the 'speculative fiction' poll was such a shitshow that sci-fi should be off the table.

romcoms all the way.

I recommend against gravity movies only because we would have too much overlap with the action thread. Too soon. No gravity.

Comedies. Also: canonized film whose appeal you find most mystifying.

I think I'm going to go with war movies, though SF and romantic comedies would be ok.

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 15:44 (twelve years ago) link

I voted war movies. It'll be interesting to see what people consider "war movies." Actual combat action? Just a wartime setting (e.g. Casablanca)?

A Full Torgo Apparition (Phil D.), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 15:45 (twelve years ago) link

The canon doesn't have an awful lot of time for comedies (even less so than action films?) so I'd love a comedy poll. I might even remember to vote in it this time.

Comedies, 'thrillers', sci-fi in that order. I'd be interested in polls of British movies and French movies. In a Brit movie poll I'd be keen to see how the results would differ between Brits and the rest of the world.

imdb top 50 would be a fun quickie poll thread (or two, best AND worst), but really doesn't need to be a ballot poll

like really anything as specific as body-swap movies or whatever, it'd be so easy to put the <50 most obvious options in a poll thread and ludicrous to do a ballot poll with rigorous tabulation and a long results rollout

TERMAINTOR 2 (some dude), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 16:20 (twelve years ago) link

Romantic comedies or Paul Masson commercials.

Serious vote for comedies, though. It's broad enough to elicit some surprising results. We probably just need to chip in on a Life Alert for Morbs before the results come in.

Also a write-in for a proper horror ballot poll, although most people seem to think the year-by-year polls are sufficient.

Is this for serious votes about what poll comes up next or lol votes? I'd be interested in a genuine 'comedies' poll or a 'best movie robot' poll. The others, not so much. 'Most-hated movies' would have too many one-vote films, surely?

Best movie robot -- I think a radio-button poll would be plenty for this.

'Most-hated movies' would have too many one-vote films, surely?

I agree with this 100%. Sounds boring.

I think the ballot polls work best with broader categories, like an artist's full discography as opposed to all the tracks on one album.

nomination threads are half the fun, though. what gets in, what gets left out, the fact that people nominate stuff that has only the most tangenial relationship to the genre. gets everyone invested before the voting even begins.

sci-fi would also be cool.

Nicholas Meyer writes a lot in his book about making The Day After, btw, and how sick doing all the research made him.

And, in the "dbags will always be dbags" category:

Commentator Ben Stein, critical of the movie's message (i.e. that the strategy of Mutual Assured Destruction would lead to a war), wrote in the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner what life might be like in an America under Soviet occupation. (Stein's idea was eventually dramatized in the miniseries Amerika, also broadcast by ABC.)

The New York Post accused Meyer of being a traitor, writing, "Why is Nicholas Meyers doing Yuri Andropov's work for him?"[5] Phyllis Schlafly declared that "This film was made by people who want to disarm the country, and who are willing to make a $7 million contribution to that cause".[5] Much press comment focused on the unanswered question in the film of who started the war.[5]

VG, me too -- it was especially traumatizing for me because:

-- My father was still on active duty in the Army when it aired, stationed at Ft. Belvoir, VA, a stone's throw from primary target Washington, DC.

-- We were living in Perry, OH, less than three miles from the Perry Nuclear Power Plant and 45 miles from Cleveland. Power generating plants and medium-sized cities were likely to be secondary/tertiary nuclear targets.

As a child of the 70s/80s, it played into all my darkest fears.

Maybe that sci-fi is a little easier to qualify, a little more codified, whereas there's more wiggle room with respect to what constitutes comedy? I dunno, just speckalaytin' on a hypothesis.

Both? It's funny you mention that, because I was thinking of that precise example, for some reason. Even though it isn't a typical sci-fi film on the surface, I'm sure everyone would agree that it fits the bill.

trying to work out why this is

erotic war comedy pollster (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 23 February 2012 00:15 (twelve years ago) link

like why would people get het up about what constitutes an action film but be laissez fair about what constitutes an sf film (people definitely had OPINIONS about what was eligible in the spec fiction poll, not sure why films would be different really - maybe the tropes are just more obvious/limited in the medium of film? I dunno)

erotic war comedy pollster (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 23 February 2012 00:16 (twelve years ago) link

i think it's a matter of how we construct our idea of the genre. like a sci-fi film = any movie that has any appreciable of sci-fi content. like, if it's got an alien or a time machine, then it's almost certainly sci-fi.

action is more tricky, because we feel that a film has to have some scale-tipping amount of action to qualify as a proper "action film" (hence blade runner squabbling). same with the fact that funny parts don't necessarily a comedy make.

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Thursday, 23 February 2012 00:20 (twelve years ago) link

'action' and 'comedy' are inevitably formal definitions of genre, 'science fiction' seems (from an ahistorical perspective like a best-of poll, at least) basically a cosmetic one

xp

desperado, rough rider (thomp), Thursday, 23 February 2012 00:24 (twelve years ago) link

yeah basically anything with science in it is a sci-fi movie, I guess...

erotic war comedy pollster (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 23 February 2012 00:24 (twelve years ago) link

i mean there's attempts at ground-up definitions which start with the claim that there's some kind of NEW THING which redefines the social or at least personal context of the action - 'novum'? i'm trying to remember if this is brian aldiss's definition or frederic jameson's - but i think this doesn't really work with a lot of interesting sf work after the 50s; i think it's inevitable that any genre partly dependent on marketable construction of such won't maintain its formal tendencies over time, though i'm not sure i could generalise that

desperado, rough rider (thomp), Thursday, 23 February 2012 00:27 (twelve years ago) link

I feel like the only instance in which the status of a sci-fi movie would be arguable is if the proposed sci-fi-ness were external to what was presented onscreen? I'm not explaining well here. I mean, like, if someone argued that Mulholland Drive is sci-fi. They may be able to expound some theory for why that is, but there isn't really anything onscreen to support that theory.

fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Thursday, 5 April 2012 18:14 (twelve years ago) link

I am suggesting an animated features poll because there's basically jillions of animated shorts from all over the world and I'm willing to bet that nobody has seen very many of them (incl. myself) so it would devolve into a Don Hertzfeldt and Looney Toons poll.

i strongly feel that animated shorts and TV shows and so on should be included in the animation poll. otherwise, it's gonna be a boring summary of the acknowledged best of disney, pixar, dreamworks and ghibli, with a few outliers here and there (bakshi, nightmare before christmas, fantastic planet, allegro non troppo, triplets of belleville, etc). i feel like i could call the top 20 from here. i mean, there just aren't anywhere near as many great animated features as there are great comedies, action movies and horror films. partly cuz they're expensive and time-consuming to produce, partly cuz they were for so long seen as kids fare.

TV stuff like how the grinch stole christmas, a charlie brown christmas and all those rankin-bass specials should be included. so should the classic warner brothers, disney and fleischer studios cartoon shorts. so should oddball animation from around the world, and webtoons or whatever. otherwise, it'll be a very dull, predictable and limited poll.

I've come around to polling animated shorts, short subjects, and features in one poll. (Not episodic TV; that really is just a whole different thing.) It'll be a bit of a clusterfuck and the rankings per se will probably not mean much but it would hopefully generate an interesting canon. Obviously at the end we can list/rank the features and shorts separately as well. Plus including shorts will give morbs more to be peeved about.

As for eligibility, I guess that could lead to some interesting discussions http://www.screenonline.org.uk/film/decades.html and http://film.britishcouncil.org/home-page would go some way to sorting out eligibility. I was interested in doing a road-movie poll, but a) I made a preliminary list of films and only got up to 58; b) no one will agree on what constitutes a road movie, plus I'd argue for Taxi Driver (because Robert De Niro's a taxi driver, and he spends a lot of time on the road), at which point Eric H. will ridicule me; and c) the better the road movie, the less that stuff actually happens. So there probably wouldn't be much to discuss.

clemenza, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 16:03 (eleven years ago) link

I'm for any poll, so long as I don't have to run it.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 16:08 (eleven years ago) link

This is the first Google doc I've tried, so I'm not sure if this works or not:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_Vo7swLaeS1ZCbciqrHKrSzlOm-DozyZBi_lpKIGGtI/edit

Those are the road movies I came up with. If anyone can think of any more, please add them. If the list grew to over a 100, that might be enough for a poll. Truthfully, I think the subject falls into a grey area--too many for a click-through poll (only 50 would mean leaving off stuff), not enough for something larger.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 14 March 2013 20:05 (eleven years ago) link

I've never seen it. If they merely do it in the road, no; it they do it on the road, yes.

clemenza, Thursday, 14 March 2013 20:10 (eleven years ago) link

Not that I'd vote for it, but you missed Duel - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067023/reference

I'm sure there are more, and I'd probably try to participate, but yeah, it's not quite a big enough genre, I don't think.

emil.y, Thursday, 14 March 2013 20:12 (eleven years ago) link

Duel, of course. I focus more on the contemplative/aimless road movies, but there are other kinds too. Anyway, I think you're right. I'll probably just split the list in two and run a couple of click-through polls.

clemenza, Thursday, 14 March 2013 20:22 (eleven years ago) link

I suppose we could always ballot poll directors.

clemenza, Thursday, 14 March 2013 20:33 (eleven years ago) link

I was wondering how much overlap a romcom poll would have with the big comedy poll, so I did a (very) quick scan of the Top 100. I only counted 10 that could go on both lists--allowing that I likely missed a few, there doesn't seem to be much overlap.

clemenza, Thursday, 14 March 2013 21:08 (eleven years ago) link

maybe because most romcoms are not actually funny lol

his girlfriend was all 'ugh and he wears a solar backpack' (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 14 March 2013 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

My personal preference, though, would be something along the lines of a noir/mystery/thriller poll, set up in a way that it didn't overlap with the action poll.

No, no, no--not upset at all! I've conceded road movies wouldn't work. I'm just going to keep adding titles to my list, and do a couple of click-throughs during the summer. But I'd make sure it didn't overlap with another movie poll.

so i've thought about running something like this for a while but i'd want to include non-movie musicals as well (tv musicals, broadway/london, etc) and i'm not totally sure how that would work

Mordy, Thursday, 4 April 2013 19:56 (eleven years ago) link

Gonna c&p my thoughts from the other thread:

How about 'dramatic narrative with music' as a definition. I for one would definitely want to be voting for Spinal Tap and Ladies & Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains as well as more traditional musicals. It wouldn't be as much fun without a certain amount of mixture, but I'm not down with documentaries being in there too.

― emil.y, Thursday, April 4, 2013 8:37 PM (15 minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

...

I realise now that my definition is pretty much any film with a soundtrack. Does it work if we make it 'dramatic narrative with diegetic songs that are central to the film's narrative'? Way to sap out all the fun of everything, emil.y.

― emil.y, Thursday, April 4, 2013 8:46 PM (6 minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

I won't be crazily upset if people do want to include documentaries and concert footage, but I prefer the idea of keeping it fictional (inclusion of a dramatic adaptation of a real life story fits this for me, as they're always pretty much fictional in the end).

emil.y, Thursday, 4 April 2013 19:56 (eleven years ago) link

Over on ILM I suggested limiting the poll to films that have had a theatrical run, so no home-video-only dealies (or films that were shown one-night-only in US theaters, like Celebration Day or the Quadrophenia documentary).

Pope Frank is the messenger of your doom (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 4 April 2013 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

excluding music docs does seem a bit like the elephant in the room. I'm not sure there's really a common thread between say the Decline of Western Civilization and Oklahoma!

Mordy, Thursday, 4 April 2013 19:58 (eleven years ago) link

I like the idea of throwing everything together, but I can see how it might be unwieldy.

Pope Frank is the messenger of your doom (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 4 April 2013 20:01 (eleven years ago) link

I'd like the inclusion of music docs myself though I can't really justify this except to say because it is a thing i would enjoy

tv & broadway seems more like a token inclusion than anything - i have no problem but are they really going to get that many votes anyway?

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 4 April 2013 20:01 (eleven years ago) link

the question that immediately came up for me was do ppl vote for particular versions? stuff like hair has multiple stagings, revivals, a movie, lots of stuff (like les miz) have all that plus multiple "live concert" type deals, etc.

Mordy, Thursday, 4 April 2013 20:02 (eleven years ago) link
