Unless she plays it really differently, I just imagine this being so much like her character from Zero Dark Thirty that it would be yawnsome. Maybe she'll take a different angle, but earnest and stressed out do-gooder is already well on its way to becoming her standard role.

When I was trying to think of who I'd pair her with last night, I kept going back to Cliff Curtis for some reason. I think it's because I like how he played the "Searle" role in 'Sunshine.'

hey you know what will be interesting about season two of this, maybe more than the cast/locale/degree of embroilment in occult happenings: how it is structured. the first's plot facilitated this really prerty sophisticated framework; different time periods, reliability of narrators, shifting focus. the newer cops were a part of this. i wonder if the guy has ideas for something equivalent

like the collision of the narration with the protagonists in varying eras of vigor & weariness gave it such weight

yeah that is one underrated strength of the one-off 8 season arc, they can blow through a longer time period like a novel where most shows have to proceed with a straightforward year-by-year chronology to match the production schedule. i wouldn't necessarily want TD to always jump back and forth between 2 eras, but the idea of a long investigation unfolding over years is good. so many cop shows have to resolve cases in unrealistically short periods of time, might as well let things play out for much longer.

I kind of wish they would go the full Bolaño with this and set it at the San Ysidro border (but then I actually just wish HBO would commission a sprawling 2666 adaptation....)

I don't think McConaghey's performance as Rust was unlike anything he'd done before, it was pretty close to his more recent roles in Mud, Killer Joe, etc.

While I consider myself a fan of Lin, and don't even hate the actors being batted around, this thing seems destined for the biggest backlash. I can't say I'm surprised they still want to call it True Detective, but I almost can.

like, unless the new directors go all-in imitating Fukunaga's style (and since he directed the entire series, it WAS his style), all that will carry over is a script by Enrico Polazzo and maybe a credit sequence full of sad cops and lady butts

idk most tv shows have many different directors over the course of a single season while visual cohesion is maintained, but it might be kind of cool to keep the writer and switch the director and actors up so theres still some continuity but it also has a self contained seasonal aspect

Haven't seen much of his 00s work but I like him in Bruges/Psychopaths and he's recently been great a lot of thankless roles (saving mr banks, fright night, Crazy Heart). But for all the movies where his name is first in the credits, only Phone Booth and SWAT have anything close to a decent gross-to-budget ratio.

i think it's easy to put mcconaughey's performance in a broader context now that the dust has settled, but TD season 1 was a departure for him even considering the rest of the work around it these last couple years, and the same can be said of harrelson. the show certainly isn't without its faults (maybe fewer pornily graphic sex scenes pls) and the lack of fukunaga is, i think, a bigger deal than who ends up acting in season 2. this show is either going to be excellent or unwatchable, and i'm holding out hope.

McC had already shown some of these smarts in a little seen but not bad movie called The Lincoln Lawyer, in which he showed he was good at thinking on his feet. I'm not sure why it's a surprise he can be good. Most actors are decent when given decent material. Why else are they pros?

anyway, for all of true d's (many!) problems, race is not one of them re ially. the two most prominent black characters (michael potts and tory kittles) receive top billing alongside mcconaughey, harrelson and monaghan) are A. cops & not particularly stereotypical ones and B. markedly more well-adjusted than the brooding wite leads!

the ideal world would give those two characters their own show, & hopefully the success of stuff like empire and how to get away with murder points toward the right direction for that to happen.

4real does being a "sort of sophisticated place" mean being hyper-acutely aware of the way in which a web gossip news org (which i enjoy, much love, but c'mon) manages its editorial process and publishing schedule in the day to day. i know y'all are into radical transparency with regards to how and why things are published but for people to be sophisticated do they actually have to _care_?

we should all be very worried...for season two, which isn't set in Louisiana but rather in L.A. Pizzolatto's leather-jacket philosophizing spoken by...Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell? In Los Angeles? A show about two brooding, masculine detectives in Los Angeles. Talk about disruption.

yup. even season 1 abandoned what made it unique and unravelled into cliche, pizzolato doesn't have enough critical distance from the characters he creates. Rust basically transforms into batman around the halfway mark. mcconaughey's ego can't resist the hero worship of the script and what was up to that some convincing method acting disappears for four episodes of A-lister camera posing.

s1 would have been so much more interesting if it was about Rust bringing Marty over to the dark side instead of the watery redemption story it farted out instead.

Judging from the trailer, what we know about the season's plot from the initial press release, and the filming locations that they've been to, I think it's going to be set partially in Norther California, for the scary rural white people setting of the show, to repeat what rural Louisiana could do in season one, and then they seem set to go to the San Fernando Valley (they filmed near Ventura Blvd and Studio City a little bit) for their LA proper section, and I think that's where Vince Vaughn will come into play.

The trailer opens on the 14/5 interchange that takes you out of Los Angeles County and to either Palmdale or Bakersfield, and further than that to Central and Northern California, but that opening shot is a hint that the division between big city California and its rural and poorer counterpart will be a theme. That some parts of California are poor because some parts of it are rich, with transportation being for this story what California water was for "Chinatown" (this theme was alluded to in the press release from a year ago, so we're just connecting the trailer to that).

And visually I'm guessing a cross between Vince Vaughn playing the kind of scumbag that would've been in "Magnolia", and Colin Ferrell driving in the same parts of town, and in the same moral atmosphere, that Ryan Gosling explores in "Drive," or that's featured in the show Justified, which is supposed to be Kentucky but is actually filmed in Green Valley, south of Palmdale.

Vince Vaughn obsessively caring for a one story Sherman Oaks home, and then cutting back to Colin Ferrell in a cowboy motel an hour north, packing and unpacking an old school briefcase over and over again.

That'll be the show.

even mcadams - who's got the least turkeys (poor kitsch got slaughtered with john carter and battleship right out the gate), could use a juicy prestige role to get her out of romcomland

to be clear, i like farrell but damn america has been very, VERY consistent in having no interest in seeing a movie with his name first in the credits. and vaughn's been in freefall over the last decade.

in terms of gross/budget ratio, the only movie with Colin Farrell first in the credits to be even remotely a hit is Phone Booth, which is hilarious. I guess I we just don't like seeing him talk to other people.

runner-up is In Bruges, which tbf did quite well outside the US

and is great. i like him!

in bruges is the best, basically the key with farrell is he either has to speak in his natural accent (bruges) or not be /the/ star of something (crazy heart, that fright night remake, seven psychopaths, intermission, ondine)

yeah see crazy heart did well but fright night, seven psychopaths, intermission and ondine all tanked (again, in terms of gross-to-budget - just as a very sloppy shorthand you'd probably want the global gross to be more than 2.5 times the budget to really call it a hit, so for instance even though his total recall brought in 200m, only about half of that goes to the studio, which spent 125m to make it, not even counting the money spent on advertising). so basically the chance to drink a little of what mcconaughey's been having is a godsend to him and vaughn.
