mindy proj is so great

i like that its not overly quotey/zingy and has such a big cast of characters w/ some actual realistic behavior but still deeply hilarious

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 03:16 (eleven years ago) link

not a huge fan but it occasionally taps into some unmined comedy veins. loved the 'storage side of the bed' joke.

s.clover, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 03:19 (eleven years ago) link

i bailed but more due to times issues on my end than the show itself, though it was kinda a disappointment albeit in a 'they'll totally figure this out by the second season maybe' way. wouldn't get too attached to that big cast of characters though. did anyone here see matt & ben back in the day? i remember hearing about it, kaling was affleck apparently.

balls, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 03:20 (eleven years ago) link

i know ur right abt there being too many ppl on this show from like a showbiz/network notes sense but im going 2 hate when its down to like just her and danny

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 03:23 (eleven years ago) link

I was kind of annoyed with the way that in the last episode, everyone (including Brendan) seemed to agree that Brendan had treated her character really horribly when they were always only ever sleeping together casually (with Mindy openly disdaining him as a person). It honestly didn't seem like his fault that she had become attached, unless there was something I'd missed.

The show is generally classic though. Plus, Kelly Kapoor was great in the first few seasons of The Office.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 27 March 2013 03:26 (eleven years ago) link

I have no familiarity with this woman, so the only issue that comes to mind is this: is mindy short for something else or am I supposed to think her given name is mindy?

iirc, she's hindi.

Aimless, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 05:10 (eleven years ago) link

She has been referred to as Mindy ever since her mother was pregnant with her when her parents were living in Nigeria. They were already planning to move to the United States and wanted a "cute American name" for their daughter, and liked the name Mindy from the TV show Mork & Mindy.

Mordy, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 05:12 (eleven years ago) link

So, it was her given name. lawdy lawd. she can't help it then.

aimless how old are you?

balls, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 05:51 (eleven years ago) link

very old. this is no secret. only a few other ilxors can claim to be older and they usually choose not to make that claim, bcz, you know, the youngsters might come steal our walkers and hearing aids and then jeer at us and we couldn't make out what they were saying.

Aimless, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 05:57 (eleven years ago) link

*makes wild guess* aimless is about 54......or not

buzza, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 06:03 (eleven years ago) link

ok just seemed odd that mindy would seem an odd/unlikely/obscure name but apparently mork and mindy did lead to a jump for it as a name (it's short for melinda) as opposed to reflecting a name's new popularity ie how britney spears' 'britney' reflected a trend, not inspired one. in 79 it was in the top 100 names but by 98 it had dropped out of the top 1000. just funny to see someone having the same wtf you gotta be kidding me reaction to the name 'mindy' my grandfather did to the word 'chalupa'. fwiw i'm kinda horrified that apparently 'brooklyn' has become one of the most common names for baby girls now.

balls, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 06:06 (eleven years ago) link

jesus christ the number one most popular name for baby boys now is 'liam'.

balls, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 06:11 (eleven years ago) link

Didn't like it at first, really loving it now. Can't go wrong with Chris Messina either. Turning point was the ep with the "wrong" pants scene. Became a loyal watcher after that. If anyone or anything could have changed my mind about my home birthing plans last year... it would of been the ep introducing the midwives.

Kinda weird to see the ancient dormant 'classic or dud' q hauled out for someone not especially divisive who people generally seem to like or just don't know at all. "Project" is really the first thing I've seen her in and despite the weak title and uneven ensemble it really has improved quickly, love her whole sense of humor.

Yeah, this seems pretty explicit: I’m pretty conservative — my parents are both Republicans. In my office, I’m the most conservative person in an extremely liberal environment — a bunch of bleeding-heart liberals form Harvard and me, the contrarian. I like to be the voice of reason.

She plays with her Harvard grads gently, as a kitten plays with a ball of string, hoping that someday, maybe, with her able coaching, they may learn how to think criticially.

she says she's conservative by her office's standards, and that her parents (but not nec her) are republicans. she's probably just a contrarian w/ a couple right wing positions. i bet she voted obama bc he loves drones. tbh it only makes me like her more.

About the most conclusive bit of evidence that anyone's found, and it is as vague as all the rest, is that she once wrote on her blog "what most people don't know about me is that I am way conservative." I like that she used the wholly juvenile "way" as a modifier instead of "very". This is a clue as to what variety of conservatism she subscribes to, which is apparently not linguistic.

cougar town is the real scrubs redux

I agree from the standpoint that underneath the riffmania you can see actual lines of affection and care between the various characters, whereas The Mindy Project seems to be built upon barely restrained loathing undercut with one likable goofball

keep in mind I don't think that a show has to have likable characters to be enjoyable or funny (#TeamBundy), it's just... there are points where I go "lol I can totally see some ppl I went to college with doing something like that" and then vast swathes of "this is kind of like watching aliens attempt to create a sitcom"

far too much asshole flesh (DJP), Wednesday, 8 May 2013 21:43 (eleven years ago) link

I agree the writing's a bit uneven and the supporting cast needs to be developed a bit more. The best and most original material seems to revolve around the Mindy character's life, whereas too many of the supporting cast are a bit one-dimensional. There are enough good bits in each show to keep me watching though.

this staten island stevie episode may have been the worst half hour of television i have ever watched

乒乓, Saturday, 11 May 2013 16:42 (eleven years ago) link

i feel like some sitcoms start with a pretty small core cast and then slowly branch outward to a larger ensemble or lots of familiar recurring characters, and then there are shows like The Mindy Project that start with way too many people, some of which will be quietly phased out to little protest during 'retooling' between seasons. w/ this show it's more frustrating than usual because the whole thing is supposed to be a star vehicle for one person but she surrounded herself with a security blanket ensemble.

seanpennderizer (some dude), Saturday, 11 May 2013 16:59 (eleven years ago) link

Also, it was weird to me that the last two episodes have ended with dudes fighting over Mindy. It seems a bit repetitive.

The last of the famous international Greyjoys (Nicole), Saturday, 11 May 2013 17:09 (eleven years ago) link

Who fought over Mindy in "Triathlon"?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 11 May 2013 18:57 (eleven years ago) link

Not saying you're wrong; I just don't remember it. If anything, I thought they were fighting over Morgan.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 11 May 2013 18:57 (eleven years ago) link

The charm is fading a little for me but I'm still watching. I found it a little weird that they were strongly hinting at Mindy-Danny finally happening, esp in "Santa Fe" and then seem to have dropped that altogether. Maybe it's intentional but it's not working to develop suspense or anything for me. (New Girl is handling the relationship stories much better imo.) Casey's pretty boring to me and everyone knows it won't work out anyway.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 11 May 2013 19:00 (eleven years ago) link

Scrubs was more fast-paced and absurd, I thought?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 11 May 2013 19:05 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i have no idea how this show is like Scrubs other than it's a comedy about doctors (but less much so about that than Scrubs was).

it would be wrong to say i havent laughed at all while watching her, but i just dont the show/her all that funny. like, i get the tone is 'funny', but i just dont hear all that much funny material, or great gags. its like, its all set up to be hilarious, they just forgot the actual hilarity. she seems to think that talking really manically and acting cute = humour. but then i seem to have this problem with a lot of modern 'hip'(-ish) american comedy (aziz, donald glover, new girl/zooey, etc). its kinda bland? (maybe this series gets a lot better, im sure im behind watching it on british TV).

i liked her book though. shes endearing. just not all that comedic. also, i dunno if its been commented on in this thread, but its kinda interesting how there seem to be no other indian people in her show/in her love life (maybe she just a type and hey, that's fine i suppose). not that there HAVE to be of course, its just a bit interesting.

the buzzfeed link from a few posts up is literally thousands of words about how everyone else on the show is white. some interesting food for thought in the discussion but also kinda overwhelming. i just watch the show and think it's funny.

posi riot (some dude), Wednesday, 16 April 2014 22:55 (ten years ago) link

Well yeah - the stakes are gonna be different if you're approaching this show as a South Asian American! I'm like you in that I can also watch the show and just think that it's funny, that's a, uh, difference in perspective afforded to us by our racial identity in America

, Thursday, 17 April 2014 00:59 (ten years ago) link

it's a show about an aspirational indian doctor with a conservative streak who predominantly dates white people. I can't begrudge any POC frustrated that THIS still passes for a major diversity breakthrough in TV, but when people are like "Mindy should date non-white people" I can't go there any more than I could with someone I knew in real life.

da croupier, Thursday, 17 April 2014 02:41 (ten years ago) link

yeah totally

posi riot (some dude), Thursday, 17 April 2014 02:47 (ten years ago) link

Well I wouldn't downplay its significance too much - it's still a sitcom aired on a major network with a very-underrepresented POC as the lead and focus of the show

But at the same time I wouldn't begrudge the criticism levied at the show in the piece above, and they were very careful to also point out that they love the show in general

I guess, you can be very critical of a show and still fête it, they're not incompatible standpoints

i died @ "Jenny! What were you thinking? A sex party? That's not for regular people. That's for couples in John Updike novels!"

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 12:25 (ten years ago) link

I can understand the criticism on the lack of other Indians/POCs in the show (Mindy's brother did appear a few times in season 1, but I don't think we've seen him during this season?) & Mindy dating only white guys, but on the other hand the show has been pretty good at pointing out that what Mindy's not really a role model, and the stuff she does is not always ethical or politically correct. I think this kind of self-awareness/self-deprecation, acknowledging that the quirks of the "quirky" protagonist aren't necessarily a good thing, is what makes The Mindy Project better and more three-dimensional, say, New Girl. I do feel the show plays it safe in its usage of romcom tropes (even if this acknowledged on a meta level, when the show juxtaposes the plots to the chick lit and romcom movies Mindy loves), most evident in the cavalcade of boyfriends we've seen so far, and there should be room for a show that focuses more on the "Indianness" of the protagonist, but at this point taking TMP into that direction would also feel kinda forced. It is what it is, hopefully other shows can expand on that.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 12:46 (ten years ago) link

How long did Danny think he could keep up the ruse of being Dr Schulman? If the rabbi ever followed through on his promise to refer patients to him, wouldn't they find out he wasn't Dr Schulman almost immediately? It's not like he could write prescriptions under this name. These are the things we should be talking about.

jaymc, Sunday, 3 August 2014 05:42 (nine years ago) link

I think the second season ended pretty nicely, but it felt like the whole series could've ended there, so I'm not sure what they can do for the third season? If they break up Mindy and Danny again, it'll feel forced, but keeping together takes away some of the story possibilities. This is always the problem with "will they or won't they?" couples in TV series: if they got together too quickly, a lot of the energy that made them interesting can be lost, but OTOH dragging the romantic tension for several season without resolving it can get pretty tiring too (see The Nanny or Fraser, for example). I think Fraser eventually resolved quite nicely: they didn't wait for the final season for Niles and Daphne to get together, and subsequently found out they could still write funny plots about the two as a couple.
I hope this route is the one TMP will also take.

Also, if Mindy's constant romantic problems aren't so much in the focus from now, that'll give them more space to develop the supporting cast. The naive receptionist girl and the British doctor totally suffered from having so little screen time during the second season, they showed some potential in season 1, but after that they haven't really had any storylines of their own. IMO the series has a nice, rounded cast of major and supporting characters, so they should really put more effort into strengthening that instead of just doing endless "Mindy's latest fling" plots, those'll get boring after a while.

this quote from kaling suggest there won't be a lot of will-they-wont-they

“Suspense is always good, but there’s a lot of great virtues from the TV comedies we love — I Love Lucy, Modern Family — which show couples together. Mindy and Danny at Costco or (Catholic) Mass is funny — there’s so many funny places you can put them.”

considering the ratings uptick (or at least ratings uptick-over-new-girls-downtick) they got when the danny/mindy relationship heated up (and nick/jess cooled down), i think they know better than to send mindy back to the new-beau wheel

yeah i was totally resigned to the show never melding the romantic and ensemble aspects, but making danny & mindy a couple has kinda done the trick - we no longer have to spend half the episode with a dude outside the ensemble. and while pally just seemed like one more clown they've made him distinct over time.

some dude, Thursday, 16 October 2014 16:36 (nine years ago) link

i could 4-5 legit laughs from this show every episode almost exclusively from mindy. the rest of the cast is good too but she is next-level imo.

Mordy, Thursday, 16 October 2014 16:37 (nine years ago) link

yeah the comedic voice of her/her character has been really strong and fully formed from the jump, even as they've played mix-and-match with the ensemble

some dude, Thursday, 16 October 2014 16:56 (nine years ago) link

Pally is great, but it feels he's kinda made the British doctor redundant, that guy had hardly anything to do last season. Also, I don't like the way they've gradually reduced the female supporting cast; looks like Betsy has inepxlicably disappearead between seasons 2 and 3, just like Gwen and the two other female friends of Mindy inexplicably disappeared after sesons 1. It feels kinda weird, Mindy is depicted as a feminine women, but now she appears to have no other friends than the masculine guys from her work.

Tuomas, Friday, 17 October 2014 12:08 (nine years ago) link

I do hope they'll bring back Rhea Perlman for more episodes... She was a perfect choice for Danny's mom, and not just because it explains his height.

Tuomas, Friday, 17 October 2014 12:16 (nine years ago) link

i understand mourning the women that got lost in the shuffle of mindy's supporting cast (i liked betsy a lot), but i think you're making a big ol unadvisable assumption in saying a (*gingerly picks up the landmine of a phrase you gave us, thanks so much*) "feminine woman" would naturally have close female friends, and be uncomfortable in a primarily male friend circle

da croupier, Friday, 17 October 2014 14:21 (nine years ago) link

i mean mindy is portrayed as extremely selfish and competitive as hell, practically a cross between liz lemon and angelina jolie

da croupier, Friday, 17 October 2014 14:24 (nine years ago) link

I didn't say she'd be uncomfortable with guys, just that it feels weird a woman like her wouldn't have *any* female friends. Though I guess you could fanwank it away by saying that her female friends from season 1 are still there, the series just doesn't anymore show what she does with them. That doesn't explain what happened to Betsy though...

Tuomas, Friday, 17 October 2014 14:38 (nine years ago) link

i just think you should realize that with the "feminine" and "like her" addendums to "woman" you're suggesting a) that there is a type of woman you could imagining having no female friends and b) that you'd consider that person more "masculine" than mindy. again, unadvised.

without engaging in "fanwank," she is pretty centered on work and her relationship right now, so subplots about girlfriends outside the already chock-full-of-clowns office would be a little gratuitous.

da croupier, Friday, 17 October 2014 14:46 (nine years ago) link

let's not forget most of her subplots about her friend in season 1 involved them being mad at her and her resenting their evolving lives

Mindy Kaling is obviously great, but I've started to appreciate Chris Messina's comic chops more and more as the show goes on. His "victory dance" in "Caramel Princess Time", when he managed to make it in time to work despite Mindy's sabotage, was just hysterical. Also, while the whole "guy hiding his weaknesses and insecurities behind a rough, masculine façade" may be bit of a cliche, I think with Danny they've handled it really well, both acting- and writing-wise.

And I was glad to see Rhea Perlman appear again, which I take it means she'll become a recurring character? But speaking of guest stars, am I the only one who thought the new romantic writer character looked kinda like ILX's very own Mandee? Something about her eyes, her face, her hair, was eerily similar.

svend, Sunday, 11 January 2015 03:26 (nine years ago) link

I'm glad if they're fleshing out Tamara, feels like she has potential to become a cool character if don't they use her only as part of Morgan/Tamara hijinks. (I hope that's the reason they broke up the two, not just so they could build up to some corny triangle drama.)

I like how that series actually has a lot female characters look a bit different from the sort women you usually see in mainstream TV, and they're still depicted as attractive, not just as vehicles for comedy of something. Like Jessica, the new doctor character, or the erotic fiction writer Peter dated a few episodes ago.

Tuomas, Sunday, 11 January 2015 16:14 (nine years ago) link

Also, looks like they're gonna address Mindy's position as a 2nd gen Indian American for the first time? I think it's kinda cool that they have haven't made her heritage a thing at all, but OTOH it seems like her conflict with the immigrant Indian doctor might provide some good story opportunities, and a way for the show to tackle some of the stuff the critics have said it to refuses to tackle.

In the tall tale that he is spinning on conservative news this week, Chokalingam neglects a few critical details. First of all, Chokalingam fails to emphasize that he was rejected from or waitlisted to most of the medical schools he applied to: Columbia University, Cornell University, George Washington University, Mount Sinai, University of Nebraska, Nobay, University of Pittsburgh, University of Rochester, University of Pennsylvania, Washington University, University of Wisconsin, Yale University, and Case Western.

horseshoe, Sunday, 5 April 2015 20:04 (nine years ago) link

should be noted that the author of that blog post doesn't seem to know much about the med school application process. even 15-20 years ago a 3.1/31 applicant is only marginally competitive for most of those schools, so getting rejected from them doesn't say much, even considering the race thing.

i don't doubt the veracity of this thing, really. identifying as black helped this guy a lot, but so what? medical schools by and large have a mission to produce a physician workforce that reflects the patients they serve. it's not exactly a secret. i can't imagine this story changing many minds on race-conscious admission policies
