on Portland has been pretty upfront about this. It's one of the bigger downsides on my list of pros and cons.

I have been in Seattle nearly two years now and I like it a lot basically, but I haven't visited Portland yet. Also I've been earning $TECHCO money which helps in the bonkers rental market. Our local government is not exceptionally corrupt-seeming though the PD is fucked up, the state tax regime is garbage but could be fixed, tech bros are obnoxious en masse but individually are fine, Seattle is highly unlikely to become "another San Fancisco" even if Amazon hires another 10,000 developers in the next five years b/c the massive structural obstacles to denser multifamily development that plague SF proper don't really exist here. Portland doesn't fluoridate their water, which is kinda nonsensical.

fluoridation thing here is so so dumb. this ties into my civic engagement comment above

otm and otm

the massive structural obstacles to denser multifamily development that plague SF proper don't really exist here.

tru. even with all the development there are parking lots everywhere. 2nd and pine until recently ffs. one of the many things i love about seattle is that we don't have these massive overplanned developments (south waterfront in portland, all of vancouver) that age at the same rate. it's a big building here, a big building there, knit into the fabric more than a lot of places. (south lake union could be an argument but there's still 20 years of development space)

BUNNYBRAINS
Part of PICA TBA:16’s Makeup on Empty Space, curated by Kristan Kennedy, Visual Art Curator, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. Co-presented with the Center for Contemporary Art and Culture director Mack McFarland.
Dan Seward, also known as Bunnybrains, is a musician, curator and promoter in Hudson, New York, where he runs the celebrated (and somewhat nomadic) record store, John Doe Records. This exhibition focuses on Bunnybrains’ thirty plus years as a transgressive, mutable, collaborative, performative project and what it means to illustrate the life of a true muse. From live broadcasts of Bunnybrains radio show Battlefield Earth, participatory workshops, rotating guest exhibitions, spontaneous happenings and performances, the artist shares their space with you in an effort to vivify “Bunnybrains is all.”
Bunnybrains’ career highlights include a vinyl only pressing with Matador, a national tour supporting Devendra Banhart, a four-CD boxset that garnered raves from the indie press, and opening for a reunited Hawkwind—a set credited with giving the many hippies in attendance bad trips.

A while ago I stumbled across something that still trips me out.

We like to think of red lining as being a terrible problem of the past. But so much of that urban legacy still lives with us. The past as they say is not even past.

— Tim Dickinson (@7im) June 23, 2020

...thread...

To recap: A bunch of rich white folk got together just 10 years ago to make their exclusive neighborhood even more economically inhospitable (esp. to people of color) by getting it blessed by the National Historic Register -- on the basis of it having historically banned blacks.

— Tim Dickinson (@7im) June 23, 2020

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 22:41 (three years ago) link

I know that neighborhood well.

The major bone of contention is 'infill', where the city is trying to increase housing availability through zoning changes to allow greater density, mainly as multi-dweller units like duplexes or row housing. This is due to Oregon having land use laws that limit urban sprawl. As Portland attracts more people, they all compete for limited housing stock, driving up prices. SF and Seattle have seen similar dynamics, but that's due more to their topography; they can't sprawl into the bay, or the ocean, or Lake Washington. In Portland it is the Urban Growth Boundary.

The second leading factor at work here is that Portland in the 1970s embarked on a political program to push more power into neighborhood associations. For the city to impose new rules without getting some buy-in from the affected neighborhood associations is an arduous, time-consuming process. This neighborhood association is stacked with officers who are vehemently dead set against any increase in housing density. They are sitting in a beautiful neighborhood with tree-lined streets, living in nice houses that constantly appreciate in value. They are very, very happy with the status quo. The "historic register" gambit is their last gasp effort to resist having to change in any way.

However, I'd say the idea that this is a move to exclude people of color is misguided. It is entirely designed to protect privilege, but it would be more accurate to say it is wealthy privilege more than white privilege. In reality the changes the city is trying to introduce would not result in any appreciable influx of POC. It would just introduce high end multi-unit housing, bringing more residents and more traffic, and slowly altering the 'character' of the neighborhood. But the neighborhood would still be predominately white upper-middle class, just as it is today. Anyone with the right amount of money can live there now and probably be welcomed, so long as they kept up their house and yard.

they can't sprawl into the bay, or the ocean, or Lake Washington

(Seattle has plenty of room north and south of the bit between the lake and the sound; the main problem is that it has about 12 blocks where you're even allowed to build four storey buildings, let alone eight or 20.)

planning a family trip to portland this summer. the idea is set base in portland and alternate spending time in the city with day trips to see some PNW nature and scenery.

are there any particular areas of the city (or outskirts) i should be looking at for airbnbs? we found a decent looking place in irvington, would that be OK? main priority is being able to walk to food or parks, other priorities i guess would just be character and being able to get out of town easily

also please recommend your favorite day trips out of the city. seems like cannon beach/astoria is a big one.

na (NA), Monday, 21 February 2022 14:16 (two years ago) link

I don't know a lot of the minutia of portland neighborhood names but based on google maps Irvington looks like it would be a decent bet. I'd usually find myself along Williams/Mississippi in north portland or Hawthorne/Belmont on the east side when we'd go wandering and it's not for from either of those. It's also been five years since I've been there and a lot has probably changed.

We're going out in June and are staying like one night in Portland and a few along the coast near Astoria. Astoria is nice but not strictly necessary if you're hitting the coast - which you should do because it's really amazing. Cannon Beach is kind of our default spot but we've stayed at a number of places between Astoria and Manzanita. Seaside was kind of a methy shithole though at least based on what I saw of it.

In the other direction heading east along the gorge is worth it too - Multnomah falls is worth checking out and there are a lot of hikes and such along the gorge with amazing scenery. Hood River is also a fun place to stop and and get a beer and watch hundreds of people kiteboarding.

joygoat, Monday, 21 February 2022 15:10 (two years ago) link

thanks! looking forward to this trip - i haven't been to the PNW at all except for a work trip to seattle, and i couldn't get out of the city on that one. we had talked about trying to do some combo of seattle, portland, and vancouver/victoria, but decided to scale back so it wouldn't be as stressful and bc we realized we mostly cared about seeing portland and some regional parks/forests/beaches/falls/mountains that are different from what we know from the midwest and east coast. i still want to do vancouver/victoria some day but that will be a separate trip

na (NA), Monday, 21 February 2022 16:19 (two years ago) link

Irvington is a nice neighborhood - I think your family will be in good shape there. Other recs: Japanese/Chinese Gardens, Bend, OR (longer drive - 3 hrs, but cool if you want to check out the dessert/mountains), Mt. Hood, wine country (Dundee Hills/McMinneville).

Astoria is definitely worth a stop on the way out to the coast. It was originally planned as the west coast's versions of NYC, but development stalled during the depression. As a result, it's the only coastal town with really neat older architecture. Also, if you like beer, they have some great breweries with good food (St. George and Buoy).

I'd second Manzanita as a great coastal town. Seaside and Cannon Beach get v touristy.

is portland just another ridiculously expensive unequal dystopia like every u.s. city right now?

pretty much unfortunately, housing is impossibly overpriced, landlords have way too much power, the cops are some of the worst in the country, the mayor is a quisling who refuses to do anything about the cops even after they literally tear-gassed him. also, the expensive unequal dystopia aspect of it does a lot to perpetuate portland's particular racial history, which is to say that of "no blacks allowed".

that said it's queer as fuck and particularly _trans_ as fuck, everybody else is like "where can i go now" and this is literally the place of last resort for me, i live here or i die here. there are tons of us, we're building community, we're working really hard to support each other, and we're not always doing a great job of it but a lot of us are doing the work.

One of the main local(Multnomah County) ballot measure campaigns going on right now is Eviction Representation for All (ERA). It’s trying to get in place a system that nobody getting dragged thru eviction court goes without legal representation.

https://www.eratenants.org/

So that’s one small effort to push against the real estate. It also helps to push against naïve comfortable upper-middle-class people who have parasocial relationships with the Democratic Party by pointing out the reason why things are as bad as they are in the state and city is because most of the elected Dems in Salem are all landlords.

Spent a couple nights there last month, it was fun and I still love the place but holy shit has it grown in five years. Like we walked to a branch of Fifty Licks for non-dairy ice cream and ended up in an entire neighborhood at the end of 21st street that was just parking lots last time I was there and was now vast expanses of condos for yuppies. I went to Old Town Music and crossing the Burnside bridge was surreal, there are half a dozen tall buildings on the east side none of which I remember being there in 2017.

joygoat, Saturday, 2 July 2022 19:35 (one year ago) link

same deal in slc, just completely taken over by real estate interests, to the point where half the roads are one-lane or shut down entirely because new condos need to go up

I was there last month and it was a really nice time, outside of work anyway. Perfect weather (I guess it’s normally like that in June? Idk). I didn’t have time to get out of the city but got to see some old friends and check out parts I didn’t catch my first two times there (2011, 2021) And it seemed p much back to “”normal””??? certainly compared to feb 2021, in the aftermath of all the cops and proud boy shit, downtown all boarded up and and oh yeah a nice little snowstorm that brought everything to a halt for a couple of days

lol last month? we called it "june-uary", it was fucking cold and wet the whole month. up until LAST WEEKEND which was 100 degrees, hot, dry. to the extent that pdx has anything like "normal" weather (anthropogenic climate change and all that) it's more like it is now for this time of year - upper 70s, lower 80s, mostly dry, gets hot in august then starting in september we have about 12 false autumns.

"normal" is a relative term i guess. we took covid precautions a lot more seriously than a lot of people i feel like, which had some effects. i'm leaving the house more these days, except for the past couple of weeks when mostly i've been eating ice cream and lying in bed crying instead of finding an apartment and packing to move like i'm supposed to be doing. "normal".

Been spending a lot of time in Portland over the past year.

Things I like:
- pinball everywhere
- still possible to find out about shows/events/rallies from fliers stuck on telephone poles
- every house has an eccentric lawn
- coconut rice at the Burmese food cart
- the Japanese garden
- walkable most days with a poncho or umbrella
- no sales tax (automatically 10.5% cheaper than Chicago)
- walking through Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge
- sunset after 9 p.m. this time of year

oh, i'd fully intended to die in this house, but the other thing about not leaving the house for 18 months is that it fairly well torpedoed my marriage, so we're sort of desperately trying to sell the house before the housing market tanks completely. my spending the last couple of weeks lying in bed eating ice cream and crying is sort of getting in the way of that :(

we had a great time in portland and the surrounding area! we pared back some plans bc they were a bit overambitious for our kids' patience and my stamina for driving on twisty mountain roads, but we still saw a lot in the city and around mt. hood and down part of the coast. it was beautiful and sunny and hot pretty much the whole time we were there, so that was lucky. my favorite things were hoyt arboretum, the smaller beaches we hit between cannon beach and manzanita (short sands and hug point iirc), food cart pods, and just exploring different neighborhoods.

We are actually heading to Portland in the middle of August with our son, really happy to hear any recommendations in the city and area for things to do with a 10 year-old. Ideally a balance between cool things to check out in the city and some easy-ish nature walk type stuff too. Definitely going to put Hoyt on our list.

For ten year olds, there are a few cool things I'd recommend in Portland:

Forrest Park is a 5,200 acre urban park with some spectacular views of Mt. Hood, Mt. Rannier and Mt. Saint Helens on a clear day.
Mount Tabor is a large forested park covering an extinct volcano with tennis courts, a playground & 360-degree views.
The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry is a science and technology museum. It contains three auditoriums, including a large-screen theatre, planetarium, and exhibition halls with a variety of hands-on permanent exhibits focused on natural sciences, industry, and technology.

LOL yep, same community that won't allow fluoride in the drinking water because something something

Another fun Mt. Tabor activity to consider if you are in town on August 20th is the annual go kart races. People all around Portland build wacky vehicles and race them down the park. Lot of fun to watch. Video of past event below.

The Saturday morning farmers market has tons of good food and has lots of open space. I think it would be pretty easy to pick a neighborhood or street to wander down - Belmont, Alberta, Division, etc - and find things for everyone to enjoy and probably somewhere to sit outside and get a drink and good food.

They’re less of an experience but I find Belmont Books and Mother Foucault’s much more satisfying than Powell’s.

what's that old elementary school that now has live five taprooms in it? I liked that place when I was there a few years back

Kennedy School ^^ Fun place, good outdoor courtyard, really good for brunch too.

recommendations for places with outdoor seating for good food and kid friendly with beer would be appreciated as well.

Baerlic Brewing's 11th Street location also has Ranch Pizza, which is one of the best pizzas I've had in a long time (Detroit-style). The beer is really good too, and it has outdoor seating and is definitely kid-friendly before 9 p.m.

There's also a Baerlic Taproom and outdoor tables at The Barleypod (6035 NE Halsey), which has a great range of food trucks too.

Grand Central is a bakery chain, really good for breakfast sandwiches, coffee, etc.

I think it would be pretty easy to pick a neighborhood or street to wander down - Belmont, Alberta, Division, etc - and find things for everyone to enjoy and probably somewhere to sit outside and get a drink and good food.

pretty much everyplace has outdoor seating since covid

the graffiti really started picking up around the time of the 2020 anti-racism protests, pdx has kind of a real bad cop problem and our mayor refuses to do anything about it. also there are a lot lot lot more homeless people but gee go figure our landlord mayor isn't doing anything to help ease _that_ issue either. and all anybody talks about is whether we should _tolerate_ homeless folks, like y'all my friends don't want to be _tolerated_ they want places where they can _live_

anyway re: suggestions, y'all pretty much have it handled. the graffiti is ok except when you can't read the road signs because of it. i saw a penis girl tag for the first time last night, penis girl was viral last year or something but i'd never actually seen any of their (they're non-binary) tags before now

the one thing i will say is that downstairs at powell's has a really good children's section, it's huge and can be overwhelming (which i kinda didn't think about before inviting an autistic friend from out of town to visit) but it's definitely kid-friendly

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 21 July 2022 13:48 (one year ago) link

i was gonna say last night, but didn't cuz i felt like my post was already getting too long: there are places to eat outside with decent or better beer or every block in Portland. and they're all kid-friendly enough if you put your mind to it, as a family did the other night when i ate at Killingsworth Station and their three little kids chased each other in circles around me while their parents largely ignored them. (it's fine, i have kids, i get it.)

If you're looking for outdoor seating with beer options, there are food cart pods everywhere. Everyone in the family can have something from different carts and many of the pods have a beer/cocktail cart.

While there is indeed not much between PDX and Bend, if you do find yourself heading out to Hood or back and get hungry, you can't go wrong with Skyway Bar and Grill in Zig Zag. Decent BBQ (Not Matt's BBQ level), lots of outdoor seating and appropriate libations. Another option is a few miles away, in Welches, is Koya Kitchen.

Enjoy your time in Oregon. August can be a top-tier time to visit!

Kate (rushomancy), Friday, 22 July 2022 00:37 (one year ago) link

I had a bathroom freakout awhile ago in Oakland, at a new park near Brooklyn Basin.. I walked in and there were several women in there, and I just turned around and fled in fear that I had done something wrong

My girlfriend came out and said that they all had a laugh at my reaction. I guess it was my first experience with a truly mixed public bathroom (ala Ally McBeal) rather than "all gender" private rooms - and I didn't handle it well, I was kinda embarrassed

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 22 July 2022 00:58 (one year ago) link

ahhh, i think there's nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about, particularly given all the hubbub about how awful and terrible a violation it is to have "men" (meaning women) in women's restrooms. you walk into a restroom and see a bunch of women there when you're not expecting it, it's natural to feel like you've made a mistake. i avoided using women's restrooms for a long, long time because i was worried about it. in portland i guess it was maybe an issue at _some_ point - a women's restroom my ex went in while i was still "questioning" had a sign there telling cis women to not be fucking karens about trans women needing to use the loo in no uncertain terms - but by the time i transitioned in '19 it seemed to be a dead issue. fortunately for me nowadays anybody ignorant to raise a stink about me needing to pee is probably too ignorant to figure out i'm trans, but the few people who are weird about trans shit are _really_ fucking weird about it...

so I was in portland last summer for three days and found it really depressing. I think this was down to where we stayed (right at the edge of Chinatown); most of downtown seemed to have gone completely out of business and there was a huge amount of people shooting up heroin right at the entrance to the hotel. Going over the river to visit our friend was better, but I was left with an overwhelming feeling of "well I already live in the bay area so I'm not sure why any of this is better'. . . we did go up partially as reconnaissance to determine whether it would make sense to just sell our house and relocate to somewhere we wouldn't have much of a mortgage, and I guess that's still on the table. But other than some very great waffles, I was underwhelmed by almost everything. But I'm sure I'll be back up there again in the next year.

eugene and corvallis are college towns, eugene a large liberal arts school (increasingly sports-oriented over the last 20-25 years) and corvallis more science/agri-oriented, and the towns reflect that. I did undergrad in eugene so my memories are blurry and pretty much rooted in the 2000-2003 music scenes etc. corvallis i don't know much about, never had much reason to stop there when passing by or through. dated a woman from salem a few years back and it kinda has, like, old rust-belt city qualities? seems like a lot of sprawl, too, from stayton to independence. the main street/downtown area seemed to be going through a revitalization back then (2017ish?), and it's just as dreary as anywhere in the willamette valley (good thing imo)

Clay, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 02:42 (one year ago) link

thanks. i've noticed a fair amount of jobs in my line of work posted in salem, it being the capital and all (i do state gov records management), but know nothing about it. ultimately looking for somewhere relatively cheap, relatively liberal and with good trail running very close by. i think i've narrowed things down to oregon and colorado though haven't completely ruled out california.

yeah salem could be ideal for you! its in the valley so you're always gonna at worst be like an hour car ride from some trail run you've never seen and never imagined before and at best you'll have a 5-10 minute jog to a regular one you can do every other day or whatever you schedule is (barring weather, always). oregon gets pretty weird, politically, outside of the central cities and upper coast, it's the west after all, but i can assure you salem is relatively liberal and significantly cheaper than portland.

Clay, Tuesday, 17 January 2023 02:56 (one year ago) link

cool, thanks for the encouragement.

it's the west after all
loool yeah.

I'd also add most OR state gov jobs are pretty cool about telecommuting so that might open up some options for you when looking for a place to live.

applying for a state of oregon 4rchives job in salem. probably a long shot and a move on credit in the next 3 months would be tough but i've gotta start practicing applications. salem ticks a lot of our boxes: more water, little snow, somewhat progressive (compared to ut4h), not as desirable (i.e. more affordable) but close to a major city, trail runs within 10 minutes. also it's a good job, entry level reference and digital access, hybrid remote, decent wage.

we visited l.a. last weekend, first time i'd really checked it out since library school 15 years ago. i loved it then but it's too crowded and expensive for us now, my friends with good library jobs there are in increasingly precarious situations, and idk i just don't feel like i can compete in a big city any more, i'm not career-hungry, i work to live, hate crowded gyms, i sleep 9 hours a night & i need more chill than that.

Salem is a good call imo, prob the most underappreciated city in Oregon currently

Salem has its qualities, certainly. My partner’s family loves there.

My sis is a special collections librarian at Oregon St. in Corvallis, & she really loves it there. Her partner is from Salem area.

BlackIronPrison, Saturday, 11 March 2023 01:53 (one year ago) link

I worked the archives and special collections at Washington State for years, and there was a lot of connections and movement between other Pac12 / PNW area institutions. I know a lot of people who were at or moved on to university gigs at Idaho, UW, OSU, Oregon, and state jobs in Salem and Olympia.

Salem is the one I know the least but the person I know there kind of stumbled into it but really likes it.

My wife has worked for the state of Oregon for over a decade (although she works remotely/in an office in Portland). The benefits (esp. retirement and health insurance) are pretty great.

Meeting some friends here next Thursday to Monday. Any bars/breweries to see live music that don't require tix ahead of time?

Laurelthirst!

you are just barely missing Michael Hurley, sorry to say

Oh, damn!

Thanks for the recommendation. This looks great.

http://www.rontoms.net/sunday-sessions

The Rontoms Sunday sessions are a thing to see, free show, nice venue, not a dive bar, meant to be a sort of showcase for the Portland scene such as it is and they do a pretty good job, have shared a bill with Yuvees who are playing next and they are solid

Many other bars/venues with live music friendly to walk-ins as well, depending on what vibe you're after, happy to make a more specific recommendation regarding style/neighborhood but

https://nearhear.app/

keeps tabs on most of them, with little preview clips of the bands playing

Florin Cuchares, Thursday, 22 June 2023 17:56 (eleven months ago) link

That’s super helpful.

Especially interested in breweries with music in the afternoon or early evening.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Thursday, 22 June 2023 17:59 (eleven months ago) link

Seconding Laurelthirst. Also Turn! Turn! Turn! has bands of all kinds every night.

Interesting question about breweries--not sure why none that come to mind double as music venues. But Migration Brewing's taproom is literally a block from Laurelthirst (and Laurelthirst itself has a great tap list).

underwater as a compliment (Eazy), Thursday, 22 June 2023 18:28 (eleven months ago) link

yeah drawing a blank on breweries with live music somehow, I guess almost any bar has lots of fancy beer on tap but still, can't even think of one besides Lola's Room? and it seems like they only do music video dance parties lately

Florin Cuchares, Thursday, 22 June 2023 18:59 (eleven months ago) link

the turn turn turn has a very well curated vinyl/cassette shop in the back in addition to the live music, definitely worth a visit

Florin Cuchares, Thursday, 22 June 2023 19:04 (eleven months ago) link

Turn, Turn, Turn sounds very cool. We're meeting friends in Portland, so I may have to pick and choose my battles, but hope I can make it.

Visiting Portland for eight days (from New Zealand) mid-September - my partner lived there for a good chunk of time pre-Covid so will be visiting friends, but taking note of bookstore/music venue/food/etc recommendations upthread. Are any of the well-known big gardens/parks more or less suitable for a toddler?

etc, Sunday, 27 August 2023 22:51 (nine months ago) link

absolutely, my daughter's fav when she was toddler age (a few years ago) was this:

https://www.portland.gov/parks/westmoreland-park

lots of weird stuff to clamber around on and a very large sandy area with water features? great times, cool neighborhood

she also enjoyed the hike up to "witches castle"

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_House_(Portland,_Oregon)

beautiful trail up a creek ripe for investigation, although this was mostly interesting for her I think because I tried to play it down (not really a castle, no witches) and then when we finally arrived there was a straight up coven of witches up there, all in long flowy dresses standing in a circle around candles and fancy bowls of who knows what

I cannot guarantee there will be actual witches if you visit

can't rule it out, though... you never know what will happen in a public park. me and my primary went to a group hangout at a public park in pdx late this morning, lovely shady park, even though it was a hot day it was early enough that it hadn't gotten too hot yet, and the shade helped. it was fun. i, uh, don't know how you'd explain it to your toddler, etc, and no, i'm not going to go into more detail than that on a public board, but it was fun.

pdx folx, sorry i've been such a stranger lately... kind of been through some shit, i'm doing better now and am starting to sort of emerge from my shell... anybody who wants to hang out HMU in DM :)

super cool! yeah, the stone house is pretty famous around here... i haven't been myself.

the city's changed a lot since the recently-passed daytime camping ban. still trying to wrap my head around it.
