The Ryder Cup

yes, it's me asking another sport question!

So, as a doley scrounger (and getting ver ver fed up of it) suddenly it has a bright spot, tomorrow I can sit in front of the TV and watch the ebb and flow of the Ryder cup, the only golf I can truly sit and watch all day (other times I have to switch it on for ten minutes or so and then flick around other channels). It promises to be marvellous, a veritable dream team of US stars versus plucky Europeans, including my current favourite golfer Sergio Garcia.

Will you be watching? who will win?

chris (chris), Thursday, 26 September 2002 08:48 (twenty-three years ago)

US on paper look to have a far far far better team, the tetchiness has already begun with Garcia telling the US players to "chill out" after they complained about slow play. It's time to wheel out the old cliche, the US have a better team, but do the likes of Woods really have the character which matchplay requires????? I hope Padraig Harrington does well, it might inspire him to actually win a tournament instead of finishing second again and again and again and again.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 26 September 2002 09:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Harrington does seem pretty cool, the European team seem soooo laid back.

Sky have been trailing the whole thing so much though, daily updates on practice etc, yet all I can do is stare back at Butch's wonky eye.

chris (chris), Thursday, 26 September 2002 09:36 (twenty-three years ago)

what's great abt this competition is that while the americans haf the bettah team it is not known whether they will play together as one (which is what ronan is getting at i suppose).

remember last time the europeans were ahead after two days but the americans won the singles.

The only thing is the europeans seem to be weaker but they do have a chance.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 26 September 2002 10:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I will watch golf on television no matter what.

Question for our friends in the Emerald Isles: I was watching Woods victory in Ireland on television here in the States and was wondering if it was broadcast live here, I mean it must have been 10pm in Ireland when the match finished up. What time does it get dark over there? (yes, rub question but I'm fascinated by dusk).

lawrence kansas, Thursday, 26 September 2002 13:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I won't be watching, but I'll be watching it in spirit. My heart swells with pride whenever there's a major sporting event in the Midlands.

Has anyone ever been to the disco at the Belfry? Fucking fantastic, you can go outside and everything.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 26 September 2002 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh that was the scene of the most scandalous event ever at my old office Mr Miller. The strange Scottish bloke who worked in our office had had an argument with his girlfriend and passed out on the dancefloor smacking his head in the process on said dancefloor. Later he tried to pick a fight with a night porter, threw up and did god knows what in his bed and never turned up for the sales conference, how he wasn't sacked I'll never know.

I was a good boy, played snooker til three, turned up for the meeting then went round the three hole course in a very large score.

I see Tiger Woods has started being narky already!

Search: Olazabal dancing, Nicklaus and Jacklin in 1970 (? I think it was then), Seve and Olazabal playing together.

Destroy: Corey fucking Pavin.

chris (chris), Thursday, 26 September 2002 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I only wish I had a pooter in front of the telly so I could commentate on it on here, that would be ace, I know everyone would love it.

chris (chris), Thursday, 26 September 2002 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I would love it. But you know that.

Search: Seve laying into his caddy after plopping one in the water. I don't know if it was the Ryder Cup or not, but Search anyway.

I used to live in Olazabal's home town. I saw him receive the keys to the city or something like that. He wore his green jacket. It was very exciting.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 26 September 2002 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Search: Tom Kite's momumental grumpiness when interviewed by Steve Rider (!) in '89 just as Europe secured their 14th point... "we haven't lost yet", he upbraided Stevie R... he was actually right, the US nicking a tie (but failing to regain the Cup). Sam's tears, obv. Payne Stewart's concession to Monty amid the chaos in '99.

Jacko and Nicko - '69 (gotta be an odd-numbered year)?

I fear a return to the old pre-'83 days this year - a big win for the US, none of this down-to-the-last-coupla singles business.

I shall be following this on the Web and by mobile phone. Hmmph.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 26 September 2002 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and destroy: Langer's putt in '91. Rocca's collapse over the last four holes in '93. Azinger's Desert Storm cap at Kiawah.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 27 September 2002 05:51 (twenty-three years ago)

well, so far....

Darren Clarke got off to an absolute flyer, some beautiful shots played to get three birdies in the first three holes. His game with Bjorn against Tiger (started slow, now good and boring) and Azinger (fitful).

David Toms is playing well, as is Lee Westwood, a welcome return to form for him.

Does anyone know what the "ill-considered" comments that Scott Hoch has come out with in the past that the Sky people can't stop harping on about. He has a very cruel face.

Sky's coverage is very very comprehensive, especially the interactive stuff.

chris (chris), Friday, 27 September 2002 08:34 (twenty-three years ago)

that should be Clarkey's game is the one to watch, lovely stuff, the lead changing hands a few times already.

chris (chris), Friday, 27 September 2002 08:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Eurpoe up in three! I'm amazed at this. Monty seems to be on fire, he was in a very good mood earlier, laughing and joking his way down the fairway. The American comentator was incredulous. Him and Langer are getting some big love from the crowds though.

chris (chris), Friday, 27 September 2002 09:49 (twenty-three years ago)

why the surprise, chris? europe always creams the us in the foursomes/fourballs.

has anyone commented on europe's beige cardigans yet? god, whose idea was THAT?

Jeff W (Jeff W), Friday, 27 September 2002 09:56 (twenty-three years ago)

they're not in Beige now they're playing in red today. I quite liked the beige and brown outfits though.

Why are some of the Americans wearing white shirts and some blue (azinger and at least one other?)

We do usually do well yes, but we're doing much better than I anticipated.

Woods looks like he's playing on his own rather than as a team, in fact I never saw him say a word to Azinger. Now Clarke and Bjorn are Dormy two. Radio 5 are suggesting that Tiger won't be appearing in the foursomes this avo.

chris (chris), Friday, 27 September 2002 10:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What I know about golf you could write out five times on the back of a 5 iron. How do the 'team' parts of this event work?

Tim (Tim), Friday, 27 September 2002 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

all the best jobs are found on the couch with a remote control and sky box. good luck job hunting.

Kiwi, Friday, 27 September 2002 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

there's your fourball better ball aspect of it like right now, where both players from each team play a ball each. Strategy comes in here where one can play conservatively while the other can go for it.

The other (I may be wrong here) is where all four tee off, but then they take shots in turns from the drive they prefer.

This is repeated tomorrow with singles on Sunday, where every team member plays.

and cheers for the job luck, may have an interview on Thursday!!

chris (chris), Friday, 27 September 2002 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

monty and Langer four up, four to play!!

chris (chris), Friday, 27 September 2002 10:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris, you are quicker than the official site!

Richard Jones (scarne), Friday, 27 September 2002 10:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Bloody hell, that last hole in Bjorn/Clarke v Woods/Azinger took an age to come up on the BBC site - I managed to get two whole chapters of this here manual edited. What happened? I'm envisaging some kind of crazy lost ball fuss. 2-0 to Europe, likely to become 3-0 in next few minutes.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 27 September 2002 10:36 (twenty-three years ago)

All-square in the first two afternoon matches. I keep having to tip-toe to the toilet so as not to upset the Belfry balance. My breathing is thin and irregular. The BBC's wee desktop score thingy seems to work OK.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 27 September 2002 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

All-square in the first three afternoon matches!!!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 27 September 2002 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)

why do ppl go and watch golf live?

mark s (mark s), Friday, 27 September 2002 12:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Verplank is the greatest surname on Earth.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 27 September 2002 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Better than Azinger and Furyk?

Richard Jones (scarne), Friday, 27 September 2002 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Monty and Langer one up!!!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 27 September 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Bah! Tiger pulls ahead :-(

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 27 September 2002 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Tiger deserves chipmunks to bite his feet, after his cretinous attitude towards the Augusta controv.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 27 September 2002 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

All square after one hole in the final game of the afternoon too. Blimey.

I can only assume that people go and watch golf live because they don't know how exciting it is via the BBC website.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 27 September 2002 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Clarke and Bjorn one-up after 8 holes. It's really hotting up now.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 27 September 2002 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

The other (I may be wrong here) is where all four tee off, but then they take shots in turns from the drive they prefer.

Nah - foursomes is where each team only has a single ball, and the partners play alternate strokes. E.g. Garcia tees off, Westwood plays the approach, Garcia putts... next hole, Westwood tees off.

What you describe *is*, I think, a legit variation on foursomes, but I can't remember what it's called.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 27 September 2002 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Westwood plays the approach, Garcia putts...
or more accurately in this example, Garcia has a tricky bunker shot ;-)

Jeff W, Friday, 27 September 2002 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Daz Clarke and Bjorn now two up.

This foursomes business could lead to some terrible quarrels, couldn't it?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 27 September 2002 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

MOnty and Langer now two up. Could someone take over feigning excitement please? I'm knackered.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 27 September 2002 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

U.S. take the first afternoon foursome.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 27 September 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

...but Europe takes the second. Looks like it will be 5-3 to Europe overnight.

zebedee, Friday, 27 September 2002 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

and now, start of Sunday, It's 8 all after a good solid comeback from the Yanks. Woods finally started winning things, and Garcia and Westwood were finally beaten. It's all down to the Singles and Torrance has taken a bit of a risk and put all his best players on early, Strange, the other way round, Could be interesting. I'll be listening on the radio all day as I'm not at home!!

chris (chris), Sunday, 29 September 2002 09:44 (twenty-three years ago)

and what happened last night with Garcia when he lost it? any eye witness accounts?

chris (chris), Sunday, 29 September 2002 09:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Only an ear-witness account from the radio, Chris. He chucked his ball in the lake and 'waved his arms around a bit'. Listening to R5 on the bus to Victoria was pretty excruciating - practically everything that could go wrong for Europe seemed to happen in that half-hour.

As close as the last nine Ryder Cups have been, I think I'm right in saying that the Americans have comprehensively won the Sunday singles six, maybe seven times. At the mo', Europe are up in five, down in one (Westwood getting stuffed by Verplank) and level in two of the eight underway - which is what you'd expect given the top-heavy nature of Torrance's selection. And the US have been fantastic on the back-nine the last two days, so all of these leads may be eroded.

I'm pessimistic. 15-13 to the US I reckon.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 29 September 2002 11:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm pessimistic too: last time europe was up by four and we lost. we needed to have a lead by two by the end of the foursomes. we'll prob lose.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 29 September 2002 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

we won the Ryder Cup who hooo!!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 29 September 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

great performance...never thought we'd kick the americans in the singles but there we are. sport surprises once again.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 29 September 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

How many countries did it take to beat the USA? I don't think it's much to be proud of.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 September 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

YYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is from me, Vicky, MarkC, Madchen and Cookie!!

and Dastoor, piss off you lanky streak of piss

chris (chris), Sunday, 29 September 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, it is golf.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 September 2002 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

great weekend. we win the ryder cup. also arsenal won (my team) and villa lost (my brother's) to sunderland. great weekend!!!!

yeah and piss off N!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 29 September 2002 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally C says:

"Also N. is a cunt"

chris (chris), Sunday, 29 September 2002 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I shall piss off now.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 September 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Also Mark C says it too

chris (chris), Sunday, 29 September 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Come back N. we love you.

or can't find another easy target.

chris (chris), Sunday, 29 September 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

haha it was classic, Paul McGinley jumping in the lake, magnificent. Golf as Sunday chill out tv, even better.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 29 September 2002 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

N, the USA was loads of different countries once, there was New England, Louisiana, New Mexico, Mason-Dixie, Pringles and the Wild West. So up yours, N. This heralds the start of Europe's march to superpower status.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Sunday, 29 September 2002 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I suppose the switch to Eur v US (from GB & [N?]I v US) in '79 was something to do with the emergence of the European Tour (which may've been established for decades, I dunno), so I've always seen it as a match-up between the two golf circuits as much as anything else.

So Sunday was a bit like the Vauxhall Conference All-Stars whipping some Premiership Select XI 5-2, with Thierry Henry missing a consolation penalty right at the end.

It was glorious stuff (teletext, R5, soundless Sky Sports in a W12 pub), and very nice to see Chris late in the evening; having spent all day with either Americans, the uninterested or a combination of the two it was nice to celebrate with someone who actually gave a damn. I feel bad for giving contact stress to Pam & Gail (who didn't need it) with my fidgeting during 40 receptionless minutes on the Tube. Emerged from the Central Line to discover Garcia was blowing it again, and feared the worst...

The Guardian misreported McGinley's comments this morning though - he was talking about getting Sam Torrance in tears, not the American team. Big difference.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 30 September 2002 09:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought the switch to Eur vs. US was something to do with GB always losing.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 30 September 2002 09:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, yeah - that too.

If it were truly a Battle of the Tours, the likes of Greg Norman, Vijay Singh, Vicente Fernandez, Nick Price and Gary Player would've been in the US team over the years. And maybe some of the Japanese chaps could've turned out for either side.

I'm not saying this would be better or anything.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 30 September 2002 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I fear N is correct. Perhaps the Home Internationals could come back as England versus The Others.

N, I'm sorry for saying "up yours" to you. I don't suppose you minded, but still.

PJ MIller (PJ Miller), Monday, 30 September 2002 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

On balance I preferred it to 'piss off'.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 30 September 2002 10:14 (twenty-three years ago)

England vs The Others? Isn't this a battle N. was personally involved in?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 30 September 2002 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

We're not dead.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 30 September 2002 10:17 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah,sorry N. we were a bit tipsy.

But watchingthe highlights from yesterday in a slight fever today was fantastic. Sam Torrance is so passionate about itall it brought a lump to my throat.

chris (chris), Monday, 30 September 2002 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

He looks a bit like Saddam Hussein when he gets really into it.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 30 September 2002 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I know - I thought the pictures on the front of the tabloids *were* of Saddam Hussain.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 08:16 (twenty-three years ago)

a tidal wave is coming.

Ich habe der Ryder Cup Fever.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

What do the shirts look like this year?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, I'd forgotten this thread. Once again, pessimistic. 15.5-12.5 to the U of S of A.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 16 September 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

14.5 to 13.5 nail biter to Europe. Somehow Chris Riley is involved.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 16 September 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Miguel Angel Jimenez could beat the "Guess Your Age" person at every county fair on the planet. He doesn't look a day under 50. During the 1999 cup, he was onscreen just as my wife came in. I said "guess that guy's age." She said, "47, 48?" (He was 35.) Sorry dude, the ponytail doesn't help.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 16 September 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

There is some kind of rolling bet thing going on at Ladbrokes, but I don't understand it. I hope Markelby will explain it to us later (I think he is at the airport or something).

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I have tomorrow off and it's going to be nothing but Ryder Cup for me.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

1 hour in: EUROSTOMPAGE.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 17 September 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Cor!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

2 hours in: AMERICAGEDDON.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Rinky-Dink will grab the States' only point this morning; have any of the Yank pairings had the lead at any point?

Clarky Cat and Jimmy The Nezz five up with seven to play. Nice.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

This is bad. Bring me Hal Sutton's head on a pike.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 17 September 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

2-0 to Eur and Westwood Ho/Serge are dormie-5. Other match still in the balance.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 17 September 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

My mouth is opening and closing, but no sound is coming out.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 17 September 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Eur: 31/2
USA: 1/2

cºzen (Cozen), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"Welcome to your putting lesson, Yanks, prepare to be schooled."

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 17 September 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

This is all very familiar, isn't it? Substantial first day lead for EU, whittled away on day two, great waves of seasick hysteria in the singles on day three. Still, NO lead after day one and it would be all over.

In the afternoon foursomes, after a good start by the Unis, the Eups now lead in three (Monty's in no Funk), well behind in the other. Potentially 6.5-1.5, which is, er, kinda amazin' actually.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 17 September 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Europe 6.5
USA 1.5

Time for Sutton to send the comedians home and get out a hoe handle.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 17 September 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 17 September 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

this is like crack to me.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

So much for Mickelson/Tiger.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 18 September 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd have been happier with 8-0; it's early days and there's no more than a hole separating any of them, but the US are ahead in three of the morning fourballs today.

Why is it that this competition puts me through the wringer more than any other sporting occasion save for a latter-round GS match featuring a tennis player I hate or an Everton FC fixture? Worse than the World Cup.

I mean, it's golf.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 18 September 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

It's because you recognise it for what it is - an allegory of post- war Euro-American relations, and your own marriage.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 18 September 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael, possibly because it's one of the few events that Americans actually pay attention to where there's a chance they might get beaten? Watching Wales stick seventy points past the US Eagles doesn't have quite the same level of satisfaction.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 18 September 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba is so very wise. Matt also. See: Olympic basketball.

I think it might have something to do with Sam Torrance blubbing like a big moustachioed baby in '85.

Anyways, Rile The Tiger have doubled their advantage, as have CinkLove. No one's going to be quite so cocky with 7-5, are they?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 18 September 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Interesting subplot: Sutton saying, "They're playing tight and there's no energy. They can't see it because they're out there playing, but I can see it because I'm not involved. And they better listen to me when I tell 'em.

Then Johnny Miller came on and said (paraphrased), "I've been saying that for years, ever since I switched from playing to broadcasting, and I've gotten worlds of shit for it."

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 18 September 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

sutton fixin' to win some today.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think the europeans get at all cocky, even with a huge advantage there's still the slight expectation of defeat. Hence your (and my) anxiety.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 18 September 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the highlights last night and it was all about the putting. Monty and co couldn't miss, Furyk (was it? I can't remember) caught the lip so many times, erm, someone else finish the joke.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 18 September 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

the 13th is just spoiling for a hole-in-one. if I were a betting man...

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Casey/Howell have lost their lead and are now behind. Oh, this is rotten.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 18 September 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I love sergio's cocquettish ebullience.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba's post above has just stunned me, in a way.

the bellefox, Saturday, 18 September 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the Ryder Cup designed for Steve Rider?

I have never been great at knowing whether it's Steve Rider, or Steve Ryder!

I think it's 'Rider'.

the bellefox, Saturday, 18 September 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

howell pots at the 17th to level the match going down the hardest hole in championship golf.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

montgomerie turns in shades of david brent in his post-drubbing interview.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Bizarre box accompanying a feature on Colin Montgomerie in last week's Sunday Herald:

PERFECT PARTNERS

Following his split from Eimear earlier this year, Colin Montgomerie will be travelling alone to the Ryder Cup. We run the rule over some candidates for the wifely duties.

Name: Michelle Wie
Assessment: The two lovebirds would have lots to talk about. Then again, she often hits the ball longer and straighter than Monty, which could be a source of tension. At 14, she may also be a tad young (except in Arkansas).

Name: Jordan
Assessment: Technologically advanced author who offers much more than a shoulder to cry on if things go wrong. Might draw attention away from Monty's own chest, often an object of derision in America. However, he values loyalty and discretion - which are not, as we know, her two greatest assets.

Name: Kelly Holmes
Assessment: The golden girl of British athletics could offer some imaginative grooming tips for Monty's famously unruly quiff. Achieved success after years of near-misses, so could be an inspiring sidekick. Unfortunately occupied with cashing in on her Olympic success at the moment.

Name: Daniella Nardini
Assessment: Nardini was raised in Largs, just up the Clyde coast from Monty's Troon home. A famously feisty character actress who would stand by her man through thick and thin, any US fan giving him grief would soon be looking for a surgeon to extract a nine-iron from his forehead.

Name: Dale Reid
Assessment: A fellow Scot, Reid led Europe to Solheim Cup glory four years ago, so she knows the stresses and strains of the job. At 45, she is four years older than Monty, but age is just a number when you have a match made in heaven on your hands.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 18 September 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"... he has a marvellously manufactured swing but when it's nuts and bolts begin to loosen..."

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 18 September 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I have I told you my story about meeting Daniela Nardini on a train from Preston to Manchester? She had her script (for some telly thing with that chap that looks like Sam Neill but isn't...er, Michael Kitchen?) in a buff manilla folder with 'SCRIPT' written on it in geometrically precise handwriting. She was very nice. We talked about Chris Evans. I don't remember why.

Anyway, 11-5=good, 14-2=wouldabin better. Looking at the draw for the singles, Europe might not pick up anything until match 5. Wasn't it 11-5 overnight in Valderrama in '97 when EU squeaked home by a point? And 10-6 in '99 when we lost?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked it very much when El Niño putted in the completely wrong direction and it went in anyway.

Bizarre, isn't it, how much I want Europe to win. It is an allegory of my marriage too, I think.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Sunday, 19 September 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

yes it was 10-6 in '99 but just seeing the body language from the americans last night and sergio's awesome-ness makes me think this won't take long - esp if tiger loses that opening match.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 19 September 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the only point of watching today will be to see if Chris DeMarco punches out Jim Furyk for being a cold analytical Vulcan. "Dammit Jim, you're an American, not a brain surgeon!"

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 19 September 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

This is actually slightly worse than even I had feared - the lead is effectively down to two, I've given up on Howell, Casey and Donald already; the top-heavy selection by Sutton is emphatically paying off (and I can't see an obvious point in the EU's lower selections either).

Jimenez and Poulter have lead early leads slip but the worst offender is Westwood, who was my only banker in the first five matches and has seen 1Up go to 2Down horribly quickly.

We now need dazzling back nines from Clarke and Garcia and Monty to stay solid. Right down to the wire AGAIN. Christ.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

exciting though, innit.

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 19 September 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, good grief, now the BBC are reporting Harrington lost the first hole to Haas when previously he was apparently the only EU player other than Monty ahead. We're playing for the TIE now.

Exciting? Excruciating.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, the web and analogue teletext ain't doing it for me - it's over to the hushed tones of Pougatch and friends with their muffled mics around Oakland Hills on Five Live. Remember when this was on regular telly?

Score flash: Garcia now a/s with Mickleson. (Muted whoo-hoo).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone's now played at least one hole:

US up in six, EU up in two (God bless Paul McGinley), four are all-square. If it stays as it is, that's 15-13 to Europe. But it won't stay as it is. Oh, dearie me, no.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Levet goes ahead, Harrington levels. That's better. I must now yield my seat at the PC to someone with Proper Stuff to do. I hope I don't return to a Eurowake.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Does this finish today? Will I be able to go to a pub in St Andrews without golf being on the TV?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 19 September 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, it finishes today (it can't finish quick enough for me either, in a way). I can't answer your second question. There may be re-runs.

Wow - EU now up in five, down in five, level in two. Levet and McGinley have doubled their leads, Garcia has turned it around with three straight birdies vs Mickleson. Woods holes an eagle to virtually finish off Casey and Fistks of Furyk is about a million ahead vs Howell.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Europe up in six! Winning the singles after having a big overnight lead - it can't happen, can it?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Europe were briefly ahead in a head-spinning seven singles matches but DiMarco has just pinched the 9th from Jiminez.

The fact that many of the matches in which Europe are doing well have so long to go worries me a fair bit. Garcia going two up is crucial, a half from Clarke would settle the nerves.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

In the red corner: Woods is dormie-3, Furyk and Campbell 4Up and Monty's lead is halved. Love goes two up.

In the blue corner: Westwood levels against Perry and Garcia two up with four to play. Ahead in matches eight thru twelve but only one has reached the turn and there's HOURS to go.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Woods wins 3&2 - it's EU 11-6 US.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Westwood goes in front (at last!), Garcia is two up with three to play. Levet and McGinley are winning every other hole in the bottom matches. Furyk dormie-5.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Furyk wins 6&4 - EU 11-7 US.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Monty's lost his lead altogether. I foresee a cauldron of noise on the back nine and the Euro minnows (Levet, Poulter and McG ranked 43, 60 and 67 respectively) wilt.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Garcia posied (I originally typed posied) - and wins 3&2. EU 12-7 US. Monty regains his lead after Toms blows a short birdie putt at #13.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha! I DID type posied. Note to self: never try to recreate a spontaneous weak joke in a repost after losing your WWW connection.

Harrington (Europe's only top tenner?) now three up on Haas. It's looking good. My blood pressure is returning to normal.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

some of the putting this weekend has been just beautiful.

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 19 September 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Clarke now only one down to Love. What was Langer's outrageous boast that Europe could win two of the top three matches? At 7pm it looked SO bleak, but now the sun is cracking the flags.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Clarke holes a monster and they go down the last all-square. Jimenez loses his lead...but does it matter?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

davis love perhaps remembering 8 years ago on the 17th tee of oakland hills, leading the US open and requiring only two pars to take it. the result then: two bogeys and a loss. clarke's wonderful chip to drive home the point just needs to be seen.

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 19 September 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael, you do realize it's all over but the crying and the pointing, don't you? EUROSTOMPAGE.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 19 September 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

levet & funk high five as both almost score a hole-in-one. levet remains one-up.

cºzen (Cozen), Sunday, 19 September 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Clarke and Love miss tiddlers on a dramatic last to halve: EU 12.5-7.5 US. It could be Monty's to win - but he's no longer ahead. Some of the later leads are being whittled away. Where's the paracetamol?

(I don't believe it's all over, Rock. Those last four matches could easily turn around.)

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

DiMarco now leads Jimenez; Perry holds his nerve to send his match with Westwood up the last. Campbell about to nail another point for the Reds.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Campbell wins 5&3 - EU 12.5-8.5 US (but 13-9 at least with Westwood taking a lead to #18). Monty holes from 12 feet to regain a slender advantage. The last four stay static.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

'Gomerie & Toms halve the 17th - Europe now guaranteed 13.5pts.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

RETAINED.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Westwood beats Perry by one hole, Monty can't do worse than a half - if he matches Toms at the last he gets the glory of the outright win.

Could be another 4.5pts behind. OK, start the crying and pointing.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I think all the U.S. crying and pointing should be at mirrors. It'll be interesting to see if Chris Riley is made to be a goat; I'm glad the margin will be big enough that his opt-out request isn't really germane.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 19 September 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

WON.

Monty wins 1Up vs Toms and it's 14.5-8.5.

It could be 19-9 before it's over. I make that six wins each since '79. 2006: The Tiebreaker.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

If Montgomerie never has a top-10 in the next two years, I would still put him on the Euro team as a captain's pick.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 19 September 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a suggestion it was Ian Poulter wot won it - he went dormie-3 over Riley at approximately the same time as Big Col rolled that last putt home. Can someone with, like, a television, like, showing the golf corroborate? Teletext is miles behind regarding matches nine thru twelve - they must be on the piss.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Poulter beats Riley 3&2 - his place as the answer to a "No it frickin' wasn't!" Trivial Pursuit question is assured. DiMarco beats Jimenez at the last. EU 15.5-9.5 US. Levet assured of at least a half, Harrington and McGinley comfortably ahead.

What was I worrying about? The fact that Europe were up in one and down in seven about two and a half hours ago now just has the faint afterimage of panic, like the memory of the five minutes you spent frantically looking for your passport at the airport from the warm glow of a minibar vodka in Lodz.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Levet wins: 16.5-9.5. I don't really like the half-points; couldn't they do one for a draw, two for a win or something? 33-19 sounds a bit too rugby, though.

Anyway, I don't know why I'm continuing with this. I should've made dinner or something. I'm overcompensating for the US Open thread.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 19 September 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope my boy Lumpy makes the team in '06.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 19 September 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Garcia delivered. Glad montgomerie was the one to finish it off.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 19 September 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sad I didn't get to see any of this. I was thinking about the relative populations minus countries in Europe who don't really play golf. I'm not sure what the result is.

Ally C (Ally C), Sunday, 19 September 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

This was very good on the radio. For me the surge of pleasure at RETENTION eclipsed the joy of WINNING. I love Sergio Garcia and want to have his babies.

Michael, you were really suffering.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 20 September 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Not so steady for once...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 20 September 2004 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

More Jittery Jim.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 20 September 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Jittery Jones.

Strachan and Chiles were full of admiration.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 20 September 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm only really Steady in public. At home (and, increasingly, at work) I'm a-fluster. Good job I can retire to my isobaric chamber with a family bag of Revels at regular intervals.

Monty's a strange fellow, isn't he? The rudderless post-coital interview with him and Langer at the tail-end of the Beeb's highlights last night was deeply odd. I think Levet fulfils the team's zany quotient (maybe exceeds it slightly).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 20 September 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe Levet wz just letting all the frustrations out - its tough competing in front of that crowd...maybe. Some of the interviews were odd, but also some of the questions...like when lee westwood wz asked whether he enjoyed a win or the loss more since he you know, experienced both? er...

I liked langer's face when Monty wz giving that interview.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 20 September 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yesterday was grim with the Sutton led US team getting pummeled and my beloved Cleveland Browns losing to the Dallas Cowboys. Texas, so much to answer for.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

that 'interview' betw. monty and langer was so odd. I was in stitches laughing, uncomfortable.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 20 September 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
My goodness, no Ryder Cup thread this year?

I guess it was never in doubt - 10-6 to Europe overnight, they were up in seven or eight singles very quickly; Monty & Casey picked up early points, Clarke & Stenson went dormie and Howell's win effectively sealed the retention. Donald & Stenson, within seconds of each other, made sure of the outright win.

Now Clarke's won - to be embraced by US captain Lehman (who led the memorial service for Clarke's wife a few weeks back). Emotional stuff.

It's now 16-8 (looking like 18.5-9.5, just like the 2004 rout I was so needlessly worried about upthread).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 24 September 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

Sounds like a streaker just cost Europe a half-point! McGinley pretty much obliged to concede Henry's birdie putt on the 18th after a naked man ran across the green and jumped in the river. Halved the match. They'll never have it in Ireland again...

Seeing as Europe are sort of dominating this event now, maybe they should expand the US team selection. US & Canada? US & Mexico?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 24 September 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure the Americans wouldn't want to admit they're not good enough by themselves and admit other countries.
Wasn't there talk of allowing USA & Australia years ago put down for the same reason?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 24 September 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

I was only joking, really. USA v Europe is fine, makes sense in relation to the two main tours, etc.

With this victory though, there is a growing sense that the best 12 Europeans are actually better than the 12 best Americans; every European win in the past (and they've never been favourites until this year) has been put down to greater team spirit, etc. I'm not sure how the cumulative work rankings compare (the US have the top three, obviously).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 24 September 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

lol @ US, can't produce team players. All we have left is the gridiron, sob sob.

The Bearnaise-Stain Bears (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 24 September 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

Well done to woosie. He got a lot of stick beforehand.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 24 September 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

What a beating. Jeez. Back to the drawing board for the US.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 24 September 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

Something has to be done about Woosie's dreary voice though. For a man supposedly on a high from winning one of the biggest prizes in his sport, he sounded like to was talking about what glue to buy with the assistant at B and Q. And that's without even mentioning his accent.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Monday, 25 September 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

Well, that's OK, cos in 2008 it'll be the slightly excitable and occasionally unhinged Nick Faldo. But Europe will probably lose that one.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 25 September 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

I enjoyed that.

Funny, the team spirit thing. As in funny peculiar.

It is nice to see sportsmanship. Or hear, in this case.

This has been the best intl. team-golf Sunday in my memory. Seems like usually the Sunday nerves are so amped up that the play is sort of shaky until somebody drops a 60-ft bomb, which is all anybody remembers from that year. This year, almost everybody's playing out of their mind. I think the USA should consider leaving Tiger off every year to help their team's nerves. Holmes, Kim and Boo all played like "Expectations? What expectations? Watch this fuckin' shot, lol."

Radiant Flowering Crab (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 21 September 2008 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

Michael Jones, Sunday, 21 September 2008 21:22 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I was gonna say, if the end result of all this is the papers loading up the beatdown van and riding it up and down Faldo, then I think it's a result we can all approve of.

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Sunday, 21 September 2008 21:22 (seventeen years ago)

Seconded, thirded, whatevs, on the defeating of Faldo making this bearable. I was vaguely bordering on ridiculous optimism when USA USA USA went through that wee spell of being shite at putting, but it didn't last. Ah well.

ailsa, Sunday, 21 September 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

Would be a shame to blame Faldo, as much as I used to hate the guy.

Europeans just played badly. If Padraig is the Euro tiger then his play in the Ryder Cup fits that, solo player who can't perform in such an event. Seemed on the cards Europe would lose when they were such hot favourites.

Local Garda, Monday, 22 September 2008 03:32 (seventeen years ago)

British people are mad at Faldo:

Nice job leaving Paul Casey off the team, Monty.

based on that gaffe, the good guys have an early advantage!

Zeppelin to Howlin Wolf: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

haha...think a putter of casey's calibre is always good in the side, but on the flipside europe haven't had a team of players like this in years. which by recent standards prob means they'll lose...

went to my mate's at 9am to watch this, bloody rain.

not enough played to call anything yet, tho the european guys need to get their putter going. and harrington is looking like a mistake.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 1 October 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)

harrington's always struggled in ryder cup, iirc?

haven't seen more than two mins of this, hopefully there's a good highlights package tonight

i dont love everything, i love football (darraghmac), Saturday, 2 October 2010 12:19 (fifteen years ago)

yeah never been great. bbc have highlights.

i'm watching it now and enjoying it a lot but friends keep texting about doing something and I almost feel like a sat in front of the telly alone is a bit lame. having said that...it is good watching.

molinaris are a bit of a disaster so far. i don't feel the europeans overall are playing v well or consistently.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Saturday, 2 October 2010 12:21 (fifteen years ago)

if you can get away with it, live ryder cup is as good as sport entertainment gets. absolutely no guilt invlved- the should all come over and watch it in fact, great beers all day with mates event.

the europeans are over-rated this year i think.

i dont love everything, i love football (darraghmac), Saturday, 2 October 2010 12:23 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i agree it is one of the best events you can watch. none of my friends like golf but if it's this or going to a gallery and pretending to like it then ryder cup all the way!

i think it's all well and good for us to say we have higher ranked players than ever before and a better team on paper or whatever, while conveniently ignoring the fact that all of the european successes in recent years have been from a position of underdogs. you just can't tell.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Saturday, 2 October 2010 12:25 (fifteen years ago)

Totally. Rankings are all about individual mind-sets and nothing to do with the Ryder Cup. The Yanks were always gonna come out strong from the underdog position.

Already WSed last summer (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 2 October 2010 12:36 (fifteen years ago)

and based on performances so far...usa will win. the likes of bubba watson are on fire. nobody on the european team apart from kaymer is holing putts.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Saturday, 2 October 2010 12:37 (fifteen years ago)

I get really absurdly nervous about the Ryder Cup. Have muted 5Live as the Donald/Poulter and Double-Mc matches go down to the wire. Anything from 3-7 to 5-5 in the next half-hour...

So...two more fourballs and a whole 'nother foursomes session today? But the forecast for tomorrow is rubbish again.

Michael Jones, Saturday, 2 October 2010 14:31 (fifteen years ago)

the schedule is demented right now, it makes for a real bombardment of action. can't believe westwood and kaymer let that match be halved. on the plus if graeme/rory can win that game that'll make up for it. unbelievably close this year tho.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Saturday, 2 October 2010 14:32 (fifteen years ago)

Michael Jones, Saturday, 2 October 2010 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

Been happily listening - such a shame is not mid-July as this could've been something special. As it ended I can see US getting something out of these matches for a share if not a slight lead going into the singles...exciting anyway.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Sunday, 3 October 2010 18:31 (fifteen years ago)

clarke's had a great career, though! consistency is a talent like any other, and one he lacks certainly, but aside from that he's had his ryder cups and european tours/matchplay big days

Rather more red on the board now - Cink prob about to win 13 so that'll be even-steven on the singles - E5/U5/T3. Which is still fine...

Michael Jones, Monday, 4 October 2010 11:06 (fifteen years ago)

Losing those top two matches is not in Monty's master plan though (and Westwood and McIlroy were both ahead earlier) - a lot of pressure on the rookies in the middle order if Europe are still three or four points short in a couple of hours...

Michael Jones, Monday, 4 October 2010 11:17 (fifteen years ago)

Europe up in seven, down in five - but losing three of the top four matches is going to hurt (now v likely)...the mythical momentum and all that.

Michael Jones, Monday, 4 October 2010 11:36 (fifteen years ago)

yeah defo...those middle matches are impossible to call though. if westwood could somehow fight back for a half that'd be utterly huge.

Michael Jones, Monday, 4 October 2010 12:01 (fifteen years ago)

hoping on harrington...shudder.

poulter was unreal, clinical. that's what's needed, someone who plays even better when they get 2/3 up. donald is looking doubtful to me. ah it's just too hard to call.

Michael Jones, Monday, 4 October 2010 12:30 (fifteen years ago)

It looks like 15-13 to Europe, so substantial are the leads everyone is holding, but I can't believe it's going to be as simple as that, especially as this will go to the final pairing. Has that happened since Kaiwah Island in '91?

Michael Jones, Monday, 4 October 2010 12:58 (fifteen years ago)

it's so exciting...i've got slim hope of fisher somehow pulling something back but yeah, the other games looking fairly solid. slight worry about molinari but he is playing against justin bieber.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Monday, 4 October 2010 13:13 (fifteen years ago)

missing all of this! down to last pairing then? how's that stand?

i dont love everything, i love football (darraghmac), Monday, 4 October 2010 13:15 (fifteen years ago)

it's 13-11 to europe but usa looking likely to win two more...europe look likely to win one more, mcdowell is 2 up in the final game which would win it for europe if he can maintain that, and all things stay the same.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Monday, 4 October 2010 13:17 (fifteen years ago)

It's actually 13-11 to Europe right now:
Molinari 3up vs Fowler on 14
Hanson 4down vs Mickleson on 14
Harrington 5down vs Z Johnson on 13
McDowell 2up vs Mahan on 13

So it'll likely be 14-13 as the last pairing heads down the last 3-4 holes..

xp

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:34 (thirteen years ago)

Ryder Cup is just the best. I mean I love The Masters but for tension nothing comes close to Ryder Cup. Bit disappointed that according to DL3 they've got rid of most of the rough on the course, my biggest complaint about pro golf (aside from pace of play) is when there is no real penalty for not being able to drive the ball straight.

pandemic, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)

There was a penalty last week at the Tour Championship. I went on Thursday and Sunday. The bermuda rough was utterly penal, guys could not hit out of it. It's like a SOS pad. In Chicago, however, you dont have to deal with bermuda.

Im willing to bet any Euro on these boards 5 phony internet dollars on this year's Cup.

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

I'd take Europe tee-to-green, but have a sinking feeling that US has the better putters.

Shit, some goat farmer in Pakistan whose never picked up a club is probably a better putter than a guy like Lee Westwood. That dude has such a bad short game.

step 3: play hardball with sky every time they try to put you on a full deal, cancelling the contract each time.
step 4: watch them come crawling back to renew the 20 quid deal on the final day, knowing each time that they will always do this
step 5: i prob could give you my sky go login if you want it?

That was a terrific afternoon of pacing, flicking the TV back on, adding up the matches EUR were ahead in, calculating final scores, being convinced they could pull it off then being convinced it would be a heroic failure.

The Ryder Cup is the absolute best.

“When I got back into the room, I fell across the bed sideways and fell asleep face down in that position,” Hatton said. “Then I had woken myself up, throwing up in that position. I had then fallen back asleep and then as I’d woken up I had sick all down my arms, both sides, all down my shirt.

“I got off the bed and walked to the bathroom to look in the mirror and I had sick in my face, in my beard. How I set an alarm to make a flight in a few hours’ time, I don’t know. I don’t ever want to get to that state again to be honest.

“I think that if you saw the room that we just sat in drinking, you’d be like: ‘What are you doing?’ But it ended up being fun. I fell asleep at the table and then I ended up getting woken up because everyone had basically left.”

america didn’t even play badly yesterday - in fact they played very well (-16 in the foursomes, -31 in fourballs)

just that europe played out of their skins (-22 in the foursomes, -34 in fourballs)

― ||||||||, Sunday, 28 September 2025 bookmarkflaglink

Yeah every time the Americans played a great putt the Europeans hit right back. I think there was only a 30 min period where Europe were on the back foot on most matches.

Whatta cunt

Don Rea, president of Ryder Cup organisers the PGA of America, has been talking to BBC Sport NI about the abuse Rory McIlroy, in particular, suffered on Saturday.

When asked directly about the words shouted to Rory, he replied: "I haven't heard that. I'm sure it's happened.
"It happened when we were over in Rome and Rory understands.

"I thought he handed the press conferences amazingly but things like that are going to happen and I don't know what was said but I do know golf is the engine of good."

Gaucho Marx̌ (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 28 September 2025 18:35 (eight months ago)

Bit of a tussle between DeChambeau and Fitzpatrick, who was five down at one point but has cut that to 3.

Unbelievable putt by Fitzpatrick to keep that advantage.

watched this whole tourney. maybe too much golf to take in in a weekend lol.

lots of take-aways but i was really surprised henley left that putt short on 18. the screws were tightening and that wouldve really made the last couple matches intense. you just cant leave it short man thats the #1 rule

glad they made it interesting at least.

lil $CHUB (Spottie), Monday, 29 September 2025 18:40 (eight months ago)

keegan bradley saying that maybe they should have set the course up differently when the usa had literally 2 years to decide how they wanted it set up was incredible. that the big idea they came up with was turning a boring but brutally difficult course into a boring but pathetically easy one was even more incredible. also whining about the half point for each side when one team has an injured player and saying the rule should be changed when you could have tried to reach an agreement to change it over the last 2 years is moronic.

oscar bravo, Monday, 29 September 2025 20:49 (eight months ago)

the thing about henley's short putt is that it was perhaps the only real clanger in a pressure situation in about an hour straight across all matches- it really was an extraordinary run of golf from the US team

yes it makes that shot stand out, but it wasn't a cardinal error imo it was just a 7/10 shot- europe starting from where they were meant that the win was inevitable, to actually have brought them to a punch drunk standstill for that period has to be acknowledged as a stunning run- it makes his shot look and seem a lot worse than it was really

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Monday, 29 September 2025 21:38 (eight months ago)

yeah they had to run it perfectly and yeah up to that point, they more or less had! they wouldve still won im sure but a couple more intense holes woulda been super cool.

Spottie, Monday, 29 September 2025 21:53 (eight months ago)

that sand shot was nails though, awesome stuff
