So, Flyers have a goalie now, huh?

Psyduck is My Spirit Animal (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 23 June 2011 22:26 (twelve years ago) link

haha i was just about to say that while i appreciate the flyers' newfound commitment to goaltending, is ilya bryzgalov really that good?

he seems like the kind of guy that is constantly on the verge of saying or doing something stupid. flyers fans are gonna shit on him if he isn't awesome

ok

a) the flyers are insane. i mean i have no idea what they're even doing
b) ppl are paying way too much for players like ville leino
c) caps did a great job -- fleeced the avs for varmalov, picked up vokoun
d) even at 39, jaromir jagr is a clown -- i got no problem with going to philly, they offered much more money -- but you don't even *respond* to contract offers from pittsburgh/detroit? that's like school in the summertime
e) too much money, maybe, but good job for the rangers getting richards
f) kind of curious if the devils will ever hire a coach
g) welcome back winnepeg j-e-t-s <3
h) fuc this realignment shit -- i don't want to be in a division that includes florida/tampa
i) rip paul kariya
j) god bless brian burke for visiting the troops on canada day but dude that's basically the single most important day of your year at yr job
k) . . .

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman's salary has more than doubled since the 2004-05 lockout with his current salary at $7.5 million for the fiscal year ending June 30 of last year, according to SportsBusiness Journal.

Bettman received a 4 percent increase during the 2009-10 season. The league's most recent tax filing showed $5,787,524 in base salary, $826,369 in other compensation, $877,587 in deferred compensation and $25,988 in benefits.

According to the report, Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig earns $18.35 million annually and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell earns $10.9 million. NBA commissioner David Stern's salary is not reported publicly but is believed to be more than $10 million.

Bettman was paid $3.7 million the year of the lockout, but total revenue generated by the NHL, NHL Enterprises and member clubs has increased from $2.1 billion to $2.9 billion during that period, according to SportsBusiness Journal.

The tax filing also showed NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly's pay increased 7.4 percent to more than $2 million and senior vice president Colin Campbell earned $1.5 million.

okay bettman sux and that is a lot of money but i guess he *is* the commish and has to put up with the booing everywhere he goes.

i'm not aware of any posnanski types as far as individual writers go.

puck daddy is very active -- probably 10 posts a day even during the summer.

sports illustrated's red light blog is less prolific but somewhat more long-form.

james mirtle at the globe and mail is as good as anyone on applying advanced stats to hockey. he's a bit leafs-focused tho, due to his employer.

this guy seems to be pretty into point shares and similar analysis, but i haven't really read him.

also hearty lols at tortorella relentlessly burying sean avery last week:

"I don't want to jam up Sean here - I think we have better players than Sean Avery, plain and simple," Tortorella said in a small gathering with reporters on the second floor of the team's hotel. "I can dodge it ten different ways, without trying to run Sean over. I thought he had a good camp. But I think with the makeup of our team, and some of the people we've added, and some of the youth we've added as far as depth put Sean in this spot.

"The players that are here are better than Sean Avery," Tortorella reiterated. "Maybe not in the role or a couple instances Sean could help us in, but they're more versatile in a lot of different areas.

"I'm trying to do this the right way, because I do not wanna keep on shoveling dirt over Sean Avery, but we have better players than Sean Avery, right now on the hockey club."

yeah, i don't really get that one -- it seems like 'grit' with 27 nhl games should be cheaper than hodgson.

maybe if shanahan had shown the nerve to suspend shea weber (on a clear shot to the head/intent to injure) the first round wouldn't have degenerated into ufc.

what if zetterberg had had to be stretchered off? what if hossa had bounced back up? are those hits suddenly dirtier or cleaner?

and what if torres were his team's captain instead of a checker?

Zirin's column on Ward and Thomas and Boston racism.

Old Boston is also part of this story, as much as many from New England don’t want to hear it. No city in the United States has a more tortured intersection of race and sports than our supposed cradle of liberalism and democracy. It’s the city whose Boston Red Sox were the last team to integrate, waiting until 1959 twelve years after Jackie Robinson broke through with the Brooklyn Dodgers. It’s the city that for decades rejected the greatest team basketball player in history, Bill Russell, because of his proud, unblinking opposition to racial intolerance. After dealing with years of everything from verbal abuse to the vandalizing of his home, Russell called the city “a flea market of racism.” Boston then embraced Larry Bird, to such a passionate degree his very jersey became a symbol of white arrogance, exemplified in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing. It’s also paradoxically, (and fitting in a city this paradoxical) the first hockey town to integrate, when Willie O’Ree took the ice for the Bruins in 1958 (he would be the NHL’s last Black player for 16 years). Now, when Joel Ward plays the hero, the reflex is the “N” bomb. As Faulkner said, “The past is not dead. It isn’t even past.”

Waterloo? Oh, we've sunsetted that. (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 26 April 2012 19:05 (twelve years ago) link

i've got a hockey question. i'm a total hockey newb (i watch a playoff game every year or so - generally when flyers are in them) but this year i've really been enjoying it - i think partially bc exciting flyer team and that hbo hockey show and the playoffs have been kinda riveting to me. so apologies for barging in. i was just wondering about shots on goal and saves. obv a team that takes a lot of shots is going to actually score more often than a team that takes less. when a team has a lot of shots on goal, but fewer points than you would expect, what would that generally indicate? a team that has a hard time closing? or that they were playing a particularly better goalie?

Mordy, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:18 (eleven years ago) link

fewer points goals

could be a really good goalie, but there are shots and shots. flipping a puck on goal from center ice is not as dangerous as a point-blank shot from the slot. that sort of stuff evens out over the long term -- the fact that quick and lundqvist have awesome save percentages isn't an illusion -- but in a single game might not mean much.

you can see the difference in the shot percentages of forwards and defensemen -- a top forward will score on maybe 15% of his shots while a top defenseman is maybe half that.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:27 (eleven years ago) link

thx, that makes sense. btw, i love in this NJ/PHI game that when flyers have had power plays they've been executing these really tight passing formations. kinda reminds me of a pass-heavy basketball team.

It's hard to explain, but it hasn't been a fun or enjoyable season for me. There's been seasons I've had a lot more fun with where the wings have done much worse.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 00:52 (eleven years ago) link

imo it's the big home winning streak and looking pretty damn good throughout the first like 2/3 of the season before injuries etc brought it all down and the loss to nashville was a bit of an inevitability

Definitely not hoping for that on my end. Goddam I love eliminating the Flyers ESPECIALLY IN PHILLY. If we eliminate the Rangers too, I dont even care if we win the Cup. This would be the perfect season.

“ Well, it's time they got their act together, folks. They're ruining the whole league. They had better stop running a Mickey Mouse organization and put somebody on ice.

Jordan Staal to Carolina. Need good name for the 2-Staal line. Brandon Sutter will be great in Pittsburgh but I think having bot Staal bros in Carolina is going to be awesome

jared staal already in the canes' minor league system; too bad marc won't be a free agent until 2015

Shanny not in

Grimy Little Pimp (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 27 June 2012 03:06 (eleven years ago) link

shanny is 25th all-time in points and 13th in goals

i don't like him, but that's pretty solid

oates sixth all-time in assists plus i was in a bar with him once

OK I am not being clear. I don't like Sundin's or Bure's career numbers or trajectories. Sakic & Oates & Shanny I have np with

Canada Cup Winner in 1976.
Vezina Trophy Winner in 1968.

How in the world did Sundin get in? My mom has an irrational love for Sundin, maybe she's a secret voter.

I found him in a Bon Ton ad (Nicole), Wednesday, 27 June 2012 03:41 (eleven years ago) link

will marty go in right away or will they wait?

obvs gretzky goes in whenever, lemieux had various health issues -- not sure if anyone else was waived. certainly marty (and maybe lidstrom) are at least candidates.

sundin's not in! xp

mookieproof, Wednesday, 27 June 2012 03:43 (eleven years ago) link

notable relevant parties:

CuJo (no cups; had the misfortune of being surrounded by Roy, Brodeur, Belfour, Hasek, Richter; seemed like a cult figure to anyone outside of St.L; was then buried in Toronto),

BELFOUR (asshole; 1,000,000 dollars, 1 SC ring),

HASEK (changed the thought process of the position; a Quick/Lundqvist 1.0; had 3 MONSTER years that I can remember and a bunch of other where he was merely spectacular, SC ring, in the path of history, it seemed),

Vernon (career sv% .890),

RICHTER (USA USA),

Brasshole (career % line 3.24, .892)

This is legitimately making me mad, it makes no sense.

I have Adam Oates's autograph somewhere, this was back when I collected hockey cards when I was a kid and wanted to get them all signed.
