This Monday, early evening?

jon (jon), Thursday, 19 September 2002 10:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hmmm Monday, an untried day for FAP action. If it's central I can do it but not early.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

What Tom said, and I'll likely slink away before long because I am a sick man.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

i think so, i want to celebrate my new house (as i'm doing tonite, tomorrow night, and sunday night)

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Are you really allowing an unsteered FAP to go ahead??????

I'm not quite mentalist to come back from Manchester after less than 24 hours there.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well I'm well up for this. I'm meeting my new boss re 'please pay me off I don't want to work for you' that afternoon and will vcery ready for a pint in the evening. The prospect of an an e-blind date such as this (I'm an FAP virgin) will provide a nice silver lining to the day.

Later is fine, as long as I can get a train out of Paddington before the Wiltshire Curfew.

And I'll be on Regent St so anywhere West End would be great. If it were less than 10 minutes walk from the Bakerloo line it would maximise my drinking time. But I'm a fast walker.

jon (jon), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

great idea. i will be SINGING though, so no, probs not

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 19 September 2002 11:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hmm, well you know I frown upon such unsteered events but I might be able to squeeze a couple of beers in next Monday. I think the steering committee should pickj the pub though. But ho - something new?

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 19 September 2002 12:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

Steering Commttee? Steered/Unsteered?

There's more to this than I thought... it was just an e-whim, honest.

Well, whoever chooses make it nearish Bakerloo Line (Oxford Circus/Picc Circus) and I'll be there.

What happens next? Do the minutes of the meeting get minuted? Does someone review the minutes of the lsat meeting? Can I doodle while pretending to look intelligently interested?

jon (jon), Thursday, 19 September 2002 12:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

i caddot cob i'b afraid cos i've got dis terrible cold!

katie (katie), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

mmmm.... somewhere new...

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

The only pub I know round there is the place we all drink in at work. it's called the Windmill and is on a side road parrallel to Regent St on the W side.

But I'm happy to try somewwhere new (and may not be allowed to make suggestions...)

jon (jon), Thursday, 19 September 2002 13:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm on for this, but won't stay late unless there is a tube strike the next day, in which case I shall be taking that day off.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 September 2002 16:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ok everyone, who's going to fix a pub?

I won't have web access on Monday, and would hate to miss out, having made the suggestion.

jon (jon), Friday, 20 September 2002 07:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Never drinking again. My life is a RUIN this morning. I woke up in tights, dress and jacket with handbag still on arm. I feel sick, Never drinking again.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Any ideas anyone? Horse and Groom on Great Portland Street? I can't make any claims for its quality because I haven't been there since 1989. But fancyapint.com gives it one pint out of five so it can't be all bad...

http://www.fancyapint.com/thepubs/pub30.htm

I don't know why I'm suggesting Sam Smiths pubs when it doesn't matter to me because I'm tragically off the booze again. Sob.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

''I feel sick, Never drinking again.''

yes...sure you aren't. a pint of coke for you in future then.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

My termini are Notting Hill Gate and M.Arch so somewhere on the central line would be best for me.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

My life is a RUIN this morning.>

ditto, and its the braindance brockup tonite. oh, why do i do it?

gareth (gareth), Friday, 20 September 2002 09:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

Central Line and Bakerloo Line? Sounds like Oxford Circus:

Tim (Tim), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah i'm in

mark s (mark s), Friday, 20 September 2002 10:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

OK Mark why don't we make Monday our meet-up...especially as I think celebrations are in order heh :-) don't forget to bring the NLRs!

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 20 September 2002 11:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

OK Marcello good idea.

mark s (mark s), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

Tim's link says to me:

Ship is good, a little far

Dover Castle looks GREAT - is it hard to find?

Windmill is good too - I know it though, on the other hand you don't

Argyll Arms easy peasy to find and meet at, bar probably unreachable. No fun.

Someone plump for one? How do I recognise you good people?

jon (jon), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

ILXers are easy to spot, trust your senses.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

esp smell

mark s (mark s), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

I suspect the Dover Castle may be a little small for a FAP, but that's always my worry and it's never that much of a problem.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm off until Monday now, so I look forward to seeing the venue as chosen by t'Committee.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

sorry can't do it as I'm having time off (so the last thing to do would be to go to London, even if it is to mett you all). but from monday 30th I'm back so practically any weekday evening from then would be good.

anyway, have fun!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm off too - but Tim H has kindly emailed me a contact phone number so if I don't get to the web I can still find all of you.

jon (jon), Friday, 20 September 2002 14:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

I say the WIndmill. What does everyone else say?

Pete (Pete), Friday, 20 September 2002 14:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hic!

Sarah (starry), Friday, 20 September 2002 14:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

I say let's settle on one, and I'm perfectly happy with The Windmill. I'll be there pretty early, but as the link says it is patronised by office workers and I will be in a suit and tie, it might not be ideal for Jon to try to spot me. There is a pic on my profile here, though, if that helps.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 20 September 2002 17:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm reviving this so we don't lose it. Are we all okay with the Windmill?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 21 September 2002 18:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

fine by me. Pic noted. some say 'can't do early', some say 'cant do late'. I guess even 'early' in London is not very early - is 6/6.30ish a good place to start?

jon (jon), Sunday, 22 September 2002 07:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

Looks like I might be on for his now. Late-ish doors for me 7.30/8.00 ish. Looking forward to it!!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 22 September 2002 09:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'll be there around six, Jon.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 22 September 2002 11:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm possible a sevenish man. I have to introduce a screening of The Royal Tenebaums first. I shall be using the line "Mark S laughed non-stop and so di Dr Vick". Poor overseas students.

Pete (Pete), Sunday, 22 September 2002 12:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

I laughed lots too Pete, if you want to build a long list of people who liked it. And relatively new poster hereabouts Tim Bateman has a sister very like Margot! (Not adopted, however.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 22 September 2002 13:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 22 September 2002 22:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

I stand corrected. LArfed (what good thgis is going to do to the international students linguistic skillZor I know not but...)

Pete (Pete), Monday, 23 September 2002 08:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Boss is not in today so I can escape in time for the full revelry I hope.

And my meeting tomorrow has been cancelled so I can have a hangover without fear.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 23 September 2002 08:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

so, is it the windmill then? i have decided i can make it, so i shall be there sometimes around 8.05

gareth (gareth), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

that's where i'm going

mark s (mark s), Monday, 23 September 2002 14:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

A little after 7, I think.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 15:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I should get out of work by 6.30 so between then and 7 sometime - it's only 5 minutes away.

I feel chastened. The plan was to meet at Trafalgar Square and then find a pub, but since I'm being pressed...gosh I really can't think of one that has Sky! Any tips? I'm probably setting out about midday; the prospect of watching Spurs - WHUFC is quite enticing.

ENBB, if you make it into town on Tuesday I'd definitely be up for a reprise! As I suspect would a few others. I'd make sure a pub was set this time.

To repeat: this wasn't so much a FAP as me meeting Nick and wondering if anyone else fancied coming but it's true that I have been lax in the pub-revealing department.

I just look at our USA counterparts fapping like crazy and grow sad that we, inventors of the art, have lost it so comprehensively :(

I left the East Dulwich Tavern at half time of Utd-Arsenal last week because I couldn't hack all the melodramatic Gooners and cockney Reds massively overemphasising their masculine commitment to football, it was like watching people auditioning for a scene in a slightly point-missing film or some shit

Yup, that's the East Dulwich Tavern for you. Always a bit baffled by it: if you're so committed to the team, umm, why aren't you actually at the match? Wearing a replica shirt to watch a game in a pub is also unacceptable.

After an intensive nostalgia fest of reading 2002 - 2005 threads earlier this year, it was a weird feeling whenever I happened to visit any of the London pubs featured (eg Pineapple in Camden, the Clerk and Well, and various pubs in Fitzrovia) - and imagining the long-gone ghosts of previous FAPS.

If there’s a Blue Pollsts then I’d probably Newman Street, it’s a little quieter up there.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 13:57 (five years ago) link

I once went round every Blue Posts to see if anyone knew why they were called the Blue Posts and no one did outside of the usual spurious sounding and heavily caveated theories.

Pretty sure The Harp is surely just near St Martins-in-the-Fields is my favourite west end pub these days and if you can guarantee the upstairs room would be *perfect* for a FAP. downstairs is tight tho.

Fizzles, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 14:16 (five years ago) link

Fitzrovia side is a good call tho my aversion to Sam Smith’s pubs means it takes a few out at a swipe - the aforementioned Newman St Blue Posts, The Champion and The Fitzrovia itself.

Tho as several ilxors will attest this discrimination around pubs is for show only. i will drink anywhere.

Fizzles, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 14:19 (five years ago) link

xp I'd agree on both halves of that.

The Blue Posts myth is that they're basically taxi ranks for sedan chairs?

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 14:19 (five years ago) link

Because I'm not bright I have only just realised that sedan-carriers are what's being referred to in The Crown and Two Chairmen

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 14:20 (five years ago) link

yep, sedan chairs, postal collection points (indicated by blue posts), perimeter boundary of some sort. think there were a couple others.

my general rule on pub names unless they’re bleeding obvious is to assume we don’t know and inventive explanations are invariably rong.

Newman Street is the best of the Blue Posts (I believe there are four) but others in our party may have strong opinions about Sam Smiths. It would be pleasingly old-school though.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 17:40 (five years ago) link

I found ENBB's FAP thread!

Hope to make it.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 17:43 (five years ago) link

that blue posts on newman street is fine. spacious and quiet enough as you say.

Fizzles, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 17:51 (five years ago) link

MDC - In South London but am happy to meet at this Newman street location. Yay! Thank you for working that out. Wouldn’t have known where to suggest so this is great. What day would work best - 3rd, 4th or 5th? Again, I’m flexible so whatever is best for others.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 19 December 2018 18:59 (five years ago) link

If it's on the 3rd I can probably pop in as I'm working in London that day

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 21:28 (five years ago) link

I'm free all three days.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 21:36 (five years ago) link

Though I'll be in a pub on the 2nd, so slight preference for not the 3rd.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 21:37 (five years ago) link

Bah I somehow saw that before seeing CP's response - slight preference for the 3rd now.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 20 December 2018 15:48 (five years ago) link

Third works for me. Let’s see what others think I guess. Yay!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 20 December 2018 18:59 (five years ago) link

3rd is the one day I can't do but I organise the ILB FAP once a season so no worries - have a good time

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 09:23 (five years ago) link

Kings Arms is pleasant but tiny
Royal Oak not much larger – we are best used to it, despite change of management.
The George is v characterful but has not much bar for the number of customers it seats (bcz it has such an extensive outside area).
Lord Clyde: fond memories but haven't been there for years
Globe Tavern (in the market): enraging overcrowded visit last time I was there (to meet up w/Geeta) but it was amateur month so
Blue Eyed Maid: horrible sports and karaoke barn

There's another one near the Lord Clyde I think, with various dusty stuffed animals above the bar?

mark s, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 09:34 (five years ago) link

Also in the area: The Southwark Tavern, The Mudlark (under London Bridge), the Anchor (by the river near the Clink)

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 09:39 (five years ago) link

I had forgotten Amateur Month: http://freakytrigger.co.uk/pumpkin/2005/12/warning-pub-amateur-month-has-begun/

Though if I ever knew what a flyer was, I have forgotten that too.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 09:42 (five years ago) link

I was in the Bunch of Grapes the other day and there were seats, but it was later on like 8:30-9ish and on a Tuesday

I've been to the George a couple of times and yeah it was busy

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 09:48 (five years ago) link

a flyer is a swift solo pint i think? i may be wrong but the clue is in the context really

mark s, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 09:55 (five years ago) link

Might be able to come out for once. Make up for missing too many ilb faps.

Lord Clyde is an old favourite, but like mark s haven't been in a few years.
I cannot remember going to the The Glad(stone) even though it had a good rep. Is that the stuffed animals one?
The Roebuck, down Great Dover St, used to be alright.
All the in-market pubs tend to the enragingly overcrowded imo, but The Market Porter is surprisingly spacious and I quite like it as big, busy pubs go
Bunch of Grapes might be the pub I've most frequently passed without ever buying a drink in. It's become a sort of principle, not drinking there.
King's Arms off the High Street used to be reliably quiet, not so sure now - http://freakytrigger.co.uk/pumpkin/2009/11/the-ft-top-25-pubs-of-the-00s-25-the-kings-arms-borough/
Weird fondness for The Old King's Head but only remember being there when drinking to get properly drunk.
(quick shout for The Rose on Snowsfields, which used to be my local and favourite pub in the world, but is now just a nice, awkwardly shaped gastropub)

woof, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 10:10 (five years ago) link

I can't make it on Thursday but Borough in general is not a great place to do this at the start of a Bank Holiday weekend and the closer to the market you are the worse it will be.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 10:12 (five years ago) link

It was someone's request that we do it around there, right? I've never been to any of these so am leaving it up to you all to decide.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 10:15 (five years ago) link

I'm happy so many people seem to be able to come!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 10:15 (five years ago) link

MattDC - next time!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 16 April 2019 10:15 (five years ago) link

Yeah the SE1 thing was probably my fault and if anyone has brilliant ideas for better spots that won't be full and are convenient for people to drop in they should suggest them.

(The Lord Clyde is as good as ever but probably a bit small for these purposes; they do allow you to reserve tables in the back room I think but I am against such behaviours.)

(Yes a flyer is when you're on a round but the people you're drinking with are drinking at a sensible speed and you're in need of another when they're nowhere near so you get yourself a quick off-round drink while still remaining in the round.)

Tim, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:12 (five years ago) link

I've heard SE7 is nice

imago, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:14 (five years ago) link

In all seriousness though, Bermondsey is 1 stop from London Bridge and possesses numerous fine pubs and a clutch of nearby craft brewers to match

imago, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:15 (five years ago) link

bermondsey is a minor mare for me (req. bus and overground then underground plus walk if there's a walk) -- BUT happy to go with a majority tbh, esp if the mare also means we can all sit down and stretch out

mark s, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:21 (five years ago) link

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:51 (five years ago) link

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 11:54 (five years ago) link

slightly bigger if memory serves (caveat: years since i was there)

mark s, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 12:01 (five years ago) link

I thought I’d been there v recently so I searched my email and the occasion I was thinking of was pals visiting from DC in...April 2006(!).

But surely there was one other visit in the last 13 years.

I don’t get out much.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 12:13 (five years ago) link

Clyde marginally smaller than the Royal Oak I'd guess, but there's surely not much in it either way.

Tim, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 12:58 (five years ago) link

The Lord Clyde is often heaving in the early evenings but tends to empty out, my memory is it's marginally better for a largeish group than the Royal Oak or the King's Arms, both of which are fine pubs but awkward for groups bigger than four or five.

The Horseshoe Inn on the other side of the tracks towards Bermondsey St has a pretty big, open back room and lots of space for outdoor drinking, which is where most people will be if it's a nice day, which it looks like being.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 April 2019 13:10 (five years ago) link

Aye, work go out to there a far bit - and also to the Miller further along that street, which again might be alright if there's a lot of people outside.

If all goes according to plan I'll be there before 6 also.

(Also Tombot hooray we should have a pint or some pints, let us know where you're staying and whatnot and we can endlessly discuss where to drink and who's available.)

Tim, Thursday, 18 April 2019 09:16 (five years ago) link

And hopefully have come to some sort of decision by May 9th.

7:30 at best for me, given my work schedule. I will also have a stupid backpack w/work laptop in it, which is just ideal in a crowded pre-holiday pub scenario.

Likely in Sweden when Tombot is in the country - sorry to miss!

re tv actress catherine fuller visiting the east end

there ARE some slopes down towards the lea e.g. from upper clapton road, plus chatsworth road and homerton high street both have quite a gradient at some points (tho not built-up points and the architecture looks wrong plus that narrow pavement still looks very unlondony to me)

also did she really "make friends" wIth a toddler -- I THINK NOT

lol when i GS-ed streets with slopes in london's east end i found THIS:

https://www.eastlondonhistory.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/old-streets-of-london.jpg

from this site -- which has similar cellar-window arches but is not identified by name on the "east london history" website -- plus a subsequent tineye reverse search locates this street in BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS ffs.

The one with DJ Martian was in the BPNS so you'd need to have been north of Preston (possibly Carlisle) for Mono to be easier to get to.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 9 July 2019 21:23 (four years ago) link

smol (avg height, chubby tbh) bird (more hamster with a glare tbh) with a brogue (only when excited but even then its prob more of a squall) was on to enbb since to suggest that soho-ish might work as we're lunchin around there and moochin afterwards and we might as well be earlyish starting given a long day might mean bed calls us sooner than eg fizzles might have made you to expect

phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Tuesday, 9 July 2019 22:22 (four years ago) link

How much time do you want to spend mooching around Soho? If you're lunching late (or shopping) it should be fine but otherwise that's a lot of time in a relatively small area.

London will have emptied out a bit by then but even then Soho on a Friday can be on the hectic side. There's always hardy ILX perennials the Glasshouse Stores or the Blue Posts Newman Street but only if neither of you particularly mind about drinking decent beer and certainly not if you're drinking wine.

More generally anywhere reasonably central on the Jubilee Line should be pretty easy for you.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 10 July 2019 08:04 (four years ago) link

I'll revive this late August and see if people are up for that.

Autumnal FAP? Where is HH? Could do it there I suppose.

Yes even I could make it to Herne Hill.

the pinefox, Monday, 23 September 2019 09:10 (four years ago) link

There are worse things. Being chained to a Ken Loach boxset, for instance.

I don't think I've ever visited the People's Republic of Herne Hill tbh.

PRHH has an excellent West Indian take away right by the station, so post-drink fuel needs are v well catered for.

coup de twat (suzy), Monday, 23 September 2019 09:19 (four years ago) link

Half-moon or Commercial for options. There are a couple more but those are best.

ENBB - HH station is 10 mins by train from Victoria or 15 min walk from Brixton tube. The pubs are by HH station.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 23 September 2019 10:51 (four years ago) link

Man alive, I loved the Commercial in the mid/late 80s, so much so I have trouble drinking in there these days (not so much trouble that I refuse to drink in there, just enough that I go on endlessly about how much I liked it in the old days.

Tim, Monday, 23 September 2019 11:03 (four years ago) link

When do you all want to do this. I can do mid-next week. More flexible after that

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 09:07 (four years ago) link

I will do this if possible. ENBB, are you going to bring PWB?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 10:30 (four years ago) link

I could make a crafty mid-next-week, after which I'm out of action until late October (don't let that stop you).

this is excellent - thanks Tim.

Fizzles, Monday, 7 October 2019 07:10 (four years ago) link

That book sounds quite worth looking at!

Fizzles, if I mentioned Belly it was because they were playing 'Feed The Tree'.

the pinefox, Monday, 7 October 2019 10:04 (four years ago) link

Ah, yes, that's what they were playing the other night as well.

Eley Williams has enormous fun with the sound and look of language, and the heft of words and their relation to perception and memory. Normally I'm a little wary of the poeticisation of prose, but I don't think that's what's happening here. It reminds me more of Robert Louis Stevenson's approach to sentence construction, where he recommends an awareness of the patterns of sound across sentences. Love and loss are specifically realised through this prism of language and thought, which makes their representation more elliptical than more conventional representations of those emotions, but more pointed, more tender, with a bursting sense of things felt but not directly expressed so that, to quote Isaac Rosenberg, they are 'understandable but still ungraspable'.
