I used to work in that building Alex Salmond is standing outside of. This is a much better photo for Highland Council:

This guy (now an SNP councillor) was the local mechanic in the village where I grew up. I haven't seen him for ~10 years, whenever we were playing football he used to run over and blooter the ball into someone's garden/through someone's window. Seeing his picture now fills me with profound sadness.

Local SNP councillor Grant Laing said yesterday that he was shocked to hear what had happened.

“He was a really decent guy with a good sense of humour,” he declared.

“He liked to keep himself to himself but he would pass the time of day with anyone who spoke to him.

“He was always very active and he was passionate about gliding.

“He even offered to take me with him sometime but I never took him up on it.”

“I feel very sorry for his family.

“Spittalfield is such a small place so when something like this happens it affects everyone.”

Another excellent cartoon from our site artist Codhead. This one is of Labour Party Counillor Broadbent who has taken almost £800 a year from North Yorkshire Council and Scarborough Borough Council for broadband which we believe costs him less than £300 a year, giving him a £500 per year profit.

Coun Barnett, who represents Hangleton and Knoll, was approached for a comment on the issue yesterday but declined.

The complaint relates to views she expressed to The Argus in August after place mats featuring golliwogs were found on sale in Bert’s Homestore in Brighton. At the time Coun Barnett argued that the dolls were not racist and branded the complaints against the store “political correctness gone too far”.

When asked why the shop should continue to sell the mats, she said: “They’re nostalgic, not racist. When I was young I remember saving up for a badge showing a golliwog playing a banjo.

“My children had golliwogs and they preferred them to teddy bears. It’s because they’ve got happy, smiling little faces.”

In 2011 Coun Barnett was found guilty of bringing the office into disrepute after handing out maps to travellers to try to get them to leave her ward.

A councillor was prosecuted over unpaid council tax after officials refused to settle the matter out of court.

Patrick Warner, who represents Sovereign ward on Eastbourne Borough Council, claims the local authority he serves is using summons as a way to raise money.

He missed payments on his rates after losing his job last year.

Coun Warner told The Argus: “I’m not a silver spoon Tory.

“I have worked hard all my life from when I grew up on a council estate and never tried to shirk my responsibility.

“Those at the top obviously have enough during difficult times and those at the bottom can access council tax benefit.

“But it’s the people in the middle who work hard every day that are being treated somewhat unfairly.”

Councillor Jodie Jones is a 23-year-old beauty
BY NEWS TODAY · AUGUST 30, 2011

SHE’S a far cry from the stereotypical stuffy old politician, but councillor Jodie Jones is causing a stir at her local town hall – and is already being dubbed ‘Britain’s sexiest councillor.’

The Tory politician – who gave up her social life to pursue a career in politics – certainly looks like she would be more at home on the nation’s catwalks than council chambers.

Stunning Oxbridge graduate Jodie was elected as the youngest councillor on Cannock Chase District Council earlier this year making her a surprising addition to the Staffordshire authority.

A far cry from the often dour-looking men and women sitting on Britain’s council’s,the glamorous 23-year-old has sure been turning heads at the council chambers.

While the down-to-earth beauty is representing the voice of Britain’s youth generation, she freely admits that she enjoys a night out on the town with her friends.

And judging by her Facebook profile, she’s certainly not shy – as a range of pictures show her in clinches with female friends, partying in a bikini and sitting in the street holding two bottles of booze.

But her lifestyle as a young girl has not been to the taste of all of her colleagues.

Councillor for Heath Hayes and Wimblebury, Diane Todd, said: “These pictures do not show the behaviour she should be displaying.

“That’s not the behaviour I expect of a councillor, she needs to make sure that she isn’t seen sat swigging from bottles like this.”

Fellow councillor, Christine Mitchell, warned Jodie she need to make sure her normal lifestyle doesn’t get her in trouble.

“We all know what young people do,” she said. “I’m sure if you go out on a Saturday you’ll find the older councillors inebriated as well, but she has signed up to a code of conduct.

“She must make sure that she doesn’t do anything or say anything that might bring the council into disrepute.”

But pretty Jodie says the transition from politics student to politician has taken a toll on her personal life, sacrificing love and friendships along the way.

A local councillor question:

If someone were to be on a Parish Council and it was proposed that, say, the field next to their house should be replaced by a factory or a housing estate ... would the councillor be allowed to have an opinion on this or would this be considered a "conflict of interest"?

djh, Tuesday, 3 January 2017 22:02 (seven years ago) link

They have to declare a conflict of interest and then sit out the decision that their friends make for them

Rock Wokeman (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 3 January 2017 22:06 (seven years ago) link

But would that count as a "conflict of interest"?

I'd much rather someone "local" (by which I mean directly affected) be arguing the case for the local area and I'm guessing that's why most people get involved in local politics.

For some reason, I draw a distinction between the above example and ... I dunno ... if the councillor owned the field and was going to make a fortune if it was built on (though perhaps they are just on a spectrum).

djh, Tuesday, 3 January 2017 22:13 (seven years ago) link

Almost any kind of commercial building in the vicinity of a house is going to have some kind of impact on property value. Strictly I don't know how conflict of interest rules work at Parish level, or whether parish councils have jurisdiction over most planning decisions, but the thin veneer of local democracy has to at least maintain the illusion that elected officials must place the broader interests of the people who elected them over personal prejudice or gain - however unlikely that is in practice

Hutts were a large slug-like sentient species who were native to the planet Nal Hutta. They were well known as galactic gangsters whose Grand Hutt Council controlled the Hutt Clan crime syndicate. One famous Hutt was the crime lord Jabba, who ruled a massive criminal empire from his palace on Tatooine.

Paid st Mirren 12.50 to watch a very shitty game they played against Celtic earlier.

As is fairly normal at smaller spfl grounds there was an SNP advertising board along the side of the field. less commonly - in my experience - there was a board that read Councillor Eddie Devine - in labour colours.

finding this picture of Councillor Eddie Devine almost made paying 12.50 and watching the shitty game worthwhile:

I presume he is pointing at uncut hedges there? Labour councillors will get involved with all sorts of corrupt housing schemes that line their own pockets and slash the fuck out of local maintenance budgets with a very heavy heart. Lol good work if you can get it.

calzino, Wednesday, 16 September 2020 23:07 (three years ago) link

About 18 months ago a local councillor tried to taxi me (as a Labour party member) to a meeting to vote for some housing project on a local greenfield site. God knows why I didn't tell him to fuck himself as a first response, but i politely did as a second. Then the next day someone tried to burn his house down and I presumed it was probably some racist hate-crime. But the more I learn about him, the more I presume he has just made a lot of enemies - even in the Asian community and is basically a deeply corrupt motherfucker!

calzino, Wednesday, 16 September 2020 23:18 (three years ago) link
