The results thread is finally here!

This took forever. Sorry for the delays and thank you for your patience. Thanks to all of you who voted. But most importantly, big thanks to gr8080 for the incredible artwork. I can't wait for everyone to see it!

We got 30 ballots and a total of 231 songs got at least one vote. We used total no of votes and/or total no. of first place votes to break some ties. This will be a top 50 list.

And now, without further ado...

Eyes is an awesome track and only just missed out on my ballot.

I'm not a big fan of Dhuo - Walkin' tbh it's a bit plodding and feels more like bad synthpop than exciting Italo.

I have a feeling a lot of amazing tunes are going to shafted, but roll on the results!

Watch Out & Dancing Therapy are *super* classic. As are both Clio A-sides (no surprise that they involve the same guy who did the Pineapples record). I prefer the dub/instrumental version of "Hey Hey Guy," though. Walkin' is just alright, and I've never gotten into that Gazebo track.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 9 February 2015 18:37 (nine years ago) link

'Watch Out' another one of my votes. So good.

emil.y, Monday, 9 February 2015 18:40 (nine years ago) link

I love that, as far as I can't tell, there's NO guitar in most of these songs, yet Dieter Bohlen is ALWAYS playing guitar. The same goes for a lot of "live" performances/videos from other acts of the time.

daavid, Monday, 9 February 2015 21:19 (nine years ago) link

Oof, destroy Modern Talking.

On the other hand, M&G's "When I Let You Down / Boogie Tonight" might be one of the best 12" in the genre. The only two songs they recorded. Fred Ventura did a cover of WILYD in 2007, and it's ok.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 9 February 2015 21:21 (nine years ago) link

the 12" mix of "You're My Heart, You're My Soul" is worth a listen for those skeptical about its placing

example (crüt), Monday, 9 February 2015 21:23 (nine years ago) link

this one

example (crüt), Monday, 9 February 2015 21:26 (nine years ago) link

I can fully recommend the full length animated movie about Modern Talking: "Dieter - Der Film". It is batshit insane.

There *is* plenty of faux-Nile Rodgers guitar in You're My Heart You're My Soul though, but it bears no relation to what Dieter or Thomas are doing with their instruments in the videos. But yes, badly synced videos not limited in any way to MT.

Siegbran, Monday, 9 February 2015 21:31 (nine years ago) link

I've got nothing but love for "You're My Heart, You're My Soul" and I'm glad it placed. I might have even voted for "Brother Louie" had it been nominated.

daavid, Monday, 9 February 2015 21:32 (nine years ago) link

Back when I was still DJing Italo I always threw in a Modern Talking instrumental somewhere along the line (Cheri Cheri Lady for example has an awesome bassline), always got great response as people invariably recognise the tune but can't identify it without the vocals.

12" version of Fotonovela is ALL TIME. Definitely the best Spanish Italo Disco song ever, if you are keeping track. Best use of strings in an Italo record? May also be the only Italo track with xylophones and accordion (which you can hear more on the 12").

daavid, Monday, 9 February 2015 22:06 (nine years ago) link

Doesn't surprise me at all, AFAIK Modern Talking was the second best selling disco act of all time after Boney M.

Siegbran, Monday, 9 February 2015 22:07 (nine years ago) link

that's a very loose definition of "disco", though

daavid, Monday, 9 February 2015 22:09 (nine years ago) link

Now I guess, but at the time this was disco to 99% of the population.

Siegbran, Monday, 9 February 2015 22:11 (nine years ago) link

they were immensely successful, no doubt about that

daavid, Monday, 9 February 2015 22:11 (nine years ago) link

xps

I was thinking about this during the nominations thread but don't think I ever put it out there: who was the audience for non-crossover Italo releases? Was it mostly nightclubs? How many young people in Italy (or France or Spain) in the 80s have heard e.g. "When I Let You Down" or "Hey Hey Guy"? Were there clubs in the UK playing this? (I guess mike t-diva addressed that one a bit)

⊤ℝolliℵg M∃th H∑a∂ (seandalai), Monday, 9 February 2015 22:22 (nine years ago) link

i think that's a glockenspiel in "Fotonovela" not a xylophone

example (crüt), Monday, 9 February 2015 22:22 (nine years ago) link

I personally like my Italo to be on the pop side, but I didn't vote anyway.

daavid, Monday, 9 February 2015 22:22 (nine years ago) link

I am definitely in the minority who find "Pink Footpath" overrated, but it gets a super amount of love from even non-italo fans.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 9 February 2015 22:24 (nine years ago) link

xxpost, you are right. The bars in a xylophone are made out of wood. But what's a marimba then? I'm confused.

daavid, Monday, 9 February 2015 22:27 (nine years ago) link

The first time I heard Pink Footpath (in an old Aeroplane mix iirc) was one of those moments you just know right away you're hearing a song that will be an all-timer.

ewar woowar (or something), Monday, 9 February 2015 22:29 (nine years ago) link

Seandalai: there's an interview here, in which a Venice DJ talks a bit about the perception of Italo in Italy at the time:
http://thump.vice.com/words/bottin-and-mike-simonetti-obsess-over-italo-disco

I feel Italo also appealed to record collectors as well as clubbers: so many devoted labels and sublabels, so many strange aliases and one-offs to geek out over.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 9 February 2015 22:35 (nine years ago) link

oh awesome, thanks!

⊤ℝolliℵg M∃th H∑a∂ (seandalai), Monday, 9 February 2015 22:37 (nine years ago) link

Xylophones and marimbas are made out of wood, I believe. Glockenspiel has metal bars. Probably more likely that it's a glockenspiel in Fotonovela, but it looks like a xylophone in the video.

ewar woowar (or something), Monday, 9 February 2015 22:54 (nine years ago) link

Also agree that "Get Closer" placed too low. The delay on that synth is classic.

daavid, Monday, 9 February 2015 22:56 (nine years ago) link

I like how "Get Closer" is pretty much the same song as "The Night" but just as awesome.

I think someone nominating the entire Valerie Dore Lancelot album was amusing. Love the title track from that though.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 9 February 2015 22:58 (nine years ago) link

Yes, they just shifted the chords and tweaked the melody a bit… but the instrumentation is identical.

daavid, Monday, 9 February 2015 23:01 (nine years ago) link

I was living in West Berlin in 1983/84, and heard Italo in gay and mixed-gay clubs alongside hi-NRG, as well as on the radio. I doubt it had much traction outside gay cubs in the UK, give or take the odd Ryan Paris crossover hit.

mike t-diva, Monday, 9 February 2015 23:02 (nine years ago) link

Get Closer is a good example of a particular type of pop alchemy then, it does something much more with those parts than The Night imo.

It has been removed from his wiki page but it used to be claimed that Bolero was the longest reigning No.1 single in the history of the Spanish charts. There are lots of videos of the latter day Fancy, looking like Kim Jong Il, turning up at tiny conventions of about a dozen awestruck fans. He still plays big nostalgia events in Russia and Germany.

brimstead, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 00:02 (nine years ago) link

Xps, I'd always had the impression that Hey Hey Guy was a fairly canonical Italo hit but I think my perception of a lot of this is skewed by my window on the genre being primarily Eastern European. About 75% of the comments on the YouTube videos of Laszlo's songs are from people with Russian, Polish, etc names. I heard it played over the store radio in a supermarket in Armenia last year and didn't find that surprising. I love the fact that there seems to be an overlapping, but not entirely overlapping, Italo / Eurodance canon between Western and Eastern Europe. The Dutch group Digital Emotion was another that was huge in Russia, having been featured extensively in an episode of the Soviet rip off of Tom and Jerry, but are largely unknown here.

⊤ℝolliℵg M∃th H∑a∂ (seandalai), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 21:23 (nine years ago) link

Love Dolce Vita. Still surprises me it was one of the few Italo hits in the UK.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 22:19 (nine years ago) link

I consider Italo to be a full part of the disco timeline, it makes perfect sense from a worldwide (non-US) context where disco did not die in 1980, but ended in 1988 (almost overnight) with house.

There's also no real musical reason to exclude "I Feel Love" from an Italo poll apart from the fact that it would be an overwhelming winner (which makes it a perfectly good reason in the context of this poll).

Wow, did not expect More Than Ever to place! Such a cool track, maybe it's not as obscure as I thought. Ma Quale Idea might have the best Italian rapping vocals ever. Although since it's sung in Italian and not English, that sort disqualifies it from being Italo, right? :) The extended mix of "I Love My Radio" is another all-time favorite of mine, have played that vinyl to death. Also really like the Slow Version of Void Vision.

didn't vote for righeira (tho i do love it), but had ginny as my #3 and matia as my #4 - it's maybe not strictly italo but i still think 'can't be serious' is the apotheosis of the italo/balearic intersect and 'ti sento' is such OTT high drama, that last long high note she hits right before the end <3

Yay for Sandra, "Maria Magdalena" was the first Italo tune (if you can call it Italo, I did vote for it anyway) I fell in love with when I was 13 or something! In case you didn't know, it was produced and co-written by her (then) husband Michael Cretu, who later on became the guy behind Enigma (of "Sadeness" and "Return to Innocence" fame). Dude had quite a career! I think he's also the keytarist in the video?

xpost im familiar with that song, moka! its great indeed. If Righeira are two guys from Turin, why are they singing in Spanish though?

― tayto fan (Michael B)

The lyrics were actually written by La Bionda and Carmelo not by Righeira, but they're also Italian so no idea why the Spanish. The thing I love about those two lyrics is how fun and dumb they appear at first listen but Vamos A La Playa is actually about nuclear destruction and No Tengo Dinero is about post-war class struggle in Italy. The chorus become some sort of ironic joke when you read the verses.

Here's my translation of both:

VAMOS A LA PLAYA

(CHORUS:)
Let's go to the beach oh o-o-o-oh (x6)

The bomb has exploded
Radiation is roasting
and painting everything blue

Let's go to the beach

Everyone with hats on
the radioactive winds
were messing up our hair

Let's go to the beach
the sea is clean at last
no more rotten fish
but the water is still fluorescent

Let's go to the beach

NO TENGO DINERO

I have no money oh
I have no money no no no no

The modern rich are living in here
in the highest place in my city
Nurturing themselves with images and relax
I wish I was there

I have no money oh

The new italians are creating in here
fearless enthusiasts of ferocious speed
Neo-psychic is the syntactic eden
I'd rather be somewhere else

I have no money

(the final part is sort of broken spanish and all the lyrics I've seen make no sense but here's what I think they meant:)

Neo-psychic
Kissed by goddess you are
Homeland of those who believe

Neo-psychic

There are quite a few other examples of Italo in Spanish, or at least with some bits in Spanish. Some of them by French acts as well like Magazine 60 and Bandolero.

daavid, Thursday, 12 February 2015 00:23 (nine years ago) link

My own theory is that Spanish as a language was considered 'cool' in '80s Europe. But I really have nothing to back that up.

daavid, Thursday, 12 February 2015 00:26 (nine years ago) link

I like how a track called "Dirty Talk" has no talking in it.

There was a vocal version on the A-side of the UK release. This version doesn't have the introductory giggle, but it's close enough: http://youtu.be/b8crkDgEwGE

My band covered the song this Xmas. It was a bit more ramshackle than either of the other versions, but it was FUN.

(Same thing happened a few months earlier, with Nino De Angelo "Jenseits Von Eden" (#1) and its English-language counterpart, Masquerade "Guardian Angel" (#2). Nino De Angelo and Laura Branigan eventually became Germany's two best-selling singles of 1984.)

feel like anyone over 30 would get a proustian rush from the opening synth on this track wether they knew what italo was or not

― gr8080

This is OTM. The fade-up is essentially as close as it gets for me musically to the suggestion of synaesthesia, that synth tone emerges and it's like I can smell the neon tinted steam. Love this track so hard, and the b-side instrumental isn't just the backing track either, there's this new other texture that comes in during the last two minutes that sounds like helicopter rotor blades cutting through congealed soda pop. VWACKA VWACKA VWACKA VWACKA

Favorite new discovery is Ryan Paris, where has this track been my whole life? Gorgeous melody.

4/20 placed so far, sure to rack up another 3 tomorrow at least, more depending if you all dig the transcendentally silly Hypnotic Tango as much as I do.

The Scratch mix of Happy Station totally eclipsed the original mix at the time. I doubt that's the "official video", though - it looks like the sort of bonkers staging that the weekly German pop TV show Formel Eins would come up with.

Very nice, I'm not super versed into Italo, so there's a lot of new and cool stuff for me in this poll. Here's my ballot:

1. Tantra - Hills of Katmandu
2. Immortals - The Ultimate Warlord
3. Laura Branigan - Self Control
4. Chaplin Band - Il Veliero
5. Fast Radio - Under My Thumb
6. Tullio de Piscopo - Stop Bajon (Club Mix)
7. Erotic Drum Band - Horn-y
8. Sandra - (I’ll Never Be) Maria Magdalena
9. Sunbelt - Spin It
10. Moses - We Just
11. Kat Mandu - Hooked on Voices
12. Macho - I'm A Man
13. Baltimora - Tarzan Boy
14. Automat - Automat
15. Limahl/Girogio Moroder - Never Ending Story
16. Alisha - All Night Passion
17. Azoto - San Salvador
18. Lime - Guilty
19. Easy Going - Fear
20. Kebekelektrik - War Dance

I was a bit disappointed that "Hills of Katmandu" didn't make it, to me it's the greatest cosmic disco epic of all time, Italo or otherwise. I guess the popularity of Tantra has been hurt by Unidisc's stupidly restrictive licensing policy, for a long time their material was hard to find on CD... But their whole output was finally reissued in 2013 as 2CD comp by Harmless, I thought that would've made them more popular, they certainly deserve it!

Tuomas, Friday, 13 February 2015 10:02 (nine years ago) link

Hey Daavid, I looked at the results table, and I see you have Immortals' "The Ultimate Warlord" listed there twice, at #55 and at #179 (the second time it's listed as just "Ultimate Warlord"). And it looks like the votes were split between those two entires, if you combine them it would have 122 points, so it should've made it to the #40 spot in the countdown.

Tuomas, Friday, 13 February 2015 10:11 (nine years ago) link

Hopefully you can correct this and Grady can find some cool graphic for the tune. :) It's definitely worth it.

daavid, Friday, 13 February 2015 15:54 (nine years ago) link

I can do it when I'm back home in front of the computer at some point.

Surprised Dirty Talk didn't score higher.

Also surprised about comment upthread about not hearing the italo influence on New Order. From the euro-disco/moroder synth basslines of Everything's Gone Green and Temptation, to the admitted influence of Dirty Talk on Blue Monday...

ciderpress, Monday, 16 February 2015 23:47 (nine years ago) link

I think the problem is there's is at least 2 or three "canons". It was a pretty wide-ranging thing with different periods and angles and appeal to different crowds. The italo that made it through the filter of WBMX and the italo that I-F and the electro crowd like and the big pop hits...similar threads, time period, location etc but different enough to suggest there's a canon. Before Mixed Up in the Hague nobody in america was talking about Spacer Woman and Take a Chance, but Dirty Talk and I'm Ready and I'm Going to Go were what was talked about.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 17 February 2015 05:33 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, the obscure electro/import tracks definitely became a thing much later. The "canon" before Italo became hip could more or less be summarized by these 4 compilations from 1990:
Vol 1
Vol 2
Vol 3
Vol 4

Siegbran, Tuesday, 17 February 2015 08:31 (nine years ago) link

The ZYX Best Of Italo Disco compilations were also pretty instrumental in building it up, i think.

Rainbow DAESH (ShariVari), Tuesday, 17 February 2015 08:35 (nine years ago) link

Even those canons were different than the club cannon. The stuff that was either licensed to the US, released on US labels or otherwise made it through, my first awareness of italo prior to I-F was an american/chicago/detroit take. Like Fuzz Dance on Sire, NY labels like Emergency and Importe/12 creating a an american version of italo, then in the mid 80s the stuff that stuck w/ the chicago and detroit djs, often, especially later, only the instrumentals.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 17 February 2015 17:35 (nine years ago) link

My ballot:
Pineapples - Come on Closer
Alexander Robotnick - Problemes d'Amour
Mr. Flagio - Take A Chance
International Music System - Dancing Therapy
Charlie - Spacer Woman
My Mine - Hypnotic Tango
Neon - Skydiver
Loui$ - Pink Footpath
Amin Peck - Girl on Me
Crazy Gang - Every Sunday
Automat - Automat
Decadance - On And On
BWH - Stop
Scotch - Take Me Up
Jo Squillo Eletrix - Avventurieri ‎
Big Ben Tribe - Tarzan Loves the Summer Nights
Immortals - The Ultimate Warlord
Peter Richard - Walking in the Neon
Righeira - Vamos A La Playa
Pino D'Angio - Ma Quale Idea

Would have definitely voted for Azoto - Anytime or Place, if it were nominated. Also, kinda can't believe Amin Peck - Anxiety wasn't nominated, and the overall un-love for Gary Low is a bit disappointing. "I Want You" and "You Are a Danger" feel like certified classics.

On a self-promotional note, I made this "mix" in 2005: http://thesearepowerfulhours.com/italoph.html

If y'all are unfamiliar with the concept of a "power hour," it's basically an organized drinking activity where everyone drinks a shot of beer every minute for an hour, and in this case, specifically, drink a shot of beer everytime the song changes. A real 1 hour immersion into my thoughts regarding Italo Disco from way back when. Enjoy!

thethese, Friday, 20 February 2015 06:12 (nine years ago) link

Also, really surprised about Neon - Skydiver not placing at all. Assuming a lot of us kind of "grew up" on CBS Top 100s, in a series of all-time commentaries, I-F's proclamation that that track "was not recorded, it was LAID DOWN" would resonate a bit more.

Here’s the latest Mirage radio show we did. I feel the inspiration for “Flying Bolero” is the Kébekélektrik cover of “Bolero”—Gag’s version hints at the melody but never gives in. Cool A side though, yet another great one hit Italo wonder. I agree with the post above that this genre has seemingly no end of obscurities that turn out to be interesting*, especially if you factor in all the other strands of synth-dance that was happening around it.

*high tolerance of cheese/kitsch often necessary

Nice work Skip. Agree with you about mixing italo live with the more variable structures (and tones). After initially learning DJing with (mostly) very linear house and techno tracks, learning to DJ earlier genres like italo were songs are valued as much as danceability, it definitely upped my DJ game. As a DJ who does not enjoy pre-preparing my set, my ability to think on my feet in the mix improved a lot.

groovypanda, Friday, 7 May 2021 07:32 (two years ago) link

I was bummed he only hit me up for the top tracks at the end and I wasn’t interviewed for the article! Same thing happened a few years later when FIAT sponsored a boiler room Italo night. I was added at the end to a panel that included Josh from Dark Entries, Justin Strauss and Charlie Grappone from Vinylmania records. They had already booked the DJ lineup, I had to “offer” my services and Boiler room said “well we could put you on in the hour after the doors open but before the broadcast starts, from 9 to 10 and we can only pay you $300 but I assume you wouldn’t want that”. I was like uh, that sounds ok.

I started DJing to a huge empty room as people started filing in and by 9:45 had a full room of people dancing. At 10 I handed it over to Cheon and his Honey Soundsystem pals and the broadcast started. The other DJ’s that night were Jacques Renault, Juan Maclean and Nancy Whang and Disclosure. While talking to Josh and Jacques they both said something like “we’re gonna play Italo mixed with other stuff, who wants to hear just Italo?” And I was like if there’s ever a night to just play Italo this is it!

dan selzer, Friday, 7 May 2021 10:24 (two years ago) link

Sorry Classixx, not Disclosure. The panel is online if you want to watch it. Jacques also made an Italo mix for it that was great.

dan selzer, Friday, 7 May 2021 10:26 (two years ago) link

Oh dear! I dearly love mixing italo with all sorts of stuff and love the change of energy you can get juxtaposing with other stuff, but you are right there is a time and a place and there’s real pleasure in hearing a 100% set. The cynic in me might see it as an easy cop-out, because purely playing a set of pure italo with the sometimes difficult non-standard intros and infinite possibilities of clashing notes can take a lot of knowledge or planning.

It's 3 AM on a Saturday night, and I have stumbled upon this sleek Greek Italo-ish track, which begins with the lines "I feel a burger inside me me me me / I feel a jazzburger in my brain brain brain " and it's earnest, beautiful, even sexy, and the LP cover is ridiculous and hints it's a soundtrack to something called Jazzburger so what am I going to do? I had to tell someone about it.

It sounds timeless, because Jazzburgers are evergreen. Can’t imagine what it was supposed to soundtrack. There are a number of italo style records, that, perhaps because of the English translation, have strange sexual imagery, and this may be one of them.

Vocal

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 10 October 2021 02:24 (two years ago) link

Definitely the instrumental. The vocals on the chorus aren’t nearly as good as on the verses, it’s crying out for a dub mix. (But then I almost always prefer instrumental italo unless it’s something like Righeira.)

Thanks for the thread bump tho, I was recently searching for the most active italo threads but missed this one. Seems like it’s basically the default rolling italo thread. And now I have an excuse to devote my day to italo.

I’m currently smitten with the Donato Dozzy edit of Space Operator that I linked in the italo POX thread but maybe it’s too cosmic for some dance floors.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Sunday, 10 October 2021 17:10 (two years ago) link

The deeper I go into Italo, the more I appreciate the vocals and the questionable/ridiculous lyrics. Sometimes I listen to to the instrumental side of a record first and try to guess what will be sung over the backing track, and when the vocals end up being super weird or high-pitched it’s very satisfying. Take “Hold Me” by Squires or “Golden Queen” by A.Avenue, for instance. The vocals totally disrupt any of the hipster cool of the backing track, like an obnoxious party crasher.

I would totally do an italo listening thread if we had enough people and interest in it. Could also include ‘80s eurodisco (from Spain, Sweden, French, Belgium, and Germany etc) as there is a lot of overlap in sound and style there.

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 10 October 2021 20:17 (two years ago) link

Personally I’d rapidly lose interest if the subject was broadened to all eurodisco. It seems like from other recent activity around here, there might be more interest in the overlap between italo, US boogie disco and possibly some post-disco (although that could be more my own pet subgenre).

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Sunday, 10 October 2021 21:02 (two years ago) link

I actually like those vocals on Hold Me. I see what you mean tho, they are a bit ridiculously kitschy.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Sunday, 10 October 2021 21:03 (two years ago) link

I mean, one could just open things up to all ‘80s dance music then.

Hi-NRG and eurodisco aren’t too far from italo (See “Love Spy” or “Right by the moon”) yet seem to have always been less in vogue. Kind of feel they are both still ripe for some rediscovery beyond Patrick Cowley and Bobby Orlando. Whereas Boogie is usually more classy so it brings in plenty of people who like R&B, funk, soul, and disco, as well your regular record nerds/cratediggers. It’s almost too well-done most of the time to sit alongside Italo’s cheese, but they are definitely some records that blur the line. A lot of Full Time records stuff comes to mind.

Beautiful track!

I’ve long ago went passed the wormhole of preferring instrumental, tracky, italo into almost always preferring vocal versions, and exapanding out into hi-nrg, eurodisco and almost anything else not considered “tasteful” among 80s dance music.

Not in the same league perhaps, but the Nathalie Letertre track reminded me of this tucked away French synth-pop track I dig.

Man, Ashaye really covered some ground in his not especially extensive discography. 'Fantasy' on Strictly Rythym is a pretty good house tune but 'Dreaming (Jungle Mix)' is like one of the holy grails of UK streetsoul, amazing song. And his first release was the closest he ever got to a hit and that was a medley of Michael Jackson songs - mercurial guy.

Interesting that he'd dabble in hi-nrg. The big UK figure I think of in hi-nrg is Ian Levine, who came out of the Northern Soul scene. He's behind the Ramming Speed on my mix, which is the instrumental of a cover version of the Searchers classic.

Got 7.5, but was hoping for a 9 at least. It’s back to Italo school for me. Number 9 was new to me too.

In other news, I’ve been a bit obsessed with this one the last couple of weeks:

love how there’s two italo tracks named “take me to the top” that are totally different but both excellent
